By the end of the 16th century, finger rings in reverse glass painting technique became increasingly popular in Europe. Often, they are used in the context of signet rings with the monogram together with the coat of arms of its beholder depicted on the glass bezel. The following paper concentrates on nine finger rings of this group. Instead of an actual coat of arms though, these finger rings carry the device V(G)MN or FGMN (for-get-me-not) accompanied by a depiction of little blue forget-me-not flowers as the coat of arms. By collecting and describing the so far existing material, the paper aims to contextualize the use and function of the finger rings with the symbol of the forget-me-not flower in the fields of love, friendship and faith. Furthermore, it links the symbol of the for-get-me-not on finger rings and the imperative power of the written letters V(G)MN or FGMN to its tradition in German literature and texts. One of the important artillery manuals of the 15th century is the Feuerwerkbuch. The treatise was one of the first European didactic technical texts, intended for both artillerymen and their employers. After circulating in manuscript copies for over a hundred years, the text was first printed in 1529. By 1619 it had been published thirteen times in total, making it exceptional among military manuals published in Central Europe at that time. The content of the work has been studied by various medievalists and codicologists to date, but they were not usually concerned with later transformations of the publication. The aim of this paper is to characterise the changes in this work between the late Middle Ages and the beginning of the Thirty Years' War and to trace its publication history and its publication relationship to other educational texts. The Wallachian monasteries are very well documented in the 16th century, but the life of nuns or monks after joining the monastery is a lesser-known aspect. Various details can be found in the life of a noblewoman (taking the name of Mușa), who decided to become a nun (Magdalina) during the first years of the 16th century. Mușa's life before entering the monastery is not very well known. Although many researchers tried to link her to the Craiovescu family, one of the most influential families in Wallachia at that time, this paper argues against this opinion. The historical sources describe her as a relative of a Wallachian nobleman, Cârjeu, and as the wife of Hamza, another important nobleman from the first decades of the 16th century. Mușa took vows in the monastery, which she built, and even after she became a nun, she preserved some of her former habits. Thus, the nun Magdalina kept in her possession villages and Roma families, which she donated to different monasteries, a widespread situation in the Byzantine monasticism. The Dispersal of Bananas (Musaspp.) to the Americas in the Sixteenth Century. So far, studies on the spread of banana cultivation in the Americas during the first century of American colonization have given rise to several hypotheses that are not very well supported. In this paper we use different methodologies—ethnobotany, history, and linguistics—to explain how this process occurred and to resolve the doubts that have arisen about the presence of bananas in the Americas before the arrival of the Spanish and Portuguese. To do so, we used philological databases comprising 7,850 documents, produced between 1492 and 1600. This work shows how the speed of the spread of banana cultivation and the presence of foreign varieties in the Americas can be perfectly explained in the light of the historical and ethnobotanical analysis of the accounts written by the inhabitants of the continents in the 16th century. Hasta el momento, los estudios realizados sobre la dispersión del cultivo del plátano en las Américas durante el primer siglo de colonización americana han dado lugar a varias hipótesis poco contrastadas. En el presente trabajo utilizamos diferentes metodologías, etnobotánica, histórica y lingüística, para explicar cómo sucedió este proceso y resolver las dudas aparecidas sobre la presencia de plátanos en las Américas antes de la llegada de españoles y portugueses. Para ello empleamos bases de datos filológicas integradas por 7.850 documentos, realizados entre 1492 y 1600. Este trabajo muestra cómo la velocidad de propagación del cultivo del plátano y la presencia de variedades extrañas en el ámbito americano pueden explicarse perfectamente a la luz del análisis histórico y etnobotánico de los relatos escritos por los habitantes del continente en el siglo XVI. Vital scenarios in the old Jewish quarter of Seville (Spain) in the 16th Century are analyzed. The objectives of this paper are first, to gather up a brief history of the property of some houses of Conversos (Jews who converted to Christianity in the face of the Inquisition); secondly, to study their layout and their construction relating them to emotions in architecture in a transversal way; thirdly, to make hypothetical plans and elevations (including some digital reconstructions); and, finally, to report their current state of preservation. For these purposes, documents have been consulted in Sevillian archives. To analyze these buildings, it was essential to consult the little-known texts called apeos, which were official documents drawn up by the master builders (alarifes) that the owners requested in order to know the conservation of the buildings. An innovative methodology of translating written descriptions into graphics has been developed. Likewise, among the characteristic spaces of the Sevillian houses, more singular ones, such as the reception courtyards, the main rooms, and the women's quarters, have been thoroughly analyzed. The alteration of the entrance of one of the houses due to the historical and emotional context and the importance