Publications in Renal Failure in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED) between 1992 and 2021 were analyzed. Six publication indicators: total, independent, collaborative, first author, corresponding author, and single author publications as well as their related citation indicators, were used to compare performances of countries, institutes, and authors. Comparison of the highly cited papers and journal's impact factor (IF) contributors was discussed. In addition, the main research topics in the journal were presented. Results show that China published the most total articles and reviews, as well as the first-author papers and corresponding-author papers in the journal. The Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan ranked the top in five publication indicators: total, single-institution, inter-institutionally collaborative, first author, and corresponding-author papers. A low percentage of productive authors emerged as a journal IF contributor. Similarly, only a limited relationship between highly cited papers and IF contributing papers was found. Publications related to hemodialysis, chronic kidney disease, and acute kidney injury were the most popular topic, while meta-analysis was new focus in the last decade in the journal. Neuroctenus taiwanicus Kormilev, 1955 is a flat-bodied and enigmatic bug that was first discovered on the island of Taiwan, China. In this study, the whole mitochondrial genome of N. taiwanicus was sequenced and annotated for the first time, and its genomic data were uploaded to Genbank feedback number OR675057. The mitochondrial genome of N. taiwanicus is 15,340 bp in length, a typical circular DNA encoding 37 genes and a control region with 68.4% AþT content. The phylogeny reveals the taxonomic status of N. taiwanicus, which is most closely related to N. yunnanensis, and demonstrates the sister relationship among Neuroctenus, Mezira, and Brachyrhynchus. In addition, the results also confirm that Aradinae and Calisiinae are the earliest branching and more primitive in the family Aradidae, which is consistent with the analysis of the traditional classification. The People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC) (Taiwan) have taken divergent paths in the area of human rights. Since the two leaders Xi Jinping and Tsai Ing-wen came to power, the differences in the area of human rights have further increased. The paper analyses and compares their external human rights strategies based on realist assumptions and the soft and hard power resources of the PRC and the ROC. The PRC's objectives are to deflect international criticism of its human rights situation and to weaken the global human rights system and its underlying human rights norms. Taiwan's objective is to use its record as a human rights leader in Asia to expand its limited international space and to strengthen its ties with other consolidated democracies and the global civil society. Travel booking engines can produce, resist, and destabilise popular and state-directed geopolitical representations of a world neatly divided into national and international space. Although they present as strictly functional technical platforms, booking engines obscure and omit what is contingent and contested in the production of a destination as a bordered national territory. Due to their embedding in the webs of political representation, these systems and their backers can become targets for economic boycotts, political threats, hacks, or other interventions when territorial designations are contested. Such interventions manifest as political performances aimed at multiple audiences, including tourists and travellers, as well as the businesses and political entities that facilitate or inhibit their circulation, with spillover effects into other domains of geopolitical representation. To empirically illustrate this argument, the paper analyzes the People's Republic of China's mostly successful efforts to coerce the international travel industry to relist destinations within Taiwan as belonging to China. By extending the notion of border performativity into the 'code/spaces' that span the online and offline worlds, it concludes that booking engines, like other forms of infrastructure that serve travellers and tourists, can produce popular geopolitical effects that exceed their own technical systems. Through a multi-sited physical and virtual ethnography of Chinese migrant women's entrepreneurship in Taiwan, this paper illuminates the role of digital migrant entrepreneurship in the making of globalisation. In the digital age of gendered migrant entrepreneurship, it challenges the long-lasting dichotomy between 'bottom-up' and 'top-down' globalisation and contributes to the theoretical debate about migrant transnational entrepreneurship, elucidating how capitalism and globalisation can take multiple forms. Drawing on Chinese women's migratory biographies and the commercial geographies of the objects they trade between China and Taiwan, it shows how our global economic system is simultaneously forged by supply-chain capitalism and migrants' digitalised petit capitalistic practices. Chinese migrant workers firstly manufacture goods whilst working for multinational companies in China, then, after marriage-migration, they commercialise the products in Taiwan via WeChat. Findings illustrate the link between ICTs, migrant entrepreneurship, gendered social