Summary DC‐DC converters play a vital role in the integration of renewable energy sources. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) has emerged as a highly promising option for high‐voltage high‐power applications, for DC‐AC and DC‐DC conversion, thanks to its distinctive characteristics. An inherent limitation of using traditional MMC in DC‐DC conversion is the occurrence of arm energy drift, leading to imbalanced voltages across capacitors of submodules (SMs). Many approaches have been presented in the literature to address the energy drift issue during DC‐DC conversion process. In this paper, a novel bidirectional hybrid modular multilevel DC‐DC converter with balanced arm energy has been proposed. The proposed converter consists of one high‐voltage valve and two legs. Each leg is equipped with half‐bridge submodules (HB‐SMs) in the upper arm and full‐bridge submodules (FB‐SMs) in the lower arm. The proposed architecture enables the parallel connection between series‐connected capacitors of the upper arm and series‐connected capacitors of the lower arm during the equalization period. The parallel connectivity enables the energy transfer between the upper and lower arms in the same leg, hence preventing energy drift issues. A detailed illustration of converter operational concept, mathematical analysis, design, and efficiency estimation are presented. The presented simulation and experimental results show the bidirectional power flow ability and the promising behavior of the proposed converter during normal operating conditions with balanced arm energy. Finally, a comparison between the proposed converter and other existing topologies has been made to show the superiority of the proposed converter over the other alternatives. The proposed converter has a lower count of insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) and eliminates the usage of isolating transformers when compared to the energy equalization modules approach. Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) are promising candidates for high‐voltage high‐power applications. The main challenge of the MMCs is the zero‐frequency operation. To achieve a successful DC–DC conversion process with balanced capacitors' voltages with limited voltage ripple, this paper suggests the employment of the conventional two‐leg half‐bridge submodule‐based MMC structure in conjunction with a single bidirectional high‐voltage (HV) valve across the low‐voltage side. In the suggested structure, the HV valve is controlled on and off to ensure energy equalization for the MMC arms. In addition, soft‐switching for the HV valve is proposed to reduce the switching losses. Detailed illustration and design of the proposed concept are presented. In this work, a novel three‐phase unidirectional off‐board Electric Vehicles (EVs) fast charger is proposed. Each phase of the proposed converter consists of a two‐stage converter. The first stage is an AC–DC front‐end converter with power factor correction (PFC) control. The front‐end AC–DC converter is based on an isolated boost converter, which has a boosting capability and provides galvanic isolation. In this stage, parallel‐in parallel‐out isolated boost converter modules are employed in each phase. This enables sharing the current among modules to avoid implementing one module with a high current rating to meet the fast‐charging requirements. The multimodule option provides fault‐ride through capability for the proposed charger. The DC outputs of involved phases, that is, three isolated DC voltages, are fed to three cascaded DC–DC unidirectional buck converters. The charging terminals are used to charge the EV battery through a filter inductor with a charging current controller's aid. A detailed illustration of the suggested closed‐loop controllers is presented to ensure a successful operation for the proposed architecture. A simulation case study for a 25‐kW charger is presented. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is a promising candidate for high-/medium-voltage high-power applications such as medium voltage ac drives due to its modularity, reliability, and scalability. The main challenge of a conventional MMC is low-frequency operation. Capacitor voltage ripple is inversely proportional to the operating frequency. Hence, operating at low frequency necessitates employing large submodule capacitances to limit voltage ripple or the utilization of energy equalization modules (EEMs). The first option negatively affects converter lifetime, and the second option requires a large number of semiconductor devices and isolating transformers. In this article, a modified MMC topology with self-energy equalization is proposed to ensure converter operation with balanced capacitor voltages with low ripple during zero-/low-frequency conditions. Operating with balanced capacitor voltages with low ripple is achieved by maintaining the same energy level in the involved upper and lower arms. Conventional modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are widely used in high power applications due to their various astonishing advantages; however, they fail to achieve balanced capacitor voltage in DC operation. In this paper, a hybrid two‐stage modular DC–DC converter is proposed to solve the issue of unbalanced capacitor voltages. The proposed converter consists of a single‐phase half‐bridge MMC with half‐bridge