The fire heat release rate (HRR) is a crucial parameter for describing the combustion process and its thermal effects. In recent years, some studies have employed fire scene images and deep learning algorithms to predict real-time fire HRR, which has led to the advancement of HRR prediction in terms of both lightweightness and real-time monitoring. Nevertheless, the development of an early-stage monitoring system for fires and the ability to predict future HRR based on current moment data represents a crucial foundation for evaluating the scale of indoor fires and enhancing the capacity to prevent and control such incidents. This paper proposes a deep learning model based on continuous fire scene images (containing both flame and smoke features) and their time-series information to predict the future transient fire HRR. The model (Att-BiLSTM) comprises three bi-directional long- and short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) layers and one attention layer. The model employs a bidirectional feature extraction approach, followed by the introduction of an attention mechanism to highlight the image features that have a critical impact on the prediction results. In this paper, a large-scale dataset is constructed by collecting 27,231 fire scene images with instantaneous HRR annotations from 40 different fire trials from the NIST database. The experimental results demonstrate that Att-BiLSTM is capable of effectively utilizing fire scene image features and temporal information to accurately predict future transient HRR, including those in high-brightness fire environments and complex fire source situations. Vacuum is an important parameter in cutter suction dredging operations because the equipment is underwater and can easily fail. It is necessary to analyze other parameters related to the vacuum to make real-time predictions about it, which can improve the construction efficiency of the dredger under abnormal working conditions. In this paper, a data-driven method for predicting the vacuum of the underwater pump of the cutter suction dredger (CSD) is proposed with the help of big data, machine learning, data mining, and other technologies, and based on the historical data of "Hua An Long" CSD. The method eliminates anomalous data, standardizes the data set, and then relies on theory and engineering experience to achieve feature extraction using the Spearman correlation coefficient. Then, six machine learning methods were employed in this study to train and predict the data set, namely, lasso regression (lasso), elastic network (Enet), gradient boosting decision tree (including traditional GBDT, extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM)), and stacking. The comparison of the indicators obtained through multiple rounds of feature number iteration shows that the LightGBM model has high prediction accuracy, a good running time, and a generalization ability. This paper presents a collaborative filtering algorithm based on reinforcement learning theory. Then, the personalized bank financial recommendation system for users is constructed in the massive data environment. Tags mimic different types of user interest points to build a representative personalized data set. The collaborative screening of bank financial products is realized using the simulation results and users' historical access records. The ranking calculation of related financial products is added to the general bank financial product recommendation system. This method can more accurately express the query results for a specific user. It is found that the collaborative filtering algorithm based on enhanced learning theory can improve the efficiency of collaborative screening of bank financial products. The best results can be obtained by combining the two organically. In the operation of medium-voltage distribution cables, the local insulation performance may degrade due to inherent defects, environmental influences, and external forces, leading to consecutive self-recovering latent faults in the cables. If not addressed promptly, these faults may escalate into permanent failures. To address this issue, this paper analyzes the development mechanism and characteristics of latent cable faults. A 10kV low-resistance cable latent fault model based on the Kizilcay arc model is built in the PSCAD/EMTDC platform. Furthermore, the paper analyzes and extracts the time-domain, frequency-domain, and time-frequency domain features of fault current samples. Effective fault feature vectors are constructed using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Based on the fault feature vectors and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), an intelligent fault identification model for cable latent faults is developed. The initial parameters of the ELM model are optimized using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. With the exponential growth of data, extracting actionable insights becomes resource-intensive. In many organizations, normalized relational databases store a significant portion of this data, where tables are interconnected through some relations. This paper explores relational learning, which involves joining and merging database tables, often normalized in the third normal form. The subsequent processing includes extracting features and utilizing them in machine learning (ML) models. In this paper, we experiment with the propositionalization algorithm (i.e., Wordification) for feature engineering. Next, we compare the algorithms PropDRM and PropStar, which are designed explicitly for multi-relational data mining, to traditional machine learning algorithms. Based on the performed experiments, we concluded that Gradient Boost, compared to PropDRM, achieves similar performance (F1 score, accuracy, and AUC) on multiple datasets. PropStar consistently underperformed on some datasets while being comparable to the other algorithms on others. In summary, the propositionalization algorithm for feature extraction makes it feasible to apply traditional ML algorithms for relational learning directly. In contrast, approaches tailored specifically for relational learning still face challenges in scalability, interpretability, and efficiency. These findings have a practical impact that can help speed up the adoption of machine learning in business contexts where data is stored in relational format without requiring domain-specific feature extraction. Defect pattern analysis of wafer bin maps (WBMs) is an important means of identifying process problems. Recently, automated analysis methods using machine learning or deep learning have been studied as alternatives to manual classification by engineers. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the feature extraction performance of defect patterns by transforming the polar coordinate system instead of the existing WBM image input. To reduce the variability of the location representation, defect patterns in the Cartesian coordinate system, where the location of the distributed defect die is not constant, were converted to a polar coordinate system. The CNN classifier, which uses polar coordinate transformed input, achieved a classification accuracy of 91.3%, which is 4.8% better than the existing WBM image-based CNN classifier. Additionally, a tree-structured classifier model that sequentially connects binary classifiers achieved a classification accuracy of 94%. The method proposed in this paper is also applicable to the defect pattern classification of WBMs consisting of different die sizes than the training data. Finally, the paper proposes an automated pattern classification method that uses individual classifiers to learn defect types and then applies ensemble techniques for multiple defect pattern classification. Background: Emotion is a complex phenomenon that greatly affects human behavior and thinking in daily life. Electroencephalography (EEG), one of the human physiological signals, has been emphasized by most researchers in emotion recognition as its