From images of periodical subdivision and recycled papers on the move, to perfect machines, disruptive compositors, strikes and disasters, the press had many different ways of visualizing its infrastructure. Drawing on a wide range of British and Irish sources, including national, local and trade papers, quarterlies, mid-Victorian monthlies, socialist magazines, and the New Journalism of the 1890s, this article asks what was politically at stake when the press put its materiality and mobility on display. Focusing on evolutionary trees, bodies, and machines, on recycling, circuits, and networks, and on protest, disruption, and breakdown, I seek to bring nineteenth- and twenty-first century ways of seeing press infrastructure into dialogue, considering how the metaphors we use can define the object in view. The analysis concludes by linking these debates to the revolutionary collapse of capitalist newspaper production in William Morris’s ‘News from Nowhere’, serialized in the Commonweal (1890), and to the Martian destruction of press infrastructure in H. Since online social networks play an increasingly important role in the final voting decision of each individual, political parties and candidates are changing the way of doing politics and campaigning, increasing their digital presence. In this paper, we propose a methodology to analyze and measure the emotions that news agencies express on social media towards candidates and apply it to the 2018 Brazilian elections. The presented method is based on a sentiment analysis and emotion mining by means of machine learning and Natural Language Processing approaches such as Naïve Bayes classification and Stemming calculation. We found that if doing basic sentiment detection, nearly all posts are neutral. However, when we analyze emotions, following Ekman's six basic emotions, we do not find neutrality but clear and identifiable emotions. Next, we present and discuss the associative patterns between news agencies and presidential candidates. Finally, since the candidate that captured the highest and most negative attention emerged victorious in the elections, we discuss the potential importance of having a social media presence, regardless of generating positive or negative emotions. In the heat insulation winding molding process of solid rocket motors, the pressure applied by the press roller directly affects the quality of the winding molding. Insufficient pressure can result in poor bonding quality and may cause defects. This paper aims to provide an optimal design of the press roller to improve the winding molding quality of the heat insulation. The effect of the cylindrical press roller on the pressure distribution was analyzed using the elastic foundation model and a finite element (FE) model, which was assessed by Hertz theory. Subsequently, the press roller was optimized to an elliptical concave design. The effect of the radius of the elliptical concave press roller on the pressure distribution was analyzed. A comparison of the effect of the elliptical concave press roller and the cylindrical press roller on the pressure distribution was conducted using the FE model. The results show pressure uniformity is significantly improved when the elliptical concave press roller is employed on the mandrel with the smallest radius. Additionally, the elliptical concave press roller increases the pressure at the edge of the tape, which reduces the risk of lifted edges and, thereby, improves the winding molding quality of the heat insulation. The basis of every hydraulic system is based on energy transformations, which are realized through hydraulic working fluid. Hydraulic oils are certainly subject to changes within their structure, meaning the basic characteristics and parameters of hydraulic oil, such as density, viscosity, humidity. The oils that are exploited are exposed to the process of degradation, which largely leads to significantly poorer quality of hydraulic fluid. The paper deals with the influence of changes in the characteristics of the hydraulic fluid on the hydraulic operating parameters of the gear pump installed on the hydraulic press. The parameters refer to pressure, flow, and temperature, as well as the quality of hydraulic oil, which affects the volumetric efficiency of the pump, and the results presented in the conclusion are based on the measured values of parameters before and after corrective measures. The control of parameters aims to increase the efficiency and reliability of the hydraulic system, a way of modern detection of deviations of parameters from standard, required values. What is the role of media(tisation) in organisation and provision of elderly care? By looking at how planning, organising and execution of elderly care is understood in two Swedish municipalities this paper seeks to contribute to discussions of the ways in which values, preferences and working practices of news media play out in shaping conditions for provision of municipal welfare services. Our findings suggest that we can see the role of media values and preferences as embedded - although in different ways and to varying extent - in three distinct but inter-related processes that influence how actors connected to organisation and provision of municipal welfare services understand and relate to each other. These are: 1) setting the aims, aspirations and priorities in the provision of welfare services (i.e., the what); 2) translating these aims, aspirations and priorities into necessary means, resources and activities (i.e., the how); and 3) explaining and justifying the what and the how to different constituencies (i.e., the why). The paper concludes that commonly held values and beliefs about media reinforce the ongoing changes in the governing regime of elderly care in a direction where the role of municipal administrative bodies is more explicitly articulated, especially in terms of accountability and responsibility. The