This paper describes a flow control of the dye in the paper mill with the quasi-Z-source indirect matrix converter (QZSIMC) fed induction motor drive. More than a decade the voltage-source inverter (VSI) and current-source inverter (CSI) have been used to control the speed of the induction motor, which in turns controls the flow of dye. Recently, the matrix converter (MC) has been an excellent competitor for the VSI or CSI for its compactness. The voltage transfer ratio of the VSI, CSI, and MC has been limited to 0.866. Thus, the efficiency of these converters is less. To improve the voltage transfer ratio the quasi-Z-source network (QZSN) is to be used between voltage source and indirect MC (IMC). The modification in the shoot-through duty ratio of the QZSN varies the voltage transfer ratio greater than 0.866. Different voltage transfer ratios are needed for different voltage sag conditions. For a variation of the duty ratio of the QZSN, the fuzzy logic controller has been presented. To control the IMC vector control with space vector modulation has been presented. This paper proposes the implementation of QZSIMC adjustable speed drive for the flow control of dye in paper mill during different voltage sag conditions. A 4-kW prototype has been built and the effectiveness of the proposed system is verified with simulation results and experimental setup. Simulation is done in MATLAB, Simulink platform. Experimental setup is done with the aid of a TMS320F2812 (Texas Instrument) processor. The experimental results validate the maintenance of the speed of an induction motor at the set condition, thus controlling the perfect flow of dye in paper manufacturing technology. Paper-based digital microfluidic biochips (P-DMFBs) have recently emerged as a promising low-cost and fast-responsive platform for biochemical assays. In P-DMFBs, electrodes and control lines are printed on a piece of photograph paper using an inkjet printer and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) conductive ink. Compared with traditional digital microfluidic biochips (DMFBs), P-DMFBs enjoy significant advantages, such as faster in-place fabrication with printer and ink, lower costs, and better disposability. Since electrodes and CNT control lines are printed on the same side of this paper, a critical design challenge for P-DMFB is to prevent control interference between moving droplets and the voltages on CNT control lines. Control interference may result in unexpected droplet movements and thus incorrect assay outputs. To address this design challenge, a control-fluidic codesign methodology is proposed in this paper, along with two demonstrative design flows integrating both fluidic design and control design, i.e., the droplet-oriented codesign flow and the electrode-oriented codesign flow. The droplet-oriented flow is suitable for designing biochips with sparse electrodes and relatively larger number of droplets, whereas the electrode-oriented flow is suitable for biochips with dense electrodes and smaller number of droplets. Main insulation of windings connected with valves in high voltage direct current (HVDC) convert transformers withstands pulsating DC voltages. This paper presents breakdown properties of oil-impregnated paper under pulsating DC voltages at different temperatures. Progressive stress tests were carried out to obtain breakdown voltages of oil-impregnated paper with thickness of 0.2 mm under pulsating DC voltages at different temperatures. Constant stress tests were executed to measure time to breakdown of the oil-paper specimens. Both types of the experiments were also undertaken under either AC or DC voltages. An electrical aging lifetime model was proposed for the oil-impregnated paper, and parameters of the electrical aging lifetime model were presented. An oil-paper insulation system which will withstand DC voltage under normal conditions is a key component of converter transformers as well as high voltage direct current (HVDC) bushings. When the system changes its state, operating overvoltage appears. This kind of overvoltage will consequently affect the application of oilimmersed facilities and the safety of entire grid. Therefore, this paper studies the charge coupling behavior of double-layer oil-paper insulation under DC and pulse voltages. From the research of different pulse voltage amplitudes, pulse numbers and polarity, conclusions can be drawn that, with the increase of the pulse voltage amplitudes, DC and pulse voltages in the same polarity cause the absolute value of the initial surface potential to decrease and then rise; while in different polarities, the charge with the same polarity as the pulse voltage increases. Furthermore, for the same pulse voltage, the absolute initial value of the DC voltage applied in the same polarity is higher than that in different polarities. Considering the pulse number effect, it is obvious that the initial value increases with the increase in the pulse number, and then reaches saturation. Also, with the increase in pulse number, the decay rate decreases and thus the charge is slowly dissipated. From the tdV/dt and the decay time curves, the peak value increases with the increase in the pulse number, while the characteristic time varies by the polarity of the DC and pulse voltages. This paper exploits smart inverters of distributed energy resources (DERs) for the mitigation of fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR). According to the IEEE Standard 1547-2018, smart inverters with voltage ride-through and var injection capabilities are promising technologies for mitigating FIDVR. This paper quantitatively investigates the effectiveness of smart inverters for FIDVR from a system-wide perspective. It shows that the penetration of smart inverters and induction motors are important factors affecting mitigation success. In addition, the over-voltages at the end of FIDVR due to load disconnections can be prevented with coordinated control of DERs and automated switching capacitors. The control scheme of smart inverters used for FIDVR is extended from the distributed volt/var droop control to include low- and high-voltage ride-through capabilities. The IEEE 13-bus feeder, the 8500-node test feeder, and the IEEE 390-node low-voltage network test system are used to illustrate the impact of DER penetration. For example, one can determine the residential air conditioner penetration level (for a given system at certain DER penetration level) that makes a system susceptible to FIDVR. Voltage-controlled three-phase three-leg inverters are widely applied in various occasions. The inverters are generally switched to the current-controlled mode to limit the fault currents when short-circuit faults happen. Under symmetrical fault, the inverter can be controlled as a symmetrical, three-phase current source. However, the voltage limiting will happen under asymmetrical fault. As a result, the fault phase currents will