This paper examines the violence during the Papua New Guinea 2022 National General Election (2022 NGE). The 2022 NGE has been described by notable observers as the most compromised election since Independence, marked by numerous reported cases of hijacking, bribery, corruption, and aggressive violence across the country, particularly in certain parts of the Highlands region. This analysis is founded on anecdotal evidence from newspapers, current available literature, and personal experiences as a citizen of the country. The paper asserts that the causes of election violence are intricately woven into the socio-economic, political, and bureaucratic operational structure of the nation. It concludes that Papua New Guinea's democracy will remain seriously imperilled by violence unless socio-economic structural issues are addressed and the roles and functions of the Electoral Commission are redefined to ensure that the 2027 and subsequent elections can be conducted peacefully. The paper also concludes that the roles of the Legislature and Executive branches of Government need redefinition and streamlining through legislative reform to prevent one branch from interfering with the function of the other. The Arafura and Timor Seas (ATS) are home to a wealth of both living and non-living marine resources, including major fisheries, significant oil and gas reserves, extensive coastal and marine habitats, and globally-significant populations of migratory, rare, threatened, and endangered marine species. These resources provide goods and services valued at more than US$7.3B to neighboring nations, annually. The waters of the ATS are bounded by Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea and Australia; and significantly, are defined as a 'semi-enclosed seas' under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). UNCLOS places a responsibility and an obligation on countries bordering enclosed and semi-enclosed seas to cooperate in resource management, the protection of the marine environment and marine scientific research. Recent assessments indicate that the marine environment in the ATS region is in serious decline, primarily as a result of over-harvesting and other direct and indirect impacts of anthropogenic stresses and global climate change. Transboundary issues such as unsustainable and illegal fishing activities, marine and land-based pollution, marine habitat and biodiversity decline, and climate change negatively impact fishery resources, ecosystem quality, and human well-being. Over the past 2 decades ATS littoral countries have progressed toward transboundary management of the region. This paper elaborates on the current status and threats to coastal and marine resources in the ATS region and in particular, the major efforts of the four littoral ATS countries to address transboundary environmental issues at the regional, national, and project site levels through the US$9.7M, 5-year, UN GEF-funded ATSEA-2 program. A key result of the ATSEA Program is regional collaboration that supports stakeholder engagement for meaningful resource management and protection is essential for the sustainable use and development of marine resources in the ATS. Ultra-depleted peridotites have been reported from the mantle sections of a number of ophiolitic complexes (e.g., Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia). Such rocks are residues derived from boninitic melts in supra-subduction zones, particularly in forearcs. In the mantle wedge, slab-derived fluid-melt containing H2O increases the degree of melting and metasomatizes the peridotites. However, the relationship between high-degree melting under hydrous conditions and metasomatism is not well understood. In this paper, we report petrological features of amphibole-bearing ultra-depleted peridotites from the Horokanai ophiolite, Hokkaido, Japan. The peridotite complex in the Horokanai ophiolite consists of clinopyroxene-free harzburgite, orthopyroxene-poor harzburgite, and dunite. The harzburgites contain high-Cr# spinel (0.70-0.85) and orthopyroxene with very low abundances of incompatible elements (e.g., Y < 0.01 μg/g; Ti ~ 2 μg/g). Pargasitic-edenitic amphibole occurs as spinel-hosted inclusions and as an interstitial phase to olivine and orthopyroxene. The harzburgite is a residue formed by the high-degree melting caused by fluid flux. The hydrous conditions cause incongruent melting of orthopyroxene, producing a depleted Si-rich melt (i.e., a boninitic melt). Because such Si-rich melt can coexist with Cr-rich spinel under these conditions, amphibole is ultimately crystallized in the harzburgite. Alan Ward (1935–2014) delivered his inaugural professorial address at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales, on 23 March 1988. Following his 1987 promotion to Professor, a position he held until his retirement in 1996, the lecture marked a milestone in his career, which to that point had included not only his influential study, A Show of Justice: Racial ‘Amalgamation’ in Nineteenth Century New Zealand (1974),1 but also important work on land reform in Papua New Guinea, the New Hebrides/Vanuatu, and New Caledonia.2 Some 35 years after its delivery and ten years after Ward’s