Modular construction is gaining worldwide attention. Building services are the systems that make buildings comfortable and efficient. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems provide heating, cooling, lighting, energy distribution, and water services. Modular construction integrates building services into prefabricated modules at the manufacturing site, which are then transported to the construction site. A systematic review (SR) of building services integration within modular construction is thus necessary. Prior to the SR, a quantitative analysis of the retrieved 115 publications from the Scopus database was explored. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guide, 13 relevant publications from the Scopus database and via the Research Rabbit application were profiled. MEP systems integration approaches and research needs were examined. Recent literature emphasizes technology integration and sustainability, while early studies laid the framework for modular approaches. The findings highlight the potential of digital technologies like building information modeling (BIM) and recommend a holistic framework for the entire building's lifetime, from design to operation. Future research directions include performance studies, modular building service adaptation, and industry-wide standards building. Chitosan is readily available from various biomass waste streams including crustaceans, cephalopods, insects, and fungus. The polymer possesses primary amine groups which are great handles for functionalization. Yet efficient functionalization with high degree of substitution is challenging to achieve via solvothermal methods due to limitations in chitosan solvation properties. Herein we report a mechanochemical and aging-based method directly addressing this point. Working in the solid phase helps stabilize the formation of Schiff bases from chitosan and aldehydes, affording a novel pathway to the green functionalization of chitosan by reductive alkylation, with unprecedentedly high degrees of substitution. The method showed great efficacy and compatibility for chitosan to be functionalized with 21 different aldehyde substrates and a low process mass intensity (PMI) of 36. Active learning has been increasingly important in tertiary education in recent years due to its powerfully favourable impact on students' learning attitudes and efficacy. Indeed, the way that a classroom is set up has a direct impact on how well students learn and how well teachers teach. The continuous evaluation of students' learning performance is essential for guiding future classroom renovations and creating a cutting-edge learning environment for both students and teachers. The aims of this paper were to provide a better understanding of the latest development trend of learning mode preference in tertiary education and to investigate any underlying similarities and differences in the perceptions between teachers and students. To support both teaching and learning, an empirical questionnaire survey was conducted among teachers and students in Hong Kong to assess the effectiveness of various active learning techniques and passive learning techniques adopted in tertiary education. Opinion-based data were collected on the perceived benefits and disadvantages of both learning techniques as well as the importance of various classroom design features. To determine the significance of the variations in opinions between teachers and students on the survey responses, descriptive statistical analyses using the mean score and Mann–Whitney U-test were carried out. The results of the Mann–Whitney U-test on the advantages of traditional learning showed that the following variables significantly varied: 'direct information from the teacher'; 'timesaving (group discussion may waste time)' and 'allow more time for Q&A'. These advantages were generally rated higher from the viewpoint of students rather than teachers. However, no significant difference was established concerning the limitations of traditional learning. The findings of this study can help teachers and instructors to understand how different teaching and learning methods affect students' ability to learn effectively, which can ultimately help institutional policymakers to determine the necessary essential requirements for orchestrating classroom designs to create more conducive teaching and learning environments. The findings also aim to inform policymakers and educational institutions on the impact of pedagogical change on the fundamental design requirements for a flexible classroom environment supportive of students' active learning, especially in tertiary education. Vaccines play an important role in maintaining human and animal health worldwide. There is continued demand for effective and safe adjuvants capable of enhancing antigen-specific responses to a target pathogen. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) is a highly contagious calicivirus that often induces high mortality rates in rabbits. Herein, we evaluated the activity of an experimental sulfated lactosyl archaeol (SLA) archaeosome adjuvant when incorporated in subunit vaccine formulations targeting RHDV. The subunit antigens consisted of RHDV–CRM197 peptide conjugates or recombinant RHDV2 VP60. SLA was able to enhance antigen-specific antibody titers and cellular responses in mice and rabbits. Three weeks following immunization, antigen-specific antibody levels in rabbits vaccinated with RHDV2 VP60 + SLA were significantly higher than those immunized with antigen alone, with geomean titers of 7393 vs. 117. In addition, the SLA-adjuvanted VP60-based formulations were highly efficacious in a rabbit RHDV2 challenge model with up to 87.5% animals surviving the viral challenge. The world is currently facing a global health crisis due to the rapid increase in antimicrobial-resistant bacterial infections. One of the most concerning pathogens is Acinetobacter baumannii, which is listed as a Priority 1 pathogen by the World Health Organization. This Gram-negative bacterium has many intrinsic antibiotic resistance mechanisms and the ability to quickly acquire new resistance determinants from its environment. A limited number of effective antibiotics against this pathogen complicates the treatment of A. baumannii infections. A potential treatment option that is rapidly gaining interest is "phage therapy", or the clinical application of bacteriophages to selectively kill bacteria. The myoviruses DLP1 and DLP2 (vB_AbaM-DLP_1 and vB_AbaM-DLP_2, respectively) were isolated from sewage samples using a capsule minus variant of A. baumannii strain AB5075. Host range analysis of these phages against 107 A. baumannii strains shows a limited host range, infecting 15 and 21 for phages DLP1 and DLP2, respectively. Phage DLP1 has a large burst size of 239 PFU/cell, a latency period of 20 min, and virulence index of 0.93. In contrast, DLP2 has a smaller burst size of 24 PFU/cell, a latency period of 20 min, and virulence index of 0.86. Cationic nanomaterials are promising candidates for the development of effective antibacterial agents by taking advantage of the nanoscale effects as well as other exceptional physicochemical properties of nanomaterials. In this study, carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (cCNCs) derived from softwood pulp were coated with cationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) of varying molecular weights. The resulting cationic carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals coated with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (cCNCs–PDDA) nanomaterials were characterized for their structural and morphological properties using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, elemental analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Cationic cCNCs–PDDA were investigated for their antibacterial properties against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli 23934 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa using a bacterial lawn growth inhibition assay. cCNC–PDDA materials displayed marked antibacterial activity, particularly against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. Overall, our results indicated that cCNCs–PDDA could be a potential candidate for antibacterial applications such as antibacterial surfaces or coatings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To unlock nature's potential for functional biomaterials, many efforts have been devoted to isolating the nanocrystalline domains within the supramolecular structure of polysaccharides. Yet, low reactivity and yield in aqueous systems along with excessive solvent usage hinders its development. In this report, the first solvent‐free pathway to access carboxylated chitin and cellulose nanocrystals with excellent mass balance is described, relying on a new method coined high‐humidity shaker aging (HHSA). The method involves a mild grinding of the polysaccharide with ammonium persulfate followed by an aging phase under high‐humidity and on a shaker plate. Insights into the mechanism were uncovered, which highlighted the unique role of high humidity to afford a gradual uptake of water by the material up to deliquescence when the reaction is complete. This research paper assesses the effectiveness of conducting heritage revitalization projects on improving community planning and identifies the advancements and revitalization trends of heritage revitalization in Hong Kong. The study proposes three indicators to judge the effectiveness of heritage revitalization, including attractive appearance and components, creative methods of building techniques and planning, and public acceptance. A case study is adopted to analyze the shortcomings and improvements of the effectiveness of heritage revitalization, along with a comprehensive literature review and statistics related to heritage revitalization in Hong Kong. The results indicated that revitalization is able to effectively modify the outlook of the community and even improve community planning in the future in terms of transportation services, supporting facilities, and living quality. Moreover, by considering the revitalized structure, modern elements and building rehabilitation strategies were included to increase its attractiveness to become emerging tourism spots for business activities. Heritage revitalization practices have been carried out in Hong Kong in the recent decade. The study embarks to identify and analyze the advancements of revitalization development and its revitalizing style reformation by means of the cases recently completed in Hong Kong, which brings insights to academics and policy makers of revitalization in community planning. Biomass is one of the promising alternatives to petroleum‐derived materials and plays a major role in our fight against climate change by providing renewable sources of chemicals and materials. Owing to its chemical and