specific properties are closely associated with human emotion. However, the number of human emotion recognition studies using computer games as stimuli is still insufficient as there were no relevant publicly available datasets provided in the past decades. Most of the recent studies using the Gameemo public dataset have not clarified the relationship between the EEG signal's changes and the emotion elicited using computer games. Thus, this paper is proposed to introduce the use of data mining techniques in investigating the relationships between the frequency changes of EEG signals and the human emotion elicited when playing different kinds of computer games. The data acquisition stage, data pre-processing, data annotation and feature extraction stage were designed and conducted in this paper to obtain and extract the EEG features from the Gameemo dataset. The cross-subject and subject-based experiments were conducted to evaluate the classifiers' performance. The top 10 association rules generated by the RCAR classifier will be examined to determine the possible relationship between the EEG signal's frequency changes and game-induced emotions. Results: The RCAR classifier constructed for cross-subject experiment achieved highest accuracy, precision, recall and F1-score evaluated with over 90% in classifying the HAPV, HANV and LANV game-induced emotions. The 20 experiment cases' results from subject-based experiments supported that the SVM classifier could accurately classify the 4 emotion states with a kappa value over 0.62, demonstrating the SVM-based algorithm's capabilities in precisely determining the emotion label for each participant's EEG features' instance. Conclusion: The findings in this study fill the existing gap of game-induced emotion recognition field by providing an in-depth evaluation on the ruleset algorithm's performance and feasibility of applying the generated rules on the game-induced EEG data for justifying the emotional state prediction result. Accurately predicting the price of carbon is an effective way of ensuring the stability of the carbon trading market and reducing carbon emissions. Aiming at the non-smooth and non-linear characteristics of carbon price, this paper proposes a novel hybrid prediction model based on improved feature extraction and non-linear integration, which is built on complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN), fuzzy entropy (FuzzyEn), improved random forest using particle swarm optimisation (PSORF), extreme learning machine (ELM), long short-term memory (LSTM), non-linear integration based on multiple linear regression (MLR) and random forest (MLRRF), and error correction with the autoregressive integrated moving average model (ARIMA), named CEEMDAN-FuzzyEn-PSORF-ELM-LSTM-MLRRF-ARIMA. Firstly, CEEMDAN is combined with FuzzyEn in the feature selection process to improve extraction efficiency and reliability. Secondly, at the critical prediction stage, PSORF, ELM, and LSTM are selected to predict high, medium, and low complexity sequences, respectively. Thirdly, the reconstructed sequences are assembled by applying MLRRF, which can effectively improve the prediction accuracy and generalisation ability. Finally, error correction is conducted using ARIMA to obtain the final forecasting results, and the Diebold–Mariano test (DM test) is introduced for a comprehensive evaluation of the models. With respect to carbon prices in the pilot regions of Shenzhen and Hubei, the results indicate that the proposed model has higher prediction accuracy and robustness. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a popular neurological disorder affecting a critical part of the world's population. Its early diagnosis is extremely imperative for enhancing the quality of patients' lives. This review describes the contribution of image processing, feature extraction, optimization, and classification approach in AD recognition. It deeply investigates different methods adopted for multiclass diagnosis of AD. To address the cost and efficiency issues of manually analysing requirement dependency in requirements engineering, a requirement dependency extraction method based on part-of-speech features and an improved stacking ensemble learning model (P-Stacking) is proposed. Firstly, to overcome the problem of singularity in the feature extraction process, this paper integrates part-of-speech features, TF-IDF features, and Word2Vec features during the feature selection stage. The particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to allocate weights to part-of-speech tags, which enhances the significance of crucial information in requirement texts. Secondly, to overcome the performance limitations of standalone machine learning models, an improved stacking model is proposed. The Low Correlation Algorithm and Grid Search Algorithms are utilized in P-stacking to automatically select the optimal combination of the base models, which reduces manual intervention and improves prediction performance. The experimental results show that compared with the method based on TF-IDF features, the highest F1 scores of a standalone machine learning model in the three datasets were improved by 3.89%, 10.68%, and 21.4%, respectively, after integrating part-of-speech features and Word2Vec features. Compared with the method based on a standalone machine learning model, the improved stacking ensemble machine learning model improved F1 scores by 2.29%, 5.18%, and 7.47% in the testing and evaluation of three datasets, respectively. Around 50 million individuals worldwide suffer from epilepsy, a chronic, non-communicable brain disorder. Several screening methods, including electroencephalography, have been proposed to identify epileptic episodes. EEG data, which are frequently utilised to enhance epilepsy analysis, offer essential information on the electrical processes of the brain. Prior to the emergence of deep learning (DL), feature extraction was accomplished by standard machine learning techniques. As a result, they were only as good as the people who made the features by hand. But with DL, both feature extraction and classification are fully automated. These methods have significantly advanced several fields of medicine, including the diagnosis of epilepsy. In this paper, the works focused on automated epileptic seizure detection using ML and DL techniques are presented as well as their comparative analysis is done. The UCI-Epileptic Seizure Recognition dataset is used for training and validation. Some of the conventional ML and DL algorithms are used with a proposed model which uses long short-term memory (LSTM) to find the best approach. Post that comparative analysis is performed on these algorithms to find the best approach for epileptic seizure detection. As a result, the proposed model LSTM gives a validation accuracy of 97% giving the most appropriate and precise result as compared to other mentioned algorithms used in this study. Machine learning (ML) algorithms are increasingly used in power systems applications. One important application is the classification and localization of various types of transmission line faults. Using voltage and current measurements from phasor measurement units (PMUs), a number of useful features can be extracted, which can form the basis of a ML-based prediction of the fault type, line, and distance on the line. This paper proposes a technique to find the optimal number and placement of PMUs by performing thorough feature selection. The features are selected to maximize the accuracy of the ML classification and regression algorithms. The results show that for the IEEE 14 bus system, the use of only five PMUs is sufficient to obtain high levels of accuracy. For example, a testing accuracy of 99.0% and 97.1% can be achieved for the fault type and fault line location, respectively. As for the fault distance along the line, the testing MAE of 3.1% can be obtained along with an R 2 score of 94.4%. Adding more PMUs does not provide any additional value