of the women's quarters (as a religious and vital refuge) are also highlighted. This paper reviews documentary and pictorial evidence from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries concerning the wearing of plaids by men. Initially, sixteenth-century sources that specifically use the term 'plaid' are examined, in order to build a working definition, and this is then applied to earlier sources in languages other than Gaelic, where the terminology is uncertain. The early sources provide insight regarding the origins of traditions associated with plaid wearing. It is suggested that the origins of Highland military dress lie in the west Highlands and Islands in the mid-sixteenth century with the adoption of tartan plaids by local warriors. In this paper the author analyses texts from the Vitae Patrum that appear in the form of exemplum in the four Glagolitic manuscripts from the 16th century that are known as Disipuli. The first part of the paper focuses on the analysis of the Dominican's use of the monastic anecdotes, especially regarding the Latin sermon collection Sermones Discipuli according to which Croatian translation was created. The relationship towards monastic themes in four Glagolitic manuscripts is further compared. In the previous medievistic studies (Hermand 1995) only the sources of the exempla from Herolt's Promptuarium Exemplorum were identified. The sources of several Latin exempla from two Herolt's cycles (sermones de tempore, sermones de sanctis) are here determined for the first time. The research has shown that four exempla were compiled from Verba seniorum and one exemplum is borrowed from the anecdote of John Lycopolis that is written in Historia Lausiaca and Historia monachorum. In the second part of the paper, the linguistic and stylistic characteristics of the exempla are described. The aim of the research is to expand the knowledge about the reception of the Vitae Patrum in the Croatian medieval literature but also about the corpus of Croatian late medieval short narratives. Namely, one part of the Croatian medieval corpus of Vitae Patrum could be substantially completed by exploring sermon collections because they usually contain at least several monastic anecdotes. The Brādōst Kurdish emirate, ruling over Rawāndiz and adjoining areas including parts of Urmīya, is one of the numerous Kurdish ruling families of Kurdistan, which succumbed to the conquering Ottoman and Safavid arms in the 16th-century. While Ardalān, Ḥakkārī, Chamīšgazak, and many other Kurdish emirates were yielded to the several recent studies, Brādōst remained a neglected Kurdish emirate. By analyzing written documents produced during the 16th-century — from both Ottoman and Safavid sources — a better understanding can be had of what political interactions were possible at this emirate in Ottoman-Safavid frontier history. The paper presents the preliminary results of the anthropological analysis of the osteological material from the archaeological excavations conducted at the Mukoše site near Goriš in 2021 and the preliminary results of the anthropological analysis of all the so far investigated and analysed skeletons from that site. The radiocarbon dating obtained from two osteological samples from graves 5 and 6 roughly places the burials at Mukoše in the 16th century. Altogether 16 skeletons from 16 graves were found and analysed: nine subadults up to the age of 10 and seven adults (4 male and 3 female) older than 35 years. The results of the analysis were compared with the available anthropological data for the Early Modern populations from the Dalmatian hinterland (Dalmatinska Zagora), mainly with the results of the anthropological analysis of the osteological assemblage from the Koprivno site near Klis and the Drinovci – Greblje site near Šibenik. The current results suggest that those buried in Mukoše had a somewhat higher standard of living and greater quality of life than their Early Modern counterparts, but further research and informa- tion will provide more concrete comparisons and conclusions regarding the health and diet of the Early Modern population buried at the Mukoše site. The French royal cosmographer André Thevet wrote many works, including Le Grand Insulaire et Pilotage. The second volume of this work (a navigation manual), prepared in manuscript form in 1586, describes the Croatian coast and islands and includes maps of Krk, Pag, Ugljan with Pašman, Čiovo, Brač, Hvar, and Korčula. These achievements are completely unknown in Croatian scientific literature. The subject of this paper is Thevet's maps showing the Croatian islands. Their geographical content is compared to maps published in the second half of the 16th century in isolarios by Giovanni Francesco Camocio (1571), Antonio Millo (1582), and Giuseppe Rosaccio (1598). The study shows that Thevet's maps were completely different from those produced by his contemporaries, especially in terms of the contours of island coastlines and depicted geographical features. Thevet's maps were a reflection of the author's personal competence, primarily his knowledge of geography and methods of spatial data collection, processing and cartographic visualisation, and are also a vivid testimony to French insight into the geography of the eastern Adriatic coast during the Renaissance. This article aims to shed new light on the work of the humanist and Jewish convert Paulus Weidner (1522–1585) by focusing on his use of postbiblical Jewish sources to defend, illustrate, and spread a non-confessional Christian faith both among Jews and among the divided Christians of the Habsburg Monarchy. As such, Weidner was a major figure of the Christian via media promoted at the Habsburg court in Vienna around the mid-16th century. Yet, he retained, at the same time, a profound originality, for his contribution was largely based on