structural complexity, the transformation of biomass into value‐added products requires a profound understanding of its composition at different scales and innovative methods such as combining physical and chemical processes. In this context, the use of mechanochemistry in biomass valorization is currently growing owing to its potentials as an efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly approach. This review highlights the latest advances in the transformation of biomass (i. e., chitin, cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and starch) to functional materials using mechanochemical‐assisted methods. We focused here on the methodology of biomass processing, influencing factors, and resulting properties with an emphasis on achieving functional materials rather than breaking down the biopolymer chains into smaller molecules. Marine biomass waste is a remarkable source of functional molecules and materials. Yet material extraction, conversion and processing are often chemically intensive, preventing the widespread and clean use of these abundant resources for high-end applications. Moreover, current challenges in biomedicine call for the design of novel materials with better functional and mechanical properties. Herein, we present a novel chemical process to afford chitosan nanocrystals (ChsNCs), which uniquely combine a high degree of deacetylation, rod shape and high crystallinity for mechanical robustness. This method is a simple solid-state aging process starting from chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs) and requiring limited chemical and energetic input, which we have quantified using process mass intensity as the sustainability metric. This method, as well as a previously reported solution-based method, afforded a family of novel nanomaterials, which we used to form alginate hydrogels. The resulting materials are the first examples of ChsNC-based hydrogels and featured superior performances in terms of both rheological properties, as well as sustained drug release, as compared to previously reported chitosan/alginate systems. Purpose – The aim of this study is to investigate wearing comfort of summer work uniforms judged by construction workers. Design/methodology/approach – A total of 189 male construction workers participated in a series of wear trials and questionnaire surveys in the summer of 2014. They were asked to randomly wear two types of work uniforms (i.e. uniforms A and B) in the two-day field survey and the subjective attributes of these uniforms were assessed. Three analytical techniques, namely, multiple regression, artificial neural network and fuzzy logic were used to predict wearing comfort affected by the six subjective sensations. Findings – The results revealed that fuzzy logic was a robust and practical tool for predicting wearing comfort in terms of better prediction performance and more interpretable results than the other models. Pressure attributes were further found to exert a greater effect than thermal–wet attributes on wearing comfort. Overall, the use of uniform B exhibited profound benefits on wearing comfort because it kept workers cooler, drier and more comfortable with less work performance interference than wearing uniform A. Originality/value – The findings provide a fresh insight into construction workers’ needs for work clothes, which further facilitates the improvement in the clothing tailor-made design and the enhancement of the well-being of workers. It discusses the role of immobilization strategies and their impact on sensitivity, detection limit and operational and storage stability. It further reflects on the advantages of APTES biosensors in analytical applications including easy preparation, stable monolayers and uniform immobilization surface.

In recent years, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have emerged as a leading biomass-based nanomaterial owing to their unique functional properties and sustainable resourcing. Sulfated cellulose nanocrystals (sCNCs), produced by sulfuric acid-assisted hydrolysis of cellulose, is currently the predominant form of this class of nanomaterial; its utilization leads the way in terms of CNC commercialization activities and industrial applications. The functional properties, including high crystallinity, colloidal stability, and uniform nanoscale dimensions, can also be attained through carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (cCNCs). Herein, we review recent progress in methods and feedstock materials for producing cCNCs, describe their functional properties, and discuss the initial successes in their applications. Comparisons are made to sCNCs to highlight some of the inherent advantages that cCNCs may possess in similar applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cancer remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. While novel treatments have improved survival outcomes for some patients, new treatment modalities/platforms are needed to combat a wider variety of tumor types. Cancer vaccines harness the power of the immune system to generate targeted tumor-specific immune responses. Liposomes composed of glycolipids derived from archaea (i.e., archaeosomes) have been shown to be potent adjuvants, inducing robust, long-lasting humoral and cell-mediated immune responses to a variety of antigens. Herein, we evaluated the ability of archaeosomes composed of sulfated lactosyl archaeol (SLA), a semi-synthetic archaeal