With the rapid development of global energy transformation and new power system, ensuring the stability of distributed energy grid connections is the key to maintaining the reliable operation of the whole power system. This paper constructs detailed impedance models of grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM) inverters using a harmonic linearization method and thoroughly investigates the mechanisms of resonance when inverters are connected to the grid, as well as the impact of model parameters on the stability of the grid system. This paper also briefly analyzes the scenario where distributed energy and electric vehicles are integrated into the grid simultaneously, demonstrating that grid system stability can be ensured in complex grid situations through reasonable parameter design. Voltage rise caused by high levels of distributed generation is manifesting as voltage regulation challenges for many electricity network service providers. In this environment it would be ideal to reduce supply voltage magnitudes, however, many network operators are hesitant to do so due to concerns related to consumer appliance performance at reduced supply voltage magnitudes. Voltage regulation requirements are defined by network standards and network service providers must ensure voltages remain within specified limits. Through an evaluation of domestic appliance performance when supplied at various voltage magnitudes, this paper examines the impact of varying voltage levels on residential appliances. Equipment energy demand, operation and actuation were monitored for each applied voltage magnitude. While no equipment failures were recorded, appliance behaviour varied significantly with applied voltage magnitude. Individual appliance conservation voltage reduction (CVR) factors have also been established. The results highlight the importance of good voltage regulation and provide substantiated appliance performance figures for future studies. The outcomes of this paper allow electricity network service providers to understand the implications of supply voltage magnitude on domestic appliance performance, whether it be understating of the impact of higher voltage magnitudes caused by distributed generation or implications of reducing voltage magnitudes to provide headroom for distributed generation integration. The main contribution of this paper is to present a simple algorithm that theoretically and numerically assesses the switching angles of an inverter operated with the SPWM technique. This technique is the most widely used for eliminating harmonics in DC-AC converters for powering motors, renewable energy applications, household appliances, etc. Unlike conventional implementations of the SPWM technique based on the analog or digital comparison of a sinusoidal signal with a triangular signal, this paper mathematically performs this comparison. It proposes a simple solution to solve the transcendental equations arising from the mathematical analysis numerically. The technique is validated by calculating the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the generated signal theoretically and numerically, and the results indicate that the calculated angles produce the same distribution of harmonics calculated analytically and numerically. The application of electrochemical cells as a source unit of electrical energy is rapidly growing—used in electric vehicles and other electric mobility devices, as well as in energy supply systems—as energy storage, often together with renewable energy sources. The key element of such systems is the power electronic converter used for DC energy storage and AC grid interfacing. It should be bidirectional to charge and discharge the battery when it is necessary. Two-stage battery interface converters are the most common; their DC-DC stage controls the battery current and adjusts voltage, but the DC-AC stage (inverter or frontend) controls the current in the grid. The use of unfolding inverters in two-stage battery interfaces can have some advantages. In this case, the DC-DC converter produces half-sinewave pulsating voltages and currents, but the unfolding circuit changes the polarity of the voltages and currents and produces no switching losses. Another trend of modern power electronics is the principle of partial power processing. In this case, power electronic converters deal only with a part of the total power; therefore, losses in such converters are reduced. This paper considers combining unfolding frontends with partial power DC-DC converters that enable the further reduction in losses. In this paper, it is shown that such implementation of the partial power conversion principle in semi-DC-AC systems is really possible based on the real-time matching of the voltage of the partial-power DC-DC converter, battery voltage (which depends on its state of charge) and the rectified instantaneous voltage of the AC grid. This paper presents a single-phase Full-Bridge (FB) inverter with a hybrid commutation technique designed to reduce the harmonic distortion caused by the loss of the controller capability around the zero-crossing point in the unipolar commutation region. The hybrid modulation changes from unipolar to bipolar commutation under the loss of the reference control, improving the robustness and efficiency of the method. The commutation technique improves the switching performance and reduces the switching losses. Simulation models are developed in MATLAB/Simulink R2023b to evaluate their performance under different operating conditions. The results show that the proposed commutation technique can achieve high efficiency, low total harmonic distortion (THD), and fast dynamic response. The experimental implementation of sliding mode control (SMC) implemented in an STM32 microcontroller confirms that the hybrid commutation technique can reduce the THD by 0.96 percentage points for local (off-grid) loads and up to 2.45 in an industrial grid-tie network, compared with unipolar commutation. These findings highlight the potential of the proposed modulation technique for applications like solar panels and offer crucial insights for ongoing research and development in this field. This paper demonstrates the potential of inverter-based loads to support grid reliability during power system transients thereby enabling reliable integration of renewable energy in power systems. Such loads are referred to in this paper as grid-supportive loads (GSLs). A new GSL model is developed that simulates the transient response capabilities that can be programmed in electronic loads. The model’s design enables it to be easily integrated in widely used commercial power system transient analysis software. Theoretical expressions are derived that explain the workings of the GSL model. The performance, numerical stability, and impact of the GSL model is validated on 9-bus and 2000-bus synthetic power system models using generator tripping and bus fault disturbances. Results on the 2000 bus system show that in the absence of frequency support from wind/solar generation resources, just 20% of loads with grid-supportive capabilities can improve frequency response by up