submodules followed by a medium voltage valves‐based H‐bridge rectifier. The proposed converter is used in medium‐voltage applications such as feeding a DC‐load or interconnection between two DC grids of different voltage levels. The proposed configuration achieves successful DC–DC conversion with a low number of switches, a high conversion ratio with bidirectional power flow, low current stresses, soft switching across the second stage, and low switching losses. The operational concept and the control algorithm have been illustrated in detail. Medium‐/High Voltage DC grids are interesting for the integration of renewable energy sources. DC‐DC conversion systems are highly needed for the development of DC grids. Recently, Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) is the most promising technology for medium‐/high‐voltage applications, but employing the conventional MMC with DC output voltage leads to diversion in the Submodule (SM) capacitor voltages, that is energy drift. This paper proposes a modified modular multilevel DC‐DC converter with self‐energy equalization, which ensures successful DC‐DC conversion with balanced capacitors voltages. In the modified topology, clamping Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) are employed in each arm to enable parallel‐connection of the capacitors in the same arm. During the operation (equalization period), the parallel‐connected upper capacitors are connected to the parallel‐connected lower capacitors in each leg through a small limiting inductor to transfer energy between the arms to ensure balanced capacitor voltages. Nowadays, most of the converters used in high‐power high‐voltage (HV) applications are the conventional modular multilevel converters (MMC). However, in the case of DC‐DC conversion, an imbalance of the capacitor voltages occurs and the conventional MMC fails to operate correctly. This paper introduces an arm current reversal‐based modular multilevel DC‐DC converter, which successfully provides balance among the capacitor voltages while operating in DC‐DC conversion. The proposed configuration is used in medium voltage DC grids to feed DC loads or to interconnect between two DC grids of different voltage levels. The proposed converter is a two‐stage DC‐DC modular converter, which consists of a single‐phase half‐bridge MMC with half‐bridge submodules (HBMMC) followed by a single‐phase H‐bridge MMC with half‐bridge submodules (SMs). The operational concept of the proposed converter is based on reversing the arm current direction and reversing the output terminals with the help of the H‐bridge MMC stage, which ensures the same direction of the voltage at the load terminals. The proposed converter provides a high conversion ratio, bidirectional power flow, simple architecture, and a simple control scheme. Summary: Renewable energy sources (RESs) need power‐electronics‐based converters to deliver the acquired power to the grid. Those converters should provide voltage‐bucking/boosting capabilities to accommodate various grid modes specially for three‐phase distorted commonly unbalanced distribution utility networks. Several power electronic‐based converters have been elaborated to fulfill this high‐demand market. Single‐stage converters are the most dominant in the market where the current source inverters (CSIs), impedance source inverters (ZSIs), and boost inverters are the high‐end candidates. The aspects of cost, footprint, and minimal numbers of active switches, in addition to simplified controllability, build the main challenges that face the evolution of robust renewable energy‐associated grid‐tied converters. This paper presents a novel three‐phase differential‐mode buck‐boost inverter based on two bidirectional buck‐boost DC/DC converters and one differential power processor (DPP) unit. The proposed topology is a single‐stage DC/AC converter offering bucking/boosting capability, with reduced hardware requirements. The proposed topology features a simplified control methodology in addition to reduced size and cost of the hardware setup which makes it more suitable for grid‐tied renewable energy applications. The operation principles, small‐signal model, and control strategy of the proposed topology are also illustrated. Simulation and experimental results are presented in details to verify the topology‐enhanced performance under various operating conditions. Conventional modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are promising converters for high-voltage high-power applications. Unlike DC-AC conversion, DC-DC conversion of MMCs suffers from unbalanced capacitor voltages due to the energy drift problem. In this study, a new modular DC-DC converter is proposed, which consists of front-end half-bridge MMC with half-bridge submodules followed by full-bridge MMC with full-bridge submodules. The proposed modular multilevel DC-DC converter can be used effectively for connecting two different DC voltage levels in high-/medium-voltage DC grids. In this article, three different types of pulse generators based on multimodule boost converter ringing circuit are presented, namely, interleaved, stacked, and interleaved–stacked with full design and operational concept. The interleaved version is advantageous in generating a burst of pulses with moderate voltage magnitude, where the used modules are fed from a common dc source. On the