Composites consisting of iron aluminide and iron silicide phases were studied in this work. Powders of iron aluminide and iron silicide were prepared by mechanical alloying separately. Subsequently, they were blended in three different proportions and sintered by the SPS method under various conditions. After sintering, the composites are composed of FeAl and amounts of other silicides (Fe5Si3 and Fe3Si). Ternary Fe–Al–Si phases were not determined, even though their presence was predicted by DFT calculations. This disagreement was explained by steric factors, i.e., by differences in the space lattice of the present phases. Hardness and tribological properties were measured on composites with various weight ratios of iron aluminide and iron silicide. The results show that sintered silicides with the matrix composed of iron aluminide reach comparable hardness to tool steels. The composites with higher mass ratios of iron aluminide than silicide have higher hardness and better tribological properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Questions: What are the main vegetation types of forest and shrubland vegetation in central and eastern Euxine Turkey and SW Georgia? What are the main environmental factors affecting their diversity? What is their syntaxonomic position? Can we integrate them into the European vegetation classification system? Location: Central and eastern Euxine Turkey and SW Georgia. Methods: We collected 3104 vegetation plots of forest and shrubland vegetation in the study region and performed Two‐Way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN) classification. We described vegetation types based on the classification results, expert knowledge and information from literature sources. We defined diagnostic species and prepared distribution maps for each vegetation type. To determine the most significant environmental variables on floristic differentiation, we used canonical correspondence analysis. Detrended correspondence analysis with passive projection of most significant environmental variables was run to interpret the environmental variation of vegetation types. Results: The studied vegetation was divided into 29 vegetation types related to seven main vegetation groups: relict Mediterranean forests and shrubland (mainly along the coastline, beside some inland localities), lowland to submontane forests, central Euxine mountain forests, eastern Euxine (Colchic) mountain forests, subeuxine forests, azonal riparian forests and subalpine and alpine shrubland. Elevation is the most important factor causing the differentiation in vegetation. It is followed by longitude and latitude. Among climatic variables, temperature seasonality, annual precipitation and precipitation of the wettest quarter are the most significant factors for vegetation differentiation. These factors correlate with the reduction of maritime climate and geomorphological features. Conclusions: Vegetation types mostly correspond to the syntaxa accepted in the EuroVegChecklist. However, some of them do not appear in the EuroVegChecklist since they appear only beyond Europe. We described three syntaxa as new: Abietion equi‐trojani, Querco cerridis‐Carpinion orientalis and Piceo orientalis‐Fagenion orientalis. The study revealed high vegetation diversity of the region that should be taken into consideration in ecosystem management and used as a reference in restoration and mitigation of the effects of global changes. This work presents the possibilities of producing a substitute for a commercial matrix material for sintered metal–diamond tools which is characterized by increased tribological properties required in machining natural stones and concrete. In this study, the improvement in wear behavior of sintered pre-alloyed matrix caused by a thermal treatment was investigated. Several mixtures made of commercially available powders were homogenized by ball milling and consolidated at 900 °C using the spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. During cooling down, the specimens were subjected to isothermal holding at 350 or 250 °C for 1 h. After consolidation, all specimens were tested for density and hardness, whereas selected specimens were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and flexural strength tests. The specimens made of BDCM50 powder (a mixture of the base and pre-alloyed powders in 50:50 proportion) shows excellent properties including σ0.2 = 1045 MPa in the three-point bending test and HV10 ≈ 380. Resistance to abrasive wear evaluated in both three-body and two-body conditions in the MWT abrasion test was estimated at A i 3 = 18.1 ± 3.9 μm/20 m and   A i 2 = 95.9 ± 11.8 μm/20 m, respectively. A series of diamond-impregnated specimens (segments) was also produced and tested for wear rate on abrasive concrete. The potential graphitization of the diamond grits was investigated using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. As a reference, both the base Fe-Mn-Cu-Sn-C and commercially available Co+20%WC alloy were used to compare selected properties of the investigated materials. It has been proved that heat-treated specimens made of the base mixture modified with pre-alloyed powders are characterized by increased hardness