This paper argues that the consideration of educational disadvantage should go beyond the micro-scale contextual level of individual students, and explore eventual connections with hybrid forms of disadvantage in the social field. The paper draws on the capability approach and the concept of dwelling to introduce dwelling in time as functioning. This refers to students' abilities to position themselves in an engaging and meaningful relationship within time, and depends on students first achieving the previous functioning of dwelling. Research results from 222 14–15 year-old vocational education students from Italy, France and Greece using the Future Time Perspective Scale for Adolescents and Young Adults (FTPS-AYA), revealed four main findings: a measurement error in four factors of the scale, an almost systematic lack of correlation of the future-planning factor with the other factors, a significant percentage of students who do not have a clear position on the future and an invisible correlation between the future-positive and future-negative factors and students' opportunities to choose their specialisations. The paper argues that these four findings should not be seen in isolation and concludes that widening the spectrum of the origins of educational disadvantage facilitates both more effective education policy making and localising conversion factors that can boost students' resilience. In this paper, we examine whether the size effect is present in four European markets viz. France, Germany, Spain and Italy. We also investigate whether the size effect can be explained through the sources as available in the literature. We employ prominent asset pricing models to ascertain if size anomaly in our sample countries passes the risk story. We find single-factor model i.e.capital asset pricing model to be still relevant in explaining size anomaly for Spain and Italy. We find FF3 factor model to be a suitable model to be explain for alphas in Germany, while we find that none of the asset pricing model is able to fully explain the size effect for France. Hence, we conclude that though size anomaly does not provide any opportunities to portfolio managers for making extra normal returns for their investors in three of the four sample countries. France, however, provides an opportunity to portfolio managers for exploiting size anomaly. Our findings have implications for portfolio managers, academia as well as regulators. Quality assurance in higher education is one of the cornerstones of the Bologna agenda and the Lisbon strategy, which aims at establishing the world's most competitive knowledge economy. Extensive literature up to now has addressed quality assurance as a regulatory and policy mechanism and has presented quality assurance and market forces as antagonistic. However, what policymakers in the field fail to see is that the 'official' quality assurance processes also have implications in terms of competition. Indeed, higher education institutions are using the results of these, in principle aseptic, non-market-related evaluation processes, as a way to achieve competitive advantage. This paper analyses the case of higher education institutions in engineering in France. The institutional websites of 163 higher education institutions have been analysed through code-based content analysis techniques and Multiple Correspondence Analysis. This study shows that the analysis of institutional websites can be used as a tool to gauge the importance of the different dimensions of quality assurance for higher education institutions in a given national system. Furthermore, a clear association has been found between the ranking position of an institution and its communication behaviour. The results have been interpreted in the light of Neoinstitutional Theory and Porter's generic competitive strategies. Consider the model Y = X + ε with X = τ + Z , where τ is an unknown constant (the boundary of X), Z is a random variable defined on R + , ε is a symmetric error, and ε and Z are independent. Based on an iid sample of Y, we aim at identifying and estimating the boundary τ when the law of ε is unknown (apart from symmetry) and in particular its variance is unknown. We propose an estimation procedure based on a minimal distance approach and by making use of Laguerre polynomials. Asymptotic results as well as finite sample simulations are shown. The paper also proposes an extension to stochastic frontier analysis, where the model is conditional to observed variables. The model becomes Y = τ (w 1 , w 2) + Z + ε , where Y is a cost, w1 are the observed outputs and w2 represents the observed values of other conditioning variables, so Z is the cost inefficiency. Some simulations illustrate again how the approach works in finite samples, and the proposed procedure is illustrated with data coming from post offices in France. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between board gender diversity and firm performance under the enabling and voluntary institutional settings in France. We use a Quantile difference-in-differences and dose-response function estimations. The findings show that the comply-or-explain recommendation by the French code is likely to decrease performance for poorly performing firms. However, firm performance increases after the enabling date in high-performing firms. The results of the dose-response functions show that accounting performance reaches a threshold of 40% of women on boards, which coincides with the French law requirements in 2017. Drone technology opens the door to major changes and opportunities in our society. But this technology, like many others, needs to be administered and regulated to prevent potential harm to the public. Therefore, national and local governments around the world established regulations for operating drones, which bans drone use from specific locations or limits their operation to qualified drone pilots only. This study reviews the types of restrictions on drone use that are specified in federal drone regulations for the US, the UK, and France, and in state regulations for the US. The study also maps restricted areas and assesses compliance with these regulations by analyzing the spatial contribution patterns to three crowd-sourced drone portals, namely SkyPixel, Flickr, and DroneSpot, relative to restricted areas. The analysis is performed both at the national level and at the state/regional level within each of the three countries, where statistical tests are conducted to compare compliance rates between the three drone portals. This study provides new insight into drone users' awareness of and compliance with drone regulations. This can help governments to tailor information campaigns for increased awareness of drone regulations among drone users and to determine where increased control and enforcement of drone regulations is necessary. Elite athletes are continually subjected to a range of constraints specific to high performance, and these can have a negative impact on their health. Although many studies have explored the individual factors related to risky behaviours and disorders in elite sport contexts, few have focused on health promotion. Consequently, the interpersonal, institutional, and policy factors of the healthrelated behaviours of elite athletes are still poorly explored. Based on the socioecological model, this study aimed to identify the factors involved in the health-related lifestyle of elite athletes. