Critical current density is an important parameter reflecting power transmission capacity of HTS cable. Based on the superconducting energy pipeline, a tightly wound cable structure along arc of the pipeline is studied in this paper. Critical current density of electromagnetic thermal coupling is calculated and optimized superconducting cable structure is evaluated. Recognition and localization models can be generally decomposed into three components: encoder, decoder, and task head. In this paper, we rethink the necessity of decoder, as we observe that it brings additional computational and parametric burden. We thus propose to remove the decoder and present a bidirectional cross-scale architecture that is able to obtain rich semantic information and precise localization in a unified backbone. Extensive experiments demonstrate that, different from common encoder-decoder models and other down-sampling and up-sampling backbones, the proposed BiCSNet achieves improved performances compared to existing architectures for pixel-level tasks. In object detection, our BiCSNet brings significant performance improvement by ~ 3% AP at various scales with 13% – 23% fewer FLOPS, compared with ResNet-FPN models on COCO dataset. In Instance segmentation, the AP can be improved by 1% over SpineNet. BiCSNet is also promising for semantic segmentation tasks, as the proposed BiCSNet pre-trained on ImageNet alone significantly outperforms DeepLabv3 pre-trained on both ImageNet and COCO dataset by 1.3% in mIOU with 89% fewer FLOPs on PASCAL VOC 2012. The accurate assessment of lightning-induced over-voltages is essential for proper insulation coordination studies. In this paper, a novel machine learning based Gaussian process regression model is developed for the prediction of lightning-induced over-voltages considering wide range of ground resistivity and permittivity. The lightning-induced over-voltages have been computed using two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain technique associated with Agrawal field to line coupling model. To account for the input space variability, seven predictor variables namely: resistivity, permittivity, return stroke velocity, distance from flashpoint, return stroke peak current, front-time, and height of an overhead line are considered to determine the response variable, that is, lightning-induced over-voltages. Accordingly, the training of the Gaussian process regression model is carried out using lightning-induced over-voltages obtained from two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain technique for both first and the subsequent strokes. The estimation accuracy of model is appraised using root mean squared error indicating that the exponential kernel function has the least error than other kernel types for describing the covariance. The predictive performance is evaluated by corroborating the predictions from the model against the random test cases generated from two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain technique. We study network pruning which aims to remove redundant channels/kernels and hence speed up the inference of deep networks. Existing pruning methods either train from scratch with sparsity constraints or minimize the reconstruction error between the feature maps of the pre-trained models and the compressed ones. Both strategies suffer from some limitations: the former kind is computationally expensive and difficult to converge, while the latter kind optimizes the reconstruction error but ignores the discriminative power of channels. In this paper, we propose a simple-yet-effective method called discrimination-aware channel pruning (DCP) to choose the channels that actually contribute to the discriminative power. To this end, we first introduce additional discrimination-aware losses into the network to increase the discriminative power of the intermediate layers. Next, we select the most discriminative channels for each layer by considering the discrimination-aware loss and the reconstruction error, simultaneously. We then formulate channel pruning as a sparsity-inducing optimization problem with a convex objective and propose a greedy algorithm to solve the resultant problem. Note that a channel (3D tensor) often consists of a set of kernels (each with a 2D matrix). Besides the redundancy in channels, some kernels in a channel may also be redundant and fail to contribute to the discriminative power of the network, resulting in kernel level redundancy. To solve this issue, we propose a discrimination-aware kernel pruning (DKP) method to further compress deep networks by removing redundant kernels. To avoid manually determining the pruning rate for each layer, we propose two adaptive stopping conditions to automatically determine the number of selected channels/kernels. The proposed adaptive stopping conditions tend to yield more efficient models with better performance in practice. Extensive experiments on both image classification and face recognition demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods. For example, on ILSVRC-12, the resultant ResNet-50 model with 30 percent reduction of channels even outperforms the baseline model by 0.36 percent in terms of Top-1 accuracy. We also deploy the pruned models on a smartphone (equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor). The pruned MobileNetV1 and MobileNetV2 achieve 1.93× and 1.42× inference acceleration on the mobile device, respectively, with negligible performance degradation. Remarkable achievements have been obtained by deep neural networks in the last several years. However, the breakthrough in neural networks accuracy is always accompanied by explosive growth of computation and parameters, which leads to a severe limitation of model deployment. In this paper, we propose a novel knowledge distillation technique named self-distillation to address this problem. Self-distillation attaches several attention modules and shallow classifiers at different depths of neural networks and distills knowledge from the deepest classifier to the shallower classifiers. Different from the conventional knowledge distillation methods where the knowledge of the teacher model is transferred to another student model, self-distillation can be considered as knowledge transfer in the same model - from the deeper layers to the shallow layers. Moreover, the additional classifiers in self-distillation allow the neural network to work in a dynamic manner, which leads to a much higher acceleration. Experiments demonstrate that self-distillation has consistent and significant effectiveness on various neural networks and datasets. On average, 3.49 and 2.32 percent accuracy boost are observed on CIFAR100 and ImageNet. Millimeter wave (mmW) is being deployed in hotspot scenarios for providing high bandwidths. However, the coverage of mmW cell is limited due to the rapid attenuation during the propagation and sensitivity to blockage by obstacles. