In this work, the fabrication of Rochelle salt based piezoelectric structures is illustrated. Structures composed of paper and Rochelle salt are easily manufactured using simple processes. Both manufacturing and the material itself are environmental friendly. Additionally Rochelle salt is biocompatible. In the paradigm of a cleaner piezoelectric technology, the fabrication of active sensing or actuating devices is developed. Thus processing method, material and piezoelectric properties have been studied: (1) pure crystals are used as acoustic actuator, (2) properties of paper impregnated with Rochelle salt are detailed, (3) charge generation is demonstrated on the impregnated material. Abstract: Good cross-directional control of sheet variables in a paper machine depends on a number of factors. One such factor is the correct alignment of actuators with their corresponding responses. The alignment changes with time either locally or across the whole paper sheet due to a variety of reasons. In this paper, we provide an online mapping technique based on estimating the cross-correlation between actuator movement and the measurements. This procedure involves two steps–in the first step (called alignment monitoring) we determine if the current mapping is wrong at any CD position, and in the second step (called re-mapping), the alignment of actuators is corrected. The cross-directional model predictive control (CD-MPC) tuning problem is investigated for multiple-array paper-making process with parametric uncertainty. A systematic spatial tuning method is proposed to tune the penalty matrices such that the harmful high frequency elements in each actuator profile can be eliminated. A multivariable temporal filter is employed to adjust the output references, and a temporal tuning algorithm is developed for the filter parameters to achieve the pre-specified 2 σ performance indices. The computational time of the proposed methods is reduced via event-based sampling strategy. The effectiveness of the techniques is shown via a CD system from paper-making industry. Abstract: The effect of heat treatment on the structure, piezoelectricity and actuation behavior of cellulose electroactive-paper actuators was studied by infrared spectroscopy, piezoelectricity measurement and the tip displacement test. After heat treatment at 60°C for 2h, the piezoelectric coefficient (d 31) was enhanced nearly 10-fold as compared to that of non-heat-treated films. However, when the treatment temperature was raised above 60°C the piezoelectric coefficients were higher than the non-treated film but lower than that of film treated at 60°C. Infrared and UV–visible spectroscopy suggested that there were changes in chemical structure at higher treatment temperatures. Furthermore, the tip displacement tests performed on the actuators also showed almost same trend as that of the piezoelectric constant. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Herein, inspired by natural flytrap, a novel soft intelligent actuator is developed based on sense-drive-feedback integration in response to pressure stimuli. The actuator is fabricated using MXene/CNT paper to construct sensing and driving modules. In terms of actuation, the Joule heating effect and heterogeneous composites endow the device with large deformation under low-power consumption. As for sensing, highly conductive MXene/CNT paper contributes to superior sensitivity over a large linear range. Thereon, a portable soft tactile actuator is constructed to grasp and manipulate objects based on manual operation. Moreover, a soft petal actuator that mimics the feeding action of flytrap was prepared to actively sense and grasp external objects, where its weight and size can also be reflected in real time. Furthermore, integration of the actuators with human hands can enable its real-time control via bending the fingers. • A novel fault-tolerant controller has been developed for the attitude control of rigid spacecraft based on Q-learning. • This controller obviates the necessity for actuator fault data or extensive fault knowledge. • The controller stability analysis and controller implementation are discussed. This paper presents a novel active fault-tolerant control (FTC) scheme based on reinforcement learning (RL) for rigid spacecraft operating in challenging conditions with simultaneous actuator faults and external disturbances. Subsequently, an observer is designed to swiftly detect actuator faults, ensuring a timely response to fault occurrences. This paper studies the leader–follower consensus problem for nonlinear multi-agent systems with actuator saturation by adaptive event-triggered scheme. This adaptive mechanism allows parameters in triggered mechanism to change automatically compared to fixed ones in traditional strategies. The paper introduces two distinct approaches to address the issue of saturation. The first approach is sector bounded condition, while the second relies on convex hull representation. Compared with the former one, the latter one can reduce the conservatism of controller design effectively. This paper investigates the fault-tolerant attitude control problem for a spacecraft with actuator faults using an event-triggered-based concurrent-learning control (CLC) approach. A concurrent-learning controller, updating itself through previous control signal values to generate the current control signal, is studied in this paper. The concurrent-learning controller is designed under an event-triggered policy to compensate for the actuator's data transmission constraints caused by bandwidth limit. In addition, a robust fault observer is designed to facilitate the concurrent-learning controller in compensating for the actuator faults. This paper proposes a new adaptive super-twisting global integral terminal sliding mode control algorithm for the trajectory tracking of autonomous robotic manipulators with uncertain parameters, unknown disturbances, and actuator faults. Firstly, a novel global integral terminal sliding mode surface is designed to ensure that the tracking