URBAN planning ,CITIES & towns ,INFORMATION technology ,URBAN ecology (Sociology) - Abstract
Although hackathon is generally known and used event-format in the world of software engineering, it has in recent years also been used in other fields, as i.e. participatory urbanism, in US often referred to as civic hackathon. Hackathon in general is an event at which problems are solved in a limited time frame with intense participant collaboration. The focus of a hackathon is usually predefined; however creativity in problem solving is at the forefront of all activities. The paper will describe the specifics of urban hackathon, a derivative form of civic hackathon, which uses similar approach, harnessing the potential of information technologies and stakeholders involvement in the field of urban development and urban renewal. Despite vast amount of information and unprecedented potentials of existing technologies, they are not being used to full potential in the practise of urban development. At the same time, the importance of horizontal integration between different professions, inclusion of stakeholders, communities and researchers is increasingly becoming the central theme in managing the contemporary urban environment. Through the analysis of existing literature and web sources the paper presents hackathons dealing with urban issues worldwide and their characteristics. Furthermore, thorough the case-study analysis of tools, processes and experiences of three urban hackathons held in Maribor/Slovenia in 2015 as a part of the Actors of urban change program (Living city project), the paper describes the impacts of this approach on public discourse and actions taken in solving the urban renewal problems in the city of Maribor. We examined patterns of change and stability in four individual-level higher-order groups of Schwartz personal values among individuals during societal lockdown caused by COVID-19 epidemic. The study involves comparison of personal values of 85 business students during societal lockdown, with their personal values in pre- and post-pandemic periods. Sampled group of individuals includes undergraduate and graduate students from University of Maribor, Faculty of Economics and Business, Maribor, Slovenia. Contrary to previous publications, our results indicate a decrease of mean-level for all four higher-order groups of individuals' values during societal lockdown of COVID-19. In the value hierarchy, self-transcendence values remain first, followed by conservation, openness to change, and self-enhancement values. In the period after the COVID-19, personal values again approached their pre-pandemic levels. Self-transcendence and conservation returned close to baseline levels, while openness to change and self-enhancement values exceeded initial pre-epidemic levels. In the value hierarchy, lead openness to change values, followed by the self-transcendence, self-enhancement, and conservation values. We discuss perceived changes in business students' values due to the COVID-19 pandemic and present their capacities for dealing with potential unfavorable and threatening circumstances in the future. URBAN renewal ,CULTURAL maintenance - Abstract
The question of recovering the architectural heritage of Maribor in the post-war period -- not just restoration but revitalization -- found fertile ground in Slovenian architectural culture. During that time, Maribor, the second largest city in Slovenia, developed primarily as a productive industrial center. Following the construction of the Srednja Drava 1 hydroelectric power plant in 1966, the level of the Drava River rose, and it was necessary to demolish some late medieval and Baroque buildings of the ancient port of Pristan (Lent). That area became the epicenter of urban revitalization in the 1970s and 1980s, animated especially by architects Branko Kocmut, Bogdan Reichenberg, and Igor Recer. These interventions entailed a search for reconciliation between the methods of the Yugoslav socialist idea of self-management and the requests for a historic center in the city that would serve both cultural and recreational-tourist purposes for many years. UNIVERSITY of Maribor (Maribor, Slovenia) ,ACADEMIC libraries ,LITERACY ,SECONDARY education ,HIGH school students - Abstract
This article discusses the role of the University of Maribor Library in the process of library information literacy training for high school students of Maribor, Slovenia. Based on the annual education plan Library Information Literacy Training for High School Students at the University of Maribor Library (UKM) in the 2009/2010 academic year, in this paper, we describe that development and content of education modules offered to high school students by the University of Maribor Library. We then present the students' evaluation of the quality of the modules and the level of fulfilled expectations of the students. The questionnaire results led to the conclusion that the higher the percentage of students who regard the education modules (classes) as beneficial influence on their success in further education and the higher the level of their fulfilled expectations, the more important the role of the UKM is in the process of information literacy training of the high school students. The research results led to the conclusion that the University of Maribor Library, with minor adjustments of the modules, can competently cooperate in the process of information literacy training of high school students and, therefore, prepare future students for the use of the library services as university student and contribute to the processes of lifelong education and personal growth of the participants. Abstract: This paper presents the outcomes of a research and development project carried out at the University of Maribor, Construction IT Centre, with regard to the introduction of a building information model (BIM) and a model based construction process into the operational environment of a construction company. The initiative for the project came from the industry and was performed as a joined effort of the research organization and the construction company. Work was performed in the scope of an industrialized construction environment, with the main aim to integrate mass production prefabrication processes with construction site activities. BIM was used as a link between an enterprise resource planning (ERP) information system that supports manufacturing process and construction object related information, mainly handled by CAD tools. The benefits of this link are presented with regard to project progress monitoring and material flow management. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