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 45 participants: athletes (N = 32), their coaches (N = 6) and the managers of elite sport centres (N = 7). Both deductive and inductive thematic analyses were performed. Our results highlight the views of the actors. Regarding intrapersonal factors, resilience qualities and health literacy appeared as key factors in influencing the health-related lifestyle of elite athletes. At the interpersonal level, parents and coaches emerged as the main sources of educational support. Regarding institutional factors, the health policies of the elite sport centres were key factors in supporting the athletes' healthy lifestyle. I present a comparative historical study of the economic growth in the four mandate territories of Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Trans-Jordan. In all four areas, the ruling western powers, Britain and France, attempted to introduce inclusive economic institutions with a strong emphasis on private property. These institutions advanced economic growth in all four regions, but there were differences in their growth rates. For example, Palestine had the best growth, even though the British were more successful in instituting inclusive institutions in Trans-Jordan. In Palestine, there was also a huge increase in the proximate causes of growth that did not happen in Trans-Jordan. The paper suggests a refined formulation of the relationship between inclusive institutions, proximate causes of growth, and economic growth. Inclusive institutions will generate economic growth, but at a slower pace. If a country is able to enhance its proximate causes of growth, then the joint effect of the proximate causes of growth and inclusive institutions will lead to much quicker growth. Storm Xynthia was responsible for the death of 41 people by drowning after the flooding by the sea of low-lying areas along French Atlantic coast in February 2010. This toll was partly explained by inadequacy of houses to flood hazard: 78% of the deaths occur in single-storey constructions. In this paper, we propose a map linking architectural typology of constructions with potential water depth in case of coastal flood event. The goal is to identify residential houses which present a high level of vulnerability for people to a potential coastal flood event. This work is presented on Noirmoutier Island which was few impacted by Storm Xynthia. However, it presents some common points with the most hit territories during the storm: 70% of the territory is under Xynthia level; 65% of the houses located in this low-lying area are single-storey constructions This map shows us different vulnerability between the four towns of the island. During the last 30 years, there have been several major reforms of teacher education in France. The role of universities in teacher education, the acquisition of professional competencies, as well as the articulation between academic courses and practice in schools, have all been questioned. These reforms have led to lots of debates and controversy, particularly about the role of universities and schools and about the balance between knowledge and pedagogy. In this paper, I first describe the specificities of the French system in recruiting and training teachers, and I then present the major developments in teacher education in France in the last 30 years, along with the main questions addressed. After a long period of time during which primary teachers were trained in écoles normales and secondary teachers only received subject preparation, the creation of IUFMs (Instituts Universitaires de Formation des Maîtres -- university institutes for teacher training) as independent institutions in 1990 tried to resolve the biggest questions of teacher education. The history of IUFMs has led to successes and failures that I will analyse. In order to improve the role of universities in teacher education and give future teachers better professional preparation through 'sandwich training', in 2013 the government created the new ESPEs (Ecoles Supérieures du Professorat et de l'Education higher schools for teaching and education professions). This paper provides an empirical analysis on the question whether equalization payments across regions and transfers from the central government stimulate regional growth or impede it. Using a panel of 22 French regions from 2002 to 2008, we find that regional economic growth is positively affected by the fiscal equalization system. We employ two indicators of this system: the transfer volume measure (approximated by either tax revenues in other regions or transfers to regions) and the marginal retention rate. Our main finding is that the transfer volume effect is positive for growth in both donor and recipient regions. Hence, we do not find any evidence that regional governments in France allocate transfers inefficiently. This finding contradicts previous empirical studies for federal countries that tend to find adverse incentive effects of fiscal equalization on regional governments and growth. A major explanation behind this result could be that the volume of the transfers in France may appear to be relatively moderate, i.e. small enough to avoid adverse effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many sources of error in hydroclimatic data can affect hydrological modelling, yet the impact of streamflow data quality is poorly quantified. This work aims to investigate whether inconsistencies found in streamflow time series commonly available for hydrological studies (typically in national streamflow archives) have an impact on the efficiency and the parameter estimates of rainfall–runoff models. Hydroclimatic data were gathered at the hourly time step over the period 1998–2018 for a set of 30 catchments in France. Hydrological modelling was carried out with the lumped conceptual GR5H (standing for modèle du Génie Rural à 5 paramètres Horaire, i.e. Hourly 5-parameter rural engineering model) model. A typology of "realistic" suspicious streamflow was established to set up several error models in order to corrupt the data. Our results suggest that common suspicious streamflow data do not have a strong impact on model efficiency and parameter estimates overall, but may be an important source of instability and lack of robustness when working on a single catchment. A national flood mark database spanning several centuries contains valuable information to characterize ancient flood events. However, the network of flood mark sites is distinct from the network of hydrometric stations, making this information difficult to use. This work describes a probabilistic model jointly describing flood marks at sites and flood peaks at stations. The model is based on the estimation of hidden climate indices driving both flood marks and peaks: this allows transferring information between the two variables despite them being measured on distinct networks. The model is applied to about 300 flood mark sites (1705–2015) and 200 stations (1904–2015) in France. Results demonstrate that flood marks allow estimating the time-varying probability of exceeding some high discharge threshold at stations during the whole period 1705–2015, which largely predates the existence of stations. Recent regulatory evolutions gave the opportunity to professionals and academics from the health, urban planning and environment sectors – within a working group – to conduct in-depth research at a national level on health challenges in the field of EIA procedure and urban planning. This work resulted in the publication of a guide aimed at all actors involved in the urban planning decision process, which has now become a national reference document. Among the key findings of this project, three main concrete outputs caught our attention: a reference framework for Healthy Urban Planning (HUP); an all-encompassing tool for analysing urban planning projects ‘with a health lens’; an operational tool aimed at French regional health agencies (ARS) to help them formulate their health statements within the framework of the EIA regulatory procedure applied to urban development projects. This paper reviews the process of co-constructing the guide with special attention paid to the ARS tool, present the key findings and outputs and discuss the potential of the EIA process in promoting HUP in the current French context. Few studies have focused on the presence of families in the hospital in the context of an epidemic. The present study aims to contribute to filling this gap by answering the following question: How did professionals, patients and their families cope with more or less drastic restrictions to family visits and presence during the COVID-19 pandemic in a French and a Malian hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic? Data were collected during the first two waves of the pandemic through 111 semi-structured interviews (France = 55, Mali = 56). Most of the interviews were conducted with staff (n = 103), but also with families in the case of Mali (n = 8). The investigators also conducted 150 days of field observations, 44 in France and 106 in Mali. Thematic analysis was applied using an inductive approach. Interviews were content analyzed to identify passages in the interviews that were relevant to these different themes. The study highlighted the difficulty for the medical-clinical system to provide appropriate responses to the many emotional needs of patients in a pandemic context. Families in France benefited from a support service to reduce stress, while in Mali, no initiative was taken in this sense. In both countries, families often used the telephone as an alternative means of communicating with relatives. The results showed that in the two contexts, the presence and involvement of the families contributed to a better response to the patients' psycho-affective demands and thus promoted resilience in this field. Conflicts over dam removal have attracted substantial scholarly attention over the past years, although this research has generally focused on evaluating local-scale conflicts. Far less is known about the role of institutional frameworks in shaping conflicts at regional and national scales. We complement and extend this discussion by highlighting the politics of scale in dam removal conflicts, specifically by a comparison of cases in northwest of France and New England (United States) where the pace of dam removals has accelerated in recent years. We interpret these cases using a framework of scalar politics articulated with actor-network theory. Based on detailed qualitative data, we contrast the case of France, where local conflicts over dam removal have been debated at the national scale, with the debates about dam removal in New England, which have consistently remained almost entirely at local scales. We point out three elements to analyze this contrast: the strategic scale of deployment by opponents to further their interest, the role of dams as brokering devices to foster the horizontal network of actors and things prior to upscaling, and the support on existing scalar arrangements to upscale conflicts. Today, large-scale modelling tools are needed for anticipating the expected impacts of climate change on hydrosystems and for planning mitigation measures. We developed a spatially-distributed model for the MARTHE (Modélisation d'Aquifères avec un maillage Rectangulaire, Transport et HydrodynamiquE; Modelling Aquifers with Rectangular cells, Transport and Hydrodynamics) hydrogeological modelling computer code as a preliminary tool for France, and carried out a first evaluation over a 10-year period, comparing observed and modelled time series of groundwater levels and river flows. Then, prospective hydrological simulations were undertaken using five regionalized climate simulations. The evaluation results show varying performance depending upon the regions and variables considered, but they provide encouraging perspectives. Future hydrological projections anticipate increased recharge by +15% on average over France, accompanied by increases in wetter/drier groundwater extreme events in the north/south by the 2070–2099 period compared to the 1976–2005 reference period. Based on these results, the MARTHE model can be considered a promising template for the construction of a nation-wide hydrological model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We explored patient satisfaction with baricitinib, an oral Janus kinase inhibitor, in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) treated in routine clinical practice. Adults with moderate-to-severe AD treated with baricitinib in clinical practice for ≥4 weeks in France, Germany, and the UK completed a one-time online survey