The paper describes an electrical analogue for aiding the solution of the classical transportation problem. It is based on the Simplex method of solution due to Dantzig. Two simple basic circuits, a feasibility circuit and a cost comparison circuit, are provided for each source and destination pair. Switching enables the feasible routes to be selected and then explored for comparative costs. The procedure is iterative. A detailed analytical study of the transient behaviour of a bistable tunnel diode circuit, has been made using an accurate empirical curve fitting expression for tunnel diode characteristics. The forward and reverse characteristics of a practical bistable trigger to a step input excitation have been predicted in terms of device parameters and operating conditions. The effect of a small inductance on switching time has also been investigated and it is found that it helps in speeding up the switching process. The conditions of effective switching have also been obtained from analytical considerations and the influence, of overdrive has been reported. The analysis shows that the switching time depends on the average resistance of various segments and no special contribution of negative resistance is found so far as switching time is concerned. The proposed analytical procedure is found to be very suitable for the ready evaluation of the transient characteristics of a tunnel diode under different circuit conditions as it involves only a curve fitting and a few known device parameters.
In conclusion it may be mentioned that the procedure outlined in this is paper for the switching time calculation of the tunnel diode circuit is quite general, straight-forward and involves a few known parameters of the tunnel diode and a curve fitting parameter . The analysis shows that the switching time depends on the average resistances of various segments and is independent of the detailed nature of the resistance. No special contribution of the negative resistance is found to affect the switching time and its role is to ensure two bistable conditions only. This fact is not revealed when the tunnel diode characteristic is divided into linear segments or an exact computer solution is given. When an N-path type filter uses switched filters which are high-pass sections, it is shown that the output characteristic can have either a deep or a shallow notch at the switching frequency. Also, using certain switching arrangements, the output characteristic of the filter can be changed from a high-pass to a low-pass characteristic by resampling the output at different positions.