errors of autonomous robotic manipulators converge to zero in finite time and the global robustness of the system is also enhanced. Then a new adaptive method is devised to deal with the adverse effect of nonlinear uncertainty. This paper investigates the attack estimation and state reconstruction problem for linear cyber–physical systems with state delay and simultaneous sensor and actuator attacks. Reduced-order observer is designed for the augmented system to simultaneously estimate the actuator attack, sensor attack and the state of system. By adopting the double integral term into the Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional and decomposing the cross term, the delay-dependent results are obtained. The method proposed in this paper can accurately estimate the state, actuator and sensor attacks simultaneously without additional design. This paper proposed a prediction algorithm for the degraded actuator taking into account the impact of estimation error of hidden index in the closed-loop system. To this end, a unified prediction framework is established to evaluate the hidden degradation information and recursively update the degradation model parameters simultaneously. The advantage is that the prediction framework can comprehensively compensate the estimation error of hidden degradation index caused by system uncertainty. To jointly estimate the degradation information in avoidance of the impact of system uncertainty, a modified adaptive Kalman filter is designed, and the proof of stability is provided. With the priori estimate from the filter, the degradation model parameters are updated by the inverse filtering probability based on Bayes' theorem. This paper proposes a novel sliding mode control (SMC) algorithm for direct yaw moment control of four-wheel independent drive electric vehicles (FWID-EVs). The algorithm integrates adaptive law theory, fractional-order theory, and nonsingular terminal sliding mode reaching law theory to reduce chattering, handle uncertainty, and avoid singularities in the SMC system. A sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method is also proposed to optimize the yaw moment distribution under actuator constraints. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by a hardware-in-the-loop test with two driving maneuvers and compared with two existing SMC-based schemes together with the cases with the change of vehicle parameters and disturbances. The paper discusses the dissipative control problem of nonlinear singularly perturbed systems (SPSs) with dynamic quantization and actuator failure. The nonlinear singularly perturbed plant is described by Takagi–Sugeno (T–S) fuzzy model. The dynamic quantizer is considered to realize the effective utilization of the limited network channel bandwidth resources, and the possible transmission failure between the controller and the actuator is also considered. Based on linear matrix inequalities, sufficient design conditions for the ϵ -independent state feedback controller are given such that the constructed quantized closed-loop system is asymptotically stable and satisfies a predefined dissipative performance. This paper studies the control problem for a continuous-time networked system with non-linearity in the state equation as well as in the input, as saturation. The system is considered under denial-of-service (DoS), attacks which cause the blockage of input and/or output components in the overall closed-loop model. An event-triggering scheme that is resilient in nature, along with an observer-based control, has been considered under DoS attacks. The resultant scheme ensures efficient network resources and excludes Zeno behavior naturally due to the presence of a minimum positive interevent delay. Then, an event-based switched non-linear model is presented to address both the event-triggering scheme and the presence of DoS blocking attacks. A piece-wise Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional method on the described non-linear model, resulting in the switched system, is considered for achieving an exponentially stable response by driving the required feasibility conditions. In the presence of a non-linear system with saturation in the actuator, the presented design establishes quantitative relationships among the exponential decay rate, active/sleeping intervals of attacks, parameters of the event-triggering condition, and sampling period of the system. After that, linear matrix inequalities are presented for designing an event-triggered controller with an observer, while the design also includes the region of convergence for dealing with the input non-linearity. Finally, comparative results for an offshore structure model with non-linearity in states as well as in actuator, are demonstrated to verify the results of the control scheme that is developed. It has been verified that our design is less conservative than the previous designs, and can handle the non-linearities in the dynamics of plant and actuator saturation more efficiently, while DoS attacks are also present. The problem of retargeting rigid body attitude with attitude constraints has been extensively investigated, whereas the challenge persists in maneuvering rigid-body attitude with multiple concurrent attitude constraints and finite sequential actuator faults. Finite sequential actuator faults, which can reduce controllability or destabilize the system, necessitate the implementation of fault-tolerant control strategies. Therefore, this paper aims to address the issue of redirecting spacecraft attitude subject to multiple attitude constraints and finite sequential actuator faults comprehensively. Firstly, we represent spacecraft attitude using unit quaternions and employ an artificial potential function to effectively handle multi-attitude constraints. The negative gradient direction guides the rigid-body spacecraft towards seamless convergence with the desired attitude. Our proposed unwinding strategy effectively avoids unwinding phenomena during large-angle spacecraft reorientation as well. Additionally, we