The filter paper (FP) method, a cost-effective, versatile, and convenient approach, has found extensive application in analyzing fine-grained soils, enabling the successful measurement of a broad spectrum of total and matric suctions. However, using the FP method in sand with a limited range of suction profiles has been notably underrepresented in the existing literature. Therefore, this study investigated the applicability of the contact FP method in establishing soil water retention curves (SWRCs) using five distinct FP calibration curves for 10 poorly graded sands. Among these calibration curves, the one presented by Chandler yielded the highest suction values, which were followed by those of ASTM. Furthermore, the FP results were subjected to fitting with a mathmatical model, which led to the observation that the overall trends in the obtained SWRCs displayed smooth sigmoidal shapes, resulting in a complete and coherent SWRCs. The SWRC results of five sand samples were assessed through validation against the hanging column technique (HCT) results, indicating a high degree of concordance and affirming the suitability of the FP method for sands characterized by a limited suction profile. Notably, the entire range of suction values fell within the 0.01–20 kPa range based on the calibration curves presented by Chandler and ASTM for all the examined sand samples, except sands 9 and 10. Furthermore, the suction values were unobtainable using the two aforementioned calibration curves within the ranges of 0.01–1.47 kPa and 0.01–0.172 kPa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cement stabilization is a widely applied technique in improving the workability and geotechnical properties of soft clay. This paper investigated the influence of cement stabilization on the soil–water characteristic curve (SWCC) and the deformation behavior of unsaturated cement–stabilized soft clay. The combined effect of cementation and partial saturation on the hydromechanical behavior of cement-stabilized soils was discussed. The SWCC of stabilized soil was measured in the full suction range under drying and wetting paths using the pressure plate method, the filter paper method, and the vapor equilibrium technique. The deformation behaviors of cement-stabilized soft soil were investigated by conducting suction-controlled oedometer tests. Furthermore, scanning electron microscope micrographs and mercury intrusion porosimetry tests were performed to investigate the effects of cement content on the evolution of soil pore structures. The test results showed that the water retention capacity of the stabilized soft clay increased with increasing cement content. The SWCC showed a significant hysteretic behavior in the boundary effect zone and transition zone, whereas the hysteretic effect was unapparent in the residual zone. The increased cement content had a more significant hysteretic effect on the SWCC. The deformation resistance capacity increased as the cement content and matric suction increased. However, the effect of matric suction on deformation resistance capacity decreased as the cement content increased. With the increase in cement content, the macropores were converted to small interaggregate pores, the pore spaces were distributed more uniformly, and the particle surface became rougher, resulting in higher water retention capacity and significant hysteresis of the SWCC. Distributed solar generation (DSG) has been growing over the previous years because of its numerous advantages of being sustainable, flexible, reliable, and increasingly affordable. DSG is a broad and multidisciplinary research field because it relates to various fields in engineering, social sciences, economics, public policy, and others. Developing a holistic understanding of the state of research related to DSG can be difficult. Motivated to provide that understanding, the goal of this paper is to explore current and emerging multidisciplinary research trends associated with DSG. To achieve that, (1) a large data set of approximately 66,000 publications was collected; (2) the papers were labeled using keywords for topics including "Batteries and Storage," "Solar," "Complex Modeling," "Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI)," "Resilience, Vulnerability, and Disasters," "Policies and Incentives," "Social Aspects," "Economics," "Smart Grid," "Finance," "Social Equity," "Microgrid," and "Virtual Power Plant"; and (3) the data set was analyzed using scientometric and social network analysis (SNA) in respect to publication counts, citation counts, and interconnectivity between the topics. Notable findings were analyzed to describe current and emerging trends. It was found that social equity has high citation counts contrasted by few publications, indicating a possible strong need for research. There is also rapidly growing research in ML and AI in the context of DSG during recent years. Other research topics, such as smart grids, have been attracting fewer publications. The results also highlight the need for multidisciplinary research connecting the topics. To conclude, future research is suggested to explore research needs in the areas of social aspects, social justice and equity, public policy and incentives, and ML/AI. The findings should benefit researchers and stakeholders with a holistic understanding of multidisciplinary DSG-related research and provide insight for planning new research and funding opportunities. The problem of corrosion in oil and gas pipelines is one of the major factors affecting the process safety and efficient sustainability development of the oil and gas industry. To gain a better understanding of global research trends and dynamics in the field of oil and gas pipeline corrosion and to advance the development of corrosion control technology, we conducted a literature review using a sample of 1,745 papers from the Web of Science (WOS) database published from 2002 to 2022. We employed a bibliometric analysis approach employed to investigate the distribution of