networks, and border transgressions in shaping a mutable globalisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines Taiwan's perspective on its participation in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1949 to 1972, during which period the Republic of China (ROC) government came to Taiwan (1949) and Avery Brundage, an American, served as the IOC President (from 1952 to 1972). Although the international situation was relatively favourable for the ROC in Taiwan during this period, the country was asked to change the name of the Olympic Committee in Taiwan. This article discusses the naming issue by analysing the content of the IOC sessions and changing international politics. Sources, including correspondence between the IOC and the Olympic Committee of the Republic of China, executive board minutes, and IOC bulletins, were gathered from the IOC archives. In addition, through the correspondence between the IOC and the Olympic Committee of the Republic of China, this paper shows why the Olympic Committee was reluctant to be called the Taiwan Olympic Committee. There is a tendency in the study of modern Chinese history to seek uniqueness in the history of modern China while attempting to identify differences from some presumed universality. However, modern Chinese history research that emphasizes uniqueness is likely to be used to create a negative image of China in the minds of the Japanese general public, given that China has become a major power and Sino-Japan relations have become unstable in the 21st century. As China is becoming a major power and an increasing global presence, the Japanese view that China is becoming distanced from universals and is instead becoming something entirely different from the "norm" is likely to amplify misunderstanding and prejudice regarding China. Therefore, we have to consider how to study the history of modern China. I believe it is only natural to study it based on the political problem that was the constant theme throughout the history of modern China. It is the history of constitutional government and revolution. From these two keywords, this paper reconsiders the universality and uniqueness of modern Chinese history, and also presents a new perspective on the relationship between China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. In recent cultural studies scholarship, native terms have been used to understand the affective state of a society. Accordingly, this paper focuses on the term "spicy Taiwanese sister," regarding its derogatory gender implications in the context of Taiwan's popular culture. Then, it discloses the strategic appropriation of the gendered term in the presidential campaign from 2019 to 2020. This analysis reveals why the affective campaigning led to a triumph of Taiwan's democracy. The affect and effect of this presidential campaign could not have been fulfilled without the China factor. The paper describes the growing human rights gap between China on one side and the US and Taiwan on the other side and analyses its impact on cross-strait relations. Since Xi Jinping's ascent to power in the People's Republic of China in 2012/2013 and the elections of Donald Trump in the US and Tsai Ing-wen in Taiwan in 2016, the relationship between China and the other two countries has worsened. The US and Taiwan have a similar view on human rights in the PRC. The increasing repression and authoritarianism of the PRC leads to a human rights gap in the Taiwan Strait that increases the divide and the tensions between both sides. The failure of the PRC to address in its proposal for a peaceful unification the concerns of the Taiwanese for their democracy and human rights pushes Taiwan further away. The similar assessment of the PRC's authoritarian threat by the US and Taiwan strengthens the bond between both, based on the shared values of democracy and human rights. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For the past several decades, US policy toward China has fundamentally limited the policy options toward Taiwan. For several historical and practical reasons, mistrust of the United States remains relatively strong among the Taiwanese public. Skepticism about US intentions oscillates between fears of being abandoned and being entrapped. As Washington policymakers continue to debate Taiwan policy through the lens of US-China relations, most of the discussion focuses on how to deter China from attacking Taiwan; few are articulating the importance of reassuring Taiwan. This article sheds light on the Taiwanese sentiment toward the United States, specifically the source of mistrust of the United States, which would significantly affect the efficacy of any US policy. The intricate history of the United States and Taiwan suggests that a new and effective US policy toward Taiwan should include both credible military deterrence of China and a clear reassurance for Taiwan. Breaking with discriminatory views and segregated education for children with disabilities, regions often referred to as Confucian Heritage Regions (CHRs) have been moving towards inclusive education. Although some of these regions have been at the centre of attention in global education recently, there is a lack of research and information about how they 'do' inclusive education. Considering that reinforcing legislative foundations is of foremost importance for its fulfillment, this study examines legislation on the education