This paper presents an investigation of the underlying mechanism behind the interface charge barrier between oil and oil immersed paper. Two types of oils and two types of cellulose papers are selected in the study. The interface charges of the samples are measured by the pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method and the zeta potentials of different oil-paper combinations are also measured. The results show that the amount of interface charge changes with the type of oils and papers, and is much larger than the Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars (MWS) polarization charge. The difference in the amount of interface charges cannot be attributed to the difference in the conductivity and permittivity of the materials. It is suggested that the barrier for charge transport across the interface, which is formed due to the electric double layer, should be taken into consideration to explain the interface charge behavior in oil-paper insulation. Breakdown strength is an important electrical property of insulating paper. Oil-impregnated paper of various aging states was prepared. Its breakdown voltage was then measured at pulsating direct current (DC) voltage with various ripple factors, and alternating current (AC) and DC voltage for comparison, respectively. The AC breakdown voltage is the smallest, and pulsating DC (r = 1/5) breakdown voltage is the greatest before the paper reaches its end of life. A dielectric model was adopted to investigate the difference in magnitude of breakdown voltage at different voltage waveforms. Meanwhile, it was found that breakdown voltage fluctuated and even increased occasionally during the thermal aging process, and a somewhat opposite changing tendency versus aging time was observed for breakdown voltage at DC voltage and pulsating DC voltage with small ripple factors (r = 1/5 and 1/3), compared with AC voltage. The degree of polymerization (DP) and moisture content of the paper were measured, and the characteristics of the pores and cracks of the paper were obtained to investigate the possible influencing factors of breakdown voltage at different aging states. The results showed that the moisture content, oil absorption ability associated with pores and cracks of paper, and the damage to paper structure all contributed to the variation of the breakdown voltage versus aging time, while the importance of their influence differed as the aging state of paper varied. In accordance with environmental sustainability and in order to optimize the recycling process of prints from indirect electrophotography with liquid toner the results of investigating the effects of changes in printing conditions on the characteristics of recycled fibres is presented. Changing of printing machine conditions, respecting of voltage variations, comprises of the reverse rollers and intermediate cylinder. Based on the results it can be concluded that the change in the voltage of the reverse rollers more affect the recycling efficiency with respect to the voltage change of the intermediate cylinder. Brightness gain is higher when the print for recycling is made on uncoated paper compared to coated, and dependent on the voltage changes. Effective residual ink concentration decreases far more on handsheets obtained from recycled samples on uncoated paper in relation to both sides coated paper. Increasing the positive voltage of intermediate cylinder and increasing the negative charge of reverse rollers increases the 3 D gamut CIE L*a*b* color cubic units. Guidelines for the size of the voltage in order to obtain optimal print reproduction are provided. The further research will include the development in area of clean technologies, advanced materials, closed loop systems; therefore the significant terms in the area of environmental sustainability. Oil-paper insulation of higher voltage winding and traction winding in on-board traction transformers frequently withstand large AC fluctuation voltages mainly combined with AC and inter-harmonic components. This paper presents the characteristics of partial discharge (PD) of oil-paper insulation under superimposed inter-harmonic AC voltages. The experimental results show that the addition of the inter-harmonic to the fundamental sinusoidal component results in variation of peak voltage and dv/dt along the phase. This superimposed inter-harmonic AC voltages has a significant impact on PD including partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV), breakdown voltage, PD repetition rate, and phase resolved partial discharge (PRPD). In addition, a dynamic characterization method of PD statistical parameters is proposed to determine the developing trend. The critical values and inflection points of PD are obtained. Besides, the theoretical mechanism is expounded to better interpret and understand the influence of inter-harmonic component on PD properties. In this paper, the temporal space charge dynamics under both temperature and voltage polarity reversal of an epoxy resin impregnated crepe paper are characterized by pulsed electroacoustic method. It is found that the space charge injection and the interfacial traps located between the epoxy and paper plays an important role in determining the space charge dynamics. The results reveal that below 353 K, the calculated interfacial charge density is consistent with the Maxwell-Wagner (MW) model, while above 353 K, it is smaller than the measured value. The time constant during charging is much smaller than that predicted by the MW model and the space charge injection showed polarity effect, which leads to the interfacial charge densities under polarity poling voltage not being equal. A piezoelectric based touch sensitive device has been successfully fabricated by screen printing silver (Ag) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) inks as conductive and piezoelectric materials, respectively, on paper substrate. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was performed to verify the formation of β-phase crystals in the PVDF layer during the curing process. Voltages, as high as 0.22 V, were observed for human finger touch tests and a sensitivity of 0.3 V/N was obtained when varying forces ranging from 0.2 N to 1.4 N, in steps of 0.2 N, were applied on the printed device. Transformer oil, insulating paper, high voltage direct current (HVDC) bushings and on-load tap changer (OLTC) are essential parts of converter transformers. When the power flow of the HVDC system is reversed or a sudden outrage occurs, the charge field will deform the dielectric internal electric field, thus easily leading to the occurrence of discharge or insulation damage. In this case, it is necessary to carry out the characterization of the oil?paper interface to avoid these consequences. This paper analyses the interface charge accumulation and dissipation characteristics of an oil?paper insulation system under DC and polarity reversal voltages. In this paper, induced electrification was used to charge the composite oil?paper insulation. The amplitude of DC and polarity reversal voltages applied in this paper was 4 kV, and paper with thicknesses of 0.08 and 0.13 mm was used. This research offers a theoretical exploration to optimize the transformer oil? paper insulation structure and prevent damage to its insulation systems. From the research on