publications over time, geographic regions, major organizations, major authors, journal cocitation, and literature cocitation, and to identify research hotspots and frontiers. The results revealed an exponential growth in the overall number of papers, with the most rapid increase occurring in the last 4 years. China, the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Brazil emerged as the most active countries in oil and natural gas pipeline corrosion research, and Mexico, Canada, and Australia also exhibited significant influence in the field. The journals Engineering Failure Analysis, Corrosion, and Corrosion Science had the highest number of publications and impact in this domain. Notably, Corrosion Science stood out as the most influential and highly regarded journal in the corrosion field. The fundamental theories and research framework in the realm of oil and natural gas pipeline corrosion have been primarily established, and a large number of research directions and frontier branches are emerging. The impact of flow parameters on corrosion, pipeline reliability assessment, and analysis of corrosion defects and failures are identified as the three main development paths in this field. In terms of research methodologies, machine learning techniques are becoming increasingly prevalent, with a growing number of studies adopting various machine learning methods. Sidewalks represent a fundamental part of the infrastructure in cities, allowing equal and barrier-free access for everyone. However, while pedestrian accessibility is a frequent concern in developed countries, it receives little attention in developing regions. Regarding studies on pedestrian infrastructure, the characteristics of the sidewalk that are considered are also varied, as well as the aspects mainly focused on by such research. Moreover, the perception of the target user group, especially of people with disabilities, can be an important topic in this area. In this context, this paper presents a systematic literature review of sidewalk assessments, focusing on accessibility, to answer the following research questions. In which contexts are sidewalk assessments carried out? Which aspects and elements are usually considered? Are people with disabilities included? We noticed that sidewalk assessments have been a recent study topic, but with less focus on the Global South. Besides accessibility, walkability stands out as a research focus, and the sidewalk elements most addressed are surface conditions and width. Finally, the perceptions of people, especially with disabilities, are scarcely considered, demonstrating an important research gap. The sidewalk is a very important element of the city. It should allow walking, with accessibility for everyone. However, there are three things to consider: (i) sometimes the importance of an accessible sidewalk is not recognized in developing countries; (ii) the different characteristics and aspects of the sidewalk are considered differently between different studies; and (iii) the opinions of pedestrians, especially of people with disabilities, are not always present in evaluations of sidewalks. Thus, the aim of this study is to develop a systematic literature review to better understand how the sidewalks are evaluated in different studies, especially considering accessibility. In the study, the previous three findings were confirmed, with the conclusion that (i) evaluation of sidewalks is a recent topic of study, but mostly in developed countries; (ii) accessibility, walkability, and safety are frequent topics in sidewalk assessments, with surface conditions and width being the most evaluated characteristics; and (iii) few studies consider the opinions of pedestrians with disabilities. This study deals with the recovery of deinking sludge (DS) generated during waste paper recycling. The aim is to integrate this sludge in the fired-bricks formulation with different percentages. These mixtures are fired, and the study of the general aspect, loss on fire, and water absorption enables characterization of this material. In this study, the energy, economic, and environmental (3E) analysis on two waste-to-energy (WtE) technologies, for example, anaerobic digestion (AD) and incineration, for the treatment of municipal solid waste in Surat (Gujarat, India) was conducted. For energy criteria, the potential for energy recovery from municipal solid wastes (MSW) through AD and incineration was considered. The economic analysis that was carried out considered preprocessing, transportation, land, capital investment, and operational and maintenance costs that were incurred. The revenue that was generated by selling the electricity and compost was considered along with the recycling value of the paper waste. For environmental analysis, the global warming and acidification potentials (APs) were considered from the emissions that were produced during the treatment, transport, and disposal along with the displaced emissions. The results indicated that the average daily solid waste generation from Surat was 0.33 kg/person and the average total solid waste generation was 2080 t/day. Organic waste was the largest fraction (35.6%) followed by inert waste (13.5%), construction and demolition waste (12.4%), and recyclable waste, such as glass, rubber, and metal (11.2%). AD had less energy generation potential (9.89 MW) compared with incineration (16.99 MW). From an economic perspective, incineration had a higher profit (INR 1.48 million/day) than AD (INR 1.38 million/day). The environmental analysis showed that incineration had greater potential to reduce global warming and acidification compared with AD. This paper aims at proposing a calculation model to deal with the face stability of shield tunnels in unsaturated soil. Based on the existing results of centrifugal test and numerical simulation, a new failure mechanism is proposed, which combines the logarithmic spiral with upper loosening arch mechanisms. The failure mechanism considers the influence of the soil arching effect