death, the Journal of Pacific History now publishes the lecture (as retrieved from his papers and transcribed by his daughter, Ingrid Ward) in its entirety. Discussions of colonialism and decolonialism often take as a starting point an assumption that these processes can be defined in particular ways and consequently morally evaluated. Whilst defining terms can act as a theoretical or political simplification that is indispensable for certain kinds of discussion, it is important to remember that to evoke 'colonialism' is to make a claim about and on social relations and obligations. The papers in this collection draw our attention to the ways in which 'colonialism' was never a simply defined bilateral relationship between an easily defined coloniser and an equally easily defined colonised. The experience of PNG around the time of political independence instead draws our attention to the multiplicity of ways in which particular relations were described as or denied as being 'colonial'. This historical re‐examination acts as a useful nuance to contemporary discussions of decolonisation that potentially paradoxically reinscribe old colonial binaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the history of Enga Province, Papua New Guinea, from 1952 to 1975 in order to understand how pre‐colonial governance of the province laid the groundwork for the problems of weak governance that plagued Enga in the independence era. The most appropriate models to understand this issue, the article claims, come not from the comparative study of decolonised states such as those in Africa, but from the European experience of state formation. Drawing on these models, the article makes two arguments. First, that Enga was governed lightly and ineffectively in the colonial period because there was little Australia wanted to extract from Enga. Second, the structural situation remains largely the same today: governance in Enga is weak because there is little incentive for the national government to rule. Using Enga as a synecdoche for Papua New Guinea as a whole, this paper argues that we may best understand governance issues in Papua New Guinea using models and theories that emphasise the historical continuity between the pre‐ and post‐independence governments of the country. The 1964 UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is often presented as a pivotal moment in the post-Second World War relations between the Global North and Global South. At this conference, Australian policymakers devised a Middle Zone policy that sought to present Australia as neither 'developed' nor 'developing'. This had significant consequences for the colonial administration of Papua New Guinea (PNG), which Australia administered as a UN Trust Territory. In the two decades following the Second World War, Australia had administered PNG in a way that promoted gradual development, arguing that the road to independence would be a slow one. By 1964, however, international pressure (exemplified by the call for UNCTAD) had made this policy less viable. This article examines the impact of UNCTAD on the decolonisation of PNG, as it sparked an acceleration of calls for PNG independence in the second half of the 1960s. The Conference also prompted indigenous leaders within PNG to engage with the increasingly diverse field of development in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Local leaders, such as Michael Somare, became increasingly prominent as decolonisation loomed large. Their developmental approaches, informed by other movements within the Global South, steadily became a part of the plan for an independent PNG. UNCTAD can be seen as a starting point for this process. By examining the connections between the 1964 UNCTAD and the decolonisation of PNG, this paper adds a new dimension to the scholarship of the Conference as well as the process of decolonisation in the Pacific. This paper investigates the potential labour efficiencies and socio-cultural benefits of agroforestry for coffee smallholders practising low input production strategies. Employing both qualitative and quantitative methods, our case study of coffee smallholders in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, shows that despite managing very small holdings of coffee trees (< 500 trees), productivity is challenged by labour shortages and by very low levels of farm inputs. Constraints on labour supply include barriers to mobilising women's labour; competition for labour from alternative livelihoods; the absence of a market in hired labour; and the time, labour and income demands of the indigenous socio-economy. The indigenous social economy draws heavily on smallholders' time, labour and coffee income, to the extent that there is little labour for coffee garden maintenance and little coffee income invested in other farm inputs. To address these input shortfalls we explore the potential of ecosystem services from shade-grown coffee to generate labour efficiencies to partly fill some of the unmet maintenance requirements of coffee gardens and to partly fill the role of other farm inputs. Coffee extension must become more holistic and consider smallholder families' diverse livelihoods and recognise