Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate and compare the current trends in development of the second largest cities in each Baltic state – Tartu (Estonia), Kaunas (Lithuania), and Daugavpils (Latvia) – as smart destinations, based on publicly available tourism information. Design/methodology/approach: The study uses a case study employing a descriptive research method, and the authors reached their conclusions based on this material. Furthermore, the paper primarily focuses on literature and new research which deals with tourism in the 21st century, its innovations, changes, and trends. Findings: The levels and directions of development of Tartu, Kaunas, and Daugavpils as a smart tourism destination are different. Although all three are the second largest cities in each Baltic State, their initial historical development, availability of resources, locations, and strategic development of the country show differences in development. Tartu conforms to the standards in all four categories. However, the category of digitalization receives the most attention and contributes to the positive smart destination result in the other three categories. Comparatively, Daugavpils records fewer current achievements according to the STDC, although the authors believe that there is potential that can be seen in the strategic policy documents. However, judging by all four categories, Daugavpils, similarly to Kaunas, currently demonstrates the greatest achievements in the culture heritage and creativity category. The article aims at providing a synopsis of previous studies on the Kaunas Polish language, as well as identifying knowledge gaps, i.e., the things that - despite extensive research on this language variety - are still not known. At the turn of the 20th and the 21st century, intensified research both on the current Polish language variety, as spoken in the Kaunas region, and its history (mainly over the 19th century up till the 1950s) brought about vast amounts of linguistic and extralinguistic data. However, a detailed analysis shows that there is no easy answer to the question posed in the title of the paper. The article overviews the situation of the Kaunas Polish language, its territorial range, scope, and functions, as well as its defining features observable at the beginning of the 21st century. The cultural heritage of modern architecture is a widely acknowledged phenomenon; however, unique urban landscapes that have witnessed a fundamental transformation in urban life in the 20th century are still underrepresented on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In this paper the built urban heritage of Kaunas city (1919–1939) is investigated as an example of a modern urban heritage site with a problematic focus on defining the attributes of urban heritage, especially when intangible heritage values are added to the tangible built heritage. In this paper the attributes of modern urban heritage are discussed on the example of "Modernist Kaunas (1919–1939): Architecture of Optimism", the nomination dossier for the UNESCO World Heritage List. Three groups of attributes are described using historical research and later discussed by applying the method of comparative analysis. The conclusion proposes that Modernist Kaunas can fill the gap by representing Eastern European modern urbanity and enhance the understanding of the modern global city by reflecting the metropolitan aspirations in modern Europe. Purpose: The social dimension of Higher Education has gained relevance on the political and strategic discourses that urge Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to put University Social Responsibility (USR) into action and also recognise its importance for students' development. However, students' conceptions of USR are seldom explored. This paper aims to understand students' perceptions of USR and the potential of their involvement in broadly-defined USR activities/projects. Design/methodology/approach: This research involves two studies in three European universities, Edinburgh, Porto and Kaunas: the first uses a qualitative approach to consider how students perceive the impact of their involvement in the Erasmus+ project ESSA, using document analysis, focus groups and thematic analysis; the second involves a questionnaire with 718 students to explore their views on USR, participation in university-based experiences, personal and social development and citizenship conceptions, analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings: Student's value USR and their university policies and practises, even if they feel they are not engaged as they should. They value university as a learning space beyond the classroom and putting USR into practice. Their participation is related to their appraisal of USR and their conceptions of citizens' roles. Research limitations/implications: In spite of using convenience samples of students in three different universities, this research not only sheds light on students' views on USR and their participation in diverse university-based experiences but also advances with research instruments that can be used in future research in this field. Social implications: This research helps HEIs realise the potential