With the surging energy price and environmental concerns, measures to improve energy efficiency have attracted increasing concerns of the manufacture sector, especially energy-intensive manufacturing industries such as tissue paper mills. Energy-efficiency scheduling, as a novel energy-efficient method, has attracted the attention of an increasing number of researchers in recent years. Drying process is the most energy-intensive production process in tissue paper mills, which has a great energy-saving potential. This paper aims to reduce the energy costs for the tissue paper mill, consisting of processing energy cost and set-up energy cost, through integrating drying process optimization with energy-efficient scheduling. First, the energy cost model and the scheduling model were built. Then, the energy cost of the drying process of every job in a given scheduling problem was optimized using particle swarm optimization (PSO). Afterwards, the energy cost was further optimized using energy-efficiency scheduling. In addition, a hybrid non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) was utilized to solve the energy-efficiency scheduling problem. Finally, several real scheduling problems from a real tissue paper mill were addressed using the proposed approach to demonstrate its effectiveness in energy saving. The experiment result showed that there is a great energy-saving potential in the drying process, accounting for up to 12.53% of the total energy consumption. Moreover, the maximum energy saving ratio of the proposed approach could reach 9.03%. The pulp and paper industry accounts for approximately 5% of total industrial energy consumption and contributes 2% of direct carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions from industries. World paper and paperboard demand and production are increasing significantly, leading to an increase in this sector's energy use and CO 2 emissions. Although current studies identify a wide range of energy-efficiency technologies that have already been commercialized for the pulp and paper industry, information is limited or scattered regarding new energy-efficiency technologies that are not yet fully commercialized. Development of emerging or advanced energy-efficiency technologies and their deployment in the market will be crucial for this industry's mid- and long-term energy saving and climate change mitigation strategies. This paper compiles available information on energy savings, environmental and other benefits, costs, and commercialization status for 25 emerging technologies to reduce the energy use and CO 2 emissions. The purpose is to provide a well-structured comprehensive review on these emerging energy-efficiency technologies for engineers, researchers, investors, policy makers, pulp and/or paper companies, and other interested parties. This paper estimated the cost curve of energy saving and CO 2 emissions reduction in China's iron and steel sector. Forty-one energy saving technologies which are widely used or popularized are selected, their investments, operation costs, energy savings and CO 2 abatement are collected and the data in 2010 are taken as a baseline. Then energy conservation supply curve and CO 2 conservation supply curve under two different discount rates are calculated in the paper. These 41 technologies result in a saving contribution of 4.63 GJ/t and a CO 2 abatement contribution of 443.21 kg/t. Cost-effectiveness of technologies was analyzed based on the fuel price and an estimated CO 2 price. When comparing the result with the promoted technologies during the 12 th five-year-plan, we found that some promoted technologies are not cost-effective in current situation. Three scenarios are set through changing the diffusion rate of technologies and the share of BOF and EAF, based on this energy saving potentials of technologies in 2020 and 2030 are forecasted. Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between the number and energy consumption of devices in the course video construction system, the relations between the functions and power consumption of the devices, the mode of pioneering traditional construction, and the energy consumption of recording and broadcasting systems. It also presents a scheme for constructing course video resource systems by defining the functional requirements on the basis of the purpose that the systems are intended to serve. Moreover, this paper proposes identifying energy-saving measures in the functional setting of constructed systems. An integrated energy-saving course video resource construction system has been developed (a Chinese patent, No. ZL 2011 2 0015694.8, has been obtained), and data are used to illustrate the energy-saving results of the integrated energy-saving video resource construction system in comparison with existing systems. On this basis, further energy-saving measures are recommended to the integrated system. Such measures include the energy-saving techniques of activating the monitor from the standby mode upon touching the handle, monitoring traffic in the hard disk recorder, and using an energy-saving management chip to improve the working efficiency of the switch power supply. Abstract: The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (KEPCO) has developed energy efficient chemical absorbents and economical processes which aim to reduce the cost of CO2 capture, in collaboration with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI). Together the companies have been developing and critically testing high efficiency, economical absorbents according to the latest absorbent development procedures and process simulation for CO2 capture processes. This work has