Following upon the spurs of Sara Humphreys's I Manifest Destiny 2.0 i (2021) and Christopher Conway and Antoinette Sol's I The Comic Book Western i (2022), both published in the University of Nebraska Press's "Postwestern Horizons" series and both examining global manifestations of the Western in a specific nonliterary medium (video games and comic books, respectively), Joel Deshaye's I The American Western in Canadian Literature i , the latest addition to the University of Calgary Press's "The West" series, moves the critical debate on the Western genre back to literature and takes a "nationalist" approach - in a way. Chapter 4, "From Law to Outlaw: The Second World War, Westerns, and the '40s Pulps", constitutes another highlight of I The American Western in Canadian Literature i . At the same time, Deshaye seeks to trace the development of the Canadian Western, from the fiction of Ralph Connor and H.A. In this article, the author seeks to address the present function of Canadian criticism by undertaking a meditation on the contemporary Canadian university and stating his own position as a critic of Canadian literature in this institutional framework. The author asks: What are the connections between neoliberalism and cultural nationalism in Canadian political and academic discourse?; and What does it mean to teach and study a "national literature" in a university environment that sees education and scholarship primarily as economic commodities and commodifiers? The author contends that it does not suffice today to reclaim the university as a public sphere of responsible leadership. It is insufficient to argue, as Heather MacIvor (1997) does in "Castles on the Cortex," that as academic intellectuals "we have deliberately . . .abandoned our responsibility to lead and shape public debate. We speak in tongues, deliberately making ourselves incomprehensible to anyone without a Ph.D.---or, indeed, to anyone with a Ph.D. from another discipline. We have squandered our social mission" Not only is MacIvor's assumption that the gulf between the Canadian university and society once was much narrower doubtful and nostalgic-sounding, it also falls short of recognizing that people need to scrutinize the very notion of the modern academic subject's "social mission" in a state structure of elite-representative democracy. People need to radically reconfigure this very understanding of elite-representative social agency and leadership as an issue of equal access to and participation in particular sites of power. The author argues that the key task of contemporary Canadian critics is not to create a greater public presence for human sciences researchers and scholars, but to recover a sense of "the public" from decades of commercialization, privatization, and de-democratization. This paper suggests that a fundamental level of contemporary political struggle is the struggle over thelegitimacy of concepts such as "liberal education," "the public," and "the democratic nation-state." Critical theory can and does function as an important tool in this struggle, as it does in the struggle over the role of the scholar vis-a-vis broader public issues that arise under the current logics and structures of global power. This paper examines two Canadian (Quebecois) novels for young adults, translated from French to English in Canada: "The Road to Chlifa" by Michele Marineau, and "Pieces of Me" by Charlotte Gingras. We examine the representation of adolescent bodies in space and movement, and how these coming of age narratives play out in relation to discourses about nationality and citizenship. This paper suggests that there are subtle differences in sensibilities in works published in French by Quebecois writers and publishers, and that there is evidence of a lingering solitude in relation to young adult literature in Canada. We argue that we need to understand and continue to explicate the complex set of cultural readings and re-readings engendered by these and other coming of age novels that cross real and imagined boundaries of federation and language; that is, we encourage educators to examine representations of adolescent protagonists in relation to the production and reception of literary works that travel within and across our borders.