be distorted and cannot be completely controlled. Considering that the voltage limiting is mainly caused by large load impedance of healthy phase under asymmetrical fault, the voltage limiting is avoided by paralleling the virtual impedance with the output filter capacitor in this paper. As a result, the current limiting loop is not broken and the fault phase currents can be effectively controlled. The implementation of virtual impedance in control system and the influence of virtual impedance on the stability of system are also analyzed in detail in this paper. Voltage rise caused by high levels of distributed generation is manifesting as voltage regulation challenges for many electricity network service providers. In this environment it would be ideal to reduce supply voltage magnitudes, however, many network operators are hesitant to do so due to concerns related to consumer appliance performance at reduced supply voltage magnitudes. Voltage regulation requirements are defined by network standards and network service providers must ensure voltages remain within specified limits. Through an evaluation of domestic appliance performance when supplied at various voltage magnitudes, this paper examines the impact of varying voltage levels on residential appliances. Equipment energy demand, operation and actuation were monitored for each applied voltage magnitude. While no equipment failures were recorded, appliance behaviour varied significantly with applied voltage magnitude. Individual appliance conservation voltage reduction (CVR) factors have also been established. The results highlight the importance of good voltage regulation and provide substantiated appliance performance figures for future studies. The outcomes of this paper allow electricity network service providers to understand the implications of supply voltage magnitude on domestic appliance performance, whether it be understating of the impact of higher voltage magnitudes caused by distributed generation or implications of reducing voltage magnitudes to provide headroom for distributed generation integration. The work reported in this paper aims at developing an algorithm for system operators to solve a robust security-constrained AC optimal power flow (R-SC-ACOPF) problem, which also optimizes the settings of discrete controllers including load tap changers (LTCs) and shunt capacitor banks (SCBs). An iterative algorithm involving a master problem and a number of sub-problems is proposed. The master problem selects the optimal discrete controllers’ settings by taking into account primal SC-ACOPF constraints based on the single-component worst contingencies identified by the sub-problems. Each sub-problem is a bi-level max-min problem used to find the current worst contingency. The overall objective is to minimize the total cost, including generation and load shedding cost, while satisfying all relevant constraints. The master problem and sub-problems allow representing LTC tap positions, SCB status, and contingencies using binary variables. Two case studies are presented as applications of this novel technique. This paper presents extensive verification, sensitivity, and application studies for an online substation grounding grid condition monitoring method proposed in a companion paper. The studies are conducted using a realistic substation grounding grid and associated feeder configurations commonly encountered in North America. The verification studies confirm that the proposed method is able to estimate the substation grounding impedances with acceptable accuracy. Main factors impacting measurement accuracy are identified and quantified through sensitivity studies. The findings lead to a guide for the implementation and operation of the proposed method. In this paper, a new modulation strategy based on the carrier-based switching strategy for the non-square direct matrix converters (MC) is proposed to control the active power of distributed generation (DG) units. In this strategy, the active power of DGs is controlled by the central input current control of the non-square direct MC independent from the voltage and frequency. Conventionally, each DG has a converter, and for supplying a load with N number of DGs, N number of converters are needed and each converter has its own modulation switching and control strategy to control the power output of each DG. Needless to say, in a microgrid with N number of DGs, the control strategy of each converter has more complex structure than that of a microgrid with one converter, and surely the former strategy entails more volume and price. Using the proposed converter in this paper, it is possible to supply a load with N number of DGs through one converter. Also, the power outputs of all DGs are controlled by a central control strategy. The proposed central control strategy is described and simulated for a typical microgrid. Experimental and simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed converter and the proposed strategy. This paper addresses the interactions among the control loops of voltage-sourced converters (VSCs) embedded in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems and the impact of these interactions on the performance of individual control loops. Furthermore, this paper proposes a method to design the individual control loops, rather than the interconnected control system, such that the overall system stability is ensured in the presence of interactions. This paper addresses three aspects of the impact of control loop interactions on the overall control system of the VSC including stability, transient response, and steady-state response. To illustrate the impact of interactions on the VSC small-signal stability, stability regions of the interconnected control loops are obtained and compared against those of the various individual control loops. Then, a novel formulation of the VSC stability criterion is presented, and the small-gain theorem is utilized to determine a range of stabilizing gains for the interconnected control system. Moreover, new indices using the infinity norm are introduced to evaluate the impact of interactions on the transient response of the VSC. Finally, the DC gain of a certain set of transfer functions is used to assess the impact of control loops interactions on the set-point tracking capability of the VSC. The introduced indices along with time-domain simulations show that the transient response of the d-axis control loops is not impacted by the interactions, whereas that of the q-axis control loops is significantly impacted by the interactions. The modern power grid features the high penetration of power converters, which widely employ a phase-locked loop (PLL) for grid synchronization. However, it has been pointed out that PLL can give rise to small-signal instabilities under weak grid conditions. This problem can be potentially resolved by operating the converters in grid-forming mode, namely, without