and the logarithmic spiral height coefficient. Formulas for calculating the loosening earth pressure of unsaturated soil are deduced. Subsequently, this model of loosening earth pressure is introduced into an analytical model to compute the limit support pressure on the tunnel face. Compared with other height coefficients and the degree of soil arching effect, when the height coefficient is 0.95 and the degree of soil arching effect is 10%–30%, the limit support pressure proposed in this paper is in good agreement with the centrifugal test results. Finally, comparisons are performed with the proposed model and classical models as well as typical centrifuge model tests. The comparative analysis shows that the proposed theoretical model is in good agreement with the numerical simulation. Fine grid management is one of the important development directions of transportation planning that has not been fully considered in previous literature. This paper explores the application of the fine grid management method in transportation planning. Based on a case study of Chuanhui, China, this paper proposes a data-driven fine grid partitioning method for determining traffic analysis zones (TAZs). The TAZs are partitioned based on quadrilateral and hexagonal grids. This paper also summarizes a set of criteria for evaluating the impact of different fine grid partitioning methods based on the geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) model. The results show that our fine grid partitioning method for determining TAZs based on quadrilateral grids can achieve a relatively low level of predicted value bias and variable correlation degree bias when the number of TAZs is larger, and it has obvious advantages. Energy saving has become a key concern of metro systems to reduce operating costs and meet the requirements of sustainable development. Energy-efficient timetabling, an effective way to reduce traction energy consumption, has gotten much attention in recent decades. However, limited research about energy-efficient timetabling simultaneously considered realistic speed profiles and the influence of train loads, which change greatly in different sections and significantly affect energy consumption. Therefore, this paper proposes an energy-efficient timetabling approach to improve regenerative energy utilization based on varying train loads and realistic speed profiles for bidirectional metro lines. First, based on the operational and safety constraints, this paper constructs an integer energy-efficient timetabling model where dwell times and nonuniform headways are taken as decision variables. Besides, the turnaround process is also considered to ensure rolling stock circulation efficiency. Sectional passenger volumes are employed to determine the varying train loads. Energy consumption is calculated based on realistic speed profiles. Owing to the complexity of the model, an improved adaptive large neighborhood search (ALNS) algorithm is designed to solve this model according to its characteristics. Finally, numerical examples are conducted based on the practical data from Shanghai Metro Line 17. The results indicate that the proposed approach effectively solves the energy-efficient timetabling problem with varying train loads and realistic speed profiles for bi-directional metro lines. The approach is suitable for off peak hours and can reduce energy consumption effectively, and the reduction is up to 11.9% for the presented cases. The improved ALNS algorithm can find good solutions within reasonable times in different cases. Moreover, compared with the widely used genetic algorithm in the literature, the improved ALNS algorithm is more efficient in solving the proposed energy-efficient timetabling problem in different cases. With the changing paradigm of the State's functions and the increasing private sector participation in urban planning, public–private partnership (PPP) arrangements gain prominence in the development of cities, whether in the construction and operation of new infrastructures or in interventions in urbanized areas. Regarding urbanized areas, urban regeneration practices constitute an important response in the face of urban degradation observed in different cities, as well as an alternative to the consumption of new land. Despite their use in different contexts, the PPP option in urban regeneration projects encounters many obstacles related to high investment risk, low financial and social return, and the numerous sources of uncertainty generated by these projects. The present work consists of a systematic literature review of papers on PPP in urban regeneration projects, seeking to identify the main research topics addressed so far and what gaps can be identified. It uses a hybrid methodology considering a systematic quantitative review, a semantic analysis, and a narrative analysis. The findings show that the literature on the topic is recent and has been increasing in recent years, with emphasis on Europe, followed by North America and Asia. The literature presents a high variety in terms of journals, authors, and institutions. As for the methodology adopted in the articles, it highlights the use of quantitative methodologies. Five main topics were found: policy, projects, governance, financial and economic issues, and management and contract issues. The topics found show the complexity of PPPs in urban regeneration projects. The gaps observed refer mainly to financial and economic issues, as well as management and contract issues. This paper presents an assessment of recycling of thermally treated fluvial sediments as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). Different calcination treatments were conducted with temperatures ranging between 450°C and 950°C. For each calcined sediment, a detailed characterization was carried out. Subsequently, blended cements containing 25% calcined sediments (CS) were prepared and tested, including portlandite consumption, hydration kinetics, and compressive strength development (41 and 52 MPa