One of the sectors worst affected by the pandemic is the tourism sector. The present study conducted a bibliometric analysis on the theme 'COVID-19 and destination marketing'. It was found that China, Spain, and the USA have conducted maximum research on the theme above. According to Bradford's law, Sustainability (Switzerland), the Journal of Destination Marketing and Management, and Current Issues in Tourism were the top journals publishing papers related to the theme. Kin J was the most productive author. Journal clustering revealed the formation of three clusters namely tourism, health/environmental, and technical clusters. Amid the pandemic, extensive research was conducted on tourism destinations, development, and perception. Researchers may shift their focus from their themes. Human rights and tourism were COVID-19's driving themes. These issues have been thoroughly explored in the literature and may direct researchers' attention toward a thorough assessment of the literature. Tourism, climate change, and the leisure industry were grouped under a specific theme for COVID-19. To characterize COVID-19-induced destination marketing and its behaviors, more research is needed to comprehend the intricacies of this theme. The appropriate policy responses for COVID-19 are being vigorously debated, especially regarding whether there is a trade-off between containing the spread of the virus and reducing the economic recession. The aim of the paper is to examine the effect of various economic policies on the leisure and recreation industry under public health interventions during the pandemic. We collect data for 131 countries/regions from February to October 2020 and employ fixed-effects models to examine the impact of economic policies after controlling for public health interventions and country- and time-fixed effects. Results show that, with an impact lag, economic policies significantly promote current-date leisure and recreation activities under public health intervention; this effect peaks after around one month, and the two policies mutually reinforce each other in the medium term. The positive effect of economic policies ranges from 5 to 11%, depending on the magnitude of public health interventions. With regard to the different categories of measures, monetary policies have an immediate positive announcement effect while fiscal policies significantly promote leisure and recreation activities, though with a response lag. From the 1990s until the pre-COVID-19 outbreak, commercial nightlife has become central to the urban branding, and tourism marketing strategies of many European cities. However, the night-time leisure industry has stalled in Europe as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic and the unprecedented lock-down and physical distancing measures imposed by several national governments. Default risk in the Travel and Leisure (T&L) industry remains understudied despite its implications for the industry's health and stability. This paper investigates the transmission of default risk among US T&L firms over various credit horizons from July 22, 2008 to December 9, 2022, paying special attention to the impact of COVID-19. The short-, medium-, and long-term default risk factors are extracted from the Credit Default Spread (CDS) curve of the US T&L industry then used within a connectedness approach. The results reveal considerable default risk transmission, particularly in the long-term. Default risk transmission has spiked across all horizons since the pandemic, reflecting the deterioration in credit quality of T&L firms under the pandemic. Analysis of the drivers of default risk transmission shows that several macro-financial variables, especially news market sentiment and stock market volatility induced by the pandemic, have an important explanatory role. • Quantify default risk transmission in the US Travel and Leisure industry. • Show systemic vulnerability, particularly during COVID-19 outbreak. • Default risk is transmitted particularly at longer horizons. • Impact of macro-economic drivers is heterogeneous across credit horizons. This study explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the performance of the US travel and leisure stock, using daily data sets from December 31, 2019 to December 2, 2020. Applying the multifactor model, which is an extension of the capital asset pricing model, the study examines how governmental announcements and policy measures to contain the pandemic situation impact the stock prices, controlling for confirmed cases, growth rates, and death rates owing to the pandemic. Further, to reduce the potential bias in heterogeneity, crucial macroeconomic regressors such as oil prices, exchange rates, and a volatility index are included. The study obtains a heterogeneous impact across quantiles. Government stringency measures negatively impact the travel and leisure stock prices, while the announcement of economic support programs positively impacts the stocks, particularly at the high-end quantiles. We advocate that the introduction of asset-light and fee-based strategies will enable the firms to overcome the adverse implications of the pandemic in the long run. This study offers major insights for protecting and developing the recovery of the travel and leisure stock market by considering the importance of government interventions and their effective implementation. This study explores the vulnerability and resilience of the US Leisure and Hospitality industry sector-wise by taking employment levels in seven different business segments. An autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model approach was applied to daily time series data of employment and COVID-19 to assess each sector's fragility and resilience. The findings reveal that museums and historical places, performing arts, and sports are the worst influenced sectors and exhibit low resilience. The accommodation sector initially shows high vulnerability; however, it bounces back by showing high resilience compared to some of the other sectors. The rest of the sector presents the same story negatively influenced by pandemic but eventually reveals a sign of recovery.
