Satellite infrared detectors cannot penetrate clouds, especially precipitating clouds. Improving precipitation estimation accuracy based on infrared brightness temperature has always been important but challenging. In this paper, based on the infrared brightness temperature of the Advanced Geosynchronous Radiation Imager (AGRI) onboard China's Feng‐Yun 4A satellite, we develop and evaluate a new precipitation estimation method. First, using static data, physical characteristics of clouds, cloud image texture features, temporal motion features, and AGRI infrared channel brightness temperature, we construct features for a machine learning model. Then, we develop precipitation estimation methods. Precipitation is estimated in two steps: classification and regression. We employ a random forest classification model to identify whether there is precipitation in a given field of view. If there is precipitation, a multi‐model ensemble regression learning method is used to estimate the areas with this precipitation. The ensemble learning method uses convex optimization to integrate prediction results based on the optimization of hyperparameters of five basic models (i.e., those of random forest, XGBoost, LightGBM, decision tree, and extra tree models). Furthermore, two regression stacking ensemble models—the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (herein referred to as Stacking1‐LASSO) and K‐nearest neighbor (herein referred to as Stacking2‐KNN)—are used to predict the results of the aforementioned basic models. The results of basic models are used as inputs of these two stacking models. Finally, based on the Integrated Multi‐satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) precipitation product and rain gauge precipitation data, we conduct precipitation estimation experiments and evaluate our methods. The results show that ensemble learning models have greater accuracy in estimating precipitation than the basic models. When using IMERG precipitation as the target precipitation, ensemble learning models can estimate the central area of heavy precipitation during typhoons Ampil and Maria. The ensemble learning estimation effect is better than that of Stacking2‐KNN. Moreover, when rain gauge data is used as the target precipitation, ensemble learning can also estimate the center of heavy precipitation and with good consistency with recorded satellite brightness temperature data. Coal mining subsidence is a universal environmental-geological problem in mining areas. By selecting the Shen-Dong coal mining subsidence area as the research field, this paper studies the changes in precipitation infiltration recharge in the circumstances of coal mining subsidence by means of field geological investigation and laboratory simulation experiments, which is expected to provide a scientific basis for eco-environmental restoration in the mining area. The results indicate that at the unstable stage of subsidence, three types of subsidence in the Shen-Dong mining area have positive effects on the precipitation infiltration recharge, and the type of full-thickness bedrock subsidence has the greatest influence. In the stable stage of subsidence, the precipitation infiltration process after long-term drought and the moisture migration in the aeration zone undergo three different stages: evaporation-infiltration before precipitation, infiltration-upward infiltration-infiltration during precipitation and evaporation-infiltration after precipitation. During a heavy rainfall infiltration process, the wetting front movement in fine sand, coarse sand and dualistic structure of fine-coarse sand consists of two stages: the stage of wetting front movement during precipitation, in which the wetting front movement distance has linear relationship with the depth, and the stage of wetting front movement after precipitation, in which the wetting front movement distance has the power function relationship with the depth. The wetting front movement velocity is influenced by the rainfall amount and the lithology in the aeration zone. However, as the depth increases, the movement velocity will decay exponentially. The current study investigates the variability of vertical structure of precipitation in the Huaihe River Basin (HRB) of China. The precipitation characteristics have been revealed by the long-term observations of vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR) from the first spaceborne precipitation radar (PR) onboard the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)'s Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite. This study has statistically analyzed the latest TRMM 2A-23 and 2A-25 products (version 7, released in 2012) with ∼15 years time span (from 11 December 1997 to 19 August 2012). First, the spatial and seasonal variations of storm height and freezing level have been investigated. The results show a climatological relation connecting the storm height with the rainfall rate in HRB. Second, mean VPRs have been studied for the stratiform and convective precipitation. The VPR variability has been analyzed for different seasons and rain intensities. Third, the characteristics of rain intensification and weakening in the vertical direction have been examined by the statistical analysis of VPR slope below the melting layer. The results show that the rainfall tends to be reduced (or intensified) with the height changing downward in the light (or moderate and heavy) precipitating clouds, no matter stratiform or convection. Finally, the S-band climatological VPRs have been characterized by converting the VPR from Ku-band to S-band. Considering the wide application of national radar network for weather surveillance in China, the developed S-band climatological VPRs can be potentially applied in a VPR correction scheme to improve the ground radar-based quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) in this river basin.