under market research methodologies. Treatment satisfaction was assessed using a Likert scale and abbreviated Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication (TSQM-9). Patients reported demographic, disease, and treatment information. Data were analyzed descriptively. The survey was completed by 170 patients with a mean age of 39.3 years (SD = 13.5), 59% (n = 101) were female. At baricitinib initiation, 79% rated their AD as "Severe", yet 28% reported body surface area (BSA) involvement ≥10%. Most were "Satisfied" or "Very satisfied" (76%/18%) with baricitinib, with high rates reported for controlling itch (36%/56%). Itch improvements were noted by 97% of patients. Some tapered/stopped (50%/32%) topical corticosteroid use, aligned with reported improvements on the patient global assessment and BSA. Mean TSQM-9 convenience score was 78.0 (SD = 14.0). Satisfaction with itch control was particularly high, reflected in rates of improvement in itch since starting baricitinib. On the TSQM-9, the convenience score was the highest. Many patients tapered/stopped concomitant topicals, indicating baricitinib's effect in controlling AD symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Proper inventory management is crucial for art galleries. Yet, despite its importance, inventory management has been overlooked in the literature. We distinguish four main strategies used by art dealers to manage their inventory and use this classification to set the inventory strategy of Goupil, Boussod & Valadon, a major art gallery active in France at the end of the 19th century, into perspective. Goupil's books cover the sale of more than 25,000 artworks between 1860 and 1914. Rapidity to sell was a key element in Goupil's strategy. Out of the sold artworks, almost 75% were sold within a year. Goupil required a slightly higher mark-up for artists from which he held a large inventory. Mark-up for artists in residence and the likelihood to sell their artworks at a loss were lower, signaling a preoccupation for their long-term market. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A consolidated geomorphology-based approach for discharge prediction in ungauged basins (PUB) through deconvolution of discharge signals from gauged donor catchments, their transposition and their convolution towards target outlets, has been made available online to end users through a Web Processing Service (WPS) for the synoptic peninsular region of Brittany, France. In the spirit of hydrological services, the SIMFEN WPS allows anyone to execute the hydrological modelling package transfR online through: (1) Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) interoperability standards; (2) collection and use of public hydrometric data; (3) connection to the pre-existing MNTSurf WPS for geomorphometric analysis; (4) visualization using a collaboratively developed Mviewer; and (5) innovative WPS workflows. The ability to model discharge series at any ungauged outlet of the synoptic region is offered to specialists of other disciplines, non-modeller water practitioners and interested citizens to support interdisciplinarity, water monitoring and management, and related science-society-policy debates and actions. Why does Administration Industrielle et Générale have a major status in the history of management thought? We argue that the rational reason for the enthusiasm for Fayol's theory disguises the irrational and unconscious fears in societies for which the cool rationality of Fayol's work offered a soothing balm. We discuss this in two different but relatively similar post-war settings—France in the 1920s, which saw the first major upsurge of interest in Fayol's work, and the mid-twentieth century USA, where his work was rediscovered and attained canonical status. The reception to his work in the aftermaths of the two world wars prove particularly important in understanding how historico/politico/emotional affect influences the reception to a body of work. We suggest it is not the ideas themselves that were of prime importance, but how those ideas resonated with the historical, political and emotional context in which they were debated and taken up. Guinea fowl fulminating enteritis has been reported in France since the 1970s. In 2014, a coronavirus was identified and appeared as a possible viral pathogen involved in the disease. In the present study, intestinal content from a guinea fowl involved in a new case of the disease in 2017 was analysed by deep sequencing, revealing the presence of a guinea fowl coronavirus (GfCoV) and a picornavirus (GfPic). Serial passage assays into the intra-amniotic cavity of 13-day-old specific pathogen-free chicken eggs and 20-day-old conventional guinea fowl eggs were attempted. In chicken eggs, isolation assays failed, but in guinea fowl eggs, both viruses were successfully obtained. Furthermore, two GfCoV and two GfPic isolates were obtained from the same bird but from different sections of its intestines. This shows that using eggs of the same species, in which the virus has been detected, can be the key for successful isolation. The consensus sequence of the full-length genomes of both GfCoV isolates was highly similar, and correlated to those previously described in terms of genome organization, ORF length and phylogenetic clustering. According to full-length genome analysis and the structure of the Internal Ribosome Entry Site, both GfPic isolates belong to the Anativirus genus and specifically the species Anativirus B. The availability of the first isolates of GfCoV and GfPic will now provide a means of assessing their pathogenicity in guinea fowl in controlled experimental conditions and to assess whether they are primary viral pathogens of the disease "guinea fowl fulminating enteritis". In two striking books released in 2019, Ariella Aïsha Azoulay and Georges Didi-Huberman explicitly draw a connection between their respective theoretical approaches to images and their family histories. In Potential History: Unlearning Imperialism, Azoulay recounts the suppression of the existence of her Algerian-Jewish grandmother Aïsha by her father, who wanted to hide his Arabic-Algerian origins. Azoulay consequently develops a critical view on the history of photography and its role in the imperialist destruction of entire lifeworlds. In Pour Commencer Encore, Didi-Huberman recounts the story of his mother, who had to hide her Jewishness to survive the Nazi occupation of France, and of his father, who migrated to France as a Jewish Tunisian. In both cases, their relatives' cultural identity had to remain invisible for various reasons in the countries in which their children grew up. Azoulay and Didi-Huberman present their approaches to images as