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic programming approach for automated dimensioning and appropriate placement of mmW small cells (SCs) in dense urban under the constraints of coverage and budget. Being cognizant of the blockage by city buildings, a fast search algorithm based on vector is introduced to enable most line-of-sight (LOS) communication links between base stations (BSs) and mobile stations (MSs). The analysis of time complexity is also derived in closed forms. The evaluation of our approach was carried out in both hypothetic and realistic scenarios. Roadside units (RSUs), which have strong computing capability and are close to vehicle nodes, have been widely used to process delay- and computation-intensive tasks of vehicle nodes. However, due to their high mobility, vehicles may drive out of the coverage of RSUs before receiving the task processing results. In this paper, we propose a mobile edge computing-assisted vehicular network, where vehicles can offload their tasks to a nearby vehicle via a vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) link or a nearby RSU via a vehicle-to-infrastructure link. These tasks are also migrated by a V2V link or an infrastructure-to-infrastructure (I2I) link to avoid the scenario where the vehicles cannot receive the processed task from the RSUs. Considering mutual interference from the same link of offloading tasks and migrating tasks, we construct a vehicle offloading decision-based game to minimize the computation overhead. We prove that the game can always achieve Nash equilibrium and convergence by exploiting the finite improvement property. We then propose a task migration (TM) algorithm that includes three task-processing methods and two task-migration methods. Based on the TM algorithm, computation overhead minimization offloading (COMO) algorithm is presented. This paper investigates the multi-part collaborative task offloading with multiple servers in mobile edge computing (MEC) systems by considering server overload and long-term system performance. Our goal is to achieve the optimal user experience within the range of the network operator’s affordable cost. To this end, we design a two-layer computation offloading framework based on the multi-part offloading mode and the collaborations among small cell base station (SBS) servers. Furthermore, a multi-object constrained optimization problem is formulated, which jointly optimizes user association, channel allocation, and multi-part collaborative task offloading. To solve this problem, we propose a Genetic and Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (GADDPG)-based computation offloading scheme, where the long-term system performance is considered. Numerical and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed GADDPG-based computation offloading scheme outperforms other methods in effectively solving the server overload and guarantees long-term system performances while ensuring the best user experience. The optimization of the energy management of modern hybrid-electric or fully electric race cars for minimum lap time requires a description of the vehicle dynamics performance envelope, that is, of the tires’ grip limit in corners, braking zones and during acceleration. In this paper, we present a computationally efficient performance envelope model in the form of convex constraints on the achievable longitudinal and lateral acceleration, on the assumption that the path on the track is given. The proposed acceleration limits are modeled velocity-dependent to take into account the effect of aerodynamic downforce present in many circuit race cars. The formulation as linear equality, inequality and second-order cone constraints allows to embed the model in a convex energy management optimization framework. To showcase the approach, we identify the model with data obtained from a state-of-the-art hybrid-electric Formula 1 car and present results for the Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps circuits. The optimal energy management strategies can be evaluated with a computational time of less than 1 s. The optimal velocity profile subject to the performance envelope constraints is close to the measured one. The good agreement between the optimal solution and the measurement data shows that the proposed model captures the vehicle dynamics accurately enough for the purposes of energy management optimization. For many applications envisioned for the Internet of Things (IoT), it is expected that the sensors will have very low costs and zero power, which can be satisfied by meta-material sensor based IoT, i.e., meta-IoT. As their constituent meta-materials can reflect wireless signals with environment-sensitive reflection coefficients, meta-IoT sensors can achieve simultaneous sensing and transmission without any active modulation. However, to maximize the sensing accuracy, the structures of meta-IoT sensors need to be optimized considering their joint influence on sensing and transmission, which is challenging due to the high computational complexity in evaluating the influence, especially given a large number of sensors. In this paper, we propose a joint sensing and transmission design method for meta-IoT systems with a large number of meta-IoT sensors, which can efficiently optimize the sensing accuracy of the system. Specifically, a computationally efficient received signal model is established to evaluate the joint influence of meta-material structure on sensing and transmission. Then, a sensing algorithm based on deep unsupervised learning is designed to obtain accurate sensing results in a robust manner. Experiments with a prototype verify that the system has a higher sensitivity and a longer transmission range compared to existing designs, and can sense environmental anomalies correctly within 2 meters. Distributed computing has become one of the most important frameworks in dealing with large computation tasks. In this paper, we propose a systematic construction of coded computing schemes for MapReduce-type distributed systems. The construction builds upon placement delivery arrays (PDA), originally proposed by Yan et al. for coded caching schemes. The main contributions of our work are three-fold. First, we identify a class of PDAs, called Comp-PDAs, and show how to obtain a coded computing scheme from any Comp-PDA. We also characterize the normalized number of stored files (storage load), computed intermediate values (computation load), and communicated bits (communication load), of the obtained schemes in terms of the Comp-PDA parameters. Then, we show that the performance achieved by Comp-PDAs describing Maddah-Ali and Niesen’s coded caching schemes matches a new information-theoretic converse, thus establishing the fundamental region of all achievable performance triples. In particular, we characterize all the Comp-PDAs achieving the pareto-optimal storage, computation, and communication (SCC) loads of the fundamental region. Finally, we investigate the file complexity of the proposed schemes, i.e., the smallest number of files required for implementation. In particular, we describe Comp-PDAs that achieve pareto-optimal SCC triples with significantly lower file complexity than the originally proposed Comp-PDAs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, graph-based methods have been widely applied to model fitting. However, in these methods, association information is invariably lost when data points and model hypotheses are mapped to the graph domain. In this paper, we propose a novel model fitting method based on co-clustering on bipartite graphs (CBG) to estimate multiple model instances in data contaminated with outliers and noise. Model fitting is reformulated as a bipartite graph partition behavior. Specifically, we use a bipartite graph reduction technique to eliminate some insignificant vertices (outliers and invalid model hypotheses), thereby improving the reliability of the constructed bipartite graph and reducing the computational complexity. We then use a co-clustering algorithm to learn a structured optimal bipartite graph with exact connected components for partitioning that can directly estimate the model instances (i.e., post-processing steps are not required). The proposed method fully utilizes the duality of data points and model hypotheses on bipartite graphs, leading to superior fitting performance. Existing crowd counting designs usually exploit multi-branch structures to address the scale diversity problem. However, branches in these structures work in a competitive rather than collaborative way. In this paper, we focus on promoting collaboration between branches. Specifically, we propose an attention-guided collaborative counting module (AGCCM) comprising an attention-guided module (AGM) and a collaborative counting module (CCM). The CCM promotes collaboration among branches by recombining each branch’s output into an independent count and joint counts with other branches. The AGM capturing