The article presents information about the journal "American Sociological Review." The Editorial Board, at its meeting in Philadelphia, December 27, 1939, decided that any member of the Society who is engaged in scholarly work may quote any material published in the Review, up to 500 words, without asking permission of the editor, provided that the user is not trying to make personal profit out of the author's or publisher's property, or to pass off as his own, work which is really that of another. Since all material in the Review is copyrighted, it is the property of the Society and its agent. The Editorial Board has the legal right to grant or withhold such permission. All members should encourage students to take advantage of the student subscription rate of $2.50. Letters from persons who are not actually members of the Society will not be printed. A number of matters were discussed at the Editorial Board meeting held in Philadelphia. For the benefit of the newer members of the Society, and as a reminder to others, it is perhaps advisable to make a statement regarding publication procedure and policy.

This article presents a list of several articles published in different periodicals in the field of economics. The list comprises catagorised sections of articles on different fields of economics, such as, economic theories and concepts, economic history and developments, industrial economics, statistics and econometrics, and so on. It comprises the article "Some elementary theory about accumulation," by D.B. Butt, published in the September 1955 issue of the journal "Oxford Economic Papers." The article "Some aspects of the writing of Pareto and Veblen," by I.Z. Bhatty, published in the September 1954 issue of the "Indian Journal of Economics." Another article "Statistical inference in dynamic economic models," by M.R. Fisher, published in the December 1954 issue of the "Economic Journal."

The article introduces the March 1973 issue of the journal ACM Computing Surveys. The journal received various contributions from outstanding authors mostly computer professionals. The journal helped computer people to catch up on the latest ideas concepts and advances in the field. The effect of this change has created new opportunities and challenges for the authors of survey. An increasing number of readers are capable of benefiting from tutorial and survey papers presented at advanced levels. The author provides the characteristics of a paper acceptable by the magazine. A good tutorial paper covering an area of the computer field that has recently become important and better understood will get top priority. The body of the paper should be interesting. The text of the survey can be brief, letting the bibliography that attends it and the index into it be as long and up-to-date as required. An excellent survey article is likely to be given preference over a tutorial that is rated only good.

This article presents a list of titles of several books on economics which includes titles of several French, Spanish and Dutch publications which have been supplied respectively by Jean-Marcel Jeanneney of the Fondadon Nationale des Sciences Politiques, Paris; Victor L. Tirquidi, director of El Trimestre Económico, Mexico; D.F. Verdoon and P.J. Verdoorn, of the Centraal Planbureau, Hague, The Netherlands; correspondents of the journal "The American Economic Review." Some of the books are: "Henry George," by C.A. Baker; "Public Policy—A Yearbook of the Graduate School of Public Administration, Harward University," edited by C.J. Fredrich and J.K. Galbraith; and "The Theory of Interest—As Determined By Impatience To Spend Income and Opportunity To Invest It," by I. Fisher.

The basic requirement of every academic editor is that each article be a scholarly contribution to knowledge of the field. Contributions in an academic journal may be made by recognizing new problems of the field and suggesting possible solutions. Opportunities for contributions comes when new techniques are devised or become available for the solution of old problems, or when some new programs or new thoughts not always forthcoming as promptly to avoid a new problem. Another type of scholarly contribution may be made in the form of historical analyses. Another dubious candidate for scholarly effort is the voluminous compendium of what others have said on a subject with no adequate or new criticism or evaluation. Manuscripts submitted by authors usually go to the printer in the case of an academic journal, so it should be clear and readable to the editor also. Editor's do have obligations, therefore, a broad view of the possible forms of scholarly contribution is also needed by the editor of a scholarly journal, certainly if the journal is designed for a fairly large and diversified audience.

The article guides on the type of reviews of the literature articles required for the publication in the November 1973 journal "Personnel and Guidance Journal." Sometimes called a state-of-the-art paper, this type of article asks: "What does the published material in a certain area tell us?" But for P&G purposes the question must include one additional clause: "What does the published material tell us regarding the implications for practitioners?" These articles should begin with the kinds of questions that practitioners in various settings would ask. The review should then be organized in such a way as to bring forth whatever answers-or lack of answers-were found by its writer. It requires know-how about both research and practice, and it requires the ability to bridge the gap between the two. Potentially it is the most important contribution that can be made to practitioners in a research based field.

Dorsey; "Conceptions of Man and the Helping Professions," by C. Harold McCully; "The Place of Counseling in the Preparation of Student Personnel Workers," by Clyde A. Parker and "Adapting a College-Level Occupations Course to Meet Expressed Student Needs," by Malcolm D. Salinger.

The article focuses on the potential impact of the National Defense Education Act on the field of evaluation and measurement. Thousands upon thousands of students have been measured, as a result of this program, in abilities in which they would not otherwise have been measured. Hundreds of school systems have elaborated their testing and guidance procedures in ways which they would not otherwise have seen as possible. Publishers and authors of tests can accept the increments in profits and royalties as simply the proper reward of the ingenuity, skill, artistry, and effort that went into the creation of the instruments, with no feeling of further obligation. It might be suggested that enlightened self-interest would indicate a different viewpoint. Even though a test, or a set of tests, has been widely adopted for use in testing programs, it is likely to be susceptible to improvement. There are opportunities for expanding the sizes of normative samples, of obtaining more representative norms, of developing meaningful local norms.

The article presents results of a study of teaching aids included in secondary-school biology textbooks in the U.S. It may be concluded that the textbook authors and publishers have multiplied the types and numbers of teaching aids incorporated in biology textbooks until they have passed the point of diminishing returns. It is noted that some teaching aids in textbooks should either be made more updated or should be made to apply more specifically to actual teaching situations and particular types of environment. Failing these possibilities, it seems clear that the teaching aids in question might well be omitted from future biology textbooks.

The article presents information on an advisory opinion issued by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in regards to Witkower Press Inc. Witkower is a publisher of the book "Arthritis and Common Sense," which the FTC contends advertises the author's theories on arthritis as an effective treatment on the book jacket. The FTC also claims that the book jacket misrepresents the credentials and honorary degrees earned by the author since he made contributions to universities in order to obtain the degrees. The author finds it particularly interesting that the book jacket was considered by the FTC to be an advertisement.

The article focuses on the publishing industries, publications, and authors in the state of North Carolina. Twice within the past two months, H.L. Mencken, editor of "The American Mercury" and contributor to the Baltimore "Evening Sun," has proclaimed "The Journal of Social Forces," a University of North Carolina Press publication now beginning its third volume, the most significant periodical the South has ever seen. From the North Carolina Historical Commission has come volume one of "The North Carolina Historical Review," and during the most recent tour of the Carolina Playmakers a second series of "Folk Plays" written by the Playmakers has come from the press of Henry Holt and Company. Some time during the summer an attractively printed volume of prize short stories and poems came from the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs, the Wachovia Historical Society issued an important historical publication, and throughout the year generally articles and an occasional book by North Carolina authors appeared in the national magazines and in the lists of national book publishers.