been ongoing since 1991, using several Japan based R&D facilities and a pilot plant, used to verify improvements, located at Nanko Power Station in Osaka, Japan. Following significant testing of a range of absorbents in the mid 1990s, KS-1TM, KS-2 and KS-3 were developed. Based on subsequent rigorous evaluation of the three solvents, KS-1TM was selected for commercialization because of its overall technical and economical merits. During long-term pilot plant testing, the improved absorbents demonstrated superior performance in relation to the regeneration energy requirements leading to the following results: 2.94 MJlkg- CO2 in combination with KS-1TM” and the Kansai Mitsubishi Carbon Dioxide Recovery (KM-CDR ProcessTM) commercial process. In addition, practical, commercially applicable improved absorbent properties such as low corrosiveness and low solvent consumption were also confirmed. KEPCO and MHI continue development work in this area and the current status is summarized as follows: The highly successful R&D phase has led to the commercial deployment of CO2 capture technology and seven (7) commercial CO2 capture plants are currently under operation, with a maximum CO2 capture capacity of 450 metric tons per day (tpd). These commercial plants are deployed in the chemical and fertilizer industry, where the operational performance is assisting in the improved development of R&D concepts. Two (2) further commercial plants are under construction, with commissioning expected in Q3 2010. For further cost reductions in relation to CO2 capture, recent work has focused on developing new energy efficient chemical absorbents and processes. Following modifications to the Nanko CO2 capture pilot plant a new “Energy Saving Process”, was developed, which leads to a greater than 10% steam consumption reduction over the MHI conventional process using KS-1TM absorbent. Additionally the same reduced steam consumption was recorded for tests using the KS-1TM absorbent. A thermal energy requirement of less than 2.5 MJ/kg- CO2 in combination with KS-1TM and the “New Energy Efficient Process” has been confirmed under the optimum operation condition of the CO2 capture process. In addition to select new absorbents which feature the best profile and fit to the actual operating condition, KEPCO and MHI have intensively evaluated vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) and reaction kinetics for a range of newly developed absorbents and their performance is presented in this paper. The above data was obtained using the Nanko CO2 capture pilot plant which operates under a natural gas fired boiler condition and we expect that the thermal energy requirement of coal fired boiler flue gas (with greater CO2 concentration condition) will be further reduced. KEPCO and MHI are continuing pilot tests for the “Energy Saving Process”, leading to the application of this new process in commercial CO2 capture plant design. This paper introduces and presents the current status of the KEPCO & MHI CO2 capture technology and concepts for future energy reduction improvements. The paper will also include test results in relation to newly developed absorbents, and the “New Energy Efficient Process”, which have enhanced the performance and reduced the associated energy penalty of the CO2 capture process. KEPCO and MHI are continuing the development of efficient absorbents and optimized processes, thus helping to facilitate the future wide scale deployment of CO2 capture technology as an effective counter measure against global warming. Abstract: This paper deals with the method of how to regenerate the potential energy for a hybrid hydraulic excavator (HHE). After studying the structure and working cycle of the HHE, two energy regeneration systems are considered. Then, the control strategy and parameter matching for the proposed energy regeneration system (ERS) are discussed. United simulations with AMEsim and MATLAB/simulink for the conventional control system and two ERSs are carried out in this paper. An estimated 41% of the total potential energy could be regenerated at the lowering of the boom in accumulator-motor-generator system while the recovery efficiency in the motor-generator system is only about 17%, and it is also shown that the accumulator-motor-generator energy regeneration system (AMGERS) features better speed control of the boom and response characteristics than the motor-generator energy regeneration system (MGERS), hence, the AMGERS is a good configuration for the HHE at present. The energy consumption in a multi-chiller system is very significant and its consumption will be increased by inappropriate operating of the chillers. Accordingly, the economic dispatch in multi-chiller systems becomes an important issue for saving energy. Such issue is known as optimal chiller loading, which is solved by applying different optimization methods. This study employs exchange market algorithm to obtain optimal set points of the economic dispatch problem on chiller plants, which is inspired by trading the shares on a stock market. Exchange market algorithm is proposed for solving continuous non-linear optimization problems and it is comprised of two searching and two absorbing operators. The decision variable of the optimal chiller loading is partial load ratio of each chiller and the objective function of the optimal chiller loading problem is minimizing the power consumption while satisfying the cooling demand. This paper adopts three case studies to evaluate the performance of exchange market algorithm and compares it with other optimization methods applied on the optimal chiller loading problem. Results show that exchange market