Recent trends in precipitation and streamflow in the United States have become a particular focus of hydroclimatic research. The U.S. Hydro-Climatic Data Network (HCDN) has proven to be especially useful for the analysis of long-term streamflow trends. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists selected sites for inclusion in the HCDN from the USGS stream-gauge network on the basis of streamflows being relatively free of nonclimatic anthropogenic influences. Consequently, most previous analyses of flow trends at those sites have either implicitly or explicitly attributed the trends to climate change and variability. In this paper, trends in seasonal and annual precipitation, and annual 7-day low, mean, and peak flows are examined for 48 medium-sized HCDN streams in the upper Mississippi (UM) water-resource region over 1939--2008. Using the concept of precipitation elasticity of flow, it is shown that the observed magnitudes of statistically significant increases in mean and low flows were up to a factor of 3 greater than expected from observed precipitation increases alone. Peak flows increased less than expected, and in the case of the Driftless Area at the center of the UM basin, decreased despite increased precipitation. It is proposed that the differences between expected and observed changes in streamflow can be explained by rural land-use changes in this principally agricultural region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A collection of eight operational global analyses over a 27-month period have been processed to common data structures to facilitate comparisons among the analyses and global observational datasets. The present study evaluated the global precipitation, outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) at the top of the atmosphere, and basin-scale precipitation over the United States. In addition, a multimodel ensemble was created from a linear average of the available data, as close to the analysis time as each system permitted. The results show that the monthly global precipitation and OLR from the multimodel ensemble compares generally better to the observations than any single analysis. Likewise, the daily precipitation from the ensemble exhibits better statistical comparison (in space and time) to gauge observations over the Mississippi River basin. However, the comparisons have seasonality, when the members of the ensemble exhibit generally more skill, during winter. There is notably higher skill of the summertime basin precipitation by the ensemble. Using the global precipitation and OLR, the sensitivity was tested to selectively choose the members with the best statistical comparisons to the reference data. Only small improvements in the statistics were found when comparing a selective ensemble to the full ensemble. Additionally, terms of the global energy budget were compared among the ensemble and to other estimates. The trends of the surface water and energy budget components in the Mississippi River basin from 1948 to 2004 are investigated using a combination of hydrometeorological observations and observation-constrained simulations of the land surface conditions using the latest version of the Community Land Model version 3 (CLM3). The atmospheric forcing data for the CLM3 were constructed by adding the intramonthly variations from the 6-hourly National Centers for Environmental Prediction–National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP–NCAR) reanalysis to observation-based analyses of monthly precipitation, surface air temperature, and cloud cover. The model-based analysis suggests that, for the surface water budget, the observed increase in basin-averaged precipitation is compensated by increases in both runoff and evapotranspiration. For the surface energy budget, the decrease of net shortwave radiation associated with observed increases in cloudiness is compensated by decreases in both net longwave radiation and sensible heat flux, while the latent heat flux increases in association with wetter soil conditions. Both the simulated surface water and energy budgets support the view that evapotranspiration has increased in the Mississippi River basin from 1948 to 2004. Sensitivity experiments show that the precipitation change dominates the evapotranspiration trend, while the temperature and solar radiation changes have only small effects. Large spatial variations within the Mississippi River basin and the contiguous United States are also found.
