The demand for high-quality graphene for electronic applications is increasing due to its high carrier mobility and electrical conductivity. In this connection, printing technology is a reliable method towards the fabrication of conductive, disposable graphene-based electrode for low-cost sensor application. Herein, we aimed to report the synthesis of high-quality graphene nanosheets obtained by electrochemical exfoliation of biomass-derived from corn cob. The conductive ink was prepared from this exfoliated graphene and was utilized for the preparation of paper-based graphene electrode towards double stranded DNA (dsDNA) sensor application. This paper, based graphene electrode opens the possibility of direct electrochemical analysis of analyte without any sample preparation. In this study, two irreversible oxide peaks were obtained from paper-based printed graphene electrode, corresponds to oxidation of guanine (G) and adenine (A) of dsDNA in the linear range of 0.2 pg mL−1 to 5 pg mL−1 with the detection limit of 0.68 pg mL−1 and the sensitivity of 0.00656 mA pg−1 cm−2. The current study analyzed the high heating values (HHVs) of various waste biomass materials intending to the effective management and more sustainable consumption of waste as clean energy source. Various biomass waste samples including date leaves, date branches, coconut leaves, grass, cooked macaroni, salad, fruit and vegetable peels, vegetable scraps, cooked food waste, paper waste, tea waste, and cardboard were characterized for proximate analysis. The results revealed that all the waste biomass were rich in organic matter (OM). The total OM for all waste biomass ranged from 79.39% to 98.17%. Likewise, the results showed that all the waste biomass resulted in lower ash content and high fixed carbon content associated with high fuel quality. Based on proximate analysis, various empirical equations (HHV=28.296-0.2887(A)-656.2/VM, HHV=18.297-0.4128(A)+35.8/FC and HHV=22.3418-0.1136(FC)-0.3983(A)) have been tested to predict HHVs. It was observed that the heterogeneous nature of various biomass waste considerably affects the HHVs and hence has different fuel characteristics. Similarly, the HHVs of waste biomass were also determined experimentally using the bomb calorimeter, and it was observed that among all the selected waste biomass, the highest HHVs (21.19 MJ kg−1) resulted in cooked food waste followed by cooked macaroni (20.25 MJ kg−1). The comparison revealed that experimental HHVs for the selected waste biomass were slightly deviated from the predicted HHVs. Based on HHVs, various thermochemical and biochemical technologies were critically overviewed to assess the suitability of waste biomass to energy products. It has been emphasized that valorizing waste-to-energy technologies provides the dual benefits of sustainable management and production of cleaner energy to reduce fossil fuels dependency. However, the key bottleneck in commercializing waste-to-energy systems requires proper waste collection, sorting, and continuous feedstock supply. Glucose, as one of the most familiar biomass, can be utilized to produce hydrogen and fine chemicals. This work reports the renewable hydrogen production from glucose over Au/CdS-nanorods (Au/CdS-NRs) photocatalyst. For Au/CdS-NRs catalyst, it shows a superior H 2 evolution rate of 90.0 ​μmol ​g−1 ​h−1 under visible light irradiation. Moreover, the H 2 generation from the glucose solution on Au/CdS-NRs prepared by twice solvothermal method is much higher than Au colloid and photoreduction methods. Prepared with twice solvothermal method, Au nanoparticles are obtained from Au3+ ions on the CdS surface, as Au3+ can be reduced by photogenerated electrons. The separated hole can oxidize glucose to produce protons, and protons can be reduced by photogenerated electrons into H 2. Meanwhile, the Au/CdS-NRs can also be used to produce H 2 from other biomasses, for instance sucrose, soluble starch, celluflor, pectin and waste paper scraps. The probable mechanism is proposed and discussed in the photocatalytic process from glucose reforming. This work indicates that the process of self-reducing Au3+ to Au can drastically increase the photocatalytic efficiency of H 2 evolution from biomass, by promoting the separation and transportation of photogenerated charge carriers. Abstract Marine sources especially crustaceans have been extensively used worldwide for the production of chitosan. However, limited availability as well as variations in the properties of the derived chitosan is a serious drawback of utilizing marine sources for chitosan production. This study investigated sustainable and green approach of fungal chitosan production using paper mill wastewater as a cheap and easily available substrate. The fungus Penicillium citrinum IITG_KP1 used in this study was initially isolated from an infected bamboo shoot. Addition of acetic acid at low levels led to a 150% increase in the yield of chitosan from 95 g/kg to 138 g/kg of dry fungal biomass. This result correlated well with an increase in xylose uptake rate due to acetic acid addition that was confirmed by enhanced activity of xylose reductase (XR) and xylitol dehydrogenase (XDH) enzymes in the presence of acetic acid. Very high COD removal efficiency (75%) along with 70% phenolic reduction and 84% decolourization efficiency of the raw paper mill wastewater without any prior pre-treatment was further achieved by carrying out the fungal fermentation using a bioreactor under batch mode of operation. The fungal chitosan showed properties comparable with those of a commercially available standard. On the international level, it is common to act on reducing emissions from energy systems. However, in addition to industrial emissions, low-stack emissions also make a significant contribution. A good step in reducing its environmental impact, is to move to biofuels, including biomass. This paper examines the impact of placing a catalytic system in a retort boiler to minimize emissions of greenhouse gases, dust and other pollutants when burning pellets. The effect of platinum, and oxides of selected metals placed on the deflector as a solid catalyst was studied. Based on the experimental data, a branched artificial neural network was constructed and trained. The routing of three parallel topologies made it possible to achieve high accuracy while keeping the input data relatively simple. The system showed an average error of 3.54% against arbitrary test data. On the basis of experimental data as well as predictions returned by the artificial neural network, recommendations were shown for the catalysts used and their amounts. Depending on the biomass from which the pellet was produced, the experiment suggested the use of titanium or copper oxides. In the case of the neural network, it was able to select a better system, based on platinum, improving emission reductions by up to more than 19%, depending on the type of pellet used. Both alloying effects and metal-carrier interactions affected the electronic structure of Ni and Co. The formation of Ni-Co alloys was promoted by adjusting the appropriate metal ratios, which reduced the electron cloud density of Ni species and promoted metal–metal interactions. Hydrochar is a carbonaceous material that is generated through the process of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) from biomass, which has garnered considerable attention in recent years owing to its potential applications in a diverse range of fields, such as environmental remediation and agriculture. Hydrochar is produced from a diverse range of biomass waste materials and retains exceptional properties, including high carbon content, stability, and surface area, making it an optimal candidate for various enviro-agricultural applications. Moreover, it delves into the production process of hydrochar, with explicit emphasis on the optimization of certain properties during the production of hydrochar from bio-waste. Furthermore, the potential of hydrochar as an adsorbent and catalyst support for heavy metals and dyes was extensively explored, along with a soil remediation potential that can improve the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil. This comprehensive review aims to provide a thorough overview of hydrochar with a particular focus on its production, properties, and prospective applications. The significance of hydrochar is accentuated and the growing need for alternative sources of energy and materials that are environmentally sustainable is highlighted in this paper. The porous carbon with angstrom-sized pores is important in supercapacitor applications, because of its high pack density and high specific capacitance. In this paper, a facile method is proposed for the preparation of hierarchical porous carbon with high-volume angstrom-sized pores. Onion, as the typical biomass in this research, is used as carbon precursor. First, onion was etched by KOH to obtain a water-soluble lignin-potassium-salt/cellulose composite. This composite was further pyrolyzed under N 2 atmosphere to obtain onion derived porous carbon (OPC). The morphology and porous structure of OPC were characterized by scanning electron microscope and N 2 adsorption/desorption. The supercapacitive performances of OPC were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and galvanostatic charge-discharge. OPC shows high specific surface area with high-volume angstrom-sized pores in carbon matrix. When used as supercapacitor electrode materials, OPC shows high specific capacitance and good cycling stability. This paper opens a general way to prepare porous