Innovation and adaptation of renewable energy technologies significantly reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and increase energy efficiency. Understanding the convergence patterns in renewable energy innovation will enable policymakers to design policies to increase energy efficiency and renewable energy consumption and reduce CO2 emissions. This paper applies the convergence algorithm proposed by Philips and Sul to assess the convergence in renewable energy innovation for 90 countries covering the period between 1993 and 2018. This paper also examines the determinants/factors driving the convergence clubs of the countries using Probit and Logit regression. The convergence analyses suggest that there is no global convergence in renewable energy innovation. Findings highlight two convergence clubs: i) a club comprising more innovative countries and ii) another club that includes less innovative countries. We find that countries with higher income per capita, CO2 emissions per capita, research and development (R&D) investment, better environmental regulations and stronger institutional settings are more likely to be part of the innovative club. Countries should increase their R&D investment and environmental regulations and improve their institutional quality to increase their likelihood of belonging to a more innovative club. Whether renewable energy consumption is beneficial to reducing CO 2 emission intensity and carbon emissions in the context of the goal of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality" in China. To prove this conjecture, considering the spatial spillover effect of carbon dioxide, this paper adopts the spatial Dubin model for empirical analysis based on the panel data of China's 30 provinces over the period 2002–2019. This study explores the CO 2 intensity mitigation effect of China's renewable energy consumption and further investigates the mediation role of technological innovation, industrial structure upgrading and optimization, and energy efficiency in the nexus between renewable energy consumption and carbon intensity. The main findings present that: (1) China's carbon emission intensity is characterized by significant spatial correlation; (2) Renewable energy consumption can significantly reduce carbon intensity and per capita carbon emissions; (3) The mediation effect of renewable energy consumption in reducing carbon emission intensity is to promote technological innovation and industrial structure upgrading, as well as improve energy efficiency. —Regarding the increase of carbon dioxide emissions with growing energy demand, recent emerging technologies for multi-energy system have attracted much attention, as they can effectively couple and coordinate different energies to further control carbon dioxide emissions. This paper focuses on distribution-level multi-energy system and proposes an optimal scheduling method for hydrogen support based on dual-agent energy-carbon price interactive response. Firstly, a hydrogen-supported multi-energy closed-loop flow mode is developed, which provides an effective way to improve renewable energy consumption and brings additional economic revenue of solid carbon. Secondly, a dual-agent energy-carbon price interactive response scheme is designed based on the concept of energy-carbon participation ratio, which takes carbon dioxide emissions of gas load and various carbon revenues into account. This scheme can motivate users for energy demand adjustment and active carbon dioxide reduction by setting energy and carbon prices as two guiding signals. Finally, a bi-level optimal scheduling model is proposed for dual agents of energy service provider and users to maximize the benefit of each side. The metallurgy industry plays a very important role in China's economic growth. Due to its energy concentration, the energy consumption of the industry accounts for a large proportion of China's total energy consumption, and thus contributes to carbon emissions. Whether the metallurgy industry can successfully reduce emissions is related to the future of China's carbon emissions targets. In this paper, the logarithmic mean Divisia index model is used to analyze the change in China's carbon dioxide emissions from 1991 to 2014. The empirical results show that there are three main factors affecting the carbon dioxide emissions of China's metallurgy industry. The three factors are labor productivity, energy intensity and industry size. In addition, we further analyzed the deep motivation of carbon dioxide emissions in the industry, and calculated the future emission reduction potentials. This paper investigates the determinants of carbon emissions based on energy consumption, analyzing the data of 30 countries using nuclear energy for the period 1990–2014. Renewable energy and nuclear energy consumption are adopted as determinants, and real coal price and real GDP are used as additive variables. The panel cointegration analysis and Granger causality tests are conducted to investigating the relationship among the variables. First, the panel cointegration test results suggest that long-run equilibrium relationship exists among carbon emissions, renewable energy consumption, and nuclear energy consumption. The results of the long-run cointegrating vector and Granger causality tests indicate that nuclear energy does not contribute to carbon reduction unlike renewable energy. Thus, the development and expansion of renewable, not nuclear, energy are essential to prevent global warming. Though there is a concern that rising energy prices caused by the expansion of renewable energy may impact the economy negatively, our empirical results also imply that renewable energy consumption will promote economic growth. At present, carbon emissions reduction