Abstract: The present study aimed at comparing the trypanosome specific 18S-PCR-RFLP using samples stored either on Whatman filter papers (PCR-RFLP-fp) or in a commercial cell lysis and DNA protecting buffer (PCR-RFLP-pb) with the haematocrit centrifugation technique (HCT), a method widely used for the diagnosis of African Animal Trypanosomosis. Out of 411 head of cattle, 49 (11.92%) (CI=8.95–15.45) scored positive for the presence of trypanosomes by HCT whereas 75 (18.25%) (CI=14.63–22.33) and 124 (30.17%) (CI=25.77–34.86) scored positive using PCR-RFLP-fp and PCR-RFLP-pb, respectively. Out of the 49 positives by HCT, 14 (28.57%) (CI=16.58–43.26) and 28 (57.14%) (CI=42.21–71.18) were concordant by PCR-RFLP-fp and PCR-RFLP-pb, respectively. None of the PCR techniques detected parasites from the Trypanozoon group. Although HCT detected more cases of Trypanosoma vivax (33), species identification using PCR-RFLP-fp and PCR-RFLP-pb were significantly different (p <0.001) from the HCT technique. The use of DNA protective buffer is thus recommended as the output of the PCR-RFLP-pb is improved and the risk of contamination between samples is reduced. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The present study was made with the objectives of development and standardization of cattle specific paper-based loop-mediated isothermal amplification cum lateral flow assay (LAMP-LFA), as a Point-of-care test (POCT) for identification of tissue of cattle origin. The components of standardized LAMP reaction utilizing cattle specific primer sets were lyophilized over paper buttons, identified best as the carrier of LAMP reagents. Based on probable LAMP amplicon, a pair of probes was designed, tagged and its hybridization with the amplified product of paper LAMP reaction was optimized. The components of lateral flow assay for detection of probe hybridized LAMP products were standardized. Analysis of successful amplification was made by using HNB dye, LAMP-LFA strip, and also by the typical ladder-like pattern on gel electrophoresis. The assay was found highly specific for cattle with an analytical sensitivity of 0.1 pg of absolute DNA. Laboratory validation carried out on samples from different individuals of cattle, coded samples, binary meat admixture, and heat-processed cattle tissues substantiated the accuracy of the assay. Comparison with pre-standardized species-specific PCR assay taken as gold standards revealed 100% conformity. The field utility of the developed assay was further established by its compatibility with the commercial kit eliminating the lengthy DNA extraction step and storage stability of LAMP reagent carrier buttons for 4 months under refrigeration. Thus, the developed assay capable of the result within 3 h in resource-limited settings can be used as POCT for identification of tissue of cattle origin. To compare the distribution of new methylene blue (NMB) solution injected into either the subperiosteal space or under the epidural fat at the first and second lumbar vertebral interspace in cattle. Prospective experimental study. Nine nonpregnant cows. Needles were advanced towards the first interlumbar epidural space using a dorsal mid-line approach. Upon confirmation of successful penetration of the ligamentum flavum, group 1 received 5 mL of 0.12% NMB in 0.9% saline. In group 2, the needle was slowly advanced a further 7–10 mm to ensure injection under the epidural fat; the same dose was injected. The extent of cranial and caudal migration of dye, as indicated by staining of epidural fat and the dura mater was measured. In group 1 ( n = 4), NMB solution migrated only between the periosteum and the epidural fat. There was unilateral distribution in two cows. In contrast, there was no difference between left- and right-sided distribution in group 2 ( n = 5), and the NMB solution migrated only between epidural fat and the dura mater. Although the dura mater was not penetrated in any animal of group 2, the dorsal roots were slightly stained and the overlying dura mater was heavily stained in these animals. • One-step rapid (~5 min) extraction of mtDNA from processed meat products. • Sensitive and selective detection of meat types up to 0.1% adulteration. • Successfully identified meat types from commercially available meat products. Detection of food adulteration is a challenge. However, the identification of adulterated meat in processed products is important for health and personal preference. Mitochondrial genomic DNA (mtDNA) is a good candidate for reliable identification of meat ingredients; however, the extraction of mtDNA from processed products is a bottleneck for development of detection strategies. Therefore, we constructed a rapid (~5 min) mtDNA extraction device. mtDNAs from different meat samples, such as pork (Sus scrofa), chicken (Gallus gallus), and beef (Bos taurus), were successfully detected in up to 0.1% adulterated animal species. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of gestation length (GL) in 16 cattle breeds by using large genotype and animal record databases. Data included over 20 million gestations since 2000 and genotypes from one million calves. The study addressed the GL variability within and between breeds, estimation of its direct and maternal heritability coefficients, association with fitness and several economic traits, and QTL detection. The breed average GL varied from 279.7 to 294.4 d in Holstein and Blonde d'Aquitaine breeds, respectively. Standard deviations per breed were similar and ranged from 5.2 to 5.8 d. Direct heritability (i.e., for GL defined as a trait of the calf) was moderate to high (h2 = 0.40–0.67), whereas the maternal heritability was low (0.04–0.06). Extreme breeding values for GL were strongly associated with a higher mortality during the first 2 d of life and were associated with milk production of dams for dairy breeds and precocity of females. Finally, several QTL were detected affecting GL with cumulated effects up to a few days, and at least 2 QTL were found to be shared between different breeds. Our study highlights the risks that would be associated with selection toward a reduced GL. The objective of this narrative literature review is to better understand bovine hemoplasmosis, an emerging disease that threatens dairy animal health. Several species of hemotropic mycoplasma are known to infect both animals and humans, and Mycoplasma wenyonii and Candidatus Mycoplasma haemobos are the species that infect red blood cells of cattle. These microorganisms are associated with clinical signs in dairy cattle, but the effects of infection on health and productivity of dairy cows are poorly understood. In this paper, we review information about the epidemiology of bovine hemoplasmosis in different countries, including clinical signs associated with hemoplasmosis in cattle, methods of diagnosis, treatment, possible routes of transmission, risk factors for infection, and disease progression. Although hemoplasmas have been reported to infect cattle in many countries, and methods used to detect these organisms have improved, numerous gaps in knowledge were identified. The