Margaret Atwood is a Canadian author of more than thirty-five books and the winner of prestigious literary prizes, such as the Booker Prize, the Giller Prize, and the Governor General's Award. Her influence on Canadian literature and contemporary literature as a whole is phenomenal. Nevertheless, little is known with respect to how Atwood represents animals covering the full range of her novels. This paper reports on the analysis of animal representations in Atwood's seventeen novels through Python programming and close reading under the framework of a new semiotic research finding, a pan-indexicality model within the context of literature and the environment. This study investigates the frequencies of animal vocabulary in the seventeen novels, the changes of animal representations in her novels before 1990s and after 1990s, and the implication of the ever-changing animal representations during the fifty years. This paper concludes that nonhuman animal descriptions in Atwood's novels of 1970s and 1980s run at a high level and decrease in her novels of 1990s, while scientific animal descriptions increase in her novels of 2000s and 2010s. Nonhuman animals in her novels of 1970s and 1980s are instrumentalized as a vehicle for indigenization and national individuation from the United States, and scientific animals in her novels of 2000s and 2010s are instrumentalized in the service of environmental apocalypticism. This study suggests that the pan-indexicality model can be employed to understand the meaning of signs in literature and the environment from the perspective of authorial intention, with reference to authors' encyclopedic knowledge, personal experience, social, and cultural background information. While the Künstlerroman may well be considered one of the genres that have blossomed most prominently in the 20th century English-Canadian literature, research investigating its poetics has remained on the fringes of literary scholarship. This paper examines L.M. Montgomery's sophisticated use of the Künstlerinroman through her portraits of female writers in the Emily and Anne series. My goal is to explore how Montgomery's heroines choose to narrate themselves and the world around them, how they transcend difficulties and assert their own unique perspectives. Therefore, this paper examines not only the socio-cultural environment which served as background for the creation of literature, but also the writer's reflections regarding the process of bringing said literature into the world. Drawing on the scholarship of J. Buckley, R. Seret, E. Varsamopoulou, F. Hammill, K. Macfarlane, G.A. Guth and others, this paper aims to analyze L.M. Montgomery's "sophisticated handling of genre" (E.R. Epperly) in greater depth and place her portraits of the female artists within a broader cultural and literary context. The common assumption is that translation helps to share ideas and build bridges between societies, cultures and languages. Nevertheless, in Canadian history translation has been a tool of colonial domination and oppression of indigenous communities as well as francophone minorities scattered across Canada after 1763. In view of the above, this paper aims to show from a translational point of view the attempts to redress decades of persecution and assimilation that are currently taking place, particularly in light of the findings and recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released in June 2015. The analysis covers a unique context, involving the translation of works of Indigenous Literature into a minority language such as French in Canada. After presenting current trends in this area, the paper will discuss an autobiographical novel Halfbreed by Metis author Maria Campbell, which appeared in French translation in 2021 almost half a century after the original was published. This paper discusses experiences of teaching Canadian literature in the Department of Literature, University of Nairobi, Kenya. For a long time, the University of Nairobi syllabus required that teaching Canadian literature, or any foreign literature for that matter, should be related to an African experience. This paper explores a few possible but unworkable ways on how one could relate teaching Canadian literature to an African experience as a way of establishing its relationship to students in Nairobi, Kenya, which is over 10 000 kilometres away from Canada. On the whole, the paper argues that an effective approach to teaching the literature has been formalist that takes into account fidelity to the nature and function of literature, even as it reveals the universal in the particular that makes the form and content of Canadian literature relevant to Kenyan as well as to African experiences. In the end, the paper points out the past experience of teaching and learning Canadian literature must have been valuable to both student and teacher as two seminars held outside the university demonstrate that Kenyans can relate to it for — after all — literature is universal in the particular. This paper analyzes different forms of intertext (biblical, artistic, and mythological) in L.M. Montgomery's bestselling novel Anne of Green Gables in order to determine the novel's intertextual connections with various phenomena of literature and art, and explore how the meanings of these intertextual elements are transformed in Anne of Green Gables as opposed to their original sources. While the plot of Anne Shirley's growing up unravels locally (in a small Canadian town named Avonlea), it is also part of a broader cultural context, which is represented largely by intertextual means (direct and indirect quotations, allusions to the works by R. Browning, H.C. Andersen, W. Shakespeare, L. Carroll, W. Scott