design an adaptive compensation strategy for finite sequential actuator faults that enables real-time calculation of the fault compensation matrix under such actuator faults. In this paper, a distributed bearing-based formation control scheme with finite-time convergency is proposed for multiple underactuated surface vessels (USVs). By virtue of the guide point-based model transformation method, the dimension of underactuated tracking error dynamics can be reduced from three to two. This allows us to convert the actuator model to a fully form that matches dimension-reduced tracking error dynamics. Further, to reduce the computation complexity, a finite-time recruited filter is designed according to first-order Levant differentiator. At meanwhile, auxiliary error compensation signals are introduced to address unknowns stemming from filter process and system dynamics. Variable stiffness actuators (VSAs) are essential for ensuring safe human–robot interactions in robotic applications. This paper proposes a novel rotary VSA using an antagonistic Hoberman linkage mechanism (AHLM), which offers a large stiffness range and a compact structure. The VSA-AHLM consists of two sets of antagonistic-type quadratic springs based on spiral cams connected to the Hoberman linkage mechanism (HLM) through four cables. By simultaneously adjusting both the radius of the HLM and the spring preload, the stiffness of the VSA-AHLM can be varied within a large range. Furthermore, the position and stiffness of the VSA-AHLM can be controlled independently by two rotary motors. The geometric parameters of the spiral cam are determined to achieve the desired linear stiffness–elongation behavior of a quadratic spring, and detailed models of the actuator's stiffness, elastic energy, and torque are established. An actuator prototype is fabricated to demonstrate the proposed variable stiffness approach. • A fixed-time disturbance observer is proposed under the event-triggered technique to provide an attenuation effect on multi-source disturbances such as exogenous disturbances, system uncertainties, actuator faults, periodic vibrations and uncertain modeled disturbance of actuator, and input saturation. • Propose a fault-tolerant fixed-time controller to track the attitude of spacecraft under multi-source disturbances and limited communication framework. This paper mainly addresses the practical consensus problem of nonlinear multi-agent systems modeled by reaction–diffusion equations subject to the bounded external disturbances. Different from the existing consensus control methods associated with spatiotemporal dynamics, the proposed H ∞ Neumann boundary controller based on distributed measurement data can guarantee the optimal disturbance attenuation performance under the actuator saturation. Initially, a consensus spatiotemporal error model is constructed by introducing the Kronecker product and equivalent directed graph. Subsequently, a linear matrix inequalities (LMIs)-based sufficient condition is derived by combining the improved Lyapunov-based approach and H ∞ norm. It is the first report about fault-tolerant-based prescribed performance control of switched nonlinear systems under multiple faults. The concerned faults include not only external faults but also actuator faults. In the process of backstepping control design, prescribed performance control is fully considered, and the combination of unknown nonlinear functions is estimated by multi-dimensional Taylor network. This paper investigates the fault-tolerant prescribed performance control problem for a class of multiple-input single-output unknown nonlinear systems subject to process faults and actuator failures. In contrast to the related works, we consider a general class of nonlinear systems with both multiplicative nonlinearities and additive nonlinearities corrupted by the process faults; only the boundedness of the process faults and the continuity of the nonlinear functions are required, without the explicit or fixed structures of the fault functions. To conquer this problem, a less-demanding and low-complexity fault-tolerant prescribed performance control approach is proposed. The controller is independent of the specific information of faults or the system model and does not invoke fault diagnosis or neural/fuzzy approximation to acquire such knowledge. The stability and drivability of distributed drive electric vehicles over split-friction regions and with actuator faults are studied in this paper by using control allocation. Under the integrated control architecture of high-, medium-, and low-level controllers, a slip-ratio-based synchronization approach is presented to redistribute the driving force for all the driving wheels. The synchronization of slip ratios on wheels is accomplished by autonomously regulating the distribution parameters in the design of a low-level controller. Therefore, the driving force and moment can be adjusted from the design of the regulator on distribution parameters so that the stability and driving performance are ensured when electric vehicles drive over split-friction regions. Subsequently, the concept of distribution parameters is extended to handle actuator faults in electric vehicles by regulating the driving force via the adjustment of distribution parameters. The proportional fault, additive fault, and motor saturation are considered in this paper by compensating for the loss of driving force from the force allocation approach. The design of robust state- and output-feedback control for uncertain discrete-time systems with physical magnitude and rate constraints on their actuator dynamics was addressed. Unlike the traditional methods such as anti-windup (AW) methods, nested ellipsoids, model predictive controllers (MPCs) and integral quadratic constraints(IQCs) formulated by sector bounded inequalities, this paper uses a transformation of the system dynamics to a form which considers control signal and its rate as controlled outputs and using discrete-time ℓ ∞ induced (peak-to-peak) norm from disturbance inputs