pathogenesis of the disease and potential effect on animal health and productivity remain unclear. With this review, we seek to contribute to the understanding of hemoplasmosis in cattle and provide insights for further research to improve disease management strategies and overall animal health in the dairy industry. Hyperketonemia (HYK) is one of the most frequent and costly metabolic disorders in high-producing dairy cows and its diagnosis is based on β -hydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentration in blood. In the last 10 years, the number of papers that have dealt with the impact of elevated BHB levels in dairy cattle has increased. Therefore, this paper reviewed the recent literature on BHB concentration in blood and milk, and its relationships with dairy cow health and performance, and farm profitability. Most studies applied the threshold of 1.2 mmol/l of BHB concentration in blood to indicate HYK; several authors considered BHB concentrations between 1.2 and 2.9 mmol/l as subclinical ketosis, and values ⩾3.0 mmol/l as clinical ketosis. Results on HYK frequency (prevalence and incidence) and cow performance varied according to parity and days in milk, being greater in multiparous than in primiparous cows, and in the first 2 weeks of lactation than in later stages. Hyperketonemia has been associated with greater milk fat content, fat-to-protein ratio and energy-corrected milk, and lower protein and urea nitrogen in milk. The relationships with milk yield and somatic cell count are still controversial. In general, HYK impairs health of dairy cows by increasing the risk of the onset of other early lactation diseases, and it negatively affects reproductive performance. The economic cost of HYK is mainly due to impaired reproductive performance and milk loss. From a genetic point of view, results from the literature suggested the feasibility of selecting cows with low susceptibility to HYK. The present review highlights that milk is the most promising matrix to identify HYK, because it is easy to sample and allows a complete screening of the herd through BHB concentration predicted using mid-IR spectroscopy during routine milk recording. Further research is needed to validate accurate and convenient methods to discriminate between cows in risk of HYK and healthy animals in field conditions and to support farmers to achieve an early detection and minimise the economic losses. Simulated Physiological Oocyte Maturation (SPOM) mimics in vitro the physiological events of oocyte maturation. The system uses cAMP modulators in two steps (pre IVM and IVM) and has presented promising results that are arousing the curiosity of IVF programs in different animal species, generating several papers, adaptations, and controversies worldwide. This study systematically analyses the data in the literature on the use of SPOM and compares the outcomes to the original paper (Albuz et al. Hum. Rep., 25: 2999–3011 2010), classifying them into success or failure. The PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases were searched and 22 studies were included, from which data on 26 experiments were extracted and evaluated via descriptive statistical analysis. Only experiments that assessed the blastocyst rate (BR) were considered for the success parameter, i.e. success (increase in BR) or failure (either no difference or a reduction in BR). The experiments applied the SPOM system in the following species: cattle, sheep, goats, mice, mares and cats. Three experiments (3/26) could not be evaluated for success or failure, and of the remaining, 34.7% (8/23) succeeded in improving blastocyst production. More than two-thirds (69.2%, 18/26) of experiments were conducted in cattle; of those, 86.8% (13/15) used TCM-199 as the IVM media, and 22.2% did not use forskolin or IBMX modulators as indicated in the original study. Also, 27.7% (5/18) of the experiments in cattle used the same type and dose of FSH, and 22% (4/18) used the same protein source and concentration as indicated in the original study. All experiments conducted in mice (3) kept the parameters of the original study in terms of forskolin and IBMX doses and BSA and FSH concentrations, however, they removed cilostamide from IVM. Cilostamide was used during IVM in more than half (53.8%) of all experiments, but only in cattle and sheep. Considering oocyte and embryo assessments, six experiments assessed cAMP levels and most (5/6) of these observed an increase: in cattle (2), sheep (2), and mice (1). Ten experiments evaluated the effect of SPOM on nuclear maturation, and in 90% (9/10), the SPOM system was able to arrest meiosis (cattle, sheep and mice). Thirteen experiments evaluated the total cell number (cattle, mice and sheep), and six (6/13) showed an increase. Our findings clearly indicate difficulties in reproducing the SPOM system worldwide, demonstrating that the meiosis arrest is not sufficient to ensure successful SPOM application. They also suggest that the different supplements used in the IVM medium and/or their interaction with modulators for different durations may produce a significant bias that affects experimental success. • The review compilated data from each application of SPOM system in several species. • It was identified a great interest on SPOM system application in cattle throughout the years. • More than half of the evaluated experiments failed in reproducing the system. • The majority of experiments did changes in the system application according to the original study. The purpose of this study was to estimate the impacts of rapid and accurate tracing of cattle movements during a Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak in the United States (US). To simulate introduction and spread of FMD we utilized InterSpread Plus, a spatially explicit disease transmission model, and a national livestock population file. The simulations began in one of four regions of the US via beef or dairy cattle as the index infected premises (IP). The first IP was detected 8, 14, or 21 days after introduction. The tracing levels were defined by the probability of a successful trace and the time to trace completion. We evaluated three tracing performance levels, a baseline that represents a mix of paper and electronic interstate shipment records, an estimated partial implementation of electronic identification (EID) tracing, and an estimated full implementation of EID tracing. To evaluate the potential to decrease the size of control areas and surveillance zones with full EID use, we compared the standard size for each to a reduced geographical area for each. The total number of IPs in an outbreak varied with the location of the index farms. Within index farm locations and across tracing performance levels, early detection (day 8) resulted in fewer IPs and a shorter duration of the outbreak. The impact of improving tracing was most evident within introduction region when detection was delayed (day 14 or 21). Full EID use decreased the 95th percentile but had a smaller impact on the median number of IPs. Improved tracing also decreased the number of farms impacted by