algorithm is an efficient method for solving optimal chiller loading problem in chiller plants, and is adaptable for usage in air-conditioning systems. In addition, the comparison results show that the exchange market algorithm provides better solutions than previous optimization methods applied on the optimal chiller loading method in terms of convergence speed and total consumption of electrical energy. With the rapid development of Internet communication business, the issues related to the space, efficiency and energy consumption of data center are increasingly attracting more attentions. Because the modular air conditioning system has the advantages of quick construction, easy replication, rapid deployment, flexible scalability, high cooling efficiently, it has become a way to solve the bottleneck problem of traditional data center. In this paper, a data center being equipped with modular air conditioning system in Tianjin is taken as an example to analyze the energy and electricity saving and the characteristics of deployment by steps. Saving energy consumption of air-conditioning is essential to building energy conservation while satisfying the thermal comfort requirements of indoor environment. On the basis of human clothing adjustment behavior, a dynamic setting temperature (DST) that adapts to climate change was proposed in this paper, i.e. indoor air-conditioning setting temperature changes dynamically with outdoor air temperature; furthermore. A method was established to obtain the DST. The daily mean clothing insulation was predicted according to the historical temperature at first, then indoor thermal comfort temperature was calculated based on the variable clothing insulation, and finally the DST was determined. According to the value or range of predicted mean vote (0, -0.5~0.5, -1~+1) corresponding to the thermal comfort, three levels of DST were defined. The corresponding thermal acceptability rates were 95%, 90% and 73%, respectively. A simulation of DST was conducted in a public building in Changsha, China based on meteorological data of 2017. Three levels of DST ranges were obtained, varied from 20.1 to 27.8 °C in level I, 17.8 to 28.7 °C in level II and 15.4 to 29.7 °C in level III, respectively. The simulation results of operational air-conditioning energy consumption shows that the application of DST could save up to 65.5% of energy consumption compared with the traditional fixed setting temperature (FST), and the operational energy consumption decreased by 59.1% due to the application of level-III DST compared with level-I DST. In order to achieve greater energy sustainability, the European Union has begun the reform process of the energy policy. Two main lines have been raised: electricity generation with renewable energy and energy saving. The raising cost of energy makes indoor lighting techniques as one of the most important contributors for energy saving in most of the industrialized countries. Therefore, the history of indoor lighting is not exclusively linked to the development of new light sources, having impact on energy saving and sustainability. The aim of this paper was to study and analyse the evolution and milestones of indoor lighting from incandescent bulbs to the modern light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and organic lighting emitting diodes (OLED) going through intermediate milestones like fluorescent lamps (FL) and/or techniques in lighting induction lamps. As main conclusion of this review, it has been found that indoor lighting techniques with their energy efficiency have opened new perspectives for optimizing the energy conversion and this in turn will play a major role in people's quality of life and well-being. Building envelope thermal conduction is dominant in the cold regions, the thermal performance of the building envelope plays a very important role in reducing building energy consumption. In cold areas, the annual air conditioning heating energy consumption of public buildings, there are about 50% consumed by the heat transfer of building envelope. Therefore, the study on energy saving building envelope is very important. This paper start from the building shape coefficient and the heat transfer coefficient of the building envelope, using DEST energy simulation software to analyze the office building energy consumption. Choosing the typical cold B region Shenyang, establishing the Office model, analysis the influence of office building envelope heat transfer coefficient to indoor equipment energy consumption. Pointing out that the architectural design and planning should try to select the building bottom shape close to a circle or a square, and try to select middle-high-rise buildings to reduce building shape coefficient. Generally, in cold B region the heat transfer coefficient K≤0.5W/m 2 • K, the windows and roofs try to select low heat transfer coefficient material, by reducing the heat transfer coefficient to achieve an insulating effect. Environmental protection is one of the main concerns of the international community. Countries show meticulous attention to environmental issues by considering eco-efficiency. The eco-efficiency evaluation of countries is a complex and multidisciplinary topic. Data envelopment analysis has widely been applied to measure the eco-efficiency of organization for economic co-operation and development countries. In previous studies, energy inputs have not been contemplated. The subject becomes more important when there are non-discretionary factors. In this paper, the eco-efficiency of countries in the organization for economic co-operation and development is assessed given energy inputs, undesirable