to these outputs. To cope with the magnitude and rate bound non-linearities together, the induced ℓ ∞ norm from disturbance input to the outputs involving control signal and its rate is utilised. On the other hand, discrete-time(DT) induced ℓ 2 norm from disturbance input to the main controlled output is used to mitigate the effects of disturbances. We can tackle this ambitious non-linear control problem in the domain of linear convex multi-objective optimal control problem, which can be solved by effective semi-definite optimisation methods by using the proposed transformation and handling the control constraints in terms of worst case peak-to-peak gain of the system. Extended Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) and full block S-procedure based design conditions developed over Linear Fractional Representation(LFR) framework allow the user to obtain robust state- and output-feedback control solutions with reduced conservatism. For the first time, this paper introduces an extended LMI based robust output-feedback control design for magnitude and rate bounded (MRB) systems, using full block S-procedure. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed controller through several simulations over benchmark examples covering systems having multi-variable structures and uncertainties. This manuscript discusses the positional systems used in intelligent robots. One of the characteristic problems that arise in such systems is associated with friction, including sticking during the process. Friction greatly affects the positioning accuracy of the actuators of controlled robots, especially if a pneumatic actuator is used as a motor. The work is devoted to the study and solution of this problem. Since it is impossible to completely eliminate the effect of friction, ways to minimize this effect are being investigated using a targeted choice of system parameters. For this purpose, the method of multicriteria optimization of a detailed mathematical model is applied on the example of a pneumatic positional system, as the most sensitive to friction. The paper considers the first stage of optimization associated with visualization and preliminary analysis of the process in order to prepare it for performing a system procedure. The dynamics equations of an intelligent positional system are written out, both in full-size and dimensionless one. The most convenient mathematical model of friction is presented terms of its use in the process of optimizing the entire control system. A procedure for visualizing the optimization process in the form of a graphical interface has been developed. The joint state and actuator fault estimation problem is investigated in this paper for a type of networked systems subject to loss of the actuator effectiveness (LAE). A so-called improved accumulation-based event-triggered mechanism (ETM) is used to regulate the transmission of signals between the sensors and the estimator for the purpose of communication resource saving. Compared with the traditional ETM schemes, such accumulation-based ETM is robust against the "undesired" abrupt changes of signals (which would occur due to certain big noises). Different from the integral-based ETM for continuous-time systems, the improved accumulation-based ETM proposed in this paper is a "weighted" ETM, where a given weight coefficient is employed to "balance" the weights of output measurements in different time instants. The multiplicative LAE is described by an unknown diagonal matrix. The object of this paper is to design a remote estimator such that both the fault signals and system states can be simultaneously estimated in the sense of minimizing an upper bound of the corresponding estimation error covariance at each sampling instant. First, the upper bound of the estimation error covariance is given by means of the induction method. Then, the desired estimator gain is calculated recursively by solving two sets of coupled matrix equations. This paper investigates the attitude coordination control issue for spacecraft formation flying in the presence of actuator saturation and external disturbances with unknown boundaries. Firstly, a super-twisting integral terminal sliding mode surface is developed, which ensures that the sliding mode surface and its first-time derivative converge to zero in finite time. Then, based on the developed sliding mode surface and adaptive technique, a robust anti-saturation distributed attitude coordination controller that enables the attitude and angular velocity to precisely track the desired time-varying command in finite time is devised under the undirected communication topology. The Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) procedure for corneal transplantation is challenging due to the need to unscroll the donor graft within the recipient's eye. This process of unscrolling is complex, time-consuming, leads to a loss of endothelial cells and, most importantly, can negatively impact the graft's adhesion and integration with the host tissue after surgery. This problem is particularly evident when the graft is young. However, the physics behind this scrolling is not well understood, and therefore no sustainable solution is attained. Here, we propose that the concentration gradient of the medium used during transplant leads to a displacement gradient across the graft thickness, resulting in an out-of-plane folding or scrolling of the graft tissue. Using chitosan bilayer-based experimental models, it is experimentally demonstrated that this diffusion-coupled-deformation phenomenon can successfully explain why younger donor grafts tend to scroll tighter than older ones. Most importantly, we illustrate here through experiments that the medium can be engineered to reduce the scroll tightness and thus reduce the surgical inconveniences and improve post-transplant recovery. This paper addresses a major issue that surgeons face while doing Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) in unscrolling grafts during the graft insertion procedure. The currently used tapping method