other hand, the stacked multimodule version can be used to generate high-voltage pulsed output from synchronized modules with a moderate voltage rating. This can be done by feeding the modules from isolated dc sources while connecting their outputs in series. Finally, the interleaved–stacked version can be used for generating a burst of pulses with high-voltage magnitude. The presented pulse generators are valid for resistive loads with exponential decay pulses. The suggested pulse generators are simple and require semiconductor devices with moderate voltage ratings. For given pulse specifications, a detailed design for the passive components of each version is presented in this article. The nine-arm modular multilevel converter (9A-MMC) has been recently proposed as a reduced MMC topology variation for six-phase drive applications, with 25% reduction in the number of employed arms and associated components, compared to a standard dual three-phase MMC, however with a limited output voltage amplitude. This paper proposes a hybrid 9A-MMC comprised of half-bridge submodules (SMs) in both the upper and lower arms, and full-bridge SMs in the middle arms. By employing the negative-voltage state of the full-bridge SMs, the hybrid 9A-MMC avoids the limitations imposed on the dc-link voltage utilization, while achieving further reduction in the component count, compared to a standard 9A-MMC with identical half-bridge SMs. The operating principles of the proposed hybrid 9A-MMC are illustrated with mathematical analysis, whereas its characteristics are verified through both simulation and experimentation. In this study, a cost‐effective HVDC shunt tap with low‐number of relatively low‐voltage semiconductor devices and small‐sized passive components is proposed. The proposed architecture is based on employing three single‐phase half‐bridge Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs), where the DC sides of MMCs are connected in series across the total DC‐link voltage. The MMCs are adopted instead of conventional Two‐Level Voltage Source Converters (2L‐VSCs) to avoid the complications of series connection of Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs). The involved MMCs in the suggested architecture are operated with the conventional 2L modulation, which results in insignificant arm inductors and Sub‐Modules (SMs) capacitances (in range of µH and µF, respectively). This, in turn, affects positively the converter cost and footprint. Each arm of the involved MMCs can be considered as a high‐voltage valve of a 2L‐VSC. To maintain the balance of SMs capacitors, each arm of the involved (N + 1)‐level MMC has an extra SM (a balancing SM) to select N out of N + 1 SMs during the turn‐off condition. This paper proposes a hybrid-boost Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) for the Medium-Voltage (MV) Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) employed in subsea applications, such as oil and gas recovery. In the presented architecture, a hybrid-boost MMC with a reduced number of semiconductor devices driving a multiphase Induction Machine (IM) is investigated. The stepped output voltage generated by the MMC reduces or eliminates the filtering requirements. Moreover, the boosting capability of the proposed architecture eliminates the need for bulky low-frequency transformers at the converter output terminals. A detailed illustration of the hybrid-boost MMC operation, the expected limitations/constraints, and the voltage balancing technique are presented. This paper proposes a medium-/high-voltage high-power hybrid modular dc–dc converter to interconnect two different dc-voltage levels in medium-/high-voltage dc grids. The converter consists of half-bridge submodules (SMs) rated at a moderate voltage level, i.e., series connection of semiconductor devices is avoided while connecting two high dc-voltage levels. The proposed architecture provides self-balancing operation, i.e., unlike conventional modular converters, no need for capacitor voltage measurement, which enhances the system reliability and simplicity. Sequential charging/discharging of SMs capacitors is adopted in the proposed approach to ensure a self-balanced operation. In this paper, a dc–ac buck converter is proposed as a grid-side converter in high voltage dc (HVdc) transmission systems for high-power renewable energy source grid integration. The proposed architecture consists of multimodules of half-bridge voltage source converters (HB-VSCs). The dc terminals of the HB-VSCs are connected in series across the entire dc link (i.e., capacitor tapped), whereas their ac outputs are connected to multiwinding transformers to provide the three-phase terminals for ac grid integration. The proposed grid-connected capacitor-tapped multimodule converter (CT-MC) architecture, inspired from the HVdc shunt tap proposed by ABB, provides a dc–ac conversion with a relatively moderate voltage rating of semiconductor devices. It also provides operation with a lower number of semiconductor devices, gate driver circuits, voltage sensors, and lower total MVA rating of semiconductor devices (67%) compared with the conventional three-phase HB modular multilevel converter, which positively affects the system cost and reduces the computational burden of the employed controller. In this paper, the operational concept and control of the CT-MC are presented along with