This paper presents a detailed analysis of how future climate change may affect water availability in a typical arid endorheic river basin, the Heihe River basin (HRB), in northwest China. The analysis is based on the improved Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), which is calibrated and validated with historical streamflow data from the upper HRB and is used to predict future hydrological responses. Six general circulation models (GCMs), under two emission scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5), are downscaled to construct future climate change scenarios. The results suggest that the climate of the upper HRB will likely become warmer and wetter in the near future (2021-50), with the largest increase in precipitation occurring in the summer. Correspondingly, the basinwide evapotranspiration, snowmelt, and runoff are projected to increase over the same period. The mean temperature in the near future is projected to rise, relative to the recent 30 years (1981-2010), by 1.2°-1.7°C under scenario RCP4.5 and by 1.4°-2.1°C under scenario RCP8.5. The mean precipitation is projected to increase by 10.0%-16.6% under scenario RCP4.5, and by 10.5%-22.0% under scenario RCP8.5. The mean values of evapotranspiration, snowmelt, and runoff are expected to increase by 14.2%, 4.3%, and 11.4%, respectively, under scenario RCP4.5 and to increase by 18.7%, 5.8%, and 12.8%, respectively, under scenario RCP8.5. Though the model simulations forecast an increase in streamflows in the headwater region of the HRB, future water availability varies significantly over space and time. Seasonal variations in precipitation (P) and potential evapotranspiration (ET0) are critical for regional hydrometeorological studies and water resource management. The sinusoidal function is widely used to describe the seasonal pattern of P and ET0. However, high errors occur either in the arid places or in places with hyperseasonal precipitation. These limitations are intrinsic properties of the sinusoidal climate descriptor and remain a barrier to provide insight into regional water-energy partitions and hydrologic similarity and predictability. In this study, we used a Gaussian framework as an alternative to describe seasonal variations in P and ET0 regimes in the Yellow River basin (YRB). The results show that the Gaussian framework provides a good approximation to the seasonal pattern of P and has a strong regional applicability for reproducing the monthly PandET0. This allows us to assess the climate seasonality characterizing the regional balance between water supply and energy availability using δP, δET0, and aridity index. The climate seasonality indicates that the balance between water supply and energy availability has a switch in about 32% of the grid cells during the seasonal cycle from1982 to 2015. These grid cells are mostly located in regions with average annual precipitation above 550 mm. In the northwest region of the YRB, which has a dry climate, the amount of potential evapotranspiration always exceeds the precipitation. We argue that the Gaussian function provides a quantitative conceptual framework for accurate assessment of regional water supply and energy availability and offers a penetrating insight into hydrometeorology. Climate change and its potential threats on water security call for reliable predictions of evapotranspiration (ET) and runoff Q at different time scales, but current knowledge of the differences in their predictability between humid and nonhumid regions is limited.Based on spatially distributed catchments inChina, the authors characterized their predictability and provided plausible explanations. Using the Budyko framework, it was confirmed that annualET is predictable in nonhumid regions but less predictable in humid regions, and annualQ is predictable in humid regions but less reliable in nonhumid regions. Themain cause of the varied predictability lies in the variation of water storage change DS in the water balance equation. It affects both the estimation and the variability ofQin nonhumid catchmentsmore than that in humid catchments, which increases the challenge of predicting annual Q in nonhumid regions, while the opposite effect occurs in annual ET prediction between humid and nonhumid catchments.Moreover, the differences between the controlling factors of ET variability in different regions add more differences in their predictability. The dominant control of precipitation makes it easy to predict annual ET in nonhumid regions. By contrast, precipitation, potential evaporation, and their covariance take considerable effort to determine annualETvariations,which leads to less reliableETestimation and predictability in humid catchments. Therefore, one can accurately predict annual ET in nonhumid catchments andQ in humid catchments based on commonly used hydrological models.With proper consideration of ΔS, the predictability of annual ET and Q in both humid and nonhumid catchments can be improved. Variability of the climate in the headwater drainage basins of the Yangtze River and Yellow River during 1961-2010 was investigated by examining four typical climatic variables: daily minimum, mean, and maximum temperatures and daily precipitation. The results indicate that the temporal trends vary among the climatic variables and the time periods examined. The increase in daily minimum temperature began later than the daily mean and maximum temperatures, but the increase rate of the former was relatively greater after 1985. The abrupt increases in precipitation that occurred near 1978 were much clearer than the three temperature variables. Four dominant periodicities (3, 7, 11, and 18-20 yr) of temperature and precipitation were identified, and these variation patterns directly determined the periodic discharge variations in the two rivers. Under climate change impacts, periodic variations in temperature and precipitation at long temporal scales were intensified after the 1980s. Comparatively, climate change more severely impacts the minimum temperature and precipitation than the maximum and mean temperatures in the study area, and the variability of daily precipitation is more complex than the three temperature variables. Overall, the headwater drainage basin of the Yellow River is more susceptible to climate change compared with the other basin. After 2008, the increase rate of temperature (especially the daily mean and minimum temperatures) became greater, and precipitation showed a downward trend in the study areas.