control efforts in control areas (0–10 km) and surveillance zones (10–20 km) by decreasing outbreak size (total IPs). Decreasing the control area (0–7 km) and surveillance zone (7–14 km) sizes while using full EID tracing further decreased the number of farms under surveillance but increased the number of IPs slightly. Consistent with previous results, this supports the potential value of early detection and improved traceability to control FMD outbreaks. Further development of the EID system in the US is necessary to achieve the modeled results. In order to reduce the ammonia concentration in the cattle house, it is necessary to accurately predict the ammonia concentration in real time. This paper proposes an improved particle swarm QPSO-RBF combined prediction method of ammonia concentration in cattle house based on KPCA nuclear principal component analysis. At first, the collected environmental data is normalized and denoised based on KPCA nuclear principal component analysis, and the non-linear kernel principal component information of the sample information is extracted through the contribution rate. And, the relevant parameters of the radial neural network RBF are optimized based on the improved particle swarm algorithm QPSO global search performance to improve the accuracy and robustness of prediction. The method is applied to the prediction of ammonia concentration in a cattle farm in Langzhong, and the experimental results show that the KPCA-QPSO-RBF ammonia combined prediction model proposed in this paper has higher credibility and accuracy compared with the other four prediction models. Endoscopy in bovine internal medicine has come a long way from the first profound research papers in the 1980s to its present-day use. This paper reviews the progress in the 2000s and identifies the main application fields for diagnostic and therapeutic use. Inclusion criteria for scientific papers and reports encompassed focus on endoscopic examination techniques in cattle in the field of internal medicine and publication in a peer reviewed journal (case report/review/original research paper/short communication). Only papers written in English or German language were considered. Studies on laparoscopy, theloscopy, and bronchoscopy show that endoscopic approaches often enable more rapid and accurate diagnosis and treatment options for single diseased animals as well as on a herd level. Oesophagoscopy, rumenoscopy, cystoscopy and thoracoscopy have also been increasingly studied and proven to be safe and effective tools with some limitations in diagnosing and/or treating various diseases in cattle. Scientific approaches explored the epidural space in cattle and comparison of different endoscope systems lead to recommendations for sinuscopy. Yet, this narrative literature review clearly shows that unlike in human medicine, where endoscopy as a minimally invasive technique is used for countless routine procedures every day, there is still some catching up to do in bovine medicine even though the potential of endoscopy in this field has been documented. • Endoscopic procedures (EP) enabled more rapid and accurate diagnosis and prognosis. • EP have been proven to be safe and effective approaches for treatment in cattle. • Benefits of endoscopic approaches (EA) included shorter recovery time and less pain. • EA lowered risk of infection with implications for antimicrobial use and resistance. • The potential of EA in the field have been documented but need to be expanded. Interbull's multiple across-country evaluaftion provides national breeding organizations with breeding values for internationally used bulls, which integrate performance data obtained in different breeding populations, environments, and production systems. However, breeding value-based selection decisions on domestic individuals born to foreign sires can only benefit from Interbull breeding values if they are integrated such that their information can contribute to the breeding values of all related domestic animals. For that purpose, several methods have been proposed which either model Interbull breeding values as prior information in a Bayesian approach, as additional pseudo data points, or as correlated traits, where these methods also differ in their software and parameterization requirements. Further, the complexity of integration also depends on the traits and genetic evaluation models. Especially random regression models require attention because of the dimensionality discrepancy between the number of Interbull breeding values and the number of modeled genetic effects. This paper presents the results from integrating 16,063 Interbull breeding values into the domestic single-step random regression test-day model for milk, fat, and protein yield for Australian Red dairy cattle breeds. Interbull breeding values were modeled as pseudo data points with data point-specific residual variances derived within animal across traits, ignoring relationships between integrated animals. Results suggest that the integration was successful with regard to alignment of Interbull breeding values with their domestic equivalent as well as with regard to the individual and population-wide increase in reliabilities. Depending on the relationship structure between integration candidates, further work is required to account for those relationships in a computationally feasible manner. Forensic post-mortem examinations of animals are carried out on suspicion of violation of European and national legislation. In Denmark, and probably also in other countries with large-scale cattle production, cattle are regularly submitted for forensic assessment. Unfortunately, only few studies of forensic pathology in cattle are available. This paper presents a retrospective study of forensic case files on Danish cattle from January 2010 to December 2021. The case files were characterized with respect to types of lesion, age assessments of lesions and other parameters such as age and sex. A total of 118 forensic case files had been archived and related to 132 cattle (14 weeks–20 years of age; 68% female, 30% male and 2% unknown sex) with 228 lesions. Locomotor disorders constituted the majority of lesions. However, cachexia/emaciation, skin ulcerations and overgrowth of cornual horn were also frequent. Most lesions were chronic (91%) and age assessments for more than 2 weeks were stated for 79% of the lesions. This indicates that in Denmark at least, there is a need to consider how cattle with locomotor disorders are treated in a timely manner in order to avoid prolonged futile treatment and, thereby, suffering. Grossly visible reparative granulation tissue and new bone formation were present in lesions of 1–2 weeks and longer duration. However, all age assessments were stated in broad time intervals due to the lack of scientifically based forensic studies of age assessments of lesions in cattle. Therefore, to improve age assessments in forensic cattle cases, studies concerning the chronology of tissue reparation in cattle are warranted. Livestock production provides a pathway for improving livelihoods and reducing poverty in