For over forty years, Newport, Rhode Island has sought to preserve much of the city's historic architecture through a local preservation by-law. The work of the Newport Historic District Commission, comprised of volunteer residents appointed by the local city council, has dominated die city's historic preservation values and approach. Not uncommon to many preservation efforts, the emphasis has been almost exclusively on aesthetic rather than contextual values, and has resulted in local practice and preferences that often overlook the associative significance of local historic and cultural resources. An interview with James T. Campbell, chairman of the Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, is presented. He cites that the main object of the committee was to investigate the historical relationship of the university with slavery and the transatlantic slave trade. He states that one of the things that the Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation does is to try to facilitate historical dialogue in divided societies such as Uganda.