influenced by the injustices experienced by these relatives and their commitment to them even goes as far as both them of changing their author names: Azoulay added "Aïsha" to her name and Didi-Huberman adopted his paternal ("Didi") and maternal ("Huberman") family name. However, this commitment led them to develop vastly different approaches to images and photographs. Whereas Azoulay emphasizes the role of photography in the imperialist destruction of worlds, remaining cautious of even reproducing certain photographs in her book, Didi-Huberman argues that worlds are never completely lost and that traces of these worlds always reappear by means of images. Azoulay aligns photography with imperialism and colonialism, while Didi-Huberman associates photography with migration. In their desire to do justice to the sufferings of their relatives, both influential theorists of images develop strongly diverging views on the politics of photographs and how they can reveal traces of lost worlds. Hypersensitivity reactions are an important aspect of perioperative care and are a crucial interdisciplinary issue in anaesthesiological practice, as well as allergological and laboratory diagnostics. This phenomenon was observed as early as the 1980s and 1990s in Western European countries, and knowledge on this subject has grown significantly over time. Although hypersensitivity reactions are not frequent events (the incidence of perioperative hypersensitivity reactions ranges from 1:386 to 1:13 000 procedures, with higher frequency − 1 per 6500 general anaesthesias with neuromuscular blocking agents administrations), their courses are unfortunately serious and life-threatening. It should also be noted that there is no information regarding the occurrence of perioperative hypersensitivity reactions in many countries. Hence, global assessment of the problem is underestimated. The primary source of actual knowledge comes from epidemiological studies, which indicate an increasing frequency of hypersensitivity reaction occurrence and changes in aetiological factors. The first report from France (1984 to 1989) described two main causes – neuromuscular blocking agents and hypnotic agents. The following years confirmed an increase in perioperative hypersensitivity reactions associated with latex and antibiotics. The most recent data from the National Audit Project 6 indicated increased participation of antibiotics, chlorhexidine, and contrast agents. The results of epidemiological analyses are the basis of medical management guidelines and practice modification. Thanks to the activity of many organisations monitoring the intensity and nature of perioperative hypersensitivity reactions, guidelines for diagnostics and management have been developed. This article presents the results of numerous studies, including the first and the most recent, from various geographical regions. The clinical significance, pathogenesis mechanisms are also discussed. This publication also presents important directions for further scientific and epidemiological research on perioperative hypersensitivity reactions. The incidence of perioperative hypersensitivity reactions ranges from 1:386 to 1:13 000 procedures, with higher frequency – 1 per 6500 general anaesthesias with neuromuscular blocking agents administrations. Reactions may occur during the first episode of anaesthesia, most frequently in the induction of general anaesthesia, and much less frequently during postoperative follow-up. The first reports of perioperative hypersensitivity reaction come from the 1990s, and knowledge on this subject has grown significantly over time. In many countries, multidisciplinary teams and organisations have been established to identify, monitor the occurrence of this phenomenon, and have set the directions of medical activities and have changed the rules and recommendations. There is no information about the occurrence of perioperative hypersensitivity reactions in many countries, and global assessment of the problem is underestimated. Additionally, there is a great need to develop a system to monitor their occurrence in other countries. The long-term epidemiologic studies have demonstrated variability in pharmacologic triggers. We analyze positional concerns in the unethical domain. We introduce an original distinction between "selective" positionality—where individuals prefer behaving unethically but to a lesser extent than peers—and "ego" positionality—where they prefer behaving unethically but to a higher extent than peers, regardless of the absolute level. We also report the results of an exploratory survey in Algeria that exploits the counterintuitive insight that people are better at predicting others' behaviors than their own behaviors. We increase the finding's generalizability by conducting the same survey among a similar sample in France. Our findings are twofold: first, the majority of participants attributes to others preferences for ethical (i.e., where everyone is honest) and unethical egalitarian (where all are similarly dishonest) situations. When an alien species is introduced in a new area, the new population may be genetically and phenotypically different from the parent population because of the population bottleneck, increased inbreeding rate and adaptation to the new environment. In this study we investigated the variation in shape and size of the mandible among and within three populations of the invasive Pallas's squirrel introduced in Italy, Belgium and France. Significant differences in both size and shape of the mandible were found among all population pairs, with France being the most distinct. French squirrels showed a larger and slenderer mandible with a broad angular process, a restricted condyle, and a backward-oriented coronoid process. The Italian and the Belgian population also differed significantly but to a lesser extent, the Italian squirrels having a lower coronoid process, a broader angular apophysis, and a restricted condyle. Size explained 15% of the total shape variation, but the slope of allometric trajectories did not reveal any significant difference among populations. A significantly high fluctuating and directional asymmetries were found respectively in the French and the Italian squirrels. The multi-bi aid from donor governments has been increasing due to its unique attributes. It allows the donors to control their aid spending and potentially influence the multilateral activities. Of the current members of the Development Assistance Committee, this study focuses on Korea and its multi-bi contribution to the World Food Programme (WFP). The contribution portfolio of Korea is analyzed and compared with that of France. The two countries are comparable for their