the global attention map through a transformer structure with a pair of foreground-background related loss functions can distinguish the advantages of different branches. The loss functions do not require additional labels and crowd division. In addition, we design two kinds of bidirectional transformers (Bi-Transformers) to decouple the global attention to row attention and column attention. The proposed Bi-Transformers are able to reduce the computational complexity and handle images in any resolution without cropping the image into small patches. Skeleton-based action recognition is widely used in varied areas, e.g., surveillance and human-machine interaction. Existing models are mainly learned in a supervised manner, thus heavily depending on large-scale labeled data, which could be infeasible when labels are prohibitively expensive. In this paper, we propose a novel Contrast-Reconstruction Representation Learning network (CRRL) that simultaneously captures postures and motion dynamics for unsupervised skeleton-based action recognition. It consists of three parts: Sequence Reconstructor (SER), Contrastive Motion Learner (CML), and Information Fuser (INF). SER learns representation from skeleton coordinate sequence via reconstruction. However the learned representation tends to focus on trivial postural coordinates and be hesitant in motion learning. To enhance the learning of motions, CML performs contrastive learning between the representation learned from coordinate sequences and additional velocity sequences, respectively. Finally, in the INF module, we explore varied strategies to combine SER and CML, and propose to couple postures and motions via a knowledge-distillation based fusion strategy which transfers the motion learning from CML to SER. Experimental results on several benchmarks, i.e., NTU RGB+D 60/120, PKU-MMD, CMU, and NW-UCLA, demonstrate the promise of the our method by outperforming state-of-the-art approaches. Domain adaptation is to transfer the shared knowledge learned from the source domain to a new environment, i.e., target domain. One common practice is to train the model on both labeled source-domain data and unlabeled target-domain data. Yet the learned models are usually biased due to the strong supervision of the source domain. Most researchers adopt the early-stopping strategy to prevent over-fitting, but when to stop training remains a challenging problem since the lack of the target-domain validation set. In this paper, we propose one efficient bootstrapping method, called Adaboost Student, explicitly learning complementary models during training and liberating users from empirical early stopping. Adaboost Student combines deep model learning with the conventional training strategy, i.e., adaptive boosting, and enables interactions between learned models and the data sampler. We adopt one adaptive data sampler to progressively facilitate learning on hard samples and aggregate “weak” models to prevent over-fitting. Extensive experiments show that (1) Without the need to worry about the stopping time, AdaBoost Student provides one robust solution by efficient complementary model learning during training. (2) AdaBoost Student is orthogonal to most domain adaptation methods, which can be combined with existing approaches to further improve the state-of-the-art performance. Video captioning targets interpreting the complex visual contents as text descriptions, which requires the model to fully understand video scenes including objects and their interactions. Prevailing methods adopt off-the-shelf object detection networks to give object proposals and use the attention mechanism to model the relations between objects. They often miss some undefined semantic concepts of the pretrained model and fail to identify exact predicate relationships between objects. In this paper, we investigate an open research task of generating text descriptions for the given videos, and propose Cross-Modal Graph (CMG) with meta concepts for video captioning. Specifically, to cover the useful semantic concepts in video captions, we weakly learn the corresponding visual regions for text descriptions, where the associated visual regions and textual words are named cross-modal meta concepts. We further build meta concept graphs dynamically with the learned cross-modal meta concepts. We also construct holistic video-level and local frame-level video graphs with the predicted predicates to model video sequence structures. In this paper, we address the Online Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (OUDA) problem and propose a novel multi-stage framework to solve real-world situations when the target data are unlabeled and arriving online sequentially in batches. Most of the traditional manifold-based methods on the OUDA problem focus on transforming each arriving target data to the source domain without sufficiently considering the temporal coherency and accumulative statistics among the arriving target data. In order to project the data from the source and the target domains to a common subspace and manipulate the projected data in real-time, our proposed framework institutes a novel method, called an Incremental Computation of Mean-Subspace (ICMS) technique, which computes an approximation of mean-target subspace on a Grassmann manifold and is proven to be a close approximate to the Karcher mean. Furthermore, the transformation matrix computed from the mean-target subspace is applied to the next target data in the recursive-feedback stage, aligning the target data closer to the source domain. The computation of transformation matrix and the prediction of next-target subspace leverage the performance of the recursive-feedback stage by considering the cumulative temporal dependency among the flow of the target subspace on the Grassmann manifold. The labels of the transformed target data are predicted by the pre-trained source classifier, then the classifier is updated by the transformed data and predicted labels. Extensive experiments on six datasets were conducted to investigate in depth the effect and contribution of each stage in our proposed framework and its performance over previous approaches in terms of classification accuracy and computational speed. In addition, the experiments on traditional manifold-based learning models and neural-network-based learning models demonstrated the applicability of our proposed framework for various types of learning models. We consider the problem of obtaining image quality representations in a self-supervised manner. We use prediction of distortion type and degree as an auxiliary task to learn features from an unlabeled image dataset containing a mixture of synthetic and realistic distortions. We then train a deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) using a contrastive pairwise objective to solve the auxiliary problem. We refer to the proposed training framework and resulting deep IQA model as the CONTRastive Image QUality Evaluator (CONTRIQUE). During evaluation, the CNN weights are frozen and a linear regressor maps the learned representations to quality scores in a No-Reference (NR) setting. We show through extensive experiments that CONTRIQUE achieves competitive performance when compared to state-of-the-art NR image quality models, even without any additional fine-tuning of the CNN backbone. The learned representations are highly robust and generalize well across images afflicted by either synthetic or authentic distortions. Our results suggest that powerful quality representations with perceptual relevance can be obtained without requiring large labeled subjective image quality datasets. Point cloud (PC) is a collection of discrete geometric samples of a physical object in 3D space. A PC video consists of temporal frames evenly spaced in time, each containing a static PC at one time instant. PCs in adjacent frames typically do not have point-to-point (P2P) correspondence, and thus exploiting temporal