to unscroll the graft inside the patient's eye significantly reduces endothelial cell count, thus affecting its lifetime. Surprisingly, the physics behind graft scrolling is not well understood, so no sustainable solutions are proposed by the medical community. The electrohydrodynamic (EHD) actuator system, which produces thrust by ionizing a gas and accelerating it, is a novel propulsion system for near space vehicles. In this paper, an analytical model for EHD actuators, called EHD-AM, has been presented to estimate the thrust produced by the actuators in a wire-to-cylinder configuration. Experimental data from six previous studies have been used to validate the model and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) between each configuration and EHD-AM has been calculated under different environmental conditions. Based on the evaluations, the MAPE between EHD-AM and the experimental results for different pressures and wire-to-airfoil structures is 7.18% and 6.16%, respectively. The MAPE between EHD-AM and the experimental data measured by particle image velocimetry (PIV) method and with conventional experimental setups is 10.59% and 6.76%, respectively. Based on the EHD-AM, at a constant voltage, the relation between thrust and pressure has a local minimum and a local maximum point in the range of 0.05–1 atm. From 0.05 atm to 0.5 atm, as the pressure increases, the thrust decreases and then increases. As the pressure increases from 0.5 to 1 atm, the thrust decreases. In addition, a higher voltage can result in a higher pressure at which thrust is maximized. Furthermore, the generated thrust is monotonically increasing as the voltage amplitude increases. By implementation of EHD-AM thrust scale in a simple numerical model, the thrust generated by the actuator has been computed and simulated numerically. Initially, the numerical model was verified using experimental results from a previous study. The MAPE between the numerical model and the EHD-AM is 24.08%. Finally, when the interelectrode gap, the collector radius and the emitter radius are relatively large, the thrust of the actuator is predicted by EHD-AM and compared with the numerical results. This paper presents an optimization design method for a two-dimensional (2D) modified repetitive control system (MRCS) with an anti-windup compensator. Using lifting technology, a 2D hybrid model of the MRCS considering actuator saturation is established to describe the control and learning of the repetitive control. A linear-matrix-inequality (LMI)-based sufficient condition is derived to ensure the stability of the MRCS. Two tuning parameters, the selection of which is critical to the system design, are used in the LMI to adjust the control and learning, and hence the reference-tracking performance. A new cost function, developed through time domain analysis, directly evaluates the control performance of the system without calculating control errors, thus reducing the optimization time. Based on this cost function, an adaptive multi-population particle swarm optimization algorithm is presented to select an optimal pair of tuning parameters in which multiple populations cooperatively search in non-intersecting search intervals. An anti-windup term is added between the low-pass filter and the time delay in the modified repetitive controller to mitigate the undesirable effect of actuator saturation on system performance and stability. In this paper, a novel observer-based prescribed performance finite-time dynamic event-triggered consensus controller is investigated for multi-agent systems with external disturbances, actuator faults, model uncertainties, and limited communication. Different from existing dynamic event-triggered control schemes, here a dynamic event-triggered strategy that can be applied to multiple communication channels simultaneously is proposed, which further extends the advantages of event-triggered control. In this context, three issues are the main research directions of this paper. First, a controller that does not need to be constantly updated according to the real-time estimate of the disturbance is designed. Second, a controller that guarantees the tracking errors remain in a prescribed region without continuous updates is proposed. Third, a dynamic triggering condition that will not fail under the background of the actual engineering period sampling is proposed. As a major obstacle to high performance milling, chatter will inevitably decrease tool life, material removal efficiency and workpiece surface quality. Active control based on actuators for chatter suppression has been developed for a long time. However, in traditional active control, the feedback signals are usually time domain vibration signals, which will mitigate both chatter frequencies and normal frequencies, including rotation frequency and its frequency multiplications. In fact, rotation frequency and its frequency multiplications belong to normal cutting phenomenon, which don't need to be suppressed. Therefore, in traditional control strategies, more energy is wasted due to normal frequencies, which cannot obtain the optimal performance and causes the saturation effect of actuators. In order to solve this problem, this paper realized milling chatter suppression based on the adaptive vibration reshaping, which can precisely modify and control the milling vibration frequencies in frequency domain. Hence, the required control forces provided by actuators will decrease a lot, which can optimize the actuator performance and alleviate the saturation effect. Simulation results show that the adaptive vibration reshaping can suppress chatter frequencies effectively without changing rotation frequency and its frequency multiplications, which satisfies the initial control requirement for optimization of actuator performance. Besides, the convergence analysis, the noise resistance performance analysis, the control delay analysis and the chatter frequencies identification errors analysis are also presented for better facilitation to milling chatter