Progress on two-dimensional materials has shown that valleys, as energy extrema in a hexagonal first Brillouin zone, provide a new degree of freedom for information manipulation. Then, valley Hall topological insulators supporting such-polarized edge states on boundaries were set up accordingly. In this paper, a two-dimensional valley crystal composed of six tunable dielectric triangular pillars in each unit cell is proposed in the photonic sense of a deformed Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model. We reveal the vortex nature of valley states and establish the selection rules for valley-polarized states. Based on the valley topology, a rhombus-shaped beam splitter waveguide is designed to verify the valley-chirality selection rule above. Our numerical results entail that this topologically protected edge states still maintain robust transmission at sharp corners, thus providing a feasible idea for valley photonic devices in the THz regime. In this paper, we theoretically study the concept of the wave–particle duality of two entangled neutral Bragg diffracted atoms. This is an extension of a recent study where the same idea was proposed in the photonic setup [Man et al., Sci. Rep. 7, 42539 (2017)] using two independent Mach–Zehnder interferometers. Now, we propose a similar scheme using the cavity-QED based setup, which comprises two independent atomic de Broglie Mach–Zehnder–Bragg interferometers, a source cavity that generates two external momenta state entangled atoms. Once the atoms pass through the source cavity initially prepared in the superposition of zero and one photon, they emerge out of the cavity in entangled momenta state such that if one atom is transmitted to the upper interferometer, then the second atom must traverse the lower interferometer, and vice versa. The final atomic de Broglie beam splitter at the top interferometer is prepared in the superposition of zero and one photon and facilitates observing the wave or particle aspect in a single setting. This entire setup functions in off-resonant Bragg diffraction and the proposed schematics are shown to be experimentally feasible under contemporary research scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents an optical method based on auto-collimation to simultaneously measure five degrees of freedom error motions of the rotary axis. The proposed method consists of the collimated lasers, beam splitters, focusing lens, quadrant photodiode detectors, a high-precision steel ball, and a special mirror fixed to the rotary axis. The mathematical model is established byoptical ray tracing, and the corresponding optical path is also simulated by OpticStudio. Meanwhile, an adjusting mechanism for X–Y micro-displacement, based on the elastic deformation of the material, is designed to adjust the installation eccentricity error of the high-precision steel ball. The calibration results of the proposed system demonstrate that the displacement errors are ±0.25 µm within the measuring range of ±10 µm, and the tilt angle errors are ±0.6 arcsec within the measuring range of ±25 arcsec. Taking a direct drive (DD) motor as the test object, the radial error motions of the rotary axis range from −3.2 to 4.1 µm, the axial error motions range from −4.9 to 4.7 µm, and the tilt error motions around the X and Y axes range from −2.8 to 1.8 arcsec and −2.6 to 2.0 arcsec, respectively. The application of precision interferometers is generally restricted to expensive and smooth high-quality surfaces. Here, we offer a route to ultimate miniaturization of interferometers by integrating a beam splitter, reference mirror, and light collector into a single optical element, an interference lens (iLens), which produces stable high-contrast fringes from the in situ surface of paper, wood, plastic, rubber, unpolished metal, human skin, etc. A self-referencing real-time precision of a sub-20 picometer (∼λ/30 000) is demonstrated with simple intensity detection under ambient conditions. The principle of iLens interferometry has been exploited to build a variety of compact devices, such as a paper-based optical picobalance, having 1000 times higher sensitivity and speed, when compared with a high-end seven-digit electronic balance. Furthermore, we used cloth, paper, and polymer films to readily construct broadband acoustic sensors possessing matched or higher sensitivity when compared with piezo and electromagnetic sensors. In this paper, we present a kind of periodical ternary parity-time (PT)-symmetric multilayers to realize nearly 100% reflectance and transmittance simultaneously when light is incident from a certain direction. This extraordinary reflection and transmission is original from unidirectional Bragg reflection of PT-symmetric systems as the symmetry spontaneous breaking happens at PT thresholds. The extra energy involved in reflection and transmission lights is obtained from pumping light to the gain regions of the structure. Moreover, we find that our PT-symmetric structure shows direction dependent wavelength selectivity. When the illumination light is incident from two opposite directions into the multilayer structure, such extraordinary reflection and transmission appear at visible