Typically, hydrological problems require approaches capable of describing and simulating part of the hydrological system, or the environmental consequences of natural or anthropic actions. Tools such as Multiagent System (MAS) and Rainfall-Runoff Model (RRM) have been used to help researchers to develop and better understand water systems. Thus, this study presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on the joint use of MAS and RRM tools, in the context of hydrological problems. SLR was performed based on a protocol defined from the research question. Initially, 79 papers were found among six bibliographic databases. This total was reduced over four stages of selection, according to exclusion criteria. In the end, three papers were considered satisfactory within the scope of the research, where they were summarized, analyzed, and compared. While the MAS and RRM tools can interact with their results in a coupled model, SLR showed that there are still major challenges to be explored concerning the dynamics between them, as the steps of scales and validation. Water resources management is a challenging task caused by huge uncertainties and complexities in hydrological processes and human activities. Over the last three decades, various scholars have carried out the study on hydrological simulation under complex conditions and quantitatively characterized the associated uncertainties for water resources systems. To keep abreast of the development of the collective knowledge in this field, a scientometric review and metasynthesis of the existing uncertainty analysis research for supporting hydrological modeling and water resources management has been conducted. A total of 2020 publications from 1991 to 2018 were acquired from the Web of Science. The scientific structure, cooperation, and frontiers of the related domain were explored using the science mapping software CiteSpace V5.4.R3. Through co–citation, collaboration, and co–occurrence network study, the results present the leading contributors among all countries and hotspots in the research domain. In addition, synthetical uncertainty management for hydrological models and water resource systems under climatic and land use change will continue to be focused on. This study comprehensively evaluates various aspects of uncertainty analysis in hydrologic simulation–optimization systems, showcasing advanced data analysis and artificial intelligence technologies. It focuses on current research frontiers, aiding decision–makers in better understanding and managing the complexity and uncertainties of water resource systems, thereby enhancing the sustainability and efficiency of responses to environmental changes. Climate change has an impact on water resources. Estimations of the variations in water balance under climate change variables are essential for managing and developing the water resource of a catchment. The current investigation evaluated the magnitude of the change in the water balance component of the Akaki catchment, Ethiopia, using the semi-distributed hydrological model, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), with the integration of the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment of Africa under RCP4.5 and 8.5. The SWAT model was developed using spatial and temporal data; it was calibrated (1991–2001) and validated (2002–2004) using SWAT-CUP. The statistical monthly SWAT model performance values of the NSE, PBIAS (%), and R2 showed good agreement between calibration and validation. On an annual basis, projected rainfall is expected to increase by 14.96%, 4.13%, 8.39%, and 10.39% in the 2040s under RCP4.5 and 8.5 and in the 2060s under RCP4.5 and 8.5, respectively, with inconsistent change on a monthly projections basis for each scenario. The projected monthly and yearly temperatures are expected to increase under different climate change scenarios. Annual evapotranspiration and potential evapotranspiration increased under both RCPs, whereas surface runoff, lateral flow, and water yield declined under the climate scenarios of each RCP. Monthly projected water yield showed a non-uniform change in the first 30 years and in the second years under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. These results show that the catchment is highly vulnerable to hydrological and agricultural drought due to water availability. The Cantareira Water Production System (CWPS), which supplies water to the most populous region in Brazil, is facing significant challenges due to hydroclimate change, thus threatening its water security. This research integrates data from climate models and field observations with hydrological modeling, aimed at quantifying trends in key variables of the hydrological cycle. The GFDL-CM4 climate model, the most suitable for the study area, was employed to generate runoff data under both current conditions and future scenarios (SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5). Our analysis reveals an increasing trend in the frequency of dry hydrological years. The Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) and Drought Magnitude (DM) confirm an increase in both the occurrence and duration of droughts in future scenarios. The runoff in all basins was reduced, causing a substantial decrease in minimum flows of 16.9%, medium flows of 