a capacitor voltage balancing approach. Simulation results are presented during normal and abnormal conditions to show the viability of the proposed architecture. Here, a new bi‐directional hybrid modular non‐isolated DC–DC converter is proposed where it consists of a boost converter (BC) fed from the high‐voltage (HV) side. At the BC output stage, a certain number of half bridge submodules (HB‐SMs) is connected across the BC switch. During the turn‐on period of BC switch, the HB‐SMs are connected sequentially to the low‐voltage (LV) side, which results in charging/discharging their capacitors from/into the LV side. While, during the turn‐off period, the LV side is bypassed and the HB‐SMs capacitors are connected in series across the BC output stage, which results in discharging/charging them into/from the HV side. The power flow is controlled in both directions by controlling the duty cycle. The proposed configuration provides self‐balancing operation thanks to the sequential connection of HB‐SMs capacitors, and it also provides the ability to operate with high conversion ratios. Conventionally, in order to reduce the ac components of the dc-link capacitors of the two-level Half-Bridge Voltage Source Inverter (HB-VSI), high dc-link capacitances are required. This necessitates the employment of short-lifetime and bulky electrolytic capacitors. In this paper, an analysis for the performance of low dc-link capacitances-based HB-VSI is presented to elucidate its ability to generate an enhanced fundamental output voltage magnitude without increasing the voltage rating of the involved switches. This feature is constrained by the load displacement factor. The introduced enhancement is due to the ac components of the capacitors' voltages. The presented approach can be employed for multi-phase systems through using multi single-phase HB-VSI(s). Mathematical analysis of the proposed approach is presented in this paper. To ensure a successful operation of the proposed approach, a closed loop current controller is examined. An expression for the critical dc-link capacitance, which is the lowest dc-link capacitance that can be employed for unipolar capacitors' voltages, is derived. This paper presents a buck-boost converter-based bipolar pulse generator, which is able to generate bipolar exponential pulses across a resistive load. The concept of the proposed approach depends on operating the involved buck-boost converters in discontinuous current conduction mode with high-voltage gain and enhanced efficiency. A full design of the pulse generator and its passive components is presented to ensure generating the pulses with the desired specifications (rise time, pulse width, and pulse magnitude) for a given load resistance and input dc voltage. In case of moderate pulsed output voltages (i.e. few of kV), one module of the presented bipolar generator can be employed. While in case of high-voltage pulsed output, multi-module version can be employed, where each module is fed from an isolated dc source and their outputs are connected in series. Simulation models for the proposed approach are built to elucidate their performance in case of one-module as well as multi-module based generator. In this paper a Four-Arm Three-Phase MMC (4A-TPMMC)-based DC–AC converter is proposed. The proposed converter generates a three-phase output voltage using a lower number of components, which reduces the converter complexity and cost. The concept of the proposed approach is presented in this paper. A comparison between the conventional Six-Arm Three-Phase MMC (6A-TPMMC) and the proposed 4A-TPMMC is conducted. Two simulation models are built, one for the 6A-TPMMC, and the other for the proposed 4A-TPMMC. The simulations are carried out for the same number of submodules per arm and the same AC output voltage magnitude. Moreover, a case study using the proposed 4A-TPMMC, as a three-phase medium voltage motor drive, is considered. Conventional Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) with Half-Bridge Sub-Modules (HB-SMs) can be used effectively as a solid-state high-voltage pulse generator to chop a high-voltage dc input into a bipolar pulsed output voltage without employing neither high-voltage semiconductor switches nor series-connected switches. Nonetheless, its boosting capability is constrained. In this paper, a hybrid boost MMC-based bipolar high-voltage pulse generator is proposed where each arm contains a combination of Full-Bridge SMs (FB-SMs) and HB-SMs. The HB-SMs and FB-SMs have the same rated voltage. The proposed approach is able to generate bipolar pulses, and operates with a wide range of boosting capability. The conventional unipolar Marx generator can be employed for bipolar pulsed electric field by adding a high-voltage H-bridge at the load side which necessitates stacked switches. Alternatively, bipolar Marx generator with low-voltage switches can be employed. The existing bipolar Marx generators are typically fed from dc supplies, where polarized capacitors are employed. The capacitance of involved capacitors is selected such that the total energy stored in the generator's capacitors is higher than the bipolar pulse energy. As a result, polarized capacitors with relatively high capacitances are required. In addition, a high number of controlled switches per stage are required (at least four switches per stage). In this paper, a