of children with disabilities in four neighbouring CHRs: the Chinese Mainland , Japan, South Korea and China's Taiwan. The core principles that frame such legislation were analyzed and cross-compared. The findings show that despite the common Confucian heritage that is attributed to them systematically in studies of inclusive education – which is often said to influence the way disability is perceived and dealt with – the four Regions treat inclusion differently in terms of legislation. While some CHRs are clearly influenced by e.g. the USA, others are trying to design a specific perspective on inclusive education. The authors argue that the complex example of these CHRs can serve as an important template for studies on both inclusive and comparative education. The article also calls for the careful treatment of inclusive education beyond an essentialist and somewhat simplistic perspective that could reduce certain regions to a monolith. This article analyses the modalities of China's combinatory unrestricted warfare. After an investigation of the founding principles of Chinese military thought, the second part of the article is dedicated to the importance of technology in modern warfare and more specifically what Chinese military thinkers called "informatization," which enables a combinatory unrestricted warfare strategy. Through a geopolitical analysis, the last part of this article specifies the modalities of Chinese combinatory unrestricted warfare applied to China's security concerns: ensuring Chinese economic development and the preservation of China's territoriality, including Taiwan and its territories in the SCS (South China Sea) and ECS (East China Sea). Economic statecraft is the use of economic tools to achieve political goals. This article assesses China's economic statecraft toward Taiwan and argues that its efficacy appears limited. I identify from the literature three causal mechanisms by which economic ties can be converted into political influence: leverage creation, interest transformation, and identity formation. I propose an analytical framework that incorporates the three causal mechanisms and conceptualizes the effectiveness of economic statecraft as an outcome of the strategic interactions between the sender's strategies and the target's countermeasures. Ultimately, the political impact of economic statecraft depends not just on how the sender deploys carrots and sticks but also on how the target government responds to external influence attempts. Because of the complex and special political relationship between Mainland China and Taiwan. Cross-Strait trade is influenced by many variables, there has been a view that trade relations between Mainland China and Taiwan are more influenced by political factors. However, between the Cross-Strait, the trade volume has generally shown an upward development trend, especially since 2001. Therefore, the political factors can hardly explain the facts, and economic factors, especially industrial structure factors in Mainland China play an important role in Cross-Strait trade. Based on the small sample data since 2001, this study employed Grey Relational Analysis （GRA） method to verify the evolution of Mainland China's industrial structure and Cross-Strait trade. Based on the results show that the evolution of Mainland China's industrial structure strongly impacts the development of Cross-Strait trade. The tertiary industry has the strongest correlation with Cross-Strait trade, followed by the secondary and primary industries. Furthermore, the evolution of the mainland's industrial structure will expand as well as accelerate the imbalance of Cross-Strait trade. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Innovation and entrepreneurship drive technological evolution, social progress, and economic development. With technological competition and a stagnant economy, innovation and entrepreneurship appear to be promising approaches to growing a country's economy. Accordingly, in this study, we identified factors influencing the entrepreneurial process by systematically integrating the opinions of 43 experts into 5 aspects and 21 key indicators by using the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process. We focused on young Taiwanese entrepreneurs starting their businesses in China. The results revealed that marketing and business development, venture fund support, investment financing, interpersonal resources and convenience administrative service were exerted the greatest influence on the entrepreneurs' decision-making process. The findings can serve as a reference for fostering a more entrepreneur-friendly environment, especially in China, whose government has actively encouraged innovation and entrepreneurship by, in part, attracting young talents from Taiwan. Differences in socioeconomic status have long been one of the major contributing factors to household educational investment, which is also a key concern in related research. Utilizing Panel Study of Family Dynamics (PSFD) datasets from 2003 to 2004, in this study we examine family investment in children's education in southeast China and Taiwan, two core economic players in east Asia, with mainland China presenting much more social inequality than Taiwan, based on Gini coefficient measures. Our findings reveal that the different levels of parental investment in education are consistent with socioeconomic disparities, which