is a very important challenge all over the world. Improvement of human capital helps to reduce carbon emissions. This paper studies the long- and short-term effects of human capital on carbon emissions in Pakistan from 1971 to 2014. We employ an autoregressive distributed lag model and the vector error correction model to analyze the co-integration and direction of causalities between human capital and carbon emissions, respectively. Results show that a significant long-term relationship exists between human capital and carbon emissions. Improvement of human capital will reduce carbon emissions without decreasing economic growth. Granger causality test results describe the bidirectional causality that exists between human capital and carbon emissions in the long term and no causality in the short term. Human capital and economic growth have feedback effects in the long term and no effect in the short term. The results of this study show that improvement in human capital through education will help carbon emissions reduction in the long term. Consumption-based carbon emission accounting is able to clarify consumers’ responsibility for the carbon emissions from a power system. The responsible amount of carbon emissions for each consumer can be calculated based on the power consumption and the accordant carbon emission flow (CEF). Distribution of the CEF in the network may vary significantly under different transmission network configurations, resulting in different attributed carbon emission responsibilities of consumers. This paper describes how transmission expansion planning (TEP) and consumption-based carbon emission accounting affect each other. A novel TEP model considering the consumption-based carbon emission accounting is presented. A new index named CO 2 allocation equity coefficient (CAEC) is introduced to quantify the equity performance of the consumption-based carbon emission accounting system. As such, the requirement for different equity performances can be explicitly incorporated into the TEP model as a constraint to determine its effect on TEP. The proposed TEP model is tested on Garver’s 6-bus system and a modified IEEE 39-bus system. The results show that the methodology is able to obtain the transmission expansion planning, in general, more lines must be planned to achieve better equity performance, with more even consumption-based carbon emission, but leading to an overall increasing tendency in the annualized transmission investment cost. The transportation sector is one of the major driving forces of carbon emissions. Identifying the factors that affect CO 2 emissions from the transportation sector is important to build a low-carbon city. Most existing research focuses on the total effect of factors on CO 2 emissions while the indirect influence is also the driving force of CO 2 emissions. Additionally, identifying the causal relationship between variables is helpful to study the mutual acting mechanism. Therefore, this paper uses the path analysis model to estimate the direct, indirect and total influences of driving factors on transportation CO 2 emissions in Beijing and investigate the causality relationships between variables. The results show that reducing energy intensity and transportation intensity are the key factors in controlling the increase of transportation-related CO 2 emissions. Population has the greatest positive impact on CO 2 emissions because an increasing population is leading to growth in energy consumption and the number of motor vehicles. However, population could indirectly affect the energy intensity and transportation intensity to reduce carbon emissions. Moreover, motor vehicles increase CO 2 emissions due to the growth in private car population and its low energy efficiency. And, the change in the economic growth pattern somewhat inhibits the growth rate of CO 2 emissions by reducing the energy intensity and transportation intensity indirectly. To further suppress the growth of transportation carbon emissions, the following steps should be taken: appropriately improve the quality of population, control the scale of motor vehicles, develop and promote clean energy, and reduce traffic energy intensity and transportation intensity. Combined cooling, heating and power system is an effective technology for energy conservation and environmental protection, especially for buildings with multiple demands on electricity, cooling and heating load. Various energy indicators have been proposed for evaluating and optimizing the energy efficiency of combined cooling, heating and power systems, but previous studies have not yet clarified how to use them in a reasonable way that takes their specific merits into account. This paper aims to identify the underlying effects of three common energy indicators, including the primary energy rate, primary energy saving rate, and annual average comprehensive energy utilization efficiency, based on the optimized performance of combined cooling, heating and power systems with different typical configurations. This paper proposes three combined cooling, heating and power system configurations for an office building in Kunming to conduct a comparative analysis of three energy indicators. Two common operation strategy (the following thermal load and following electricity load) and the genetic algorithm are selected to performed single-objective optimization with energy indicator as target. The economic and environmental analysis is also carried out to show the impact of energy indicators on other indicators. The results show that, the indicators primary energy rate and primary energy saving rate have the same optimization effect of energy consumption when the system configuration and operation strategy are identical, as the difference between