The article reflects the author's experiences at the preconference of Association for Library Collections and Technical Services in June 2005. The author provides tips taken from the conference for potential authors, included finding time to write, choosing topics, finding and using the right style for a topic, the essentials of copyright for authors and the benefits of writing and publishing. Writing well is hard work and bringing a paper from concept to publication is a challenge.