carbon from biomasses, which will promote the development of biomass utilization, preparation of porous carbon and supercapacitors. Ventilation air methane (VAM), which is the main source of greenhouse gas emissions from coal mines, has been a great challenge to deal with due to its huge flow rates and dilute methane levels (typically 0.3–1.0 vol%) with almost 100% humidity. As part of our continuous endeavor to further improve the methane adsorption capacity of carbon composites, this paper presents new carbon composites derived from macadamia nut shells (MNSs) and incorporated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). These new carbon composites were fabricated in a honeycomb monolithic structure to tolerate dusty environment and to minimize pressure drop. This paper demonstrates the importance of biomass particle size distributions when formed in a composite and methane adsorption capacities at low pressures relevant to VAM levels. The selectivity of methane over nitrogen was about 10.4 at each relevant partial pressure, which was much greater than that (6.5) obtained conventionally (at very low pressures), suggesting that capturing methane in the presence of pre-adsorbed nitrogen would be a practical option. The equilibrium and dynamic performance of biomass-derived carbon composites were enhanced by 30 and 84%, respectively, compared to those of our previous carbon fiber composites. In addition, the presence of moisture in ventilation air resulted in a negligible effect on the dynamic VAM capture performance of the carbon composites, suggesting that our carbon composites have a great potential for site applications at coal mines because the cost and performance of solid adsorbents are critical factors to consider. This paper presents a techno-economic analysis (TEA) of six (6) scenarios of the kraft lignin catalytic (CFP) and thermal (TFP) fast pyrolysis towards the production of high value-added chemicals (HVACs) and electric energy, based on experimental data from our previous work. ASPEN PLUS was used to simulate the proposed plants/scenarios and retrofitted custom-based economic models that were developed in Microsoft EXCEL. The results showed that scenarios 1 and 2 in which the produced bio-oil is used as fuel for electricity production are the most cost-deficient. On the other hand, scenarios 3 and 6 that utilize the light bio-oil fraction to recover distinct HVACs, along with the use of heavier fractions for electricity production, have showed a significant investment viability, since profitability measures are high. Furthermore, scenarios 4 and 5 that refer to the recovery of mixtures (fractions) of HVACs, are considered an intermediate investment option due to the reduced cost of separation. All the proposed scenarios have a substantial total capital investment (TCI) which ranges from 135 MM€ (scenario 4) to 380 MM€ (scenario 6) with a Lang factor of 6.08, which shows that the CAPEX results are within reason. As far as the comparison of lignin CFP and TFP goes, it is shown that lignin CFP leads to the production of aromatic and phenolic monomers which have a substantial market value, while TFP can lead to important value-added chemicals with a lower OPEX than CFP. A target of return of investment (ROI) of 32% has been set for the selling prices of the HVACs. In summary, this study aims at listing and assessing a set of economic indicators for industrial size plants that use lignin CFP and TFP towards the production of high value-added chemicals and energy production and to provide simulation data for comparative analysis of three bio-oil separation methods, i.e. distillation, liquid-liquid extraction and moving bed chromatography. Understanding how studies have been carried out in the region helps to understand the Amazon rainforest potential in mitigating climate change. In addition, evaluating scientific production is essential to verify the main methods and places researched. Thus, this study objective was to build an overview and identify the main gaps regarding research related to biomass and carbon stocks with the coverage limit of the Amazon rainforest. Therefore, an analysis of the publications indexed in the Scopus database was developed until 2020, performing a bibliometric analysis and a systematic and state-of-the-art review. Initially 2042 publications were obtained, of which 786 met the inclusion criteria. The first work indexed in the Scopus database related to the theme was published in 1982. Over time, it was possible to observe an increasing behavior in relation to the interest in the theme. Natural environments were the most researched and change in the land use and occupation of the Amazon Rainforest is still poorly evaluated. Brazil is the country with the highest number of studies, followed by Peru and Colombia. Guyana and Suriname appear as possible scientific gaps and potential environments to be studied. Studies preferentially explore the biomass carbon, with the soil being little evaluated when compared to the total amount of papers found. When observing only the biomass studies, the aboveground biomass is the most evaluated, while the roots and necromass are little studied. The main variables used in biomass equations were diameter at 1.3 m above ground and total tree height. The biomass to carbon conversion factor has been widely used, but it can generate unreliable results. It is recommended to carry out local assessments of the carbon content, especially using the dry combustion method, which generates less waste, with more precise results and shorter execution time of the analyses. The livestock industry accounts for a considerable proportion of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, and in response, the Australian red meat industry has committed to an aspirational target of net-zero emissions by 2030. Increasing soil carbon storage in grazing lands has been identified as one method to help achieve this, while also potentially improving production and provision of other ecosystem services. This review examined the effects of grazing management on soil carbon and factors that drive soil carbon sequestration in Australia. A systematic literature search and meta-analysis was used to compare effects of stocking intensity (stocking rate or utilisation) and stocking method (i.e, continuous, rotational or seasonal grazing systems) on soil organic carbon, pasture herbage mass, plant growth and ground cover. Impacts on below ground biomass, soil nitrogen and soil structure are also discussed. Overall, no significant impact of stocking intensity or method on soil carbon sequestration in Australia was found, although lower stocking intensity and incorporating periods of rest into grazing systems (rotational grazing) had positive effects on herbage mass and ground cover compared with higher stocking intensity or continuous grazing. Minimal impact of grazing management on pasture growth rate and below-ground biomass has been reported in Australia. However, these factors improved with grazing intensity or rotational grazing in some circumstances. While there is a lack of evidence in Australia that grazing management directly increases soil carbon, this meta-analysis indicated that grazing management practices have potential to benefit the drivers of soil carbon sequestration by increasing above and below-ground plant production, maintaining a higher residual biomass, and promoting productive perennial pasture species. Clean energy transition via utilizing biomass resources has been projected as an important climate change mitigation strategy. A vital characteristic of biomass is its localized nature; therefore, bioenergy utilization should follow decentralized planning. Agrarian countries like India can take benefit of its large agricultural biomass waste pool to produce clean renewable energy. However, prior knowledge of spatio-temporal distribution, competing uses, and biomass characteristics are necessary for successful bioenergy planning. This paper assesses biomass resource and its power generation potential at different agro-climatic zone levels in the state of Rajasthan, India considering crop residue biomass (25 different crop residues from 14 crops) and livestock manure (from cattle, buffalo, and poultry). Uncertainties associated with the availability of biomass and the power generation potential are assessed for each agro-climatic zone under different scenarios. Greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions from biomass-based power generations are also estimated and compared with biomass-equivalent coal power plants. It is observed that the annual biomass power potential of Rajasthan is 3056 MW (2496 MW from crop residues and 560 MW from livestock manure). Scenario analysis suggests that the potential varies from 2445 to 6045 MW under different biomass availability and power plant operating conditions. Annual GHGs emissions due to biomass power generation is 5053 kt CO 2 eq. Replacing coal-based power with biomass power would result in annual GHGs savings of 11412 kt CO 2 eq. The paper also discusses various carriers and barriers viz. logistics, institutional, financial and technical in setting up decentralized bioenergy plants. In this paper, we reported a one-step activation strategy to prepare highly graphitized N -doped porous carbon materials (KDC-FAC) derived from biomass, and adopted ferric ammonium citrate (FAC) as active agent. At high temperature, FAC was decomposed into Fe- and NH 3 -based materials, further increasing graphitization degree, introducing N -containing functional groups and forming porous structure. KDC-FAC