Satellite laser altimetry technology, a novel space remote sensing technique, actively acquires high-precision elevation information about the Earth's surface. However, the accuracy of laser altimetry can be compromised by alterations in the satellite-ground environment, thermal dynamics, and cosmic radiation. These factors may induce subtle variations in the installation and internal structure of the spaceborne laser altimeter on the satellite platform, diminishing measurement precision. In-orbit calibration is thus essential to enhancing the precision of laser altimetry. Through collaborative calculations between satellite and ground stations, we can derive correction parameters for laser pointing and ranging, substantially improving the accuracy of satellite laser altimetry. This paper introduces a sophisticated calibration method for laser altimeter pointing and ranging that utilizes dense control points. The approach interpolates discrete ground control point data into continuous simulated terrain using empirical Bayesian kriging, subsequently categorizing the data for either pointing or ranging calibration according to their respective functions. Following this, a series of calibration experiments are conducted, prioritizing "pointing" followed by "ranging" and continuing until the variation in the ranging calibration results falls below a predefined threshold. We employed experimental data from ground control points (GCPs) in Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia, China, to calibrate the GaoFen-7 (GF-7) satellite Beam 2 laser altimeter as per the outlined method. The calibration outcomes were then benchmarked against those gleaned from infrared laser detector calibration, revealing disparities of 1.12 s in the pointing angle and 2 cm in the ranging correction value. Post validation with ground control points, the measurement accuracy was refined to 0.15 m. The experiments confirm that the proposed calibration method offers accuracy comparable to that of infrared laser detector calibration and can facilitate the updating of 1:10,000 topographic maps utilizing stereo optical imagery. Furthermore, this method is more cost-effective and demands fewer personnel for ground control point collection, enhancing resource efficiency compared to traditional infrared laser detector calibration. The proposed approach surpasses terrain-matching limitations when calibrating laser ranging parameters and presents a viable solution for achieving frequent and high-precision in-orbit calibration of laser altimetry satellites. Groundwater is a primary freshwater resource for human consumption and an essential source for industry and agriculture. Therefore, understanding its spatial and temporal trends and drivers is crucial for governments to take appropriate measures to manage water resources. This paper uses Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite data and the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) to derive groundwater storage anomalies (GWSAs) and to analyze the spatial and temporal trends of GWSA in different regions of China (Xinjiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, North China Plain, South China, and Northeast China). It used groundwater-level observation data to verify the accuracy of GWSA estimates and analyzed the drivers of regional GWSA changes. The results showed that: (1) GWSA in South China increased at a rate of 4.79 mm/a from 2003 to 2016, and GWSA in other regions in China showed a decreasing trend. Among them, the decline rates of GWSA in Xinjiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, North China Plain, and Northeast China were −6.24 mm/a, −3.33 mm/a, −3.17 mm/a, −7.35 mm/a, and −0.75 mm/a, respectively. (2) The accuracy of the annual-scale GWSA estimates was improved after deducting gravity losses due to raw coal quality, and the correlation coefficient between GWSA and groundwater levels monitored by observation wells increased. (3) In Xinjiang, the annual water consumed by raw coal mining, industrial, and agricultural activities had a greater impact on GWSA than rainfall and temperature, so these human activities might be the main drivers of the continued GWSA decline in Xinjiang. Mapping functional zones for rural landscapes is the foundational work for rural land use planning and plays a very important role in the economic development and resource management utilization of rural areas. However, the traditional manual delineation of functional zone boundaries empirically in rural areas is labor-intensive, time-consuming, and lacks the consideration of spatial landscape patterns. The emergence of high-resolution remote sensing imagery and image segmentation has facilitated the analysis of ground landscape information and patterns, but there is still a lack of functional zone boundary mapping methods applicable to rural landscapes. To address this, we propose a functional zoning method called multiscale merging of landscape contextual and shape characteristics with heterogeneity indices (M2LHI) for mapping geographic boundaries for rural landscapes based on high-resolution remote sensing imagery. The landscape contextual features were first constructed based on the geospatial distances of landscape types, and then, the dominance index and shape index were introduced to quantify the landscape heterogeneity by object-oriented image analysis. Then, the automated merging of adjacent landscape units based on the thresholds of the landscape heterogeneity indices was performed to map the initial zones. The final rural functional zones were defined based on the main function in the zone. The study was carried out in three typical rural landscapes (hilly countryside, flat countryside, and grassland countryside) located in Fujian, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia, China, and the freely available Gaofen-2 (GF-2) satellite imagery was used as the data source. We compared the boundaries of mapped functional zones and reference functional zones, and the matching and inclusion ratios of the final functional zones mapped in each case were bigger than 78%, indicating that the M2LHI method has a high ability to map the functional spatial patterns. The overall accuracies of mapping functional zones with different functions were 95.9%, 89.0%, and 92.1% for the respective cases. The results demonstrated that the M2LHI method effectively quantifies landscape