the primary energy rate values is not more than 1%, and the difference between the primary energy saving rate values is not more than 0.5%. The advantage of primary energy rate is that the difference between the primary energy rate values of combined cooling, heating and power systems and reference system could show whether carbon dioxide emissions are reduced, and the advantage of primary energy saving rate is that its value directly indicates whether the system achieves energy-saving or not. Furthermore, the annual average comprehensive energy utilization rate is not suitable for the single-objective optimization of combined cooling, heating and power systems. This study distinguishes the differences between indicators and the conclusions are of general significance which could provide valuable guidance for designers to select optimal energy indicators applying to the optimization design of combined cooling, heating and power systems. The aim of this paper is to provide new empirical evidence on the impact of economic growth and energy use on carbon emissions (CO 2 emissions) for fifty eight countries over the period 1990–2012 by using a panel data model. We also apply this model in order to implement three regional sub-groups; European and North Asian region, Latin American and Caribbean region, and the Middle Eastern, North African and sub-Saharan region. The results revealed that the energy use has a positive impact on the carbon dioxide emissions for all the panels. The impact of economic growth on the environment has received increased attention as global warming and other environmental problems become more serious. Indeed, the per capita GDP has a positive and statistically significant impact on carbon for the global panel, for the Europe and North Asia, and for the Middle Eastern, North Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa. This study uses annual data to detect the nexus between urbanization, energy use, and carbon emissions in a panel of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries spanning the period 1980–2009. The study contributes to the increasing empirical literature by investigating the effects of urbanization and detecting causal links between the variables. Results from the Pedroni panel cointegration tests show evidence for the existence of a long-term equilibrium relationship between urbanization, energy use, and carbon emissions for the ASEAN countries. Using the panel fully modified ordinary least squares technique, the effect of urbanization on carbon emissions is further revealed; i.e., a 1% rise in urban population results in a 0.20% increase in carbon emissions. Unilateral short-run causal relationships from urbanization to energy use and from urbanization to carbon emissions have been found by Granger causality tests. Also, the results clearly indicate that in the long term, urbanization together with energy use Granger causes carbon emissions. The paper concludes with main findings and provides recommendations toward rational planning of urban development and energy-efficiency improvement strategies for the ASEAN countries. Since the combustion of fossil fuel became the largest contributing factor of greenhouse gas emissions in China, the growth of energy consumption caused by urbanization has led to significant increase in carbon emissions. Applying both the carbon-emissions-coefficient and the sector-energy-consumption method, we predicted the energy consumption and carbon emissions, explored the characteristics of energy consumption and carbon emissions in different urbanization stages, and analyzed the energy crisis in Shandong which is a typical province in China. The results indicate that in 2015 and 2020, the total primary energy consumption will be 1.57 times and 1.85 times higher than that of in 2009, and the carbon emissions are estimated to be 1.48 times and 1.67 times respectively. The urbanization has distinct positive effects on energy consumption and carbon emissions, and the influence is more obvious in the intermediate-stage than in the early-stage. From a policy perspective, this paper could provide valuable information for planners and decision makers to formulate feasible and practical polices with a view to optimize energy structure and mitigate carbon emissions. The non-metallic minerals industry is the third-largest industrial energy consumer, and it constitutes around 7% of global CO 2 emissions due to the high energy intensity of production processes. Although the substantial improvement of the energy efficiency of this industry in the EU observed since 1995, the energy intensity of this sector is still relatively high. To reach the goals of the Paris Agreement, it is necessary to implement further steps towards the decarbonization of this sector. Previous works do not provide information about research trends in this field or the current development of technologies. To fill this gap, the following research questions have been asked: (Q1) which decarbonization measures are already applied or under development in the non-metallic minerals sector?; (Q2) which of these measures might bring breakthrough to this sector?; (Q3) what is the impact of these measures on costs, energy consumption and GHG emissions? To this end, this paper performs a systematic literature review of GHG emission mitigation options of the non-metallic minerals industry by screening 2964 articles and performing an in-depth analysis of 48 full-text relevant articles following the PRISMA approach. The results show that the carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is the most popular research topic and has the highest decarbonization potential for the industry (up to 60%). However, more research is needed for the full-scale implementation. Further lowering