The nine-member High-Resolution Rapid Refresh Ensemble (HRRRE) is evaluated for its ability to forecast five Atmospheric River (AR) events that impacted California in February-March 2019. Two sets of retrospective HRRRE simulations are conducted, a control with the standard set of perturbations (initial and boundary conditions, stochastic parameters, and physics tendency), and an experiment with initial and boundary perturbations only. Reliability plots suggest the HRRRE control represents the observed Stage IV precipitation frequency well at 6-h to 24-h lead times, and rank histograms suggest the ensemble is slightly underdispersive. The HRRRE overpredicts precipitation frequency at the higher (25 mm) threshold. These results suggest the HRRRE is a useful tool to quantify probabilistic forecasts of AR events in this region. Removing stochastic physics perturbations did not substantially impact probabilistic forecasts, suggesting most of the ensemble spread is from initial and boundary condition perturbations. Spatially, ensemble precipitation coefficient of variance is lower (less forecast uncertainty) over the Sierra Nevada range than other regions, suggesting that these ensemble perturbations have a smaller impact on precipitation processes occurring over the Sierra Nevada range. More work should be conducted to understand the impacts of other model perturbations, such as microphysics, on ensemble performance, and to improve Stage IV accuracy with frozen precipitation in mountainous regions. The spatial heterogeneity related to complex topography in California demands high-resolution (< 5 km) modeling, but global convection-permitting climate models are computationally too expensive to run multi-decadal simulations. We developed a 3.25 km California climate modeling framework by leveraging regional mesh refinement (CARRM) using the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s global Simple Cloud-Resolving E3SM Atmosphere Model (SCREAM) version 0. Four 5-year time periods (2015–2020, 2029–2034, 2044–2049, and 2094–2099) were simulated by nudging CARRM outside California to 1° coupled simulation of E3SMv1 under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP)5-8.5 future scenario. The 3.25 km grid spacing adds considerable value to the prediction of the California climate changes, including more realistic high temperatures in the Central Valley and much improved spatial distributions of precipitation and snowpack in the Sierra Nevada and coastal stratocumulus. Under the SSP5-8.5 scenario, CARRM simulation predicts widespread warming of 6–10 °C over most of California, a 38 % increase in statewide average 30 d winter–spring precipitation, a near-complete loss of the alpine snowpack, and a sharp reduction in shortwave cloud radiative forcing associated with marine stratocumulus by the end of the 21st century. We note a climatological wet precipitation bias for the CARRM and discuss possible reasons. We conclude that SCREAM RRM is a technically feasible and scientifically valid tool for climate simulations in regions of interest, providing an excellent bridge to global convection-permitting simulations. Climate change is affecting the phenology of organisms and ecosystem processes across a wide range of environments. However, the links between organismal and ecosystem process change in complex communities remain uncertain. In snow-dominated watersheds, snowmelt in the spring and early summer, followed by a long low-flow period, characterizes the natural flow regime of streams and rivers. Here, we examined how earlier snowmelt will alter the phenology of mountain stream organisms and ecosystem processes via an outdoor mesocosm experiment in stream channels in the Eastern Sierra Nevada, California. The low-flow treatment, simulating a 3- to 6-wk earlier return to summer baseflow conditions projected under climate change scenarios in the region, increased water temperature and reduced biofilm production to respiration ratios by 32%. Additionally, most of the invertebrate species explaining community change (56% and 67% of the benthic and emergent taxa, respectively), changed in phenology as a consequence of the low-flow treatment. Further, emergent flux pulses of the dominant insect group (Chironomidae) almost doubled in magnitude, benefitting a generalist riparian predator. Changes in both invertebrate community structure (composition) and functioning (production) were mostly fine-scale, and response diversity at the community level stabilized seasonally aggregated responses. Our study illustrates how climate change in vulnerable mountain streams at the rain-to-snow transition is poised to alter the dynamics of stream food webs via fine-scale changes in phenology-leading to novel predator-prey "matches" or "mismatches" even when community structure and ecosystem processes appear stable at the annual scale. During a 6-day intensive observing period in January 2021, Atmospheric River Reconnaissance (AR Recon) aircraft sampled a series of atmospheric rivers (ARs) over the northeastern Pacific that caused heavy precipitation over coastal California and the Sierra Nevada. Using these observations, data denial experiments were conducted with a regional modeling and data assimilation system to explore the impacts of research flight frequency and spatial resolution of dropsondes on model analyses and forecasts. Results indicate that dropsondes significantly improve the representation of ARs in the model analyses and positively impact the forecast skill of ARs and quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPF), particularly for lead times > 1 day. Both reduced mission frequency and reduced dropsonde horizontal resolution degrade forecast skill. On the other hand, experiments that assimilated only G-IV data and experiments that assimilated both G-IV and C-130 data show better forecast skill than experiments that only assimilated C-130 data, suggesting that the additional information provided by G-IV data is necessary for improving forecast skill. Although this is a case study, the 6-day period studied encompassed multiple AR events that are representative of typical AR behavior. Therefore, the results indicate that future operational AR Recon missions incorporate daily mission or back-to-back flights, maintain current dropsonde spacing, support high-resolution data transfer capacity on the C-130s, and utilize G-IV aircraft in addition to C-130s.