using a PLL. Nonetheless, it has not been theoretically revealed how the placement of grid-forming converters enhances the small-signal stability of power systems integrated with large-scale PLL-based converters. This paper aims at filling this gap. Based on matrix perturbation theory, we explicitly demonstrate that the placement of grid-forming converters is equivalent to increasing the power grid strength and thus improving the small-signal stability of PLL-based converters. Furthermore, we investigate the optimal locations to place grid-forming converters by increasing the smallest eigenvalue of the weighted and Kron-reduced Laplacian matrix of the power network. The analysis in this paper is validated through high-fidelity simulation studies on a modified two-area test system and a modified 39-bus test system. This paper potentially lays the foundation for understanding the interaction between PLL-based (i.e., grid-following) converters and grid-forming converters, and coordinating their placements in future converter-dominated power systems. This paper analytically examines how the condition of weak grid connection affects the torsional sub-synchronous oscillations (SSOs) induced by a grid-connected DFIG in a power system. The examination focuses on the SSO mode of grid-connected DFIG, which is dominated by the phase locked loop (PLL) or DC voltage control. Theoretical analysis is carried out to prove that the condition of weak grid connection amplifies the impact of modal resonance between the DFIG and torsional dynamics of synchronous generators. The amplifying effect of weak grid connection exhibits as the decrease of damping of SSO mode of DFIG and increase of the associated residue when the grid connection weakens. Consequently, the DFIG is more likely to induce torsional SSOs under the condition of weak grid connection, leading to system instability in the worst case. Analytical examination presented in the paper reveals the mechanism about how the condition of weak grid connection plays a key role for the DFIG to induce the torsional SSOs. An example multi-machine power system with the grid-connected DFIG is presented. This paper presents a novel power flow control system for a remote military microgrid with hybrid energy storage. A combination of batteries and supercapacitors (SCs) is managed by the novel control system to increase the battery life by redirecting the higher frequency current that would have to flow in the battery if SCs were not present. This paper offers a practical solution to manage the SC current and ensure that the SCs are never overcharged or commanded to support the system when they are discharged to the lower operating limit chosen. The new controller allows the independent selection of the low-pass filter parameter and the number of SCs. By making the most out of these two degrees of freedom, we investigate different configurations, identifying the one achieving the highest cash flow for the overall system. As the inverter-based generation replaces the conventional synchronous generators, it may also need to fill in the missing ancillary service support. One of these ancillary services is dynamic reactive power provision and voltage control. This paper analyzes optimal strategy of reactive and active fault-current support of the inverter-based generation leading to fast voltage recovery of the system. For the purpose of the analysis, new ramping active current controller able to emulate different behavior of active current injection is proposed. By optimizing its parameters for different case studies of the system, the conclusions about optimal behavior of the inverter based generation with respect to system parameters and operating conditions are drawn. It is observed that the optimal combination of active and reactive fault-current is the most sensitive to the dynamic load component penetration levels in the system. With the increasing penetration levels, the significance of active fault-current injection increases. The results show that with higher penetration levels of dynamic load component in the heavy load areas, the ramping down of the inverter-based generation active fault-current results in slower voltage recovery of the system. The maximum efficiency point of an inductive power link depends on its load power consumption and the distance between the transmitter and the receiver. Matching networks (MNs) and adjustable ac–dc converters have been proposed in the literature as a means to achieve and track this maximum efficiency point. Most of the published papers in inductive power transmission only use one of these two methods without considering a joint design. In this paper, we analyze and compare both methods proposing a general joint design which exploits the advantages of each method. A proof-of-concept system was developed following the proposed flow, built and tested. This system, with a regulated output voltage, presents improvements in measured efficiencies of up to 80% (from 9.2% to 16%) at the largest distances, thus maximizing the distance range. The same approach can be used to maximize output dc voltage, instead of the link efficiency. New methods for extending the tunability range in second-order voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) with quadrature outputs are presented and compared in this paper. Linear dependence is the most common type of relation between frequency of oscillations (FO) and control voltage (or current) in communication subsystems (VCOs). However, there are other nonlinear types of dependencies that are advantageous (quadratic and cubic) and should be further studied. Positions of controllable blocks within the structure of the oscillator (providing parameters influencing time constants of integrators) in two scenarios are studied together. The impact of controllable parameters of these additional elements on FO as well as on produced output signal levels is evaluated. The simulation and experimental results are shown to confirm expected behavior of solutions in the case of the quadratic type of control of FO. Nowadays, standard linear control offers a tunability ratio 10:1 (for the same ratio of parameters that control the FO) only. However, in this paper, the experimental tests yield a tunability ratio 80:1 (50 kHz–4 MHz) for dc control voltage within the range 0.175–1.75 V (10:1). The presented approach is very beneficial for low supply voltage systems requiring a wide range of tunability and also for utilizing active devices having limited range of adjustability of their controllable parameters while still requiring wide tunability. This paper proposes unconventional control techniques for a portable power supply consisting of electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), a dc–dc converter, and a low-impedance load such a plasma load. Between the EDLCs and the plasma load consuming high power, a dc–dc converter is required to control the