and resistance to abrasive wear. The BDCM50 matrix has a negligible effect on diamond graphitization and shows excellent field performance, which makes it a good potential substitute for replacing Co+20%WC in sintered diamond-impregnated tools. Niobium is recently considered one of the potential alloying elements for tool steels due to the formation of hard and stable carbides of MC type. Its use is limited by the fact that these carbides tend to coarsen during conventional melting metallurgy processing. This work explores the potential of additive manufacturing for processing Nb-alloyed tool steel with a high content of carbon. Directed energy deposition was used as the processing method. It was found that this method allowed us to obtain a microstructure very similar to that obtained after the use of consolidation via spark plasma sintering when subsequent heat treatment by soft annealing, austenitizing, oil quenching and triple tempering for secondary hardness was applied. Moreover, the soft annealing process could be skipped without affecting the structure and properties when machining would not be required. The hardness of the steel was even higher after additive manufacturing was used (approx. 800–830 HV 30) than after spark plasma sintering (approx. 720–750 HV 30). The wear resistance of the materials processed by both routes was almost comparable, reaching 5–7 × 10−6 mm3N−1m−1 depending on the heat treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the housing system on the behaviour, performance, and health of dairy calves. The two-year study was conducted on 56 Holstein bull calves (from birth to 60 days of age) that were placed in individual hutches immediately after their birth. At the age of 31 days, 28 bull calves were moved to group hutches by four. The calves were weighed at birth, at 30 days, and at 60 days of age. The starter intake and health were recorded once a day. The behavioural activities of calves (lying, standing and cross-sucking, etc.) were analysed in 24-h cycles at 38 days and 53 days of age. The results showed that grouphoused calves spent less time lying and resting (P < 0.01) and more time standing (P < 0.01), receiving the starter (P < 0.05), drinking (P < 0.01), cross-sucking (P < 0.01), and social playing (P < 0.01) compared to individually housed calves. Conversely, calves from individually housing spent more time licking the housing surfaces (P < 0.05) and individual playing (P < 0.05). Bull calves housed from day 31 of age in the group hutches achieved a non-significantly higher body weight at weaning (by +3.0 kg), weight gain (by +2.8 kg), and a significantly higher (P < 0.05) starter intake (by +7.9 kg) compared to the individually housed calves. These results showed that housing in small groups allowed for the natural behaviour of calves and improved their growth without having adverse effects on their health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The oxidative addition of CF3SO3CH2Si(CH3)3 (NpSiOTf) toward organopnictogen(I) N,C,N-pincer compounds, i.e. [2,6-(DippN＝CH)2C6H3]E (1-E, where E = Sb, Bi; Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) produced compounds [2,6-(DippN＝CH)2C6H3]E(NpSi)(OTf) (2-E, where E = Sb, Bi). By analogy, the in situ reduction of [2,6-(Me2NCH2)2C6H3]ECl2 (3-E, where E = Sb, Bi) followed by treatment with NpSiOTf or MeI gave compounds [2,6-(Me2NCH2)2C6H3]E(R)(X) (R/X = NpSi/OTf 4-E, where E = Sb, Bi; R/X = Me/I 5-Sb). The reactivity of these compounds toward 1 eq. of K[BEt3H] was examined showing remarkable differences depending both on the ligand backbone and the pnictogen used. Thus in the case of 2-E, the addition of the hydride across the imino-function was achieved thereby yielding azapnicta-heterocyclic compounds [2-(DippNCH2)-6-(DippN＝CH)C6H3]E(NpSi) (6-E, where E = Sb, Bi). The same reaction of 4-Bi produced dibismuthine {[2,6-(Me2NCH2)2C6H3]Bi(NpSi)}2 (7-Bi), but in the case of 4/5-Sb the analogous distibines {[2,6-(Me2NCH2)2C6H3]Sb(R)}2 (R = NpSi7-Sb, Me 8-Sb) were not formed directly and hydrides [2,6-(Me2NCH2)2C6H3]Sb(R)H (R = NpSi9-Sb, Me 10-Sb) could be isolated instead. Nevertheless, heating of both 9-Sb and 10-Sb led to an activation of a labile Sb–H bond and the formation of distibines 7/8-Sb. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Caucasus Region belongs among the most remarkable biodiversity hotspots globally. Local mountain floodplain forests represent highly endangered ecosystems and possess the status of protective forests. However, they have not been extensively phytosociologically assessed using Braun-Blanquet methods to date. Here, we present a novel dataset of vegetation plots recorded in two remarkable areas of forest plant diversity in this region. They were Enguri (Black Sea watershed) and Aragvi (Caspian Sea watershed) River basins in the Western and Eastern Greater Caucasus, respectively. Based on 49 relevés, sampled on a broad elevation gradient (980-1830 m), we distinguished three vegetation types using unsupervised classification. Main gradients in their species composition reflect biogeographical and climatic differences. Alnus incana dominated two types. The Enguri type (Brunnero macrophyllae-Alnetum incanae) was