the enduring nature of the low input production strategy, its socio-cultural value, its role in determining life quality, and thus its resistance to change. Extension must align with, rather than challenge, the low input production strategy to promote the potential labour efficiencies and benefits of agroforestry to create more resilient, sustainable and culturally-enriching coffee-based farming systems. The World Health Organization (WHO) endorsed the use of triple-drug mass drug administration (MDA) regimen with ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and albendazole (commonly abbreviated as IDA) to accelerate the elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) as a public health problem in settings where onchocerciasis is not co-endemic. The National Programme for Elimination of LF (NPELF) in Kenya was among the first adopters of the IDA-MDA and two annual rounds were provided in 2018 and 2019 to the residents of Lamu County and Jomvu sub-County in the coast region. This study documented the feasibility of successfully delivering the two rounds of IDA-MDA. An operational research study was undertaken to determine efficient sampling strategies, indicators, and the appropriate population groups that could be used for the monitoring and evaluation of LF programs using IDA-MDA for the elimination of the disease as a public health problem. Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted at baseline in 2018 before IDA-MDA and an impact assessment 17 months after the second round of IDA-MDA. The reported epidemiological treatment coverage was at least 80% in all implementation units during each round of IDA-MDA. Blood samples were tested for filarial antigenemia using commercial Filariasis Test Strips (FTS) and any individual found to be positive was tested again at night for the presence of microfilariae in finger prick blood smears using microscopy. The overall prevalence of circulating filarial antigen (CFA) was relatively low at the baseline survey with Jomvu having 1.39% (95% CI: 0.91, 2.11) and Lamu having 0.48% (95% CI: 0.21, 1.13). Significant reduction in CFA prevalence was observed during the impact assessment after two annual rounds of treatment. The overall relative reduction (%) in CFA prevalence following the two rounds of MDA with IDA was significant in both Jomvu (52.45%, Z = -2.46, P < 0.02) and Lamu (52.71%, Z = -1.97, P < 0.05). Heterogeneity, however, was observed in the CFA prevalence reduction between random and purposive clusters, as well as between adult and child populations. The results of the impact assessment survey offered strong evidence that it was safe to stop the IDA-MDA in the two EUs because transmission appears to have been interrupted. It is also important to implement a post-treatment surveillance system which would enable efficient detection of any recrudescence of LF transmission at a sub-evaluation unit level. Our findings show that IDA-MDA may be considered for acceleration of LF elimination in other settings where onchocerciasis is not co-endemic. Author summary: Preventive chemotherapy with antifilarial drugs is currently the mainstay public health intervention recommended for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis (commonly known as elephantiasis) in endemic countries. Two-drug regimen mass drug administration of albendazole plus either diethylcarbamazine or ivermectin has been used widely in most countries since the launch of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis by the World Health Organization in 2000. Safety and efficacy clinical studies conducted in Papua New Guinea have shown that co-administration of three antifilarial drugs namely, ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine and albendazole is superior to the two-drug regimen diethylcarbamazine and albendazole in clearance of microfilariae from the bloodstream. Consequently, the triple-drug regimen was endorsed for accelerating efforts to eliminate lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem in areas where onchocerciasis is not co-endemic. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of delivering mass treatment with the triple-drug regimen under programmatic conditions. An operational research study was conducted to determine the optimal sampling strategies, indicator (or set of indicators), and study populations for monitoring and evaluation of lymphatic filariasis elimination programs using the triple-drug regimen mass treatment. Two rounds of mass treatment with the triple-drug regimen were given to the residents of Lamu County (comprising of Lamu East and Lamu West sub-counties) and Jomvu sub-County (in Mombasa) in November 2018 and November 2019. The programme epidemiological treatment coverage was at least 80% in each implementation unit during the two treatment rounds. The preventive treatment resulted in significant reductions in the prevalence of the disease with the number of positive cases being fewer than the threshold recommended for areas where transmission is likely to be no longer sustainable. As the Northern Australia Quarantine Strategy (NAQS) approaches its thirty-fifth year of operations, we outline the Australian Government's approach