Machine learning, powered by cloud servers, has found application in medical diagnosis, enhancing the capabilities of smart healthcare services. Research literature demonstrates that the support vector machine (SVM) consistently demonstrates remarkable accuracy in medical diagnosis. Nonetheless, safeguarding patients' health data privacy and preserving the intellectual property of diagnosis models is of paramount importance. This concern arises from the common practice of outsourcing these models to third-party cloud servers that may not be entirely trustworthy. Few studies in the literature have delved into addressing these issues within SVM-based diagnosis systems. These studies, however, typically demand substantial communication and computational resources and may fail to conceal classification results and protect model intellectual property. This paper aims to tackle these limitations within a multi-class SVM medical diagnosis system. To achieve this, we have introduced modifications to an inner product encryption cryptosystem and incorporated it into our medical diagnosis framework. Notably, our cryptosystem proves to be more efficient than the Paillier and multi-party computation cryptography methods employed in previous research. Although we focus on a medical application in this paper, our approach can also be used for other applications that need the evaluation of machine learning models in a privacy-preserving way such as electricity theft detection in the smart grid, electric vehicle charging coordination, and vehicular social networks. To assess the performance and security of our approach, we conducted comprehensive analyses and experiments. Our findings demonstrate that our proposed method successfully fulfills our security and privacy objectives while maintaining high classification accuracy and minimizing communication and computational overhead. Background and aim: Parkinson's disease (PD), a neuro-degenerative disorder, is often detected by the onset of its motor symptoms such as rest tremor. Unfortunately, motor symptoms appear only when approximately 40–60% of the dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra are lost. In most cases, by the time PD is clinically diagnosed, the disease may already have started 4 to 6 years beforehand. There is therefore a need for developing a test for detecting PD before the onset of motor symptoms. This phase of PD is referred to as Presymptomatic PD (PPD). The motor symptoms of Parkinson's Disease are manifestations of instability in the sensorimotor system that develops gradually due to the neurodegenerative process. In this paper, based on the above insight, we propose a new method that can potentially be used to detect the degradation of motor control stability, which can be employed for the detection of PPD. Methods: The proposed method tracks the tendency of a feedback control system to transition to an unstable state and uses a machine learning algorithm for its robust detection. This method is explored using a simple simulation example consisting of a simple pendulum with a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller as a conceptual representation for both healthy and PPD individuals with a noise variance of 0.01 and a noise variance of 0.1. The present study adopts a longitudinal design to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Specifically, the performance of the proposed approach, with specific choices of features, is compared to that of the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm for machine learning under conditions of incremental delay-induced instability. This comparison is made with results obtained using the Longitudinal Support Vector Machine (LSVM) algorithm for machine learning, which is better suited for longitudinal studies. Results: The results of SVM with one choice of features are comparable with the results of LSVM for a noise variance of 0.01. These results are almost unaffected by a noise variance of 0.1. All of the methods showed a high sensitivity above 96% and specificity above 98% on a training data set. In addition, they perform very well with the validation synthetic data set with sensitivity above 95% and specificity above 98%. These results are robust to further increases in noise variance representing the large variances expected in patient populations. Conclusions: The proposed method is evaluated on a synthetic data set, and the machine learning results show a promise and potential for use for detecting PPD through an early diagnostic device. In addition, an example task with physiological measurement that can potentially be used as a clinical movement control test along with representative data from both healthy individuals and PD patients is also presented, demonstrating the feasibility of performing a longitudinal study to validate and test the robustness of the proposed method. Alzheimer's is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting the central nervous system and cognitive processes, explicitly impairing detailed mental analysis. Throughout this condition, the affected individual's cognitive abilities to process and analyze information gradually deteriorate, resulting in mental decline. In recent years, there has been a notable increase in endeavors aimed at identifying Alzheimer's disease and addressing its progression. Research studies have demonstrated the significant involvement of genetic factors, stress, and nutrition in developing this condition. The utilization of computer-aided analysis models based on machine learning and artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly enhance the exploration of various neuroimaging methods and non-image biomarkers. This study conducts a comparative assessment of more than 80 publications that have been published since 2017. Alzheimer's disease detection is facilitated by utilizing fundamental machine learning architectures such as