similar size of the total contribution to WFP during the study period. This analysis observes differences in Korean and French approaches to their WFP multi-bi and the results indicate Korea spread its multi-bi across various aid types, sectors and regions through a multi-agency implementing channel. Korea showed little preferential aid towards its bilateral priority countries with its WFP multi-bi. On the other hand, France focused on a specific aid type, sector, and region through a unified implementing channel. France indicated its preference towards its bilateral priority countries with its WFP multi-bi. Given the current contribution size, Korea can be more efficient with its WFP multi-bi by prioritizing aid types, sectors and regions and unifying its implementing channel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A discrete-time deterministic epidemic model is proposed to better understand the contagious dynamics and the behaviour observed in the incidence of real infectious diseases. For this purpose, we analyse a SIRS model both in a random-mixing approach and in a small-world network formulation. The models include the basic parameters that characterize an epidemic: infection and recovery times, as well as mechanisms of contagion. Depending on the parameters, the random-mixing model has different types of behaviour of an epidemic: pathogen extinction; endemic infection; sustained oscillations and dynamic extinction. Spatial effects are included in our network-based approach, where each individual of a population is represented by a node of a small-world network. Our network-based approach includes rewiring connections to account for time-varying network structure, a consequence of the natural response to the emergence of an epidemic (e.g. avoiding contacts with infected individuals). Random and adaptive rewiring conditions are analysed and numerical simulation are made. A comparison of model predictions with the actual effects of COVID-19 infection on population that occurred in Italy and France is produced. As climate changes, perennial headwater streams could become intermittent and intermittent rivers could dry more often due to more severe droughts. A modelling framework supported by field observations was applied to assess the probability of drying in headwaters at the regional scale (PD) under climate change. Empirical relationships between severity of low flows and observed proportions of no-flow states have been calibrated for 22 hydro-ecoregions under present conditions. These relationships were applied using daily discharge data on a large set of gauging stations simulated by the Modèle du Génie Rural à 6 paramètres Journalier (GR6J) hydrological model under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) RCP2.6 and RCP8.5 emission scenarios. The results suggest a more contrasting spatial pattern in the future than under current conditions. Noteworthy changes include increases in drying extent and duration, particularly in regions with historically high probabilities of drying and changes in seasonality in Alpine regions. Investing in the Second-Industrial-Revolution (2IR) firms at the beginning of the 20th century exposed investors to strong information asymmetries due to the novelty of these industries and the lack of legal rules on transparency and public accounting. We analysed the firms listed in Paris at the start of the 2IR. Despite the strong informational asymmetries, the Paris financial markets did provide high valuation to firms involved in emerging activities as revealed by higher Tobin's Q. To understand the perceptions and attitudes of general practitioners (GPs) regarding children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Phenomenological qualitative study. Three focus groups, clinical settings. French GPs. 22 GPs took part in the study divided among three focus groups. They were volunteers to participate. Data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using a grounded theory data analysis, completed with a semiopragmatic analysis. Representing autism as a strange disorder in the doctor–patient relationship, GPs perceive a loss of sensory contact with the child with ASD that prevents the usual professional relationship between doctor and patient. They disengage themselves from monitoring the subject, concentrating on supporting the family. According to them, their role was to refer the patient to a specialist in the case of clinical intuition, but they have several reasons to give themselves time, all the more so because once the diagnosis is made, they lose sight of the patient and their place in the care pathway. GPs expressed the need to acquire skills and strategies to communicate with the autistic child to recover their role and values. GPs are disconcerted by the idea of communicating with children with ASD, as it takes them out of their usual professional benchmarks. They need communication tools that enable them to regain their role and relational value of the patient-centred approach. Over the past few decades, several naturalization methods have been developed for removing anthropogenic influences from streamflow time series, to the point that naturalized flows are often considered true natural flows in many studies. However, such trust in a particular naturalization method does not expose the assumptions underlying the method, nor does it quantifies the associated uncertainty. This review provides an overview of streamflow naturalization approaches. The terminology associated with naturalization is discussed, and a classification of naturalization methods according to their data requirements and main assumptions is proposed. A large set of studies developing or applying naturalization methods are reviewed, and the main challenges associated with the methods applied are assessed. To give a more concrete example, a focus is made on studies conducted in France over the last decade, which applied naturalization methods to estimate water extraction limits in rivers. The general purpose of this study was to validate the French Psychological Capital Questionnaire (F-PCQ-24) in a French Air Force sample (N = 3,665). One specific aim was to verify what the best measurement model is for PsyCap, notably by using Bifactor Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (B-ESEM). Another specific aim was to examine the measurement invariance of the best fitting model for the F-PCQ-24 across gender, rank and tenure. Results supported the superiority of the B-ESEM model of PsyCap with the hope dimension divided into its two components (will-power and way-power). Moreover, multi-group confirmatory factor analyses indicated the measurement invariance of F-PCQ-24 for gender and