redundancy for PC restoration across frames is difficult. In this paper, we focus on the super-resolution (SR) problem for PC video: increase point density of PCs in video frames while preserving salient geometric features consistently across time. We accomplish this with two ideas. First, we establish partial P2P coupling between PCs of adjacent frames by interpolating interior points in a low-resolution PC patch in frame $t$ and translating them to a corresponding patch in frame $t+1$ , via a motion model computed by iterative closest point (ICP). Second, we promote piecewise smoothness in 3D geometry in each patch using feature graph Laplacian regularizer (FGLR) in an easily computable quadratic form. The two ideas translate to an unconstrained quadratic programming (QP) problem with a system of linear equations as solution—one where we ensure the numerical stability by upper-bounding the condition number of the coefficient matrix. Finally, to improve the accuracy of the ICP motion model, we re-sample points in a super-resolved patch at time $t$ to better match a low-resolution patch at time $t+1$ via bipartite graph matching after each SR iteration. Experimental results show temporally consistent super-resolved PC videos generated by our scheme, outperforming SR competitors that optimized on a per-frame basis, in two established PC metrics. Most video-based person re-identification (re-id) methods only focus on appearance features but neglect motion features. In fact, motion features can help to distinguish the target persons that are hard to be identified only by appearance features. However, most existing temporal information modeling methods cannot extract motion features effectively or efficiently for v ideo-based re-id. In this paper, we propose a more efficient Motion Feature Aggregation (MFA) method to model and aggregate motion information in the feature map level for video-based re-id. The proposed MFA consists of (i) a coarse-grained motion learning module, which extracts coarse-grained motion features based on the position changes of body parts over time, and (ii) a fine-grained motion learning module, which extracts fine-grained motion features based on the appearance changes of body parts over time. These two modules can model motion information from different granularities and are complementary to each other. It is easy to combine the proposed method with existing network architectures for end-to-end training. Extensive experiments on four widely used datasets demonstrate that the motion features extracted by MFA are crucial complements to appearance features for video-based re-id, especially for the scenario with large appearance changes. Besides, the results on LS-VID, the current largest publicly available video-based re-id dataset, surpass the state-of-the-art methods by a large margin. The success of current deep saliency models heavily depends on large amounts of annotated human fixation data to fit the highly non-linear mapping between the stimuli and visual saliency. Such fully supervised data-driven approaches are annotation-intensive and often fail to consider the underlying mechanisms of visual attention. In contrast, in this paper, we introduce a model based on various cognitive theories of visual saliency, which learns visual attention patterns in a weakly supervised manner. Our approach incorporates insights from cognitive science as differentiable submodules, resulting in a unified, end-to-end trainable framework. Specifically, our model encapsulates the following important components motivated from biological vision. (a) As scene semantics are closely related to visually attentive regions, our model encodes discriminative spatial information for scene understanding through spatial visual semantics embedding. (b) To model the objectness factors in visual attention deployment, we incorporate object-level semantics embedding and object relation information. (c) Considering the “winner-take-all” mechanism in visual stimuli processing, we model the competition mechanism among objects with softmax based neural attention. (d) Lastly, a conditional center prior is learned to mimic the spatial distribution bias of visual attention. Furthermore, we propose novel loss functions to utilize supervision cues from image-level semantics, saliency prior knowledge, and self-information compression. Experiments show that our method achieves promising results, and even outperforms many of its fully supervised counterparts. Overall, our weakly supervised saliency method makes an essential step towards reducing the annotation budget of current approaches, as well as providing a more comprehensive understanding of the visual attention mechanism. The Normalized Cut (NCut) model is a popular graph-based model for image segmentation. But it suffers from the excessive normalization problem and weakens the small object and twig segmentation. In this paper, we propose an Explored Normalized Cut (ENCut) model that establishes a balance graph model by adopting a meaningful-loop and a k-step random walk, which reduces the energy of small salient region, so as to enhance the small object segmentation. To improve the twig segmentation, our ENCut model is further enhanced by a new Random Walk Refining Term (RWRT) that adds local attention to our model with the help of an un-supervising random walk. Finally, a move-making based strategy is developed to efficiently solve the ENCut model with RWRT. Tubular structure tracking is a crucial task in the fields of computer vision and medical image analysis. The minimal paths-based approaches have exhibited their strong ability in tracing tubular structures, by which a tubular structure can be naturally modeled as a minimal geodesic path computed with a suitable geodesic metric. However, existing minimal paths-based tracing approaches still suffer from difficulties such as the shortcuts and short branches combination problems, especially when dealing with the images involving complicated tubular tree structures or background. In this paper, we introduce a new minimal paths-based model for minimally interactive tubular structure centerline extraction in conjunction with a perceptual grouping scheme. Basically, we take into account the prescribed tubular trajectories and curvature-penalized geodesic paths to seek suitable shortest paths. The proposed approach can benefit from the local smoothness prior on tubular structures and the global optimality of the used graph-based path searching scheme. Deconvolutional networks have attracted extensive attention and have been successfully applied in the field of computer vision. In this paper we propose a novel two-branch deconvolutional network (TBDN) that can improve the performance of conventional deconvolutional networks and reduce the computational complexity. A feasible iterative algorithm is designed to solve the optimization problem for the TBDN model, and a theoretical analysis of the convergence and computational complexity for the algorithm is also provided. The application of the TBDN in stereo matching is presented by constructing a disparity estimation network. Recent studies have pointed out that many well-developed Visual Question Answering (VQA) models are heavily affected by the language prior problem. It refers to making predictions based on the co-occurrence pattern between textual questions and answers instead of reasoning upon visual contents. To tackle this problem, most existing methods focus on strengthening the visual feature learning capability to reduce this text shortcut influence on model decisions. However, few efforts have been devoted to analyzing its inherent cause and providing an explicit interpretation. It thus lacks a good guidance for the research community to move forward in a purposeful way, resulting in model construction perplexity towards overcoming this non-trivial problem. In this paper, we propose to interpret the language prior problem in VQA from