of promoting students' participation in diverse university-based experiences, increasing community engagement and their development as professionals and critical citizens. Originality/value: This paper addresses a research gap by exploring how students perceive USR and their participation in university-based experiences might simultaneously be a strategy for putting USR in action and fostering students' civic engagement. The main problem presented in this paper is the safety inlet navigation of the waterway below the bridge in the city of Kaunas in Lithuania. The analyzed reach is located in the Nemunas river downstream of the Kaunas dam. It is a part of the waterway E–41 leading to the Klaipeda harbor on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. The work was initiated by the Lithuanian company UAB "Inžinerinis projektavimas" with funds from the project called European Union Trans-European Transport Network (EU TEN-T). The main requirement imposed along this reach is to keep sufficient depth even in the range of the lowest flows. The depth is sufficient if it is not lower than 1.15 m for minimum flows such as Q95% and Q95% with ice. The hydraulic conditions for maximum flow Q50%, Q5%, and Q1% are also taken into account for control because the threat of hydraulic jump generation was also noticed. The research is based on georeferenced data from public and non-public sources. The hydrologic data were received from the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service. The physical model was created in the Water Laboratory of the Department of Hydraulic and Sanitary Engineering at Poznan University of Life Sciences, Poland. The preprocessing of spatial data in ArcGIS 10.8.2 and rules of hydraulic similarity were implemented in the process of physical model preparation. Three experiments were conducted in the laboratory with scaled values of Q95%, Q5%, and Q1%. The measurements of the water surface and evaluations of the average velocity were used to validate the 2D numerical model prepared in HEC-RAS 6.3.1. The basic layers of the HEC-RAS model were preprocessed in ArcGIS 10.8.2 by ESRI company. The numerical model was implemented to test different values of unknown roughness of the channel bottom. The simulations were conducted for the real values of Q95% and Q95% with ice and Q50%. The results of the simulations were depth and Froude number maps. These maps were classified into zones of no risk, middle risk, and high risk. ArcGIS in the post-processing phase was applied to identify the locations of the hazards. The magnitude of risk was expressed in terms of minimum depth achieved, maximum Froude number, as well as the length of the reaches with high risk related to these two factors. The threat of hydraulic jump formation below the bridge was also noticed. Conducted results confirmed that the combination of hydrodynamic simulations and geoprocessing in the pre- and post-processing stages could be a powerful tool in hydraulic engineering analyses. The field of solar photovoltaic (PV) plants has seen significant growth in recent years, with an increasing number of installations being developed worldwide. However, despite advancements in technology and design, the impact of shading on the performance of PV plants remains an area of concern. Accurate 3D models produced using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry can provide aid to evaluate shading from nearby surroundings and to determine the potential of a site for electricity production via solar PV plants. The main objective of this paper is to address the problem of shadows significantly reducing energy yield in solar PV plants by proposing a methodology that aims at assessing the shading effects on PV systems and determining the optimal configuration for a PV module array using an accurate digital environment 3D model built using UAV photogrammetry. A high-level-of-detail 3D model allows us to evaluate possible obstacles for PV module array construction and accurately recreate the proximities that can cast shadows. The methodology was applied to grid-connected PV systems in Kaunas, Lithuania. The results of the case study show that electricity production in PV modules is highest at a 15° tilt angle when the distance between PV rows is 1.25 m. The proposed methodology gives an 11% difference in PV yield due to shading compared with other tools that do not include shading. This study also highlights that at least 30% financing support is necessary for solar PV plants to be economically attractive, resulting in a payback of 9 years and an internal rate of return of 8%. The paper is concerned with the process of developing the concept for the conservation, restoration, and reconstruction of the missing parts of the seventeenth-century candleholders from the Church of St. George the Martyr in Kaunas. The paper will review the issues encountered in the effort to find and select materials for the conservation and restoration of stone fragments. It will also describe the tests carried out during the process and highlight the role of chemical and non-interventional analysis as an auxiliary tool in the process of conservation and restoration. This paper presents research concerning dewatered