new solid-state bipolar Marx pulse generator with only three controlled switches per stage is proposed. The proposed generator is fed from sinusoidal/square ac voltage and non-polarized capacitors with low capacitance are employed. The proposed bipolar Marx-generator can be used effectively with resistive loads for exponential pulse generation. A detailed illustration of the proposed approach is presented and a discussion, to elucidate the differences between the proposed pulse generator and the other existing ones, are presented. In this study, a new transformerless wind energy conversion system to integrate high‐power multi‐phase permanent magnet wind generators to medium‐voltage local grids is presented. The proposed converter topology consists of multi‐half‐bridge modules with a high ac–direct current (dc) boosting capability. Each phase of an open winding multi‐phase generator is connected to the ac side of a half‐bridge module, whereas the dc sides of the half‐bridge modules are connected in series forming the high‐voltage dc‐link output. The proposed architecture facilitates the employment of semiconductor switches with a relatively low‐voltage rating, which equals the dc‐link voltage divided by the number of generator phases. This paper presents a new high-voltage pulse generator, which is based on positive and negative buck-boost (BB) converters fed from a relatively low voltage dc supply. The proposed generator is able to generate unipolar or bipolar high-voltage pulses via operating the BB converters with series or parallel connected outputs respectively using a common input dc source. The components of each converter are rated at half of the pulsed voltage magnitude in the unipolar mode. The converters in the proposed pulse generator operate in discontinuous conduction mode. This enhances system efficiency, as the circuit only operates when it is desired to generate a pulsed output voltage, otherwise the circuit is switched to idle mode with zero current. Pulsed electric field is a commonly used and effective disinfection method in drinking water treatment applications. In this paper, a transformerless unipolar/bipolar high-voltage pulse generator is presented with well-regulated pulsed output voltage for drinking water treatment via underwater pulsed corona discharge. The proposed high-voltage pulse generator is fed from a relatively low-voltage dc supply. Then, capacitor–diode voltage multiplier centrally fed from a dc–dc boost converter is used to elevate the input voltage to a proper high-voltage level. Finally, a modular multilevel converter is employed to chop the elevated voltage into unipolar or bipolar pulsed output voltage (based on the user selection). The suggested arrangement provides a high-voltage gain with relatively low-voltage components, i.e., neither high-voltage nor series-connected components are needed in the proposed approach. A comparison between the proposed approach and the other Marx-Based pulse generators has been held to show the merits of the proposed approach. Bipolar repetitive high-voltage pulse generators are commonly used in modern pulsed power applications. Conventionally, bipolar high-voltage pulses can be generated by adding a high-voltage H-bridge at the output stage of a unipolar high-voltage pulse generator which increases complexity and cost of the bipolar high-voltage pulse generator. In this paper, a boost-inverter-based bipolar high-voltage pulse generator with high-voltage gain is proposed. The proposed generator can provide high-voltage bipolar output pulses with the desired specifications from a low input dc voltage. The proposed generator is based on employing two bidirectional boost dc–dc converters, where the load is connected differentially between the boost converters’ output terminals. In the proposed approach, four controlled switches are required. Only two out of these four switches are rated at the high-voltage output level which affects positively the system cost. A detailed illustration of the proposed approach along with the design of its passive components is presented in this study. The half‐bridge modular multilevel converter (HB‐MMC) is one of the most promising topologies for high‐voltage direct current (HVDC) systems. Unlike full‐bridge MMC (FB‐MMC) and clamp double sub‐module MMC (CDSM‐MMC), HB‐MMCs are defenceless against DC side faults. Different types of DC circuit breakers (DC CBs) assisted with arrester banks/damping resistors such as solid‐state CB and hybrid DC CBs can be used to interrupt the DC fault current. Arrester banks are used to protect against overvoltage after interrupting the fault current and in turn to demagnetise the circuit inductors. The main disadvantage of the arresters is that they forcibly break apart when they are overloaded. In this study, an arrester‐less fault current limiter is proposed for HB‐MMC configuration, which provides an opposing voltage during the DC side fault. This is achieved by inserting external pre‐charged capacitors in the DC current path during the fault. The selection of these external capacitors, their suitable initial voltages, and their charging stations are also presented in this study. A comparison between the proposed scheme and the CDSM‐MMC has been held as well. Repetitive high pulsed electric field (PEF) is an effective method to kill microorganisms and bacteria in water treatment