in terms of accuracy. Problems related to ventral hernia repairs (VHR) are very common, and evaluating them using computational methods can assist in selecting the most appropriate treatment. This study is based upon data from 3339 patients from different European countries observed during the last 12 years (2012–2023), which were collected by specialists in hernia surgery. Most patients underwent standard surgical procedures, with a growing trend towards laparoscopic surgery. This paper focuses on statistically evaluating the treatment methods in relation to patient age, body mass index (BMI), and the type of repair. Appropriate mathematical methods are employed to extract and classify the selected features, with emphasis on computational and machine-learning techniques. The paper presents surgical hernia treatment statistics related to patient age, BMI, and repair methods. The main conclusions point to mean groin hernia repair (GHR) complications of 19% for patients in the database. The accuracy of separating GHR mesh surgery with and without postoperative complications reached 74.4% using a two-layer neural network classification. Robotic surgeries represent 22.9% of all the evaluated hernia repairs. The proposed methodology suggests both an interdisciplinary approach and the utilization of computational intelligence in hernia surgery, potentially applicable in a clinical setting. Forest is an important resource for human survival, and forest fires are a serious threat to forest protection. Therefore, the early detection of fire and smoke is particularly important. Based on the manually set feature extraction method, the detection accuracy of the machine learning forest fire detection method is limited, and it is unable to deal with complex scenes. Meanwhile, most deep learning methods are difficult to deploy due to high computational costs. To address these issues, this paper proposes a lightweight forest fire detection model based on YOLOv8 (FFYOLO). Firstly, in order to better extract the features of fire and smoke, a channel prior dilatation attention module (CPDA) is proposed. Secondly, the mixed-classification detection head (MCDH), a new detection head, is designed. Furthermore, MPDIoU is introduced to enhance the regression and classification accuracy of the model. Then, in the Neck section, a lightweight GSConv module is applied to reduce parameters while maintaining model accuracy. Finally, the knowledge distillation strategy is used during training stage to enhance the generalization ability of the model and reduce the false detection. Experimental outcomes demonstrate that, in comparison to the original model, FFYOLO realizes an mAP0.5 of 88.8% on a custom forest fire dataset, which is 3.4% better than the original model, with 25.3% lower parameters and 9.3% higher frames per second (FPS). For insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) modules using wire bonding as the interconnection method, the main failure mechanism is cracking of the bonded interface. Studying the mechanical properties of the bonded interface is crucial for assessing the reliability of IGBT modules. In this paper, first, shear tests are conducted on the bonded interface to test the bonded interface's strength. Then, finite element–cohesive zone modeling (FE-CZM) is established to describe the mechanical behavior of the bonded interface. A novel machine learning (ML) architecture integrating a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a long short-term memory (LSTM) network is used to identify the shape and parameters of the traction separation law (TSL) of the FE-CZM model accurately and efficiently. The CNN-LSTM architecture not only has excellent feature extraction and sequence-data-processing abilities but can also effectively address the long-term dependency problem. A total of 1800 sets of datasets are obtained based on numerical computations, and the CNN-LSTM architecture is trained with load–displacement (F–δ) curves as input parameters and TSL shapes and parameters as output parameters. The results show that the error rate of the model for TSL shape prediction is only 0.186%. The performance metric's mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) is less than 3.5044% for all the predictions of the TSL parameters. Compared with separate CNN and LSTM architectures, the proposed CNN-LSTM-architecture approach exhibits obvious advantages in recognizing TSL shapes and parameters. A combination of the FE-CZM and ML methods in this paper provides a promising and effective solution for identifying the mechanical parameters of the bonded interfaces of IGBT modules. The rise of malware attacks presents a significant cyber-security challenge, with advanced techniques and offline command-and-control (C2) servers causing disruptions and financial losses. This paper proposes a methodology for dynamic malware analysis and classification using a malware Portable Executable (PE) file from the MalwareBazaar repository. It suggests effective strategies to mitigate the impact of evolving malware threats. For this purpose, a five-level approach for data management and experiments was utilised: (1) generation of a customised dataset by analysing a total of 582 malware and 438 goodware samples from Windows PE files; (2) feature extraction and feature scoring based on Chi2 and Gini importance; (3) empirical evaluation of six state-of-the-art baseline machine learning (ML) models, including Logistic Regression (LR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Naive Bayes (NB), Random Forest (RF), XGBoost (XGB), and K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), with the curated dataset; (4) malware family classification using VirusTotal APIs; and, finally, (5) categorisation of 23 distinct APIs from 266 malware APIs. According to the results, Gini's method takes a holistic view of feature scoring, considering a wider range of API activities. The RF achieved the highest precision of 0.99, accuracy of 0.96, area under the curve (AUC) of 0.98, and F1-score of 0.96, with a 0.93 true-positive rate (TPR) and 0.0098 false-positive rate (FPR), among all applied ML models. The results show that Trojans (27%) and ransomware (22%) are the most risky among 11 malware families. Windows-based APIs (22%), the file system (12%), and registry manipulation (8.2%) showcased their importance in detecting malicious activity in API categorisation. This paper considers a dual approach for feature reduction and scoring, resulting in an improved F1-score (2%), and the inclusion of AUC and specificity metrics distinguishes it from existing research (Section Comparative Analysis with Existing Approaches). The main purpose of this paper is to provide information on how to create a convolutional neural network (CNN) for extracting features from EEG signals. Our task was to understand the primary aspects of creating and fine-tuning CNNs for various application scenarios. We considered the characteristics of EEG signals, coupled with an exploration of various signal processing and data preparation techniques. These techniques include noise reduction, filtering, encoding, decoding, and dimension reduction, among others. In addition, we conduct an in-depth analysis of well-known CNN architectures, categorizing them into four distinct groups: standard implementation, recurrent convolutional, decoder architecture, and combined architecture. This paper further offers a comprehensive evaluation of these architectures, covering accuracy metrics, hyperparameters, and an appendix that contains a table outlining the parameters of commonly used CNN architectures for feature extraction from EEG signals. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major global health concern, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. While existing literature predominantly focuses on disease classification using clinical data, there exists a critical research gap concerning HCV genotyping based on genomic sequences. Accurate HCV genotyping is essential for patient management and treatment decisions. While the neural models excel at capturing complex patterns, they still face challenges, such as data scarcity, that exist a lot in computational genomics. To overcome this challenges, this paper introduces an advanced deep learning approach for HCV genotyping based on the graphical representation of nucleotide sequences that outperforms classical approaches. Notably, it is effective for both partial and complete HCV genomes and addresses challenges associated with imbalanced datasets. In this work, ten HCV genotypes: 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 2c, 3a, 3b, 4, 5, and 6 were used in the analysis. This study utilizes Chaos Game Representation for 2D mapping of genomic sequences, employing self-supervised learning using convolutional autoencoder for deep feature extraction, resulting in an outstanding performance for HCV genotyping compared to various machine learning and deep learning models. This baseline provides a benchmark against which the performance of the proposed approach and other models can be evaluated. The experimental results showcase a remarkable classification accuracy of over 99%, outperforming traditional deep learning models. This performance demonstrates the capability of the proposed model to accurately identify HCV genotypes in both partial and complete sequences and in dealing with data scarcity for certain genotypes. Three-way clustering uses core region and fringe region to describe a cluster, which divide the dataset into three parts. The division helps identify the central core and outer sparse regions of a cluster. One of the main challenges in three-way clustering is the meaningful construction of the two sets. Aimed at handling high-dimensional data and improving the stability of clustering, this paper proposes a novel three-way clustering method. The proposed method uses dimensionality reduction techniques to reduce data dimensions and eliminate noise. Based on the reduced dataset, random sampling and feature extraction are performed multiple times to introduce randomness and diversity, enhancing the algorithm's robustness. Ensemble strategies are applied on these subsets, and the k-means algorithm is utilized to obtain multiple clustering results. Based on these results, we obtain co-association frequency between different samples and fused clustering result using the single-linkage method of hierarchical clustering. In order to describe the core region and fringe region of each cluster, the similar class of each sample is defined by co-association frequency. The lower and upper approximations of each cluster are obtained based on similar class. The samples in the lower approximation of each cluster belong to the core region of the cluster. The differences between lower and upper approximations of each cluster are defined as fringe region. Therefore, a three-way explanation of each cluster is naturally formed. By employing various UC Irvine Machine Learning Repository (UCI) datasets and comparing different clustering metrics such as Normalized Mutual Information (NMI), Adjusted Rand Index (ARI), and Accuracy (ACC), the experimental results show that the proposed strategy is effective in improving the structure of clustering results. Signals play a fundamental role in science, technology, and communication by conveying information through varying patterns, amplitudes, and frequencies. This paper introduces innovative methodologies for processing electromyographic (EMG) signals to develop artificial intelligence systems capable of decoding muscle activity for controlling arm movements. The study investigates advanced signal processing techniques and machine learning classification algorithms using the GRABMyo dataset, aiming to enhance prosthetic control systems and rehabilitation technologies. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on signal processing techniques, including signal filtering and discrete wavelet transform (DWT), alongside a composite feature set comprising Mean Absolute Value (MAV), Waveform Length (WL), Zero Crossing (ZC), Slope Sign Changes (SSC), Root Mean Square (RMS), Enhanced Waveform Length (EWL), and Enhanced Mean Absolute Value (EMAV). These features, refined through Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) for dimensionality reduction, were classified using Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms. Signal filtering and DWT improved signal quality, facilitating better feature extraction, while the diverse feature set enhanced classification accuracy. LDA further improved accuracy by isolating the most informative features, and the SVM achieved optimal performance in decoding complex EMG patterns. The cognitive state of a person can be categorized using the circumplex model of emotional states, a continuous model of two dimensions: arousal and valence. The purpose of this research is to select a machine learning model(s) to be integrated into a virtual reality (VR) system that runs cognitive remediation exercises for people with mental health disorders. As such, the prediction of emotional states is essential to customize treatments for those individuals. We exploit the Remote Collaborative and Affective Interactions (RECOLA) database to predict arousal and valence values using machine learning techniques. RECOLA includes audio, video, and physiological recordings of interactions between human participants. To allow learners to focus on the most relevant data, features are extracted from raw data. Such features can be predesigned, learned, or extracted implicitly using deep learners. Our previous work on video recordings focused on predesigned and learned visual features. In this paper, we extend our work onto deep visual features. Our deep visual features are extracted using the MobileNet-v2 convolutional neural network (CNN) that we previously trained on RECOLA's video frames of full/half faces. As the final purpose of our work is to integrate our solution into a practical VR application using head-mounted displays, we experimented with half faces as a proof of concept. The extracted deep features were then used to predict arousal and valence values via optimizable ensemble regression. We also fused the extracted visual features with the predesigned visual features and predicted arousal and valence values using the combined feature set. In an attempt to enhance our prediction performance, we further fused the predictions of the optimizable ensemble model with the predictions of the MobileNet-v2 model. After decision fusion, we achieved a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.1140, a Pearson's correlation coefficient (PCC) of 0.8000, and a concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) of 0.7868 on arousal predictions. Remote sensing technology has been modernized by artificial intelligence, which has made it possible for deep learning algorithms to extract useful information from images. However, overfitting and lack of uncertainty quantification, high-resolution images, information loss in traditional feature extraction, and background information retrieval for detected objects limit the use of deep learning models in various remote sensing applications. This paper proposes a Bayes by backpropagation (BBB)-based system for scene-driven identification and information retrieval in order to overcome the above-mentioned problems. We present the Bayes R-CNN, a two-stage object detection technique to reduce overfitting while also quantifying uncertainty for each object recognized within a given image. To extract features more successfully, we replace the traditional feature extraction model with our novel Multi-Resolution Extraction Network (MRENet) model. We propose the multi-level feature fusion module (MLFFM) in the inner lateral connection and a Bayesian Distributed Lightweight Attention Module (BDLAM) to reduce information loss in the feature pyramid network (FPN). In addition, our system incorporates a Bayesian