SUSTAINABLE development , *COMMUNITY development , *ACADEMIC-industrial collaboration , *COLLABORATIVE learning ,UNIVERSITY of Maribor (Maribor, Slovenia) - Abstract
Abstract: This paper presents the current position and role of the University of Maribor (UM) in linking stakeholders, in order to achieve sustainable regional development. A strategic approach is proposed for facilitating collaboration of the UM with regional development agencies, the local community and industry, based on collaborative learning and development. Furthermore, elements contributing to a successful learning partnership are identified together with the barriers. The results show that regional stakeholders (university, municipality, NGOs, and companies) are commonly engaged in a sustainable regional development, but their activities are not sufficiently linked. The strategic approach, and collaborative learning have led to many on-going SD projects within the University of Maribor. Room for improvement exists, regarding external university collaboration, especially in the fields of research, knowledge transfer, technological development, dissemination of information, education, and innovations. The elevation of airport runways is specified in the operations manuals and in globally accepted design guidelines. Airport runways are constantly exposed to various physical and weather factors. However, these factors can deteriorate the condition of the runway to the point where it becomes unusable. Monitoring and the continuous inspection of runway evenness is an important element of a sustainable airport maintenance system. An important element of a sustainable airport maintenance system is a runway evenness detection and modelling system. The investigation of the use of various available methods for modelling runway evenness was conducted based on measurements of the actual condition of the existing runway at Edvard Rusjan Airport in Maribor, Slovenia. During the measurements of the runway condition, our own measurement equipment was used, which ensures the geodetic accuracy of the measurements. The novelty of the article is a comparison between five different approaches to modelling runway evenness: approximation with regression plane, inverse distance weighted interpolation (IWD) with a weighting factor of 1, 2, and 10, and interpolation based on a triangulated irregular network (TIN)–linear and cubic. In the methodology section, the advantages and disadvantages of the mentioned methods were described. The selected models were evaluated by required processor time, by the file size resulting from the modelling, and by the values of the descriptive statistics of the model deviation at the average uniform slope. It was found that the modelling method using linear triangular irregular network interpolation provided the most useful results. The results of the conducted analysis can be easily used in any runway management models at airport thet allow for professionally based actions aimed at ensuring the safety and efficiency of runway operations, especially at smaller, regional airports. HAZEL ,PHENOLOGY ,CROP management ,UPPER air temperature - Abstract
Knowledge of plant-weather relationships can improve crop management, resulting in higher quality and more stable crop yields. The annual timing of spring phenophases in mid-latitudes is largely a response to temperature, and reflects the thermal conditions of previous months. The effect of air temperature on the variability of hazelnut ( Corylus avellana L.) phenophases (leafing, flowering) was investigated. Meteorological and phenological data for five cultivars were analysed over the periods 1969-1979 (P1) and 1994-2007 (P2) in Maribor, Slovenia. Phenological data series were correlated strongly to the temperature of the preceding months ( R: 0.64-0.98) and better correlated to daily maximum and mean temperatures than to daily minimum temperatures. About 75% of phenophases displayed a tendency towards earlier appearance and a shorter flowering duration during P2, which could be explained by the significant temperature changes (+0.3°C/decade) from December to April between 1969 and 2007. An increase in air temperature of 1°C caused an acceleration in leafing by 2.5-3.9 days, with flowering showing higher sensitivity since a 1°C increase promoted male flowering by 7.0-8.8 days and female flowering by 6.3-8.9 days. The average rate of phenological change per degree of warming (days earlier per +1°C) did not differ significantly between P1 and P2. An estimation of chilling accumulation under field conditions during 1993-2009, between 1 November and 28 February, showed that all four of these months contributed approximately similar amounts of accumulated chilling units. The growing degree days (GDD) to flowering were calculated by an estimated base temperature of 2°C and 1 January as a starting date, given the most accurate calculations. In general, thermal requirements were greater in P2 than in P1, although this difference was not significant. Longer-time series data extended to other agricultural and wild plants would be helpful in tracking possible future changes in phenological responses to local climate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are two most commonly used methods for calibration of thread rings, with different measuring uncertainty. The method of mechanical sensing with two balls is mostly used on one-axial measuring machines and on coordinate measuring machines. However, the method of calculating the core diameter of the thread ring combined with the technique of adaptation (in accordance with the method of the smallest squares) is used on the profile scanner. The required tolerances, which are very narrow for adjustable and laboratory thread ring, so the measuring uncertainty may be too high when using the method of mechanical sensing with two balls, and the low quality of some control rings, are the decisive factors for choosing an appropriate method in the industry. This also depends on the laboratory's capability of executing a specific method. The measurements of the core diameter of thread rings, which are the main topic of this article, were included into an international inter-comparison in which the main subject was the same thread ring as the one mentioned in this article.
