The advancement of digital technologies has an impact on how information is disseminated and made accessible in the academic world. The use of digital resources has grown significantly, with e-books becoming a valuable educational resource. Panjab University library is spending a huge amount of money in terms of subscribing to a number of e resources to fulfill the information demand of faculty and students. PU library started subscribing to e-books from the year 2008 and presently a diverse collection of e-books from reputed publishers are available for the users. Since no such study has been conducted to examine the use and awareness of e-books, to determine level of relevance of e-books, subscribed by Panjab University, it is therefore imperative to investigate how Panjab University students use and are aware of their subscription to e-books. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed using a simple random sampling method and 202 responses were received. This paper also explores the usage, relevance and the difficulties encountered while accessing e-books. For this purpose, an online survey was conducted amongst post graduate students and research scholars of Panjab University. Majority of the respondents 73 (66.4 %) are accessing e-books through University Library website. 72 (62.6 %) of respondents express that friends and teachers helped them to know about availability of e-books in the library. Respondents encountered problems i.e. difficulties to login the sites, low speed of internet and restrictions in downloading etc. while accessing e-books. This study offers some useful and practical suggestions that can help libraries to enrich their e-book collections. Achieving maritime security is challenging due to the vastness and complexity of the domain. Monitoring all vessels that use this medium is humanly impossible but is needed for law enforcement. This paper proposes a machine learning solution based on HDBSCAN+ to classify the movements of vessels into 'normal' or 'abnormal'. This classification reduces the number of vessels that have to be monitored by law enforcement agencies to a manageable size. To date, AIS is the primary source of information that can represent vessel movements and enable the detection of maritime anomalies. The proposed model uses latitude, longitude, type of vessel, course and speed as features of the AIS data for analysis. The performance of the proposed model is validated against the marine incidents reported by Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR). Brahmi Script is one of the earliest scripts known to India and South Asia and it is also an ancestral script for all the indigenous scripts present in India. Researchers, historians, laymen, etc. need these sources of information systematically and handily. In the scholarly world, a huge amount of data and information (Digital Humanities based collections) related to Brahmi script is available but all this information is scattered in the form of texts, images, videos, etc. This creates chaos to understand the overall story of the Brahmi script from its inception to till date. With these issues, we felt motivated to present the data and information related to Brahmi script among their users in a more informative, easily accessible, and comfortably understandable manner. In this paper, we have tried to connect all the dots related to Brahmi script under one umbrella with the help of the Digital humanities tool-Visual Eyes. Further, we have mapped these multimedia formats with each other on the historical timeline, interactive maps and story events to establish and understand the relationship among the various facets of the Brahmi script. The impact of this research is more appealing as it has presented a new dimension for any other script to make it more accessible and easily understandable worldwide while using an innovative open-source tool. Web links explore much useful information through densely linked web pages for a specific group of people or people with special research interest. The paper analyses the web link structure for a group of 23 IITs to discover new sources of information. It also discusses the problems of search engines and its limitations in web link analysis. Web link structures of Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are analysed using SocSciBot4.0 and Pajek4. The paper tries to find out the pattern of hyperlinks among the premier IITs and new IITs separately. The study also covers the historical aspects and approaches of link analysis. Backlinks of IITs are analysed and micro-link topologies are constructed using Pajek. The result shows that more than 90 per cent of backlinks are in English language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Information literacy emphasizes to the access, evaluation and use of information. Media literacy emphasizes the ability to understand, evaluate and use media as a leading source and producer of information. Thus, UNESCO considered information literacy and media literacy together as Media Information Literacy (MIL), which is essential to empower people with critical knowledge about media functions, information systems, and their content. In the beginning, information literacy and media literacies were discussed separately as distinct fields. After technological developments and a fair amount of interdisciplinary research work in these areas were carried out, based on which UNESCO made considerable effort to bring these fields together as media and information literate. Today's students and researchers need a different set of competencies like knowledge, skills and attitude are necessary for their work. Health care is one of the field in which constant research is going on. Research has been amplified in the last decade. The main objective of this paper is to compare the quality of research output of the two high profile health care institutions of North India--All India Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi and Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. The study has been conducted using Scopus citation database. In this paper, research output of these institutions during 1999-2008 has been compared in the form of growth of publication, rank of various subjects, further citations of these publications