different layers and thicknesses of paper, it can be concluded that the decay is fast in the initial period and then becomes slower with the lapse of time until finally the decay curve tends to become flat. With an increase in the number of the paper layers, the interface charge density decreases. So in real life multilayer paper is used to avoid failures owing to its structural weakness. Regarding the DC polarity reversal effect, increasing the thickness of the paper is equivalent to adding paper layers. The dissipation rate of the positive interface charge is quicker than that of the negative one. In the polarity reversal test, the dissipation rate becomes smaller as the reversal time gets longer. This paper presents an experimental work investigating the failure data of oil-impregnated paper under pulsating DC voltage. The failure data of the oil-impregnated paper specimens were obtained through constant voltage stress tests; the Weibull distribution was used to estimate the statistical distribution of failure data. The exponential function (EF) and the inverse power function (IPF) were used to modify the Weibull distribution of failure data, so as to obtain two dual-variable Weibull failure distributions (WFDs), which were used to analyze failure data of oil-paper specimens obtained under pulsating DC and individual DC and AC voltages. Their adequacies were evaluated by using failure data obtained through the constant stress tests under various voltages. Both EF-modified and IPF-modified WFDs show more adequacy for failure data of oil-paper insulation under DC and pulsating DC voltages than AC voltages. The oil-paper insulation of valve-side windings in a high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter transformer is subjected to both complicated voltage and severe thermal stresses. Partial discharge (PD) occurring in oil-paper bounded cavities is influenced by voltage stress type as well as temperature. This paper presents PD behaviors in an oil-paper bounded gas cavity under pulsating DC voltages. The voltage across the gas cavity and PD inception voltages at different test conditions are analyzed. Influences of temperature on statistical PD distributions and parameters are also presented. A numerical model is used to interpret PD behaviors under pulsating DC voltages and various temperatures. Experimental results and theoretical statements show that the temperature exhibits a great influence on the behaviors of cavity discharge under pulsating DC voltages. The oil-impregnated paper, as a vital part in the oil-paper insulation system, serves as the main insulation medium in converter transformer suffering various electric fields. However, the accumulated surface charge on the paper would accelerate the degradation of insulation system and may lead to surface flashover. Direct-fluorination is a method to change the chemical components of polymer matrix thus could affect the surface property of the dielectric material without the alternation of bulk property. This paper presents a method to modify the surface structure of the paper applied in transformers. The paper used in the experiment was treated using the F2/N2 mixture with a volume fraction of 10% for the F2 gas at a pressure of 0.05 MPa in a reaction vessel for 2, 5, 10 and 15 min, respectively. The chemical elements, functional group and physical morphology of the paper before and after modification were measured with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) and scanning electron micrographs (SEM), respectively. Surface and volume resistivity of the fluorinated paper were measured. Furthermore, the surface charge property of the oil-impregnated paper was measured under various positive and negative voltages. Obtained results showed that the fluorination had an obvious influence on the chemical property and surface structure of the paper leading to the reduction of surface and volume resistivity. The treatment was shown to reduce the initial potential and cause acceleration in charge decay process. The trap distribution of the paper surface presented alternation as well. To investigate the characteristics of micro bridges and their interactions with partial discharge (PD) in oil-paper insulation under DC voltage, an experimental platform with two-copper-electrode models is established. Generation and growth of micro bridge impurities are observed. PDs in experimental process are detected and analyzed. The result shows that the generation and growth of micro bridges have three stages based on their quantity and shape. At first stage PD accelerates the generation of micro bridges. At second stage the grown bridges trigger stronger discharges. At the last stage a so-called "hazardous bridge" that triggers highly intensive PDs emerges, through which breakdown happens. Therefore, bridges and PDs promote each other to cause insulation failure. In addition, impurities at the second stage are observed to transform into pile-like, bridge-like or particle-like shapes. The transformation process is considered to relate with the change of composition force on fiber bundles. The article presents the results of comparative investigations of partial discharges in two insulation systems; aramid-enhanced cellulose paper-mineral oil, and pure cellulose paper-mineral oil. Partial discharges were investigated in a diagonal electric field with vertical and horizontal components. This field is treated as the most dangerous for insulation. The research was carried out on Nomex® 910 paper and cellulose paper samples, each paper being 0.25 mm thick. Samples of the two materials were tested at four levels of moisture. The inception voltage of partial discharges of all samples tested decreased as their moisture content increases. It was also proved that Nomex® 910 has a significantly higher partial discharge inception voltage than the cellulose paper, although this difference decreased with increasing moisture content. Heretofore, unlike HVAC transformers, there is not much experience in both insulation design guides and test methods for ultra HV converter transformers. This special insulation phenomenon is very prominent due to the complication of voltage applied on valve-side windings of converter transformers. There is a severe lack of empirical research on partial discharge in oil-paper insulation under the combined ACDC voltage. The study in this paper provides a timely research into the issues. Nine possible configurations, which intent to simulate different defects in the transformer, have been investigated. The PD inception voltages varied ratios of combined AC-DC voltages were conducted. The discharge magnitude and its relation with the applied voltage for selected four common configurations were obtained during voltage increasing and decreasing respectively, which presented the PD initiating process and also reflected the insulation behavior of dielectrics. Besides, the Finite Element Analysis Soft was used to propose the effect of morphology of electrode surface (3 dimensional roughness is approximately 0.03 mm) on PD characteristics, which is very lacking in the previous references. To facilitate better interpretation of dielectric response measurements--thereby directing numerical evidence for condition assessments of oil-paper-insulated equipment in high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) transmission