has superior electrocatalytic activity and stability towards V2+/V3+ and VO2+/VO 2 + redox reactions. High graphitization degree can enhance the conductivity of carbon material, and porous structure is conducive to increase reaction area of vanadium redox couples. Moreover, N -containing functional groups are beneficial to improve the electrode wettability and serve as active sites. The single cell tests demonstrate that KDC-FAC modified cell exhibits good adaptability under high current density and superb stability in cycling test. Compared with pristine cell, the energy efficiency of KDC-FAC modified cell is increased by 9% at 150 mA cm−2. • Bimodal porous carbon with high specific surface area was synthesized. • BPC is beneficial to improve the electrochemical performance of Li-S battery. • The BPC/S cathode exhibits outstanding cyclic stability and rate performance. With the advantages of excellent theoretical specific capacity and specific energy, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is regarded as one of promising energy storage systems. However, poor conductivity and shuttle effect of intermediate electrochemical reaction products limit its application. As good sulfur carriers, porous carbon materials can effectively remit these shortcomings. In this paper, a combination of a hydrothermal KOH activation and successive pyrolysis of biomass reed flowers is proposed to prepare a bimodal porous carbon (BPC) material with high specific surface area (1712.6 m2 g−1). The as-obtained low-cost BPC/S cathodes exhibit excellent cycling performance (908 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C after 100 cycles), good rate capability and cyclability (663 mAh g−1 at 1 C after 1000 cycles), as well as a high areal capacity (6.6 mAh cm−2 at 0.1 C after 50 cycles with a sulfur loading of 8.3 mg cm−2). Such excellent electrochemical performance was mainly ascribed to a specific bimodal porous structure with high specific surface area and plenty spaces for sulfur impregnating, which significantly reduces the escape of polysulfides during cycling and guarantees a good cycling stability. Moreover, the secondary class pores (mesopores and micropores) of the material offer plenty of small channels to improve the electronic and ionic transfer rate and, consequently, to enhance the rate capability. The as-synthesized BPC material presents a great potential as a sulfur carrier material for Li-S battery applications. Various catalysts are being used in fuel production from biomass and polymeric waste for the obtention of an alternative energy source with both environmental friendliness and economic viability. Biochar, red mud bentonite, and calcium oxide have been shown to play a pertinent role as catalysts in waste-to-fuel conversion processes, such as transesterification and pyrolysis. In this line of thought, this paper has provided a compendium of the fabrication and modification technologies of bentonite, red mud calcium oxide, and biochar, together with their various performances in their application in the waste-to-fuel processes. Additionally, an overview of the structural and chemical attributes of these components is discussed regarding their efficiency. Ultimately, research trends and future points of focus are evaluated, and it is observed that techno-economic optimization of catalyst synthetic routes and investigation of new catalytic formulations, such as biochar and red mud-based nanocatalysts, are potential prospects. Pelagic Sargassum , usually found at the Sargasso Sea and the Western portion of the North Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, has been detected in many new locations through the tropical Atlantic. The huge biomass found from the African coast to the Caribbean was called the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt and is responsible for the stranding of tons of algae on coastal regions. Despite the environmental, social, and economic impacts, sargassum is a valuable source for multiple uses at the industry, such as alginates, cosmetics, recycled paper and bioplastics, fertilizers, and as raw material for civil construction. This work presents a systematic literature review on the use of algae at the civil construction sector, with a focus on the valorization of the pelagic Sargassum spp. biomass, by identifying the potential applications related to the use of other algal species. The review considered other genera of marine algae and marine angiosperms, resulting in a total of 31 selected articles. The marine grass Posidonia oceanica was the most used species, found in eight published papers, followed by the red alga Kappaphycus alvarezii with four studies. Two articles were available on the use of pelagic Sargassum spp. (S. fluitans and S.natans) for construction materials (adobe and pavement), with potential good results. The literature presented results from the use of marine algae and sea grasses for particleboards, polymeric and cemented composites, adobe, pavement, facades, and roofs. In this work, the aerobic biodegradability of the process water (PW) produced by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of dewatered anaerobic digested sludge and the toxicity assessment in regard to the heterotrophic activated biomass of a conventional activated sludge systems, are described. Such assessments are not yet reported in other scientific papers, so this paper seeks to contribute to the increase of knowledge regarding the valorization of the HTC process applied in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). For such purpose, two different respirometric techniques were applied - multi-OUR respirometry and manometric respirometry. PW resulted highly biodegradable: 83% of total COD was biodegradable, with a 58% of readily biodegradable (rbCOD) fraction. The BOD 5 /COD ratio was 0.42. Further, it was characterized by a high concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) (i.e. 2031 mg/L), of which the major constituent was acetic acid (i.e. 80%), an easily degradable intermediate of many biological processes. Both the respirometric techniques showed that the assessed PW, after being diluted accordingly with the WWTP real operational conditions, did not imply short-term toxic effects on the activated sludge, neither using fresh biomass nor keeping the same one. According to these results, the recirculation of PW at the water line of WWTPs represents a promising approach not affected by specific toxicity issues, especially when the HTC process is integrated into a WWTP scheme. Abstract Remediation of polluted soils using phytoremediation techniques is an effective strategy. However, the use of the biomass from these soils for energy purposes may raise efficiency and pollution emission problems and there is currently little research on this issue. In this work, the main results of a fluidized-bed gasification treatment conducted on poplar biomass pruning residues from a multi-contaminated area are presented. The samples were collected from an experimental site in which a plant-assisted bioremediation (PABR) technology has been applied since 2013 to reduce the soil heavy metal (HM) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contents. The main goal of this study was to identify the specific treatment necessary, in addition to conventional tar reforming, for trapping possible residues of HMs and PCBs in ashes during the gasification process. In our study, we demonstrate that gasification of contaminated biomass coming from PABR (where contaminant residues are concentrated mainly in the roots and are insignificant in the shoots) produces syngas whose characteristics are similar to those obtained using non-contaminated biomass. The results showed that contaminant concentrations in the prunings were negligible; the total amount of PCBs was 1.63 ng/g, while HMs ranged from 0.01 to 0.70 mg/kg, except for Cu and Zn (∼20 mg/kg). Furthermore, the presence in the biomass of Ca and traces of other metals showed a possible catalytic effect with an improvement in the tar conversion in the gasifier leading to a reduction of 5–10% in tar content. The overall results suggest that a specific treatment for pollutant capture is necessary only when the roots, the part of the plants where these contaminants are concentrated, are sampled and used for the gasification process. Although energy from biomass produced on a contaminated site is currently considered waste and involves disposal costs, this paper shows that the poplar biomass grown on a multi-contaminated soil can be used for energy purposes without any impact on the environment. Abstract Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) from the city of Boa Esperança, Minas Gerais, Brazil, was used to produce refuse-derived fuel (RDF). The MSW contains residues from human society, including product packaging, bottles, batteries, organic waste, fines, textiles, health textiles, plastics, glass, and metals, among others. The following protocol was performed during the conversion of MSW to RDF: (i) the raw MSW was placed in a silo and sent to a primary crusher using a metal conveyor belt, which reduced the particle size to 80 mm; (ii) the biomass was transferred to a selective waste collection platform by a rubber conveyor belt, and the recyclable waste, metals, and glasses were separated manually; (iii) residual metals were removed by a magnetic separator; (iv) the waste was transferred to a secondary crusher which reduced the particle size to 60 mm; (v) the waste passed through an airborne separator to remove materials with high density, such as glass, stones, and