a class-imbalance view. Concretely, we design a novel interpretation scheme whereby the loss of mis-predicted frequent and sparse answers from the same question type is distinctly exhibited during the late training phase. It explicitly reveals why the VQA model tends to produce a frequent yet obviously wrong answer, to a given question whose right answer is sparse in the training set. Based upon this observation, we further propose a novel loss re-scaling approach to assign different weights to each answer according to the training data statistics for estimating the final loss. We apply our approach into six strong baselines and the experimental results on two VQA-CP benchmark datasets evidently demonstrate its effectiveness. Kernel methods have achieved tremendous success in the past two decades. In the current big data era, data collection has grown tremendously. However, existing kernel methods are not scalable enough both at the training and predicting steps. To address this challenge, in this paper, we first introduce a general sparse kernel learning formulation based on the random feature approximation, where the loss functions are possibly non-convex. In order to reduce the scale of random features required in experiment, we also use that formulation based on the orthogonal random feature approximation. Then we propose a new asynchronous parallel doubly stochastic algorithm for large scale sparse kernel learning (AsyDSSKL). To the best our knowledge, AsyDSSKL is the first algorithm with the techniques of asynchronous parallel computation and doubly stochastic optimization. We also provide a comprehensive convergence guarantee to AsyDSSKL. Importantly, the experimental results on various large-scale real-world datasets show that, our AsyDSSKL method has the significant superiority on the computational efficiency at the training and predicting steps over the existing kernel methods. False data injection attack (FDIA) is a major threat in wide-area monitoring systems. Being able to differentiate FDIA from normal grid contingencies is a paramount necessity for a grid operator to decide the correct response on a critical prompt basis as well as reduce the overall FDIA's false alarms. Two FDIA's characterization algorithms are developed in this paper. The first is based on the principal component analysis (PCA) while the second is based on the canonical correlation analysis (CCA). Both algorithms are developed in an online platform to reduce the computational complexity. The various designed test cases demonstrate a promising FDIA characterization performance utilizing both algorithms. The testing results of three machine learning-based classifiers indicate that the proposed FDIA's characterization algorithms provide better classification models than conventional PCA-based characterization algorithm with CCA illustrating advanced characterization and detection results. The increase in distributed energy resources and flexible electricity consumers has turned TSO-DSO coordination strategies into a challenging problem. Existing decomposition/decentralized methods apply divide-and-conquer strategies to trim down the computational burden of this complex problem, but rely on access to proprietary information or fail-safe real-time communication infrastructures. To overcome these drawbacks, we propose in this paper a TSO-DSO coordination strategy that only needs a series of observations of the nodal price and the power intake at the substations connecting the transmission and distribution networks. Using this information, we learn the price response of active distribution networks (DN) using a decreasing step-wise function that can also adapt to some contextual information. The learning task can be carried out in a computationally efficient manner and the curve it produces can be interpreted as a market bid, thus averting the need to revise the current operational procedures for the transmission network. Inaccuracies derived from the learning task may lead to suboptimal decisions. However, results from a realistic case study show that the proposed methodology yields operating decisions very close to those obtained by a fully centralized coordination of transmission and distribution. A new method for the stability assessment of inverter-based microgrids is presented in this paper. Directly determining stability boundaries by searching the multidimensional space of inverters’ droop gains is a computationally prohibitive task. Instead, we build a certified stability region by utilizing a generalized Laplacian matrix eigenvalues, which are a measure of proximity to stability boundary. We establish an upper threshold for the eigenvalues that determines the stability boundary of the entire system and demonstrate that this value depends only on the network’s R/X ratio but does not depend on the grid topology. We also provide a conservative upper threshold of the eigenvalues that are universal for any systems within a reasonable range of R/X ratios. We then construct approximate certified stability regions representing convex sets in the multidimensional space of droop gains that could be utilized for gains optimization. We show how the certified stability region can be maximized by properly choosing droop gains, and we provide closed-form analytic expressions for the certified stability regions. The computational complexity of our method is almost independent of the number of inverters. The proposed methodology has been tested using IEEE 123 node test system with 10 inverters. A rapid deployment of renewable generation has led to significant reduction in the rotational system inertia and damping, thus making frequency control in power systems more challenging. This paper proposes a novel control scheme based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) for converter-interfaced generators operating in a grid-forming mode, with the goal of exploiting their fast response capabilities to provide fast frequency control service to the system. The controller manipulates converter power injections to limit the frequency nadir and rate-of-change-of-frequency after a disturbance. Both centralized and decentralized MPC approaches are considered and compared in terms of performance and practical implementation. Special attention is given to the decentralized controller by generating an explicit MPC solution to enhance computational efficiency and reduce hardware requirements. Transfer learning, which utilizes labeled source domains to facilitate the learning in a target model, is effective in alleviating high intra- and inter-subject variations in electroencephalogram (EEG) based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). Existing transfer learning approaches usually use the source subjects’ EEG data directly, leading to privacy concerns. This paper considers a decentralized privacy-preserving transfer learning scenario: there are multiple source subjects, whose data and computations are kept local, and only the parameters or predictions of their pre-trained models can be accessed for privacy-protection; then, how to perform effective cross-subject transfer for a new subject with unlabeled EEG trials? We propose an offline unsupervised multi-source decentralized transfer (MSDT) approach, which first generates a pre-trained model from each source subject, and then performs decentralized transfer using the source model parameters (in gray-box settings) or predictions (in black-box settings). Experiments on two datasets from two BCI paradigms, motor imagery and affective BCI, demonstrated that MSDT outperformed several existing approaches, which do not consider privacy-protection at all. In the cooperative vehicle infrastructure system, the road side unit (RSU) equipped with a mobile edge computing (MEC) server and sensors could provide vehicle infrastructure cooperation services for vehicles, such as optimization and cooperative driving, enhanced visibility, and so on. In view of