at 7 and 90 days, respectively). The results showed that blended cement based on CS at 750°C provided the most favorable hydration kinetics and the highest compressive strength. An optimization design of experiment was followed to maximize the substitution rate of CS. The resulting multivariable function suggests a replacement rate up to 20% to produce a blended cement equivalent to CEM II 52.5 N, and up to 30% to produce a cement equivalent to CEM II 42.5 N. Labor shortage and low labor productivity are critical issues in the construction industry. Robotics, as a powerful technology to improve productivity in the digitization era, is being used to assist in addressing these problems. Particularly in recent years, interest in construction robotics research has risen remarkably. To gain a deeper understanding of this burgeoning research field, this study provides a bibliometric analysis of 498 related papers retrieved from WoS (Web of Science). Performance analysis and science mapping were used in the paper to identify the research trends, relationship among authors, top publication sources, regional activities, as well as knowledge base and dominant research sub-fields. The results indicated that the number of papers focusing on construction robotics has been continuously growing since 2013. "Automation," "system," and "design" have been the most addressed topics in construction robotics. The findings are indicative of identifying the deficiencies in existing research and provide directions for future research. Those include greater attention paid to the experimental results of on-site construction robots, while ignoring the impacts of practical construction situations, and the development of off-site construction robots needs more support. For theoretical research, there is a lack of studies on human–robot collaboration workflow and management models. Therefore, the study would be valuable in providing practitioners and researchers with a better perspective on the development of construction robotics and facilitating the building of the intellectual wealth of robotics in the construction industry. Our study analyzed 498 papers related to construction robotics from 1974 to 2022 through bibliometric approaches (mathematical and statistical methods). The study counted the numbers of construction robotics papers by year, identified most active scholars and top publication sources, and analyzed the relationship among regions. Most importantly, the paper identified the knowledge base of the research field of construction robotics and reviewed various relevant studies from theoretical and practical application perspectives. Cost estimating in the construction industry is challenging due to the high uncertainty associated with the supply chain, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Some research studies have addressed such problems by developing models that predict material cost. In fact, all material can be interconnected and interrelated with lead-lag relationships such that any inflation in one material's price can be associated with inflation in other materials' prices, referred to as transmission of inflation. Despite the latter, none of the existing studies have investigated inflation transmission among all construction materials. This paper fills this knowledge gap. The authors used a multistep research methodology. First, Producer Price Index (PPI) data for 16 construction materials were collected and sorted. Second, the vector autoregression technique was used to model the relationships between each pair of material and subsequently validate the associations using the Granger causality test. Third, network analysis was performed to identify the inflation transmission capacity (out-degree centrality), inflation susceptibility (in-degree centrality), and inflation intermediatory capacity (betweenness centrality) for each material. Finally, modularity-based clustering was conducted to categorize the materials based on their price indices' interconnections and examine inflation transmission path among different sectors of construction-related material. The results show that metals and plastic products are generally the highest transmitters of inflation to other construction material including "Fabricated structural metal products" and "Plastic construction products." Furthermore, the results show that "Concrete products," "Flat glass," "Brick and structural clay tile," and "Architectural coatings" are also high transmitters of inflation and thus can be key indicators of increase in the overall construction cost. This paper provides the industry stakeholders with leading indicators and early warning signs for the inflated material prices. In view of the low identification accuracy of the crack-detection technology of asphalt pavement under the current conditions of complex pavement (subject to strong light, water on the road, debris, and so on), an asphalt pavement crack-detection algorithm based on improved YOLOv5s was proposed by building the data set for asphalt pavement cracks. The first step was to make the following improvements to the original YOLOv5s model according to the characteristics of the asphalt pavement crack data set: The k -means++ algorithm was used to recluster the anchor points of the crack data set, and the initial anchor frame matching the crack characteristics of the asphalt pavement was obtained to replace the default initial anchor frame in the YOLOv5 original model. In the prediction part of the original model, the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) was added in the order of first channel and then space to improve the detection ability of the model to small cracks. The CIoU_Loss function was used as the regression loss function of the model to replace the GIoU_Loss function in the original model to improve the positioning accuracy of the anchor frame. The second step was to perform an ablation experiment on the improved YOLOv5s model. This would prove that each improvement scheme could increase detection