organic materials, using a metallic conveyor belt; (vi) the particle size was reduced to 40 mm by a tertiary crusher; (vii) the aluminium was separated from the non-metallic materials (plastic, paper, rubber, etc.) using an eddy current separator; (viii) the particle size was reduced to 25 mm using a quaternary crusher; (ix) the MSW was introduced into a rotary dryer using a metal conveyor belt, where the moisture content was reduced to close to 15 wt%, which required thermal energy equivalent to 186 kWh; (x) the RDF was used in a thermochemical reactor and 4148 kWh of thermal energy was produced. In addition, the MSW and RDF were analysed, and the elemental composition and combustion characteristics were determined. Based on these results, the protocol evaluated was found to be effective in the conversion of MSW to RDF, which can be used as a source of renewable fuel. Abstract Palm kernel shells (PKS), empty fruit bunches (EFB), and trunks are by-products of the palm oil industry and form approximately 50 wt % of fresh fruit bunch (FFB). In particular, EFB accounts for approximately 20 wt % of FFB. Although large amounts of EFB are generated from palm oil mills every year in Indonesia and Malaysia, EFB is treated as waste because commercial technologies for thermo-chemical conversion of EFB into renewable energy are still under development. A robust conversion method can transform EFB into an appealing renewable energy source. In order to secure this renewable energy source, Korea can import EFB as biomass. This paper investigates literature on the status of utilization of EFB, by-products from palm oil mills in order to identify the best available technological process to use EFB as bio-solid refuse fuels (SRF). Meanwhile, physico-chemical analyses (proximate, elemental, and calorific value analyses), biomass and heavy metal content were measured in order to assess whether EFB would be suitable for use as a bio-SRF, in accordance with the Korean quality standard for SRF. According to the analysis results, EFB showed applicability to use as bio-SRF; main analysis results - moisture (9.63 wt %), ash (5.94 wt %), biomass content (97.82 wt %) and calorific value (3668 kcal kg). Abstract The enhancement of gibberellin (GA) on the activity of anaerobic ammonium oxidation(anammox) bacteria in short-term batch experiments(500 mL serum bottle) was studied in this paper. To make sure the accuracy of the data, each experiment group was conducted some statistical analysis. The results showed that GA played an important role in improving anammox activity when the GA dosage ranged from 0.1 to 1.5 mg L−1, and the total nitrogen removal rate (NRR) was increased by 34% when the GA dosage was 1 mg L−1. The monitoring results of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and biomass of anammox bacteria indicated that GA addition improved the secretion of EPS and the biomass increasing, whose amount achieved maximum under the GA dose of 1 mg L−1. Compared to the control test, the maximum improvement ratio of the EPS and biomass was 28.6% and 34%, respectively. In addition, the cloning results also indicated that the anammox bacterial community structure shifted in species level of Candidatus Brocadia genus during the experiment, and the most dominant anammox bacteria were Candidatus Brocadia fulgid. The rising demand for feed and food has put an increasing pressure on agriculture, with agricultural intensification as a direct response. Notwithstanding the higher crop productivity, intensive agriculture management entails many adverse environmental impacts. Worldwide, soil organic carbon (SOC) decline is hereby considered as a main danger which affects soil fertility and productivity. The life cycle perspective helps to get a holistic overview when evaluating the environmental sustainability of agricultural systems, though the impact of farm management on soil quality aspects is often not integrated. In this paper, we introduce an indicator called Agricultural Biomass Productivity Benefit of SOC management (ABB_SOC), which, relying on natural resource consumption, enables to estimate the net effect of the efforts made to attain a better soil quality. Hereby the focus is put on SOC. First, we introduce a framework to describe the SOC trend due to farm management decisions. The extent to which remediation measures are required are used as a measure for the induced SOC losses. Next, ABB_SOC values are calculated as the balance between the natural resource consumption of the inputs (including remediation efforts) and the desired output of arable crop production systems. The models RothC and EU-Rotate_N are used to simulate the SOC evolution due to farm management and the response of the biomass productivity, respectively. The developed indicator is applied on several rotation systems in Flanders, comparing different remediation strategies. In this paper, a series of nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbons (NMCs) with three-dimensional (3D) interconnected mesopores have been prepared using flour as carbon source, dicyanamide as nitrogen source and colloidal silica as hard template. The optimized material (NMC-4) prepared with the colloidal silica/flour mass ratio of 4 has a high nitrogen doping level of 5.69 at.% and large specific surface area of 995 m 2  g −1 as well as 3D interconnected mesopores (12.9 nm). As the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst among various NMCs, NMC-4 exhibits the superior performance and much better stability and methanol crossover with a four-electron dominant reaction pathway compared to commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. Furthermore, as a supercapacitor (SC) electrode material, NMC-4 exhibits a high specific capacitance of 178.5 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 and long cycle life (94.5% capacity retention after 5000 cycles). It also shows a good rate capacity as 76.1% of original specific capacitance remains when the current density increases from 0.5 to 20 A g −1 . The high-performance of NMCs results from the synergetic effects of 3D interconnected mesopores, large surface area, and high N-doping level, enabling fast mass transport and electron transfer during the electrochemical process. This work provides a facile and efficient strategy to heteroatom-doped carbons from extensively available biomass, showing great potentials in electrocatalysis, energy storage, and other applications. Mango stone is an interesting biomass by-product with a considerable net calorific value. Mango production has significantly risen in the last few years, meaning that mango waste has increased as well. However, mango stone has a moisture content of about 60% (wet basis) and it is very important to dry the samples for using them in electrical and thermal energy production. In this paper, the main parameters involved in the mass transfer during drying are determined. Drying was carried out in a convective dryer through a set of experiments based on five drying air temperatures (100 °C, 125 °C, 150 °C, 175 °C and 200 °C) and three air velocities (1 m/s, 2 m/s and 3 m/s). Drying times ranged between 2 and 23 h. The drying rate was calculated from the Gaussian model whose values ranged from 1.5·10−6 to 6.3·10−4 s−1. Effective diffusivity was obtained as an overall parameter in the mass diffusion for each test. These values were found between 0.71·10−9 and 13.6·10−9 m2/s. The activation energy was calculated from the Arrhenius law for each test, made at different air velocities. These values were 36.7, 32.2 and 32.1 kJ/mol for 1, 2 and 3 m/s, respectively. Microalgae biomass (MB) is a promising source of renewable energy, especially when the cultivation is associated with wastewater treatment. However, microalgae wastewater technologies still have much to improve. Additionally, microalgae biomass valorization routes need to be optimized to be a sustainable and feasible source of green bioenergy. Thus, this paper aimed to evaluate the environmental impacts of the production of briquettes from MB, cultivated during domestic wastewater treatment. Also, it was evaluated how much the drying of the MB affected the life cycle and the environment. Improvements in the life cycle to mitigate the environmental impacts of this energy route were proposed. Cradle-to-gate modeling was applied to obtain a life cycle assessment (LCA) from cultivation to the valorization of MB, through its transformation into a solid biofuel. With LCA, it was possible to identify which technical aspect of the process needs to be optimized so that environmental sustainability can be achieved. Two scenarios were compared, one with the microalgae growth in a high-rate algal pond (HRAP) (scenario 1) and the other in a hybrid reactor, formed by a HRAP and a biofilm reactor (BR) (scenario 2). LCA highlighted the electric power mix, representing, on average, 60% of the total environmental impacts in both scenarios. The valorization of MB in briquettes needs to consume less energy to offset its yield. The environment suffered pressure in freshwater eutrophication, due to the release of 3.1E-05 and 3.9E-05 kg of phosphorus equivalent; in fossil resources scarcity, with the extraction of 1.4E-02 and 4.5E-02 kg of oil equivalent; and in climate change, by the emission of 1.0E-01 and 1.9E-01 kg of carbon dioxide (CO 2) equivalent, in scenarios 1 and 2, respectively. Scenario 1 was highly damaging to terrestrial ecotoxicity, with the release of 3.5E-01 kg of 1,4 Dichlorobenzene, coming from the CO 2 used in MB growth. This category was the one that most negatively pressured the