systems--a novel approach is presented to estimate the parameters in the extended Debye model (EDM) using wideband frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS). A syncretic algorithm that integrates a genetic algorithm (GA) and the Levenberg-Marquardt (L-M) algorithm is introduced in the present study to parameterize EDM using the FDS measurements of a real-life 126 kV oil-impregnated paper (OIP) bushing under different controlled temperatures. As for the uncertainty of the EDM structure due to variable branch quantity, Akaike's information criterion (AIC) is employed to determine the model orders. For verification, comparative analysis of FDS reconstruction and results of FDS transformation to polarization--depolarization current (PDC)/return voltage measurement (RVM) are presented. The comparison demonstrates good agreement between the measured and reconstructed spectroscopies of complex capacitance and tan δover the full tested frequency band (10-4 Hz-10³ Hz) with goodness of fit over 0.99. Deviations between the tested and modelled PDC/RVM from FDS are then discussed. Compared with the previous studies to parameterize the model using time domain dielectric responses, the proposed method solves the problematic matching between EDM and FDS especially in a wide frequency band, and therefore assures a basis for quantitative insulation condition assessment of OIP-insulated apparatus in energy systems. In this paper, the rapid aging due to Partial Discharge (PD) activity was investigated in unaged and thermally aged oil-impregnated paper with a disk-shaped cavity between the sheets of paper. The PD inception voltage and the voltage for instantaneous breakdown were measured, and the time to breakdown was measured by applying voltages less than the instantaneous breakdown voltage. A comparison between time to breakdown of unaged and thermally aged paper shows no significant difference between thermally aged and unaged paper at sustaining PD activity. The time to breakdown as a function of applied electric field was plotted and compared for both cases showing points scattered around a line in log-log scale. Changes of the PD parameters, such as PD magnitude and PD repetition rate were analyzed from the beginning of PD activity up to the moment of breakdown. The results show that the number and magnitude of PD increase at the beginning of aging until they reach to a maximum value, then both quantities decrease slowly over time until the final puncture breakdown occurs. The results emphasize the importance of PD monitoring on real equipment with oil-impregnated paper as insulation system, such as power transformers, since a focus on the number and magnitude of PD at just the present time may mislead the interpretation. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements performed on unaged and thermally aged paper showed an increasing trend of ε" after the sheets of paper were exposed to thermal aging for longer time. Water (H2O) microdroplets are sprayed onto a magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) and Nafion-coated graphite mesh using compressed N2 or air as the nebulizing gas. The resulting splash of microdroplets enters a mass spectrometer and is found to contain ammonia (NH3). This gas–liquid–solid heterogeneous catalytic system synthesizes ammonia in 0.2 ms. The conversion rate reaches 32.9 ± 1.38 nmol s−1 cm−2 at room temperature without application of an external electric potential and without irradiation. Water microdroplets are the hydrogen source for N2 in contact with Fe3O4. Hydrazine (H2NNH2) is also observed as a by-product and is suspected to be an intermediate in the formation of ammonia. The effect of HV impulses on surface and cavity partial discharges (PD) of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) is investigated in this work, by subjecting specimens to impulse voltages superimposed on a continuous AC voltage. The superposition of transient and AC voltage is relevant to insulation systems in power-system equipment, which is exposed to transients such as lightning and switching impulses during its operation. For several different PD-generating defects in oil-impregnated paper, the PD behaviors before and after the impulse are compared. The influence of moisture content is studied by using OIP with moisture content <0.5%, 3.0% and 5.5%. The results show a distinctive behavior of PD due to the impulse for each defect and insulation condition, either by change in the PD rate and magnitude or by causing PD inception or extinction. Recordings of the voltage signals and associated PD measurements during and after the incidence of a high voltage transient are of potential use for condition assessment of the insulation of power transformers and their bushings, as a form of online diagnostics. In comparison with the AC and DC working voltages, the effect of switching impulse voltage on insulation is very different because of its fast-rising rate and large amplitude. This paper mainly focuses on the characteristics of PD in oil-impregnated paper insulation under switching impulse voltage. First, a robust experimental platform was set up including the impulse power source, test samples with uniform gas and oil gap, and the signal acquisition and processing system. PD characteristics in the air and oil gap are analyzed and compared involving the time-domain waveforms, the variation tendency of the average amplitude and numbers of PD pulses, the occurrence time and the instantaneous value of impulse corresponding to the first PD. Based on the dielectric barrier discharge (filament) theory, a parallel microcircuit model was established to explain the similarities and dissimilarities, and to evaluate the gap discharge intensity. The oil-impregnated paper, which is the major section in converter transformer, plays a considerable role in the reliability and safety of power grid. However, the insulation degradation will be accelerated by the accumulation of charges that are on the surface of oil-impregnated paper. Therefore, the operating overvoltage occurs and irremediable damage will appear. Direct fluorination is an effective method of modifying the chemical components of polymer matrix so as to have effects on the surface characteristic of the insulating material without reforming the bulk properties. In this research, for studying effects of fluorination on charge behavior on the surface of oil-impregnated paper under the application of DC and impulse voltage, the F2/N2 compound, which the volume fraction for the F2 gas occupied 10 % and the pressure was 0.05 MPa in a reaction kettle for 5, 30 and 60 min respectively, was applied. Meanwhile, the chemical bond groups and the surface morphology of the fluorinated specimen were tested. Besides, the DC voltage amplitude was 4 kV and the applied time was 4 min. The impulse frequency was 500 Hz and the impulse voltage amplitude was 1, 2, 3 and 4 kV, respectively. The charge properties under various situations were investigated. From the research under the application of different fluorination time, impulse voltage amplitudes and polarities, conclusions can be drawn that, fluorination has significant effects on the chemical structure properties and surface characteristic of oil-impregnated paper. Furthermore, the initial potential can be reduced and the decay