ability without conflict. The final step was to compare the improved YOLOv5s model with various classic target detection models in the data set of this paper: the Crack Forest Data set (CFD), the Crack500 data set, and the Crack200 data set. The results showed that the detection of the improved YOLOv5s model on each data set was better than other target detection models. The mAP@0.5 and mAP@[0.5:0.95] of this model on the data set of this paper were 90.58% and 56.08%, respectively, which were much higher than other target detection models. These findings indicate that the improved YOLOv5s model had better detection under complex pavement conditions and could provide a theoretical basis for the automatic detection of asphalt pavement cracks. One of the key tasks to ensure infrastructure safety is the periodic detection of bridge cracks. Since manual crack detection is subjective and inefficient, it is very important to develop an automatic crack recognition system by using machine vision. Inspired by the pyramid vision transformer (PVT) and the feature pyramid network (FPN) variants, a method combining PVT, residual transformer (REST), holistically nested edge detection (HED), and downstream detection tasks is proposed in this paper, which is named EVPTMFF (efficient visual pyramid transformer and multiple-feature fusion). Based on the PVT, the multiheaded attention module was replaced and the efficient attention module was adopted, which could process the data efficiently and flexibly. To improve the performance of EVPTMFF, the original perceptual field windows were changed. The adjacent windows were partially overlapped, which was more conducive to feature interaction and improves detection performance. To prove the generalization ability of the model, three different data sets related to bridges were collected and formed. We carried out experiments on these three data sets, and EVPTMFF showed good results. Especially for larger data sets, the performance advantage was more significant. Practical Applications: The crack detection model proposed in this paper presents a good detection effect under different illumination and interference. And the detection results, collected data, time, and other information are saved to the bridge crack detection software. This can help engineers quickly and accurately detect cracks on the bridge surface, as well as predict the development trend of cracks and possible safety issues. In practical application, the bridge crack detection system can help engineers find and solve the bridge crack problem in time and avoid the security risks and economic losses caused by cracks. At the same time, the efficiency and accuracy of bridge maintenance can be improved, and the maintenance cost and time can be reduced. Density is an important indicator for evaluating diesel fuel quality that directly affects the injection timing and injection rule of the engine, and also has a significant impact on the spray broken particle size, the spray penetration distance, the spray cone angle, and so forth, which in turn affects the combustion process and pollutant emission of the compression-ignition engine. Therefore, it is important to accurately predict the diesel fuel mixture density in industrial and compression-ignition engines. However, the mathematical models for predicting the density of diesel fuel mixture with changed temperature are relatively lacking and less accurate, especially for ternary diesel fuel mixtures with different physicochemical properties. This paper proposes a mathematical model including binary and ternary diesel mixtures under changed fuel volume fraction and temperature, and published data were used for verification. The data verification results show that: for the density prediction of binary diesel fuel mixtures at constant temperature, the average relative deviation (ARD) is 0.0245%, the RMS error (RMSE) is 0.000344, and the correlation coefficient (R) is 0.9993. For the density prediction of binary diesel fuel mixtures at changed temperature, the ARD is 0.0609%, the RMSE is 0.000695, and R is 0.9980. For the density prediction of ternary diesel fuel mixtures at constant temperature, the ARD is lower than 0.0571%, the RMSE is lower than 0.000610, and R is higher than 0.9861. For the density prediction of ternary diesel fuel mixtures at changed temperature, the ARD is 0.0484%, the RMSE is 0.000513, and R is 0.9996. The diesel mixed fuel density prediction model proposed in this paper has good accuracy and calculation convenience, and provides important reference value for measuring or designing the density of diesel mixed fuel in the field of compression-ignition engines. Pressurized irrigation network systems constitute an important water-saving approach, but their relatively high costs limit their promotion. Pipe diameter optimization is the most direct way to reduce irrigation costs and can bring significant economic benefits. In recent years, material technology developments have improved networks' impact resistance, resulting in traditional flow velocity constraints no longer applying to current network designs, and appropriately increasing the velocity has become an engineering requirement. In addition, with the update of engineering construction standards, the location of pipe diameter changes is no longer limited to pipe section connections and is allowed to change between standard pipes. Therefore, this paper removes the constraint of the upper limit of flow velocity, defines it as a factor related to the maintenance cost of the network, and establishes a pipe section optimization model. Further, this paper changes the minimum optimization unit from pipe sections to standard pipes and establishes a standard pipe optimization model. The results show that compared with traditional optimization methods, the pipe section optimization model that deletes the upper velocity limit can reduce costs by 5.1%, in which the velocity will not increase infinitely but will be stable within a reasonable range. The standard pipe