this, the MEC server needs to fuse the sensing information from sensors on the vehicles and RSU, respectively. In the case of bad channel conditions, uploading the raw sensing information from the vehicles results in high uplink transmission latency. To deal with it, the vehicles can process the information locally and just deliver the results to the RSU. However, due to the limited computing resources on the vehicles, the processing accuracy of the raw information on the vehicles is lower than that on the MEC server. Besides, processing locally leads to higher vehicle energy consumption. Thus, in this paper, we aim to jointly optimize execution latency, processing accuracy, and energy consumption of the MEC-based cooperative vehicle infrastructure system. Firstly, we design the terminal machine learning task model and the edge machine learning task model on the vehicle side and RSU side, respectively. Then, we formulate a long-term multi-objective optimization problem. Owing to the stochastic traffic and time-varying communication conditions, we reformulate it as a Markov decision process and propose a two-stage deep reinforcement learning-based offloading and resource allocation (TDORA) strategy to determine the task offloading and the transmit power of each vehicle. This paper presents a multi-user, multi-class and multi-layer edge computing-based framework for effective task offloading and computation processes. Important system requirements that were not captured in the existing multi-layer solutions such as offloading, computations and deadline requirements were captured in the system modeling, while both wireless communications and task computation constraints were considered. We considered three layers system, where each device offloads its generated tasks in each time slot to any selected layer for computation. On its arrival at such a selected layer, the task is only accepted if the queue size is below the pre-defined threshold, otherwise, such a task is offloaded to the next layer. Tasks were classified into class 1 and class 2 tasks following tasks’ quality of service requirements. We adopted stochastic geometry, parallel computing and queueing theory techniques to model the performance of the considered integrated edge-fog-cloud computing environment and obtained analysis for various performance metrics of interest. The obtained analyses demonstrate the importance of multi-layer and multi-class edge computing systems towards improving the experience of both delay-sensitive and mission-critical applications in any task offloading environment. Due to the gap between calculation-intensive and latency-sensitive features of self-driving tasks and the vehicle's limited computation and storage resources, the development of autonomous vehicles is situated in a bottleneck. Fortunately, multi-access edge computing (MEC) architecture offers a promising measure to bridge this gap. It brings resources proximity to mobile devices at the network edge to support task offloading. Nonetheless, it introduces the problem of insecure wireless communication. Beyond that, the autonomous vehicle also has strict requirements on latency and energy consumption of task offloading technique owing to its safety-related and electricity-driven characteristics. Many scholars have studied the related problems widely. Nevertheless, few papers combine these three significant factors, namely information security, task latency and energy consumption. Thus, we put forward a mobility-ware task offloading scheme in cellular vehicle-to-everything system, which carefully considers these three requirements together. In this scheme, a time approximation algorithm is proposed to tackle the channel condition variations caused by the vehicle movement. Small-cell base station proactively sends artificial noise to debase wiretapper decoding capability and further prevent data exchanged between vehicles and MEC from being eavesdropped at the physical layer. Moreover, the optimal offloading proportion is found to minimize the weighted sum of latency and energy consumption. An emerging computational paradigm, named federated edge learning (FEL), enables intelligent computing at the network edge with the feature of preserving data privacy for edge devices. Given their constrained resources, it becomes a great challenge to achieve high execution performance for FEL. Most of the state-of-the-arts concentrate on enhancing FEL from the perspective of system operation procedures, taking few precautions during the composition step of the FEL system. Though a few recent studies recognize the importance of FEL formation and propose server-centric device selection schemes, the impact of data sizes is largely overlooked. In this paper, we take advantage of game theory to depict the decision dilemma among edge devices regarding whether to participate in FEL or not given their heterogeneous sizes of local datasets. For realizing both the individual and global optimization, the server is employed to solve the participation dilemma, which requires accurate information collection for devices’ local datasets. Hence, we utilize mechanism design to enable truthful information solicitation. With the help of correlated equilibrium, we derive a decision making strategy for devices from the global perspective, which can achieve the long-term stability and efficacy of FEL. For scalability consideration, we optimize the computational complexity of the basic solution to the polynomial level. Lastly, extensive experiments based on both real and synthetic data are conducted to evaluate our proposed mechanisms, with experimental results demonstrating the performance advantages. Objective: Computational modeling is increasingly used to design charging systems for implanted medical devices. The design of these systems must often satisfy conflicting requirements, such as charging speed, specific absorption rate (SAR) and coil size. Fast electromagnetic solvers are pivotal for enabling multi-criteria optimization. In this paper, we present an analytical model based on the quasi-static approximation as a fast, yet sufficiently accurate tool for optimizing inductive charging systems. Methods: The approximate model was benchmarked against full-wave simulations to validate accuracy and improvement in computation time. The coupling factor of two test coils was measured for lateral and axial displacements and the SAR was measured experimentally in a PAA phantom. Results: The approximate model takes only 11 seconds to compute a single iteration, while the full-wave model takes 5 hours to compute the same case. The maximum difference with full-wave simulations was less than 24% and the mean difference less than 2%. Adding a novel figure of merit into the multi-criterion optimization resulted in a 16% higher charging speed. The measured results of the SAR and coupling factor are within a 5 mm coil offset margin. Conclusion: The proposed approximate model succeeds as a rapid prototyping tool, enabling fast and sufficiently accurate optimization for wireless charging systems. Significance: The approximate model is the first of its kind to compute both the coupling factor and the SAR near conducting structures fast enough to enable optimization of charging speed. There is a growing interest in neuromorphic hardware since it offers a more intuitive way to achieve bio-inspired algorithms. This paper presents a neuromorphic model for intelligently processing continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) signal. This model aims to develop a hardware-based signal processing model and avoid employing digitally intensive operations, such as signal segmentation and feature extraction, which are not desired in an analogue neuromorphic system. We apply delay-based reservoir computing as the information processing core, along with a novel training and labelling method. Different from the conventional ECG classification techniques, this computation model is a