to address extraordinary natural and human mediated biosecurity challenges across our sparsely populated northern shores. NAQS is a concept that is unique worldwide but could be equally well applied in many other island nations dealing with similar circumstances. Key to the success of the NAQS has been long collaborations with biosecurity scientists in the neighbouring nations to the north. Some examples of how these relationships have borne fruit as we tackle regionally important plant diseases are illustrated. We also focus on how the plant pathology component of the program developed and evolved from the early 1990s to 2023. This is the story of how the Australian Government has been protecting Australia's remote northern coastline from biosecurity invasions from neighbouring countries. It is a story of boots on the ground plant health surveillance across Australia's north and also over the horizon, in the countries that lie so close to our northern shore. Expanding social media research on the Pacific Digital Revolution, this article explores the significance of Papua New Guineans' digital and visual articulations of Papua New Guinean identity through Instagram by analysing two public Papua New Guinean Instagram accounts, @archiveples and @taniabphoto. The research triangulates between Pacific, Indigenous, and Cultural studies, drawing on articulation theory and a multimodal thematic and visual cultural studies analysis. A Melanesian tok stori (storytelling) framework reveals how social media interactions fit within a culturally relevant Melanesian concept of storytelling and illustrates how social media has become a contemporary site for Pacific digital storytelling. This digital tok stori is a decolonsing digital wave of the Pacific artistic renaissance and reimagining emerging in 1970s post-independence art and literature. This research demonstrates how Papua New Guineans are subversively harnessing the tools and affordances of social media to counter reductive colonial narratives and mass media representations of Papua New Guineans. Background: 60% of women in Papua New Guinea (PNG) give birth unsupervised and outside of a health facility, contributing to high national maternal and perinatal mortality rates. We evaluated a practical, hospital-based on-the-job training program implemented by local health authorities in PNG between 2013 and 2019 aimed at addressing this challenge by upskilling community health workers (CHWs) to provide quality maternal and newborn care in rural health facilities. Methods: Two provinces, the Eastern Highlands and Simbu Provinces, were included in the study. In the Eastern Highlands Province, a baseline and end point skills assessment and post-training interviews 12 months after completion of the 2018 training were used to evaluate impacts on CHW knowledge, skills, and self-reported satisfaction with training. Quality and timeliness of referrals was assessed through data from the Eastern Highlands Province referral hospital registers. In Simbu Province, impacts of training on facility births, stillbirths and referrals were evaluated pre- and post-training retrospectively using routine health facility reporting data from 2012 to 2019, and negative binomial regression analysis adjusted for potential confounders and correlation of outcomes within facilities. Results: The average knowledge score increased significantly, from 69.8% (95% CI:66.3-73.2%) at baseline, to 87.8% (95% CI:82.9-92.6%) following training for the 8 CHWs participating in Eastern Highlands Province training. CHWs reported increased confidence in their skills and ability to use referral networks. There were significant increases in referrals to the Eastern Highlands provincial hospital arriving in the second stage of labour but no significant difference in the 5 min Apgar score for children, pre and post training. Data on 11,345 births in participating facilities in Simbu Province showed that the number of births in participating rural health facilities more than doubled compared to prior to training, with the impact increasing over time after training (0–12 months after training: IRR 1.59, 95% CI: 1.04–2.44, p-value 0.033, > 12 months after training: IRR 2.46, 95% CI:1.37–4.41, p-value 0.003). There was no significant change in stillbirth or referral rates. Conclusions: Our findings showed positive impacts of the upskilling program on CHW knowledge and practice of participants, facility births rates, and appropriateness of referrals, demonstrating its promise as a feasible intervention to improve uptake of maternal and newborn care services in rural and remote, low-resource settings within the resourcing available to local authorities. The Arafura and Timor Seas (ATS) comprise both near pristine and highly threatened marine ecosystems. There are four littoral nations (Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Australia, and Papua New Guinea), which have independently established Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). We design the first resilient MPA network for the entire region to protect critical habitats and species by considering transboundary features (i.e., connectivity of fisheries, rare, threatened, and