Microplastics produced from the discarded traditional non-degradable mulch film deteriorate the ecological environment and pose a great threat to human health. Developing eco-friendly and biodegradable materials to substitute traditional plastic mulch film highly contributed to the progress of green agriculture. Herein, a category of eco-friendly and all-biodegradable soy protein isolate (SPI)/oxidized sucrose (OS)/Lignin mulch film was innovatively proposed by employing OS as green cross-linker and lignin as nanofiller under chemical/physical interaction. The cross-linking effect and hydrogen bonds between biopolymers act as sacrificial bonds for energy dissipation and effectively reinforced the intermolecular interactions as well as tensile strength from 6.67 MPa of pristine SPI film to 8.45 MPa of SPI/OS/Lignin film. Moreover, the SPI/OS/Lignin mulch film also presented excellent UV-shielding, moisture retention, heat preservation effect and sustained urea release properties. Benefitting from the above-mentioned merits, higher germination rate of cabbage seed was achieved when the natural soil was covered by such multifunctional mulch film compared to traditional low-density PE film. This study deals with the production of natural fiber plastic composites (NFPCs) to reduce environmental pollution with agricultural and plastic waste. Where the NFPCs were prepared from waste/pure polyethylene (WPE) (pure polyethylene (50%)/recycled polyethylene (50%)) and modified sunflower waste via an eco-friendly and economic biological process. The sunflower fibers (SF) were treated via whole selective fungal isolate, namely, Rhizopus oryzae (acc no. OM912662) using two different incubation conditions; submerged (Sub), and solid-state fermentation (SSF) to enhance the fibers' compatibility with WPE. The treated and untreated fibers were added to WPE with various concentrations (10 and 20 wt%). The morphology and structure of fibers were characterised by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR). Furthermore, the mechanical properties, morphology, biodegradation and water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) for the prepared NFPCs were investigated. The increasing environmental burden generated by disposable plastic wastes makes the development of sustainable substitute materials an emergent task. As one of the most abundant bioresources, chitosan (CS) has been considered as a potential candidate for plastic substitution. Conventionally, CS-based materials are fabricated through a solution-processing procedure due to the high crystallinity of CS. Herein, we designed a CS-based material via integrating CS into the network of polyimine (PI), which shows thermomechanical processability similar to plastics. Strong interactions were achieved through dynamic imine bond and hydrogen bond and thus formed a thermo-processable dynamic composite network. These CS-based plastic substitutes exhibit exceptional mechanical performances, excellent thermal/chemical stability, and a series of self-adaptiveness, including re-healing, reprocessing and multi-layer laminating. Notably, CPs can be easily degraded and 100% recycled for the production of next-generation materials. Biodegradable cellulosic pulp foams with robustness and water resistance are urgently needed in nowadays to replace petroleum-based plastic foams for environmental sustainability. In this work, a facile protocol to fabricate robust poly-lactic acid (PLA) coated cellulose foams (PCCF) was developed through a combined water-based foaming and PLA melt-coating process using pulp as the raw material. In the synthesis, the so-called PLA coating was realized through melting PLA powders dispersed between fibers by an in-situ heating and post cooling process. Performance tests revealed that the incorporation of PLA coating significantly enhances mechanical strength, water stability, and biodegradability of the synthesized PCCF samples compared with conventional cellulosic foams. Specifically, the low-density PCCF were observed with mechanical strength up to 81.24 kPa, high water stability, and more than 95% degradation in 56 days. As the fabrication process is simple and pulp is highly cost competitive, our proposed synthesis strategy makes the PCCF a promising substitute for petroleum-based plastic foams at large-scale production., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Over 64 billion paper-plastic laminate (PPL) coffee cups are consumed between the United States and Canada annually, the majority accumulating in landfills due to a hydrophobic plastic inner-lining. Recycling can mitigate environmental damage and provide economic value from repurposed products. We found that standard repulping methods were insufficient to separate fiber from plastic due to the low intensity of treatment. To increase process intensity, we mechanically refined shredded PPL coffee cups and Kraft eucalyptus sheets (control) at 2%, 3%, and 4% consistencies with three passes to determine the energy required to separate fibers from plastic and the effects on fiber quality. 2% and 3% consistency PPL cups measured under 40 kWh/tonne of input material for one refiner pass and ∼ 80 kWh/tonne for 4% consistency PPL cups. Recovered fiber fraction totaled 87.7%, 85.3%, and 80.5% of input mass of Kraft eucalyptus and 72.3%, 72.6%, and 79.6% of input mass of PPL cups at 2%, 3%, and 4% consistency, respectively. Fines content of PPL cups jumped from 8% pre-refining to ∼ 30% post-refining while Kraft eucalyptus fibers were unaffected, suggesting that breaking the plastic-fiber bonds results in fines generation. Mean fiber length of PPL cups slightly decreased with consistency and tensile strength improved. Freeness decreased with consistency only in PPL cup samples. These results demonstrate a low energy requirement to effectively separate fiber and plastics in PPL cups as well as minimal impact on fiber quality using existing refining technology, and provides an estimate of the financial costs of local recycling efforts., (Copyright © 2021.