perestroika-time public discussion about the “white spots” of history in the Kaliningrad region focused on the history of East Prussia, which had previously been under a tacit ban. This article analyzes publications about the pre-war past of the region in the popular youth newspaper “Kaliningradskiy komsomolets” from 1985-1991. It examines the process of changing the regional historical narrative and characterizes the transformation of the historical memory of Kaliningrad residents during the years of perestroika. The paper aims to trace how the “discovery” of East Prussian themes occurred, who promoted the new historical narrative and by what means, and the stages through which the process of “appropriation” of the cultural heritage inherited after the war by the inhabitants of the region went. The study utilized a qualitative-quantitative content analysis method of newspaper texts, conducted with the help of the MAX QDA 2020 program. The results were interpreted using the categories of “Our Own” and “the Other” from B. Wandelfels’ philosophical concept and P. Nora’s “place of memory” one. The paper concludes that by the early 1990s, Kaliningrad society had varied approaches to the “pre-Soviet” period ranging from denial of the significance of the “foreign” and “the Other” heritage to its full acceptance as “one’s own”. The analysis of the content of the publications, including the commemorative practices reflected in the newspaper, shows that the regional historical narrative changed during the years of perestroika. The course of “exorcising the Prussian spirit”, approved immediately after the war, although not completely eradicated, became a marginal phenomenon, while the study, preservation, and utilization of the experience and historical and cultural heritage of the predecessors became the dominant trend in which the press of the glasnost’ era played a significant role.

The Supreme Court has constructed key parts of First Amendment law around two underlying assumptions. The first is that the press is a powerful actor capable of obtaining government information and checking government power. The second is that the executive branch is bound by various internal and external constraints that limit its ability to keep information secret. Judges and legislators have long assumed that these twin forces--an emboldened press and a constrained executive--maintain a rough balance between the press's desire to uncover secrets and the executive's desire to keep information hidden. Landmark First Amendment cases such as the Pentagon Papers decision embody this view. Professor Cass Sunstein has described these cases as establishing a "First Amendment equilibrium," one that arises out of the structural competition between the press and the executive. Today, judges and legislators continue to treat the press and the government as equal combatants in these disputes. Yet whatever equilibrium might once have existed between the press and executive branch has been destabilized. The institutional press has been eviscerated in recent years--hemorrhaging talent, expertise, resources, and legitimacy. Wide swaths of the country now qualify as "news deserts," lacking any local press presence at all. Public trust in the mainstream media has also plummeted. At the same time, many internal checks no longer constrain the ability of the executive branch to guard its secrets. This combination of a hollowed-out press and an insufficiently checked executive has given rise to a First Amendment disequilibrium, unsettling the foundations of this critical segment of constitutional law. Étienne-Léon de Lamothe-Langon (1786-1864) was the author of numerous novels belonging to different genres. However, if he wasn't completely forgotten by the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th c., it was thanks to a long list of apocryphal memoirs attributed to famous people which in fact he wrote himself. At first, this paper shows reactions from the press in 1829 after the publication of Mémoires d'une femme de qualité sur Louis XVIII and Mémoires de la comtesse Du Barri. Although some journalists chose to perpetuate the fiction that the memoirs were authentic, others denounced them as false and heavily criticized this kind of literary enterprise. Thereafter, the article focuses on Lamothe-Langon's response to his critics and on his vision of apocryphal memoirs in his preface to Les Après-diners de S. A. S. Cambacérès (1837). The most popularly used statistic R 2 has a fundamental weakness in model building: it favors adding more predictors to the model because R 2 can only increase. In effect, additional predictors start fitting noise to the data. Other measures used in selecting a regression model such as R adj 2 , AIC, SBC, and Mallow's C p does not guarantee that the model selected will also make better prediction of future values. To avoid this, data scientists withhold a percentage of the data for validation purposes. The PRESS statistic does something similar by withholding each observation in calculating its own predicted value. In this paper, we investigated the behavior of R PRESS 2 , and how it performs compared to other criterion in model selection in the presence of unnecessary predictors. Using simulated data, we found R PRESS 2 has generally performed best in selecting the true model as the best model for prediction among the model selection measures considered. In most discussions of Harold Innis' work on communications, his contributions have been treated as those of a general media theorist. His analyses of particular media are commonly viewed simply as instances of his broader account of how space- and time-binding media serve to bias societies and civilizations. This paper argues that Innis' generalizations about media derived, in fact, from his examination of how a particular cluster of media -- namely, printing and publishing, with particular reference to newspapers -- was