glycolipid, to enhance the immunogenicity of a synthetic long peptide-based vaccine formulation containing the dominant CD8+ T cell epitope, SIINFEKL, from the weakly immunogenic model antigen ovalbumin. One advantage of immunizing with long peptides is the ability to include multiple epitopes, for example, the long peptide antigen was also designed to include the immediately adjacent CD4+ epitope, TEWTSSNVMEER. SLA archaeosomes were tested alone or in combination with the toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) agonist Poly(I:C). Overall, SLA archaeosomes synergized strongly with Poly(I:C) to induce robust antigen-specific CD8+ T cell responses, which were highly functional in an in vivo cytolytic assay. Furthermore, immunization with this vaccine formulation suppressed tumor growth and extended mouse survival in a mouse melanoma tumor model. Overall, the combination of SLA archaeosomes and Poly(I:C) appears to be a promising adjuvant system when used along with long peptide-based antigens targeting cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Archaeosomes, composed of sulfated lactosyl archaeol (SLA) glycolipids, have been proven to be an effective vaccine adjuvant in multiple preclinical models of infectious disease or cancer. SLA archaeosomes are a promising adjuvant candidate due to their ability to strongly stimulate both humoral and cytotoxic immune responses when simply admixed with an antigen. In the present study, we evaluated whether the adjuvant effects of SLA archaeosomes could be further enhanced when combined with other adjuvants. SLA archaeosomes were co-administered with five different Toll-like Receptor (TLR) agonists or the saponin QS-21 using ovalbumin as a model antigen in mice. Both humoral and cellular immune responses were greatly enhanced compared to either adjuvant alone when SLA archaeosomes were combined with either the TLR3 agonist poly(I:C) or the TLR9 agonist CpG. These results were also confirmed in a separate study using Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and support the further evaluation of these adjuvant combinations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Removal of toxic organic cationic dye, Auramine O (AO), is critical prior to its discharge to the environment. In this work, wood-based colloidal cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in their anionic forms (sulfated and carboxylated) were examined as nanoadsorbents for the effective removal of cationic toxic AO. Both sulfated and carboxylated CNCs were characterized by FTIR, DLS, zeta potential, AFM and XRD techniques. The impact of both surface functionalities (half-ester sulfate and carboxylate) of CNCs were studied in relation to the adsorption of AO. The batch adsorption experiments were performed at 0 and 25 °C at different contact time and the highest removal percentage (82 %) and adsorption capacity (20 mg g−1) were obtained for the sulfated CNCs for an equilibrium contact time of 30 min. The kinetic data was fitted to the pseudo-second-order adsorption model, with the highest rate constant (0.55 g mg-1. min−1) related to the sulfated CNCs for the adsorption at 0 °C. The calculated thermodynamics parameters indicated that AO adsorption on both CNC samples was a spontaneous exothermic process with a decrease in the entropy of the system for the sulfated CNCs and an increase in entropy for the carboxylated CNCs. Fitting equilibrium data to four different types of isotherms (Henry, Freundlich, Langmuir and Temkin) showed that Freundlich isotherm was the most suitable to describe the adsorption behavior of AO at either 0 or 25 °C. Overall, this study demonstrated the potential application of sustainable and biodegradable wood-based CNCs as green bioadsorbents for the adsorption of toxic cationic AO dye. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditional teaching modes are engaged with teachers delivering knowledge to students with minimum feedback. Teaching is conducted in lecture theaters and classrooms, which are sometimes designed with minimum flexibility for university education. However, the rapid development of information and communication technologies has altered the teaching pedagogy from traditionally teacher-centered to more collaborative learning between teachers and students. Learning spaces should be designed to be interactive and collaborative with suitable physical movement and social engagement among teachers and students. This paper aims to examine the relationships between modern technology and pedagogical shift, and to identify and discuss the essential design principles for effective active learning through built pedagogy. A recent renovation project of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in converting conventional classrooms and lecture theaters to active learning spaces was adopted as a case study to illustrate and validate the design principles and their actual implementation. Feedback and responses from 410 end-user students on the impact of the renovated classrooms and lecture theaters on teaching and learning effectiveness were gleaned through empirical survey questionnaires dispatched face-to-face to students after attending classes in the renovated classrooms and lecture theaters. The results of factor analysis indicated that the 15 variables of key design criteria for active learning spaces were consolidated under six underlying clustered factor groups: (1) Versatility of learning