characterized by numerous species typical of the western part of the Greater Caucasus, including tall forbs and mountain species. The Aragvi type (Veronico filiformis-Alnetum incanae) showed a diagnostic combination of common Caucasian species and relatively thermophilous forest species. The subdivision of this unit included three subtypes according to grazing intensity. The last type (Sedo stoloniferi-Alnetum barbatae) was significant by a putative Tertiary relict Alnus glutinosa subsp. barbata as a canopy dominant. It occupied lower elevations of the Enguri Region, significantly influenced by the nearby Colchic Region. To provide a regional context of the sampled vegetation, we compiled an expanded dataset of alluvial alder forests from the Caucasus and its surroundings. Their joint classification highlighted the uniqueness of the recorded communities with A. incana and clearly distinguished them from the Euxinian alliance Alnion barbatae delimited by relict species typical of the Colchic refugium (e.g. Diospyros lotus, Pterocarya fraxinifolia). A comparison of the Caucasian A. incana forests with the alluvial forests of the boreonemoral alliance Alnion incanae supported the individuality of the Caucasian stands in terms of floristic composition and allowed us to describe them as a new alliance (Veronico filiformis-Alnion incanae all. nova). It is characterized by the dominance of A. incana accompanied by numerous geographically restricted species (e.g. Senecio propinquus, Symphytum asperum) coupled with boreo-montane forest species (e.g. Oxalis acetosella, Polygonatum verticillatum). Aims: Oak–hornbeam forests and related vegetation types (phytosociological order Carpinetalia betuli) are widespread in temperate western Eurasia. However, their national classification systems are poorly compatible, and a broad‐scale classification based on numerical analyses is lacking. Therefore, we aimed to establish a unified formalized classification system based on a large data set of vegetation plots covering the entire range of these forests. Location: Europe, Anatolia, Caucasus and northern Iran. Methods: We compiled a data set of 15,817 vegetation plots from the European Vegetation Archive and the Hyrcanian Forest Vegetation Database, using the formal definition of the EUNIS habitat type T1E Carpinus and Quercus mesic deciduous forest. We classified the data set using TWINSPAN. Biogeographically and ecologically similar plot clusters were merged into oak–hornbeam forest types, which were interpreted as alliances. We also developed expert systems for automatically classifying vegetation at the alliance level for both the EuroVegChecklist (EVC) system and the revised classification. In addition, we calculated ordinations to show the major gradients in the species composition of the data set. Results: We present a revised classification system of the order Carpinetalia betuli with nine alliances, including basic descriptions of their species composition, distribution, ecology and syntaxonomy. The analyses largely supported the biogeographic concept of classification, analogous to EVC. Compared to EVC, we recognized an additional alliance Physospermo verticillati‐Quercion cerridis (southern Italy) but found no support for the alliances Astrantio‐Carpinion, Erythronio‐Carpinion and Scillo‐Quercion. The greatest difference in species composition was found between the southern and northern‐northeastern Carpinetalia types. Expert systems for the revised classification system (~89% of plots classified) and the EVC system (~72%) are also included. Conclusions: We provide the first comprehensive overview of alliances of the order Carpinetalia betuli across its whole distribution range. The associated expert systems allow consistent application of the classification of these forests in nature conservation, habitat monitoring, and biodiversity and ecological research.We provide the first formal classification for oak–hornbeam forests and related vegetation types (phytosociological order Carpinetalia betuli) across Europe and adjacent areas. It includes both traditional and revised classifications of this vegetation. Furthermore, we developed expert systems for vegetation‐plot assignment to vegetation types, which can be applied in research and biodiversity conservation, monitoring and management. It has been empirically known that the coercivity of rare-earth permanent magnets depend on the size and shape of fine particles of the main phase in the system. Also, recent experimental observations have suggested that the atomic scale structures around the grain-boundaries of the fine particles play a crucial role to determine their switching fields. In this article, we review a theoretical attempt to describe the finite temperature magnetic properties and to evaluate the reduction of the switching fields of fine particles of several rare-earth permanent magnet materials based on an atomistic spin model that is constructed using first-principles calculations. It is shown that, over a wide temperature range, the spin model gives a good description of the magnetization curves of rare-earth intermetallic compounds such as R2Fe14B (R = Dy, Ho, Pr, Nd, Sm) and SmFe12. The atomistic spin model approach