vary significantly both quantitatively and qualitatively among mainland Chinese families from diverse social class backgrounds, but this gap appears to be narrowing among households in Taiwan. Parents' level of education and income, deemed as the main class-based indicators, continue to be the determining factors in how families obtain and construct educational access, resources and opportunities for their offspring. Following the 1911 Xinhai Rebellion, the new leadership began to stress the fundamental unity of the peoples of the new Republic of China, even as newspaper commentaries foretold the need for separate Muslim representation as the only way to buy the participation of that constituency in the new state. Influential Chinese Muslim military leaders controlled much of the northwest; their participation in the new state was crucial to its survival. However, whilst the legacies of a nineteenth century process of minoritization meant it was often assumed Muslims would want either separate representation or independence, separate representation was never a cause the northwestern leadership truly espoused. Instead, although figures such as Ma Anliang, Ma Bufang and Ma Fuxiang were recognized unofficially as 'Muslim leaders', they promoted themselves as experts on other minorities, and as guardians of the integrity of the old, multi-ethnic space that had been the Qing empire. This article argues that in rejecting their own minoritization, the Chinese Muslim leaders sought to ensure the place of other minorities – Tibetan, Mongolian, Turkic – in the emerging framework of the Chinese Nationalist state, often with great violence. Since 2008, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Taiwan has increased rapidly. The Chinese government expects that the economic benefits brought to Taiwan by Chinese tourists could enable more Taiwanese to be willing to unify with mainland China. Our study focuses on whether such cross border tourism could help the Chinese government to achieve its political goal. Empirical results by Regression Discontinuity show that the independence–unification views that the majority of Taiwanese hold have not been influenced by the arrival of Chinese tourists. The increase in the number of Chinese tourists does not significantly affect the proportion of Taiwanese who support independence and who support maintaining the status quo. By contrast, it reduces the proportion of Taiwanese who support unification. It implies that cross border tourism may not be an effective means to achieve political goals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) has been studied in many domains, its application in special education remains limited. This study examined the TPACK of in-service teachers at special education schools for students with visual impairments (SVI, N = 415) and further compared the TPACK of Taiwanese and Chinese teachers. Based on both Taiwanese and Chinese samples, we revised and validated a TPACK survey for teachers in special education schools for SVI. Results showed that special education schools for SVI teachers knew content knowledge and teaching strategies better, however, they were less knowledgeable about technological tool applications. Furthermore, Chinese teachers scored higher than Taiwanese teachers in terms of integrated knowledge (TCK/TPACK) and content knowledge and teaching strategies (CKS). For strategic and competitive insights, this study measures and benchmarks the comparative operating efficiencies of insurance companies in Taiwan and mainland China. We employ the two-stage DEA with the bootstrapped truncated regression approach to examine the overall efficiency of insurance companies in Taiwan and mainland China during 2005-2011. Empirical results reveal that the savings rate, elderly population percentage, and business freedom positively affect the managerial efficiency of life insurance companies in Taiwan and mainland China, while GDP growth rate, inflation rate, corruption index, and climate risk negatively affect their managerial efficiency. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Republic of China on Taiwan (ROC) not only distrusted, but also feared, the People's Republic of China (PRC)'s assertion to be peace-loving. The reason was that the PRC used its peacefulness claim to negotiate whether the ROC or the PRC should represent 'China' in the United Nations, based on a specific definition of 'peacefulness' and on the socialist World Peace Movement as a platform of public diplomacy and international networking. After Tsai Ing-wen was elected, both Mainland China and the United States realized that the situation in the Taiwan Strait has undergone fundamental changes. In order to curb Taiwan's independence policy, the Mainland China has strengthened its coercive threats against Taiwan while the US chose to increase its strategic commitment to Taiwan and revisit the One-China policy. This article argues the current framework between China and US on Taiwan issue is collapsing. The rising of Mainland China is the root cause for this round tension, however, Tsai Ing-wen refused to accept the 92 consensus which was the trigger. This article elaborates the argument that the delicate balance in the Taiwan Strait is declining, which both China and the United Stated have increased their deterrent threats to each other while decreased their reassurances, and regional crisis is emerging.