suppression. Finally, contrastive milling tests are implemented on a three-axis milling machine. The appearance of limit cycle oscillations in control systems with fixed threshold based samplers degrades the performance of the control loop, accelerates the wear out of actuators, and introduces an unnecessary communication overhead in distributed control systems. In this paper, the role of the input signals to the control loop is taken into account when analyzing the existence of limit cycles induced by fixed threshold samplers. With this analysis, a methodology to re-tune PID controllers while running to avoid limit cycle oscillations generated by ramp-like excitation signals is presented. Spacecraft attitude control employs quaternion representation to avoid singularity issues and obtain global maneuver stability. However, it has redundancy associated, resulting in dual equilibrium points. The attitude control may confront the unwinding phenomenon due to the presence of the equilibria. In this paper, an anti-unwinding controller for spacecraft stabilization in the presence of external disturbances and inertial uncertainties, angular velocity limit, actuator saturation and faults is presented. Specifically, a modified extended state observer (ESO) is designed to obtain total disturbance estimates of the rigid-body spacecraft. Auxiliary parameters are added in the design to avoid initial high estimates in the proposed ESO design resulting in faster convergence. The proposed disturbance observer is to release the assumption that requires the estimated disturbance to be constant or varying at slow rates. Using the ESO estimates, a particular back-stepping-SMC (ESO-BTSMC) controller is devised to formulate anti-unwinding control law for spacecraft stabilization. Lyapunov stability theory is employed to prove closed-loop stability of system and estimation error convergence. Comparative simulations are performed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed control scheme. This paper investigates the attitude fault-tolerant stabilization problem for a spacecraft subjected to its actuator effectiveness loss, inertia uncertainties and space disturbances. A novel Iterative Learning Sliding Mode Observer (ILSMO) is proposed to reconstruct the actuator effectiveness factors robustly and accurately by combining the P-type iterative learning algorithm with the sliding mode approach. Based on the reconstructed fault signals, an Iterative Learning Sliding Mode Controller (ILSMC) is designed to guarantee the closed-loop spacecraft attitude fault-tolerant stabilization by compensating for its lumped disturbance. Undetected partial actuator faults on multi-rotor UAVs can lead to system failures and uncontrolled crashes, necessitating the development of accurate and efficient fault detection and isolation (FDI) strategy. This paper proposes a hybrid FDI model for a quadrotor UAV that integrates an extreme learning neuro-fuzzy algorithm with a model-based extended Kalman filter (EKF). Three FDI models using Fuzzy-ELM, R-EL-ANFIS, and EL-ANFIS are compared based on training, validation performances, and sensitivity to weaker and shorter actuator faults. They are also tested online for linear and nonlinear incipient faults by measuring their isolation time delays and accuracies. The issue of strictly exponential dissipation stability for the interval type-2 fuzzy semi-Markov jump systems is investigated. A quantized method is proposed to cope with uncertainties, actuator failures, time-varying delay and nonlinear disturbance of the system. To avoid the waste of network resources, the mode-dependent event-triggered mechanism with particular threshold parameters is used to screen the conveyed signal. Due to that the premise variables and the modes tend to be mismatched between the system and the controller, a novel double asynchronous controller is proposed. The quantized control problem for a heavy-lift launch vehicle (HLV) under actuator faults and rate gyro malfunctions is addressed in this paper. A predefined-time observer (PTO) is designed to reconstruct the immeasurable time derivative of attitude tracking errors with the settling time precisely predefined by one design parameter. Thus, parameter tuning for temporal demands is more straightforward and less conservative for the PTO than for fixed-time observers. Using the reconstructed state, a quantized controller is developed to render attitude tracking errors to a small neighborhood of the origin within a predefined time interval (physically realizable) under actuator faults. The controller has three characteristics (1) An unswitched singularity-avoidance layer is derived to ensure the boundedness of control signals. (2) A hysteresis quantizer is used to discretize control signals for applications on the digital onboard platform and reduce communication burden. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) show broad application prospects in the area of soft robots since they offer merits of fast response, large deformation, light weight and high energy conversion efficiency. Practical soft robot applications would usually require the study on the modeling and control of the DEA. However, the DEA has a memory property, which results in a highly nonlinear characteristics, bringing difficulties to the subject. To address this issue, an effective strategy is the utilization of the fractional order model, which is a type of modeling approach that can accurately characterize the memory property of a material with a small amount of parameters. Meanwhile, the fractional order controller can better handler the memory property, and it owns a better flexibility than traditional integer order controllers. With the above considerations, this paper proposes a modeling strategy and a tracking control strategy for the DEA on the basis of the fractional calculus. In the proposed strategy, a fractional order model is established to characterize the complicated nonlinear characteristics of the DEA. Then, to facilitate the computer simulation, the Oustaloup filter is used to