end-to-end dynamic system that mimics the real-time signal flow in neuromorphic hardware. The input is the raw ECG stream, while the amplitude of the output represents the risk factor of a ventricular ectopic heartbeat. The intrinsic memristive property of the reservoir empowers the system to retain the historical ECG information for high-dimensional mapping. This model was evaluated with the MIT-BIH database under the inter-patient paradigm and yields 81% sensitivity and 98% accuracy. Under this architecture, the minimum size of memory required in the inference process can be as low as 3.1 MegaByte(MB) because the majority of the computation takes place in the analogue domain. Learning generative probabilistic models is a core problem in machine learning, which presents significant challenges due to the curse of dimensionality. This paper proposes a joint dimensionality reduction and non-parametric density estimation framework, using a novel estimator that can explicitly capture the underlying distribution of appropriate reduced-dimension representations of the input data. The idea is to jointly design a nonlinear dimensionality reducing auto-encoder to model the training data in terms of a parsimonious set of latent random variables, and learn a canonical low-rank tensor model of the joint distribution of the latent variables in the Fourier domain. The proposed latent density model is non-parametric and “universal,” as opposed to the predefined prior that is assumed in variational auto-encoders. Joint optimization of the auto-encoder and the latent density estimator is pursued via a formulation which learns both by minimizing a combination of the negative log-likelihood in the latent domain and the auto-encoder reconstruction loss. A noise-suppressing low-light image enhancement approach is proposed in this paper based on the extent of exposedness at each image pixel. To this end, a progressive, structure-aware exposedness estimation procedure is presented that quantifies local and global exposedness. These exposedness values are leveraged to produce a locally smooth pixel-level map that signifies the required degrees of enhancement at image pixels. This map is subsequently used in an enhancement function, which satisfies a few important properties, to generate the enhanced image. Before the enhancement, inherent noise in the low-light image is diminished employing a detail-preserving, low gradient magnitude suppression method. Subjective and quantitative analysis of results on a wide variety of natural and synthetically generated low-light images from standard databases using PSNR, iRSE, SSIM, and measures of perceptual quality, natural image statistics and brightness preservation suggests that our approach in general outperforms the state-of-the-art. For neural network (NN) applications at the edge of AI, computing-in-memory (CIM) demonstrates promising energy efficiency. However, when the network size grows while fulfilling the accuracy requirements of increasingly complicated application scenarios, significant memory consumption becomes an issue. Model pruning is a typical compression approach for solving this problem, but it does not fully exploit the energy efficiency advantage of conventional CIMs, because of the dynamic distribution of sparse weights and the increased data movement energy consumption of reading sparsity indexes from outside the chip. Therefore, we propose a vector-wise dynamic-sparsity controlling and computing in-memory structure (DS-CIM) that accomplishes both sparsity control and computation of weights in SRAM, to improve the energy efficiency of the vector-wise sparse pruning model. Implemented in a 65 nm CMOS process, the measurement results show that the proposed DS-CIM macro can save up to 50.4% of computational energy consumption, while ensuring the accuracy of vector-wise pruning models. The test chip can also achieve 87.88% accuracy on the CIFAR-10 dataset at 4-bit precision in inputs and weights, and it achieves 530.2TOPS/W (normalized to 1 bit) energy efficiency. This paper provides an end-to-end latency model of real-time generated live videos composed of sub-models of capturing, encoding, network, decoding, rendering, and display refreshing. We build the model by deeply analyzing each sub part’s latency with parameters like video’s Spatial (frame scale $s$), Temporal (frame rate $t$), Amplitude (quantization step-size $q$) Resolutions (STAR), Compressed Frame Bit Numbers ($n_{F}$), and other necessary parameters. The latency of 640 combinations of STAR for eight representative video sequences is measured to fit accurate models. We primarily focus on processing procedures, whose latency is becoming the principal affection, as network latency decreases due to the its development. We then introduce a baseline video sequence set to reduce the complexity when fitting the encoding and decoding sub-models by predicting the model parameters on new hardware from parameters of a known one, and improve models’ robustness crossing different scenarios. These sub-models correlate well with the realistic latency data, with the average Pearson Correlation Coefficient (PCC) of 0.99 and the average Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient (SRCC) of 0.98, according to an independent validation test. Furthermore, we validate our end-to-end latency model in a simulated end-to-end live video transmission from generating to displaying, introducing the latency as a strict condition in adaptive bit-rate selection. Modular multilevel converters have become the technology of choice in high voltage direct current systems. They are composed of a large number of submodules, which poses significant computational challenges to electromagnetic transient simulations. To address this issue, scholars proposed several approaches that are a trade-off between simulation accuracy and computational burden, which mainly achieve numerical efficiency by adopting reduced and simplified models of the converter arm submodules. This paper proposes a different simulation paradigm based on sub-circuit isomorphism. It is suited for the analysis of intrinsically modular electronic circuits, as it exploits the common behavior of structurally identical submodules by clustering them together. This method does not require any simplification of the submodule electrical model and minimizes the number of equations to be solved at each time step of the time domain analysis, thereby significantly reducing the computational effort. Thus, this method is suitable for thorough simulations of ac/dc networks, which may require the implementation of detailed transistor-level representations of the converter submodules. Deep neural models, in recent years, have been successful in almost every field, even solving the most complex problem statements. However, these models are huge in size with millions (and even billions) of parameters, demanding heavy computation power and failing to be deployed on edge devices. Besides, the performance boost is highly dependent on redundant labeled data. To achieve faster speeds and to handle the problems caused by the lack of labeled data, knowledge distillation (KD) has been proposed to transfer information learned from one model to another. KD is often characterized by the so-called ‘Student-Teacher’ (S-T) learning framework and has been broadly applied in model compression and knowledge transfer. This paper is about KD and S-T learning, which are being actively studied in recent years. First, we aim to provide explanations of what KD is and how/why it works. Then, we provide a comprehensive survey on the recent progress of KD methods together with S-T frameworks typically used for vision tasks. In general, we investigate some fundamental questions that have been driving this research area and thoroughly generalize the research progress and technical details. Additionally, we systematically analyze the research status of KD in vision applications. As an