areas in the littoral zones of the Kaunas hydropower plant (HPP) reservoir in Lithuania. It is a multipurpose reservoir that is primarily used by two large hydropower plants for power generation. As a result of the peaking operation regime of the Kaunas HPP, the large quantity of water that is subtracted and released into the reservoir by the Kruonis pumped storage hydropower plant (PSP), and the reservoir morphology, i.e., the shallow, gently sloping littoral zone, significant dewatered areas can appear during drawdown operations. This is especially dangerous during the fish spawning period. Therefore, reservoir operation rules are in force that limit the operation of HPPs and secure other reservoir stakeholder needs. There is a lack of knowledge concerning fish spawning locations, how they change, and what areas are dewatered at different stages of HPP operation. This knowledge is crucial for decision-making and efficient reservoir storage management in order to simultaneously increase power generation and protect the environment. Current assessments of the spawning sites are mostly based on studies that were carried out in the 1990s. Surveying fish spawning sites is typically a difficult task that is usually carried out by performing manual bathymetric measurements due to the limitations of sonar in such conditions. A detailed survey of a small (approximately 5 ha) area containing several potential spawning sites was carried out using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) equipped with multispectral and conventional RGB cameras. The captured images were processed using photogrammetry and analyzed using various techniques, including machine learning. In order to highlight water and track changes, various indices were calculated and assessed, such as the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI), and Normalized Green-Red Difference Index (NGRDI). High-resolution multispectral images were used to analyze the spectral footprint of aquatic macrophytes, and the possibility of using the results of this study to identify and map potential spawning sites over the entire reservoir (approximately 63.5 km2) was evaluated. The aim of the study was to investigate and implement modern surveying techniques to improve usage of reservoir storage during hydropower plant drawdown operations. The experimental results show that thresholding of the NGRDI and supervised classification of the NDWI were the best-performing methods for the shoreline detection in the fish spawning sites. The European Union (EU) has set an ambitious goal to achieve a carbon neutral society by 2050. In response, several EU member states, including Lithuania, pledged to achieve 100% renewables in the final energy consumption. The main ways of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the energy sector are (1) the energy efficiency improvement and (2) the use of renewable energy sources (RES). Although many policies and measures were implemented to promote a fast penetration of renewables, especially in the supply sector, there is a massive GHG emissions reduction potential in households. However, there are several social and behavioral barriers hampering a fast penetration of renewables into households. Therefore, new well-targeted policies are necessary to overcome these barriers. The community based social marketing (CBSM) can be applied to promote GHG emissions reduction in households through behavioral changes. This paper evaluates the carbon emissions reduction potential at the household level driven by CBSM. The research is conducted in the Kaunas district municipality in Lithuania, having quantitative and qualitative components. The results show that ~20% energy could be saved in households through behavioral changes initiated by CBSM; and that it is possible to achieve significant GHG emissions reduction, save energy and money without making any major investments in households. The average realistically achievable GHG emissions reduction potential for one Lithuanian household is ~500 kg CO2 equivalent per year. These results can be used to roughly assess the energy saving and GHG emissions reduction potential of all Lithuanian households due to behavioral changes. This study also shows that the main obstacles to behavioral changes in households (after the implementation of intervention measures) are: lack of knowledge, lack of trust in information sources, inertia, values, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper overviews the history of the privately owned Kaunas Women's Arts and Crafts School (1927-1940), established by the craftswoman Stasė Gudonytė-Biziokienė (1896-1943). Her work is analysed in the context of the interwar arts and crafts education. The school was continuing the tradition of women's crafts education that formed in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Being part of the interwar elite, Gudonytė-Bizokienė, was considered one of the founders of Lithuanian high fashion. During the period of 1935-1936, the school introduced three additional courses: hat making, women's fashion, and children's clothing design and tailoring. The paper uses archival material and memories of family members to present the biography of