space; (2) interior design of learning environment; (3) modern information technology / audio and video (IT/AV) technologies; (4) interior lighting; (5) comfortable furniture and acoustic design; and (6) interior temperature. The survey findings can serve as good references and useful insights for architects in designing new learning spaces and facilities that assist active and collaborative learning for university students in future. Globally, the demand for protein continues to exceed its supply due to the geometric increase in population. For sustainability reasons, the high demand is leading to a shift in interest from animal-based protein, towards consuming high plant protein, sourced mainly from legumes and pulses. Traditional methods for protein extraction have been deployed to ensure availability and convenient utilization of these novel protein sources. Dry and wet fractionation are the two main categories of traditional protein extraction methods, with dry fractionation being more sustainable and frequently used. However, the repercussions trailing these methods keep encouraging research towards greener extraction pathways to ensure more protein availability and sustainability. The key drivers of this transition are increased yield, quality, uniformity and process eco-friendliness. Microwave, ultrasonic energy, pulse electric field, hydrodynamic cavitation extraction and tribo-electrostatic separation, among other novel technologies, appear to be the most likely techniques to dominate in the next few decades. This prospection hinges on available data of their performance efficiency in pulse / legume protein extraction and observed relatively higher yield potentials, protein quality, demand for less water, solvents and energy. The latter inarguably favors the food-energy-water nexus and could contribute considerably to environmental sustainability. Nonetheless, available knowledge cannot suffice effective and sustainable deployments of these techniques in legume protein extraction. Therefore, the gap on process performance and possible optimization of process parameters of these novel technologies deserves urgent attention. The product-process efficiency is highly critical for better understanding of the chances for process scale-up. This has been identified as the present stage of research in this domain. Tough bioadhesion has important implications in engineering and medicine but remains challenging to form and control. We report an ultrasound (US)-mediated strategy to achieve tough bioadhesion with controllability and fatigue resistance. Without chemical reaction, the US can amplify the adhesion energy and interfacial fatigue threshold between hydrogels and porcine skin by up to 100 and 10 times. Combined experiments and theoretical modeling suggest that the key mechanism is US-induced cavitation, which propels and immobilizes anchoring primers into tissues with mitigated barrier effects. Our strategy achieves spatial patterning of tough bioadhesion, on-demand detachment, and transdermal drug delivery. This work expands the material repertoire for tough bioadhesion and enables bioadhesive technologies with high-level controllability.

In this report, chitin and chitosan nanocrystals were used as biomass-based supports for Pd nanoparticles (NPs) used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck coupling reaction. By using a one-pot fabrication method, a Pd salt precursor was directly reduced and deposited onto these nanocrystal catalysts. Characterization of these nanocomposites showed disperse Pd NPs on the surfaces of the chitinous nanocrystals. Heck coupling model reactions revealed full product yield in relatively benign conditions, outcompeting the use of other catalysts supported on biomass-based nanomaterials, including cellulose nanocrystals. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time the fabrication of carboxylated chitosan nanocrystals (ChsNC) with high degree of deacetylation (DDA) at >80% and narrow size distribution. We also studied its application as a sustainable support material for metal-based catalysts. Carboxylated chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs) were initially prepared through partial cleavage of glycosidic bonds in chitin by ammonium persulfate, with concurrent oxidation of chitin C6 primary alcohols to produce carboxylate groups on the surface of the ChNCs. ChsNCs were subsequently prepared using an alkaline deacetylation procedure in the presence of NaBH 4 to preserve the nanorod structure of the biomaterial. The resulting nanocrystals feature both carboxyl and amino functional groups. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used to determine the morphology and composition of these carboxylated ChNCs and ChsNCs. Subsequently, we tested the ability of the as-made ChsNCs as a biomass-based catalyst support for Au nanoparticles (NPs) using the 4-nitrophenol reduction and the aldehyde-amine-alkyne (A 3 ) coupling reactions to demonstrate its capabilities in regard to the ones of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). In particular, Au NPs over ChsNCs featured the highest turnover frequency (TOF) value for the 4-nitrophenol reduction reported for all Au-based catalysts supported on carbon-based systems. Spectroscopic and imaging techniques confirmed the importance of precisely controlling the redox state of Au as it is being deposited to afford a highly disperse active site on the bionano-support.
