"The Journal of Investigative Dermatology" had another successful year in 1990, as exemplified by growing submission and publication of a large and varied journal of high-quality papers. A new category, the "High impact" paper, has been introduced in order to identify particular important papers early in the review process and hasten those papers to publication. the time for submission to decision on these papers is under one month, if authors complete revisions rapidly, these papers can be published in four months from submission.

The article presents the announcement of a joint meeting of the Society for Investigative Dermatology and the European Society for Dermatological Research from May 17 through May 19, 1972. The purpose of this meeting will be to serve as a forum for the presentation of original dermatological research papers. Twelve minutes will be allotted per paper. All presentations must be in English. Simultaneous translation will not be provided. The program will be selected by a joint program committee of the two sponsoring Societies. The article also announces that the Third World Congress of the International Society of Tropical Dermatology will be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on September 13-18, 1974.

This article provides a report about the achievements of the "journal of Investigative Dermatology," in 1989. Rapid communications continue to provide a means for facilitated publication of concise, definitive, and important new findings, but they still remain a minor component of the published manuscripts. The number of submitted papers over the past three years has stabilized at around 500, and the journal has published more editorial pages of original research papers in 1989 than ever before.

The Mohammed Amer Award Committee proudly announces that papers are now being considered for the Mohammed Amer Award. The winning paper will he presented at The 7th Biennial Zagazig Dermatology Meeting, Cairo, Egypt, February 6- 10, 1992. The papers will be accepted from residents in training, or those completing their training in July, 1991. It will include topics of clinical and basic research.

Background A voluntary surveillance scheme of occupational skin diseases (OSDs) in The Netherlands starting in 2001 aimed to improve insight in the incidence of OSD especially occupational contact dermatitis (OCD), risk professions and causal agents. This paper presents the results of this scheme during 2001–05. Methods Reports of new cases of OSD received from the participating dermatologists on a monthly basis were analysed. Data evaluated included information on diagnosis, sex, age, sickness, absenteeism, profession and causal agents. Relative differences in incidence rates between industries or branches were estimated by calculating incidence rate ratios. Results About 80% of the notifications concerned OCD. The highest number of notifications was recorded in the first year of the scheme. This was probably due to reporting of a mixture of incident and prevalent cases. During the following 5 years, the number of yearly notifications of OSD declined. Hairdressers, nurses, metalworkers, mechanics and cleaners were the most commonly affected professions. Wet work and irritating substances were the most frequently reported causal agents. Most patients with OCD were not absent from work. Conclusions A voluntary surveillance scheme with dermatologists provides valuable data about the distribution of OCD in risk professions and the causal agents. However, it has certain limitations in assessing trends in incidence. Active medical surveillance in populations at risk should be encouraged not only to improve secondary prevention but also to obtain more reliable information about the incidence of OCD.