linked to the onset of modernity. These concerns were evident in his magisterial unpublished manuscript, History of Communication. Drawing on its periodization and overarching themes, this paper examines Innis' account of the newspaper industry as it developed between the American Revolution and the mid-point of the twentieth century. The historical trajectory that Innis traces, it is argued, reveals the specific concerns about printing and modernity that underpinned his general reflections about time- and space-binding communications. The Samson Press, founded in 1930 by Flora Grierson and J.M. Shelmerdine, was a private press that printed various items such as Christmas cards, postcards, calendars, and bookplates. It was associated with the Scottish Renaissance movement and was one of the few presses operated by women. The press aimed to cater to a niche market while embodying the artistic ethos of the Arts and Crafts movement. It faced challenges during wartime restrictions on paper use and was destroyed by fire in 1936, resulting in the loss of many copies of their publications. The position accuracy of the bottom dead centre (BDC) of a slider is a crucial performance index to measure the quality of a multi-link mechanical press. At present, the research on improving the position accuracy of the BDC mainly focuses on error compensation, and there is a lack of research on the tolerance design of the transmission mechanism according to the accuracy requirements of the BDC. In this paper, the motion output accuracy of the press is characterized by the position error of the BDC of the slider and the inclined angle error of the slider. Based on the loop increment method, the error transmission model of the transmission mechanism of a multi-link mechanical press was established. The key error factors that affect the output accuracy of the press were determined by analysis of error sensitivity. On this basis, a precision synthesis method considering manufacturing cost and BDC precision reliability was proposed. Finally, a Monte Carlo simulation and experiments on a toggle mechanical press were conducted to verify the model. In recent years we have witnessed a great deal of media interest in climate change, echoing the growing public concern about a complex phenomenon with daunting consequences. This paper examines the impact of concepts such as "eco-anxiety" and "solastalgia" in the Spanish and Latin American written and digital press. These neologisms attempt to explain the emotional effects of climate change on mental health. Between 2015 and 2019 the words "solastalgia" and "Nature Deficit Disorder (NDD)" slowly made their way into the media, until 2019, when the term "eco-anxiety" became relatively successful in the newspapers. In addition to analysing the factors involved in the birth and evolution of this concept, the study describes the most frequently cited emotions, such as fear, anguish, stress, sadness and guilt. The results obtained indicate, on the one hand, that eco-anxiety is still a vague idea and not very present in the media, too often linked to negative emotions, in contradiction of clinical psychology advice. The aim of our study is to briefly summarise the course of the negotiations in Komárno and the First Vienna Award, and to give an insight into how the Hungarian and Slovak press of the time commented on the events. The Hungarian press blamed the Slovak party for the breakdown of the negotiations, saying that the Czechoslovak party was trying to stall for time and that it had not offered Hungary a number of territories with a predominantly Hungarian-speaking population. The Slovak papers, on the contrary, blamed the Hungarian party for the breakdown of the negotiations because of its excessive territorial claims. The Hungarian newspapers reported the outcome of the First Vienna Award with great joy and enthusiasm, while the Slovak press, of course, was negative. Although the First Vienna Award resulted in an ethnically much more equitable borderline between Hungary and Slovakia than it was before, the “Hungarian times” did not last long in the life of the Hungarian minority in southern Slovakia. After the Second World War, the First Vienna Award was annulled, as was the Munich Agreement. The Paris Peace Treaty, signed by Hungary on 10 February 1947, reaffirmed Hungary’s Trianon borders, which once again put the Hungarians in Slovakia in a disadvantaged and minority position. Autonomy is considered a prerequisite for the press to function in service of the public. Over the past few decades both news organizations and society at large have been subjected to significant change and instability, potentially affecting journalists' independent modes of production. We argue that a re-evaluation of journalism's institutional strength to perform the societal functions bestowed upon it by the public is imperative. In this paper we contribute to this re-evaluation by examining to what extent the organizational structure of contemporary legacy news media organizations has a constraining effect on the autonomous modes of production of the newsroom. We draw on the theoretical framework of Max Weber and his concepts of the bureaucratic ideal type, Herrschaft and Lebensordnung to engage in an examination of the organizational properties that characterize two Flemish-based international media conglomerates (DPG Media and Mediahuis) and discuss how these properties might interfere with newsrooms. Our analysis is based on the rarely considered perspective of chief editors, who (as the most powerful representatives of the newsroom within the context of the news company) provide unique insights into the organizational limits to journalistic autonomy. While the sociology of journalism has traditionally granted epistemic privilege to the mainstream news media, professional elites and their dominant meta-discourse, there is a recent trend to research journalism from other points