semi-arid tropical regions. However, this contribution has been affected by low livestock productivity. Most livestock programmes have also failed due to, among other things, the inability to understand the dynamics in smallholder breeding preferences. Using data from the sub-humid region in Zimbabwe, this paper sought to provide evidence on smallholder cattle breeding preferences and the implication on livestock improvement programmes. It applies the choice experiment approach to model farmer preferences for selected cattle breeding attributes. The results show three attributes that significantly affect breeding preferences. The attributes 'cow body condition score' and the 'useful life of a bull/semen' have a positive influence while 'artificial insemination/bull maintenance cost' negatively affects farmer preferences. This means farmers prefer breeding strategies which improve the nutrition of their cows, have a longer lifespan for the bull/semen and whose cost of breeding services is low. However, access to education and income affected these preferences. Education made farmers to make informed choices while higher incomes increased the propensity of investing in livestock breeding technologies. The findings also show that existing institutional arrangements in animal management and community grazing do not promote investment in livestock improvement. Thus, more attention should be given to improving animal nutritional management which includes promoting sustainable grazing schemes. There is also a need to provide affordable livestock breeding services through recruiting and training more artificial insemination service providers. Strong and effective institutions that provide incentives for collective participation are integral to any community-based livestock breeding programme. The so-called global change refers to changes on a planetary scale. The term encompasses various issues like resource use, energy development, population growth, land use and land cover, carbon and nitrogen cycle, pollution and health, and climate change. The paper deals with challenges for dairy cattle production systems in Europe arising from climate change as one part of global changes. Global warming is increasing, and therefore ecosystems, plant and animal biodiversity, and food security and safety are at risk. It is already accepted knowledge that the direct and indirect effects of global warming in combination with an increasing frequency of weather extremes are a serious issue for livestock production, even in moderate climate zones like Central Europe. The potential and already-measurable effects of climate change (including increase in temperature, frequency of hot days and heat waves), in particular the challenges on grassland production, fodder quality, nutrition in general, cow welfare, health as well as performance of dairy production, will be reviewed. Indirect and direct effects on animals are correlated with their performance. There are clear indications that with selection for high-yielding animals the sensitivity to climate changes increases. Cumulative effects (e.g. higher temperature plus increased pathogen and their vectors loads) do strengthen these impacts. To cope with the consequences several possible adaptation and mitigation strategies must be established on different levels. This paper describes an outbreak of nephrosis in cattle associated with the consumption of Ludwigia peploides in Tucuman province, northwestern Argentina. Affected cows exhibited submandibular and chest edema, lethargy and ataxia, and eventually succumbed to these conditions. These animals were grazing in a floodable area severely invaded by this plant. The disease affected 7 out of a herd of 67 cows. Horses and goats grazing in the same location were not affected. The main gross and histological lesion corresponded to a severe nephrosis. The disease is similar to the poisoning by Ludwigia peruviana reported in Colombia. A plethora of sensors and information technologies with applications to the precision nutrition of herbivores have been developed and continue to be developed. The nutritional processes start outside of the animal body with the available feed (quantity and quality) and continue inside it once the feed is consumed, degraded in the gastrointestinal tract and metabolised by organs and tissues. Finally, some nutrients are wasted via urination, defecation and gaseous emissions through breathing and belching whereas remaining nutrients ensure maintenance and production. Nowadays, several processes can be monitored in real-time using new technologies, but although these provide valuable data 'as is', further gains could be obtained using this information as inputs to nutrition simulation models to predict unmeasurable variables in real-time and to forecast outcomes of interest. Data provided by sensors can create synergies with simulation models and this approach has the potential to expand current applications. In addition, data provided by sensors could be used with advanced analytical techniques such as data fusion, optimisation techniques and machine learning to improve their value for applications in precision animal nutrition. The present paper reviews technologies that can monitor different nutritional processes relevant to animal production, profitability, environmental management and welfare. We discussed the model-data fusion approach in which data provided by sensor technologies can be used as input of nutrition simulation models in near-real time to produce more accurate, certain and timely predictions. We also discuss some examples that have taken this model-data fusion approach to complement the capabilities of both models and sensor data, and provided examples such as predicting feed intake and methane emissions. Challenges with automatising the nutritional management of individual animals include monitoring and predicting of the flow of nutrients including nutrient intake, quantity and composition of body growth and milk production, gestation, maintenance and physical activities at the individual animal level. We concluded that the livestock industries are already seeing benefits from the development of sensor and information technologies, and this benefit is expected to grow exponentially soon with the integration of nutrition simulation models and techniques for big data analysis. However, this approach may need re-evaluating or performing new empirical research in both fields of animal nutrition and simulation modelling to accommodate a new type of data provided by the sensor technologies. The purpose of this paper is to review scientific evidence concerning pathogens that could potentially be transmitted via bovine semen. As a result of a careful analysis of the characteristics of infections that may cause transmission of disease through semen, effective control procedures can be identified that provide minimal constraint to the introduction of new bulls into herds for natural breeding and importation of valuable novel genetics through artificial insemination. The potential for transmission through bovine semen and corresponding effective