is also used to describe the local magnetic anisotropy around the surfaces of the fine particles, and predicts that the rare-earth ions may exhibit planar magnetic anisotropy when they are on the crystallinestructure surfaces of the particles. The dynamical simulation of the atomistic spin model and the corresponding micromagnetic simulation show that the planar surface magnetic anisotropy causes a reduction in the switching field of fine particles by approximately 20-30%, which may be relevant to the atomic scale surface effects found in the experimental studies. Commercially supplied inoculation wires have a guaranteed chemical composition but not the size and distribution of individual phases, which are very important for nucleation. Therefore, two commercial alloys used for the inoculation of Al-Si alloys (AlTi3B1 and AlTi5B1) are investigated in this paper. The emphasis is placed on their structural analysis and the size and distribution of individual intermetallic phases. Furthermore, the grain refinement effect will be tested by adding these alloys to the AlSi7Mg0.3 alloy and testing the optimal amount of added inoculation wires. The results showed that the size and distribution of the individual phases in AlTi3B1 and AlTi5B1 meet the requirements for the successful inoculation of aluminum alloys, the intermetallic phases based on the TiAl3 phase are fine enough, and there is no agglomeration that would reduce the number of nuclei. This assumption was confirmed by adding these inoculants to the AlSi7Mg0.3 alloy, and it was found that the most ideal amount of inoculants added is 0.01 wt % when the structure was refined by approximately 32%. Aims: We asked how geological substrate affects the distribution of plant species between forest interiors, forest edges, and steppe patches in the forest–steppe landscapes. Specifically, we sought for the presence of the edge effect at the forest–grassland transitions on different substrates. Location: Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and western Ukraine. Methods: We recorded the occurrence of vascular plant species in forest interiors, at forest edges and in steppe patches on 40 forest–steppe sites located on four substrates (andesite, dolomite, limestone and loess). We compared the distribution of species diversity, beta diversity (using multivariate analysis), the number of shared species between habitats and the estimation of vegetation biomass among forest‐steppe habitats on different substrates. Results: The edge effect was observed on hard rocks, while it was absent on loess, where the ecotone species richness was intermediate between that of forest and steppe. Loess sites also had the lowest species turnover between forest and steppe and the lowest number of edge specialists. Conclusions: Substrate has a strong effect on the formation of forest–steppe mosaics. It shapes the assembly rules and plant community diversity within individual habitat mosaics. Plant communities on each substrate can respond differently to changing climate. The strong assembly rules on hard rocks may be more likely to result in species loss than on loess or similar soft sediments, where a larger number of species find their optimum in more than one forest–steppe habitat. Aluminothermic reduction without the separation of individual metals is currently considered as a possible method for processing ferromanganese sea nodules and creating new alloys. In this study, the product of their reduction—a manganese-based polymetallic mixture—was added to pure aluminum, as a mixture of alloying elements in their natural ratios. After extrusion, two new aluminum alloys with a total percentage of metallic additives ranging from 1 to 6 percent were prepared. The possibilities of the precipitation strengthening of these aluminum alloys, especially those containing Mn, Fe, Si, Ni, and Cu, were investigated under a wide range of heat treatment conditions. After each tested combination of annealing and artificial aging temperatures, the phase composition and the microstructure changes were recorded by X-ray diffraction, optical, and scanning electron microscopy with EDS analysis. Under none of the tested heat treatment conditions is a significant hardening effect observed, even though the precipitate phases are observed by TEM. However, the changes in the morphology of the present intermetallic phases caused by the heat treatment are revealed, which highlights the further possible development of these multicomponent alloys. This work investigated the possibility of the direct preparation of aluminum alloys by aluminothermic reduction of deep-sea nodules with a high excess of aluminum. The process was found to be unable to obtain aluminum alloy, but an aluminum-rich manganese-based alloy was obtained instead, being composed of intermetallics. The alloy was characterized in the as-reduced state, as well as after crushing and sintering in the temperature range of 800–950 °C. The sample sintered at 900 °C was also heat-treated by annealing at 800 °C for 3 h and rapidly cooled. It was observed that with the increasing sintering temperature, the original matrix phase Al11Mn14 was transformed into a duplex matrix with a structure corresponding to Al11Mn14 and Al4Cu9, and this mixture was further transformed to the matrix with the structure corresponding to Al4Cu9. Furthermore, the mechanical properties and wear resistance of the samples were described. The highest microhardness was reached in the sample, which was annealed after sintering. Sintered samples reached a lower wear rate because of the fragmentation of brittle intermetallics during crushing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The first comprehensive checklist of European phytosociological alliances, orders and classes (EuroVegChecklist) was published by Mucina et al. (2016, Applied Vegetation Science, 19 (Suppl. 