environment, differing from scenario 2, in which this input was not required. This was the only impact category in which scenario 2 had a better environmental performance when compared to scenario 1. Cotton, required in scenario 2, represented up to 87% of emissions in some of the evaluated categories. Despite the impacts that occurred in the two modeled scenarios, the environmental gains due to the use of wastewater for microalgae growth, replacing the synthetic cultivation medium, stood out. In the sensitivity analysis, two alternative scenarios were proposed: (i) electricity consumption for drying has been reduced, due to the natural decrease of MB humidity, and (ii) MB briquettes were considered a substitute for coal briquettes. Results indicated that pressures on climate change and fossil resource scarcity were eliminated in both scenarios and this also occurred for freshwater eutrophication in scenario 2. This paper contributes to the improvement and development of converting MB routes into more sustainable products, causing less pressure on the environment. Also, the study contributes to filling a gap in the literature, discussing methods and technologies to be improved, and consequently making microalgae biotechnology environmentally feasible and a potential renewable energy alternative. Biomass combustion under the oxy-fuel conditions (Oxy-biomass combustion) is one of the approaches achieving negative CO 2 emissions. KCl, K 2 CO 3 and K 2 SO 4 , as the major potassium species in biomass ash, can catalytically affect biomass combustion. In this paper, the catalysis of the representative potassium salts on oxy-biomass combustion was studied using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). Effects of potassium salt types (KCl, K 2 CO 3 and K 2 SO 4 ), loading concentrations (0, 1, 3, 5, 8 wt%), replacing N 2 by CO 2 , and O 2 concentrations (5, 20, 30 vol%) on the catalysis degree were discussed. The comparison between TG-DTG curves of biomass combustion before and after water washing in both the 20%O 2 /80%N 2 and 20%O 2 /80%CO 2 atmospheres indicates that the water-soluble minerals in biomass play a role in promoting the devolatilization and accelerating the char-oxidation; and the replacement of N 2 by CO 2 inhibits the devolatilization and char-oxidation processes during oxy-biomass combustion. In the devolatilization stage, the catalysis degree of potassium monotonously increases with the increase of potassium salt loaded concentration. The catalysis degree order of the studied potassium salts is K 2 CO 3  > KCl > K 2 SO 4 . In the char-oxidation stage, with the increase of loading concentration the three kinds of potassium salts present inconsistent change tendencies of the catalysis degree. In the studied loading concentrations from 0 to 8 wt%, there is an optimal loading concentration for KCl and K 2 CO 3 , at 3 and 5 wt%, respectively; while for K 2 SO 4 , the catalysis degree on char-oxidation monotonically increases with the loading potassium concentration. For most studied conditions, regardless of the potassium salt types or the loading concentrations or the combustion stages, the catalysis degree in the O 2 /CO 2 atmosphere is stronger than that in the O 2 /N 2 atmosphere. The catalysis degree is also affected by the O 2 concentrations, and the lowest catalysis degree is generally around 20 vol% O 2 concentration. In this paper, we report the new experimental values of densities, speeds of sound, and refractive indices for four binary mixtures: {methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) + dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or acetone or acetonitrile, or cyclohexane} over the entire composition range and in the temperatures range (293.15–313.15) K at 10 K intervals and pressure p = 0.1 MPa. From these experimental results, thermodynamics properties: excess molar volume, isentropic compressibility, deviation in isentropic compressibility and deviation in refractive indices were calculated. Excess molar volume, deviation in isentropic compressibility and deviation in refractive indices have been correlated using the Redlich–Kister equation . This paper critically reviews the multidimensional benefits of ozonation in wastewater treatment plants. These benefits include sludge reduction, removal of emerging trace organic contaminants (TrOC) from wastewater and sludge, and resource recovery from sludge. Literature shows that ozonation leads to sludge solubilisation, reducing overall biomass yield. Sludge solubilisation is primarily influenced by ozone dosage, which, in turn, depends on the fraction of ozonated sludge, ozone concentration, and sludge concentration. Additionally, sludge ozonation facilitates the removal of TrOCs from wastewater. On the other hand, by inducing cell lysis, ozonation increases the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nutrient concentration of the sludge supernatant, which deteriorates effluent quality. This issue can be resolved by implementing resource recovery. Thus far, successful retrieval of phosphorous from ozonated sludge supernatant has been performed. The recovery of phosphorous and other resources from sludge could help offset the operation cost of ozonation, and give greater incentive for wastewater treatment plants to adapt this approach. The collection radius of biomass raw materials is an important factor affecting the volume of raw materials for energy utilization. At present, it is usually studied based on a single biomass combined heat and power (CHP) plant. However, as the heat transfer threshold of biomass CHP plant is limited, it is necessary to consider the optimal collection radius and biomass raw material allocation under the distribution mode of multiple power plants to improve the overall utilization rate of raw materials. Biomass raw material collection distance threshold (BCDT) refers to the maximum road length between the resource point (that allows the transportation of raw materials to the biomass CHP plant) and the biomass CHP plant. Under the mode of multi-power plant planning, the greater the BCDT is, the more destinations there will be for raw materials to be transported to from the same resource point, and the more flexible the transportation plans and allocation of transportation volumes will be. This also means more raw materials can be ultimately used for energy utilization, which leads to higher transportation cost. Therefore, determining the appropriate BCDT plays a key role in the unified planning of biomass raw materials. Based on the limitation of heat transfer threshold, this paper carries out multi-power plant planning with Fuxin City as the research object. Based on such planning, ArcGIS is used to generate biomass raw material planning schemes with different BCDTs. Then the transportation cost and energy surplus factor (ratio of renewable resource potential to energy demand) of each scheme are calculated and compared. The results show that there is a positive correlation between BCDT and the energy surplus factor. With the increase of BCDT, the growth rate of the energy surplus factor gradually becomes slower. The study also allows to set the utilization threshold of biomass energy utilization capacity and obtain the corresponding BCDT. In order to achieve a higher energy surplus factor, it is recommended that 40 km be used as the BCDT when carrying out uniform planning for biomass raw materials. At this time, the utilization of biomass energy utilization capacity is 75%, which can achieve a high degree of energy self-sufficiency and ensure its economic competitiveness. • The mode of multi-power plant planning is considered. • Collection distance instead of collection radium is used. • The method of unified allocation of biomass resources is confirmed. • The optimal biomass raw material collection distance threshold is determined. The production of biofuels as alternative energy source over fossil fuels has gained immense interest over the years as it can contribute significantly to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from energy production and utilization. Also with rapidly increasing fuel price and fall in oil wells, the present scenario forces us to look for an alternative source of energy that will help us in the operation of industrial as well as the transportation sector. The pulp mills in India are one of the many options. The pulp mills in India can help us to produce bio-fuels by thermo-chemical/biochemical conversion of black liquor and wood residues. These technologies include extraction of hemi-cellulose from wooden chips and black liquor, lignin from black liquor, methanol from evaporator condensates, biogas production from waste sludge, syngas production from biomass using gasification and bio-oil production from biomass using pyrolysis. The objective of this paper is to overview these emerging bio-refinery technologies that can be implemented in Indian Forest Industry to get bio-fuels, bio-chemicals and bio-energy to reduce GHG emissions. Biochars are products that are rich in carbon obtained by pyrolysis processes that consist in introducing a biomass (such as wood or manure) in a closed container and heating it with little or no available air. This paper reports the impacts of pyrolysis parameters on biochar characteristics. A preliminary examination of the scientific literature revealed that the type of feedstock, the temperature, the heating rate and the gas flow were the major parameters influencing the biochar characteristics. This review highlights the multitude of biochars that can be made and shows the importance of characterizing