to 2000 MW/0.1 Hz and reduce deviation in frequency at nadir by up to 60% compared to the situation when GSLs are absent. Power system reliability also improves under fault events. This paper addresses the frequency oscillation problem in a parallel-inverter-based grid-connected system. Angular frequency interactions between inverters and the grid exhibit various numbers of complicated characteristics that seriously threaten the connected power system's stable operation. This paper proposes a unified frequency oscillation method analysis to investigate the oscillation problem in a multi-VSG grid-connected system. In this method, the power control model of each grid-connected inverter is equivalent to a two-terminal network by analogy method, which can be described as a “current source” connected in parallel with a reciprocal of “admittance” and then joined in series with a joint of “admittance.” Next, considering the influence of grid impedance, the model of the whole grid-connected system is established to reveal the mechanism of multi-VSG angular frequency oscillation. Subsequently, the influence factors of frequency oscillation and its variation law are analyzed through transfer functions, which provide an essential theoretical method for solving the frequency oscillation problem in the current multi-inverter grid-connected engineering application. Parallel operation of grid-interactive inverters has been continuously gaining attraction, and their contribution to sustaining the host grid stability has become strongly demanded. This paper investigates and discusses the trends in the most recent interconnection grid codes. Grid codes call for simultaneous requirements for the low-voltage ride-through capabilities of parallel operation of grid-interactive inverters as well as their effective asymmetrical voltage support by advanced active/reactive bi-sequence power provision under unbalanced grid faults. Addressing these demands in an optimized way becomes very challenging. This paper thus proposes a new methodology to simultaneously achieve three main objectives: (1) coordination of the asymmetrical ride-through and voltage support capabilities of parallel-operated inverters, (2) maximizing the utilization of each unit and their collective contribution in boosting the positive-sequence voltage and reduction of the negative sequence voltage subject to the constraints from the inverters and the grid, and (3) minimizing the impact of the support on the active power injections. As the penetration of distributed generation (DG) systems in the grid is increasing, the challenge of combining large numbers of DGs in the power systems has to be carefully clarified and managed. The control strategy and management concept of the interconnected systems should be flexible and reliable to handle the various types of DGs. This can be suitably met by microgrids. This paper introduces the microgrid structure and elements and states the main objectives that should be achieved by the microgrid controllers and each DG controller in both operation modes (grid‐connected and island mode). It also presents the challenges of having multiple DG units in a microgrid in terms of accurate power control/sharing, voltage and frequency regulation, power management between DGs, different renewable energy sources integration and deployment, seamless mode transfer, and the modeling issues. The centralized and decentralized control techniques as potential solutions have been discussed and compared by highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each. Furthermore, the recent control techniques for drooped alternating current microgrids and the main proposed solutions and contributions in the literature have been exposed to finally overcome the droop control limitations and obtain a flexible and smart distributed power system. In islanded microgrids, distributed generators (DGs) are employed as distributed compensators to improve the power quality on the load side. Due to the access of unbalanced loads, the low-voltage microgrid will naturally exhibit three-phase unbalance, which may cause additional power losses and deteriorate power quality. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel unbalanced-voltage compensation control method based on the Hopf oscillator, which introduces the negative-sequence voltage and current into the traditional Hopf oscillator to achieve the negative sequence voltage droop characteristics. It can not only realize the negative sequence droop control of a single inverter, but it is also capable to support the reactive power automatic distribution between multi-parallel grid-forming inverters. Compared with the traditional unbalanced voltage compensation method based on filtered negative sequence reactive power, the proposed unbalanced voltage compensation method can slightly improve the dynamic response. The commutation failure (CF) is the most common fault in line-commutated high voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) systems that may lead to the transient overvoltage in the sending-side system. In the worst condition, the CF may lead to large-scale wind turbine tripping. To resolve this problem, the mathematical relationship between the reactive power consumed by the rectifier and DC voltage, DC current is derived. Then, a transient overvoltage calculation method is proposed in this paper. Furthermore, the mechanism of transient overvoltage caused by the CF is analyzed; it is revealed that the reason for three times transient overvoltage is the rapid decrease of the reactive power consumed by the rectifier during the CF and the recovery period from the CF. This paper proposes a constant reactive power control (CRPC) to inhibit transient overvoltage of the sending-side AC system. The proposed CRPC can increase the reactive power consumed by the rectifier, reduce the exchange reactive power between AC and DC systems, and suppress the transient overvoltage. A simulation model in PSCAD serves to verify the proposed CRPC on the transient overvoltage suppression in the situation of different fault types, fault duration, fault severity and short circuit ratio (SCR). Inverter-based resources respond differently than synchronous generation sources during power system faults, challenging line protection reliability. To understand the reliability challenges, Sandia National Laboratories and North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) led a collaborative study with four inverter manufacturers (mix of Type 3 Wind, Type 4 Wind, and PV Solar) and two North American protective relay manufacturers. As part of this study, an electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) with “real-code” models representing inverter firmware was used to investigate the protective relay response to faults on the modeled power system with the different inverter types. The currents and voltages obtained from the study were then played back through line relay hardware with settings typical of systems with conventional generation. The protective relays exhibited the expected reliability challenges but provided insight into the behavior of inverter-based resources