protected species), uses and threats (i.e., fishing and climate change). We used Geographic Information System processing to identify gaps in the regional network based on existing and proposed MPAs and Areas of Interest (AOIs: previously identified as potential new MPAs) in each country, followed by systematic conservation planning to identify new AOIs for establishing MPAs to fill these gaps. The ATS MPA Network design (301,055 km2) has been endorsed by all four countries and includes all 93 existing (265,405 km2) and proposed (6,264 km2) MPAs, 13 previously identified AOIs (14,773 km2), and seven new AOIs identified in this study (14,613 km2). Of the new AOIs, three have been incorporated in Indonesia's national MPA network plan, one is in a new MPA currently being developed in Timor-Leste, and Australia is considering two as potential areas for new MPAs. Background: Microbes play vital roles across coral reefs both in the environment and inside and upon macrobes (holobionts), where they support critical functions such as nutrition and immune system modulation. These roles highlight the potential ecosystem-level importance of microbes, yet most knowledge of microbial functions on reefs is derived from a small set of holobionts such as corals and sponges. Declining seawater pH — an important global coral reef stressor — can cause ecosystem-level change on coral reefs, providing an opportunity to study the role of microbes at this scale. We use an in situ experimental approach to test the hypothesis that under such ocean acidification (OA), known shifts among macrobe trophic and functional groups may drive a general ecosystem-level response extending across macrobes and microbes, leading to reduced distinctness between the benthic holobiont community microbiome and the environmental microbiome. Results: We test this hypothesis using genetic and chemical data from benthic coral reef community holobionts sampled across a pH gradient from CO2 seeps in Papua New Guinea. We find support for our hypothesis; under OA, the microbiome and metabolome of the benthic holobiont community become less compositionally distinct from the sediment microbiome and metabolome, suggesting that benthic macrobe communities are colonised by environmental microbes to a higher degree under OA conditions. We also find a simplification and homogenisation of the benthic photosynthetic community, and an increased abundance of fleshy macroalgae, consistent with previously observed reef microbialisation. Conclusions: We demonstrate a novel structural shift in coral reefs involving macrobes and microbes: that the microbiome of the benthic holobiont community becomes less distinct from the sediment microbiome under OA. Papua New Guinea confronts unique and complex challenges with national reform policies promoting the increase of children with a disability enrolling in mainstream schools. Despite these policies being introduced in the last two decades, the translation to practice has been slow. In order to equip teachers with the necessary skills, knowledge and dispositions to implement inclusive education in Papua New Guinea, there is a pressing need to identify and understand the challenges teacher-educators experience. Data collected as part of an Australian-funded Fellowship, from ten Papua New Guinea education leaders, elucidate the perceived challenges associated with teacher-training for inclusive education. Content analysis of the participants' reflections revealed insights into how and what pedagogical and curriculum transformations in teacher education training courses could improve inclusive education practices in Papua New Guinean schools. These findings enhance agency for the education leaders to promote positive change so that Papua New Guinea can further its implementation of inclusive education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human fishery observers play an important role in monitoring fish stocks, providing scientific data upon which management organizations set applicable fishing limits and quotas to maintain sustainable populations. At-sea observers, however, sometimes sustain harassment from crews that object to being monitored, and at least one observer has disappeared or died under suspicious circumstances while underway every year since 2009. This exploratory paper examines inherent vulnerabilities within the monitoring, control, and surveillance (MCS) framework that nations and regional fisheries management organizations (RFMO) have adopted to support sustainable fish stocks. As rational actors, perpetrators of observer harassment, assault, and murder likely do so to manipulate observers' monitoring role in the MCS framework to conceal illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and other criminal activities. Qualitative analysis of reporting on observer harassment and suspicious disappearances over the past 15 years indicates the following institutional, situational, jurisdictional, and physical conditions appear to contribute to observer safety issues—privatization of fishery observer programs, crime convergence on fishing vessels, conflicting maritime jurisdictional considerations, and harsh conditions endemic to the remote maritime