them before their use in soils. Then we assess how the input of biochars in soils can affect soil parameters. A review of the literature showed modifications on: i) the physical properties of soils ( i . e . the modification in soil structure and water retention), ii) the chemical properties of soils ( i . e . the modification of pH, cation exchange capacity, nutrient availability, the organic matter content) and iii) the biological properties ( i . e . the changes in microbial and faunal communities). All these modifications can lead to an increase in crop productivity, which confirms the value of biochars as a soil amendment. Moreover, biochars can also provide an advantage for soil remediation. Indeed, biochars efficiently reduce the bioavailability of organic and inorganic pollutants. In addition, this review focuses on a specific plant that can be used to produce biochars: Miscanthus , a non-wood rhizomatous C4 perennial grass. Miscanthus presents advantages for biochar production due to: i) its lignocellulosic content, ii) its silicon content, which can mitigate environmental stresses (notably for plants grown on contaminated sites) and iii) the greater surface area of the Miscanthus biochars compared to the biochars produced with other feedstock. Water pollution causes substantial damage to the environment and to human health, and the current methods to treat pollution suffer from high cost and low efficiency, resulting in increased environmental damages. Using genetic modification and functional selection, we developed a novel biosorbent from Genetically Engineered Bacillus subtilis (GEBS) cells. At a ratio of biosorbent to direct blue dye of about 1:1.25 in a water solution, the dye pigments can be completely adsorbed in 40 s, decreasing COD to zero. Contrary to other biosorbents, ions such as Fe 2+ and Cu 2+ have significant advantages in terms of the adsorbing efficiency. The GEBS biomass can therefore capture both organics and ions from wastewater simultaneously and achieve co-precipitation in 2–10 min, which are features critical for practical applications of wastewater treatment. In addition, we used six different eluting solutions to regenerate used biomass, all resulting in renewed, highly efficient color and COD elimination capacities, with the best elution solution being NaHCO 3 and Na 2 CO 3 . For practical applications, we showed a high COD elimination rate when using the GEBS biomass to treat raw water from textile enterprises, paper mill, and petrochemical industries. Compared with currently available adsorbing agents, the GEBS cells can adsorb organic and ion waste much faster and with much higher efficiency, can be regenerated and recycled efficiently, and may have broad applications in treating organic water pollution. Overall, 83 manuscripts were received, with final publication of those having the highest quality, accepted after peer-reviewing. This paper reviews the literature on crop residue burning - a widespread practice in many regions in South Asia. Specifically, we examine evidence from studies highlighting the scale of the practice in South Asia, the environmental implications, the drivers of the practice and the remedies to the problem. The studies provide evidence that the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) is a hot-spot for atmospheric pollutants, with seasonal crop residue burning being a major contributor. The burning of crop residue is reported to degrade the soil, increase the risk of erosion, and increase the soil temperature, consequently decimating soil microorganisms. This subsequently impacts the monetary cost involved in recovering the soil fertility and the potential for further pollution through the increased use of fertilizer. The review shows that farmers' reasons for burning crop residues are mainly the high cost of incorporating, collecting, transporting, and processing crop residues in South Asia. Labour shortages, the marketability of the crop residue and the short time interval between harvest and next cropping seasons also influence farmers decision to burn crop residue. To address this problem, there is the need to encourage the use of agricultural machines capable of sowing crops in standing stubble, adopting in-situ practices and changing crop varieties to those with short duration. In addition, education and awareness are needed to change beliefs and perceptions on crop residue burning. Sorbitol can be selectively transformed into liquid alkanes over a bifunctional catalytic system Pt/ZrO 2 + TiO 2 –WO x . In this paper, we investigated the reaction mechanism by carefully analyzing the numerous products issued from sorbitol and by studying the reactivity of some identified intermediates (1-hexanol 2-hexanol, 2-hexanone, 2,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran, 1,2-hexanediol and 1,2,6-hexanetriol). This led us to propose that C C cleavage reactions occur on terminal C C bonds and mainly consist of dehydrogenation–decarbonylation reactions. The limiting steps of the sorbitol transformation are the isosorbide and mono-oxygenated intermediate transformations, especially the hydrogenation of ketones. It is also assessed that diols or triols with n carbon atoms are mainly converted in compounds with n − 1 carbon atoms. Short compounds (1 to 3 carbon atoms) are obtained via a dehydrogenation-retro-aldol reaction pathway and not from isosorbide conversion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports the kinetics evaluation of landfill leachate anaerobic treatment in a pilot-scale Anaerobic Sequence Batch Biofilm Reactor (AnSBBR). The experiment was carried out at room temperature (23.8 ± 2.1 °C) in the landfill area in São Carlos-SP, Brazil. Biomass from the bottom of a local landfill leachate stabilization pond was used as inoculum. After acclimated and utilizing leachate directly from the landfill, the AnSBBR presented efficiency over 70%, in terms of COD removal, with influent COD ranging from 4825 mg L-1 to 12,330 mg L-1 . To evaluate the kinetics of landfill leachate treatment, temporal profiles of COD Filt. concentration were performed and a first-order kinetics model was adjusted for substrate consumption, obtaining an average k1 = 4.40 × 10-5 L mgTVS-1 d-1 , corrected to 25 °C. Considering the temperature variations, a temperature-activity coefficient ϴ = 1.07 was obtained. Statistical "Randomness" and "F" tests were used to successfully validate the model considered. Thus, the results demonstrate that the first-order kinetic model is adequate to model the anaerobic treatment of the landfill leachate in the AnSBBR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biomass-fuelled Combined Heat and Power Generation (CHP) systems can efficiently convert chemical energy contained in biomass into electricity and heat. Currently there is a large number of abandoned forests and biomass of agroforestry origin that is not being used. The use of residual biomass as a source of energy in CHP systems is presented as a particularly attractive alternative for energy obtention. This paper presents the results of a biomass boiler coupled to an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). Three residual biomasses, named pruning vine, pruning kiwi and gorse have been selected due to their potentiality and availability in the Galicia-North Portugal Euroregion. For this purpose, micro-cogeneration tests at bench scale were performed, based fundamentally on varying dissipation conditions in the low-grade temperature range (below 100 °C). Micro-cogeneration performance was assessed based on the electrical power and efficiency obtained, along with the global efficiency achieved (electrical plus thermal). Combustion measurements comprised gaseous emissions analyses and determination of the efficiency of the process. Micro-cogeneration results obtained show that differences in temperature between the hot and the cold source have a significant influence. The higher the temperature difference, the higher the electrical power and efficiency, as well as the higher global performance obtained, with values close to the maximum of the ORC employed (i.e 4 kW e , 9% and 96% respectively). Thus, the technical feasibility of the system to simultaneously obtain heat and electricity from low grade heat sources in small-scale applications was demonstrated. Regarding to combustion, parameters regulated by European emission standards are under the limits using the biofuels (residual biomasses) studied. Natural vegetation restoration (NVR) highly relates to the development of gully erosion, and is mainly determined by both the soil properties and species competition in the gullies. However, it is still not clear what are the key factors influencing on the vegetation restoration in the gullies with the poor soil properties (e.g. low soil organic matter and nutrients) under the special hydrological process (e.g. high runoff intensity and long flow duration). In this study, soil total organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), available nitrogen (AN), ammonium nitrogen (NH 4 +-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 −-N), total phosphorus (TP), available phosphorus (AP), pH, soil moisture (SM) were investigated, and both regression and structural equation model analysis were used for detecting how soil properties and species competition influence the herbaceous plants restoration in the poor quality of Mollisols in gullies of Northeast China. The results show that, (1) influence of NH 4 +-N, AN, TN, pH on biomass was stronger in 0–10 cm than that in 10–20 cm soil depth, opposite was stronger in 10–20 