has been observed to check the quality of the research using three year window in addition to the h-index as well as the International collaboration of publications (ICP). Except difference in total number of publications, growth, rank, quality and ICP all are almost the same. Difference in number of publications can be due to the limitations of the study and duration of establishment of these institutes. Earlier, due to paucity of means to gauge the quality of the research, it was not possible to observe the quality of the research. Hence, an effort has been made to create awareness amongst the medical fraternity about the quality check of their research, which is now possible through these citation databases. Access management illustrates the process of providing controlled, and secure access to resources. It involves both authentication--the process of determining the validity of a user who claims to be, and autorisation--the process of determining what resources a user is permitted to access. Access management is significant as an important as well as one of the key services for the network infrastructure of digital repository activities for a wide range of audiences. Like the digital collection of digital repository, it also requires that the content be accessed and distributed as widely as possible to valid users around the globe. Access management and control is one of the major concerns for digital content authority over the Internet. Confidentiality and integrity of information cannot be ensured without a proper access management mechanism. Though most of the Institutional Repositories or Open Access Repositories are satisfied with the Current mechanisms of the Open Source Software, which they use to build the repesitodes, restricted repositories or digital libraries demand more security and authenticity. This paper evaluates citations performance of 1101 Indian physics research papers published in 29 high impact physics journals in 1997. The evaluation is based on citations won by these papers within six years of publication. The purpose is to verify to what extent research evaluation based on journal impact factor can be considered objective and fair. The study finds that journal impact factor is not a surrogate to citations. Nearly 12% of papers in high impact journals did win even a single citation within six years of their publication. Secondly papers winning high range of citations per paper were published in a wide range of impact factor journals. The conclusion is that although impact factor is not a guarantee to citations but publication in high impact journals does improve the probability of winning citations, The higher the impact factor the greater their citations probability. This paper discusses teenagers' need of library resources and library services in the public libraries in Iran. Descriptive method is used and a researcher-made questionnaire formed the major instrument for data gathering. Descriptive and inferential statistics are applied. It found that teenagers' need is more textbooks than other resources, of course their first priority is educational books. It means that the teenagers interest to educational books, but it wasn't their main need. Most used library services was familiarity to library while adolescents need to expand and improve lending services. Finally, it was concluded that libraries were less successful in meeting the teenagers' need based on their priorities. Therefore, libraries need to be equally important in the development of their resources and services based on the priorities and needs. Many online learning repositories available around the world. This paper provides a comparative analysis among selected online learning repositories (eGyankosh, ePG pathshala, MIT resources and Sodhganga) for learning resources. The comparative study is based on some analytical parameters, like generic, content related, retrieval related, post processing, interface related, etc. The collected data have been analysed on the basis of parameters. The results have been displayed through different types of diagrams like multiple bar diagrams, pie diagram, etc. It was found that none of the selected online learning repositories achieved the full score. Bioinformatics emerged as a new discipline dedicated to the answer the queries about life science using computational approaches. The basic aim of bioinformatics is to create databases, analyse data sets and managing data generated through large-scale projects such as Human Genome project (HGP). It covers a wide variety of traditional computer science domains, such as data modeling, data retrieval, data mining, data integration, data managing, data warehousing, and simulation of biological information generated through laboratory and field experiments. Due to varied form, nature, and activities in the field of bioinformatics, presenting the information in cohesive fashion is major challenge. The bioinformatics information resources are heterogeneous in nature. Integration and interoperability of information is one of the biggest challenges in this field. Bioinformatics, as an emerging field, needs attention towards metadata application for resource discovery. This paper discusses the metadata element set description framework for integration of various information resources related to the field of bioinformatics available over internet. A web-based tool iBIRA: Integrated Bioinformatics Information Resources Access has been designed and developed for integration of bioinformatics information resources. Dublin Core metadata element set has been used for description of information resources and XML schema has been used for interoperability of information resources with others. A database has been designed using structure query language (SQL)-database management system and hypertext preprocessor (PHP)-as web programming languages for integration of bioinformatics resources. The database is designated to categorise various resources into biological database, institutions, journals, patents, software tools, web-servers, etc., and the search result is presented in the form of 'tree view'. The paper presents citation analysis of PhD theses submitted in the discipline of sociology of the University of Delhi during 1995-2010. The study is based on the 5766 citations taken out from 25 PhD theses of sociology. The study presents analysis of several parameters like authorship pattern, forms of literature, country-wise scattering of citations, distribution of Indian and foreign citations and a ranked list of top 30 cited sociology journals. The study finds that highest number of citations was single authored (83.94 %), and 67.23 % citations were from books and only 22.20 % citations were from journals. The country-wise scattering of citations reveals that 2536 (45.52 %) citations were from India and it was followed by USA and UK. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the use of collections and services at Dr B.R. Ambedkar NIT Central Library, Jalandhar. Well-structured 196 questionnaires were distributed among NIT Central Library users during the academic session 2010-11, to find out information seeking behaviour of the users. Out of them, 178 filled questionnaires were received, and 170 (95.51 %) were found fit for analysis. This study demonstrates and elaborates various aspects of the use of collections and services, purpose of visit to the library by the user, adequacy of library hours, infrastructure facilities and use of internet information resources. The paper also identifies the levels of use of various services provided, access of online database services, database search techniques, and users' awareness about different types of library network. It highlights satisfaction with overall functioning of the library. As digital information resources available online are increasing at an exponential rate, several practices have evolved for the economic and effective delivery of such information to the end users. In this context, consortia-based information services have gathered momentum world over during the last few years. Though, there are several library consortia in India, UGC Infonet is mainly meant for universities controlled by UGC and CeRA is meant for agricultural universities. This paper discusses utilisation of consortia-based digital information resources by the post graduate and doctoral students of the Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur. Results show that cent percent of the students were familiar with the use of digital information resources available online and 87.14 per cent of them used CeRA. Eighty two per cent students were acquainted with CeRA and learned the required skills for the access and use of digital information resources through curriculum-based courses like 'library and information services', 'research methodology', etc. The students in general would like to strengthen the CeRA services by adding more resources and facilities. This paper investigates the library information-seeking behaviour among undergraduate students of agricultural extension and education of Iran. By using stratified proportional random sampling (by Morgan table), 230 persons were selected from four famous universities (Tehran, Shiraz, Mollasani and Kermanshah) of Iran through questionnaires for this study. Reliability was measured by Cronbach-Alpha (á = 0.84), which showed that the reliability of the questionnaires was acceptable. Scale-free technique, Principal Components Analysis method, Eta test, and Correlation and Regression tools were used for data analysis. The findings revealed that awareness of library scientific resources and availability of library resources items were the most important and influenced factors in students' library information-seeking behaviour. Students with higher academic level are generally expected to have higher skills through information-seeking behaviour. On the contrary, this study indicates that the students were not influenced by this. Gaps in the library facilities in different universities (especially total number of related books to field and the number of computers) have direct influence on students' library information-seeking behaviour. E-governance brings urban and rural areas together and breaks the barrier of distance to lead an efficient administration. Surprisingly, e-governance has not made enough impact on the people as e-commerce and e-learning have done. In the digital world, libraries are emerging as means of creation and dissemination of knowledge. It is enough for e-commerce and e-learning to be reactive whereas e-governance to be proactive. While e-commerce and e-learning involve information management, e-governance involves knowledge management (KM). KM is the management of information, skill, experience, innovation, and intelligence. E-governance based on knowledge management system (KMS) is built on KM cycle of knowledge capturing, knowledge sharing, knowledge enhancing, and knowledge preserving. A few popular models of e-governance use a concept of "knowledge centers" to share knowledge. The digital library requires searching, sorting and KM strategies for maintaining/updating the resources. The paper describes an attempt made to identify the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT) library users' information needs by using data of inter-library loan (ILL) requests. ILL requests received for the year 2005 and 2006 were analysed. There were 688 documents requested during this period. The parameters studied were: frequently requested journals, and currency of users' information seeking by analysing publication year of all requested documents. The study found that 16 (5.95 per cent) journals were the most frequently requested journals, in which 31.8 per cent of requested documents had been published. About 50 per cent of the requested documents were published since 1995. The topic of data warehousing encompasses architectures, algorithms, and tools for bringing together the selected data from multiple databases or other information sources into a single repository called data warehouse. Extraction-transformation-loading tools are pieces of software responsible for the extraction of data from several sources, their cleaning, customisation, and insertion into a data warehouse. The paper proposes an object-oriented approach to accomplish the data extraction modelling of extraction-transformation-loading process. The data extraction scenario consists of data staging area, heterogeneous information sources, wrappers, monitors, integrator, and source identifier.