support vector machines, decision trees, and ensemble models. Furthermore, around 50 papers that utilized a specific architectural or design approach concerning Alzheimer's disease were examined. The body of literature under consideration has been categorized and elucidated through the utilization of data-related, methodology-related, and medical-fostering components to illustrate the underlying challenges. The conclusion section of our study encompasses a discussion of prospective avenues for further investigation and furnishes recommendations for future research activities on the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) refers to the gradual decline of kidney function over months or years. Early detection of CKD is crucial and significantly affects a patient's decreasing health progression through several methods, including pharmacological intervention in mild cases or hemodialysis and kidney transportation in severe cases. In the recent past, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models have become important in the medical diagnosis domain due to their high prediction accuracy. The performance of the developed model mainly depends on choosing the appropriate features and suitable algorithms. Accordingly, the paper aims to introduce a novel ensemble DL approach to detect CKD; multiple methods of feature selection were used to select the optimal selected features. Moreover, we study the effect of the optimal features chosen on CKD from the medical side. The proposed ensemble model integrates pretrained DL models with the support vector machine (SVM) as the metalearner model. Extensive experiments were conducted by using 400 patients from the UCI machine learning repository. The results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed model in CKD prediction compared to other models. Conventional methodology in the field for the sampling of coffee leaf rust, caused by Hemileia vastatrix, has proven to be impractical. This paper proposes a method for the early detection of this disease, which is the most significant pathogen of coffee plants worldwide, using multispectral images acquired using a Mapir Survey3W camera and an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). For this purpose, 160 coffee seedlings of the coffee cultivar 'Mundo Novo' were inoculated with urediniospores of H. vastatrix and compared with 160 control (non-inoculated) seedlings to determine the most favorable interval for distinguishing healthy and infected plants. The 320 seedlings were placed on a dark surface to perform the imaging flights. In vitro analyses of the physiological parameters of 20 specimens were then performed for each condition (inoculated/non-inoculated) to obtain the hyperspectral curves, and this process was repeated three times at 15, 30, and 45 days after inoculation (DAI). Based on the simulated hyperspectral curves, a discrepancy between the red and near-infrared (NIR) bands was identified at 15 DAI, with the inoculated plants showing greater absorption in the red band and a greater spectral response in the NIR band. Thus, multispectral images were able to distinguish H. vastatrix infection in coffee seedlings at an asymptomatic stage (15 DAI) using a support vector machines (SVM) algorithm. Detection accuracy was 80% and the Kappa index of agreement was moderate (0.6). The early detection of this pathogen in the field using low-cost technology can be an important tool for the monitoring of coffee leaf rust and, consequently, a more sustainable management of the pathogen, causing farmers to make applications of chemical fungicides only when necessary. Automatic heart disease prediction is a major global health concern. Effective cardiac treatment requires an accurate heart disease prognosis. Therefore, this paper proposes a new heart disease classification model based on the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm for improved heart disease detection. To increase prediction accuracy, the χ2 statistical optimum feature selection technique was used. The suggested model's performance was then validated by comparing it to traditional models using several performance measures. The proposed model increased accuracy from 85.29% to 89.7%. Early detection of mesothelioma, a severe form of cancer commonly associated with asbestos exposure, is a significant challenge that greatly affects prognosis. This study addresses this issue using Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, including Gradient-Boosted Trees (GBT), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Logistic Regression (LR). This study uses the mesothelioma dataset from the UCI Machine Learning Repository to evaluate the proposed models, achieving 100% accuracy and F1 score in detecting the disease, accurately classifying 98 patients with 30 true positives and 68 true negatives. Further analysis using the AUC-ROC score showed that the 'duration of symptoms' feature was most informative for the GBT model, with a score of 0.595. In contrast, 'C-reactive protein' was the most significant feature for the SVM and LR models, each achieving an AUC-ROC of 0.603. Despite these promising results, validating these findings with additional datasets is critical to confirm their generalisability. This paper reviews applications of machine learning (ML) predictive models in the diagnosis of chronic diseases. Chronic diseases (CDs) are responsible for a major portion of global health costs. Patients who suffer from these diseases need lifelong treatment. Nowadays, predictive models are frequently applied in the diagnosis and forecasting of these diseases. In this study, we reviewed the state-of-the-art approaches that encompass ML models in the primary diagnosis of CD. This analysis covers 453 papers published between 2015 and 2019, and our document search was conducted from PubMed (Medline), and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) libraries. Ultimately, 