optimization model can reduce irrigation costs by 12.1%. It is worth noting that the two models were optimized to balance the head loss; their energy costs did not change significantly with the reduction in pipe diameter. In addition, this paper changes the structure of the traditional algorithm and designs a structure of double selection and parallel variation, achieving a faster and more accurate solution than the classic genetic algorithm. The Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management (JWRPM) launched a Reproducibility Review Program in 2020 to address the lack of reproducibility in water-related journals. The program encourages authors to publish data, models, code, and directions with their articles so that independent reviewers can replicate their work. The program has five objectives, including promoting reproducibility, facilitating the use of reproducible work, and recognizing authors who make their work more reproducible. The program has already awarded Silver and Bronze badges to several manuscripts and plans to expand to other journals. Challenges include incorporating reproducibility reviews into the submission process and educating authors about the program. The current active earth pressure calculation theory cannot take into account the influence of the foundation inverse slope. For the translational mode retaining wall in this paper, taking cohesive backfill as the research object, the clay within the crack depth range is equivalent to uniform overload, using the upper limit theory, establishing the energy conservation equation of the velocity field and force, and the analytical formula of the tensile crack depth and the slip surface of the cohesive backfill being obtained. By taking into account the soil arching effect, setting up the static equilibrium equation by horizontal layer analysis, deriving the active earth pressure calculation expression of cohesive backfill, it is possible to consider the influence of the basement inverse slope. In the case of cohesionless backfill, the formula can be reduced to the theoretical solution. By comparing the calculated results with the experimental values and relevant theories, this can verify the applicability of the formula. The result of research shows that, with the increase of the basement inverse slope angle, the development of the tensile crack will be promoted, the dip angle of the slip surface changes little, and the resultant force and overturning moment will decrease, which is conducive to the antisliding stability and antioverturning stability of the wall, reducing the project cost. The active earth pressure distribution of cohesionless backfill is independent of whether there is an inverse slope in the basement. This paper presents the first seismic tests on a full-scale all-composite frame structure, constituted by pultruded glass fiber–reinforced polymer (GFRP) profiles, to the best of the authors' knowledge. These tests were performed in the scope of the FRP-Quake project, which aimed to provide an in-depth understanding of the dynamic and seismic behavior of all-GFRP structures, and to develop structural systems with adequate seismic resistance. Therefore, an extensive research program was conducted, from the material and component scales to the structural full-scale, which encompassed the development of appropriate beam-to-column bolted connection systems. The experimental campaign presented in this paper was composed of shaking table tests on a full-scale, two-story, three-dimensional (3D) frame of I section pultruded GFRP profiles connected with bolted stainless steel parts. First, modal identification tests were performed, which show the influence of adding floor masses, bracings, or both on the dynamic characteristics of the structure, which were accurately predicted with relatively simple linear finite-element (FE) models. Then, the frame structure was subjected to 18 base displacement histories with increasing intensity, which was based on the design earthquake for mainland Portugal. The results showed that the structure maintained its integrity for intensities up to 37% higher than the normative requirements. The use of externally bonded (EB) fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) systems for the strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures is a widely accepted technique. In these strengthened systems, debonding of the FRP laminate from the concrete substrate is a commonly observed failure mode, which controls the strength of the bonded joint. Debonding failure often limits the utilization of the strength of carbon fiber–reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates, which reduces the efficiency of the strengthening system. This paper presents a novel methodology to improve the load-carrying capacity (i.e., ultimate load) of CFRP-to-concrete bonded joints, therefore improving the utilization of the CFRP material strength. A bidirectional glass fiber–reinforced polymer (GFRP) interlayer is introduced between the CFRP laminate and the concrete substrate, therefore, distributing the load that is applied to the CFRP laminate over a larger bond area than that of typical CFRP-to-concrete bonded joints. A series of single-shear pull test specimens were fabricated and tested to investigate the behavior of the newly proposed bonded joints. A vacuum curing technique was employed to achieve a good quality bonded interface. The test results showed a significant increase in the ultimate load. In addition, the test results showed that the GFRP laminate width and stiffness significantly affect ultimate load (up to 156% increase). Considering the significantly lower cost of GFRP compared with CFRP laminates, the proposed method could provide an economical solution to improve the efficiency of EB CFRP strengthening systems. When deciding which project to fund, the comparison of project-required resources and monetary or financial benefits is relatively straightforward (as these can be presented in dollar values). In contrast, comparing