applications. The PEF can be generated by applying high-power electromagnetic pulse across the sample to be treated. There are two main types of high-voltage pulse generators, namely, unipolar and bipolar. In this paper, a full-bridge submodule-based modular high-voltage pulse generator, having the ability to generate unipolar and bipolar high-voltage pulses with different shapes from a relatively low-voltage input dc supply, is proposed. In the proposed configuration, relatively low-voltage insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) are required to generate the high-voltage bipolar pulses. A thyristor rated at the level of the pulsed output voltage is required in the proposed configuration to bypass the load during the charging process of capacitors. In the proposed approach, a thyristor is used instead of the self-commutated high-voltage switch (e.g., series-connected IGBTs), as thyristors are available with high-voltage ratings and possess inherent reverse voltage blocking capability. Repetitive Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) is a common technique for disinfecting liquids. By applying adequate PEF across germ cell membranes, an irreversible electroporation process, and cell destruction can be achieved. The PEF can be generated by applying a repetitive pulsed voltage using a high-voltage pulse generator across the cell membrane. Unipolar and bipolar high-voltage pulse generators are commonly used. Bipolar pulse generators can be implemented by employing a unipolar generator with an H-bridge output stage. The main disadvantage of this method is that the switches of the H-bridge are rated at the output high-voltage level, i.e. series-stacked semiconductor devices should be employed with static and dynamic voltage sharing to implement high-voltage switches. In this paper, a half-bridge submodule-based bipolar modular high-voltage pulse-generator fed from a relatively low-voltage dc supply is proposed. In the proposed approach, relatively low-voltage Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) are required to generate the high-voltage bipolar pulses. A detailed illustration of the proposed concept is presented. Simulation results are used to assure the viability of the proposed concept. This paper presents a new configuration for integrated on-board battery chargers of electric vehicles (EVs) incorporating symmetrical six-phase machines. The configuration proposes an exclusive utilization of a nine-switch converter (NSC) along with the machine windings during both propulsion and charging of EVs. The proposed configuration has the advantage of employing a reduced number of components in both the EV (on-board) and charging station (off-board), with the privilege of avoiding machine electromagnetic torque production during charging/vehicle-to-grid (V2G) mode of operation. During charging/V2G mode, the NSC is turned into a conventional three-phase pulse width modulation rectifier and is directly connected to the three-phase mains through the machine windings. Conventional three-phase transformers can be employed for galvanic isolation. Switching between propulsion and charging modes is carried out using a simple hardware reconfiguration. Control schemes for both propulsion and charging/V2G modes are elaborated, along with the principles of operation of the NSC. High-Voltage pulse generators are commonly used in biotechnology, medicine, industrial applications, food processing and drinking water purification. The dc-dc boost converter has been used before in pulsed applications for its ability to amplify a relatively low input dc voltage to a high-voltage output. A high-voltage solid-state chopping switch is then used to chop the generated high output voltage. In this work, a boost-converter based ringing circuit with high voltage gain is proposed for water treatment applications. The basic concept of the proposed approach depends on operating the boost converter under discontinuous current conduction. With the proposed approach, the chopping high-voltage switch at the output stage is eliminated, which positively affects the system cost and efficiency. A full-design of the circuit and passive components is presented to ensure that the desired pulse specifications are achieved. In order to generate bipolar high-voltage (HV) pulses across certain load from HV dc (HVdc) power supply, a voltage source inverter (VSI) stage should be inserted between the load and the supply. In order to meet the required HV level, series connection of semiconductor devices should be employed with dynamic voltage sharing between the involved devices. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) can be used instead of the conventional two-level VSI to alleviate the complexity introduced by the deployment of series-connected devices. The voltage level of the HVdc power supply and the voltage rating of the available semiconductor devices determine the suitable number of MMC voltage levels ( $N$ ). Capacitor voltage balancing is a vital issue for proper operation of the MMC. In general, conventional sensor-based balancing techniques require a significant amount of measurements, which increases the complexity of the system. In addition, the high dv/dt during switching times causes electromagnetic interference, which may adversely affect the accuracy of the measurements. In this paper, a sensorless voltage balancing technique is proposed for the MMC-based bipolar HV pulse generator that reduces the system sensitivity, cost, and complexity. Voltage source converter (VSC)-based high voltage DC (HVDC) transmission is considered the future of offshore power transmission. This paper aims at providing a reliable VSC-HVDC transmission system architecture between offshore wind farms and onshore grids. In this paper, a large-capacity, low-speed flywheel energy storage system (FESS) based on a squirrel cage induction machine is applied in parallel with the VSC-HVDC at the grid side converter. The FESS is dedicated for surge power (due to power flow imbalance during fault) absorption instead of being dissipated in the form of resistive losses. Since the duration of these surges is relatively small, it has been shown that the flywheel can effectively mitigate this problem. In addition to the fault ride-through support during fault conditions, the FESS is employed for power leveling functionality during normal operation. The performance parameters of the proposed approach are investigated via both simulation and experimental results. A 132-kV, 100-MW HVDC system is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink during normal and fault conditions. Converting existing ac transmission lines to an extended multiterminal three-wire bipolar HVDC system can be considered a cost-effective way to interconnect dispersed offshore wind farms to onshore ac grids instead of building new bipolar HVDC systems. To automatically coordinate between different converters in a multiterminal HVDC (MTDC) system, droop control techniques have been adopted as an effective means without the need for fast communications between units. The droop control design is mainly dependent on the line resistances. This paper shows that the equivalent resistance of a three-wire bipolar system changes based on the operational mode. The modification to droop control design of an MTDC equipped with a three-wire bipolar system is then presented to tackle this resistance variation with the operating condition. Two types of MTDC systems are considered in this work, namely, radial parallel and meshed parallel systems. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) have become one of the most promising topologies for high-voltage dc–ac conversion. DC-side fault blocking capability of the MMC has prompted significant research in recent years. In this paper, a new switched capacitor submodule (SCSM) for MMCs is proposed which provides operation with DC fault blocking capability. In addition, successful voltage balancing is achieved with half the number of voltage sensors used with existing MMC cells. Generally, conventional sensor-based balancing techniques require a significant amount of measurements, 2m(N-1) voltage sensors, and 2m current sensors for an N-level m-phase MMC. The proposed cell will thus aid in reducing the complexity of the control system. A detailed illustration of the operational concept of the proposed architecture is presented in this paper. A comparison between the proposed SCSM and other existing MMC cells has been included to highlight the benefits of the proposed SCSM. A simulation model for an MMC-based HVDC system along with the proposed cell has been built to test its performance during normal as well as abnormal operating conditions. The most recent literature on multiphase machine drives is based on voltage-source converter (VSC) systems utilizing different modulation techniques. Very little attention is given to the multiphase current-source converters (CSCs). Applying CSCs in high-power multiphase drive systems is promising and can effectively solve many technical problems associated with conventional VSC-based systems. This paper proposes a space vector pulsewidth-modulation (SVPWM) scheme suitable for a five-phase CSC. Generally, in SVPWM-CSCs, a current path should be provided for the dc-link current by ensuring that one pair of upper and lower switches is always on. Applying this constraint yields 25 different space vectors, which are mapped into two concentric decagons with ten equal sectors in the $\alpha\beta$ and $xy$ sequence planes. Each sector has two active-large vectors, two active-small vectors, and a null vector. Moreover, the active-large vectors in the $\alpha\beta$ plane are active-small vectors in the $xy$ plane, and vice versa. In the proposed scheme, the ampere-second concept is utilized to determine the ratio between the dwelling times of the large and small vectors such that the $xy$ current components are nullified, the utilization of the input dc-current is maximized, and the switching transitions are minimized, which, in turn, minimizes the CSC switching losses. The proposed scheme can effectively provide sinusoidal converter currents, which is suitable for motor drives and energy conversion applications. Pulsed electric field (PEF) can be used effectively in water treatment applications by passing infected water through two electrodes excited from a high voltage pulsed power supply which guarantees killing the harmful germs. In this paper, a new high-voltage pulse-generator with closed loop control of its output voltage is presented for treating water via underwater pulsed streamer corona discharge. The proposed generator is fed from a low AC voltage source (utility mains 220 V, 50 Hz) which makes it suitable for