essential problem in computer vision, salient object detection (SOD) has attracted an increasing amount of research attention over the years. Recent advances in SOD are predominantly led by deep learning-based solutions (named deep SOD). To enable in-depth understanding of deep SOD, in this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey covering various aspects, ranging from algorithm taxonomy to unsolved issues. In particular, we first review deep SOD algorithms from different perspectives, including network architecture, level of supervision, learning paradigm, and object-/instance-level detection. Following that, we summarize and analyze existing SOD datasets and evaluation metrics. Then, we benchmark a large group of representative SOD models, and provide detailed analyses of the comparison results. Moreover, we study the performance of SOD algorithms under different attribute settings, which has not been thoroughly explored previously, by constructing a novel SOD dataset with rich attribute annotations covering various salient object types, challenging factors, and scene categories. We further analyze, for the first time in the field, the robustness of SOD models to random input perturbations and adversarial attacks. We also look into the generalization and difficulty of existing SOD datasets. Finally, we discuss several open issues of SOD and outline future research directions. This paper addresses the problem of instance-level 6DoF object pose estimation from a single RGB image. Many recent works have shown that a two-stage approach, which first detects keypoints and then solves a Perspective-n-Point (PnP) problem for pose estimation, achieves remarkable performance. However, most of these methods only localize a set of sparse keypoints by regressing their image coordinates or heatmaps, which are sensitive to occlusion and truncation. Instead, we introduce a Pixel-wise Voting Network (PVNet) to regress pixel-wise vectors pointing to the keypoints and use these vectors to vote for keypoint locations. This creates a flexible representation for localizing occluded or truncated keypoints. Another important feature of this representation is that it provides uncertainties of keypoint locations that can be further leveraged by the PnP solver. Experiments show that the proposed approach outperforms the state of the art on the LINEMOD, Occluded LINEMOD, YCB-Video, and Tless datasets, while being efficient for real-time pose estimation. The ability to predict, anticipate and reason about future outcomes is a key component of intelligent decision-making systems. In light of the success of deep learning in computer vision, deep-learning-based video prediction emerged as a promising research direction. Defined as a self-supervised learning task, video prediction represents a suitable framework for representation learning, as it demonstrated potential capabilities for extracting meaningful representations of the underlying patterns in natural videos. Motivated by the increasing interest in this task, we provide a review on the deep learning methods for prediction in video sequences. We first define the video prediction fundamentals, as well as mandatory background concepts and the most used datasets. Next, we carefully analyze existing video prediction models organized according to a proposed taxonomy, highlighting their contributions and their significance in the field. The summary of the datasets and methods is accompanied with experimental results that facilitate the assessment of the state of the art on a quantitative basis. Machine learning can provide deep insights into data, allowing machines to make high-quality predictions and having been widely used in real-world applications, such as text mining, visual classification, and recommender systems. However, most sophisticated machine learning approaches suffer from huge time costs when operating on large-scale data. This issue calls for the need of Large-scale Machine Learning (LML), which aims to learn patterns from big data with comparable performance efficiently. In this paper, we offer a systematic survey on existing LML methods to provide a blueprint for the future developments of this area. We first divide these LML methods according to the ways of improving the scalability: 1) model simplification on computational complexities, 2) optimization approximation on computational efficiency, and 3) computation parallelism on computational capabilities. Then we categorize the methods in each perspective according to their targeted scenarios and introduce representative methods in line with intrinsic strategies. It is crucial to model missing ratings in recommender systems since user preferences learnt from only observed ratings are biased. One possible explanation for missing ratings is motivated by the spiral of silence theory. When the majority opinion is formed, a spiral process is triggered where users are more and more likely to show their ratings if they perceive that they are supported by the opinion climate. In this paper we first verify the existence of the spiral process in recommender systems by using a variety of different real-life datasets. We then study the characteristics of two key factors in the spiral process: opinion climate and the hardcore users who will give ratings even when they are minority opinion holders. Based on our empirical findings, we develop four variants to model missing ratings. They mimic different components of the spiral of silence based on the spiral process with global opinion climate, local opinion climate, hardcore users, relationships between hardcore users and items, respectively. The excavated information will become obsolete when the data changes in dynamic graphs. To compute the up-to-date results, the graph algorithm has to re-compute the entire data from scratch, which will consume huge computation time and resources. To reduce the cost of such calculations, this paper proposes a model called IncGraph to support incremental iterative computation over dynamic graphs. Different from the way of traditional iteration, IncGraph executes the graph algorithm through reusing the results of the previous graph and performs computation on the part of the graph that has changed. IncGraph has two critical components: (1) an incremental iterative computation model that consists of two steps: an incremental step to calculate the results on the changed vertices of the graph, and a merge step to calculate the results on the entire graph by using the results of the previous graph and the incremental step; and (2) an incremental update method to accelerate the iterative process within the iterative graph algorithm. We implement IncGraph model on GraphX and evaluate its performance by using several representative iterative graph algorithms: PageRank, Connected components, and Single Source Shortest Path. The results show that compared with the traditional iteration, when adding the 100k of vertices in different size data sets, the performance optimization ratio of IncGraph is 31.79 percent averagely, and 50.2 percent maximum; and when the percentage of added vertices varied from 0.01 to 10 percent in different data sets, the performance optimization ratio of IncGraph varied from 19.9 to 66.1 percent. Two types of nested orbit correctors are necessary for LHC upgrade, the so-called MCBXFA and MCBXFB. They share the same cross section, but feature different lengths, 2.5 and 1.5 m, respectively. The power tests performed on two MCBXFB prototypes showed excellent performance when individually powered, but training to reach the nominal torque in combined operation was very long. Moreover, memory was lost after torque direction reversal. A detailed analysis of the power test results concluded that the origin of the problem was insufficient support for the torque at the inner dipole coil ends. A fine tuning of the inner dipole design is proposed to improve the performance of both types of magnets.
