Abstract: The overall damping of linear arch dam-water-foundation rock systems depends on the material damping of dam concrete, the material and radiation damping of semi-unbounded foundation rock, and the dam-water interaction. In this paper, the effective damping ratio of these factors is separately evaluated for Mauvoisin arch dam in Switzerland to quantitatively discuss their contributions, and to guide the damping selection in the numerical analysis. This paper also aims to investigate if the material and radiation damping of the foundation rock can be replaced by increasing the material damping of the dam to simplify numerical analysis models. The seismic responses of Mauvoisin arch dam are analyzed using the semi-unbounded and massless foundation models, respectively. The results show that the overall effective damping ratio of the system can be approximately expressed as the summation of the individual effective damping and thus the increased material damping of the dam can approximate the material and radiation damping of the semi-unbounded foundation rock. The primary objective of the present paper is to apply Artificial Neural Network in the form of Radial Basis Function network to predict the mean monthly total ozone concentration over Arosa, Switzerland (46.8° N/9.68° E). The satellite observations of the total ozone content are based on the total ozone observations performed by the ground-based instrumentation. While analysing the dataset it was found that January, February and March are the months of maximum variability in the mean monthly total ozone over the stated region. Then, these three months were considered as the target months to frame the predictive model. After appropriate training and testing, it was found that Radial Basis Function network is a suitable neural net type for predicting the aforesaid time series. Moreover, this kind of neural net was found most adroit in predicting the mean monthly total ozone in the month of January. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: High resistivity and high oxygen concentration of silicon wafers can be beneficial for the radiation hardness of silicon detectors. Wafers of Magnetic Czochralski silicon (MCz-Si) can be grown with a resistivity of a few and with well-controlled, high oxygen concentration. According to the beam test results presented in this paper, n-type MCz-Si bulk, p-strip readout detectors with can be operated with acceptable signal-to-noise ratio up to the irradiation fluence of 1×1015 cm−2 1-MeV neutron equivalent. The improved radiation hardness compared to that of traditional p-in-n Float Zone silicon (p-in-n FZ-Si) detectors can be explained by better electric field distribution inside MCz-Si detectors. The difference between the distributions is clearly shown by Transient Current Technique (TCT) measurements, presented in this paper. Thus, strip detectors made on n-type MCz-Si are a feasible option for the outer tracker layers of the potential upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the Super-LHC. We consider the λSUSY model, a version of the NMSSM with large λH1H2S coupling, relaxing the approximation of large singlet mass and negligible mixing of the scalar singlet with the scalar doublets. We show that there are regions of the parameter space in which the lightest pseudoscalar can be relatively light, with unusual consequences on the decay pattern of the CP-even Higgs bosons and thus on the LHC phenomenology. The article focuses on mathematician Alice Roth and provides information regarding her education and her works. Roth, now well known for her work in rational approximation theory, was the first woman to win the Silver Medal at the institute and the second woman to obtain a Ph.D. in mathematics in Switzerland. Though Roth published her thesis in 1938, it would be many years before her work was rediscovered and appreciated. The life and work of this woman who, in all areas of her life, was always too early to benefit from her talent, determination, and strong will, is discussed in the article.