image super-resolution model which enhances the quality of the image to improve the prediction accuracy of the Bayes R-CNN. Notably, MRENet is used to classify the background of the detected objects to provide detailed interpretation of the object. Our proposed system is comprehensively trained and assessed utilizing the state-of-the-art DIOR and HRSC2016 datasets. Historically, the analysis of stimulus-dependent time–frequency patterns has been the cornerstone of most electroencephalography (EEG) studies. The abnormal oscillations in high-frequency waves associated with psychotic disorders during sensory and cognitive tasks have been studied many times. However, any significant dissimilarity in the resting-state low-frequency bands is yet to be established. Spectral analysis of the alpha and delta band waves shows the effectiveness of stimulus-independent EEG in identifying the abnormal activity patterns of pathological brains. A generalized model incorporating multiple frequency bands should be more efficient in associating potential EEG biomarkers with first-episode psychosis (FEP), leading to an accurate diagnosis. We explore multiple machine-learning methods, including random-forest, support vector machine, and Gaussian process classifier (GPC), to demonstrate the practicality of resting-state power spectral density (PSD) to distinguish patients of FEP from healthy controls. A comprehensive discussion of our preprocessing methods for PSD analysis and a detailed comparison of different models are included in this paper. Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a spectrum of motor and non-motor symptoms, prominently featuring the freezing of gait (FOG), which significantly impairs patients' quality of life. Despite extensive research, the precise mechanisms underlying FOG remain elusive, posing challenges for effective management and treatment. This paper presents a comprehensive meta-analysis of FOG prediction and detection methodologies, with a focus on the integration of wearable sensor technology and machine learning (ML) approaches. Through an exhaustive review of the literature, this study identifies key trends, datasets, preprocessing techniques, feature extraction methods, evaluation metrics, and comparative analyses between ML and non-ML approaches. The analysis also explores the utilization of cueing devices. The limited adoption of explainable AI (XAI) approaches in FOG prediction research represents a significant gap. Improving user acceptance and comprehension requires an understanding of the logic underlying algorithm predictions. Current FOG detection and prediction research has a number of limitations, which are identified in the discussion. Tabular data analysis is a critical task in various domains, enabling us to uncover valuable insights from structured datasets. While traditional machine learning methods can be used for feature engineering and dimensionality reduction, they often struggle to capture the intricate relationships and dependencies within real-world datasets. In this paper, we present Multi-representation DeepInsight (MRep-DeepInsight), a novel extension of the DeepInsight method designed to enhance the analysis of tabular data. By generating multiple representations of samples using diverse feature extraction techniques, our approach is able to capture a broader range of features and reveal deeper insights. We demonstrate the effectiveness of MRep-DeepInsight on single-cell datasets, Alzheimer's data, and artificial data, showcasing an improved accuracy over the original DeepInsight approach and machine learning methods like random forest, XGBoost, LightGBM, FT-Transformer and L2-regularized logistic regression. Inversion of magnetic basement interfaces in basins is essential for interpreting potential field data and studying geothermal resource distribution, as well as basin formation and evolution. This paper introduces a novel method for inverting magnetic basement interfaces using a random forest regression (RFR) algorithm that combines potential field processing and machine learning techniques. The method creates magnetic base interface models and corresponding magnetic anomaly data through the random midpoint displacement method and magnetic interface finite element forward simulation. These anomalies are then processed using techniques such as directional transformations, analytical continuation, spatial derivatives, and fractional transformations. Feature attributes are extracted, and Gini importance is utilized to measure the contributions of feature factors, identify effective features, and enhance algorithm efficiency. Protein-DNA complex interactivity plays a crucial role in biological activities such as gene expression, modification, replication and transcription. Understanding the physiological significance of protein-DNA binding interfacial hot spots, as well as the development of computational biology, depends on the precise identification of these regions. In this paper, a hot spot prediction method called EC-PDH is proposed. First, we extracted features of these hot spots' solid solvent-accessible surface area (ASA) and secondary structure, and then the mean, variance, energy and autocorrelation function values of the first three intrinsic modal components (IMFs) of these conventional features were extracted as new features via the empirical modal decomposition algorithm (EMD). A total of 218 dimensional features were obtained. For feature selection, we used the maximum correlation minimum redundancy sequence forward selection method (mRMR-SFS) to obtain an optimal 11-dimensional-feature subset. To address the issue of data imbalance, we used the SMOTE-Tomek algorithm to balance positive and negative samples and finally used cat gradient boosting (CatBoost) to construct our hot spot prediction model for protein-DNA binding interfaces. Our method performs well on the test set, with AUC, MCC and F1 score values of 0.847, 0.543 and 0.772, respectively. Various techniques have been employed to detect damage in civil engineering structures. Apart from the model-based approach, which demands the frequent updating of its corresponding finite element method (FEM)-built model, data-driven methods have gained prominence. Environmental and operational effects significantly affect damage detection due to the presence of damage-related trends in their analyses. Time-domain approaches such as autoregression and metrics such as the Mahalanobis squared distance have been utilized to mitigate these effects. In the realm of machine learning (ML) models, their effectiveness relies heavily on the type and quality of the extracted features, making this aspect a focal point of attention. The objective of this work is therefore to deploy and observe potential feature extraction approaches used as input in training fully data-driven damage detection machine learning models. The most damage-sensitive segment (MDSS) feature extraction technique, which potentially treats signals under multiple conditions, is also proposed and deployed. It identifies potential segments for each feature coefficient under a defined criterion. Therefore, 680 signals, each consisting of 8192 data points, are recorded using accelerometer sensors at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the USA. The data are obtained from a three-story 3D building frame and are utilized in this research for a mainly data-driven damage detection task. Three approaches are implemented to replace four missing signals with the generated ones. In this paper, multiple fast Fourier and wavelet-transformed features are employed to evaluate their performance. Most importantly, a power spectral density (PSD)-based feature extraction approach that considers the maximum variability criterion to identify the most sensitive segments is developed and implemented. The performance of the MDSS selection technique, proposed in this work, surpasses that of all 18 trained neural networks (NN) and recurrent neural network (RNN) models, achieving more than 80% prediction accuracy on an unseen prediction dataset. It also significantly reduces the feature dimension. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is conducted on signal segmentation, overlapping, the treatment of a training dataset imbalance, and principal component analysis (PCA) implementation across various combinations of features. Indoor localization has long been a challenging task due to the complexity and dynamism of indoor environments. This paper proposes ULG-SLAM, a novel unsupervised learning and geometric-based visual SLAM algorithm for robot localizability estimation to improve the accuracy and robustness of visual SLAM. Firstly, a dynamic feature filtering based on unsupervised learning and moving consistency checks is developed to eliminate the features of dynamic objects. Secondly, an improved line feature extraction algorithm based on LSD is proposed to optimize the effect of geometric feature extraction. Thirdly, geometric features are used to optimize localizability estimation, and an adaptive weight model and attention mechanism are built using the method of region delimitation and region growth. Finally, to verify the effectiveness and robustness of localizability estimation, multiple indoor experiments using the EuRoC dataset and TUM RGB-D dataset are conducted. Compared with ORBSLAM2, the experimental results demonstrate that absolute trajectory accuracy can be improved by 95% for equivalent processing speed in walking sequences. In fr3/walking_xyz and fr3/walking_half, ULG-SLAM tracks more trajectories than DS-SLAM, and the ATE RMSE is improved by 36% and 6%, respectively. Effective management of dementia requires the timely detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This paper introduces a multi-objective optimization approach for selecting EEG channels (and features) for the purpose of detecting MCI. Firstly, each EEG signal from each channel is decomposed into subbands using either variational mode decomposition (VMD) or discrete wavelet transform (DWT). A feature is then extracted from each subband using one of the following measures: standard deviation, interquartile range, band power, Teager energy, Katz's and Higuchi's fractal dimensions, Shannon entropy, sure entropy, or threshold entropy. Different machine learning techniques are used to classify the features of MCI cases from those of healthy controls. The classifier's performance is validated using leave-one-subject-out (LOSO) cross-validation (CV). The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA)-II is designed with the aim of minimizing the number of EEG channels (or features) and maximizing classification accuracy. The performance is evaluated using a publicly available online dataset containing EEGs from 19 channels recorded from 24 participants. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in performance when utilizing the NSGA-II algorithm. By selecting only a few appropriate EEG channels, the LOSO CV-based results show a significant improvement compared to using all 19 channels. Additionally, the outcomes indicate that accuracy can be further improved by selecting suitable features from different channels. For instance, by combining VMD and Teager energy, the SVM accuracy obtained using all channels is 74.24%. Interestingly, when only five channels are selected using NSGA-II, the accuracy increases to 91.56%. The accuracy is further improved to 95.28% when using only 8 features selected from 7 channels. This demonstrates that by choosing informative features or channels while excluding noisy or irrelevant information, the impact of noise is reduced, resulting in improved accuracy. These promising findings indicate that, with a limited number of channels and features, accurate diagnosis of MCI is achievable, which opens the door for its application in clinical practice. Accurate state-of-health (SOH) estimation is critical for reliable and safe operation of lithium-ion batteries. However, reliable and stable battery SOH estimation remains challenging due to diverse battery types and operating conditions. In this paper, we propose a physics-informed neural network (PINN) for accurate and stable estimation of battery SOH. Specifically, we model the attributes that affect the battery degradation from the perspective of empirical degradation and state space equations, and utilize neural networks to capture battery degradation dynamics. A general feature extraction method is designed to extract statistical features from a short period of data before the battery is fully charged, enabling our method applicable to different battery types and charge/discharge protocols. Additionally, we generate a comprehensive dataset consisting of 55 lithium-nickel-cobalt-manganese-oxide (NCM) batteries. Combined with three other datasets from different manufacturers, we use a total of 387 batteries with 310,705 samples to validate our method. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) is 0.87%. Our proposed PINN has demonstrated remarkable performance in regular experiments, small sample experiments, and transfer experiments when compared to alternative neural networks. In order to solve the problems of traditional mental stress detection in college students that are time-consuming, random, and subjective, this paper proposes an intelligent perception-driven mental stress assessment method for college students. First, we analyze the factors in SRQ and SCL-90, which can be measured by intelligent sensing methods, including sleep, exercise, social interaction, and environment, and then perform feature extraction. Secondly, we use machine learning methods to build a mental stress assessment model. The Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) model is used to explain the training results. Assessing mobility in daily life can provide significant insights into several clinical conditions, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of wearable devices' performance in gait speed estimation and explore optimal device combinations for everyday use. Using data collected from smartphones, smartwatches, and smart shoes, we evaluated the individual capabilities of each device and explored their synergistic effects when combined, thereby accommodating the preferences and possibilities of individuals for wearing different types of devices. Our study involved 20 healthy subjects performing a modified Six-Minute Walking Test (6MWT) under various conditions. The results revealed only little performance differences among devices, with the combination of smartwatches and smart shoes exhibiting superior estimation accuracy. Particularly, smartwatches captured additional health-related information and demonstrated enhanced accuracy when paired with other devices. Surprisingly, wearing all devices concurrently did not yield optimal results, suggesting a potential redundancy in feature extraction. Background: Glaucoma, the second leading cause of global blindness, demands timely detection due to its asymptomatic progression. This paper introduces an advanced computerized system, integrates Machine Learning (ML), convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and image processing for accurate glaucoma detection using medical imaging data, surpassing prior research efforts. Method: Developing a hybrid glaucoma detection framework using CNNs (ResNet50, VGG-16) and Random Forest. Models analyze pre-processed retinal images independently, and post-processing rules combine predictions for an overall glaucoma impact assessment. Result: The hybrid framework achieves a significant 95.41% accuracy, with precision and recall at 99.37% and 88.37%, respectively. Path planning is an indispensable component in guiding unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) from their initial positions to designated destinations, aiming to determine trajectories that are either optimal or near-optimal. While conventional path-planning techniques have been employed for this