outputs, and non-discretionary factors. To this end, slack-based and range-adjusted measures are extended. Also, new environmental indices are introduced. The relationship between consumption of energy inputs and production of undesirable outputs can be addressed by two new environmental indices. Spearman correlation test indicates a direct and positive relationship between potential of energy saving and potential of undesirable output abatement. France, Germany, Luxemburg, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom are recognized as eco-efficient countries. South Korea and Italy have the highest and lowest potential for energy saving, respectively. Poland and Iceland are countries with the highest and lowest potential for undesirable output abatement, respectively. It can be concluded that countries producing high undesirable outputs may not operate eco-efficiently and thus have an extreme potential to save the optimum energy. Abstract: In this paper, an energy saving drive system with variable speed hydrostatic control for cutterhead drive of shield tunneling machine is presented. The mathematical models of electric motor link and pump controlled motor link are built. Power consumption and energy losses of each link through the whole drive system are analyzed. To compare with the conventional cutterhead hydraulic drive system, simulations and experiments are carried out concerning a test rig with the hydraulic loading system performing different working conditions. Base on a group of tunneling parameters in three typical types of soil layers and the characteristics similarities between the drive systems of model machine cutterhead and variable speed pump controlled motor, the energy saving effect and system efficiency improvement of the proposed cutterhead drive system compared with the system currently undergoing services are achieved finally, providing a promising drive technique with great potential of energy saving. Abstract: For various reasons, sustainability today is producing an important and interesting approach between architecture and the environment. This is taking place in forms and with different degrees of intensity. Within the challenges of energy crisis and climatic changes architects started to develop new approaches to address the quest of energy demands in buildings. One of these approaches is façade greening which started to take an important place in the last 10 years, it''s not considered a new innovation, where applying green facade is not a new concept; however it has not been approved as an energy saving method for the built environment. Vertical greening can provide a cooling potential on the building surface, which is very important during summer periods in hot climates. The cooling effect of green facades has also an impact on the inner climate in the building by preventing warming up the façade. Within this quest, this paper is focused on the analysis of the effect of green facades systems on the building temperature and addressing different types of green facades systems and their thermal effect. Abstract: The shading-type BIPV claddings can act as power generators as well as external shading devices and insulation panels. There is little available information about the impacts of orientations and inclinations on the combined energy effects of the shading-type BIPV claddings, including the power output of PV modules, the cooling load reduction of windows and concrete walls. It is worth studying the effects of different shading-type BIPV cladding designs on the total energy saving in order to maximize the system’s energy performance. By considering the meteorological conditions in Hong Kong, the energy effect of the shading-type BIPV claddings with different surface azimuth angles, in terms of electricity generation and cooling energy consumption reduction is analyzed in this paper. Abstract: Energy saving methods can be employed to reduce energy consumption in buildings, or improve indoor thermal conditions. An example of those methods is the use of permeable coverings, but there are other important parameters like thermal inertia. To understand and predict these energy saving procedures, one may employ different software resources. In the present paper a review of existing software resources is carried out, and, as a consequence of this review, HAM tools were selected to simulate the indoor environment of school buildings. Results show that parameters like thermal inertia can interfere in the solar heat gains, changing the building time constant. Other parameters, like air changes per hour or the use of permeable coverings, present a clear enhancement of indoor environment conditions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The impact of natural ventilation of a roof cavity on improvement of the thermal environment and reduction of cooling load of a factory building is discussed. A computer program was developed with the logic in a companion paper to observe the effect of cavity ventilation on the operative temperature of the occupied zone in the factory. Comparisons were made between factories with a cavity roof and a single roof in the Japanese climate. Results showed that the cavity roof was superior to the single roof in lowering the operative temperature by about 4.4°C. When the factory was air conditioned, the cooling load reduction reached approximately 50% during the summer to maintain an operative temperature of 26°C. Results showed that a naturally ventilated cavity roof has excellent potential for improving the indoor thermal environment and energy savings of factory buildings without complicated cooling installations and life time power consumption.