22 studies were selected to present all modeling methods in a precise way that explains CD diagnosis and usage models of individual pathologies with associated strengths and limitations. Our outcomes suggest that there are no standard methods to determine the best approach in real-time clinical practice since each method has its advantages and disadvantages. Among the methods considered, support vector machines (SVM), logistic regression (LR), clustering were the most commonly used. Chagas disease, caused by the Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) parasite, is the third most common parasitosis worldwide. Most of the infected subjects can remain asymptomatic without an opportune and early detection or an objective diagnostic is not conducted. Frequently, the disease manifests itself after a long time, accompanied by severe heart disease or by sudden death. Thus, the diagnosis is a complex and challenging process where several factors must be considered. In this paper, a novel pipeline is presented integrating temporal data from four modalities (electrocardiography signals, echocardiography images, Doppler spectrum, and ELISA antibody titers), multiple features selection analyses by a univariate analysis and a machine learning-based selection. The method includes an automatic dichotomous classification of animal status (control vs. infected) based on Random Forest, Extremely Randomized Trees, Decision Trees, and Support Vector Machine. The most relevant multimodal attributes found were ELISA (IgGT, IgG1, IgG2a), electrocardiography (SR mean, QT and ST intervals), ascending aorta Doppler signals, and echocardiography (left ventricle diameter during diastole). Concerning automatic classification from selected features, the best accuracy of control vs. acute infection groups was 93.3 ± 13.3% for cross-validation and 100% in the final test; for control vs. chronic infection groups, it was 100% and 100%, respectively. This study systematically examines pediatric adnexal torsion, proposing a diagnostic approach using machine learning techniques to distinguish it from acute appendicitis. Our retrospective analysis involved 41 female pediatric patients divided into two groups: 21 with adnexal torsion (group 1) and 20 with acute appendicitis (group 2). In group 1, the average age was 10 ± 2.6 years, while in group 2, it was 9.8 ± 21.9 years. Our analysis found no statistically significant age distinctions between these two groups. Despite acute lower abdominal pain being a common factor, group 1 displayed shorter pain duration (28.9 h vs. 46.8 h, p < 0.05), less vomiting (28% vs. 50%, p < 0.05), lower fever incidence (4.7% vs. 50%, p < 0.05), reduced leukocytosis (57% vs. 75%, p < 0.05), and CRP elevation (30% vs. 80%, p < 0.05) compared to group 2. Machine learning techniques, specifically support vector classifiers, were employed using clinical presentation, pain duration, white blood cell counts, and ultrasound findings as features. The classifier consistently demonstrated an average predictive accuracy of 87% to 97% in distinguishing adnexal torsion from appendicitis, as confirmed across various SVM models employing different kernels. Our findings emphasize the capacity of support vector machines (SVMs) and machine learning as a whole to augment diagnostic accuracy when distinguishing between adnexal torsion and acute appendicitis. The remarkable recent advances in managing keratoconus, the most common corneal ectasia, encouraged researchers to conduct further studies on the disease. Despite the abundance of information about keratoconus, debates persist regarding the detection of mild cases. Early detection plays a crucial role in facilitating less invasive treatments. This review encompasses corneal data ranging from the basic sciences to the application of artificial intelligence in keratoconus patients. Diagnostic systems utilize automated decision trees, support vector machines, and various types of neural networks, incorporating input from various corneal imaging equipment. Although the integration of artificial intelligence techniques into corneal imaging devices may take time, their popularity in clinical practice is increasing. Most of the studies reviewed herein demonstrate a high discriminatory power between normal and keratoconus cases, with a relatively lower discriminatory power for subclinical keratoconus. In machine learning and data science, feature selection is considered as a crucial step of data preprocessing. When we directly apply the raw data for classification or clustering purposes, sometimes we observe that the learning algorithms do not perform well. One possible reason for this is the presence of redundant, noisy, and non-informative features or attributes in the datasets. Hence, feature selection methods are used to identify the subset of relevant features that can maximize the model performance. Moreover, due to reduction in feature dimension, both training time and storage required by the model can be reduced as well. In this paper, we present a tri-stage wrapper-filter-based feature selection framework for the purpose of medical report-based disease detection. In the first stage, an ensemble was formed by four filter methods—Mutual Information, ReliefF, Chi Square, and Xvariance—and then each feature from the union set was assessed by three classification algorithms—support vector machine, naïve Bayes, and k-nearest neighbors—and an average accuracy was calculated. The features with higher accuracy were selected to obtain a preliminary subset of optimal features. In the second stage, Pearson correlation was used to discard highly correlated features. In these two stages, XGBoost classification algorithm was applied to obtain the most contributing features that, in turn, provide the best optimal subset. Then, in the final stage, we fed the obtained feature subset to a meta-heuristic algorithm, called whale optimization algorithm, in order to further reduce the feature set and to achieve higher accuracy. We evaluated the proposed feature selection framework on four publicly available disease datasets taken from the UCI machine learning repository, namely, arrhythmia, leukemia, DLBCL, and prostate cancer. Our obtained results confirm that the proposed method can perform better than many state-of-the-art methods and can detect important features as well. Background: The influenza virus and the novel beta coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) have similar transmission characteristics, and it is very difficult to distinguish them clinically. With the development of information technologies, novel opportunities have arisen for the application of intelligent software systems in disease diagnosis and patient triage. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 268 infants: 133 infants with a SARS-CoV-2 infection and 135 infants with an influenza virus infection. In total, 10 hematochemical variables were used to construct an automated machine learning model. Results: An accuracy range from 53.8% to 60.7% was obtained by applying support vector machine, random forest, k-nearest neighbors, logistic regression, and neural network models. Alternatively, an automated model convincingly outperformed other models with an accuracy of 98.4%. The proposed automated algorithm recommended a random tree model, a randomization-based ensemble method, as the most appropriate for the given dataset. Conclusions: The application of automated machine learning in clinical practice can contribute to more objective, accurate, and rapid diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza virus infections in children. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are vital in identifying patients at risk of serious illness by providing an early hazards risk. Myocardial infarction (MI) is a silent disease that has been harvested and is still threatening many lives. The aim of this work is to propose a stacking ensemble based on Convolutional Neural Network model (CNN). The proposed model consists of two primary levels, Level-1 and Level-2. In Level-1, the pre-trained CNN models (i.e., CNN-Model1, CNN-Model2, and CNN-Model3) produce the output probabilities and collect them in stacking for the training and testing sets. In Level-2, four meta-leaner classifiers (i.e., SVM, LR, RF, or KNN) are trained by stacking the output probabilities of the training set and are evaluated using the stacking of the output probabilities of the testing set to make the final prediction results. The proposed work was evaluated based on two ECG heartbeat signals datasets for MI: Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Beth Israel Hospital (MIT-BIH) and Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) datasets. The proposed model was compared with a diverse set of classical machine learning algorithms such as decision tree, K-nearest neighbor, and support vector machine, and the three base CNN classifiers of CNN-Model1, CNN-Model2, and CNN-Model3. The proposed model based on the RF meta-learner classifier obtained the highest scores, achieving remarkable results on both databases used. For the MIT-BIH dataset it achieved an accuracy of 99.8%, precision of 97%, recall of 96%, and F1-score of 94.4%, outperforming all other methods. while with PTB dataset achieved an accuracy of 99.7%, precision of 99%, recall of 99%, and F1-score of 99%, exceeding the other methods. A system's operational life cycle now includes an integrated health management and diagnostic strategy due to improvements in the current technology. It is evident that the life cycle may be used to identify abnormalities, analyze failures, and forecast future conditions based on current data. Data models can be trained using machine learning and statistical ideas, employing condition data and on-site feedback. Once data models are trained, the data-processing logic can be integrated into onboard controllers, allowing for real-time health evaluation and analysis. Interestingly, the oil and gas industries may encounter numerous obstacles and hurdles as a result of the integration, highlighting the need for creative solutions to the perplexing problem. The potential benefits in terms of challenges involving feature extraction and data classification, machine learning has received significant research attention recently. The application and utility in pump system health management should be investigated to explore the extend it can be used to increase overall system resilience or identify potential financial advantages for maintenance, repair, and overhaul activities. This is seen as an evolving research area, with a variety of application domains. This article present a critical analysis of machine learning's most current advances in the field of artificial intelligence-based system health management, specifically in terms of pump applications in the oil and gas industries. To further understand its potential, various algorithms and related theories are examined. Based on the examined studies, machine learning shows potential for prognostics and defect diagnosis. There are, few drawbacks that is seen to be preventing its widespread adoption which prompt for further improvement. The article discussed possible solutions to the identified drawbacks and future opportunities presented. This study further elaborates on the commonly available commercial machine learning (ML) tools used for pump fault prognostics and diagnostics with an emphasis on the type of data utilized. Findings from the literature review shows that the neural network (NN) is the most prevalent algorithm employed in studies, followed by the Bayesian network (BN), support vector machine (SVM), and hybrid models. While the need for selecting appropriate training algorithms is seen to be significant. Interestingly, no