the Mishnah. Indeed, Weidner not only proposed Christian interpretations of the Talmud, which he argued could lead to Christian faith but also claimed that the Pirkei Avot could serve as a source of Christian ethics and, as such, ought be added to the Biblical and classical heritage promoted and revered by scholars of his time. This paper analyzes Hungarian-Croatian equivalents in Vrančić's dictionary. It concludes that Vrančić did not know the Croatian equivalents of some of the Latin words, so he created new words on the pattern of the corresponding Hungarian lexemes. His expressions can be classified as various types of loanshifts. It is only his loan translations that prove to be correct, his suggestions are usually wrong either in semantic or functional aspects. The given examples also cast light on the fact that Vrančić is confident, he does not hesitate to create new words and he is ready to ignore some of the rules of word formation as well. This paper focuses on the analysis of Gospel quotes which inform Maximus the Greek's works. Taking into account the point of view of textual tradition, the aim of this preliminary study is both to verify the extent to which his quotes come from the traditional Slavic version of the sacred scriptures and to point out the exegetic relevance of any detected variant. Such a task requires a broad comparison with the Greek tradition and will be carried out referring to critical editions as well as to the corpus of textual nodes compiled by the Münster Institute for New Testament Textual Research (cfr. the series Text und Textwert der griechischen Handschriften des Neuen Testaments). The paper aims to analyze the Spanish expedition headed by Ruy López de Villalobos, that left from New Spain in 1542. Two documents provide different points of view about the same expedition: (i) one official report, written by García Descalante Alvarado in Lisbon, in 1548; (ii) one letter, written by the Jesuit Cosme de Torres (1510-1570) from Goa (India), in 1549. The comparison of the texts shows how the rivalry between the Spanish and the Portuguese kingdoms were running at the time in the Pacific Ocean. The present contribution focuses on three previously unedited letters from the Louvain professor of Latin, Petrus Nannius (Nanninck; 1496–1557), to his patron Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle (1517–1586). The letters, now kept in Madrid at the Biblioteca Nacional de España and Real Biblioteca del Palacio Real, date from November 1545, April 1546, and January 1551. They reveal novel insights with regard to the professor's biography, most notably that by 1551, through his patron's mediation, he enjoyed a prebend from the Dendermonde Chapter and was most likely appointed canon there. By means of these new snippets of information, I reassess and further define the patronus-cliens relationship between Nannius and Granvelle, after which I edit the letters critically for the first time. While the Scottish royal household participated in the wider development of mourning traditions in the late fifteenth century and employed mourning dress as a political tool from at least the turn of the sixteenth century, surviving evidence is extremely limited. Records for the funerals of Queens Madeleine de Valois (d. 1537) and Margaret Tudor (d. 1541) yield the earliest extensive material details for the employment of mourning displays in Scotland. These two funerals both honoured foreign-born queens, they took place only four years apart and they were organised within the same household—yet their use of mourning dress and material display diverged notably. Variations in the design and display of both formal and everyday mourning dress were used to transmit distinct messages and themes, in order to address the particular political circumstances and needs of each death. Comparison between the details of these Scottish funerals and examples from England, France and the Low Countries helps to place Scottish practice within wider traditions and highlights a common emphasis on mourning displays as a central aspect of political discourse and diplomacy at key moments of change and loss. Abstract: Questions associated with the size of ships suggested in historical documents are relevant to giving an idea of the volume of cargoes, the size of crews, cost of freights, or when trying to evaluate competitive advantages in war and commerce. Good estimates are often difficult to obtain from the written record, although some values concerning basic hull dimensions are sometimes mentioned. The establishment of reliable relations between registered capacity, as expressed in coeval documents, and displacement, as it is defined nowadays, would be helpful to both historical and archaeological research. This paper probes into the relations between a number of known formulas to calculate tonnages in the 16th century, and the reconstructed hull of the Pepper Wreck, an archaeologically excavated shipwreck dated to 1606. Analysis of representations of Croatian cities bound into five manuscript atlases: two atlases (signature Cod. 8607 and Cod. 8609) from the Collection of Manuscripts, Documents and Heritage of the Austrian National Library (Handschriften-, Autographen-und Nachlass-Sammlung der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek) in Vienna, two (signature Schr. XXVI, F. 96, Nr. 6 and Schr. XXVI, F. 96, Nr. 11) from the Saxon Central State Archive (Sächsisches Hauptstaatsarchiv) in Dresden and one (signature Hfk. Bd. XV) from the Main Land Archive (Generallandesarchiv) in Karlsruhe. Some of the problems encountered during the research are described and explained in the paper. They are: determination of more accurate data about the first discoveries about the existence of representations of Croatian cities, the titles of the atlases and the time of their production.
