This study addresses a crucial gap in understanding the impact of urban morphologies on the canopy urban heat islands (CUHI) effect. The selection of reference stations lacks a unified standard, and their surface air temperature (SAT) sequences are also inevitably influenced by urbanization. However, synchronous observational data from relocated meteorological stations could provide high-quality sample data for studying CUHI. Utilizing remote sensing techniques, the findings of this paper revealed that the observation environment of stations after relocation exhibited remarkable representativeness, with their observation sequences accurately reflecting the local climatic background. The differences in synchronized observation sequences could characterize the CUHI intensity (CUHII). Among the various factors, land use parameters and landscape parameters played particularly significant roles. Furthermore, the fitting performance of the random forest (RF) model for both training and testing data was significantly superior to that of the linear model and support vector regression (SVR) model. Additionally, the influence of local circulation on CUHI could not be overlooked. Physical and climatic variables such as Tree Canopy coverage, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Distance to Roads, Distance to the Coast, Impervious Surface, and Precipitation can affect land surface temperature (LST). This paper examines the relationships using linear regression models and explores LST trends in the Miami Statistical Area (MSA) between 2002 and 2021. This study evaluates the effect of dry and wet seasons as well as day and night data on LST. A multiscale investigation is used to examine LST trends at the MSA scale, the individual county level, and at the pixel level to provide a detailed local perspective. The multiscale results are needed to understand spatiotemporal LST distributions to plan mitigation measures such as planting trees or greenery to regulate temperature and reduce the impacts of surface urban heat islands. The results indicate that LST values are rising in the MSA with a positive trend throughout the 20-year study period. The rate of change (RoC) for the wet season is smaller than for the dry season. The pixel-level analysis suggests that the RoC is primarily in rural areas and less apparent in urban areas. New development in rural areas may trigger increased RoC. This RoC relates to LST in the MSA and is different from global or regional RoC using air temperature. Results also suggest that climatic explanatory variables have different impacts during the night than they do in the daytime. For instance, the Tree Canopy variable has a positive coefficient, while during the day, the Tree Canopy variable has a negative relationship with LST. The Distance to the Coast variable changes from day to night as well. This article addresses the simulation of urban air temperatures with a focus on evaluating the Urban Weather Generator (UWG) model over Toulouse, France. As urban temperatures, influenced by factors like urbanization, anthropogenic heat release, and complex urban geometry, exhibit an urban heat island (UHI) effect, understanding and mitigating UHI become crucial. With increasing global warming and urban populations, aiding urban planners necessitates accurate simulations requiring data at the canyon level. The paper evaluates UWG's performance in simulating air temperatures under realistic conditions, emphasizing an operational context and a non-specialist user's perspective. The evaluation includes selecting the most suitable meteorological station, assessing the impact of the rural station choice, and conducting a sensitivity analysis of input parameters. The validation demonstrates good agreement, with a mean bias error (MBE) of 0.02 °C and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.73 °C. However, we highlight the fact that UWG performs better in a densely urbanized area, and exhibits limitations in sensitivity to urban surface parameter variations, particularly in less urbanized areas. Urban heat island (UHI) mitigation and adaptation are urgent needs in a built environment, which requires us to search for sustainable solutions to limit the urban heat island effect and improve the energy efficiency of building envelopes. Among these solutions, vertical green structures (VGSs) have recently attracted significant attention for their potential to mitigate adverse effects, especially in densely built areas. This study presents a comprehensive data analysis of the microclimate of a living wall in Milan, Italy. Our aim was to evaluate this VGS's performance in mitigating temperature increases caused by the UHI effect. In the literature, similar studies are limited to shorter monitoring periods (mostly in cooling seasons) and specific orientations (mostly facing south). However, the VGS presented in this case study here faces northwest and was continuously monitored for one calendar year. During this continuous in situ monitoring campaign, air temperature data from sensors either embedded in vegetation or exposed on a bare wall were collected and analysed over a whole calendar year, which is a novelty compared to the existing literature focused on VGSs due to the long duration. The findings indicate that the studied VGS has the ability to influence the outdoor microclimate depending on the season, the precipitation events, the wall exposure, the type of vegetation, and the vegetation's phenological attributes. The analysis showed that the VGS consistently maintained cooler temperatures than the bare wall, with mean temperature differences ranging from 2.8 °C in autumn to 0.8 °C in spring through the winter. The vegetation acted as a natural insulator by reducing the air temperature during the hot summer and in early autumn, corresponding to the growing period of the vegetation. Thus, VGSs show potential to mitigate the global warming effect. These findings provide valuable insights on vegetation's capability to act as a thermal regulator for sustainable urban planning and energy-efficient building design and retrofitting. In the past century, local-scale warming caused by a strengthening urban heat island effect has brought inevitable systematic bias to observational data from surface weather stations located in or near urban areas. In this study, the land use situation around U.S. Climate Reference Network (USCRN) stations was used as a reference for rural station selection; stations with similar environmental conditions in the U.S. Historical Climatology Network (USHCN) were selected as reference stations using a machine learning method, and then the maximum surface air temperature (Tmax) series, minimum surface air temperature (Tmin) series and mean surface air temperature (Tmean) series of rural stations during 1921–2020 were compared with those for all nearby stations (including both rural and urban stations) to evaluate urbanization effects in the USHCN observation data series of the contiguous United States, which can be regarded as urbanization bias contained in the latest homogenized USHCN observation data. The results showed that the urbanization effect on the Tmean trend of USHCN stations is 0.002 °C dec−1, and the urbanization contribution is 35%, indicating that urbanization around USHCN stations has led to at least one-third of the overall warming recorded at USHCN stations over the last one hundred years. The urbanization effects on Tmax and Tmin trends of USHCN stations are −0.015 °C dec−1 and 0.013 °C dec−1, respectively, and the urbanization contribution for Tmin is 34%. These results have significance for understanding the systematic bias in USHCN temperature data, and they provide a reference for subsequent studies on data correction and climate change monitoring.