purpose, planners utilizing reinforcement learning (RL) exhibit superior adaptability within exceedingly complex and dynamic environments. Nevertheless, existing RL-based path planners encounter several shortcomings, notably, redundant map representations, inadequate feature extraction, and limited adaptiveness across diverse environments. In response to these challenges, this paper proposes an innovative and highly self-adaptive path-planning approach based on Transformer encoder feature extraction coupled with incremental reinforcement learning (IRL). Initially, an autoencoder is utilized to compress redundant map representations, providing the planner with sufficient environmental data while minimizing dimensional complexity. Subsequently, the Transformer encoder, renowned for its capacity to analyze global long-range dependencies, is employed to capture intricate correlations among UGV statuses at continuous intervals. Finally, IRL is harnessed to enhance the path planner's generalization capabilities, particularly when the trained agent is deployed in environments distinct from its training counterparts. Our empirical findings demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms traditional uniform-sampling-based approaches in terms of execution time, path length, and trajectory smoothness. Following the advancement of the internet, social media gradually replaced the traditional media; consequently, the overwhelming and ever-growing process of fake news generation and propagation has now become a widespread concern. It is undoubtedly necessary to detect such news; however, there are certain challenges such as events, verification and datasets, and reference datasets related to this area face various issues such as the lack of sufficient information about news samples, the absence of subject diversity, etc. To mitigate these issues, this paper proposes a two-phase model using natural language processing and machine learning algorithms. In the first phase, two new structural features, along with other key features are extracted from news samples. In the second phase, a hybrid method based on curriculum strategy, consisting of statistical data, and a k -nearest neighbor algorithm is introduced to improve the performance of deep learning models. Treatment effect estimation (TEE) is widely adopted in various domains such as machine learning, dvertising and marketing, and medicine. During the TEE, there normally exist selection bias on counterfactual prediction, which results in different distributions of covariates between the treated and control groups. One important challenge in TEE is to mitigate the impact of selection bias, which has attracted a lot of research in recent years. To address this challenge, existing neural network-based methods generally aim to minimize the distribution differences using integral probability metrics. However, minimizing the distribution differences may inadvertently remove outcome-related information during the balancing procedure, which has negative impact on the accuracy of TEE. In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised learning approach to conduct TEE. Rather than minimizing the distribution differences, we first introduce the concept of virtual samples which have identical covariates as observed samples but with different treatments. In this way, we aim to simulate the scenario where each sample receives both treatment and control. Next, we propose a self-supervised domain embedding learning (SDEL) approach to conduct TEE. In SDEL, we propose to learn both treated and control embeddings for observed and virtual samples, thereby learning the effects of different treatments. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to introduce the concept of virtual samples and the first to conduct embedding learning in TEE. Building upon SDEL, we propose a feature extraction counterfactual regression network (FE-CFR), in which we propose a feature extraction module (FEM) to estimate the importance of different covariates. Compared with existing TEE methods, our proposed self-supervised learning approach to could improve the accuracy of TEE. Addressing this problem with an early attack detection mechanism with a reduced missing rate and decreased response time is critical. The development of an Intelligent IDS is vital to the mission-critical infrastructure of a smart grid to prevent physical sabotage and processing downtime. This paper aims to develop a robust Anomaly-based IDS using a statistical approach with a machine learning classifier to discriminate cyberattacks from natural faults and man-made events to avoid blackouts and cascading failures. The novel mechanism of a statistical approach with a machine learning (SAML) classifier based on Neighborhood Component Analysis, ExtraTrees, and AdaBoost for feature extraction, bagging, and boosting, respectively, is proposed with optimal hyperparameter tuning for the early discrimination of cyberattacks from natural faults and man-made events. The proposed model is tested using the publicly available Industrial Control Systems Cyber Attack Power System (Triple Class) dataset with a three-bus/two-line transmission system from Mississippi State University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Furthermore, the proposed model is evaluated for scalability and generalization using the publicly accessible IEEE 14-bus and 57-bus system datasets of False Data Injection (FDI) attacks. Human emotion recognition is crucial in various technological domains, reflecting our growing reliance on technology. Facial expressions play a vital role in conveying and preserving human emotions. While deep learning has been successful in recognizing emotions in video sequences, it struggles to effectively model spatio-temporal interactions and identify salient features, limiting its accuracy. This research paper proposed an innovative algorithm for facial expression recognition which combined a deep learning algorithm and dynamic texture methods. In the initial phase of this study, facial features were extracted using the Visual-Geometry-Group (VGG19) model and input into Long-Short-Term-Memory (LSTM) cells to capture spatio-temporal information. Additionally, the HOG-HOF descriptor was utilized to extract dynamic features from video sequences, capturing changes in facial appearance over time. Combining these models using the Multimodal-Compact-Bilinear (MCB) model resulted in an effective descriptor vector. This vector was then classified using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier, chosen for its simpler interpretability compared to deep learning models. This choice facilitates better understanding of the decision-making process behind emotion classification. In the experimental phase, the fusion method outperformed existing state-of-the-art methods on the eNTERFACE05 database, with an improvement margin of approximately 1%. Surface imperfections in steel materials potentially degrade quality and performance, thereby escalating the risk of accidents in engineering applications. Manual inspection, while traditional, is laborious and lacks consistency. However, recent advancements in machine learning and computer vision have paved the way for automated steel defect detection, yielding superior accuracy and efficiency. This paper introduces an innovative deep learning model, GDCP-YOLO, devised for multi-category steel defect detection. We enhance the reference YOLOv8n architecture by incorporating adaptive receptive fields via the DCNV2 module and channel attention in C2f. We incorporate the efficient Faster Block and employ Ghost convolutions to generate more feature maps with reduced computation. Ultrasonic diagnostics is the earliest way to predict industrial faults. Usually, a contact microphone is employed for detection, but the recording will be contaminated with noise. In this paper, a dataset that contains 10 main faults of pipelines and motors is analyzed from which 30 different features in the