tenure, while there was a small problem with measurement invariance for rank. Overall, these findings confirm that the F-PCQ-24 is a stable measure of PsyCap and support previous theoretical considerations that PsyCap is a core construct. Movements of livestock across the Member States is monitored using the Trade Control and Expert System (TRACES), a web-based veterinarian certification tool. This study aimed to evaluate the criticalities of this tracing system and the most frequent non-conformities in their compilation. TRACES of cattle (n = 320) departed from France and arriving or transiting across Puglia (Italy) in 2019 (n = 199) and 2020 (n = 121) were analysed. The distribution arriving in Italy and Greece did not vary between the 2 years. The majority of the bovine (53.4%) were medium-sized cattle transported for fattening with a median body weight of 410 kg. However, almost half of the TRACES did not report correctly the total expected loaded weight or the available space, so for them, it was impossible to calculate and double-check whether the minimal space allowance was respected. Long journeys must include a resting stop after the first 14 h, however, 20.9% of the examined and declared stops did not comply with it. Finally, comparing the expected declared journey duration with a calculated one (dividing travel distance by an average speed of 70 km/h, adding 1 h for loading and unloading, and 1 h or 24 h for resting stops), we found that only 30.6% of the journey durations were congruent. The irregularities resulted associated with consignors and transporters (p <.05). Overall, the proportion of mistakes and non-compliance suggest that there is a need to improve the current practice to enhance animal welfare during transportation. Although the fundamental trilemma of open-economy macroeconomics has been a popular framework for analyzing the effects of various policy combinations, it ignores how policy regimes change. Drawing from Post-Keynesian Institutionalist theory, this article considers this process in democracies as a type of technological change in which progress may be limited by insufficient knowledge and actions by vested interests. A case study of interwar France shows that these barriers often delay or weaken stabilization programs, which increase both political and economic uncertainty that further lowers aggregate demand and inhibits the attainment of macroeconomic equilibria. Although we should not generalize these observations, they suggest that understanding and addressing cultural and institutional factors may be necessary for successful countercyclical policymaking. The battlefield of Verdun has seen some of the heaviest shelling in the history of mankind. This site as well as clean-up facilities in Germany may constitute contamination hot-spots and point-sources with leaking to groundwater. This study collected existing toxicological and ecotoxicological data on mustard gas degradation products, together with physical – chemical properties of listed compounds. It also provides quantities of these products measured in the groundwater of France, Germany and the pore water of the Baltic Sea. We indicate a deficiency of information on the toxicity of 1-oxa-4,5-dithiepane and 1,2,5 – trithiepane. In the groundwater of the German city of Munster 1-oxa-4,5-dithiepane was measured up to 250 µg/L, thus exceeding safe levels. Ecotoxicological studies classify this compound as toxic to aquatic organisms. 1,2,5-trithiepane is not a persistent compound. It was measured, however, in the groundwater at 1 µg/L level. This suggests that it could be formed from an active source of mustard gas. Considering the lack of toxicological data and the uncertainty about the amount of munition deposits, we suggest that research into the toxicity and exposure of, 1-oxa-4,5-dithiepane and 1,2,5 – trithiepane is needed for sites of concern. Event-based models are often used for flood prediction because they require fewer data than more complex models and account for a small number of parameters. We present the performance of such a model in simulating Mediterranean floods, with a focus on the initialization and on the impact of the rainfall uncertainties on the calibration of the model. The distributed event-based parsimonious Soil Conservation Service Lag-and-Route (SCS-LR) model was applied in the Real Collobrier catchment, France, which has a very high density of raingauges. The initial condition of the model was highly correlated with predictors, such as baseflow or soil water content. A reduction in the raingauge density can markedly change the calibration of the model. As the density of raingauges is generally low in most catchments, the uncertainties associated with rainfall measurement are thus expected either to mask the actual accuracy of the model, or to alter the model parameters. In the last decade, the study of media slant attracted a great deal of attention in economics. However, the research so far focused on political bias and its methodology relied on a purely quantitative analysis measured by the frequency of phrases. This article brings attention to the economic news and combines a quantitative with a qualitative analysis by reading the news reports/articles and deriving from this reading the analytical categories used for statistical calculations. This article deals with economic bias in general: how do the media view the economy? Do they buttress their arguments and reasoning by relying on scientific concepts or research? Do they take stances on specific issues? Who is qualified as "economist" in the media? are among the issues raised by this article. A method to build synthetic hydrographs is introduced, based on 1300 gauging stations in France and Switzerland, covering a wide range of size and climatology. For each station, an average of two floods per year are selected by a peak-over-threshold method, providing about 69 000 hydrographs. For a given catchment, some "donor stations" are selected with criteria of proximity in space, size and runoff production. These donors provide hundreds of hydrographs which can complement the ones recorded locally, or replace them if no hydrograph is available. With this subset of hydrographs, one can estimate the catchment's average peak-to-volume ratio of floods, and build the corresponding median hydrograph. Another application is, for a given daily discharge sequence (being observed or simulated), to generate a relevant synthetic hydrograph by combining appropriate hydrographs of the subset. In the 1980s, the French reformist union CFDT and insurance company Axa tested the union voucher. This was a novel solution for the union branch inside the company to address financial difficulties, broaden