the nonmonetary benefits of projects can be challenging. The literature often overlooks this problem and only provides high-level approaches (e.g., comparing a project's contributions to the organization's strategic goals). Such approaches are inefficient as they are highly subjective and may be impacted by decision-makers' bias. To this point in time, the literature has not effectively addressed this problem. This literature gap and the practical importance of the problem motivate the development of detailed step-by-step methodological processes to reduce subjectivity and enable a quantitative comparison of the nonmonetary benefits of projects. This paper develops such a novel straightforward methodology and illustrates its application through a case study where nonmonetary benefits of a railway construction project are compared against a hospital expansion project. In addition to this methodological contribution, this paper also contributes to the current literature on construction engineering and management by showing how to perform an effective comparison of the nonmonetary benefits in the project investment decision. The paper also sheds light on how the reasoning structures of different project decision makers may be impacted by their degree of optimism. Practical Applications: Construction projects may deliver a range of dissimilar benefits. Unlike monetary values (such as required resources and financial or monetary benefits), the comparison of nonmonetary benefits (e.g., social values) of different proposals can be challenging. This paper provides a two-phased methodology to facilitate this comparison. In the first phase, two straightforward questions are asked to draw benefit satisfaction graphs, and in the second phase, different future scenarios are integrated to make the comparison process more reliable. Ultimately, a methodology is developed to show how the nonmonetary benefits of different projects can be compared. It is then illustrated on a case from the Australian government where the nonmonetary benefits of a railway construction project are compared against those of a hospital expansion project to assist with the decision as to which project should be given a higher priority to be funded. In the twenty-first century, with the development of urbanization, large-scale mine wastelands in peri-urban areas have become increasingly closely related to the daily lives of urban and rural residents. Adopting a reuse method that meets the health needs of these residents, restoration, construction of mine wastelands in the suburbs of cities, and the formation of high-quality healthy environments and service supply are in line with the demands of healthy city construction and sustainable development. In addition, they have received increasing attention from all sectors of society. Based on the main criteria for constructing a healthy urban environment, this paper takes the comprehensive remediation and construction project of mine wastelands in the Taiyuan Xishan Ecological and Cultural Tourism Demonstration Area as a case study. It uses on-site surveys and an open-ended web-based questionnaire. It focuses on researching the perceived health needs of urban and rural residents in Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, China concerning the main elements that determine health, such as the natural ecological environment, the construction of facilities and activities, and the local economic and industrial development. The results of 748 questionnaires that were completed by participants who effectively participated in the survey show that most participants preferred a comprehensive development model (86.6%) to reuse these areas. In addition, the specific needs of urban and rural residents for health safety, equity and quality, and healthy low-carbon industries should be considered. The differences in demand among groups of citizens due to different ages, living distances, levels of education, and occupations should be comprehensively considered. This paper demonstrates that a full understanding of the health needs of residents has great practical significance when improving the healthy environment and service supply level in mine wasteland restoration and construction and promoting the development of regional healthy city construction. Recently, the healthy environment and sustainable development of areas that host large-scale mine wastelands on the outskirts of cities have received increasing attention from all sectors of society. This paper suggests that during the reuse and construction of these areas, government management, development, and construction companies, planning and design organizations, and other departments that are involved in policy formulation and construction implementation should give full consideration to the perceived health needs of urban and rural residents in the host city, and to groups of residents of different ages, living distances, occupations, and educational levels, to form a high-quality and equitable health environment and services in the area. Industrialization and urbanization are significant facets of modernization. The asynchronous development of the two is closely related to the agglomeration of producer services. This paper constructed an asynchrony index to describe the development gap between industrialization and urbanization. Various spatial weight matrices were introduced to test the spatial autocorrelation of the asynchrony index. Applying spatial econometric models, we explored the impact of agglomeration of producer services on the asynchrony index from two aspects: diversified agglomeration (DA) and specialized agglomeration (SA). The following conclusions are drawn from the empirical findings, which are based on data from 31 Chinese provinces between 2008 and 2019: (1) the asynchrony of industrialization and urbanization exhibits the spatial autocorrelation increasing over time; (2) SA exacerbates the asynchrony, while DA alleviates the asynchrony; (3) SA exerts greater impacts in highly