11.8%, and high flows of 9.2% for the SSP5-8.5 scenario. This research introduces an approach to hydroclimate impact assessment, combining rigorous data analysis with advanced modeling techniques. Our findings not only provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by the CWPS, but also offer critical quantitative insights essential for developing effective public policies and adaptive strategies for sustainable water resource management. The sustainable management of water resources, whether surface or underground, requires the identification of the flows involved and the possibility of achieving the water balance of the water resource. These require knowledge of the main flow components with a sufficient level of accuracy. Hydrological simulation models are valuable tools for studying flow at the watershed scale but rely on data that are rarely available; therefore, they require the implementation of field investigations. There is thus a need for simple and practical tools for studying the functioning of a watershed and identifying the different components of the flows. In this paper, a method that uses only weather data, volumes of water abstraction by pumping or diversion, and flows measured at the outlet is proposed. The use of cumulative multi-year curves of measured flows or rainfall provides an assessment of the unknown flows that can take place in the watershed, as well as the order of the respective magnitudes of fast and slow flows. Its application to 20 French Mediterranean watersheds shows that it is possible to properly estimate the order of magnitude of losses or gains linked to karst flows and irrigation input. External inflows or outflows can represent up to 150% of the flow measured at the outlet. The annual volumes estimated by using this method are indeed very close (R2 = 93%) to those provided by existing knowledge. The proposed method can constitute a first approach for the quantification of flows and help to guide the implementation of field investigations and more sophisticated approaches such as hydrological modelling. Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions are increasingly concerned about water scarcity. Egypt, one of the arid MENA nations that relies primarily on Nile water, faces a water scarcity issue because of a mismatch between demand and supply. This study presents an integrated executive system for managing water resources in two regions of Egypt that have traits with many MENA regions facing water scarcities. Hydrological modeling is required for the modeling of water resources, and model calibration procedures should be implemented to compare the simulated values to the observed and measured values to minimize model errors. The Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) model was used in this study to simulate the network systems of Egypt's Minia Governorate on the western bank of the Nile's narrow valley and Nubariya in the West Nile Delta, the lower reaches of the Nile. Using field data and experience, as well as other inputs, geographic information system (GIS) software digitized streams using satellite-interpreted data. The models were run, calibrated, and validated. The main calibration objective was to reduce the discrepancy between the actual and modeled flows as much as possible. Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), percentage BIAS (PBIAS), volumetric efficiency (VE), and agreement index (d) values were calculated for three calibration cases. For anticipating water shortages until 2050, two scenarios were examined: (1) climate change scenarios based on historical climatic data from 1960 to 1990 and from 1991 to 2020, which led to a prediction scenario (2021–2050) of increasing temperature in the areas leading to evapotranspiration (ET) increases of 5.42% and 5.13% and (2) canal lining scenarios, which found a flow saving in the areas, showing that we can overcome the anticipated water shortage progress if canal lengths are rehabilitated by 10% and 25% in Minia and Nubariya. The Lower Santa Cruz River Basin Study (LSCRB Study) is a collaborative effort of regional and statewide water management stakeholders working with the US Bureau of Reclamation under the auspices of the 2009 SECURE Water Act. The impacts of climate change, land use, and population growth on projected water supply in the LSCRB were evaluated to (1) identify projected water supply and demand imbalances and (2) develop adaptation strategies to proactively respond over the next 40 years. A multi-step hydroclimate modeling and risk assessment process was conducted to assess a range of futures in terms of temperature, precipitation, runoff, soil moisture, and evapotranspiration, with a particular focus on implications for ecosystem health. Key hydroclimate modeling process decisions were informed by ongoing multi-stakeholder engagement. To incorporate the region's highly variable precipitation pattern, the study used a numerical "weather generator" to develop ensembles of precipitation and temperature time series for input to surface hydrology modeling efforts. Hydroclimate modeling outcomes consistently included increasing temperatures, and generated information related to precipitation responses (season length and timing, precipitation amount) considered useful for evaluating potential ecosystem impacts.