its membership base and generate new resources. The union voucher is a tool that provides unions with company funding: the company distributes vouchers to employees on an annual basis; employees then allocate the voucher (or not) to the union branch of their choice. The voucher system thus combines company financing and individual employee choice. Axa adopted the system in the early 1990s. Axa's decision can ultimately be explained by its external growth strategy and because it needed to preserve a favourable climate during a period of intense restructuring. The first aim of this study conducted in France was to examine consumer habits concerning beef consumption, as well as any reasons, which may explain the relative decline in interest in beef consumption. Two surveys were conducted based on a sample of 625 beef consumers to analyse the frequency of their meat consumption and its evolution. The survey also aimed to explore consumers' understanding of the new labelling system, which was introduced in France in 2015 to indicate the eating quality potential of cuts with stars. Half of the respondents have reduced their beef consumption. Whereas inconsistency in eating quality is one reason among others which contribute to explain this decline, results showed that 70% of the respondents have not seen yet the new labels on beef. Nevertheless, this system represents a major progress for the French beef sector and should be developed further. Indeed, French consumers would be interested in a meat grading system based on tenderness as the one in Australia. Such a system could reduce the decline in beef consumption and even reverse this negative trend. The decline in meat consumption may be explained by the high price of beef, and concerns about health, environment, eating quality and animal welfare. A large proportion of the respondents (72%) is not aware of the new labelling system for beef in supermarket self-service aisles. Further developing this new system to a grading scheme similar to the 'Meat Standards Australia' would be judicious. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditionally, risk management has been focused on the control of hazards. However, this field of research is now more aimed at reducing vulnerability. Methodology for gaining accurate knowledge of territorial vulnerability is proposed here. It is available for all types of hazard and applicable to any territory. It is based on a census of elements at risk and uses expert weighting to define vulnerability, relying on semi-structured interviews with local stakeholders. Finally, spatial statistics are used to highlight key areas of a town with clusters of higher vulnerability. This method is applied in this article to Greater Lyon urban area, in France. From the HISTRHONE database we extracted 1483 hydro-meteorological events from AD 1300 to 2000 that occurred in the Lower Rhône Valley, France. Daily heights of the Rhône River at Beaucaire and Arles are also available, from 1816 and 1829, respectively. A total of 517 floods were divided into three categories and a synthetic frequency severity index (FSI) was computed. Running averages of 11 and 31 years show a succession of poor and rich flood fluctuations. Extreme floods tripled in the second half of the period (1650–2000). Singular spectrum analysis isolates a dominant irregular component (main positive anomalies in 1450–1580, around 1700, late 18th century, and most of the 20th century). We focus on the 17th century, with rare flooding events between two secular so-called “hyper phases”, i.e. frequent and/or severe floods. We propose an analysis of the socio-economic development processes at work in territories at the scale of Frenchcommunesfrom 1806 to 2010. This is an extremely fine scale for such analysis, given that there are 36,000communesin mainland France. The diachronic dimension, spanning two centuries, makes it possible to consider the temporal depth of territorial development. But the primary interest is not so much demographics as the socio-economic dimension of these variations over two centuries. We have analysed demographic changes as the expression of the socio-economic processes that shaped French territory over two centuries. Dynamic mapping of long-term population shifts reflects the industrial expansion of certain territories, decline due to the end of traditional farming practices, the shock produced by two world wars, the Fordist period and the post-war boom; the subsequent impact of an increasingly globalized, metropolitan economy then becomes apparent. Long-studied with respect to its sedimentological features (1897), the Bay of Brest (Western Britanny, France) is a textbook example of a tide-dominated estuary. Characterised by macrotidal conditions, this estuary system is sheltered from the open sea (Iroise Sea) by a narrow strait that partitions the wave tide influences and continental/marine inputs. Sediments are supplied to the bay both by rivers (the Aulne and Elorn rivers) and by marine tidal currents. This study presents new analyses of detailed facies and morphological patterns, based on the integration of multisource data compiling seabed sampling, swath and LIDAR bathymetry, and backscatter imagery. TheMain Map, at a scale of 1:90,000, contains (1) a sedimentological distribution using the ‘Code Manche’ classification, (2) a morphological map, and (3) bathymetric mapping which presents the morphology of marine and terrestrial landforms. This article aims to analyse the processes by which French savings banks have transformed themselves in the past 70 years. Although much is known about how banking has changed in industrialised countries since the late 1970s, in particular through higher competition, regulatory changes and restructuring, we know relatively little about how non-profit banks have been affected. In addition, although the key factors of change highlighted in the literature all reveal an implicit emphasis on exogenous sources of change (i.e. banks respond to changes in their external environment by adjusting their strategy), not much research has been dedicated to investigate the potential endogenous factors of change and, by extension, more complex interactions between banks and their environment have been ignored. This article aims to respond to these two challenges, by drawing on the framework proposed by Haveman and Rao suggesting that organisational change occurs as the outcome of co-evolution between organisations and institutions. Given the key role played by the state in banking, the article proposes an amendment to this framework by taking into account the multiple interdependencies between state and banking actors, and how these interdependencies evolve over time.