construct an integer order approximation model (IOAM) of the fractional order model. Since the IOAM is difficult to be employed in the system controller design due to its high order, the IOAM is further simplified into a reduced order model based on the square root balance truncation algorithm. To realize the high accuracy control of the DEA, a feedforward-feedback combined controller is devised, which is composed of a feedforward controller and a fractional order proportional integral feedback controller (FOPIFC). Among which, the feedforward controller is devised based on the analytical inverse of the reduced order model to compensate the complicated nonlinear characteristics of the DEA, and the FOPIFC is devised to handle the bad influence from the modeling error and uncertainties on the control performance. Friction force plays an important role in motion control systems. Research shows that friction force is strongly nonlinear in most applications. And the nonlinear friction force has great influence on control performance, especially in motion control systems of hydraulic actuators. To improve control performance, many model-based controllers have been developed. In the past years, LuGre model has been widely used in most hydraulic actuators. However, for systems with one-way seals whose friction force is asymmetric between instroke and outstroke stage, LuGre model is no longer suitable. The paper developed a friction force test bench and studied the transient friction force of a hydraulic actuator which includes one-way seals. Experiment results show that friction force at instroke stage is bigger than that of outstroke stage for the variable valve actuator. Based on the experiment results, a bristle direction hypothesis is proposed. The bristle of the friction surface is thought to have an initial direction. For actuators with two-way seals or without seals, the bristle is thought to be perpendicular to the friction surface. And for actuators with one-way seals, the angle between bristles and friction surface is not 90° anymore. To apply the bristle direction hypothesis to controllers, a bristle direction coefficient is introduced to LuGre model to explain asymmetric friction behaviors. The simulation results have good agreements with experiment results. Based on the improved LuGre model, a backstepping controller is developed to compensate the nonlinear friction force. The friction force and system matched uncertainty are estimated by an extended state observer. Finally, some comparative experiments are implemented to verify the advantages of the improved LuGre model. The experiment results show that the improved LuGre model can help to reduce the engine valve lift tracking errors. This paper develops a Neural Network (NN) event-triggered finite-time consensus control method for uncertain nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems (MASs) with dead-zone input and actuator failures. In practical applications, actuator failures would inevitably arise in MASs. And the time, pattern, and value of the failures are unknown. Besides, the actuators of MASs also suffer from dead-zone nonlinearity. No matter actuator failures or dead-zone input would dramatically affect the performance and stability of MASs. To address these issues, finite-time adaptive controllers capable of simultaneously compensating for actuator failures and dead-zone input are constructed by adopting the backstepping technology. Meanwhile, the NN control scheme is adopted to handle the unknown nonlinear dynamics of each agent. Furthermore, an event-triggered control mechanism is established that no longer requires continuous communication on the control network. Under the proposed control method, all followers achieve finite-time synchronization, irrespective of the presence of limited bandwidth, unknown failures, and dead-zone input. In this paper, we study the adaptive fixed-time consensus control for stochastic multi-agent systems (SMASs) with uncertain actuator faults. Firstly, a fully distributed adaptive consensus protocol and an adaptive fault-tolerant consensus protocol are proposed, respectively, to ensure that the fixed-time consensus of SMASs with actuator faults can be reached. The current paper aims to model the uncertainties of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell system and control its main parameters, such as compressor speed and oxygen excess ratio, in the presence of external disturbances and actuator saturation using the improved controller, which is designed based on the sum of squares relaxation for nonlinear models. The open-loop nonlinear system is considered in state-dependent polynomial equations. The state feedback method is used to obtain the appropriate control responses. To numerically solve the state-dependent Linear Matrix Inequalities, semi-definite programming based on the sum of squares decomposition is also used. First, the transient response of the system is improved in the design phase of the controller. Then, the actuator saturation problem of PEMFC is considered for the state feedback controller proposed in polynomial systems, and the obtained results are expanded for the uncertain system. Results are also validated in the presence of external disturbances. The results are compared with those of the robust and adaptive control methods. The proposed controller not only has good agreement with the results of robust and adaptive control methods but also outperforms the previous controllers in terms of accuracy, rise time, fluctuation, and overshoot. A novel fault diagnosis procedure is proposed in this paper to estimate faults using a linear parameter varying (LPV) model whose scheduling parameters depend on the fault. A wrong determination of the operating conditions could lead the system to an undesired performance or even to an unstable situation, when classical fault diagnosis approaches are applied. This paper addresses this issue by formulating fault diagnosis as a dynamic optimization problem, solved by using a novel hybrid technique that combines a