In Visions of the Sociological Tradition Donald N. Levine presents a view of the German sociological tradition that emphasizes its origins in philosophical idealism. This paper discusses the implications of this view for understanding the formation of sociology in Germany. The author suggests that Levine's account can be supplemented and strengthened by reconstructing the German tradition both as an effort to proceed without foundational philosophical systems and as an outgrowth of social economics and the historical school of political economy. This article presents an account of Jewish contribution to the development of sexology. The overwhelming majority of the sexological pioneers were Jews. Thus, there can be no doubt that the systematic destruction of their work at the hands: of the Nazis was at least in part motivated by anti-Semitism. Of course, German dictator Adolf Hitler's hatred for all modern human sciences, modern art, criticism, enlightenment, ethnic tolerance, and social and sexual reform also had something to do with it. Under the circumstances, the prominence of German and Austrian Jews in all humanistic and humanitarian efforts became an additional liability to them. Actually, although it is true that the creation of modern sexology was mostly the work of German and Austrian Jews, it had one great and venerable precedent in medieval Islamic science. Indeed, the first flowering of studies that can be called sexological in the current sense is preserved in numerous Arabic manuscripts dating from the 10th to the 13 century. They represent a whole other important scientific tradition of which few modern sexologists is aware, which is only now being reinvestigated, and which deserves extensive discussion else where.
