The article presents information about the"Journal of Marriage and the Family." The journal received 212 manuscripts during the previous year for review. The fact that both government agencies and foundations have withdrawn support for family related research makes this development remarkable. The increase in the volume of research paper received by the journal has augmented the standard of papers published in it.

The purpose of the article is to afford an additional medium of expression for scholars in the field of Rural Sociology. Rural Sociology has always been the joint responsibility of the professional organization of rural sociologists and a sponsoring university. Its history is intimately intertwined with the history of the Rural Sociological Society and its predecessor, the Rural Sociology Section of the American Sociological Society. The history of the journal may be summarized in four periods: (1) the prepublication period when decisions and plans were made; (2) the first five years (1936-40), at Louisiana State University; (3) the next eleven years (1941-51), under the sponsorship of North Carolina State College; and (4) the years at the University of Kentucky (1952-57), four of which fall in the 20-year period covered by this index. Moreover, it will be the policy to solicit manuscripts from workers in foreign countries, although it is intended that all such papers shall deal with some phase of rural social life.

The editorial comments on the "Journal of Marriage & the Family." The number of manuscripts received for this year's publication is 28 per cent higher than last year's number. The ratio for acceptance to rejection has been one to four, but will be increased to a ratio of one to five due to the backlog of accepted papers. Data shows the number of manuscripts in process for the three months of October in 1972-1974. The editor states that the journal has become more efficient in processing and making decisions about manuscripts.

This article reports on editor and managing editor of the journal "Rural Sociology," and the special journal committee. The financial report of "Rural Sociology," shows actual receipts and expenditures as of July 31, 1961, together with estimates for the last half of the year. The financial position of the journal continues to he favorable. As shown by the financial statement, the estimated balance is slightly above that of 1960. In the past year, the size of the press run as well as of individual issues has increased. As of September 1, 1961, sufficient manuscript has been accepted for approximately three avenge-sized issues. As pointed out in last year's report, the flow of manuscripts to "Rural Sociology," is increasing. The total number of papers submitted in 1958, 1959, and 1960 numbered 46, 51, and 60, respectively. In the first six months of 1961, 48 manuscripts had been submitted. The committee was unanimous in the advisability of exploring the possibilities of publishing "Rural Sociology," through the American Sociological Association. A preliminary contact was made prior to the annual meeting at Ames. Simultaneously, the committee solicited interest on the part of Departments of Rural Sociology in assuming the management of the journal. Interest was indicated by two universities.

The article discusses the history of bookkeeping with particular focus on manuscripts written during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. A sixteenth century manuscript on bookkeeping was found in the Germanisches Museum in Nuremberg, Germany by Balduin Penndorf. Particular focus in the article is given to the manuscripts of Matthäus Schwarz and Johann NeudÖrffer and their background in bookkeeping. It is thought that books giving instruction in bookkeeping originated around 1494 when "Summa" was written by Luca Pacioli.

With the growing use of statistical analysis there seems to be an increase in the attention paid to the form of presentation. In large numbers of manuscripts, statistical considerations appear to have been subordinated to the aesthetic felling that percentages are not balanced figures unless they are given to one, or even two, decimal places. The degree of accuracy indicated by such a procedure may be gratifying, provided it is accuracy which is indicated. In studies which involve sampling, it is customary to describe statistical measures in terms of their standard errors. Unless one intends to make comparisons of differences of less than one percent, the apparent accuracy gained by utilizing the last digit is illusory, and a waste of time and paper. Statistical analysis is a well-tempered tool which can be used only within the limitations permitted by the data. To disregard these limitations, makes statistical analysis a less useful tool and may reflect discredit upon it as well as the user.

The article discusses the book "Essays by Karl Marx, Selected from the Economic-Philosophical Manuscripts," translated by Ria Stone. This work makes available for the first time in English translation three essays by Karl Marx which deal with basic positions in his system. They are his papers on alienated labor, private property and communism and a critique of the Hegelian dialectic.

In his work, sociologist Karl Marx appears as a thorough going humanist and it is from this point onwards that a whole Marx industry developed. Sociologist David McLellan's intention is to convince his readers that any interpretation of Marx which does not take his work "Grundrisse der Kritik der politischen Ökonomie," seriously into account must by virtue of omission be radically mistaken. The work given by McLellan is not Marx's Grundrisse but McLelIan's Grundrisse. There is no proper explanation presented by McLellan of why from one thousand pages, a selection of one hundred and fifty two was done. The last chapter of "Marx Before Marxism," and the introduction to the Grundrisse are taken up with the crucial but rather easy task of textually refuting the break in Marx thesis. In the preface to his extremely useful selection from the early texts McLellan indicates the importance of the manuscripts and other works. McLellan's presentation of Marx is cautious, erudite and clever, but he rarely commits himself completely. McLellan demonstrates "Capital," which is only the elaboration of the first of the six sections outlined in the Grundrisse. In a sense, none of Marx's works is complete, but the completest of them is the Grundrisse.

The article presents information related to the journal "American Journal of Economics & Sociology." The dearth of acceptable manuscripts which other editors mention in their reports has not struck the Journal yet. Indeed, the Journal has proved inadequate for the minimum amount of material it must print in order to report upon the more important studies that are being pursued by the Journal's collaborators in the interest of co-operation among the various social sciences and related disciplines for the construction of a rational social and economic organization. Partly, of course, this happy situation occurs because the times have presented challenging problems to the Journal's collaborators, problems best suited to their approach. Equally important as an explanation is the method by which the Journal's editors and advisers collaborate with the associated scholars. Most of the studies of the Journal are nurtured from conception and formulation through investigation and the stage of report by at least one and usually several of the members of the Journal's board.