Luenberger-based observer with artificial intelligent (AI) optimization-based algorithms. The observer supervises the health of the system, while AI-based algorithms are able to reconstruct the faulty signal in real-time when the observer determines that the system is under a fault. The efficiency of the proposed fault diagnosis scheme, the three AI-based algorithms based on artificial bee colony and particle swarm optimization, and the gradient-based algorithm developed in this paper, are assessed using a numerical example. This paper presents the design and development of a new granite hardware-in-the-loop air-bearing testbed that can emulate the relative dynamics of orbiting spacecraft. The air-bearing testbed's granite slab is supported via a fixed post and two mechanically adjustable screw actuators that allow the table's surface to change in orientation. The surface can actuate in two axes: pitch and roll. As the table tilts, the Earth's gravitational acceleration affects the acceleration experienced by a floating test vehicle operating on its surface without the need to activate the vehicle's on-board thrusters. Thus, the testbed emulates the relative orbital dynamics between two orbiting spacecraft, instead of the planar zero-g conditions provided by most granite table facilities. In this paper, a finite-time active fault-tolerant control scheme is designed for a flexible spacecraft's attitude control experiencing inertial parametric variations, external disturbances, multiple actuator faults, and estimation errors while suppressing the flexible appendages' vibrations without using smart vibration suppression actuators. First, relative attitude dynamics of a flexible spacecraft with multiple actuator faults are outlined, and a sliding mode observer is designed to estimate flexible appendages-related vibrations. The proposed fault detection and identification (FDI) strategy can efficiently detect actuator faults, avoiding the false alarms caused by uncertainties and disturbances, and accurately estimate the cumulative fault effects on the spacecraft via Chebyshev neural network (CNN) based estimator. Based on a novel fast nonsingular terminal sliding mode surface, a finite-time, unwinding-free, and adaptive fault-tolerant attitude controller is designed to acclimatize the detected faults and uncertainties effectively, also heeding the errors in the estimation of flexible modes and faults. The spacecraft can carry out the coveted control objective in a definable time, and the stability of the proposed controller is corroborated via Lyapunov techniques. This paper considers the data-driven fault isolation and estimation problem for linear time-invariant systems with unknown dynamic matrices and multiple actuator faults. In most of existing fault isolation methods, how to accurately identify the types of faults has not been solved well when the system matrices are unknown. To deal with this problem, a neural network-based fault isolation method is proposed by analyzing and extracting features of different fault models in terms of constructing sparse vectors and function libraries using the available input–output data. Then, a fault estimator is designed to estimate the fault signals within the data-driven framework, where its parameters are computed by the system's Markov parameters and the identified types of faults. This paper designs a fuzzy adaptive control approach for the Continuous Stirred Tank Reactors (CSTRs) with full state constraints and actuator faults. Using the backstepping design technique and Integral barrier Lyapunov function (IBLF), the full state constraints are handled in the design process of the adaptive controller. Besides, there exist unknown internal dynamics in the CSTRs system, which are identified by the fuzzy logic system. It is shown that the constraints are not overstepped and the CSTRs operate reliably is ensured, despite the presence of system nonlinearities, stuck faults and loss of control effectiveness. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, the proposed approach can ensure that all the signals of the CSTRs system are globally bounded. In 2017, Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin) has launched the first space-rated fluid-dynamic actuator (FDA) on the TechnoSat mission. This type of actuator is unique with respect to its dynamic properties, as it offers a very high torque but limited angular momentum storage capabilities in comparison to reaction wheels (RWs). In combination with the tetrahedron RW assembly featured on the spacecraft, a unique combination of attitude control actuators has been formed. The spacecraft axis parallel to the FDA is over-actuated, featuring control actuators of contrasting nature which offers novel options in terms of spacecraft operations. However, with the camera axis on TechnoSat being aligned parallel to the actuator's axis of rotation, there is limited operational use to this setup. In July 2019, TU Berlin launched Berlin Experimental and Educational Satellite 9 (BEESAT-9) – the first CubeSat featuring a set of three orthogonal RWs and a single picosatellite fluid-dynamic actuator (pFDA) for attitude control. The camera axis of BEESAT-9 is perpendicular to the actuator axis, and therefore allows the demonstration of the proposed novel modes of operation. Among the proposed modes is an artificial increase of the swath and the acquisition of stereo images of multiple, successive targets on the ground. Crucial to these operation scenarios is the control allocation between the RW assembly and the single pFDA. This paper first introduces the spacecraft and describes the proposed novel modes of operation that are enabled by the actuator combination realized on BEESAT-9, followed by a review of the state of the art of control allocation for over-actuated spacecraft. The main part of the paper comprises a description of the implementation of the dynamics models of the attitude control actuators and spacecraft, followed by a description of the implemented high-level control laws and control allocation methods.