heterogeneity and accurately delineates functional zones with different landscape patterns. In this study, the spatiotemporal variations in CH4 concentrations in China from 2003 to 2021 are investigated, and their trends are forecasted over the next decade. Based on the seventh edition standard product retrieved by the atmospheric infrared detector (AIRS) at an altitude of 500 hPa, we verified monthly CH4 products using observational data provided by the World Data Center for Greenhouse Gases (WDCGG) from six ground stations in and around China. The correlation coefficients (R values) between the two data sets ranged from 0.68 to 0.92, signifying the ability of AIRS inversion data to represent temporal and spatial changes in surface CH4 concentrations. Additionally, China was classified into three regions (steps) based on terrain, and the changes in CH4 concentrations were assessed from three perspectives: spatial distribution, interannual variation, and seasonal variation. The results revealed that the CH4 concentration decreased with elevation along a topographic gradient, with high-value areas located in the first and second steps, corresponding to the eastern Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, northern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Over 19 years, the average increase in CH4 concentration has ranged from 65 to 175 ppb. In addition, the CH4 concentrations were higher during summer and autumn and lower during spring and winter. Finally, a SARIMA model was used to predict the near-surface CH4 concentration trend in China over the next ten years, which indicated a continued seasonal increase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ephedra species are beneficial for environmental protection in desert and grassland ecosystems. They have high ecological, medicinal, and economic value. To strengthen the protection of the sustainable development of Ephedra, we used occurrence records of Ephedra sinica Stapf., Ephedra intermedia Schrenk et C.A. Mey., and Ephedra equisetina Bge., combined with climate, soil, and topographic factors to simulate the suitable habitat of three Ephedra based on ensemble models on the Biomod2 platform. The results of the models were tested using AUC, TSS, and kappa coefficients. The results demonstrated that the ensemble model was able to accurately predict the potential distributions of E. sinica, E. intermedia, and E. equisetina. Eastern and central Inner Mongolia, middle and eastern Gansu, and northeastern Xinjiang were the optimum regions for the growth of E. sinica, E. intermedia, and E. equisetina, respectively. Additionally, several key environmental factors had a significant influence on the suitable habitats of the three Ephedra. The key factors affecting the distribution of E. sinica, E. intermedia, and E. equisetina were annual average precipitation, altitude, and vapor pressure, respectively. In conclusion, the results showed that the suitable ranges of the three Ephedra were mainly in Northwest China and that topography and climate were the primary influencing factors. Overgrazing is the key factor that has exacerbated grassland degradation in China's pastoral regions. Herder's grazing-based livestock production behavior becomes important to grassland conservation. Several formal environmental institutions and policies exist to improve grassland degradation; however, there remain contradicting conclusions regarding the contribution of these policies. Informal institutions become major instruments that might encourage herder's behavior on overgrazing. Using village rules and conventions (VRC) as a proxy for informal institutions, the article attempts to scrutinize whether the VRC emerge to respond to herders' willingness to reduce grazing intensity for grassland conservation and elicit factors affecting their reduction behavior using a Double-Hurdle model. Based on a survey of 193 respondents in Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang Autonomous regions of China, the empirical results provide evidence that VRC is effective in reducing herders' grazing intensity. In detail, the VRC in written form and an unchanging context within five years could significantly improve herders' willingness to reduce grazing intensity. Herders who consider the VRC as an important impact to their livestock production observe an increased reduction degree of grazing intensity. Additionally, variables referring to herder's education and religious belief play a significant role in the reduction degree of grazing intensity. High-speed railway (HSR) promote the efficient flow of the population and materials between cities and have profoundly affected urban economic development in China. However, there is currently limited research about how HSR influences urban expansion, especially related to the variable impacts on different urban agglomerations, different size cities, and the conversion of non-urban land to urban land. In this study, from two levels of regional heterogeneity and type heterogeneity, a multi-stage difference-in-differences (multi-stage DID) model and land use remote sensing data are used to investigate these research areas. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) The first opening of HSR had a more significant role in promoting urban expansion than HSR frequency, but several years after opening, HSR no longer promotes urban expansion. (2) The opening of HSR only played a significant role in promoting urban expansion in Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei. HSR frequency had a significant role in promoting urban expansion in the Yangtze River Delta. (3) The opening of HSR had no significant impact on urban expansion for different size cities, and HSR frequency only had a significant negative impact on urban expansion of small cities. (4) The first opening of HSR led to urban expansion dominated by the occupation of cultivated land. Cities in Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia mainly converted barren land and vegetation cover to urban land after the first opening of HSR. In northeast China, the first opening of HSR made the conversion of vegetation cover and cultivated land to urban land roughly equivalent in size. The results of this study are helpful to understand the impact of the first opening of HSR and the scale of conversion of different types of non-urban land into urban land on urban expansion.