process of surface charge can be accelerated with different fluorination time increasing from 0 to 30 min. Nevertheless, the tendency is the opposite when the fluorination time continuously extends from 30 to 60 min. The trap distribution also exhibits alternation through the fluorination. Due to its excellent performance, oil-paper insulation has been widely used in many power apparatuses including converter transformer of high voltage direct current (HVDC) system. Space charge accumulation phenomena may significantly distort local electric field inside transformer and cause oil-paper insulation overstressing. As a result of long term operation, oil-paper gradually degrades. In most severe cases, the breakdown of insulation system may occur. In this work, the effect of space charge on breakdown characteristics of aged oil-paper insulation is investigated. Oil-paper samples with different aging states are obtained by thermally accelerated aging for various periods of time, categorized by the degree of polymerization (DP) of 1107 (new), 725, 504, 376 and 241, respectively. Experimental results show that the breakdown voltage of oil-paper samples without pre-stressing remains almost constant with thermal degradation. After the homo-polarity pre-stress, when the DP value is higher than ∼300 (from 1107 to 376), the breakdown voltage has an increasing tendency with an increase in thermal degradation. On the contrary, the breakdown voltage presents a decreasing tendency after the hetero-polarity pre-stress. When the DP is lower than ∼300 (DP241), the changes of breakdown voltage does not remain the same trend as previous samples after pre-stressing. Meanwhile, space charge distributions in different aged samples are measured by the pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method, and the trap parameters are correspondingly evaluated. It has been experimentally demonstrated that special attention should be paid to space charge accumulation and aging state of oil-paper insulation, which may lead to severe insulation accidents. Oil-paper insulation system is an extraordinarily essential system of converter transformers as well as HVDC bushings. When the system changes its state, such as switching the thyristors, operating over-voltage appears, and the charge will deform the dielectric internal electric field, thus easily leading to the occurrence of discharge or insulation failure, so charge accumulation and dissipation on oil-paper insulation under pulse voltage need more investigation. This paper studies the surface charge behavior on double-layer oil-paper insulation under pulse voltage and inducing electrification was used to charge the oil-paper composite. Studies of various voltage amplitudes, pulse frequencies, numbers and polarities showed that the decay is fast initially, and then becomes slower with the time. Eventually the dissipation of charge behaviors tends to be flat. With the increase of voltage amplitudes, the surface potential rises, and less positive charges are accumulated on the surface than negative charges. The increase of the pulse frequency causes the initial values of surface potential a little smaller and the charge to dissipate more quickly. Also, with the increase of pulse numbers, the initial value gets bigger and the surface charge would be slowly dissipated. From the tdV/dt and decay time curves, the figures of positive voltage usually have two peaks, while there is only one peak in most of the curves under the negative one. With the increase of voltage amplitudes, the charge will dissipate more quickly. From the research of different voltage amplitudes and charging times of the paper, conclusions can be drawn that the decay is fast initially, and then becomes slower with the lapse of time. At last the dissipation trend tends to be flat. With the increase of the voltage amplitudes, the surface potential rises more rapidly, and higher voltage would also cause the charge to dissipate more quickly. Longer charging times would cause the charge to dissipate a bit more slowly. The decay rate of the negative voltage is a little smaller than that of the positive charge. Moreover, when it comes to the effect on the interface charge of the paper layers, the surface potential is more proportional to the increase of paper layers. When the amplitude of the voltage applied in the test is small or the charging time is short enough, the interface charge can be hardly accumulated on the bottom layer. In addition, the tdV/dt and the decay time curves under the positive voltage usually have two peak values, while there is only one peak value in most of the curves under the negative condition. Space charge behavior is important in the oil-immersed-paper insulation in converter transformers for HVDC transmission. This paper reports an investigation of the space charge property in samples with two layers of oil-immersed-paper and oil. Based on pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) technique, a waveform recovery method was proposed to get rid of the effects of interface and anisotropy on PEA result, and the space charge distributions in the two-layer samples under different voltage and oil thicknesses were measured. It?s found that the charges with the same polarity as oil side electrode were accumulated at the interface and gradually increased with the increase of applied voltage. However, the positive charge charges always appeared in the oil under positive and negative voltages. Moreover, the charges in samples increased with the increase of applied voltage, while the amount of interface charges decreased with the increase of oil thickness. Due to the existence of interfacial charges, the electrical field in oil-immersed-paper was distorted with its maximum close to the interface. It is indicated that due to the different mobility properties of charges in paper and oil and the interface trap state, the interface between paper and oil plays an important role in charge formation and decay. An oil-paper insulation system which will withstand DC voltage under normal conditions is a key component of converter transformers as well as high voltage direct current (HVDC) bushings. When the system changes its state, operating overvoltage appears. This kind of overvoltage will consequently affect the application of oilimmersed facilities and the safety of entire grid. Therefore, this paper studies the charge coupling behavior of double-layer oil-paper insulation under DC and pulse voltages. From the research of different pulse voltage amplitudes, pulse numbers and polarity, conclusions can be drawn that, with the increase of the pulse voltage amplitudes, DC and pulse voltages in the same polarity cause the absolute value of the initial surface potential to decrease and then rise; while in different polarities, the charge with the same polarity as the pulse voltage increases. Furthermore, for the same pulse voltage, the absolute initial value of the DC voltage applied in the same polarity is higher than that in different polarities. Considering the pulse number effect, it is obvious that the initial value increases with the increase in the pulse number, and then reaches saturation. The paper presents new diagnostic method applied to assess aging degree for paper-oil insulation used in professional electrical power device, primarily including medium