Gudonytė-Bizokienė. The paper also describes the school with its educational aims, structure, institutional reforms of 1935, and its curriculum. The paper overviews the remaining samples of the students' work that reflect the interwar ideals of a cosy home space, and feature a mix of art deco and modernised folk style. The significance of the school is demonstrated by tracing the careers of its graduates in the general context of arts and crafts education of the time. Apart from Kaunas Art School and Dotnuva Academy of Agriculture (1924-1945), Kaunas Women's Arts and Crafts School was the only higher education establishment with speciality in arts. The school's aims matched the Lithuanian demands. Gudonytė-Bizokienė's tailoring courses were on par with the educational programs of the notable tailors of the interwar Kaunas. The paper concludes that it was the artistic crafts that Gudonytė-Bizokienė saw as her main goal, while the fashion salons were only an appendage to her educational work. Crafts education was credited with a higher status in the Lithuanian schools of vocational education. However small, the group of the school's graduates that the research was able to identify demonstrates excellent professional skills and readiness to work in the sphere of crafts education. The paper takes up an interpretation of earliest literary pieces and letters by Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855) from the years 1817-1819, when the poet studied at Vilnius University and taught at a Kaunas school. Satirical and mock-heroic poems from that time (Mieszko, książę Nowogródka 〈Mieszko, Prince of Novogrudok〉, Pani Aniela 〈Lady Aniela〉, Dziewica z Orleanu 〈The Maid of Orleans〉, Kartofla 〈Potato〉) are adaptations of Voltaire's plots adjusted to Polish conditions. The interpreter asks about the mode in which young Mickiewicz pictures the historical, human nature, and existential (misfortune) evil. The adaptations from Voltaire are compared with a tale of Żywila (Zhivila) and letters written in a diction of despair. A combination of a private thread with a historical thread of evil experienced by a community devoid of freedom is a characteristic feature of Mickiewicz's image of evil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The scientific aim of this article is to elucidate the effects of various tillage practices on soil properties and crop yields; additionally, it seeks to highlight the significant potential of specific farming systems in enhancing soil organic carbon, thereby positively influencing CO2 emissions from soil. In the experimental station of Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas District, Lithuania (54°52′50″ N and 23°49′41″ E), a long-term field experiment has been established since 1999, and studies have been conducted since 2003. The soil of the experimental site is classified as Epieutric Endocalcaric Planosol (Endoclayic, Episiltic, Aric, Drainic, Endoraptic, Uterquic), according to the World Reference Base (WRB, 2022). Two primary factors were assessed. Factor A incorporated practices of straw removal versus straw chopping and spreading, while Factor B evaluated a spectrum of tillage techniques: conventional deep plowing and two no-tillage practices, one of which involved cover crops. The findings from this long-term study highlight a significant increase in SOC stocks across all treatments over the 20-year period. Notably, the no-tillage practices, coupled with the spreading of chopped straw, demonstrated the most substantial growth in SOC levels, particularly in the top 0–10 cm soil layer. This trend underscores the effectiveness of minimizing soil disturbance and incorporating organic matter in boosting SOC stocks. The different tillage systems influence CO2 emissions from soil. Initially, direct sowing into uncultivated land, both with and without cover crops, led to a notable reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional plowing. However, this effect was found to vary over the growth cycle of the plant, highlighting the dynamic interaction between tillage practices, soil properties, and environmental conditions. Collaborative research efforts that involve farmers, scientists, policymakers, and other stakeholders are crucial for the development of holistic, practical, scalable solutions that enhance the sustainability and productivity of agricultural systems. The scientific aim of this article is to investigate the potential benefits of implementing a multi-cropping system, specifically focusing on the incorporation of caraway, to improve soil agrochemical and biological properties, prevent soil degradation and erosion, and ultimately enhance soil quality and health to better adapt to climate change. This study aims to provide valuable insights into the comparative analysis of various soil parameters and biological indicators to showcase the promising perspectives and importance of perennial crop production for improving soil quality and agricultural sustainability. These crops are designed to provide multiple benefits simultaneously, including improved yields, enhanced ecosystem services, and reduced environmental effects. However, an integrated assessment of their overall effects on the agroecosystem is