industrialized and urbanized regions, while DA exerts greater effects in lowly industrialized and urbanized regions; and (4) agricultural dependence and infrastructure level weaken the impacts of SA and strengthen the impacts of DA. Income level weakens the impacts of both SA and DA. The results of this study provide a reference for policymakers to adjust the industrial layout in a targeted manner to regulate the asynchronous nature of modernization development. The world reality indicates that the two are not always synchronized in countries due to resource and cultural differences. This technical paper quantifies the asynchrony between industrialization and urbanization using data from 31 provinces in China and verifies the opposite effects of two agglomeration modes on asynchrony. In cities with different levels of industrialization and urbanization, cities with higher or lower agricultural dependence, and cities with higher or lower infrastructure levels, the impact direction of the two agglomeration modes shows stability, while the magnitude varies. With the rapid development of high-speed railways (HSR) in China, the level of travel accessibility for residents has improved. While previous research has predominantly concentrated on the accessibility of HSR networks, it is imperative to recognize that the accessibility of HSR services is intrinsically intertwined with the spatial arrangement of HSR stations. The unreasonable location of HSR stations can lead to inequitable problems in service facilities within metropolitan areas. When investigating the accessibility of HSR stations, the road network emerges as the primary conduit for residents' mobility. The spatial variance of the road network manifests not only in divergent spatial densities but also in the traffic conditions across distinct temporal and spatial intervals. Based on the road network and dynamic road conditions, this study proposed a modified two-step floating catchment area method (M2SFCA) by using high-speed railway station location data, the subdistrict office (village and town) data, road network data, and floating car data (FCD). Taking the XZQ Metropolitan Core Area (the metropolitan core area of Xiamen, Zhangzhou, and Quanzhou, China) as an example, this paper analyzed the impact of a newly planned HSR station on the spatial distribution of accessibility in the metropolitan core area. The findings revealed that the newly planned HSR station has led to a substantial 68.18% elevation in overall regional accessibility. Notably, approximately 35% of the population has transitioned from locales with diminished accessibility to regions with heightened accessibility. Furthermore, the HSR station has ameliorated the hitherto uneven spatial distribution of accessibility advantages across the region. Under the limitation of travel time in metropolitan areas, this study explored an accessibility evaluation model based on dynamic traffic data, providing a method for an impartial and equitable evaluation of transportation infrastructure placement within the metropolitan core area. This study shows that the new high-speed railway station will not only improve regional accessibility but also affect the equilibrium degree of the spatial distribution of regional accessibility benefits. It is suggested that the metropolitan area should further build high-grade roads, strengthen transportation network links between urban areas, and improve regional accessibility. At the same time, for areas where the degree of accessibility fairness has declined, it is suggested to increase the energy level and scale of their high-speed railway stations to reduce the dependence of local residents on external high-speed railway stations and improve the convenience of local residents' travel. In addition, this paper improves the accessibility measurement method—2SFCA method. By improving the search carrier of the spatial action domain, the calculation method of road traffic state, and the selection of time threshold, the improved 2SFCA method is more in line with the actual situation, which expands the dynamic space–time analysis ability, improves the accuracy of accessibility calculation, and can more accurately judge the fairness of high-speed railway station construction. Augmented reality (AR) has become one of the most pervasive technologies for immersive applications with potential to improve worker performance in construction. However, the cognitive impact of using AR is still being studied and a comprehensive assessment of changes on user's cognitive status is needed. This study proposed an electroencephalogram (EEG)-based mental workload evaluation method for a wood frame assembly, comparing the differences between two information display types (conformal model and paper layout). Additionally, a task performance analysis was conducted for completion rate and accuracy. The experiment recruited thirty construction students with similar backgrounds who were novice AR users. The findings indicated that AR improved the assembling efficiency with significantly higher completion (p<0.001) in comparison to the paper display. Furthermore, both mean and maximum values during the task process were analyzed to compare the difference between the displays, where AR display generated significantly less mental work in mean (p=0.007) and maximal (p=0.030) values. The comparison of the changing trends of mental workload increment in assembly revealed that AR display maintained lower mental workload and smaller fluctuation (standard deviation) during the entire assembly. The outcomes examined the usability of AR head-mounted display (HMD) in the construction assembly task with a moment-to-moment physiological evaluation of user's mental workload. This work shows that EEG-based mental workload evaluation can be used as an effective method for revealing changes in workers' mental status in real time during assembly, which has implications for future research in areas such as hazard recognition and situational awareness evaluation.