and high power transformers. The described method is based on modified diagnostics using the recovery voltage effect occurring in dielectrics (RVM ? Recovery Voltage Methods). Modification of the RVM method applied so far, which is now used only to assess moistening degree for paper-oil insulation in power transformers, consists in a new parametric analysis of recovery voltage time characteristics. Simulation and experimental tests carried out in laboratory conditions for adequately prepared insulation samples have proven that the time-constant of recovery voltage decay (?R_MIN) is the most susceptible parameter as regards quantitative change in the function of aging of the examined insulation. This conclusion is also confirmed by statistical studies, in which a multi-parameter variance analysis method has been applied. An original equivalent circuit diagram of the insulation has been used to simulate aging degree of paper-oil insulation samples in numerical tests. A method of predicting the residual breakdown electrical field strength of an epoxy-mica paper insulation system is described. This method was developed by using data on service?aged stator bars from generators as well as accelerated aging model bars. Thermal aging, mechanical aging, and combined thermal and mechanical aging were done individually as accelerated aging. The partial discharge characteristics, dissipation factor, and breakdown voltage were measured on the model bars and service?aged bars from generators. From these results, the residual breakdown electrical field strength was predicted based on the partial discharge characteristics and dissipation factor. First, the dominant type of deterioration (thermal or mechanical aging) on a bar?s insulation was determined by the pattern of voltage?partial discharge magnitude characteristics. Then the residual breakdown electrical field strength was predicted by using a predicting equation for both thermal and mechanical aging. Each predicting equation uses dissipation factor tip-up (i.e. difference in dissipation factor values between 2 kV and rated voltage) and partial discharge inception electrical field strength. The accuracy of this method was confirmed using data measured on 112 service-aged stator bars from generators and 10 accelerated aged model bars. The 95% confidence interval level included 94% of the measured residual breakdown electrical field strength values. Paper-based microchip electrophoresis has the potential to bring laboratory electrophoresis tests to the point of need. However, high electric potential and current values induce pH and temperature shifts, which may affect biomolecule electrophoretic mobility thus decrease test reproducibility and accuracy of paper-based microfluidic electrophoresis. We have previously developed a microchip electrophoresis system, HemeChip, which has the capability of providing low-cost, rapid, reproducible, and accurate point-of-care (POC) electrophoresis tests for hemoglobin analysis. Here, we report the methodologies we implemented for characterizing HemeChip system pH and temperature during the development process, including utilizing commercially available universal pH indicator and digital camera pH shift characterization, and infrared camera characterizing temperature shift characterization. The characterization results demonstrated that pH shifts up to 1.1 units, a pH gradient up to 0.11 units/mm, temperature shifts up to 40 °C, and a temperature gradient up to 0.5 °C/mm existed in the system. Finally, we report an acid pre-treatment of the separation media, a cellulose acetate paper, mitigated both pH and temperature shifts and provided a stable environment for reproducible HemeChip hemoglobin electrophoresis separation. Repeated impulses have long been considered to affect the insulation properties of electrical equipment. This interesting but rarely studied phenomenon may pose great risks to the reliable operation of power equipment. Therefore, in this work, we focus on the accumulative effect of repeated lightning impulses on the oil-impregnated paper (OIP) used in power transformers. Specifically, we study the effect of space charge on the accumulative characteristics of OIP. A repetitive impulse accumulating test platform was set up, and the tests were conducted to obtain the accumulative characteristics of OIP under repeated lightning impulses. The accumulative characteristics of OIP with various interval time were experimentally identified to study the influence of interval time on the accumulative effect. Then, space charge in OIP samples were investigated using the pulsed electro-acoustic technique. Charge behavior in OIP was analyzed under different conditions, i.e., changing the applied times, amplitude and interval time of the applied lightning impulses. Charge injection and transport occurred during lightning impulse accumulation. The increased application of lightning impulses, high applied voltage, and short interval time contributed to the accumulation and transport of space charges. An experiment studying the physical principles of electrophoresis in liquids was developed for an undergraduate laboratory. We have improved upon the standard agarose gel electrophoresis experimental regime with a straightforward and cost-effective procedure, in which drops of widely available black food coloring were separated by electric field into their dye components on strips of chromatography paper soaked in a baking soda/water solution. Terminal velocities of seven student-safe dyes were measured as a function of the electric potential applied along the strips. Compared to conventional ac cables, the current rating of HVDC cable circuits is more complicated because the permissible current is not only limited by the operating temperature, but also by the electrical stress within the insulation. Therefore the IEC60287 current rating standard is considered insufficient for some HVDC applications because it fails to include the stress limitation. This paper presents an analytical methodology to calculate an electrical stress-limited rating for HVDC cables, which considers the maximum dielectric stress as the current limiting factor. Voltage-controlled three-phase three-leg inverters are widely applied in various occasions. The inverters are generally switched to the current-controlled mode to limit the fault currents when short-circuit faults happen. Under symmetrical fault, the inverter can be controlled as a symmetrical, three-phase current source. However, the voltage limiting will happen under asymmetrical fault. As a result, the fault phase currents will be distorted and cannot be completely controlled. Considering that the voltage limiting is mainly caused by large load impedance of healthy phase under asymmetrical fault, the voltage limiting is avoided by paralleling the virtual impedance with the output filter capacitor in this paper. As a result, the current limiting loop is not broken and the fault phase currents can be effectively controlled. The implementation of virtual impedance in control system and the influence of virtual impedance on the stability of system are also analyzed in detail in this paper. Paper Spray (PS) is an ambient ionisation technique that is conceptually simple, economical, direct and versatile. In its simplest form, the procedure for operation relies on the application of an electric potential to a triangular-shaped paper substrate with the addition of an extraction/spray solvent to generate charge droplets, without requiring any pneumatic assistance. Despite its promise and rapidly growing popularity, there are some practical challenges associated with PS implementation with scope to enhance its performance further. One such challenge relates to only a small fraction of the Taylor cone expansion being sampled at the MS inlet. In this work we propose a new arrangement for PS, which retains the inherent advantages of this popular technique without introducing additional variables, by using an ambient ion focusing lens that is held at the same potential as the paper substrate. A thorough investigation, consisting of visual spray inspection, electric field simulations and analytical evaluation, including analysis of paracetamol from saliva, shows that ambient ion focusing can provide up to a 50% improvement in spray stability, 60% increase in signal intensity and a 30% improvement in detection limits for routine paper spray mass spectrometry analysis. Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) are a promising solution for a wide range of point-of-care applications. The feasibility of inducing ion concentration polarization (ICP) on μPADs has thus far attracted little attention. Accordingly, this study commences by demonstrating the ICP phenomenon in a μPAD with a Nafion ion-selective membrane. We are the first to measure the current-voltage curve on a Nafion-coated μPAD in order to indicate that the ion depletion occurs and the ICP is triggered when the current reaches the limiting current. The ICP effect is then exploited to preconcentrate fluorescein on μPADs incorporating straight and convergent channels. By an optimal geometric design, it is shown that the convergent channel results in a greater preconcentration effect than the straight channel. Specifically, a 20-fold enhancement in the sample concentration is achieved after 130 s given an initial concentration of 10-5 M and an external potential of 50V. By contrast, the straight channel yields only a 10-fold improvement in the concentration after 180 s. Further, the practical feasibility of the proposed convergent-channel μPAD is demonstrated using fluorescein isothiocyanate labeled bovine serum albumin. The experimental results show that a 15-fold enhancement of the initial sample concentration (10-5 M) is obtained after 120 s given an external potential of 50V. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In last period many distribution system operators (DSO) invest significant amount of money in smart metering system. Those investments are in part due to regulatory obligations and in part due to needs of DSO (utilities) for knowledge about electric energy consumption. Term - electric energy consumption, refers not only on real consumption of electric energy but also on data about peak power, unbalance, voltage profiles, power losses etc. Data which DSO can obtain from smart meters depend on type of smart metering system. Further, smart meters as source of data can be implemented in transformer stations (TS) MV/LV and in LV grid at consumer level. Generally, smart meters can be placed in any node of distribution grid. As amount of smart meters is greater, the possibility of data analysis is greater. In this paper a smart metering system of J.P Elektroprivreda HZ HB d.d, Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina will be presented. One statistical approach for analyzing of advanced metering data of TS MV/LV will be presented. Statistical approach presented here is powerful tool for analyzing great amount of data from distribution grid in simple way. For example, transformer in TS MV/LV can be overloaded for 30%, but overload period can be for example single one-hour period in whole year. With smart meter data, false conclusions can be avoided. In concerned case, grid operation engineer will not make decision of transformer replacing. With knowledge of only max. power of transformer (without time series data), false conclusion can be adopted about transformer replacing. This can increase costs of grid operation for DSO. Smart metering can help in transformer monitoring. Voltage drop in LV buses of TS MV/LV can be 10% for example. It means that quick intervention in grid must be performed. But, period of increased voltage drop can be only single one-hour period in whole year (for example). On other side, TS MV/LV can have voltage drop of 7% for example in halfyear period. These data, obtained by smart meters, can help in issuing of priority grid investments. Main contribution of this paper is in performing of the statistical analysis of smart meter data in distribution grid and using the obtained results in maintenance/investment planning process. As a critical component of a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system, resin impregnated paper (RIP) wall bushing has become a weak point because of its surface charge accumulation. This paper studies a model RIP wall bushing core designed by the equal capacitance method. The stationary resistive field along the gas–solid interface of the RIP wall bushing core is investigated theoretically by a gas model, which considers the non-linearly field-dependent volume conductivity. The results show that the gas conductivity along the core surface tends to be an arched distribution from the high-voltage conductor to the end shielding screen. The surface charge mainly accumulates at the turning point of the radius, which may threaten the core's insulation. Then, the surface charge is obtained through a measurement system, where the experimental results are highly consistent with the simulation results. Considering the time constant of charge dissipation is nearly 15 min, it would be better to measure the surface charge on one axial direction of RIP wall bushing core after each voltage application. Delivering high power quality in single‐phase distribution has witnessed more challenges especially with the increased penetration of single‐phase distributed generation (DG). This paper proposes a smart solid‐state‐based transformer, which aims to replace traditional ones, for single‐phase distribution laterals, and provide load balancing and protection to the three‐phase main feeders, that is based on connecting the single‐phase lateral to the three‐phase main feeder through a power electronics converter. This converter transfers balanced power from and to the three‐phase feeder while automatically regulating the lateral single‐phase voltage, hence, assuring high power quality without requiring any transformer on‐load tap changer. A 7‐level packed‐U‐cells (PUC) single‐phase inverter topology was used to deliver single‐phase regulated sinusoidal voltage to the AC loads, and at the same time, it is able to deliver DC power to DC loads. The simulation and hardware‐in‐the‐loop (HIL) results have shown that the proposed topology delivers high power quality for both AC and DC loads under different operating scenarios. Moreover, the converter can play the role of a solid‐state protection device coordinated with other up‐ and downstream protective devices. This study investigates the electrical aging characteristics of oil-paper composite insulation. In this paper, a coils model and test system for oil-paper