of view. Researchers have investigated alternative and community media, journalists with low visibility or legitimacy in the workplace, as well as heterodox conceptions of professional excellence. These studies shed new light on little studied sub-groups and practices. How can we integrate them into a sustained scientific dialogue between researchers? This paper presents a methodologically original attempt to do so by dialogically re-interrogating material from studies of three situations where journalism absorbs precarious and politicised agents in the field (media activists), new practices and tasks that need doing (online discussion administration) and unusual kinds of professional attributes (experiencing emotionality in crisis reporting). In each case journalism's pursuit of professional autonomy is at stake, since conditions of production clash with established professional myths and practices or generate incompatibilities with institutionalised expectations. Our three-way exchange using the bridging/sensitising concept of edge focuses on the conversion or convertibility of external forms of capital (legitimacies, resources and experiences) into forms redeemable and tradeable in a professional field. It exhibits how forces external to the journalistic profession are (made) present in each case but refracted differently in each local configuration. This qualitative paper contends that as news media are faced with growing commercial pressures and changing news consumption habits, they need to rethink their relationship with two of their main stakeholders: readers and advertisers. Multi-stakeholder marketing provides a useful conceptual framework for such an exercise, since it invites media practitioners to reconcile the conflicting interests of different stakeholders. This study aims to understand journalists' levels of multi-stakeholder thinking regarding advertisers and readers. To explore how contemporary journalists see their role with regard to distinct stakeholders in the news ecosystem, we interviewed 14 Belgian journalists working for legacy and digital native news media. The goal of this exploratory study is to examine (1) how journalists perceive and rethink their dependence on readers and advertisers in the digital news ecosystem and (2) how their perception of the digital news ecosystem influences their attitudes towards these stakeholders. Findings indicate that journalists tend to see the value of readers in monetary terms and believe increasing reader revenue will help journalism survive. Other types of reader value (feedback, expertise, and content) are peripheral. This focus on subscribers also seems to coincide with a devaluation of other stakeholders like advertisers and non-paying readers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The paper is divided into three chapters. In the first part, the author would like to introduce the topic and its research in the Czech Republic. The second part focuses on the forced displaced area in Bohemia due to the building of the biggest military area in the protectorate called "Waffen-SS Böhmen (Beneschau)". After a short history, the author will show the response in the periodical press. The third focuses on the resettlement of the villages from the Drahansko Highlands and the reports on it in the press between 1945 and 1955. Between 1940 - 1945, some Czech areas including towns, villages and hamlets in Bohemia and Moravia (the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia at that time) had to be moved due to the building and expansion of military training grounds. The result of these migration flows resulted in over 123 villages and towns with more than 15,000 families, in total over 56,000, being people impacted by this building of militarised areas. In the war press, one can observe the announced orders, which were mostly positively received by the Czechoslovak public, in part, due to the bad experience with Western states, resulting from the Munich Agreement in 1938. The Nazi war policy and the reckless displacement of the abovementioned localities in the protectorate only deepened and confirmed these ideas. It also guaranteed the approval of these plans on an international scale. Objectives: The author follow the clear lines of post-war Central European politics, an important pillar of which was the national revival and the expulsion of the three-million-strong German ethnic group from Czechoslovakia. Conclusion: Certain forms of propaganda of the new orders and parties could be followed in the post-war press. It was primarily the output body of individual political parties. There was no longer a pluralist democracy as it was before 1938. Publications published by banned political parties ceased to exist. As a result, citizens' awareness was significantly distorted. The leading political group was the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, which was supported by a large part of the Czechoslovak population. The emphasis was on a consistent resettlement campaign, of which one of the forms was the renaming of towns, villages, and other geographical areas. The most important and significant problems in the press were the catastrophic economic afterwar conditions. According to the press, with the newly-settled municipalities returned from military districts, a successful solution to these problems was in the form of a unified agricultural cooperative in the municipalities of the Drahansko Highlands. It could therefore be said that collective farms had not been established in the Czechoslovak Republic after the February coup in 1948, but much earlier. Above all, the press was used to promote to farmers the joining to these units. In the conclusion, the author summarizes her research and draws four main conclusions from the previous chapters by focussing on the main question of how the printed press worked as a propaganda tool for the post-war establishment of Czechoslovakia.
