This paper describes a 9-month project commissioned by Halton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Liverpool photography organisation, Open Eye Gallery. Socially engaged photographers worked with local residents from the Windmill Hill estate in Runcorn to describe healthy and unhealthy aspects of the area. Six women were trained to use cameras to document everyday things that mattered to them. Through focus groups they discussed what these photographs revealed about the health and ill-health of the area. The resulting exhibition, As and When, told their story. Despite being a deprived area with more than average incidence of illness, they identified many positive things that enhanced their sense of wellbeing and resilience. The benefits of the project included increased social engagement and participation, an improved sense of vitality and rejuvenation, emotional benefits, a feeling of greater political agency and increased visual literacy. This paper outlines the model of practice developed with the support of CCG and in collaboration with local stakeholders. It makes a case for the value and the ways in which clusters of general practices could develop links and work with health assets in their local communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Primary objective: This project sought to document and describe a public health programme targeting young farmers from hill farming communities in England. Farmers are known to experience physical and mental health inequalities and have a higher mortality rate from suicide than the general population. Research design: Using a case study methodology and guided by Friere's empowerment model of health promotion, the project aimed to improve the self-esteem and self-efficacy of participants. Photography and interviews were used by participants to record their feelings and experiences of farming and convey them to a wider audience. Photographic artists supported the participants through the delivery of skills-based workshops. Outcomes: Participants (n = 100) acquired new skills and demonstrated increased self-confidence. A photographic collection was produced and exhibited across the UK including the House of Commons. Photography was successfully used to engage young people and enabled them to take their views to the heart of the government. The article focuses on the special issue of the Journal of Audiovisual Media in Medicine that was published in 1978 to coincide with the opening of The Medical Picture Show, an IMBI exhibition of medical art and photography at the Science Museum in London, England, which ran from November 16, 1978 to January 27, 1979. Its centre point was a display of the Urban and Schwarzenberg anatomical illustrations. Part of the Journal was devoted to articles relating to the exhibition and reproductions of some of the material on display. The pictures reproduced were designed to give some idea of the range of material on display at the Science Museum and to act as a permanent record of an important and unique event.