and near-infrared wavelengths, respectively. Such distinguishing properties may provide these structures with attractive applications as beam splitters, laser mirrors, narrow band filters, and multiband PT-symmetric optical devices. In this paper, using the language of spin-half particles, Hardy’s paradox is examined within different semantics: a partial one, a many-valued one, and the one defined as a set of weak values of projection operators. This paper deals with the development and construction of an apparatus for time-resolved tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (LAS) for the diagnostics of pulsed plasma. A detailed description of the extension of a progressive method of laser absorption spectroscopy in continuous regime to a direct triggering method of the time-resolved laser absorption spectroscopy (TR-LAS) is presented. The main advantage of the developed method is its capability to measure the time evolution of the whole absorption profile with a preset time resolution, which can be less than 1 μs. Therefore, the presented method of repetitive sampling applied onLASin plasma processes is capable of simultaneous measurement of the density and kinetic temperature of selected particles. Its appropriate applications are to periodical processes in technological plasma, namely pulsed plasma discharges. The developed method of TR-LAS was applied to measurements of the temporal evolution of density and kinetic temperature of argon metastable species during high-power impulse magnetron sputtering of titanium and titanium dioxide thin films. In the paper we present a low cost optical device which splits the light in the focal plane into two separate optical paths and collimates it back into a single image plane, and where a selective information processing can be carried out. The optical system is straightforward and easily implementable as it consists of only three lenses and two mirrors. The system is dedicated for imaging in low-light-level conditions in which widely used optical devices, based on beam splitters or dichroic mirrors, suffer from light loss. We expose examples of applications of our device, using a prototype model. The proposed optical system may be employed for: monitoring the objects located at different distances from observer (1), creating regions of different magnification within a single image plane (2), high dynamic range photometry (3), or imaging in two wavelength bands simultaneously (4). This paper presents an approach of an innovative measurement principle for the quality control of viscous materials during a manufacturing process based on fluorescence imaging. The main contribution to the state of the art provided by this measurement system is that three equal fluorescence images of a static or moving viscous object are available in different optical paths. The independent images are obtained by two beam splitters which are connected in series. Based on these images, it is possible to evaluate each image separately. In our case, three optical bandpass filters with different center wavelengths of 405 nm, 420 nm, and 440 nm were used to filter the separate fluorescence images. The developed system is useable for the detection of impurities in the micrometer range. Further, incorrect mixing ratios of particular components and wrong single components in the viscous materials can be detected with the setup. Moreover, it is possible to realize static and dynamic measurements. In this case the maximum speed of the objects was 0.2 m/s for the dynamic measurements. Advantages of this measurement setup are the universality due to the use of optical standard components, the small dimension and the opportunity to integrate it easily into ongoing processes. In addition, the measurement system works on a non-contact basis. Thus, the expense for maintenance is at a very low level compared to currently available measurement setups for the investigated application. Furthermore, the setup provides for the first time a simultaneous analysis of more than one component and the detection of impurities concerning their nature and size in a manufacturing process. Fast visible cameras and a filterscope are used to examine the visible light emission from Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Proto-MPEX. The filterscope has been configured to perform helium line ratio measuremens using emission lines at 667.9, 728.1, and 706.5 nm. The measured lines should be mathematically inverted and the ratios compared to a collisional radiative model (CRM) to determine Te and ne. Increasing the number of measuremen chords through the plasma improves the inversion calculation and subsequen Te and ne localization. For the filterscope, one spatial chord measuremen requires three photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) connected to pellicle beam spliTers. Multiple, fast visible cameras with narrowband filters are an alternate technique for performing these measuremens with superior spatial resolution. Each camera conains millions of pixels; each pixel is analogous to one filterscope PMT. The data can then be inverted and the ratios compared to the CRM to determine 2-dimensional "images" of Te and ne in the plasma.