transformer insulation are designed. The electrical aging tests of the model coils at room temperature and operating temperature are performed using the step-stress method. A new method for estimating the unknown parameters in the inverse power exponent model is proposed, and the inverse power model life formula expressed by voltage and electric field strength is obtained. Considering the electrical aging process at the operating temperature, the allowable field strength of the inter-turn insulation of oil-immersed transformers can be improved. The new parameter estimation method proposed in this paper can be used to calculate the unknown parameters of the step-stress solid insulation aging model. This method has a clear physical meaning and can be solved easily. When the stressed voltage is below a certain threshold value, the life of the transformer coil turn-to-turn insulation grease oiled paper model is longer at operating temperatures compared with that at room temperature; when the voltage is higher than the threshold, it presents the opposite tendency. Piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) based on micro-fibre of polyvinylidene fluoride (micro-fibre polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)). Flexible nanogenerator was developed by addition nanoparticle composition. This PENG fabricated using micro-fibre PVDF/BaTiO3, which was deposited on paper interdigitate substrate by wire electrode free surface electrospinning method. The device from micro-fibre PVDF performed open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current of 13 mV and 380 nA recently. Carrier phase‐shifted sine pulse width modulation is a common modulation strategy for medium‐ and low‐voltage cascaded H‐bridges (CHB). This paper proposes a novel jittered‐carrier phase‐shifted sine pulse width modulation (JCPS‐SPWM) to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the converter. It makes the carrier jitter regularly while the total switching times remain unchanged, which reduces the THD of the bridge arm voltage and current by moving the low‐order output harmonics of the bridge arm voltage and current to filterable high‐order harmonics. Since the total number of switching times remains unchanged, this modulation strategy will not cause any increase in switching loss. A seven‐level CHB simulation model and an experimental prototype are built to verify the effectiveness of the approach. The results show that harmonic content can be reduced by 47.5% compared with the traditional method, thus verifying the effectiveness of the JCPS‐SPWM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Planning maintenance of medium voltage overhead lines is one of the most important issues in the studies on power distribution network, which will prevent and reduce unwanted interruption. In this paper, long‐term maintenance of medium voltage networks was planned by multi‐objective function, including an extended mixed‐integer linear model to optimize costs, energy not supplied (ENS), and average interruption duration index (SAIDI). In addition, the uncertainty about the annual growth rate of the load, the increase in the cost of goods and services and the increase in the selling price of energy as well as various constraints are all included in the desired objective function, which is one of the main innovations of this paper compared to other published studies. To apply the uncertainties, information gap decision theory (IGDT) has been used, and to solve the objective functions, LP‐Metric method has been used. The proposed method was implemented on the standard 11‐bus RBTS network by MATLAB and GAMS. The results showed that three different long‐term maintenance plans proposed here lead to the optimization of the annual maintenance costs of network, reduction in ENS and interruption, and increase in the reliability of the network based on the uncertainty of each feeder. In flip-chip design, voltage drop reduction in the power ground network has become a challenging problem particularly in the modern Multiple Supply Voltage(MSV) designs. An effective P/G network design and floorplanning- based solutions helps to produce a quality power plan in the layout. Hence, this paper proposes an iterative MSV floorplanning methodology that performs modifications in the existing floorplan representation that satisfies the voltage island constraint and produce an IR drop-aware quality layout. Furthermore, the proposed methodology is integrated with commercial tool design flow to analyze the reduction of IR drop in the layout. Two simulation-based experiments are performed in this paper to showcase the significance of this work. Firstly, it presents the simulation results that benchmark the proposed idealogy in non-flip chip designs. Secondly, the presented framework is integrated in flip-chip layouts of FIR design operating with two voltage islands for low power consumption. To understand the ability of the proposed floorplanning approach, the simulation were performed for two different sized P/G mesh structure for various mesh width. Experimental results from both simulations demonstrate that the proposed MSV floorplanning technique is effective in reducing IR drop while optimizing the design for low power dissipation. The nonlinear ac–dc composite electric field in the winding area of the converter transformer was studied by considering the frequency and temperature dependence of the insulation materials in this paper. First, the relative permittivity and conductivity of vegetable oils, mineral oils, and insulation papers were measured at different frequencies and temperatures. Then, the oil-paper insulation structure model of one 500 kV converter transformer valve-side winding was established. The nonlinear composite electric field of the converter transformer insulation with vegetable oils and mineral oils was analyzed. The maximum voltage of the converter transformer with mineral oils is 524.9 kV, at −20 °C and that with vegetable oils is 497.1 kV. This paper introduces a 17-bus 500 kV test system intended for transmission expansion planning (TEP) studies. The overhead lines used in the system are based on an actual 500 kV transmission line geometry. Although several test systems have been developed for various forms of power system analysis, few are specifically tailored for TEP studies at the transmission voltage level, as opposed to the distribution voltage level. Current test systems for TEP studies are limited to single loading conditions only for normal operating conditions, and the majority of these systems are intertwined with issues related to the energy market or devised specifically for integrating new generations and loads into the existing power systems. However, ensuring a test system satisfies both voltage drop and line loading criteria during both normal and all single contingency operations is crucial in TEP studies, and addressing these issues under contingency conditions poses notable challenges. Moreover, practical TEP scenarios involve varied loadings, including peak load and dominant loading (60% of peak load) scenarios, while the existing test systems are configured solely for single loading conditions. To address these technical gaps, this paper introduces the 17-bus test system operating at a transmission voltage level of 500 kV, meeting technical requirements