time and frequency domains are extracted. Afterward, for dimensionality reduction, principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) are performed. In the subsequent phase, recursive feature elimination (RFE) is employed as a strategic method to analyze and select the most relevant features for the classifiers. Next, predictive models consisting of k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Logistic Regression (LR), Decision Tree (DT), Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are employed. Then, in order to solve the classification problem, a stacking classifier based on a meta-classifier which combines multiple classification models is introduced. Furthermore, the k-fold cross-validation technique is employed to assess the effectiveness of the model in handling new data for the evaluation of experimental results in ultrasonic fault detection. With the proposed method, the accuracy is around 5% higher over five cross folds with the least amount of variation. The timing evaluation of the meta model on the 64 MHz Cortex M4 microcontroller unit (MCU) revealed an execution time of 11 ms, indicating it could be a promising solution for real-time monitoring. The growing Internet of Things (IoT) landscape requires robust security; traditional rule-based systems are insufficient, driving the integration of machine learning (ML) for effective intrusion detection. This paper provides an inclusive overview of research efforts focused on harnessing ML methodologies to fortify intrusion detection within IoT. Tailored feature extraction techniques are pivotal for achieving high detection accuracy while minimizing false positives. The study employs the IoT23 dataset from Kaggle and incorporates four optimization algorithms – Particle Swarm Optimizer, Whale-Pearson optimization algorithm, Harris-Hawks Optimizer, and Support Vector Machine with Particle Swarm optimization algorithm (SVM-PSO) – for feature extraction and selection. A comparison with ML algorithms such as logistic regression, decision tree and naïve Bayes classifier highlights Harris-Hawks Optimizer as the most effective. Non-invasive detection of hemoglobin (Hb) concentration is of great clinical value for health screening and intraoperative blood transfusion. However, the accuracy and stability of non-invasive detection still need to be improved to meet clinical requirement. This paper proposes a non-invasive Hb detection method using ensemble extreme learning machine (EELM) regression based on eight-wavelength PhotoPlethysmoGraphic (PPG) signals. Firstly, a mathematical model for non-invasive Hb detection based on the Beer-Lambert law is established. Secondly, the captured eight-channel PPG signals are denoised and fifty-six feature values are extracted according to the derived mathematical model. Thirdly, a recursive feature elimination (RFE) algorithm is used to select the features that contribute most to the Hb prediction. Finally, a regression model is built by integrating several independent ELM models to improve prediction stability and accuracy. Experiments conducted on 249 clinical data points (199 cases as the training dataset and 50 cases as the test dataset) evaluate the proposed method, achieving a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.72 g/dL and a Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) of 0.76 (p < 0.01) between predicted and reference values. The results demonstrate that the proposed non-invasive Hb detection method exhibits a strong correlation with traditional invasive methods, suggesting its potential for non-invasive detection of Hb concentration. Building change detection (BCD) plays a vital role in city planning and development, ensuring the timely detection of urban changes near metro lines. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has the advantage of providing continuous image time series with all-weather and all-time capabilities for earth observation compared with optical remote sensors. Deep learning algorithms have extensively been applied for BCD to realize the automatic detection of building changes. However, existing deep learning-based BCD methods with SAR images suffer limited accuracy due to the speckle noise effect and insufficient feature extraction. In this paper, an attention-guided dual-branch fusion network (ADF-Net) is proposed for urban BCD to address this limitation. Specifically, high-resolution SAR images collected by TerraSAR-X have been utilized to detect building changes near metro line 8 in Shanghai with the ADF-Net model. In particular, a dual-branch structure is employed in ADF-Net to extract heterogeneous features from radiometrically calibrated TerraSAR-X images and log ratio images (i.e., difference images (DIs) in dB scale). In addition, the attention-guided cross-layer addition (ACLA) blocks are used to precisely locate the features of changed areas with the transformer-based attention mechanism, and the global attention mechanism with the residual unit (GAM-RU) blocks is introduced to enhance the representation learning capabilities and solve the problems of gradient fading. The effectiveness of ADF-Net is verified using evaluation metrics. The results demonstrate that ADF-Net generates better building change maps than other methods, including U-Net, FC-EF, SNUNet-CD, A2Net, DMINet, USFFCNet, EATDer, and DRPNet. As a result, some building area changes near metro line 8 in Shanghai have been accurately detected by ADF-Net. This paper introduces a novel nothing-on-road (NOR) bridge weigh-in-motion (BWIM) approach with deep learning (DL) and non-invasive ground-based radar (GBR) time-series data. BWIMs allow site-specific structural health monitoring (SHM) but are usually difficult to attach and maintain. GBR measures the bridge deflection contactless. In this study, GBR and an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) monitor a two-span bridge in Germany to gather ground-truth data. Based on the UAV data, we determine vehicle type, lane, locus, speed, axle count, and axle spacing for single-presence vehicle crossings. Since displacement is a global response, using peak detection like conventional strain-based BWIMs is challenging. Therefore, we investigate data-driven machine learning approaches to extract the vehicle configurations directly from the displacement data. Despite a small and imbalanced real-world dataset, the proposed approaches classify, e.g., the axle count for trucks with a balanced accuracy of 76.7% satisfyingly. Additionally, we demonstrate that, for the selected bridge, high-frequency vibrations can coincide with axles crossing the junction between the street and the bridge. We evaluate whether filtering approaches via bandpass filtering or wavelet transform can be exploited for axle count and axle spacing identification. The development of abnormal cells in the brain, some of which may turn out to be cancerous, is known as a brain tumor. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most common technique for detecting brain tumors. Information about the abnormal tissue growth in the brain is visible from the MRI scans. In most research papers, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms are applied to detect brain tumors. The radiologist can make speedy decisions because of this prediction. The proposed work creates a hybrid convolution neural networks (CNN) model and logistic regression (LR). The visual geometry group16 (VGG16) which was pretrained model is used for the extraction of features. To reduce the complexity, we eliminated the last eight layers of VGG16. From this transformed model, the features are extracted in the form of a vector array. These features fed into different ML classifiers like support vector machine (SVM), and Naïve Bayes (NB), LR, extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), AdaBoost, and random forest for training and testing. The performance of different classifiers is compared. The CNN-LR hybrid combination outperformed the remaining classifiers.