during power system faults. In this paper, we share some of the challenging cases with the responses of the different line protection schemes. The hybrid LCC/VSC cascaded HVDC (HC-HVDC) scheme, in which the LCC is adopted as rectifier, and one LCC in series with multiple paralleled VSC based MMCs is adopted as inverter, combines the advantages of both LCC and VSC-MMC technologies. Presently, a HC-HVDC project is planned to deliver the hydro power from Baihetan to Jiangsu in China. One of the major challenges is to suppress the DC overcurrent issue of VSC-MMCs especially under commutation failure condition of LCC at inverter side. Based on Baihetan-Jiangsu project under construction, the model of HC-HVDC system is developed in PSCAD/EMTDC. In the system, the rectifier employs a dual 12-pulse LCC, while the inverter adopts a hybrid scheme, i.e., one LCC converter in series with three paralleled VSC-MMC converters. This paper addresses the main cause and feature of the DC overcurrent, then proposes an overcurrent suppression control method for HC-HVDC system based on fuzzy clustering and identification approach. And the system transient performances with the proposed control approach are evaluated under AC fault conditions. The results show that the proposed approach can not only suppress the DC overcurrent following the commutation failure to a certain extent, but also improve the post-fault recovery performance of the overall system. Summary Multilevel inverters are known as essential converters in renewable sources. First, in this paper, a new submodule is presented, and based on it, a new sub‐multilevel inverter is presented. The proposed sub‐multilevel inverter consists of several unidirectional and bidirectional switches and DC voltage sources. Then, the generalized topology, developed in two modular and cascaded modes, is presented to increase production levels. The proposed submodules are connected in series in the modular topology, increasing production levels. The proposed topology to produce the maximum output levels has the minimum number of IGBTs, drivers, DC voltage sources, etc. Mathematical analyses for conduction and switching losses are provided, and mathematical analyses for the number of devices and voltage across the switches are also presented. In addition to the mathematical analysis of losses, the simulation results are also presented. A general comparison of proposed topology components is presented to demonstrate their advantages. This comparison shows that the proposed topology has the minimum number of power electronic devices. In this paper, nearest level modulation is used to control the proposed topology. This paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of offshore wind-photovoltaic hybrid systems, presenting autonomous components tailored for maritime applications. Focusing on the critical role of these systems in supplying electricity to regions with limited infrastructure, particularly maritime zones, the study explores economic advantages over traditional power line installations, emphasizing remote areas. Key components, including battery storage, autonomy, battery selection (with a spotlight on lead-acid batteries), charge controllers, inverters, and the integration of Automatic Identification System (A.I.S.) for maritime safety, are discussed. In modern controller design, various solutions for controlling power converter systems can be found depending on their applications, speed of working, pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques, switching frequencies— f c , and different load types. The need to manipulate control parameters can be often observed in classical structures, e.g., well-known PID, repetitive, or deadbeat control particularly sensitive to distinct parameters uncertainties. The purpose of this paper is to present an improved version of controllers designated for a UPS that will be considerably resistant to model changes. Proposed control techniques are independent of unexpected output filter changes: L f —filter coil inductance and C f —filter capacitor conductance. The second aspect of this paper is to compare effectiveness of modified predictive MPC (model-predictive control) and feedback PBC (passivity-based control) controllers in reducing output voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) for various load values. The biggest distortions of output voltage were observed during experiments with nonlinear RC load. Both simulation and experimental verification of mismatching parameters were performed and examined. Thanks to the proposed solution, the output voltage T H D v quality factor was reduced below 8% in an efficient way for all the applied loads and stayed at the level of 1% when well-matched filter parameters were provided. In this paper, a grid impedance estimation procedure based on the injection of active and reactive powers through a grid-tied inverter is proposed. The estimation is based on Newton–Raphson algorithm acting on the phasors of the voltages and currents at the point of common coupling between the inverter and the grid. Unlike, similar procedures, based on power injections, the method is implemented in the α β frame, avoiding Park transformations. This is an advantage because dq quantities are prone to be too noisy, or oscillating in unbalance grid conditions or in the presence of voltage harmonics. Moreover, the proposed method allows variations of active and reactive to be imposed simultaneously, differently of methods relying on dq voltages and currents. This feature speeds up the estimation. The voltages and current phasors used to estimate the impedance are determined with the aid of a positive sequence extractor and Fourier algorithm providing the method robustness against unbalance grid conditions and harmonic distortions. Besides the impedance estimation, this paper proposes a technique in which the impedance information is applied to enhance the inverter's control. Here, the impedance value is used with a Routh criterion to assure the system's stability. The propositions are verified with PSIM simulations and with a Hardware-in-the-Loop real-time platform. This paper presents a dual active bridge (DAB) converter with reactive power control capability (Q-capability) for a battery energy storage system (BESS) or an electric vehicle (EV) to deliver vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services. The DAB topology is preferable for EV charging systems due to its galvanic isolation and bidirectional power flow capabilities. However, this topology increases reactive current peak and loses zero voltage switching (ZVS) operation at light loads if it is not controlled with improved modulation strategies and proper Q control. This paper proposes a mixed modulation method and a reactive power optimization (RPO) algorithm based on power system load flow concepts. Due to the complexities associated with the analytical solution using time domain analysis, this paper develops detailed universal expressions of a DAB converter using the harmonic analysis method. Analytical identification of ZVS boundaries and DSP implementation of the RPO algorithm become easier