domestic applications. The proposed topology provides transformer-less operation which reduces the system size and enhances the overall efficiency. The proposed topology is based on capacitor-diode voltage multiplier (CDVM) circuits in conjunction with DC-DC converters (Boost and Buck-Boost converters). The four-switch three-phase (FSTP) inverter has been proposed as an innovative inverter design to reduce the cost, complexity, size, and switching losses of the dc–ac conversion system. Traditional FSTP inverter usually operates at half the dc input voltage; hence, the output line voltage cannot exceed this value. This paper proposes a novel design for the FSTP inverter based on the topology of the single-ended primary-inductance converter (SEPIC). The proposed topology provides pure sinusoidal output voltages with no need for output filter. Compared to traditional FSTP inverter, the proposed FSTP SEPIC inverter improves the voltage utilization factor of the input dc supply, where the proposed topology provides higher output line voltage which can be extended up to the full value of the dc input voltage. The integral sliding-mode control is used with the proposed topology to optimize its dynamics and to ensure robustness of the system during different operating conditions. Derivation of the equations describing the parameters design, components ratings, and the operation of the proposed SEPIC inverter is presented in this paper. This paper proposes a switched photovoltaic (PV) approach to enhance the extracted maximum power from a PV array during partial shading conditions. The proposed system is simple and cost effective. However, it may provide lower power enhancement compared to other existing solutions, which makes it more suitable for domestic applications. For assessing the proposed switched PV-based system, a detailed numerical comparison between the extracted power from the proposed system and other existing technologies has been presented for the same operating conditions. One of the main challenges in designing high-power drive systems is the quality of the developed torque. High-torque-ripple magnitudes result in serious vibration and acoustic noise problems that affect the lifetime of a drive train. Multiphase machines intrinsically offer the torque with higher quality and are also being promoted for their high fault tolerant capability when compared with their three-phase counterparts. During open-phase conditions, the induced nonfundamental sequence current components have a detrimental effect on the machine performance especially under open-loop control. Although optimal current control is usually employed to ensure certain optimization criterion, such as minimizing torque ripples, optimizing flux distribution, or minimizing copper loss, are met, it usually entails a sophisticated current controller. This paper studies the effect of a stator winding connection of a five-phase induction machine on the induced torque ripples. Two possible connections, namely, star and pentagon connections are compared under healthy as well as fault conditions with one-line open. The comparison is conducted using both finite-element simulation and experimental results using a 1.5-Hp five-phase prototype induction machine. This study proposes a new architecture of flywheel energy storage system (FESS) which can be implemented at generating unit (GU) level (e.g. wind turbine) or scaled up for application in grid‐side converter (GSC) stations of a multi‐terminal direct current (MTDC) system. The proposed architecture suppresses DC voltage leaps under grid faults, and performs power levelling duty at grid connection points. When implemented at GU level, the proposed FESS features a doubly‐fed induction machine (DFIM) – the flywheel machine – where its six stator winding terminals are connected in series between the grid and the GSC. The flywheel converter is of partial power rating, and is connected to the DFIM rotor. When employed at an MTDC GSC station, several submodules are connected to build an FESS station. The study proposes the control concept and the general topology of the FESS station. The performance parameters of the system are tested under normal and abnormal operating conditions. Two-level voltage-source converters and half-bridge modular multilevel converters are among the most popular types of HVDC converters. One of their serious drawbacks is their vulnerable nature to dc-side faults, since the freewheeling diodes act as a rectifier bridge and feed the dc faults. The severity of dc-side faults can be limited by connecting double thyristor switches across the semiconductor devices. By turning them on, the ac current contribution into the dc side is eliminated and the dc-link current will freely decay to zero. The main disadvantages of this method are: high dv/dt stresses across thyristors during normal conditions, and the absence of bypassing for the freewheeling diodes during dc faults since they are sharing the fault current with thyristors. This paper proposes combining and connecting the double thyristor switches across the ac output terminals of the HVDC converter. The proposed protection scheme provides advantages, such as lower dv/dt stresses and lower voltage rating of thyristor switches in addition to providing full segregation between the converter semiconductor devices and ac grid during dc-side faults.