crucial to understand their potential benefits and trade-offs. The field experiment was conducted over three consecutive vegetative seasons (2017 to 2021) at the Experimental Station of Vytautas Magnus University Agriculture Academy (VMU AA) in Kaunas district, Lithuania. The experimental site is located at 54°53′7.5″ N latitude and 23°50′18.11″ E longitude. The treatments within a replicate were multi-cropping systems of sole crops (spring barley (1), spring wheat (2), pea (3), caraway (4)), binary crops (spring barley–caraway (5), spring wheat–caraway (6), pea–caraway (7)), and trinary crops (spring barley–caraway–white clover (8), spring wheat–caraway–white clover (9), pea–caraway–white clover (10)) crops. However, an integrated assessment of their impact on the agroecosystem is needed to understand their potential benefits and processes. To determine the complex interactions between indicators, the interrelationships between indicators, and the strength of impacts, this study applied an integrated assessment approach using the comprehensive assessment index (CEI). The CEI values showed that integrating caraway (Carum carvi L.) into multi-cropping systems can have several positive effects. The effect of the binary spring barley and caraway and the trinary spring barley, caraway, and white clover crops on the agroecosystem is positively higher than that of the other comparative sole, binary, and trinary crops. Caraway, after spring wheat together with white clover, has a higher positive effect on the agroecosystem than caraway without white clover. Specifically, this study addresses key aspects, such as soil health, nutrient cycling, weed management, and overall agricultural sustainability, within the context of multi-cropping practices. By evaluating the effects of these cropping systems on soil agrochemical properties and ecosystem dynamics, the research provides valuable insights into sustainable agricultural practices that promote environmental conservation and long-term soil health. Late-life depression (LLD) is a multifactorial disorder, with susceptibility and vulnerability potentially influenced by gene-environment interaction. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism is associated with LLD. The sample of 353 participants aged 65 years and over was randomly selected from the list of Kaunas city inhabitants by Residents' Register Service of Lithuania. Depressive symptoms were ascertained using the EURO-D scale. The List of Threatening Events Questionnaire was used to identify stressful life events that happened over the last 6 months and during lifetime. A 5-HTTLPR and lifetime stressful events interaction was indicated by higher odds of depression in those with s/s genotype who experienced high stress compared to l/l carriers with low or medium stress, while 5-HTTLPR and current stressful events interaction analysis revealed that carriers of either one or two copies of the s allele had increased odds of depressive symptoms associated with stress compared to participants with the l/l genotype not exposed to stressful situations. Although no significant direct association was found between the 5-HTTLPR short allele and depression, our findings demonstrated that lifetime or current stressful life events and their modification by 5-HTTLPR genotype are risk factors for late-life depression. Aim. To compare the impact of the time and method of diagnosis on gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in women who gave birth at the Hospital of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LUHS) Kauno klinikos. Methods. A retrospective study was performed using data from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the LUHS Birth Registry to analyze the data of women who gave birth and had GDM in 2020–2021. The subjects were divided based on the type of diagnosis: GDM was diagnosed either at the first antenatal visit when fasting plasma glycemia (FPG) was ≥5.1 mmol/L (early diagnosis group) or after OGTT at 24 + 0 − 28 + 6 weeks of gestation when at least one pathological glycemic index was observed: fasting glycemia 5.1–6.9 mmol/L or 1-h glycemia ≥10.0 mmol/L or 2 h glycemia 8.5–11.0 mmol/L (late diagnosis group). The results were processed using IBM SPSS. Results. The early diagnosis group had 1254 (65.7%) women, the late diagnosis group had 654 (34.3%). More primigravida women were in the late diagnosis group (p = 0.017) while more multigravida were in the early diagnosis group (p = 0.033). The early diagnosis group had more obese women (p = 0.001), including those with a BMI > 40 (p = 0.001). In the early diagnosis group, GDM was more frequently diagnosed in women who gained <11 kg (p = 0.005), while in the late diagnosis group—>16 kg (p = 0.001). FPG was higher in the early diagnosis group (p = 0.001). Glycemia was more commonly corrected with lifestyle changes in the late diagnosis group (p = 0.001), and with additional insulin therapy in the early diagnosis group (p = 0.001). Polyhydramnios and preeclampsia were more common in the late diagnosis group (p = 0.027 and p = 0.009). There were more large-for-gestational-age neonates in the late diagnosis group (p = 0.005). Macrosomia was more common in the late diagnosis group (p = 0.008). Conclusions. GDM is more commonly diagnosed with OGTT in primigravida women. Higher pregestational weight and BMI has an impact on the early diagnosis of GDM and need for insulin therapy with lifestyle changes. Late diagnosis of GDM is connected with obstetric complications. The article discusses the circumstances surrounding the establishment of Kaunas’ first metalworking factory. It delves into details such as the founding date (Autumn of 1862), the spelling of the founder’s name — nobleman Tomas Heidukevičius (also known as Tomasz Hejdukiewicz) — the initial activities of the factory, capital procurement, and the establishment of the company. Through presented documents and a cemetery inspection, this article refutes the misconception that the factory was originally named “Minerva” and that its first owner was nobleman Mikalojus Pranciškus Rekošas. The “reintroduction” of Heidukevičius into the historiography of the development of Lithuanian industry sheds light on the origin of artifacts found on his gravestone bearing his initials. Background: In addiction medicine training, self-assessment is increasingly used to support self-regulation learning by identifying standards of excellence, competence gaps, and training needs. To ensure psychiatrists in Lithuania also develop specific addiction competencies, the Lithuanian Health Sciences University faculty in Kaunas developed an addiction psychiatry curriculum. Objectives: The aim of this research is to explore the efficacy of the AM-TNA scale to measure individual and group differences in proficiency in the core competencies of addiction medicine. A cross-sectional study and a convenience sample were used. Method: We studied the differences in performance in addiction medicine competencies between 4 successive year groups and analysed the variance to determine the statistical differences between the means of 4 year groups with biases, resulting from repeated measurement statistically corrected-for. Results: Of the psychiatrists in training, 41% or 59% completed the scale. The assessment of competencies suggested that all but 2 competencies differ significantly (p < 0.05) between the 4 groups. The post hoc analyses indicated that mean scores for 24 of the 30 core competencies differed significantly between the year groups (p < 0.05) and showed a gradual increase in scores of self-assessed competencies over the 4 year groups. We found adequate scale variance and a gradual increase in self-assessed competencies between the 4 year groups, suggesting a positive association between the results of incremental professional training and improved self-assessed substance use disorders (SUD) competency scores. Conclusions: This study illustrates the efficacy of the AM-TNA scale as an assessment instrument in a local training context. Future research should aim to have larger sample sizes, be longitudinal in design, assess individual progress, and focus on comparing and combining self-reported competencies with validated objective external assessment and feedback. Dynamic building energy performance modeling is becoming increasingly important in the architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry because of the sector's significant environmental impact. For such analysis, a climate file representing a typical meteorological year (TMY) is needed, including hourly values for the most important weather-related parameters. However, TMY shows little resemblance to the future of the particular location where a building has been used for decades. Therefore, using predicted future climates during building design is unfortunately rarely practiced, potentially undermining the strategies that should be the fundamental basis of the design. To explore this question, our study compared the heating and cooling energy consumption, indoor thermal comfort, and summer overheating potential of a selected building for three distinctive European climates, in Hungary, Portugal, and Lithuania. All of them were changed according to the IPCC RCP4.5 scenario, and were examined for the present, the 2050, and the 2100 scenarios. We also tested adaptive clothing to evaluate the indoor comfort parameters. The results show a 10% increase in heating and cooling energy use for the same construction and location between 2020 and 2100. The continental climate of Budapest is the most threatened by summer overheating, with an increase of 69% for the ODH26 indicator. A more balanced warming for Lisbon was found (23%), and moderate changes for the city of Kaunas (a 153% increase from a very low baseline). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Empathy - the projection of a subjective state into an object using one's imagination, so that the object appears to be infused with this state - can be experienced not only on an interpersonal level but also with animals, machines, ecosystems and places. The importance of empathy in design and other place-related practices is currently acknowledged by researchers and designers. The aim of this research was to develop a theory-grounded artistic research approach using Artificial Intelligence (AI) based tools in order to stimulate connection with a place and induce empathy with the place. The first section of the article presents a literature analysis and systematisation in connection with place, empathy, and human-place relationships. Selected theoretical landscape models are analysed in order to reveal the theoretical premises for human-place relationships involving empathy. The second section includes the presentation of the proposed methodology for artistic research, the application of the methodology in two historical localities for recreation (Panemune and Kulautuva) situated in and around the city of Kaunas (Lithuania), and an assessment of the results using an approach based on self-reflection and autoethnography. The research proves that it is possible to develop artworks using AI-based tools to create a connection between human beings, places and artificial intelligence. The creation of the artworks induced biophilic and topophilic reactions to the places chosen by the creators, as well as the experience of the genius loci and empathy with the places in which the artistic research was carried out. Background and Objectives: It is very important to analyze how body mass index (BMI) and psychological well-being (PWB) combination may be differentially associated with mortality risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate the additional prognostic value of the combined status of BMI and PWB for the estimation of all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality risk in the adult Lithuanian urban population. Materials and Methods: Initial data were collected within the framework of the international cohort HAPIEE study from 2006 to 2008. A random sample of 7115 individuals aged 45–72 years was screened. The response rate was 65%. Deaths were evaluated by the death register of Kaunas city (Lithuania) in a follow-up study until 31 December 2020. The mean (SD) duration of the follow-up for the endpoints period was 12.60 (2.79) years. PWB was evaluated by a CASP-12 questionnaire. Results: The findings from the Cox proportional hazards regression multivariable analysis showed that the combinations of underweight plus lower PWB and severe obesity plus lower PWB increased all-cause mortality risk in men (respectively hazard ratio (HR) = 5.65 and HR = 1.60) and in women (respectively HR = 6.02 and HR = 1.77); and increased the risk of mortality from CVD in men (respectively HR = 6.69 and HR = 2.19) compared with responders with normal weight plus higher PWB. The combination of severe obesity plus higher PWB significantly increased the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality risk in men. The combinations of normal weight plus lower PWB and overweight plus lower PWB significantly increased the risk of all-cause mortality risk in men. Conclusions: The combination of severe obesity independently on lower or higher PWB and the combination of underweight plus lower PWB is a strong predictor for all-cause and CVD mortality risk in men and a strong predictor for all-cause mortality risk in women. The article examines the discourse of the right-wing and left-wing politicians and the academic community in 1918–1922 when trying to decide on the type of university needed by the state of Lithuania being built. The novelty of the article is reflected in two aspects. Firstly, the analysis is done at a micro-level, i.e., highlighting the key views and disagreements concerning the university prevailing in the society of the time from the individual perspective. Secondly, the discourse analysis has shown that the attitudes, actions, and initiatives in terms of leadership of politicians and intellectuals were important in decision-making related to university studies. It is that leadership of the academic community in the opening of the first private school of higher education in independent Lithuania, namely the Advanced Courses in 1919–1920, that influenced both the Government and members of the Constituent Assembly to find a consensus on founding the University of Lithuania in Kaunas in 1922. In the article, in addition to the already quite well-known episode of the issue of lifetime visas by the Japanese vice-consul in Lithuania Chiune Sugihara in Kaunas in the summer of 1940, Lithuania’s position on the issue of refugees is presented, as well as the efforts of Lithuanian diplomats in negotiating with the governments of Britain and the USSR about the possibilities of emigration of willing refugees – Polish Jews. The contribution of Jan Zwartendijk, Honorary Consul of the Netherlands in Lithuania, to the history of salvation is also remembered. The paths of emigration are discussed, showing their entire spectrum, and not just the usual ones with the Trans-Siberian route linked by Sugihara visas. The article reviews the activities of the “Iron Wolf” of the Lithuanian National Guard in 1927–1930. The main focus is on the Kaunas group of this organization, reviewing the activities of opposition organizations, the tracking of public institution employees and the formation of nationalist organizations and a bureaucratic apparatus loyal to the nationalists (tautininkai). Based on the archival material, which has so far been little systematically used in the scientific literature, the efforts of the post-coup regime of A. Smetona and A.