cm than that in 0–10 cm soil depth for NO 3 −-N, SOC and SM (P < 0.05). (2) NH 4 +-N, NO 3 −-N, AN, TN, SOC, pH, C:N were all negative, while SM was positive to plant biodiversity in soil layers (P < 0.05). (3) SOM mainly mediates the TN and NH 4 +-N and then directly or indirectly influences on biodiversity and biomass, and P changed the species richness when AP >20 mg kg−1 in 10–20 cm soil depth. (4) Vegetation restoration was mainly determined by the dynamics of Elymus dahuricus Turcz. firstly, and then by Leymus chinensis (Trin.) Tzvel. at the early of vegetation restoration. The combustion of coal can result in trace elements, such as mercury, being released from power stations with potentially harmful effects for both human health and the environment. Research is ongoing to develop cost-effective and efficient control technologies for mercury removal from coal-fired power plants, the largest source of anthropogenic mercury emissions. A number of activated carbon sorbents have been demonstrated to be effective for mercury retention in coal combustion power plants. However, more economic alternatives need to be developed. Raw biomass gasification chars could serve as low-cost sorbents for capturing mercury since they are sub-products generated during a thermal conversion process. The aim of this study was to evaluate different biomass gasification chars as mercury sorbents in a simulated coal combustion flue gas. The results were compared with those obtained using a commercial activated carbon. Chars from a mixture of paper and plastic waste showed the highest retention capacity. It was found that not only a high carbon content and a well developed microporosity but also a high chlorine content and a high aluminium content improved the mercury retention capacity of biomass gasification chars. No relationship could be inferred between the surface oxygen functional groups and mercury retention in the char samples evaluated. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: The use of biomass for cooking and heating is considered an important factor associated with respiratory diseases. However, few studies evaluate the amount of particulate matter less than 2.5μm in diameter (PM2.5), symptoms and lung function in the same population. Objectives: To evaluate the respiratory effects of biomass combustion and compare the results with those of individuals from the same community in Brazil using liquefied petroleum gas (Gas). Methods: 1402 individuals in 260 residences were divided into three groups according to exposure (Gas, Indoor-Biomass, Outside-Biomass). Respiratory symptoms were assessed using questionnaires. Reflectance of paper filters was used to assess particulate matter exposure. In 48 residences the amount of PM2.5 was also quantified. Pulmonary function tests were performed in 120 individuals. Results: Reflectance index correlated directly with PM2.5 (r=0.92) and was used to estimate exposure (ePM2.5). There was a significant increase in ePM2.5 in Indoor-Biomass and Outside-Biomass, compared to Gas. There was a significantly increased odds ratio (OR) for cough, wheezing and dyspnea in adults exposed to Indoor-Biomass (OR=2.93, 2.33, 2.59, respectively) and Outside-Biomass (OR=1.78, 1.78, 1.80, respectively) compared to Gas. Pulmonary function tests revealed both Non-Smoker-Biomass and Smoker-Gas individuals to have decreased %predicted-forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and FEV1/forced vital capacity (FVC) as compared to Non-Smoker-Gas . Pulmonary function tests data was inversely correlated with duration and ePM2.5. The prevalence of airway obstruction was 20% in both Non-Smoker-Biomass and Smoker-Gas subjects. Conclusion: Chronic exposure to biomass combustion is associated with increased prevalence of respiratory symptoms, reduced lung function and development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The disposal problem associated with phytoextraction of farmland polluted with heavy metals by means of willow requires a biomass conversion technique which meets both ecological and economical needs. Combustion and gasification of willow require special and costly flue gas treatment to avoid re-emission of the metals in the atmosphere, whereas flash pyrolysis mainly results in the production of (almost) metal free bio-oil with a relatively high water content. Flash co-pyrolysis of biomass and waste of biopolymers synergistically improves the characteristics of the pyrolysis process: e.g. reduction of the water content of the bio-oil, more bio-oil and less char production and an increase of the HHV of the oil. This research paper investigates the economic consequences of the synergistic effects of flash co-pyrolysis of 1:1 w/w ratio blends of willow and different biopolymer waste streams via cost-benefit analysis and Monte Carlo simulations taking into account uncertainties. In all cases economic opportunities of flash co-pyrolysis of biomass with biopolymer waste are improved compared to flash pyrolysis of pure willow. Of all the biopolymers under investigation, polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is the most promising, followed by Eastar, Biopearls, potato starch, polylactic acid (PLA), corn starch and Solanyl in order of decreasing profits. Taking into account uncertainties, flash co-pyrolysis is expected to be cheaper than composting biopolymer waste streams, except for corn starch. If uncertainty increases, composting also becomes more interesting than flash co-pyrolysis for waste of Solanyl. If the investment expenditure is 15% higher in practice than estimated, the preference for flash co-pyrolysis compared to composting biopolymer waste becomes less clear. Only when the system of green current certificates is dismissed, composting clearly is a much cheaper processing technique for disposing of biopolymer waste. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Bioremediation of arsenic contaminated soils and groundwater shows a great potential for future development due to its environmental compatibility and possible cost-effectiveness. It relies on microbial activity to remove, mobilize, and contain arsenic through sorption, biomethylation¿demethylation, complexation, coprecipitation, and oxidation¿reduction processes. This paper gives an evaluation on the feasibility of using biological methods for the remediation of arsenic contaminated soils and groundwater. Ex-situ bioleaching can effectively remove bulk arsenic from contaminated soils. Biostimulation such as addition of carbon sources and mineral nutrients can be applied to promote the leaching rate. Biosorption can be used either ex-situ or in-situ to remove arsenic from groundwater by sorption to biomass and/or coprecipitation with biogenic solids or sulfides. Introduction of proper biosorbents or microorganisms to produce active biosorbents in-situ is the key to the success of this method. Phytoremediation depends on arsenic-hyperaccumulating plants to remove arsenic from soils and shallow groundwater by translocating it into plant tissues. Engineering genetic strategies can be employed to increase the arsenic-hyperaccumulating capacity of the plants. Biovolatilization may be developed potentially as an ex-situ treatment technology. Abstract: As opposed to mesophilic, thermophilic anaerobic digestion of food waste can increase the biogas output of reactors. To facilitate the transition of anaerobic digesters, this paper investigated the impact of adapting mesophilic sludge to thermophilic conditions. A 5L bench scale reactor was seeded with mesophilic granular sludge obtained from an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket digester. After 13 days of operation at 35°C, the reactor temperature was instantaneously increased to 55°C and operated at this temperature until day 21. The biomass was then fed food waste on days 21, 42 and 63, each time with an F/M (Food/Microorganism) ratio increasing from 0.12 to 4.43gVS/gVSS. Sludge samples were collected on days 0, 21, 42 and 63 to conduct substrate activity tests, and reactor biogas production was monitored during the full experimental period. The sludge collected on day 21 demonstrated that the abrupt temperature change had no pasteurization effect, but rather lead to a biomass with a fermentative activity of 3.58g Glucose/gVSS/d and a methanogenic activity of 0.47 and 0.26g Substrate/gVSS/d, related respectively, to acetoclastic and hydrogenophilic microorganisms. At 55°C, an ultimate gas production (Go) and a biodegradation potential (Bo) of 0.2–1.4LSTP/gVSfed and of 0.1–0.84LSTP CH4/gVSfed were obtained, respectively. For the treatment of food waste, a fully adapted inoculum was developed by eliminating the initial time-consuming acclimatization stage from mesophilic to thermophilic conditions. The feeding stage was initiated within 20 days, but to increase the population of thermophilic methanogenic microorganisms, a substrate supply program must be carefully observed. Abstract: Energy supply and use is of fundamental importance to society. Although the interactions between energy and environment were originally local in character, they have now widened to cover regional and global issues, such as acid rain and the greenhouse effect. It is for this reason that there is a need for covering the direct and indirect economic and environmental impacts of energy acquisition, transport, production and use. In this paper, particular attention is directed to ways of resolving conflict between economic and environmental goals by encouraging a power plant to consider co-firing biomass and refuse-derived fuel (RDF) with coal simultaneously. It aims at reducing the emission level of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in an uncertain environment, using the power plant in Michigan City, Indiana as an example. To assess the uncertainty by a comparative way both deterministic and grey nonlinear mixed integer programming (MIP) models were developed to minimize the net operating cost with respect to possible fuel combinations. It aims at generating the optimal portfolio of alternative fuels while maintaining the same electricity generation simultaneously. To ease the solution procedure stepwise relaxation algorithm was developed for solving the grey nonlinear MIP model. Breakeven alternative fuel value can be identified in the post-optimization stage for decision-making. Research findings show that the inclusion of RDF does not exhibit comparative advantage in terms of the net cost, albeit relatively lower air pollution impact. Yet it can be sustained by a charge system, subsidy program, or emission credit as the price of coal increases over time. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper addresses the treatment of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) effluent using anaerobic and aerobic processes. Laboratory studies were carried out on flow proportionate composite wastewater generated from the manufacturing of PTA. An activated sludge process (ASP—two stage and single stage) and an upflow anaerobic fixed film fixed bed reactor (AFFFBR) were used, individually and in combination. The performance of a full-scale ETP under existing operating conditions was also studied. Full scale ETP studies revealed that the treatment of PTA effluent using a two-stage ASP alone does not meet treated effluent quality within the prescribed Indian Standards. The biomass produced in the two stage ASP was very viscous and fluffy and the sludge volume index (SVI) was very high (200–450ml/g). However, pretreatment of PTA effluent using an upflow AFFFBR ensured substantial reduction in BOD (63%) and COD (62%) with recovery of biogas at 1.8–1.96l/l effluent treated at a volumetric loading rate (VLR) 4–5kgCOD/m3 d. The methane content in the biogas varied between 55% and 60%. The pretreated effluent from the upflow AFFFBR was then treated through a single stage ASP. The biomass produced in the ASP after anaerobic treatment had very good settlability (SVI: 75–90ml/g) as compared to the two stage ASP and the treated effluent quality with respect to BOD, COD and SS was within the prescribed Indian Standards. The alternative treatment process comprising an upflow AFFFBR and a single stage ASP ensured net power saving of 257kW and in addition generated 442kW of power through the AFFFBR. Large scale process-based modeling is a useful approach to estimate distributions of global net primary productivity (NPP). In this paper, in order to validate an existing NPP model with observed data at site level, field experiments were conducted at three sites in northern China. One site is located in Qilian Mountain in Gansu Province, and the other two sites are in Changbaishan Natural Reserve and Dunhua County in Jilin Province. Detailed field experiments are discussed and field data are used to validate the simulated NPP. Remotely sensed images including Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper plus (ETM+, 30m spatial resolution in visible and near infrared bands) and Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER, 15m spatial resolution in visible and near infrared bands) are used to derive maps of land cover, leaf area index, and biomass. Based on these maps, field measured data, soil texture and daily meteorological data, NPP of these sites are simulated for year 2001 with the boreal ecosystem productivity simulator (BEPS). The NPP in these sites ranges from 80 to 800gCm−2 a−1. The observed NPP agrees well with the modeled NPP. This study suggests that BEPS can be used to estimate NPP in northern China if remotely sensed images of high spatial resolution are available. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Environmental and health problems associated with the use of digested sewage sludge hinder its application and encourage the introduction of additional treatments such as composting and thermal drying. The aim of this paper is to assess the possibility of using three different types of sewage sludge (digested, composted and thermally dried) to improve soil fertility and enhance the transformation of an unproductive shrub land into a Mediterranean dehesa for grazing purposes and also to reduce wildfire risk. In total, 10tha−1 of dry matter of three types of sewage sludge were spread on the soil surface of 4×5m field plots, and then seeded with a mixture of grasses. Effects on soil fertility and plant growth were monitored over 2 years. The results show that all three types of sludge application had a significant effect on vegetation cover, herbaceous biomass (2767. 7±716. 1 and 1735. 0±299. 7kgha−1 for digested sludge amended and control plots, respectively) and tree growth (0. 41±0. 108cmyear−1 on amended trees, 14. 6% more than control trees). This study proposes the use of multi-criteria analysis to identify the most suitable fertilization alternatives and to assist in the decision-making process of sludge recycling. Because of the high degree of uncertainty and conflicting objectives associated with these decisions, multi-criteria evaluation tools make a valuable contribution to decision-making processes concerning sewage sludge applications. According to multi-criteria results, the composted sludge alternative is the most suitable. This is because all the objectives are achieved: an improvement in the properties and functions of the soil with a positive vegetation response as well as minimal economic cost and risk of toxicity. Oxy-combustion is one of the most promising technologies for carbon capture and sequestration. When CO 2 -neutral biomass is burned under oxy-combustion conditions, named "oxy-biomass combustion" a negative CO 2 emission can be achieved. However, the high content of potassium and chlorine in biomass results in sever ash deposition and corrosion in air fired furnaces, which are further aggravated in oxy-combustion mode due to the enrichment of corrosive species by flue gas recycle. In this paper, the hot corrosion behaviors and mechanism of two representative materials (TP347H, HR3C) used for superheaters in furnaces are studied. The effects of oxy-combustion atmosphere, KCl deposition, effect of SO 2 , effect of water vapor, and temperature on the corrosion kinetics at the starting stage are investigated. The corrosion severity of the materials was determined using the weight gain method, and the microstructures and chemical compositions of corrosion layers were characterized by the scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The results show that the hot corrosion rate is significantly sped up by KCl deposition, more than five times the gas corrosion rate under the same gas composition and temperature. HR3C with higher Cr and Ni contents is more likely to form Cr enrichment on the interface between the corrosion layer and the substrate than TP347H, resulting in stronger resistance to the hot corrosion than TP347H. When the corrosion atmosphere is changed from air-combustion to oxy-combustion, the hot corrosion rate is reduced with a denser Cr oxide film and less metal sulfides. The increase of temperature in the presence of KCl deposition significantly affects the hot corrosion rate, e.g. the corrosion rate at 650 °C is 16 times higher than that at 450 °C. Water vapor and SO 2 concentrations have opposite influences on the hot corrosion, respectively. Compared to the dry environment, a high-humidity environment decreases the hot corrosion rate; however, a higher SO 2 concentration facilitates the sulfation of KCl deposits, leading to stronger damage to the chromium oxide film and thereby an increased hot corrosion rate. • The hot corrosion behaviors of two representative materials (TP347H, HR3C) are studied. • Hot corrosion rate is significantly sped up by KCl deposition. • Hot corrosion could be reduced when changed from air-fuel to oxy-fuel combustion. • The corrosion rate at 650 °C is 16 times that of 450 °C. • A high-humidity environment decreases the hot corrosion rate, while SO 2 has opposite influences. Solid waste management and its stabilization are a sophisticated task and the most challenging one as it requires improved collection and treatment strategies. From the past decades, there is a huge emphasis on valorisation of waste along with its management i.e. an integrated and income generating sustainable approach for solid waste management. Use of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) in organic waste composting is a novel and an environment friendly approach which holds enormous potential and therefore, is strongly captivating people's attention worldwide. The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae composting is a self-sustained cost-effective method promoting high resource recovery and generating value added products thereby developing new economical niches for industrial sector and entrepreneurs in developing countries. Here, we reviewed the importance of BSF larvae in organic waste treatment and delineated the life cycle patterns, feeding habits and environmental conditions affecting the survival of the species. This review paper has also congregated the efficiency of BSF larvae to compost different types of organic wastes or biomasses and a portion of various possible end applications of these avid eaters.
