The article presents a response of the author on comments made by sociologists N.J. Demerath and A.W. Eister on the church-sect dimension. I am provoked much more to agreement than to debate. There are, nonetheless, points which call for clarification and further conceptualization. We will begin with Eister's sweeping statements since his critique and my own are more complementary than contradictory. It is wrong, however, to infer that I am attempting to salvage the church-sect typology, to criticize only a part of it and to replace that part with an improved part, so that the basic edifice of church-sect will be retained. I must assert that the basic intention of my paper was to show how and why the church-sect dimension was faulty and to show this empirically. In order to offer an adequate critique of any theoretical tool, it has to be taken apart piece by piece, if nearly all the pieces are faulty as I would assert is true of church-sect then we are left with an unusable tool, one which must be either entirely remade, or discarded altogether. Eister suggests that this is too trivial and partial, that the tool ought to be smashed without reference to its component parts.

The article examines a debate on how much of the high level of unemployment is due to a deficiency of aggregate demand and how much is the result of structural changes which make a growing fraction of the labor force unsuited for the jobs that are available. The relative unemployment rate in 1962 for both boys and girls was lower than in 1958 or 1956. However, the proportion of the labor force accounted for by girls has been rising relatively more rapidly than for boys, with the result that girls in 1962 accounted for a somewhat larger fraction of unemployment than in 1959 or 1958. The lessened importance of first-job seekers in the late forties seems to be connected with a sharp decline in the contribution of the male 20-24 age group to total unemployment.

This article reviews some of the competing theses in the argument about the content of and degree of heterogeneity in British West Indian culture, and then relates their various hypotheses to some empirical findings on attitudes in Trinidad and Tobago. The focus is on four sociological interpretations of West Indian culture, the thesis of cultural pluralism, the thesis of cultural consensus, the argument about cultural variation and the thesis of increasing modernism. The basis of cultural pluralism is the view of culture as a system of major institutions. The basis of the cultural homogeneity is the structural functionalist theory. The intra cultural variation is repeating across the society, giving both variation and integration to the culture. Discussion on the thesis of cultural consensus, cultural pluralism, value variation and increasing modernism is presented. As a thesis about the organization of West Indian culture, cultural modernism meshes even better with the Trinidadian data than does the thesis of cultural variation. Only on the man-nature orientation do the trends in the Trinidadian groups approximate those in the thesis of cultural modernism.

The article gives a description of how the journal has played an active role in creating awareness among people while debating on issue of drug abuse and alcoholism. The subject of drug abuse was debated at length last month at the Annual Representative Meeting of the British Medical Association; in particular, the problems caused by abuse of amphetamines and barbiturates. The journal seeks cooperation from members of the Society to actively join hands with the journal to fight for a common cause.

This article focuses on the world's first center for mechanized indexing and analyzing of great works of literature that was opened on December 17, 1956, in Gallarate, near Milan. This center will be able to place information hitherto difficult to obtain at the instant disposal of researchers. What researchers have done is to take advantage of the technology of their time and make it serve the scholar. Imagine preparing an index of all parliamentary debates for the last 50 years and noting how often the word "democracy" appears in them and in what context. The Center will supply scholars with any information from its central indices they may need.