output voltage from the rapidly decreasing voltage of EDLCs. In addition, the dc–dc converter should maintain a set point by responding to arcs occurred in plasma process. This paper proposed hybrid analog and digital controls for a nonideal boost converter which was setup by theoretical analysis. The proposed system is verified with experiment and simulation. Although smart home has received wide attention in recent years, numerous scholars focus more on energy optimization strategy than energy dispatch hardware device (named energy router). Meanwhile, this energy router should have several features, i.e., high renewable energy utilization, energy multi-port and low volume. Thus, this paper designs a nine-port energy router regarding smart home and proposes a multimode hierarchical management strategy for this energy router. First, for the multi-port demand of wind, solar, storage and utilization, this paper presents a nine-port energy router to improve the renewable energy consumption and power supply flexibility. In addition, to reduce the volume of the energy router, a non-isolated AC/DC hybrid topology is constructed through embedding the integrated power electronic converters, which achieves the miniaturization of the energy router. In order to improve the renewable energy utilization rate, the decentralized module control is proposed for the components of energy router to provide the voltage and frequency support for system, and realizes the power sharing of distributed generations (DGs). Furthermore, the power exchange control with three-mode switching is proposed to guarantee the global energy flow balance under complex conditions. The paper proposes a control scheme to improve the dynamic response of power systems through the automatic regulators of converter-based Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). In this scheme, both active and reactive power control of DERs are varied to regulate both frequency and voltage, as opposed to current practice where frequency and voltage controllers are decoupled. To assess the proposed control against the current state-of-art, the paper also defines a metric that captures the combined effect of frequency/voltage response at any given bus of the network. Results indicate that the proposed control strategy leads to a significant improvement in the stability and performance of the overall power system. These results are based on a comprehensive case study carried out by employing a modified version of the IEEE 39-bus benchmark system, where a portion of the synchronous machines is substituted by converter-interfaced DERs. This paper presents the three-phase impulse overvoltage measured at the terminal of a 10 kV distribution line when the impulse current was injected into the phase conductor of the distribution line. The overvoltage observation station was installed at the terminal of the line to record the three-phase overvoltage waveforms. It is shown that the struck phase overvoltage consists of three components including the negative pulse, the stage of residual voltage maintenance and the overshoot oscillation part. The observed negative peak values of the struck phase overvoltage range from −85.4 kV to −96.0 kV in three different injected impulse levels at 90,120,150 kV charging voltage. The duration of residual voltage depends on the duration time of injected current. Furthermore, there is a strong positive relationship between the oscillation amplitude of the struck phase overvoltage and the injected current amplitude. The peak amplitudes of three-phase overvoltage always have the following magnitude relationship: struck phase C > induced phase B > induced phase A. The voltage coupling coefficients of induced phases will not exceed 0.4. The test method proposed in this paper will be helpful to the research on the lightning overvoltage response characteristics of the distribution line and the protection analysis of arresters. State-of-charge (SoC) imbalance and bus voltage deviation are two of the main problems in autonomous dc microgrids. Based on this concern, this paper presents an improved dual-quadrant SoC weighted control strategy and a distributed optimization control method to achieve SoC balance, ensuring accurate power-sharing and bus voltage recovery. Firstly, this paper couples the injected/released power with the current SoC and observed average SoC value to weight the droop coefficient, which is based on the charge/discharge mode for the energy storage system. Then a secondary controller is designed based on distributed optimal control to eliminate the bus voltage deviation caused by the line impedance difference. The proposed optimal control method optimizes the average bus voltage to the nominal value and achieve accurate power-sharing by constructing the correlated variables and voltage independent intermediate variables exchanged among bulk energy storage units (ESUs). Since the voltage observer cannot accurately observe the true average bus voltage under the communication delay, the proposed distributed optimal control method without the voltage observer can ensure that the average bus voltage is optimized to the nominal value, thus improving the robustness of the control system. Virtual synchronous generator (VSG)-based control approaches for AC machine drivers have attracted much attention in recent years. The contradiction between the strong motor loading capacity and the small DC voltage fluctuation is disregarded in previous studies. A larger virtual inertia is required to raise the torque gain and drive the motor with heavier loads, thus resulting in greater DC voltage variations. A systematic method is proposed for the optimal design of the virtual inertia for VSG-based motor starting systems to achieve the maximal motor loading capacity and the low DC voltage fluctuation in this paper. Firstly, the relationship between the virtual inertia and the loading capacity is revealed on the basis of the closed-loop analysis. Considering the DC voltage variation, the constraint on the maximal value of the virtual inertia is proposed from the energy-balance perspective despite the unknown contribution of the DC capacitors to the virtual inertia. To fully exploit the energy storage capacity of the DC capacitors and raise the upper limit of the virtual inertia under the same permitted DC voltage variation, a modified DC voltage reference is introduced. This paper proposes an optimization approach for day-ahead reactive power planning to improve voltage security in transmission networks. The problem is formulated as a voltage-secure multi-period optimal reactive power dispatch (MP-ORPD) problem. The optimization approach searches for optimal set-points of dynamic and static reactive power (var) resources. Specifically, the output includes set-points for switching shunts, transformer taps, and voltage magnitudes at the regulated buses. The primary goal is to maximize the dynamic reactive