environment. While recorded suspicious observer deaths are too few to draw general conclusions, most occurrences befell observers working for tuna RFMOs in the Pacific Ocean, and a disproportionate number of deaths were observers from Kiribati and Papua New Guinea. Alternative surveillance approaches such as Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) produce limited results without human observers. Future policies that could contribute to observer safety include applying lessons learned from international efforts to address maritime transnational organized crime and providing observers personal communications and safety equipment to directly connect with search and rescue entities if under duress. • Human fishery observers frequently sustain harassment and physical threats. • Remote nature of their work allows criminal fishing crews to coerce observers. • At least one observer has died under suspicious circumstances every year since 2009. • Manipulated fish stock estimates could lead to poor predictions for fishing quotas. • Alternative surveillance approaches produce limited results without human observers. Five new species of Terebellides are described from coastal and deep waters of Papua New Guinea, using both morphology and molecular tools (for four species). Terebellides elenae n. sp. is characterized by the absence of both a glandular lateral region on TC3 and papillae on margins of the branchial lamellae and by the presence of partially fused branchial lobes with conspicuous fifth lobe and dorsal rounded projections until TC6. Terebellides fauchaldi n. sp. has a very large glandular lateral region on the third thoracic chaetiger (TC3), a fifth branchial lobe and partially fused branchial lobes, and conspicuous dorsal rounded projections on TC2-6. Terebellides madeep n. sp. is characterized by a thin glandular region on TC3 and by four free branchial lobes. Terebellides oculata n. sp. is one of the only two species in the world to have eyespots. Finally, T. papillosa n. sp. has geniculate chaetae on TC6 and TC7 and bears a large number of papillae. A majority-rule consensus tree using the 16S gene and an identification key for all Terebellides species described from the Central Indo-Pacific region are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Implementation of long‐lasting insecticide‐treated net (LLIN) programs to control human malaria transmission leads to substantial reductions in the abundance of Anopheles mosquitoes, but the impact on the population genetic structure of the malaria vectors is poorly known, nor has it been investigated in Papua New Guinea, where malaria is highly endemic and where several species of Anopheles have vector roles. Here, we applied Wright's F‐statistic, analysis of molecular variance, Bayesian structure analysis, and discriminant analysis of principle components to microsatellite genotype data to analyze the population genetic structure of Anopheles farauti between and within the northern and southern lowland plains and of Anopheles punctulatus within the northern plain of Papua New Guinea after such a program. Bottleneck effects in the two malaria vectors were analyzed using Luikart and Cornuet's tests of heterozygosity. A large, panmictic population of An. punctulatus pre‐LLIN program diverged into two subregional populations corresponding to Madang and East Sepik provinces post‐LLIN distribution and experienced a genetic bottleneck during this process. By contrast, the An. farauti population existed as two regional populations isolated by mountain ranges pre‐LLIN, a genetic structure that persisted after the distribution of LLINs with no further geographic differentiation nor evidence of a genetic bottleneck. The majority of multi-cellular terrestrial life is found in tropical forests and is either an invertebrate or a plant: for decades ecologists have sought to understand why. As global change erodes the list of extant species on our planet quantifying what species remain, along with their origins and ecology, contributes to our ability to preserve ecosystem functioning and resilience. Here we study three feeding guilds of caterpillars (Lepidoptera) and seek to understand the drivers of their diet breadth across four diverse tropical plant genera in Papua New Guinea. Host specificity is central to biodiversity estimates and the resilience of ecological networks. Specifically, we calculate distance-based host specificity in relation to plant phylogenetic relationships alongside chemical and mechanical traits of leaves. In terms of chemical defenses, we focus on the major polyphenol groups, a compound class shared across many plant species. We refine our data exploration using food webs and ordinations to pick out specific traits of relevance to insect host specificity. Our results showed that the degree of specialization for caterpillars took the following order: phylogenetic>polyphenol>mechanical, such that insect specificity was explained best by host phylogeny and polyphenol chemistry in our study system. Leaf mining insects had higher host specificity than those feeding externally. Of the traits studied hexahydroxydiphenoyl derivatives, galloyl derivatives, trichome density, quinic