with these universal expressions. Multiple modes analysis for different operational states is no longer required. Simulation results have been shown for different modulation strategies of the DAB converters. The theoretical analysis of modulation strategies, RPO algorithm and ZVS operation are validated by experimental results on a DAB prototype. To improve the torque accuracy for open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OEW-PMSM) with common dc bus, it is necessary to eliminate the zero-sequence torque (ZST) caused by zero-sequence current (ZSC) and the third back electromotive force. But the third flux linkage mismatch can enlarge ZSC which causes torque ripple. To deal with the above problem, firstly, a q-axis current injection method combined with deadbeat predictive current control (DPCC) is adopted to inject an extra current into the reference q-axis current. The extra torque generated by this injected current can compensate for ZST. Secondly, to ensure the accuracy of the q-axis injected current, a parameter identification method based on recursive least square (RLS) algorithm with forgetting factor is presented to identify the third flux linkage accurately. The identification value can reduce ZSC and torque ripple under different working conditions. And the accurate q-axis injected current can be obtained to counteract ZST and output accurate torque. Finally, three methods are comparatively analyzed in this paper, namely the traditional DPCC method, the DPCC method with q-axis current injection and the proposed DPCC method based on RLS with forgetting factor. The open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OW-PMSM) with common DC bus configuration provides a path for zero-sequence current (ZSC). Apart from the zero-sequence voltage (ZSV) generated by inverters modulation, ZSC also comes from the third harmonic back-EMF. However, the third harmonic back-EMF contains the position information of the rotor, which can be extracted by an appropriate strategy to achieve position sensorless drive. In order to achieve sensorless drive and ZSC suppression simultaneously, this paper proposes a novel general-integral extended state observer (GI-ESO) based method. The third harmonic back-EMF of the OW-PMSM is estimated and calculated in three-phase stationary coordinate system by GI-ESO. And then, a single-phase phase lock loop observer (SPLL) is exploited to extract the position and speed information of the rotor. Meanwhile, the estimated third harmonic back-EMF is directly fed forward to SPWM as the ZSV reference, then the output voltages of the inverters contains the ZSV that can exactly counteract the third harmonic back-EMF, so as to realize the suppression of ZSC. Compared with the method of combining the fundamental back-EMF detection and proportional resonance (PR) regulator, this method can realize sensorless drive and ZSC suppression at the same time with only one scheme. Benefiting from the use of GI-ESO, the observer bandwidth can be relatively low, which helps suppress noise and extend the speed range of sensorless operation. The short-circuit response of inverter-interfaced distributed generators (IIDGs) is not adequately represented in many conventional protection studies. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of IIDG behavior during grid faults and proposes a more accurate reduced-order parameterized short-circuit current (RPSC) model of inverters. Typical inverter components are thoroughly investigated to identify those that play dominant roles during faults. The paper shows that the current limiter is the dominant factor for the steady-state fault-current of inverter; while the inverter filter along with the severity of the voltage disturbance largely determine the initial transient spike of inverter fault current. The proposed model is low-order and can be used in large scale simulations. The parameters of the proposed RPSC model can be extracted from laboratory experiments without requiring proprietary manufacturer information. The proposed fault-current model is analogous to the well-known synchronous machine model that segregates the inverter fault current into subtransient, transient, and steady-state fault currents. Power system simulations with long-term data typically have large time steps, varying from one second to a few minutes. However, for PV inverter semiconductors in grid-connected applications, the minimum thermal stress cycle occurs over the fundamental grid frequency (50 or 60 Hz). This requires the time step of the fatigue simulation to be approximately 100 μs. This small time step requires long computation times to process yearly power production profiles. In this paper, we propose a fast fatigue simulation for inverter semiconductors using the quasi-static time-series simulation concept. The proposed simulation calculates the steady state of the semiconductor junction temperature using a fast Fourier transform. The small thermal cycling during a switching period and even over the fundamental waveform is disregarded to further accelerate the simulation speed. The resulting time step of the fatigue simulation is 15 min, which is consistent with the solar dataset. The error of the proposed simulation is 0.16% compared to the fatigue simulation results using the complete thermal stress profile. The error of the proposed method is significantly less than the conventional averaged thermal profile. A PV inverter that responds to a transactive energy system is simulated to demonstrate the use of the proposed fatigue simulation. Inverter-based Volt/Var control (VVC) methods can effectively address issues of voltage deviations and constraint violations, as well as reduce network power losses in active distribution networks. Conventional VVC mainly relies on rule-based, mathematical, or heuristic methods. However, these methods can be inefficient or even infeasible for large-scale systems, especially when operational uncertainties are considered at both spatial and temporal scales. To this end, firstly, this paper formulates a multi-region coordinated VVC optimization problem to simultaneously minimize bus voltage deviations and network power losses. Furthermore, with the problem being formulated as a partially observable Markov Game, a multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG) algorithm is modified to solve this problem. Each region, which is a sub-network with a control center, is modeled as an agent and learns to optimize inverter reactive power output setpoints through exploration in virtual environment and improved neural network training procedure. Spatial and temporal uncertainties of photovoltaic power generation and loads are modeled by stochastic programming as scenarios in the MADDPG algorithm. This algorithm can address the uncertainties to guarantee solution robustness. The virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is a promising way to deal with the lack of physical inertia and damping introduced by the power-electronic-based power supply system. However, the inertia and damping characteristics may be complicated in a paralleled VSG system due to the lack of a stiff