1), 3–264). However, this checklist did not contain detailed information on the distribution of individual vegetation types. Here we provide the first maps of all alliances in Europe. Location: Europe, Greenland, Canary Islands, Madeira, Azores, Cyprus and the Caucasus countries. Methods: We collected data on the occurrence of phytosociological alliances in European countries and regions from literature and vegetation‐plot databases. We interpreted and complemented these data using the expert knowledge of an international team of vegetation scientists and matched all the previously reported alliance names and concepts with those of the EuroVegChecklist. We then mapped the occurrence of the EuroVegChecklist alliances in 82 territorial units corresponding to countries, large islands, archipelagos and peninsulas. We subdivided the mainland parts of large or biogeographically heterogeneous countries based on the European biogeographical regions. Specialized alliances of coastal habitats were mapped only for the coastal section of each territorial unit. Results: Distribution maps were prepared for 1,105 alliances of vascular‐plant dominated vegetation reported in the EuroVegChecklist. For each territorial unit, three levels of occurrence probability were plotted on the maps: (a) verified occurrence; (b) uncertain occurrence; and (c) absence. The maps of individual alliances were complemented by summary maps of the number of alliances and the alliance–area relationship. Distribution data are also provided in a spreadsheet. Conclusions: The new map series represents the first attempt to characterize the distribution of all vegetation types at the alliance level across Europe. There are still many knowledge gaps, partly due to a lack of data for some regions and partly due to uncertainties in the definition of some alliances. Aim: To analyse the biogeographic patterns of Temperate Deciduous Forests (TDFs) in Western Eurasia based on different life‐forms and forests layers and explore their relationships with the current climate, Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) climate and topography. Location: Western Eurasia. Taxon: Vascular plants. Methods: We delimited nine regions encompassing the variability of TDFs in Western Eurasia and collected 1000 vegetation plots from each. We deconstructed the plant communities into three layers, tree, shrub and floor. We used (i) generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) to analyse the influence of current climate, historical climate and topography on species richness by accounting for regional effects and (ii) redundancy analysis (RDA) with variance partitioning to describe the variation in life forms along abiotic gradients. The three forest layers were analysed jointly and separately. Results: The Balkans, Alps and Carpathians appeared to be the richest in plant species, whereas the British Isles and the Hyrcanian region were the poorest. Annual temperature range and annual mean temperature were the best predictors of species richness for the whole dataset and for the shrub layer. The tree layer richness was mainly explained by the annual temperature range and by elevation, whereas the forest floor richness was more related to the annual temperature range and the annual mean temperature differences between the LGM and current climate. The current climate was the main predictor of the composition of the whole community, the tree layer and the floor layer, while the shrub layer was also influenced by historical climate. Main conclusions: Our overview of the diversity of temperate deciduous forests in Western Eurasia demonstrates different patterns and drivers across life‐forms and forest layers. While the diversity of trees is mainly linked to current climatic conditions, the shrub layer is also driven by postglacial‐glacial climatic stability, suggesting a different origin from forest trees. The Heat Treatment of Metallic Materials in Modern Industry is a Special Issue of the journal I Materials i , which aims to publish original full-length articles and review papers on basic and applied research centered around the given topic, and thereby make the understanding of the metallurgical background of the contemporary state of heat treatment techniques used in the industrial branches in the 21st century. Finally, the papers on laser- or electron-beam surface treatments as well as the physical vapor deposition of thin films are of interest to the Editors of this Special Issue. The papers which explore the research and development works on bulk heat and cryogenic