specific method or algorithm exists for a given problem instead the solution relies on the type of data and the algorithm's or method's aptitude for resolving the provided errors. Among the various research studies on pump fault diagnosis and prognosis, the most frequently discussed problem is a bearing fault, with a percentage of 46%, followed by cavitation. The studies rank seal damage as the third most prevalent flaw. Leakage and obstruction are the least studied defects in research. The main data types used in machine learning techniques for diagnosing pump faults are vibration and flow, which might not be sufficient to identify the condition of pumps and their characteristics. The various datasets have been derived from expert opinion, real-world observations, laboratory tests, and computer simulations. Continuous advancement in the health sector is essential to reduce costs and increase efficiency and quality of service. The widespread use of ultrasonography (USG) has made it possible to detect thyroid nodules with higher success rates. Some standard scoring systems have been developed to score thyroid nodules. Thyroid scoring systems are classification systems that determine the risk of cancer in thyroid nodules according to ultrasonographic characteristics and nodule size. Different scoring results for the same thyroid nodule may occur according to these different scoring systems, which can cause some unnecessary surgical interventions. In this study, some intelligent models are developed to assist thyroid scoring systems, with the aim to determine the correct surgical intervention and reduce operation costs by preventing unnecessary interventions and surgical procedures. The integration of current thyroid scoring systems (K-TIRADS, ACR-TIRADS, EU-TIRADS, ATA, and BTA) and machine learning methods provides radiologists and clinicians a decision-support mechanism in the evaluation of thyroid nodules. Correct diagnosis will help to reduce costs by helping prevent unnecessary procedures. The present dataset was retrospectively constructed using ultrasound images of thyroid nodules between 2014 and 2018. In determining the treatment process of thyroid nodules, Random Forest, Adaboost, J48 Decision Tree (J48 DT), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) models are used for increased prediction accuracy of thyroid scoring systems. The goal is to decrease redundant Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) biopsies and surgical interventions of suspicious thyroid nodules. As a result of the study, higher degrees of accuracy are achieved in the determination of correct or incorrect surgical interventions of thyroid nodules using the J48 DT algorithm with the EU-TIRADS scoring system, with an accuracy rate of 99.7853%, compared to other classifiers. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that impacts the neural, physiological, and behavioral systems of the brain, in which mild variations in the initial phases of the disease make precise diagnosis difficult. The general symptoms of this disease are slow movements known as 'bradykinesia'. The symptoms of this disease appear in middle age and the severity increases as one gets older. One of the earliest signs of PD is a speech disorder. This research proposed the effectiveness of using supervised classification algorithms, such as support vector machine (SVM), naïve Bayes, k-nearest neighbor (K-NN), and artificial neural network (ANN) with the subjective disease where the proposed diagnosis method consists of feature selection based on the filter method, the wrapper method, and classification processes. Since just a few clinical test features would be required for the diagnosis, a method such as this might reduce the time and expense associated with PD screening. The suggested strategy was compared to PD diagnostic techniques previously put forward and well-known classifiers. The experimental outcomes show that the accuracy of SVM is 87.17%, naïve Bayes is 74.11%, ANN is 96.7%, and KNN is 87.17%, and it is concluded that the ANN is the most accurate one with the highest accuracy. Neonatal jaundice is a common condition worldwide. Failure of timely diagnosis and treatment can lead to death or brain injury. Current diagnostic approaches include a painful and time-consuming invasive blood test and non-invasive tests using costly transcutaneous bilirubinometers. Since periodic monitoring is crucial, multiple efforts have been made to develop non-invasive diagnostic tools using a smartphone camera. However, existing works rely either on skin or eye images using statistical or traditional machine learning methods. In this paper, we adopt a deep transfer learning approach based on eye, skin, and fused images. We also trained well-known traditional machine learning models, including multi-layer perceptron (MLP), support vector machine (SVM), decision tree (DT), and random forest (RF), and compared their performance with that of the transfer learning model. We collected our dataset using a smartphone camera. Moreover, unlike most of the existing contributions, we report accuracy, precision, recall, f-score, and area under the curve (AUC) for all the experiments and analyzed their significance statistically. Our results indicate that the transfer learning model performed the best with skin images, while traditional models achieved the best performance with eyes and fused features. Heart disease, one of the main reasons behind the high mortality rate around the world, requires a sophisticated and expensive diagnosis process. In the recent past, much literature has demonstrated machine learning approaches as an opportunity to efficiently diagnose heart disease patients. However, challenges associated with datasets such as missing data, inconsistent data, and mixed data (containing inconsistent missing data both as numerical and categorical) are often obstacles in medical