power grid and the interactions between the control system of the inverters. In this paper, the dynamics of parallel inverters with VSGs is studied. The equivalent inertia and damping characteristics are derived and analyzed in detail considering both changing of set-points and load disturbance, where the transient load sharing is also investigated. The classical problem of islanding detection in distributed generation falls into the commonly used categories known as passive, active, and hybrid techniques. These approaches vary in terms of their accuracy, security, and dependability. Detecting islanding in modern inverter-based distribution systems is of the utmost importance to ensuring the protection of equipment, ensuring the safety of workers, and preventing operational and cascaded faults when the system is specially subjected to renewable integration. Research indicates that phase-to-ground short-circuits in a frequency converter can subject the rectifier diode and IGBT to excessive voltage and current, potentially causing damage if the component selection margin during hardware design is insufficient. In order to solve the above problems, this paper studies the design of the LCL filter and ground short circuit problem of the hundred-kilowatt inverter. Firstly, an analytical method for calculating the DC bus capacitance and reactor of the inverter is proposed. The interaction between the DC bus capacitance and the reactor parameters and performance is considered in the implementation process. The parameters of the DC bus capacitor and reactor are given. Secondly, the one-to-ground short circuit of the inverter is studied, and the energy flow mode and mathematical expression of the double boost circuit, considering the influence of the leakage inductance of the power transformer, are given. Based on the above analysis, a method for determining the rectifier diode and IGBT, considering the one-to-ground short circuit of the inverter, is proposed. Finally, a one-hundred-kilowatt inverter is developed, and the corresponding experiments are carried out. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is verified by simulation and experiment. The penetration of inverter-based resources is growing rapidly around the globe. During a fault, the behavior of inverter-based resource is very different from a traditional synchronous machine based generation. As the penetration of inverter-based resources increases, there is an urgency for the industry to understand their behavior so that these resources can be accurately modeled and their impact on various protection schemes can be studied in detail. This path begins with standardizing the response of inverter-based resources to a fault. Additionally, this paper discusses issues with modeling inverter-based resources in a short circuit model which is developed for systems dominated by synchronous machines and finally a need for further research to understand impacts on traditional protection schemes as inverter-based resources continue to displace traditional generation. The wide variety of inverter control settings for solar photovoltaics (PV) causes the accurate knowledge of these settings to be difficult to obtain in practice. This paper addresses the problem of determining inverter reactive power control settings from net load advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) data. The estimation is first cast as fitting parameterized control curves. We argue for an intuitive and practical approach to preprocess the AMI data, which exposes the setting to be extracted. We then develop a more general approach with a data-driven reactive power disaggregation algorithm, reframing the problem as a maximum likelihood estimation for the native load reactive power. These methods form the first approach for reconstructing reactive power control settings of solar PV inverters from net load data. The constrained curve fitting algorithm is tested on 701 loads with behind-the-meter (BTM) PV systems with identical control settings. The settings are accurately reconstructed with mean absolute percentage errors between 0.425% and 2.870%. The disaggregation-based approach is then tested on 451 loads with variable BTM PV control settings. Different configurations of this algorithm reconstruct the PV inverter reactive power timeseries with root mean squared errors between 0.173 and 0.198 kVAR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

XOR-AND Graphs (XAGs) are an enrichment of the classical AND-Inverter Graphs (AIGs) with XOR nodes. In particular, XAGs are networks composed by ANDs, XORs, and inverters. Besides several emerging technologies applications, XAGs are often exploited in cryptography-related applications based on the multiplicative complexity of a Boolean function. The multiplicative complexity of a function is the minimum number of AND gates (i.e., multiplications) that are sufficient to represent the function over the basis {AND, XOR, NOT}. In fact, the minimization of the number of AND gates is important for high-level cryptography protocols such as secure multiparty computation, where processing AND gates is more expensive than processing XOR gates. Moreover, it is an indicator of the degree of vulnerability of the circuit, as a small number of AND gates corresponds to a high vulnerability to algebraic attacks. In this paper we study the multiplicative complexity of Boolean functions characterized by two particular regularities, called autosymmetry and D-reducibility. Hybrid high voltage direct current systems utilized for bulk-power transmission have recently attracted more attention. The overhead lines (OHLs) are mainly used for the implementation of such systems due to their outstanding economic advantages. However, OHLs are vulnerable to temporary faults, jeopardizing the safe and reliable operation of the network. The resiliency to the line faults is of considerable significance to the power transmission. This paper proposes a fault property identification strategy based on the Pearson correlation coefficient for the LCC-MMC hybrid HVDC system which can differentiate temporary and permanent faults. To achieve this, a voltage signal is injected into the faulty line by decreasing the firing angles of the LCC-based rectifier. Based on the established OHLs model and the injected signal, an estimated backward travelling wave can be accurately calculated. The fault property is identified by comparing the wave difference of the real backward travelling wave and the estimated backward travelling wave. The proposed strategy has a high accuracy since all influencing factors including the fault resistance, fault distance, and line parameters have been taken into account. Finally, to verify the efficacy of the proposed algorithm, several simulations have been performed using PSCAD/EMTDC. Fault response of an inverter based resource (IBR) is dictated by its control scheme, making it markedly different from the response of a synchronous source. This has led to misoperation of distance relays when fed by IBRs. Published literature is mostly focused on changing the control design of inverters, but this approach is not practical, as