power reserve of the system, by minimizing the reactive power supplied by synchronous generators. As the size of the MP-ORPD problem increases significantly with increasing number of contingencies and time periods, efficiency is crucial for practical applications. In this paper, a decomposition technique based on consensus and alternating optimization, where integer variable targets are obtained via MILP, is used to partition the MP-ORPD problem into a set of subproblems, which can be solved in parallel to reduce the computation time. The proposed MP-ORPD problem and its solution algorithm are integrated into the EPRI-VCA software. The results of various power networks of large electric utilities in the Eastern interconnection demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in providing preventive control schedules. A Hybrid AC/DC microgrid (MG) can integrate distributed generation sources and distributed loads on the AC and DC side of the MG by eliminating many unnecessary power conversion devices, which is more flexible and efficient. However, to achieve reliable and economic operation of a hybrid AC/DC MG is challenging due to its complex structure. In this paper, a novel distributed event-triggered hierarchical control strategy is proposed to improve the economic operation of a hybrid AC/DC MG. For the primary control, distributed local controls of AC DGs, DC DGs, and interlinking converters (ICs) are realized by adopting the droop control method. For the secondary control, the distributed economic dispatch, distributed average bus voltage discovery, and distributed proportional power-sharing algorithms are first proposed; then, control objectives of voltage and frequency restoration and economic operation of the hybrid AC/DC MG are realized based upon the developed algorithms. Furthermore, the distributed secondary control is built upon an event-triggered mechanism developed in this paper, which can reduce the communication burden. Microgrid's voltage regulation is of particular importance during both grid-connected and islanded modes of operation. Especially, during the islanded mode, when the support from the upstream grid is lost, stable voltage regulation is vital for the reliable operation of critical loads. This paper proposes a robust and data-driven control approach for secondary voltage control of AC microgrids in the presence of uncertainties. In order to achieve the purpose of extending the speed range and reducing power electronics devices for the permanent-magnet linear motor drive system, a half-centralized open-end winding (OEW) topology is studied for rail transit applications in this paper. In this topology, compared with the traditional OEW topology, the number of voltage-source-inverters (VSIs) can be reduced from four to three to drive two OEW movers and all these VSIs share a common dc bus voltage. In order to improve the steady-state performances, a four-vector phase model predictive voltage control (FV-PMPVC) is proposed in this paper. Due to the spatial distribution of phase voltage vector (PVV), an orthometric synthesis principle (OSP) is proposed to calculated the duration time for the vector synthesis, which reduces the computation burden and enhances the robustness. Comparing the existing control method, FV-PMPVC can get similar dynamic performances but better steady-state performances. Additionally, the half-centralized topology using FV-PMPVC can have same speed range while less VSIs are required. The effectiveness of FV-PMPVC is verified by experimental results. The commutation failure (CF) is the most common fault in line-commutated high voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) systems that may lead to the transient overvoltage in the sending-side system. In the worst condition, the CF may lead to large-scale wind turbine tripping. To resolve this problem, the mathematical relationship between the reactive power consumed by the rectifier and DC voltage, DC current is derived. Then, a transient overvoltage calculation method is proposed in this paper. Furthermore, the mechanism of transient overvoltage caused by the CF is analyzed; it is revealed that the reason for three times transient overvoltage is the rapid decrease of the reactive power consumed by the rectifier during the CF and the recovery period from the CF. This paper proposes a constant reactive power control (CRPC) to inhibit transient overvoltage of the sending-side AC system. The proposed CRPC can increase the reactive power consumed by the rectifier, reduce the exchange reactive power between AC and DC systems, and suppress the transient overvoltage. A simulation model in PSCAD serves to verify the proposed CRPC on the transient overvoltage suppression in the situation of different fault types, fault duration, fault severity and short circuit ratio (SCR). This paper proposes a novel inertia-enhanced distributed control method to complement the inertia of microgrids. The rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) and the rate of change of voltage (RoCoV) are employed in this paper to quantify the frequency inertia and voltage inertia, respectively. Then, a fully distributed algorithm with constrained changing rates is proposed. By bounding the changing rates of frequency and voltage during the consensus control, the algorithm can address the consensus problem while enhancing the inertia of microgrids. Compared with most inertia control methods, the proposed method can utilize the reserve power of scattered DGs to supply inertia. Besides, it performs better under disturbances and delays than conventional distributed control methods. Collaborative control of power converters operating in microgrids with unbalanced single-phase loads is difficult to achieve, considering that the voltages and currents have positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence components. In this paper, a new control scheme for collaborative control of four-leg microgrids is proposed. The main advantage of the proposed methodology is simplicity, because the sharing of the powers produced by the positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence voltage and currents is simple to achieve using the easy to implement and well-known droop control algorithms, i.e., as those based on $P$ – $\omega$ and $Q$ – $v$ droop control. The proposed droop algorithms do not require high bandwidth communication channels and the application of virtual impedances, whose design usually demands extensive simulation work, is not required. Three secondary control systems are also analyzed, discussed, and implemented in this paper to regulate the frequency, voltage, and phase at the point of common coupling (PCC), to achieve a balanced 50-Hz three-phase voltage supply in the PCC during steady-state operation. For these secondary control systems, single-phase phase-locked loop based on quadrature signal generators are implemented. Small signal modeling and design are discussed in this paper. Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) have achieved to enhance the flexibility of modern AC power systems, by providing fast, reliable and controllable solutions to steer the power flows and voltages in the network. The proliferation of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems is leading to the opportunity of interconnecting several HVDC systems forming HVDC Supergrids. Such grids can eventually evolve to meshed systems which interconnect a number of different AC power systems and large scale offshore wind (or other renewable sources) power plants and clusters. While such heavily meshed systems can be considered futuristic and will not certainly happen in the near future, the sector is witnessing initial steps in this direction. In order to ensure the flexibility and controllability of meshed DC grids, the shunt connected AC-DC converters can be combined with additional simple and flexible DC-DC converters which can directly control current and power through the lines. The proposed DC-DC converters can provide a range of services to the HVDC grid, including power flow control capability, ancillary services for the HVDC grid or adjacent grids, stability improvement, oscillation damping, pole balancing and voltage control. The present paper presents relevant developments from industry and academia in the direction of the development of these converters, considering technical concepts, converter functionalities and possible integration with other existing systems. The increasing use of induction motors (IMs) with variable frequency drives for industrial process control and automation has necessitated the need to evaluate their energy efficiency in the presence of voltage and current harmonics. As the determination of IM efficiency is becoming mandatory in many countries, there is a need to develop a testing approach that eliminates inaccuracies due to the operator. This paper presents an automated efficiency testing procedure developed to mitigate the adverse effect of varying technical skill and competence levels of testing personnel on efficiency test results. This is a particularly useful development considering the recently proposed IEC/TS 60034-2-3 methodology which specifies identical tests between sinusoidal supply and converter operation. A comparison of several manual and automated efficiency tests on a 55-kW IM highlighted improvements in repeatability, correlation, and temperature variation due to the latter. In addition, the advanced data acquisition and computation capability of the measurement device used in the developed test rig provides an excellent platform to investigate the dynamic operation of IM drives. The uneven power loss distribution among the semiconductor devices is one critical issue of the three-level neutral-point clamped converter. Besides, different operating conditions will result in different loss distribution profiles. The case with low power factor and high modulation usage, which is common in the static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) application, has not been paid much attention to in the literature. In this paper, the power loss distribution under this condition is discussed. And a novel carrier-based modulation technique is proposed to balance the power loss distribution and reduce the power loss in the most stressed device. In addition, an active neutral-point (NP) voltage balancing control strategy is also proposed based on the proposed modulation scheme. Simulation and laboratory results are presented to verify the performances of the proposed modulation technique in power loss redistribution and NP voltage control. This paper proposes a new battery management system (BMS) for a series string of battery cells. The proposed control structure is based on the duality of the adaptive droop control theory used in dc micro-grid connected sources. An adaptive virtual admittance is used in this paper similar to the virtual resistance control structure used with dc micro-grid connected sources. The virtual admittance value is adjusted according to the associated state of charge for every connected battery cell. The presented BMS control structure yields higher reliability compared to the conventional ones due to its decentralization features and its communication-less ability. Thus, balanced power-sharing is realized among the connected battery cells during charging/discharging conditions. The stability of the proposed control is analyzed using the small signal model. While much attention was given in the literature to improve the fault ride through (FRT) capability of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind energy conversion system (WECS) during various faults at the grid side, not much attention was given to investigate and improve the performance of the DFIG-WECS under ferroresonance conditions. This paper investigates the impact of ferroresonance on the overall performance of a DFIG-WECS. The paper also presents a new technique to improve the high voltage ride through capability of the investigated system under such condition. The proposed technique relies on incorporating a superconducting coil within the dc-link of the DFIG grid-side and rotor-side converters. Energy exchange between the coil and the system is controlled through regulating the duty cycle of the dc-chopper interfacing the coil with the dc-link. In this regard, a simple but yet effective proportional-integral (PI) controller is employed to regulate the dc-chopper duty cycle. Parameters of the PI controller are optimized using elephant herding optimization algorithm. The hybrid LCC/VSC cascaded HVDC (HC-HVDC) scheme, in which the LCC is adopted as rectifier, and one LCC in series with multiple paralleled VSC based MMCs is adopted as inverter, combines the advantages of both LCC and VSC-MMC technologies. Presently, a HC-HVDC project is planned to deliver the hydro power from Baihetan to Jiangsu in China. One of the major challenges is to suppress the DC overcurrent issue of VSC-MMCs especially under commutation failure condition of LCC at inverter side. Based on Baihetan-Jiangsu project under construction, the model of HC-HVDC system is developed in PSCAD/EMTDC. In the system, the rectifier employs a dual 12-pulse LCC, while the inverter adopts a hybrid scheme, i.e., one LCC converter in series with three paralleled VSC-MMC converters. This paper addresses the main cause and feature of the DC overcurrent, then proposes an overcurrent suppression control method for HC-HVDC system based on fuzzy clustering and identification approach. And the system transient performances with the proposed control approach are evaluated under AC fault conditions. The results show that the proposed approach can not only suppress the DC overcurrent following the commutation failure to a certain extent, but also improve the post-fault recovery performance of the overall system. This