the clinker to cement ratio to at least 75% is also of major importance, however, it is a mature technology, and not much research is required in this field. Despite the relatively low representation in scientific literature, heat electrification is an unavoidable direction for the industry in the long term, resulting from the global shift towards sustainable energy from renewables. In the United States, buildings account for 35% of total energy-related carbon dioxide emissions, making them important contributors to decarbonization. Carbon intensities in the power grid are time-varying and can fluctuate significantly within hours, so shifting building loads in response to the carbon intensities can reduce a building's operational carbon emissions. This paper presents a rule-based carbon responsive control framework that controls the setpoints of thermostatically controlled loads responding to the grid's carbon emission signals in real time. Based on this framework, four controllers are proposed with different combinations of carbon accounting methods and control rules. To evaluate their performance, we performed simulation studies using models of a 27-home, all-electric, net zero energy residential community located in Basalt, Colorado, United States. The carbon intensity data of four future years from the Cambium data set are adopted to account for the evolving resource mix in the power grid. Various performance metrics, including energy consumption, carbon emission, energy cost, and thermal discomfort, were used to evaluate the performance of the controllers. Sensitivity analysis was also conducted to determine how the control thresholds and intervals affect the controllers' performance. Simulation results indicate that the carbon responsive controllers can reduce the homes' annual carbon emissions by 6.0% to 20.5%. However, the energy consumption increased by 0.9% to 6.7%, except in one scenario where it decreased by 2.2%. Compared to the baseline, the change in energy cost was between −2.9% and 3.4%, and thermal discomfort was also maintained within an acceptable range. The little impact on energy cost and thermal discomfort indicates there are no potential roadblocks for customer acceptance when rolling out the controllers in utility programs. Low carbon manufacturing is of growing importance due to the severity of energy shortage and increasing energy costs, as well as a series of environmental problems, i.e., climate change and global warming. This paper investigates the potential of process parameter optimization to minimize carbon emissions during machine processing. A process model of CNC machining is first presented to scope the system boundaries for energy footprint and process efficiency. A multi-objective optimization model is then proposed to explore the impact of cutting speed and feed rate on carbon emissions and processing time. The increasing energy and material consumption associated with global economic growth has resulted in the need for more severe efforts at mitigating global climate change. The iron and steel industry consumes 8% of energy and emits 7% of total CO 2 globally. China's iron and steel industry contributes to 15% of that country's total CO 2 emissions. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore the possibility of net zero emissions in the iron and steel industry in China to meet China's goal of carbon neutrality before 2060. In the study presented in this paper, the MESSAGEix–China iron and steel model was developed by integrating the process-based technology of the sector into the IIASA's MESSAGEix framework to explore zero CO 2 emission pathways and their associated impacts on resources, energy, and water in China's iron and steel industry up to 2100. We found that there are multiple pathways to achieving zero CO 2 emissions in the Chinese iron and steel industry by the end of the 21st century. More specifically, in all the pathways developed in this study, CO 2 emissions decreased significantly between 2030 and 2060 due to the rapid application of 100% scrap-based Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) and hydrogen-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI)-EAFs steel-making technologies. However, by 2060, there will still be 70–360 Mt of CO 2 emissions from China's iron and steel industry; consequently, carbon sink or negative emission technologies are required to offset this and achieve the country's carbon neutrality goal. Furthermore, technologies for achieving zero emissions differ widely in terms of their impacts on the consumption of materials and energy. Compared to the electric (ELE) scenarios, 25–40% of extra iron ore is consumed in the current and new national policy (NPS) scenarios and the DRI scenarios, but 25–220% of scrap is required. At the same time, 20–150% more energy will be saved in the ELE scenarios than in the NPS and DRI scenarios. Abstract: As a representative of many emerging economies, BRICS’ economies have been greatly developed in recent years. Meanwhile, the proportion of energy consumption of BRICS to the whole world consumption has increased. Therefore, it is significant to analyze and compare the energy efficiency among them. This paper firstly utilizes a Super-SBM model to measure and calculate the energy efficiency of BRICS, then analyzes their present status and development trend. Further, Bootstrap is applied to modify the values based on DEA derived from small sample data, and finally the relationship between energy efficiency and carbon emissions is measured. Results show that energy efficiency of BRICS as a whole is low but has a quickly increasing trend. Also, the relationship between energy efficiency and carbon emissions vary from country to country because of their different energy structures.