these controls are proprietary and beyond the reach of utilities. To resolve this issue, this paper proposes a method for a source-agnostic distance relay that works in time-domain. Using only single ended measurements, the relay detects, classifies and locates any fault on the line it monitors. The method does not require any polarization technique. It is shown to work for unbalanced lines of any length, for transmission or distribution system with any number (even 100%) of IBRs, is immune to load encroachment, decaying dc offset and prefault currents. The safety of converters is key to the stable operation of AC/DC hybrid power grids after AC faults. Thyristor valve current is a direct manifestation of the converter observability, but there are no measuring elements inside the converter, so the thyristor valve current can be reflected only indirectly through external electrical quantities. This paper proposes a virtual measurement scheme based on the temporal features of the converter terminal current. First, under the action of the trigger pulse, the polarity characteristics of the AC current and temporal features between the valves are utilized to predictive estimate the valve state. Then, when commutation failures occur and the bypass paths form, the conduction state of valve is constructed based on the relationship between AC and DC current. Last, when the valve is to be shut-off in the bypass path, the blocking state of the valve is corrected based on the unidirectional conductance characteristics of the valve. According to the above analysis, combined with the topological current equation of the converter, the valve current can be calculated in the whole process. Through the simulation of the different valve states and bypass paths and analysis of the field record data, the results show that the valve current can still be accurately calculated based on the virtual measurement scheme. Power sharing amongst sources can be improved in an islanded microgrid by utilizing the information of the network’s impedance. In this paper, an impedance based model reference adaptive system (Z-MRAS) scheme is proposed to estimate the impedance angle for converter based distributed generators (DGs) in the islanded mode. The focus is to enhance the proportional apparent power sharing between the DGs operated using generalized droop control (GDC). The performance of GDC depends on the effective tie-line impedance between the DGs and the proposed MRAS scheme provides the feedback of the estimated impedance angle. The accuracy of the impedance angle estimation is established for various tie-line $X/R$ ratios, and this results in enhanced power sharing performance for balanced, harmonic, unbalanced, dynamic and constant power load cases as well as parallel line and underground cable cases. The proposed method is validated through off-line simulations in MATLAB and controller hardware in loop (CHIL) using real time simulator (Opal-RT) including cases of meshed networks and DG plug and play for a modified CIGRE network. The grid-connected inverter is a key device in the renewable energy power generation system and large-scale energy storage system, which the operational stability and reliability are the basis for the efficient and safe application of electrical energy. A real-time fault diagnosis method of a three-phase for grid-connected application combining a mixed logic dynamic (MLD) model and finitecontrol set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) is proposed. This paper not only realizes the open circuit fault diagnosis and location of the switching devices in the main power circuit, but also discusses the threshold issues and post-fault operations. The advantage of the proposed method is that it directly uses the control data and measurement signals of the controller without extra sensors and calculation, which will shorter the fault diagnosis time and occupy less calculation resource of the main processor. Simulation results illustrate the quickness of the fault identification and accurate position with robustness to the interference of the diagnosis method. The existing research on voltage-source converter HVDC (VSC-HVDC) system stability mostly focuses on small-signal stability analysis methods. However, when large-signal disturbances occur, the intrinsic nonlinearity of the VSC-HVDC system becomes inevitable so that the small-signal studies are no longer valid. In this paper, a large-signal stability analysis method of the VSC-HVDC system is proposed based on the estimation of domain of attraction (DOA). This method can not only analyze the asymptotic stability of the operating point, but also answer the question of how large deviations from the operating point can be tolerated by the system. By using Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model and Lyapunov stability theorem, the DOA of the VSC-HVDC System at the operating point is estimated, and the large-signal stability of VSC-HVDC System is analyzed. On this foundation, the influence of system parameters on the large-signal stability is studied. The results can be used to guide the adjustment of system parameters to solve the problem of system instability. The time-domain simulations conducted in Matlab/Simulink are used to test the stability of the system under large-signal disturbance in the range of DOA. This paper investigates the dynamic voltage support (DVS) from inverter-based resources (IBRs) under voltage sags to enhance the low-voltage ride-through performance. The DVS problem is formulated as a nonconvex optimization program that maximizes the positive-sequence voltage magnitude at the point of common coupling (PCC) subject to the current, active power, and synchronization stability constraints. Then, we perform the optimality analysis to explore the global optimum analytically. It is found that the unique global optimum has three scenarios/stages (S1–S3), which depends on the specific relationship among grid voltage, grid strength, and physical limits of IBRs. The explicit closed-form solutions in S1 and S3 are derived, and the optimality conditions (an implicit solution) of S2 are provided, which guarantees the global optimality and enables the compatibility with fast real-time control. Finally, we implement the optimum with a grid-connected single-stage photovoltaic (PV) power plant by integrating a DVS controller. Modern energy systems are experiencing the transition towards renewable-powered ones. Some conventional thermal units based on synchronous machines are gradually decommissioned and replaced by power electronics interfaced renewables. Thus, the lack of natural inertia and governor damping, which are the features of synchronous machines, raises significant concern about system frequency stability, including the faster rate of change and lower nadir point of frequency. Meanwhile, with the rapid development of communication and Internet of Things technologies, distributed energy resources can be aggregated as a virtual power plant to help balance real-time electricity demand and supply. However, the capability of utilizing the whole virtual power plant to provide adjustable inertia