control procedures are described for bovine herpesvirus 1, bovine viral diarrhea virus, bovine leukemia virus, lumpy skin disease virus, bluetongue virus, foot-and-mouth disease virus, and Schmallenberg virus. Brief consideration is also provided regarding the potential for transmission via semen of Tritrichomonas foetus , Campylobacter fetus venerealis , Brucella abortus , Leptospira spp., Histophilus somni , Ureaplasma diversum , Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis , Chlamydiaceae , Mycobacterium bovis , Coxiella burnetii , Mycoplasma mycoides ssp. mycoides and Neospora caninum. A healthy riparian ecosystem is essential to maintain instream water quality, decrease stream bank erosion, increase bank stability and prevent soil loss within river systems, which in turn may affect coastal water quality. The presence of cattle within the riparian zone is a common feature of grazing ventures, but can negatively impact on the functionality of riparian ecosystems. Therefore, the provision of offstream watering points (OSWPs) as an alternative watering source for cattle may lessen or prevent the impact cattle have on the riparian zone. A systematic review was conducted to identify: 1) which factors influence how cattle use OSWPs, and 2) if the provision of an OSWP is an effective best management practice to reduce the time cattle spent in riparian zones, potentially limiting the impact cattle may have on instream water quality and riparian habitat particularly stream bank vegetation. A total of 37 from 1135 research papers satisfied the initial selection criteria for the review with seven providing sufficient information to conduct a meta-analysis. Out of the 37 papers a total of seven factors and five sub-factors influencing cattle’s use of OSWPs were identified. There is evidence that OSWPs did reduce the time cattle spent in riparian zones, however with great variation (63.7%) among studies. The review further highlights that substantial knowledge gaps exist within the literature linking the interaction of cattle, OSWPs and riparian habitats indicating the need for further research. In recent years, injection of clove oil was investigated as potential alternative to the use of a hot iron for disbudding due to its cytotoxic and anaesthetic properties. Isoeugenol, the isomer of the main component of clove oil, is available as a pure substance and has some advantages as compared to clove oil, but its effects were studied rarely. In this paper we investigated behaviour, heart rate, heart rate variability and surface temperature around the horn bud of 40 calves in four treatments (N = 10/treatment): injection under each horn bud of 1.5 ml clove oil (CLOV), isoeugenol (ISO) or saline (CON), or hot-iron disbudding (BURN) with local anaesthesia and sedation. Behaviour, heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) as well as surface temperature around the horn buds were measured before and at different time points after the treatment up to 7 days post treatment; behaviour was also observed during the treatment. Behavioural observations were performed real-time or per video recording. HR and HRV were analysed during undisturbed lying periods and post-treatment changes relative to baseline were calculated. The maximum surface temperature in the region around each of the two horn buds was used for further analysis. LMM, ANOVA or, for behaviour during treatment, non-parametric tests were used for statistical analysis. There was a treatment*time point interaction (LMM, p<0.05) for behaviours associated with pain (ear flicking, head shaking, head scratching) as well as for self-grooming. HR or HRV changes from baseline did not differ between treatments, but sample size was strongly reduced due to lack of data. The development of the maximum surface temperature around the horn buds differed clearly between treatments. The present paper describes the main procedures used to slaughter fowl, pigs, calves and adult cattle, sheep, and farmed fish, starting on the farm and ending with the death of the animal at the abattoir. It reviews the currently known causes of stress, indicated by behavioural and physiological measurements on the animal level, and by post-mortem muscle metabolism. During the pre-slaughter period, psychological stress is due to changes of environment, social disturbances and handling, and physical stress is due to food deprivation, climatic conditions, fatigue, and sometimes pain. The exact causes of stress depend, however, on the characteristics of each species, including the rearing system. For fowl, bird catching and crating, duration and climatic conditions of transport and of lairage and shackling are the main known pre-slaughter stress factors. For pigs, stress is caused by fighting during mixing of pens, loading and unloading conditions, and introduction in the restrainer. Handling and novelty of the situation contribute to the stress reactions. For veal calves and adult cattle, disruption of the social group, handling, loading and sometimes unloading conditions, fatigue, novelty of the situation and for calves mixing with unfamiliar animals are known stress factors. Gathering and yarding of extensively reared lambs and sheep causes stress, particularly when shepherd dogs are used. Subsequent transport may induce fatigue, especially if sheep are commercialised through auctions or markets. In farmed fish, stress is predominantly related to environmental aspects such as temperature, oxygen, cleanliness of the water and, to a certain extent, stocking density and removal of the fish from the water. If transport and lairage conditions are good and their durations not too long, they may allow pigs, calves and adult cattle, sheep, and fish to rest. For certain species, it was shown that genetic origin and earlier experience influence reactions to the slaughter procedure. Stunning techniques used depend on the species. Pigs and fowl are mostly electrically or gas-stunned, while most adult cattle are stunned with a captive bolt pistol. Calves and sheep may be electrically stunned or with a captive bolt pistol. Various stunning methods exist for the different farmed fish species. Potential causes of stress associated with the different stunning procedures are discussed. The paper addresses further consequences for meat quality and possible itineraries for future research. For all species, and most urgently for fish, more knowledge is needed on stunning and killing techniques, including gas-stunning techniques, to protect welfare. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study looks at the bibliographic mapping of citation, co-occurrence of keywords, co-citation and bibliographic coupling for heat tolerance in farm animals. Data was obtained from Scopus (Elsevier) and analysed in Vosviewer. Several salient points emerge from our analysis. We found a total of 1728 documents from 102 countries, of which 54% are from six countries (USA, China, Brazil, India, Australia and UK). While heat tolerance is important, Global South countries have recently become more important in this topic. Nevertheless, researchers from this region appear relatively isolated using the metrics of this study. One potential factor contributing to isolation could be lack of funding. This is discussed in the light of current Article Processing Charges. We also note a gradual drift in heat stress studies from animal physiology towards genomics and cellular biology. The paper can help understanding tendencies in this field of research and may point to future actions within the research community. This paper also shows the need to strengthen studies in less favoured areas and with species such as small ruminants, whereby small holders may be harder hit by climate change. [Display omitted] • This is the first known quantitative review of the impact of liver fluke on performance in sheep and cattle. • We searched 1582 published studies for data and 233 effect sizes from 28 studies were used. • Infected animals had −9% daily weight gain, −6% live weight and −0.5% carcass weight compared with uninfected animals. • There were larger effect sizes for some traits in juvenile animals, sheep, and with increasing time post-infection. • Effects on total weight gain and milk yield were weak, perhaps due to data limitations. Liver flukes (Fasciola spp.) are important parasites of ruminant livestock worldwide, causing profound damage to animal health and productivity. Many reviews have discussed the results of decades of research on the impact of fluke on livestock traits such as weight gain and milk production, but there have been no known attempts to collate previous research in a quantitative manner or to determine the factors that vary between studies that find substantial effects of fluke and others concluding that effects of fluke are negligible. Here, we use meta-analysis to provide quantitative "global" estimates of the impact of liver fluke on animal performance, and to identify elements of study design ("moderators") that influence variation between studies in their outcome. A literature search provided 233 comparisons of performance in fluke-infected and uninfected animals. We standardised these data as log response ratios and calculated effect size variances to weight studies by the accuracy of their estimates. We performed multi-level meta-analysis to estimate effects of fluke infection on daily weight gain, live weight, carcass weight, total weight gain and milk production. There were statistically-supported negative effects of fluke infection on daily weight gain, live weight and carcass weight (9%, 6% and 0.6% reductions, respectively), but not on total weight gain or milk production. A mixed-effects meta-analysis revealed that studies of younger animals found more severe effects of fluke on weight gain and that effects on live weight increased with time since infection. Limitations to the data that could be analysed, including a lack of statistical reporting in older papers and variation in the outcome variables measured, may have explained the relatively limited influence of modifiers that we detected. Our results provide, to our knowledge, the first quantitative estimate of the impact of liver fluke on performance across studies and highlight some elements of study design that can influence conclusions. Hairy vetch (Vicia villosa) poisoning in cattle is characterized by a systemic granulomatous inflammatory response that resembles a type-IV hypersensitivity reaction. Hairy vetch toxicity has been described in cattle worldwide. The aim of this paper was to describe 10 outbreaks of hairy vetch poisoning in cattle studied at INTA EEA Salta and INTA EEA Balcarce, Argentina, from 2004 to 2019. Clinical signs included weakness, pyrexia, dermatitis, alopecia, and progressive weight loss, which leads to death over a clinical course of approximately two weeks. A total of 12 necropsies were performed and tissue samples were collected for histopathology. The main gross changes were observed in skin, lymph nodes, liver, heart, spleen and kidneys. Other tissues, such as pancreas, thyroid, and adrenal glands, were also affected. Histological lesions consisted of multifocal to diffuse granulomatous inflammation in those organs. The toxicity of hairy vetch has been described in several countries of the world. In Argentina, the use of hairy vetch as a cover crop has become common in some regions during the past years. The data suggest that hairy vetch poisoning is an important disease in cattle. In this paper, we describe poisoning outbreaks of Xanthium strumarium in cattle on the borders of the Araguari River, Southeastern Brazil. In this region, several hydroelectric plants promote transient flooding, which creates a favorable environment for the invasion of X. strumarium in extensive areas, often as the predominant species in those areas. The outbreaks occurred between July and September (dry season). Bovines of all ages were affected, including suckling animals. Mortality varied from 2% to 5.5%. The animals exhibited ataxia, weakness, loss of balance, recumbency, and the majority were found dead. Laboratory results showed a marked increase in the serum activities of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and gamma-glutamyltransferase. Histological and ultrastructural changes in the liver consisted of centrilobular necrosis and hemorrhage. On toxicological evaluation, the dicotyledons contained 0.30 μg/mg of atractyloside and 0.37 μg/mg of carboxyatractyloside. Considerable economic loss has occurred in this region due to the lack of knowledge regarding X. strumarium as a toxic plant and its adaptation to the environmental and climatic conditions of the region, which have made the condition endemic. • Xanthium strumarium , which contains carboxyatractyloside, is a cause of hepatic liver necrosis in ruminants and horses. • The poisoning has been reported sporadically in temperate areas due to the ingestion of the seedling or the burs of the plant. • The poisoning became very important after the introduction of the plant where hydroelectric plants promote transient flooding. • The seedlings sprout after flooding, during the dry period, when the water returns to its normal level. • To prevent severe losses, it is important to reduce the infestation of X. strumarium in such areas. Pastureland maintenance is seen as a land-based measure to reduce dependency on feed concentrates and mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from livestock production in the EU, while providing other ecosystems services. This paper assesses potential market-mediated impacts, including global Land Use Change (LUC) and GHG emissions, from increased subsidies to pasture-based livestock production in the EU. A tax recycling strategy (TRS) is simulated against a baseline up to 2030 under the shared socioeconomic pathway 2 (SSP2). This implies a budget-neutral increase in the level of pasture subsidies in individual Member States, as land subsidies for other cropping activities decrease. We employ the computable general equilibrium (CGE) model GTAP in its recursive-dynamic version, GTAP-RDEM, extended with the Multi-Regional Input-Output (MRIO) database FABIO to disaggregate agri-food sectors