acid derivatives, myricetins and successional index explained the most variation in overall insect community structure. Our findings build on earlier studies of New Guinean rainforest communities and add a mechanistic explanation to previous findings that host genera are functional islands for insect herbivores. Further, we demonstrate that different plant genera combine different defensive traits that appear to drive associated insect diversity. Our approach integrates trait data and phylogeny to explore dimensions of specialization and we welcome metabolomic studies that will provide more detailed explanations for insect-herbivore host use. Finally, chemical diversity is directly linked to organismal diversity and by studying a range of insect herbivore guilds we make a connection between feeding ecology and specialization that will help to predict species interactions and, potentially, the persistence of ecological networks. Climate change might catalyze and exacerbate the trend of outmigration from low-lying atoll islands. There is speculation that migration away from atolls may not stop until such islands are abandoned. Yet migration creates both opportunities and risks for the sustainability of atoll communities. There is a trade-off between reduced demographic pressure on increasingly fragile atoll island environments and the financial and human resources necessary to adapt to climate change that can result from migration. Here we propose and analyze belonging as the centripetal force that makes migration a process that enhances the sustainability of atoll populations. We examine the relationship between migration, belonging, and the sustainability of populations on atoll islands based on data collected in three atoll islands in the Pacific: the island state of Niue; Namdrik Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands; and Budibudi atoll (Laughlan Islands) in Papua New Guinea. In each case, belonging binds the people who live in and migrate from these places into a collective commitment to their continuity, yet it does so to different degrees according to the economic opportunities available to migrants and the infrastructure that enables extended communities to remain connected. Specimens of squat lobsters belonging to the family Munididae Ahyong et al., 2010, representing the genera Garymunida Macpherson & Baba, 2022, Trapezionida Macpherson & Baba, 2022 and Typhlonida Macpherson & Baba, 2022, were collected during several cruises around New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea, Southwest Pacific. The integrative study of these specimens revealed the presence of one new species in Garymunida, five in Trapezionida and one in Typhlonida. We describe and illustrate these new species, providing some new data on the taxonomy of several rare or scarcely studied species of Trapezionida. Molecular data from different markers (mitochondrial and nuclear) was also included, based on data availability, to support the taxonomic status of different species. The health risks associated with the consumption of staples cultivated in the subsistence food gardens along the Watut River were investigated in Papua New Guinea. Twenty soil samples and twenty-nine samples of staple foods (including banana, taro, sweet potato, and Singapore taro) were collected from the food gardens following a three-day dietary recall survey. The concentration of metals (Cr, Cu, Pb, and Ni) was analyzed in the soil and food samples using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrophotometer. The descending order of mean metal concentration in the food garden soils is as follows: Cr > Cu > Ni > Pb. The concentration of Pb in all samples and Cr in 97% of staple foods exceeded the FAO/WHO permissible limits. Approximately 87% of adult consumers of bananas (Musa sp) were found to have estimated Cr and Pb ingestion levels exceeding the permissible daily tolerable intake of metals (0.2 and 0.21 mg day -1 , respectively). Hazard index values from the staples analysis indicate that the consumption of bananas (9.40) poses the highest risk of non-carcinogenic effects on adults, followed by taro (7.32), sweet potato (6.13), and Singapore taro (4.30). The consumption of taro is dangerous due to cancer risk associated with the intake of excessive Ni (2.88E-02) and Cr (8.82E-03) in adults and children compared to banana, sweet potato, and Singapore taro. Non-carcinogenic hazards of metal ingestion were found to be pronounced in the younger population, while carcinogenic effects were more serious in adults. Objectives: Adolescents make up an estimated 22 % of the 11.8 million population of Papua New Guinea (PNG), yet, as in many low and middle income countries, there are limited specific services for adolescents, who in traditional health service design fall between paediatric and adult patients. With more survivors of chronic illnesses, including tuberculosis and HIV, congenital and acquired heart disease, epilepsy and cerebral palsy, diabetes, cancer and other chronic conditions, there are gaps in the care of such young people, and in their eventual transition to adult services. Moreover, traditional health service design rarely addresses many