support has not been explored yet. In this paper, we propose a framework of the synchronous virtual power plant based on grid-forming inverter interfaced distributed energy resources. By coordinating the parameter settings of grid-forming inverters, the virtual power plant provides inertia support. Also, we design an online learning-based parameter settings method that makes the inertia of the virtual power plant adjustable. While high volume of power electronic converters with renewable energy are being integrated into the grid, low system strength of grid causes reduction in system inertia and loss of synchronization with power converters. This paper proposes a novel interactive control scheme of voltage source converter (VSC) connected to weak grid. Firstly, a grid synchronization approach is performed using VSC side voltage transformed on rotating reference frame with respect to grid voltage, which is carried out based on lowest short circuit ratio (SCR) as approved by utilities such as Australian Energy Market Operator’s system strength report. The transformed voltage is then fed into the active power and reactive power control through PLL. Secondly, the grid synchronization approach through PLL is made interactive by adding virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control into the outer loop, which generates virtual inertia to mimic the synchronous generators of a power system. The design of the VSG control parameters is realized based on small signal stability analysis. Furthermore, the control method is evaluated as per the National Electricity Rules clauses S5.2.5.1-S5.2.14 under AEMO and National Service Providers of Australian strict Industry guidelines. Reliable power system operation with 100% inverter-based resources (IBRs) is an unsolved and challenging problem. One of the most challenging factors is ensuring power system stability after N-1 contingencies. This paper presents a promising solution using an operator support system (OSS) to enable stable operation of power system with up to 100% IBR generation. The OSS consists of two components. First is dynamic security assessment to evaluate the system resiliency, and identify critical N-1 contingencies that could endanger the system. The second component, as the key technology behind the OSS, is dynamic security optimization (DSO). The DSO optimizes the control parameters of generators and inverters to improve the stability of the system towards the identified N-1 contingencies. The key to system with 100% IBRs, as emphasized in many recent studies, is to establish the grid frequency reference using grid-forming (GFM) inverters. We show through high-fidelity Electro-Magnetic-Transient (EMT) simulations of the future generation models of Hawai‘i Island system with 100% IBR capacity that a system with 100% IBRs can be operated stably with the help of GFM inverters, and appropriate controller parameters can be found by DSO for the inverters. The DSO is verified via 28 critical N-1 contingencies of Hawai‘i Island system identified by Hawaiian Electric. Most microgrid protection schemes found in published literature suffer from a lack of generality in that they work well for the assumed topology, including type and placement of sources. Other generic protection schemes tend to be too complicated, too expensive, or both. To overcome these drawbacks, a topology-agnostic, scalable, and cost-aware protection based on fundamental principles that work in the presence of high penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) is developed and tested in this paper. The protection system also implements stable automatic reconfiguration of the healthy sections of the system after clearance of fault, thus increasing resilience by self-healing. To achieve this ambitious goal, stable inverter models are developed that operate in unbalanced networks in grid-connected and islanded modes, even with 100% IBRs, share power without conflicting controls, and can ride through faults while limiting fault currents. The scheme is tested for primary and backup protection and reconfiguration on the IEEE 123-node feeder in grid-connected and islanded modes with 15 IBRs connected to the system. The advancements in smart grid technologies had brought forth the prospect of self-healing distribution grid through intentional islanding, aided by the steadily rising penetration of inverter-based distributed generations (IBDGs). Adaptive protection is the key enabler for this resilient grid architecture. For cost-effectiveness, overcurrent relays (OCRs) with adaptive features had been proposed, often with the sensitivity problem due to low short-circuit current magnitude from the IBDG taken into consideration and largely addressed. However, apart from this widely discussed sensitivity problem, there is an underlying issue on selectivity of the OCR which is frequently disregarded when designing an adaptive overcurrent protection scheme for IBDG dominated microgrid. This selectivity problem is mainly caused by the current diversion to load during fault, which is often disregarded when performing OCR grading for a conventional grid. In this paper, this selectivity problem of the OCR is discussed in depth through a comparative study of conventional grid and a modern IBDG dominated grid. The coordination time interval margin violations problems are demonstrated through theoretical calculations and real-time hardware-in-the-loop experiments. This research aims to provide better insights into the selectivity problem as a step towards achieving a cost-effective yet reliable overcurrent-based adaptive protection for IBDG dominated microgrid. Although the harmonics interaction plays a vital role in causing commutation failure (CF) in an ultra HVDC (UHVDC) system with hierarchical connection, it has not been sufficiently considered in previous work. In this paper, the electric interaction among the inverter valves of the UHVDC system with hierarchical connection during receiving system fault transient process is demonstrated. Moreover, the mechanism of CFs in UHVDC system with hierarchical connection is also investigated via the analysis of harmonics interaction. After the AC fault occurs, the appearance processes of the local commutation failure (LCF) and concurrent commutation failure (CCF) are divided into several stages and interpreted by schematic diagrams. And the characteristics of each stage are also concluded. In addition, a coordinated CF prevention scheme based on harmonics and DC current detection is proposed to mitigate the CFs in UHVDC system with hierarchical connection. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified via a $\pm 1100$ kV UHVDC transmission system under various short circuit ratio values and AC-side coupling strengths. This paper presents a new voltage support (VS) strategy for photovoltaic (PV) systems based on voltage sensitivity analysis to enhance the dynamic voltage stability (DVS) of islanded microgrids (MGs). Every network contains different characteristics. In particular, MGs have unique features compared to utility grids such as high resistance to reactance ratio (R/X). Consequently, injection of both active and reactive current is likely to improve the DVS of the islanded MG. Therefore, instead of engaging the entire capacity to reactive current injection which is performed in conventional voltage support strategy, both the active and reactive current is injected in the proposed strategy. On contrary, without considering the fact that each network contains distinctive characteristics, other strategies with both active and reactive current injection provide fixed active and reactive current which are uniform for all networks. To convey the network distinctive features on VS strategy, voltage sensitivity subject to active and reactive current injection is used in the proposed strategy. As a consequence, unlike other fixed active and reactive current strategies, the proposed strategy provides unique combination of active and reactive current for every network. The concept and derivation of the proposed strategy is clearly described. Network sensitivity analysis is carried out to determine the voltage sensitivity coefficients. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is theoretically demonstrated and also compared with other strategies. Case studies are carried out on two different islanded MGs. The results show that the proposed voltage support strategy is capable of enhancing the DVS of islanded MGs by mitigating a possible instability, and by restoring the voltage faster than other strategies. Line-commutated converters are extensively used as the interface between ac grids and classic HVDC systems. At the inverter side, commutation failure of switches is one of the most common faults that can pose threats to the system operation. Practical and reliable study of such phenomena relies on accurate and efficient converter models for simulations. Recently, a parametric average-value model (PAVM) has been presented for ac–dc rectifiers, which considers the internal faults of the converter. In this paper, the PAVM methodology is extended to the dc–ac inverter systems, including the commutation failure of switches. The proposed PAVM also augments an automatic fault detection technique to determine the faulty switches. Using comprehensive simulation studies, the developed model is verified to accurately predict the commutation failure of switches and reconstruct the waveforms consistent with the detailed switching models of inverters while being computationally more efficient. Miniaturization and low cost contribute to the development and popularization of wireless power transfer (WPT). Reducing the number of power conversion stages can reduce the volume and cost of the WPT converter, and even make it possible to improve the efficiency. A single-stage WPT converter with constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) output and its asymmetric modulation method are proposed in this paper. A direct AC-AC converter is applied to the primary side of the WPT converter to directly convert line-frequency AC to high-frequency AC. The applied direct AC-AC converter that can replace the commonly used multi-stage primary converter reduces the number of circuit devices, thereby reducing the volume and cost of primary converter. The proposed WPT converter can realize zero voltage switching (ZVS) and power factor correction (PFC). In order to achieve CC and CV output, a switchable hybrid compensation topology is applied to the proposed WPT converter. In this paper, we investigate the control of inverter-based resources (IBRs) for optimal voltage unbalance attenuation (OVUA). This problem is formulated as an optimization program under a tailored dq-frame, which minimizes the negative-sequence voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC) subject to the current, active power, synchronization stability, and feasibility constraints. The program is inherently nonconvex and intractable. So, to guarantee the optimality, a rigorous optimality analysis is performed by leveraging analytical optimization. The analysis is divided into two cases: full mitigation of VU and partial attenuation of VU. For the former case, we directly solve the original program since the resultant VU is immediately deducible. For the latter one, directly solving the problem becomes very hard. Thus, we reformulate the program into an equivalent but more tractable form under certain conditions, by which the analytical optimum can be derived. It is found that the optimum trajectory has three stages (O1–O3), depending on two critical boundary conditions (C1 and C2). We implement the optimum with a photovoltaic (PV)-storage system by developing an OVUA controller. The proposed approach is demonstrated by dynamic simulations under different VU conditions and is compared with several existing practices. This paper presents a hierarchical control system to mitigate the variability of solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant and provide ancillary services to the electric grid without the need for additional non-solar resources. With coordinated management of each inverter in the system, the control system commands the power plant to proactively curtail a small fraction of its instantaneous maximum power potential, which gives the plant enough headroom to ramp up production from the overall power plant, for a service such as regulation reserve. This control system is practical for continuously changing cloud cover conditions in partially cloudy days. A case study from a site in Hawaii with one-second resolution solar irradiance data is used to verify the efficacy of the proposed control system. The proposed control algorithm is subsequently compared with the alternative control technology from the literature, the grouping control algorithm; the results show that the proposed hierarchical control system is over 10 times more effective in reducing generator mileage to support power fluctuations from solar PV power plants. In distribution networks with a high penetration of photovoltaic (PV), a coordination between reactive power compensation (RPC) of PV inverter and active power compensation (APC) of battery energy storage system (BESS) is always used in voltage regulation (VR). Since using a periodical VR inevitably increases communication utilization, how to design a new event-triggered one to reduce communication burden while achieving comprehensive voltage governance with the required minimum BESS sizing? Therefore, an event-triggered hybrid VR method is proposed in this paper. Firstly, an event-triggered communication is designed based on the changes in bus voltage and sensitivity, thereby defining all operating instants into transmission and ordinary sampling types. For the voltage violation issue at the transmission instants, a network-wide coordinated proportional RPC-APC is then designed, which keeps constant during one transmission interval. For the additional voltage fluctuation at the ordinary sampling instants in the interval, a local RPC-APC is additionally designed to yield a fast suppression without using any communication. In addition, the required minimum BESS sizing is obtained by calculating the total APC for VR requirement, which gives a reference in configuring BESS.