paper analyzes the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC caused by parametric uncertainty. The unsymmetrical operation is referred to as the condition in which parameters involved in ac power generation are not equal in the phase-legs of the converter. Because existing models in the literature cannot exhibit the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC, new detailed and simplified steady-state models are developed in this paper. In the developed models, the connection between the operation of different phase-legs shows itself when the dc-link impedance is considered. Using the developed models, the parameters that can force the converter to operate in unsymmetrical conditions are identified, and the maximum variation that the converter can tolerate is found. It is shown that even a small parameter variation leads to the leakage of the ac circulating current into the dc-link, which is not acceptable. By conducting various case studies, the impacts of the dc-link length, the transmitted power, and the conversion ratio on the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC are characterized. The results showed that the converter would be more sensitive to the parameter variation as these parameters increase. A modular multilevel converter control system, based on converter energy storage, is proposed in this paper for two different control modes: active power and dc voltage. The proposed control system decouples the submodule (SM) capacitor voltages from the dc bus voltage. One of the practical applications is the management of active redundant SMs. A practical HVDC system with 401-level MMCs, including 10% redundancy in MMC SMs, is used for validating and demonstrating the advantages of the proposed control system. This paper introduces the work undertaken to reliably use off-the-shelf differentiating voltage probes attached to coaxial transmission lines. The results obtained prove that indeed such probes are a valid and simple instrument for measuring nanosecond and subnanosecond voltage impulses. As a bonus, this paper also highlighted an important challenging phenomenon that appears whenever an attempt is made to measure fast voltage impulses with a differentiating probe positioned too close to the closing switch of a pulse forming line generator. Volt-VAR optimization (VVO) has been investigated extensively in power systems. However, under the era of integrated energy systems (IES), the growing interdependencies between different energy systems complicate traditional VVO. This is further hardened by incurred gas quality problems due to the hydrogen injection in IES, produced by widely applied power-to-gas (P2G) facilitates that couple between power and gas systems. This paper develops a two-stage volt-VAR-pressure optimization (VVPO) model for PV-penetrated IES to manage the variation of system voltages while managing gas quality indices. In addition to the traditional voltage regulating devices, P2G facilities, which can mitigate fluctuating PV output via converting the surplus generation into hydrogen, are also used for voltage management. A two-stage distributionally robust optimization (DRO) based on moment information is utilized to model PV uncertainty. A semidefinite programming model is formulated and finally solved by the constraint generation algorithm. A 33-bus-20-node IES is used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed VVPO on voltage management, ensured gas quality with high economic efficiency. The proposed VVPO is applicable to injecting other green gases into gas systems while ensuring power quality and enable system operators to provide low-cost but high-quality multi-energy to customers. This paper presents a method for controlling the voltage of inverter-based Microgrids by proposing a new scale-free distributed cooperative controller. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed distributed cooperative controller is scale-free where is independent of any information about the communication system and the number of distributed generators, as such it works for any Microgrids with any size. Moreover, the communication network is modeled by a general time-varying graph which enhances the resilience of the proposed protocol against communication link failure, data packet loss, and arbitrarily fast plug and play operation in the presence of arbitrarily finite communication delays as the protocol does not require the knowledge of the upper bound on the delay. The paper introduces the concept of complex frequency. The imaginary part of the complex frequency is the variation with respect of a synchronous reference of the local bus frequency as commonly defined in power system studies. The real part is defined based on the variation of the voltage magnitude. The latter term is crucial for the correct interpretation and analysis of the variation of the frequency at each bus of the network. The paper also develops a set of differential equations that describe the link between complex powers and complex frequencies at network buses in transient conditions. No simplifications are assumed except for the usual approximations of the models utilized for the transient stability analysis of power systems. Network partition in complex power networks is essential for the var-voltage control. Traditional partition methods such as Ward method are applied in practical power networks, but they are unable to evaluate the quality of partition results. Moreover, they lack efficiency when dealing with large-scale networks. Since complex operation characteristics and topology have emerged in recent power systems, the power grid partition requires higher efficiency and quality. Therefore, this paper proposes a fast network partition method with a balanced-depth-based community detection algorithm. Its aim is to significantly improve the efficiency of partition while maintaining high quality of partition, with which the inter-zone coupling is minimized while the intra-zone coupling is maximized. In the meantime, a surrogate-optimization-based selection algorithm is proposed to select the zonal pilot bus, based on which the secondary voltage control method is used to evaluate the quality of partition. Results from four case studies conducted in various power networks with different sizes, as compared to other partition methods, validate the high efficiency and high quality of the proposed power grid partition approach. This paper establishes an instantaneous voltage model to illustrate the dynamic characteristics of grid voltage in electromagnetic time scale affected by power-electronic interfaced voltage regulatory devices with two typical categories of control systems, i.e., power-current cascading control and power synchronization control, exemplified by the STATCOM and virtual synchronous condenser (VSCON) respectively. In this paper, a linearized instantaneous voltage model is firstly established to analyze