adolescent health concerns - mental health, self-esteem, substance use, and adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health. This study, amongst a cohort cared for in a provincial hospital in Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea, aimed to explore the perceptions of adolescents on the health care they receive, and their views on their health priorities., Methods: A qualitative study was carried out from April to August 2022, amongst adolescents (persons aged 10-19 years) attending or admitted to Alotau Provincial Hospital. Data were collected via semi-structured wide-ranging interviews, and contextual data obtained from their medical charts. Thematic data analysis was done., Results: Fifty-four adolescents were interviewed. Adolescents were generally content with the care they received, although many raised concerns regarding feeling out of place in a ward with older adults or infants, and staff attitudes towards them including not directly communicating. Forty four adolescents preferred an adolescent-friendly setting, as opposed to the adult or children's wards, stating that it would allow for positive peer-interaction, improve their experience in the hospital, and improve the quality of health care received. Many adolescents with chronic illnesses had concerns regarding loneliness and isolation, and uncertainty of their future. Pregnant adolescents highlighted the lack of education on sexual and reproductive health, and experiences of gender-based violence., Conclusions: This study shows that adolescents can perceive the need for adolescent-friendly health services and advocate for improvement in the quality of health care they receive, and the breadth of adolescent health care concerns., (© 2024 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.)

The etiological agent of yaws is the spirochete Treponema pallidum (TP) subsp. pertenue (TPE) and infects the children of Papua New Guinea, causing ulcerative skin lesions that impairs normal growth and development. Closely related strains of Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue, J E 11, and T E 13 were detected in an ulcer biospecimen derived from a 5-year-old yaws patient. Cloning experiments validated the presence of two distinct but similar genotypes, namely T E 13 and J E 11, co-occurring within a single host. While coinfection with highly related TPE strains has only limited epidemiological and clinical relevance, this is the first documented coinfection with genetically distinct TP strains in a single patient. There is a rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Papua New Guinea (PNG), adding to the disease burden from communicable infectious diseases and thus increasing the burden on the healthcare system in a low-resource setting. The aim of this review was to identify health and nutrition promotion programs conducted in PNG and the enablers and barriers to these programs. Four electronic databases and grey literature were searched. Two reviewers completed screening and data extraction. This review included 23 papers evaluating 22 health and nutrition promotion programs, which focused on the Ottawa Charter action areas of developing personal skills (12 programs), reorienting health services (12 programs) and strengthening community action (6 programs). Nineteen programs targeted communicable diseases; two addressed NCDs, and one addressed health services. Enablers of health promotion programs in PNG included community involvement, cultural appropriateness, strong leadership, and the use of mobile health technologies for the decentralisation of health services. Barriers included limited resources and funding and a lack of central leadership to drive ongoing implementation. There is an urgent need for health and nutrition promotion programs targeting NCDs and their modifiable risk factors, as well as longitudinal study designs for the evaluation of long-term impact and program sustainability.

The self-collection of vaginal swabs and point-of-care testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is reported from several low-and middle-income countries. However, the reporting on women's experiences of self-collection and same-day testing and treatment of STIs is less well described. In this paper, we present the acceptability of self-collected vaginal swabs and point-of-care testing and treatment among pregnant women enrolled in a clinical trial (Women and Newborn Trial of Antenatal Intervention and Management - WANTAIM) in Papua New Guinea. Semi-structured interviews were conducted among 54 women enrolled into WANTAIM to identify the acceptability of the test and treat approach. Analysis of qualitative data used deductive and inductive thematic analysis applying Sekhon, Cartwright and Francis' acceptability theoretical framework. Most women reported that they understood that the vaginal swab was to identify infections that may affect their unborn baby; however, some were unsure about the specific infections they were being tested for. Among women who tested positive for an STI, some were unsure what they had been treated for. Overall, the self-collection of vaginal swabs for STI testing during pregnancy was highly acceptable.