from 21 to 31. This approach allows considering price- and income-dependent feedbacks when assessing long-run changes in the global economy, improving the sectoral resolution relative to GTAP v10. The policy increases pastureland areas and cattle production in almost all EU Member States, whereas cropland and crop production decrease, causing significant changes across EU agri-food markets. Crop prices increase, leading to the reduced output of intensive animal production sectors, mainly pig and poultry. Cropland areas decrease and most EU countries increase imports of grain, oilseeds, and cakes, essentially soybean cake from Brazil and North America. While GHG emissions decrease in those EU countries where pasturelands expand mainly at the cost of croplands, GHG emissions increase in those countries where pastureland expansion comes with forest loss. As a result, net GHG emissions increase in the EU-27 in 2030 (+2.49 Mt CO 2 -eq). Emissions from LUC in major non-EU grain- and oilseed-exporting countries increase, e.g., by 102.52 Mt CO 2 -eq in Brazil and by 129.17 Mt CO 2 -eq in North America. The simulated policy shows that promoting extensive livestock per se does not meet the objectives of the Common Agricultural Policy and the EU Green Deal. The TRS should be complemented with policies to foster crop diversification and promote the use of domestic feed sources (e.g., legumes) to effectively ensure feed self-sufficiency and that extensive cattle production in the EU does not lead to deforestation in carbon-rich countries. Endemic sheep and cattle diseases represent a constant strain and impact to animal health and welfare, the environment, public health, and the economy. Quantifying this impact helps to inform decisions on surveillance and control of livestock diseases. This systematic literature review had two objectives; to describe the economic impact of endemic sheep and cattle diseases in the United Kingdom using a broad conceptualisation of impact, and to investigate what variables (e.g. medication costs, loss of production) and methods are included in these calculations. The Prisma protocol for systematic literature reviews was followed. Searches were performed in Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science using selected and trialled search terms. A total of 1129 papers were identified and screened for relevancy; 38 papers were selected for full review extracting and analysing data on disease, impact and methods. From this final selection of papers it was found that; 1) research in this area is mainly focused on the dairy sub-sector, 2) the most mentioned diseases were mastitis and lameness in dairy cattle; bovine viral diarrhoea in beef cattle; and ectoparasites in sheep with reported animal-level costs of £ 77-£ 548/cow/year, £ 26-£ 185/bovine animal/year and £ 40-£ 47/ewe/year, respectively, 3) numerous methods and variables were used to calculate or estimate the economic impact with most studies focussing on the direct producer impacts and less on the wider implications and affected stakeholders; and 4) it was common for studies to look at one disease in isolation rather than consider disease impact on the farm as a whole. It is recommended that future economic impact calculations on livestock disease include wider implications to estimate the true cost of disease. To generate the necessary data, a wider, more inclusive conceptualisation of impact will be needed to support the collection of data and facilitate communication between stakeholders. Systematic health data recording combined with assessment calculations and metrics that allow comparability within or across livestock sub-sectors will increase the informative value of these impact calculations. • Research is heavily weighted towards the dairy industry. • The range in costs demonstrates work is still needed to reduce the avoidable costs. • Few externalities are captured thereby underestimating the societal impact. • Disease interactions and total disease burden on farm needs to be considered. The objectives of this study were to evaluate (1) the performance of an automated health-monitoring system (AHMS) to identify cows with metritis based on an alert system (health index score, HIS) that combines rumination time and physical activity; (2) the number of days between the first HIS alert and clinical diagnosis (CD) of metritis by farm personnel; and (3) the daily rumination time, physical activity, and HIS patterns around CD. In this manuscript, the overall performance of HIS to detect cows with all disorders of interest in this study [ketosis, displaced abomasum, indigestion (companion paper, part I), mastitis (companion paper, part II), and metritis] is also reported. Holstein cattle (n = 1,121; 451 nulliparous and 670 multiparous) were fitted with a neck-mounted electronic rumination and activity monitoring tag (HR Tags, SCR Dairy, Netanya, Israel) from at least -21 to 80 d in milk (DIM). Raw data collected in 2-h periods were summarized per 24 h as daily rumination and activity. An HIS (0 to 100 arbitrary units) was calculated daily for individual cows with an algorithm that used rumination and activity. A positive HIS outcome was defined as an HIS of <86 units during at least 1 d from -5 to 2 d after CD. Blood concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids, β-hydroxybutyrate, total calcium, and haptoglobin were determined in a subgroup of cows (n = 459) at -11 ± 3, -4 ± 3, 0, 3 ± 1, 7 ± 1, 14 ± 1, and 28 ± 1 DIM. The overall sensitivity of HIS was 55% for all cases of metritis (n = 349), but it was greater for cows with metritis and another disorder (78%) than for cows with metritis only (53%). Cows diagnosed with metritis and flagged based on HIS had substantial alterations in their rumination, activity, and HIS patterns around CD, alterations of blood markers of metabolic and health status around calving, reduced milk production, and were more likely to exit the herd than cows not flagged based on the HIS and cows without disease, suggesting that cows flagged based on the HIS had a more severe episode of metritis. Including all disorders of interest for this study, the overall sensitivity was 59%, specificity was 98%, positive predictive value was 58%, negative predictive value was 98%, and accuracy was 96%. The AHMS was effective for identifying cows with severe cases of metritis, but less effective for identifying cows with mild cases of metritis. Also, the overall accuracy and timing of the AHMS alerts for cows with health disorders indicated that AHMS that combine rumination and activity could be a useful tool for identifying cows with metabolic and digestive disorders, and more severe cases of mastitis and metritis. Baccharis coridifolia is one of the most common poisonous plants affecting livestock in Uruguay. Poisoning occurs when animals raised in areas free of B. coridifolia are transported to pastures containing the plant. Young stock become spontaneously averted to it after ingesting non-toxic amounts of the plant. As B. coridifolia is widespread in the country, farmers selling livestock report when animals have been raised