et al.). In this way, the author emphasizes Anne's romantic worldview, her open-mindedness and vivid interest in literature, art and nature. By referencing the works of W. Shakespeare and S.T. Coleridge, L.M. Montgomery aims to further illustrate the motive of loneliness and abandonment as they are related to her heroine's story (having lost her parents and spent the majority of her life in an orphan asylum). Biblical intertext also plays an important role when it comes to the relationship between Anne Shirley and Matthew Cuthbert. Different forms of intertext (literary, biblical, mythological) fulfil important functions in the text, especially in terms of creating multi-faceted characters, the social and cultural atmosphere of L.M. This paper addresses the noticeably low presence of Canadian literature in hemispheric American literary research. The fact that hemispheric literary studies focuses on a comparison of the United States and Spanish America is partly because of Canada's marginal position in the Americas, its lack of identification with the continent, and Canadian scholars' reluctance to engage in hemispheric studies due to their insecurity concerning cultural identity and the discipline's potential imperialistic impulses. By examining a representative history of Canadian literature and several literary studies for intersections and tangencies between Canadian literature and other literatures of the Americas, this paper will demonstrate that there are natural links between them, which make a transnational comparative approach to Canadian literature both legitimate and desirable. The Boat People by Sharon Bala, Blue Sunflower Startle by Yasmin Ladha, and Lives of the Family: Stories of Fate and Circumstance, by Denise Chong, are texts that engage with vulnerability as it relates to immigration, one of the most precarious of states or sites that Canadian literature chronicles. The abstract and concrete politics of adaptation are exemplified in these narratives of displacement, inspired by the Tamil refugee crisis of 2009–2010, the Indo-Tanzanian immigration wave of the 1970s, and the resourcefulness of Chinese immigrant families in the mid-twentieth century. These narratives effectively investigate vulnerability within spaces of interconnection, imprisonment, relation, visibility, and transformation. This paper works with their explorations of the Canadian trope of immigration as a process that moves from the vulnerability of strangeness to the vulnerability of adaptation to the vulnerability of commitment. Addressing the ways that these stages are subverted, the paper examines the extent to which migrancy and its resolution resist a "national" narrative in these texts, undercutting the prototype of success through adversity. This paper argues that Robert Kroetsch's novel The Studhorse Man is an exemplification of the prairie and that it is through its interrupted self-conscious narration that Kroetsch completes the act of naming and re-telling, thus claiming the prairie both as a source as well as a perpetrator of history and myth. In his introduction to the 1985 omnibus edition of the "Marchbanks" series, Robertson Davies promised to 'equip the work of Marchbanks with what is called "a scholarly apparatus.'" The apparatus to that volume is the closest that an 'editor' has come to producing a scholarly edition of Davies' fiction. Editors have compiled selected volumes of his non-fiction, his correspondence, and his quotations, but none of his editors has attempted to play the scholarly role that the author himself so thoroughly—albeit gently—mocked in the final instalment of the "Marchbanks" series. Despite Davies' evident amusement at the idea of equipping his writings with a scholarly apparatus, this essay foolishly proposes a theoretical model for a scholarly edition of the "Marchbanks" series. This paper reads Howard Engel's novels Murder on Location (1982) and Dead and Buried (1990) through border theory and as a form of border theory. Engel uses a soft-boiled comic Canadian variant of the hard-boiled American detective novel to explore sites, situations, and symbols of national sovereignty and examine cross-border cultural and ecological flows across the 'soft border' between Canada and the United States along the Niagara frontier, where Engel sets his Benny Cooperman series (1980–2018). After noting that Canadian and American scholars virtually ignore each other in the field of Native Studies, this paper summarizes sources of information for anyone interested in Canadian Native studies. The introduction mentions university programs and departments, newspaper coverage of Native issues, number of books and monographs published per year, and 11 Native studies journals. A list of 66 pioneers who have published in Canadian Native studies is arranged initially by geographic region and then in a rough sequence by date of publication. Each author's major fields of study are included. The list can be used to track down early publications concerning particular topics or Native societies. The final section provides 127 references selected to meet 5 criteria: (1) published since 1970; (2) in English; (3) wide availability in university libraries; (4) comprehensive coverage for an introduction to Canadian Native studies in all its diversity; and (5) good quality within a sub-field of Native studies. Entries are arranged alphabetically under the subject headings of general (5 entries), native authors (8), archaeology (6), art (9), cultural anthropology (25), economics (8), education (2), history (28), linguistics and literature (9), medicine (3), politics and law (12), religion (7), and sociology and social work (5).