the impact paths of control loops in the STATCOM and VSCON. Based on the model, the dynamic process of grid voltage is divided into three stages. Various factors on the dynamic process of grid voltage are analyzed, especially cascading control loops prior to the functioning of AC voltage control. Moreover, stiffness characteristic is proposed to evaluate the effects of power electronic interfaced voltage regulatory devices with different control structures. This paper presents an evolution of control systems of Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) focusing on the internal voltages and currents dynamics. MMCs have passive components inside the converter that create extra dynamics compared to conventional VSCs. Some control schemes that do not consider these internal dynamics may still stabilize the system asymptotically thanks to the linearisation in the modulation step. However these control schemes are less robust because they are prone to poor damped oscillations on the dc side of the converter. The MMC circuit and energy relationships are presented in this paper. Along with a gradual development of the energy based control, the important roles of each internal dynamics are clearly demonstrated. The aim of this paper is to investigate the sensorless voltage control schemes for the promising wound-rotor brushless doubly-fed induction generator (BDFIG) in both the stand-alone and grid-connected systems. For sensorless target, a new rotor position observer using the space vector flux relations of BDFIG is suggested. The proposed sensorless algorithm does not require any additional observers for obtaining the generator speed by directly detecting the rotor position, which may reduce the cost of the overall control system. For the voltage control purpose, a direct voltage control (DVC) scheme is applied for the stand-alone systems. However, this control strategy did not handle the control of the generated-voltage phase angle and also did not consider the phase sequence issue which are very essential provisions for the smooth connection target in grid-connected applications. Hence, DVC strategy cannot guarantee all the intended provisions for a soft and smooth connection process with the grid side and therefore, an effective grid-synchronization algorithm is proposed. A comprehensive analysis to confirm the functionality of the proposed control strategies is discussed through both simulation and experimental results. The presented study in this paper verifies the efficacy of the proposed schemes for sensorless voltage control target of BDFIG in both the stand-alone and grid-connected applications with a good transient behavior. This paper proposes a single-phase ac–dc–ac converter composed of a transformer and two three-leg converters connected in series. The proposed converter allows to supply the load with a voltage with constant amplitude and frequency, and to operate with the grid current with low harmonic distortion and high power factor. In addition, the converter can be used to mitigate fundamental overvoltage and voltage harmonics at the grid. The system model, regions of operation, a power flow analysis, and a method to regulate the dc-link voltages using the voltage vector redundancies are given. In this paper, we propose a novel reconfigurable ferroelectric FET (R-FEFET), which can reconfigure its operation between volatile and nonvolatile modes during run-time by dynamically modulating its hysteresis. The R-FEFET comprises of two gates with ferroelectric (FE) in both the gate stacks. One of these terminals serves as a regular gate, while the other is used as a control to introduce reconfigurability. Employing Landau–Khalatnikov equation-based FEFET model, we extensively analyze the device characteristics in both FinFET and planar technologies. We show that by changing the control voltage between 0 and 1 V, the hysteresis width (HW) can be modulated between 1.1 and 0.3 V. In addition, we show the device characteristics and advantages that R-FEFETs possess to overcome the drawbacks encountered with gate leakage in standard FEFETs. The hold margins in the nonvolatile mode of R-FEFETs increase by ~ $10\times $ with respect to standard FEFETs, and the drive current strengths in the volatile mode show 13% improvements when compared to standard FETs. An improved hybrid unified power flow controller (IHUPFC) is developed in this paper to control the power flow and increase the utilization rate of the existing transmission lines. The IHUPFC is composed of an improved “Sen” transformer (IST) and a small capacity unified power flow controller (UPFC). After a detailed introduction of the structure and voltage regulation performance of the IST, this paper derives the capacity relationship between the IST and the UPFC. Then, this paper introduces the technology of the IHUPFC in power flow regulation and transmission capability improvement. Besides, the advantages of the IHUPFC in performance and structure are analyzed. The IST has simpler structure and larger power flow control area than a “Sen” transformer, and the IHUPFC provides a continuous active and reactive power flow control. In this paper, the damping ability of point of common coupling (PCC) voltage feedforward is analyzed in order to improve the stability of current control, in which interference with an LCL filter of a battery energy storage system (BESS) and synchronous inductance of a diesel generator is considered in a stand-alone microgrid. A BESS can be charged by a diesel generator when the state of charge of the battery bank is significantly insufficient and where the BESS operates with constant current constant voltage control and the diesel generator provides constant voltage constant frequency control. In this case, large synchronous when the diesel generator is in a steady state may severely cause the instability of current control. The stability analysis should be required to guarantee the paralleled operation between BESS and diesel generator. An equivalent circuit model of the diesel generator is needed to perform these processes. To bring availability of analysis, this paper considers a simple equivalent circuit model considering synchronous inductance in the steady state, and it has very large inductance corresponding 1 per unit. The resonance issue is attenuated by the damping ability of PCC voltage feedforward where it is possible to improve the stability by appropriately adjusting the gain of the voltage feedforward. The effects of the synchronous inductance and the feedforward loop are analyzed in the s-domain and z-domain. The gain of the voltage feedforward is determined to be 0.2 and 0.4 based on stability analysis. To verify the validity of the damping effect of PCC voltage feedforward, a demonstration site is constructed and the stability is verified through simulation and experiment with a full model, and total harmonic distortion of current is improved to 2.44%.