diagnosis. This inconsistency led to a higher probability of misprediction and a misled result. Data preprocessing steps like feature reduction, data conversion, and data scaling are employed to form a standard dataset—such measures play a crucial role in reducing inaccuracy in final prediction. This paper aims to evaluate eleven machine learning (ML) algorithms—Logistic Regression (LR), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Classification and Regression Trees (CART), Naive Bayes (NB), Support Vector Machine (SVM), XGBoost (XGB), Random Forest Classifier (RF), Gradient Boost (GB), AdaBoost (AB), Extra Tree Classifier (ET)—and six different data scaling methods—Normalization (NR), Standscale (SS), MinMax (MM), MaxAbs (MA), Robust Scaler (RS), and Quantile Transformer (QT) on a dataset comprising of information of patients with heart disease. The result shows that CART, along with RS or QT, outperforms all other ML algorithms with 100% accuracy, 100% precision, 99% recall, and 100% F1 score. COVID-19 has infected 223 countries and caused 2.8 million deaths worldwide (at the time of writing this article), and the death rate is increasing continuously. Early diagnosis of COVID patients is a critical challenge for medical practitioners, governments, organizations, and countries to overcome the rapid spread of the deadly virus in any geographical area. In this situation, the previous epidemic evidence on Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) techniques encouraged the researchers to play a significant role in detecting COVID-19. Similarly, the rising scope of ML/DL methodologies in the medical domain also advocates its significant role in COVID-19 detection. This systematic review presents ML and DL techniques practiced in this era to predict, diagnose, classify, and detect the coronavirus. In this study, the data was retrieved from three prevalent full-text archives, i.e., Science Direct, Web of Science, and PubMed, using the search code strategy on 16 March 2021. Using professional assessment, among 961 articles retrieved by an initial query, only 40 articles focusing on ML/DL-based COVID-19 detection schemes were selected. Findings have been presented as a country-wise distribution of publications, article frequency, various data collection, analyzed datasets, sample sizes, and applied ML/DL techniques. Precisely, this study reveals that ML/DL technique accuracy lay between 80% to 100% when detecting COVID-19. The RT-PCR-based model with Support Vector Machine (SVM) exhibited the lowest accuracy (80%), whereas the X-ray-based model achieved the highest accuracy (99.7%) using a deep convolutional neural network. However, current studies have shown that an anal swab test is super accurate to detect the virus. Moreover, this review addresses the limitations of COVID-19 detection along with the detailed discussion of the prevailing challenges and future research directions, which eventually highlight outstanding issues. The increasing availability of molecular data provided by next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques is allowing improvement in the possibilities of diagnosis and prognosis in renal cancer. Reliable and accurate predictors based on selected gene panels are urgently needed for better stratification of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients in order to define a personalized treatment plan. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are currently in development for this purpose. Here, we reviewed studies that developed predictors based on AI algorithms for diagnosis and prognosis in renal cancer and we compared them with non-AI-based predictors. Comparing study results, it emerges that the AI prediction performance is good and slightly better than non-AI-based ones. However, there have been only minor improvements in AI predictors in terms of accuracy and the area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) over the last decade and the number of genes used had little influence on these indices. Furthermore, we highlight that different studies having the same goal obtain similar performance despite the fact they use different discriminating genes. This is surprising because genes related to the diagnosis or prognosis are expected to be tumor-specific and independent of selection methods and algorithms. The performance of these predictors will be better with the improvement in the learning methods, as the number of cases increases and by using different types of input data (e.g., non-coding RNAs, proteomic and metabolic). Endothelial-Dysfunction (ED) screening is of primary importance to early diagnosis cardiovascular diseases. Recently, approaches to ED screening are focusing more and more on photoplethysmography (PPG)-signal analysis, which is performed in a threshold-sensitive way and may not be suitable for tackling the high variability of PPG signals. The goal of this work was to present an innovative machine-learning (ML) approach to ED screening that could tackle such variability. Two research hypotheses guided this work: (H1) ML can support ED screening by classifying PPG features; and (H2) classification performance can be improved when including also anthropometric features. To investigate H1 and H2, a new dataset was built from 59 subject. The dataset is balanced in terms of subjects with and without ED. Support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF) and k-nearest neighbors (KNN) classifiers were investigated for feature classification. With the leave-one-out evaluation protocol, the best classification results for H1 were obtained with SVM (accuracy = 71%, recall = 59%). When testing H2, the recall was further improved to 67%. Such results are a promising step for developing a novel and intelligent PPG device to assist clinicians in performing large scale and low cost ED screening. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
