Given the climate change in recent decades and the ever-increasing energy consumption in the building sector, research is widely focused on the green revolution and ecological transition of buildings. In this regard, artificial intelligence can be a precious tool to simulate and optimize building energy performance, as shown by a plethora of recent studies. Accordingly, this paper provides a review of more than 70 articles from recent years, i.e., mostly from 2018 to 2023, about the applications of machine/deep learning (ML/DL) in forecasting the energy performance of buildings and their simulation/control/optimization. This review was conducted using the SCOPUS database with the keywords "buildings", "energy", "machine learning" and "deep learning" and by selecting recent papers addressing the following applications: energy design/retrofit optimization, prediction, control/management of heating/cooling systems and of renewable source systems, and/or fault detection. Notably, this paper discusses the main differences between ML and DL techniques, showing examples of their use in building energy simulation/control/optimization. The main aim is to group the most frequent ML/DL techniques used in the field of building energy performance, highlighting the potentiality and limitations of each one, both fundamental aspects for future studies. The ML approaches considered are decision trees/random forest, naive Bayes, support vector machines, the Kriging method and artificial neural networks. The DL techniques investigated are convolutional and recursive neural networks, long short-term memory and gated recurrent units. Firstly, various ML/DL techniques are explained and divided based on their methodology. Secondly, grouping by the aforementioned applications occurs. Wind power is a critical source of renewable energy, but the variability of wind speed can impact the efficiency and reliability of wind power generation. To improve the accuracy of wind speed prediction, this paper proposes a novel system that combines deep learning and decomposition algorithms based on ensemble optimization methods. Firstly, the paper proposes an innovative hybrid modal decomposition (HMD) method that extracts accurate features from wind speed data using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), modal number selection method, and Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD). Secondly, the variable screening method identifies relevant factors affecting wind speed as fixed inputs. Then, the stationary test method is used to identify the sequences of different features in the mode and establish different prediction models: a bidirectional long-term short-time neural network model (Bi-LSTM) model optimized by artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA) is used for non-stationary sequences; an ARIMA model is used for stationary sequences. Data from Sotavento and Changma wind farms are used to test this forecasting system. Simulation experiments are carried out from multiple dimensions. Accurate and interpretable short-term load forecasting tasks are essential to the optimal operation of liberalized electricity markets since they contribute to the efficient development of energy trading and demand response strategies as well as the successful integration of renewable energy sources. Consequently, performant day-ahead consumption forecasting models need to capture feature nonlinearities, analyze system dynamics and conserve evolving temporal patterns in order to minimize the impact of noise and adapt to concept drift. Prominent estimators and standalone decomposition-based approaches may not fully address those challenges as they often yield small error rate improvements and omit optimal time series evolution. Therefore, in this work we propose a combinatorial component decomposition method focused on the selection of important renewable generation component sequences extracted from the combined output of seasonal-trend decomposition using locally estimated scatterplot smoothing, singular spectrum analysis and empirical mode decomposition methods. The proposed method was applied on five well-known kernel models in order to evaluate day-ahead consumption forecasts on linear, tree-based and neural network structures. Moreover, for the assessment of pattern conservation, an intuitive metric function, labeled as Weighted Average Unanchored Chain Divergence (WAUCD), based on distance scores and unanchored time series chains is introduced. The results indicated that the application of the combinatorial component method improved the accuracy and the pattern conservation capabilities of most models substantially. In this examination, the long short-term memory (LSTM) and deep neural network (DNN) kernels reduced their mean absolute percentage error by 46.87% and 42.76% respectively and predicted sequences that consistently evolved over 30% closer to the original target in terms of daily and weekly patterns. Recent advancements in data science and artificial intelligence, as well as the development of clean and sustainable energy sources, have created numerous opportunities for energy researchers to conduct their studies. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques have been applied to Renewable Energy Systems (RES) for several years, and their intensity and scope have grown in recent years. Since artificial intelligence and machine learning have a wide range of applications, it may be difficult to select and implement suitable methods for future research. In order to address this issue, this study examines several of the most popular and well-known AI techniques in renewable energy. This paper describes over ten of the most prevalent RES modeling and optimization algorithms, including Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Long and Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Recurrent and Convolutional Neural Networks (RNNs and CNNs), the Genetic Algorithm (GA), and the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (PSO). More than a hundred different studies between 2020 and 2022 have been compiled and organized in the results section according to the method used and the field of application. The efforts to revolutionize electric power generation and produce clean and sustainable electricity have led to the exploration of renewable energy systems (RES). This form of energy is replenished and cost-effective in terms of production and maintenance. However, RES, such as solar and wind energies, is intermittent; this is one of the drawbacks of its usage. In order to overcome this limitation, studies have been undertaken to forecast its availability and power output. The current trending method of forecasting availability and the power generated by the RES is the artificial intelligence (AI) method. However, with all its potential, traditional AI, such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and many more, does not have it all. Because of this, metaheuristic algorithms are being explored as optimization techniques to increase the performance accuracy of these AI forecasting methods and overcome some challenges of traditional AI models. This study presents an insightful survey of AI (traditional AI and metaheuristic) methods explored to forecast the availability of solar and wind renewable energy systems. A survey of the existing surveyed literature was presented. The taxonomy of the explored AI in RES was formulated, and the theoretical backgrounds of some of the traditional AI algorithms were presented. Also, the various forms of metaheuristic algorithms and the improved versions applied to optimize classical AI methods to forecast RES systems' availability and power output were surveyed. A conceptual framework of the hybrid AI application in RES was formulated. Finally, the survey discussion, insight, challenges of the existing models and future directions were presented. There are global efforts to deploy Electric Vehicles (EVs) because of the role they promise to play in energy transition. These efforts underscore the e-mobility paradigm, representing an interplay between renewable energy resources, smart technologies, and networked transportation. However, there are concerns that these initiatives could burden the electricity grid due to increased demand. Hence, the need for accurate short-term load forecasting is pivotal for the efficient planning, operation, and control of the grid and associated power systems. This study presents robust models for forecasting half-hourly and hourly loads in the UK's power system. The work leverages machine learning techniques such as Support Vector Regression (SVR), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) to develop robust prediction models using the net imports dataset from 2010 to 2020. The models were evaluated based on metrics like Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Prediction Error (MAPE), Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD), and the Correlation of Determination (R2). For half-hourly forecasts, SVR performed best with an R-value of 99.85%, followed closely by GPR and ANN. But, for hourly forecasts, ANN led with an R-value of 99.71%. The findings affirm the reliability and precision of machine learning methods in short-term load forecasting, particularly highlighting the superior accuracy of the SVR model for half-hourly forecasts and the ANN model for hourly forecasts.