treatment of steel, aluminium, titanium, magnesium, or copper alloys are particularly welcome. High speed tool steels are materials that exhibit superior mechanical properties (e.g., high hardness). They should also be resistant to thermal exposure to maintain high hardness during the machining process. In this paper, a C-free tool steel formed of Fe matrix and a Mo6Co7 intermetallic phase was studied. This steel was compared to the well-known Vanadis 60 steel containing Fe matrix and carbides. Microstructures were investigated by scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy, and the mechanical properties and thermal stability of both materials were compared. It was proven that the strengthening in the Vanadis 60 steel was mainly caused by the carbides, while the C-free steel was strengthened by the Mo6Co7 phase. The hardness values of both materials were comparable in the utilization state (approx. 950 HV). The hardness of Vanadis 60 steel decreased after several minutes of annealing at 650 °C under the value that enables material utilization. The hardness value of the steel strengthened by the intermetallics also decreased but significantly slower. Based on these results, the main finding of this study is that the C-free steel exhibited much better thermal stability and may be utilized at higher temperatures for longer periods of time than Vanadis 60. The geoid is an equipotential surface of the static Earth's gravity field which plays a fundamental role in definition of physical heights related to the mean sea level (orthometric heights) in geodesy and which represents a reference surface in many geoscientific studies. Its determination with the cm-level accuracy or better, in particular over dry land, belongs to major tasks of modern geodesy. Traditional data and underlined theory have significantly been affected in recent years by rapid advances in observation techniques. This study reviews gradients of the disturbing gravity potential, both currently available and foreseen, and systematically discusses mathematical models for geoid determination based on gradient data. Fundamentals required for geoid definition and its estimation from measured potential gradients are shortly reviewed at the beginning of the text. Then particular mathematical models based on solutions to boundary-value problems of the potential theory, which include both integral transforms and integral equations, are formulated. Properties of respective integral kernel functions are demonstrated and discussed. With the new mathematical models introduced, new research topics are opened which must be resolved in order to allow for their full-fledged applicability in geoid modelling. Stochastic modelling is also discussed which estimates gradient spatial resolution and accuracy required for geoid modelling with the cm-level accuracy. Results of stochastic modelling suggest that the cm-geoid can be estimated using available gradient data if related problems, namely reduction of gradient data for gravitational effects of all masses outside the geoid and their downward continuation, are solved at the same level of accuracy. Deep-sea manganese nodules are polymetallic oxidic ores that can be found on a seabed. Aluminothermic reduction is one of the possibilities of manganese nodules processing. This process obtains the polymetallic alloy with a high content of Mn and a varying content of Al, depending on the ratio between aluminum and nodules. The corrosion behaviors of three experimental Mn-based alloys produced by aluminothermic reduction with a content of Mn > 50 wt % were studied. The electrochemical testing in potable water and model seawater was used to explain the corrosion mechanism of Mn-based alloys. The results showed that the corrosion rate of experimental Mn-based alloy decreases with the increase in aluminum content in both potable water and model seawater. It was observed that the uniform corrosion of experimental Mn-based alloys is changed with an increase in aluminum content in alloy to localized corrosion, which was caused by microcells in an environment of model seawater. In contrast, the formation of a semi-protective layer of corrosion products was observed on the surface of Mn-based alloys with a higher content of aluminum in potable water. Moreover, the pitting corrosion of tested Mn-based alloys was observed neither in potable water nor in model seawater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Novel high-entropy (multi-principal elements) alloy based on Fe-Al-Si-Ni-Ti in equimolar proportions has been developed. The alloy powder obtained by mechanical alloying is composed of orthorhombic FeTiSi phase with the admixture of B2 FeAl. During spark plasma sintering of this powder, the FeSi phase is formed and the amount of FeAl phase increases at the expense of the FeTiSi phase. The material is characterized by a high compressive strength (approx. 1500 MPa) at room temperature, being brittle. At 800 °C, the alloy is plastically deformable, having a yield strength of 459 MPa. The wear resistance of the material is very good, comparable to the tool steel. During the wear test, the spallation of the FeSi particles from the wear track was observed locally.