under normal and all single contingency operations for both peak load and dominant load scenarios. Detailed specifications of the proposed test system and load flow analysis at both normal and contingency conditions for different loading conditions are presented. In the electric vehicle wireless power transmission system, the high-frequency alternating magnetic field between the transmitter and receiver can have a certain impact on the health of living organisms and may even lead to lesions. In addition, metal foreign objects in an alternating magnetic field can cause their own heating or even cause fires due to the eddy current effect, so foreign object detection is an essential function in the wireless power transmission system of electric vehicles. In order to prevent metals and living organisms from entering the charging area and causing harm to the charging system and living organisms, this paper proposes a method for detecting living organisms and metal foreign objects. Firstly, the equivalent circuits for the detection systems of the living organism foreign objects and metal foreign objects are established, respectively, and the working theory of the detection system is analyzed by deriving equations. Secondly, the comb capacitor simulation model was constructed, and the comb capacitor electrode spacing, wire thickness, and capacitor spacing were designed based on the scale factor γ to explore the effects of the height and bottom area of the living organism's foreign object on the comb capacitor. We constructed a simulation model of the detection coil and designed the inner diameter D, the number of turns N, and the wire spacing S of the detection coil according to the scale factor β. An arrayed detection coil and comb capacitor combination mode is proposed to realize the function of the simultaneous detection of metal and living organism foreign objects, and a compensation capacitor is introduced to keep the detection system in a resonant state. Lastly, a platform for foreign object detection experiments was set up to detect metal screws and beef chunks compared to the detection area without foreign objects. Metal screws entering the detection area cause a 20% voltage drop in the detection circuit resistor, and beef chunks entering the detection area cause a 30% voltage drop in the detection circuit resistor, so the detection method is effective in detecting both metals and living organisms. The basis for judging whether the battery pack is balanced is generally whether the voltage of the battery cell is consistent because the voltage of the battery cell is very easy to obtain. However, when the voltage of battery cells is the same and the battery management system (BMS) turns off the equalization, it will get poor balance performance. In this paper, a new balancing strategy is proposed, while the calculated state of charge (SOC) difference between the battery cells instead of the voltage reaches the set value, the BMS turns on or off, and the difference in the SOC between battery cells is obtained by adding a small amount of calculation to the difference in voltage between battery cells, due to the long balancing time of the battery, the battery will enter a steady state at the end of balancing, based on the voltage difference of battery cell, the voltage drop generated by the balancing current on the ohmic resistance and polarization resistance is added, combined with the open circuit voltage (OCV)‐SOC curve, the difference in battery voltage can be indirectly converted into a difference in SOC. This strategy will appropriately delay the battery balancing time to make up for the drop in the voltage of the balanced battery cell after the BMS turns off the balancing. In this paper, the proposed strategy and performance are analyzed in detail, the experimental platform is designed to verify, and the battery pack is tested under static and discharge conditions. Although the equalization goal is the same voltage between battery cells, using the voltage‐based equalization strategy, the voltage difference between the battery cells is 8 and 6 mV, respectively, while the strategy proposed in this paper is 2 and 3 mV, which has better performance. The conditions of heat source and heat sink in a geothermal ORC system may frequently vary due to variations in geological conditions, ambient temperature and actual operation. In this study, an off-design performance prediction model for geothermal ORC systems is developed according to special designs of critical components, and an optimal control strategy which regards the turbine guide vane angle, the refrigerant pump rotational speed and the cooling water mass flow rate as control variables is proposed to maximize the net power output. Off-design performances of both subcritical and supercritical ORCs are analyzed. The results indicate that, under the optimal control strategy, the net power output of both ORCs increase with greater geothermal water mass flow rate, higher geothermal water inlet temperature and lower cooling water inlet temperature, which is mainly due to a greater working fluid mass flow rate, higher turbine inlet pressure and lower condensing pressure, respectively. The net power output of supercritical ORC is always greater than that of subcritical ORC within the range of this study, but the difference tends to decrease when supercritical ORC activates the geothermal water reinjection temperature restriction. Aiming at the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) applied to the ship DC microgrid in the face of pulse load disturbance is prone to make the SOFC voltage drop too large leading to the DC grid oscillation problem. In this paper, a stability criterion method for SOFC-Li battery DC system based on hybrid potential function is proposed. Firstly, a mathematical model of shipboard DC microgrid with SOFC-Li battery is established and the accuracy of the model is verified. Then, the stability criterion of the system based on the hybrid potential function under large disturbances is constructed. Subsequently, the effects of system stability under impulse load conditions were analysed under different parameters. Based on the constructed criterion, simulation verification of the stability boundary conditions of the SOFC system operating independently or jointly with a lithium battery system is carried out. The experimental results show that the proposed stability criterion and control strategy are effective in accurately predicting the system stability boundary. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method in improving the stability of the system and provide a theoretical basis for further research on the dynamic characteristics of SOFC systems under complex load conditions. This paper is concerned with a linear theory of thermopiezoelectricity in which the second gradient of the displacement, the second gradient of the electric potential and the second temperature gradient are included in the classic set of independent constitutive variables. The present paper is based on Green–Naghdi thermomechanics. The introduction of the entropy flux tensor leads to constitutive equations that depend on the second temperature gradient. The fundamental boundary-initial-value problems are formulated and the uniqueness of the solution is studied. Two applications of the theory are presented.