in areas with the plant, meaning that they are naturally averted and will not ingest it if introduced in B. coridifolia -containing paddocks. Of 2456 farmers from 18 departments of Uruguay selling cattle through online auctions between June 2019 and May 2020, 78% mentioned that the animals they were selling were raised in grasslands containing B. coridifolia. However, only 35.8% of the farmers from three departments of Eastern Uruguay mentioned that their cattle were raised in grasslands with B. coridifolia. Herds from these departments presented 16.7 times (95% CI: 13.1–21.3; p < 0.001) more risk of not being naturally averted to B. coridifolia ingestion than the herds of the other 15 departments of the country. In this paper we review all outbreaks of B. coridifolia poisoning reported in livestock in Uruguay from 1911 to present. We also describe three outbreaks of poisoning, one in cattle and two in sheep that were poisoned in the same farms in which the animals were raised. Intoxication occurred when the animals raised indoors and/or in cultivated pastures without B. coridifolia were introduced into grasslands of the same farms containing B. coridifolia. Typical gastrointestinal lesions were observed in pathological examinations. Cattle are diurnal and distributed all over the world. They are true ruminants and exhibit several behaviors, namely, foraging, reproductive, social, maternal care, dominance, cognitive behavior, and so on. Foraging behavior is essential for their survival, growth, and reproductive fitness. A review of the literature reveals that in most of the research papers and projects, the study of cattle behavior has not been one of the primary objectives of the research—most of the documents focused on foraging and reproductive behavior from the angle of economic prospective only. The Scopus and other searches revealed only 2 publications on street/stray cattle. Street/stray cattle are the perfect model to study their changing behavior during urbanization. Mastitis is one of the most common diseases in dairy cows and has a negative impact on their welfare and life, causing significant economic losses to the dairy industry. Many attempts have been made to develop a detection method for mastitis using thermal infrared thermography. However, the use of this detection technique to determine the health of the cow's udder is susceptible to external factors, resulting in inaccurate detection of dairy cow mastitis. Therefore, this study explored a new and comprehensive detection method of dairy cow mastitis based on infrared thermal images. This method combined the left and right udder skin surface temperature (USST) difference detection method with the ocular surface temperature and USST difference detection method with improvements. The effect of external factors on dairy cow USST was effectively reduced. In addition, after comparing different target localisation algorithms, this paper used the You Only Look Once v5 (YOLOv5) deep learning network model to obtain the temperature information of eyes and udders, and mastitis detection of dairy cows was performed. A total of 105 dairy cows passing through a passage were randomly selected from the thermal infrared video and detected by the new and comprehensive detection method, and the results of cow mastitis detection were compared with somatic cell count. The results showed that the accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity of mastitis detection were 87.62, 84.62, and 96.30%, respectively. Using the YOLOv5 deep learning network model to locate the key parts of the cow had a good effect, with an average accuracy of 96.1%, and an average frame rate of 116.3f/s. The detection accuracy of dairy cow mastitis by deep learning technology combined with the detection method in this paper reached 85.71%. The results showed that the new and comprehensive detection method based on infrared thermal images can be used for the detection of dairy cow mastitis with high detection accuracy. This method can reduce the influence of external factors and can be integrated into the automatic identification system of dairy mastitis based on YOLOv5 to realise on-site monitoring of dairy mastitis. Our objective was to develop and validate a tool integrating a disposable fluorescence-based lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) coupled with a portable imaging device for estimating circulating plasma concentrations of progesterone (P4). First, we developed and optimized a competitive LFIA test strip to measure P4 in bovine plasma. The LFIA design included a sample pad, a conjugate pad that stores R-phycoerythrin-anti-P4 conjugates, a glass-fiber spacer pad, a nitrocellulose membrane with printed test and control lines, and a cellulose-fiber absorbent pad. To perform a test, 20 µL of plasma and 50 µL of running buffer were added on the sample pad. After 3 min, 45 µL of running buffer was added to initiate sample flow. After allowing 15 min to stabilize the colorimetric signal, strips were introduced in an LFIA portable reader wirelessly linked to a laptop to determine P4 concentration based on test-to-control-line signal (T/C ratio). In a series of experiments (n = 6), the ability of the LFIA to differentiate plasma samples with ≥1 or <1 ng/mL of P4 was evaluated. For each experiment, a calibration curve was constructed using plasma with known concentrations of P4 (0.1 to 3.7 ng/mL; n = 5). The resulting linear equation was then used to determine a T/C ratio cutoff to differentiate samples with ≥1 or <1 ng/mL of P4. In addition, to evaluate the ability of the platform to assign samples to P4 concentration groups without a calibration curve for individual batches, we performed a receiver operating characteristic analysis to identify a single cutoff value for T/C ratio that could potentially be used for all batches. Overall, calibration curves showed a linear relationship between T/C ratio and P4 levels (mean coefficient of determination = 0.74; range 0.42 to 0.99). Next, plasma samples from lactating dairy cows (n = 58) were tested in triplicate to determine the ability of the LFIA system to differentiate plasma samples with ≥1 or <1 ng/mL of P4 using a RIA for P4 as reference test. Overall, the LFIA assay correctly classified 90% of the samples, with 97% sensitivity, 83% specificity, 85% positive predictive value, and 96% negative predictive value. Agreement between the tests was substantial (kappa = 0.79; 95% confidence interval 0.64 to 0.95). When using a single cutoff value for T/C ratio selected by receiver operating characteristic analysis, sensitivity and specificity to determine CL presence were 97 (95% confidence interval 82 to 99) and 79% (95% confidence interval 60 to 92), respectively. Rhipicephalus microplus is the most widely distributed tick worldwide and causes significant economic losses in the livestock industry. It directly affects hosts (especially in large infestations) by feeding on blood and piercing the skin and indirectly affects hosts as a vector of pathogens that cause infectious diseases, such as bovine babesiosis. Current research on the control of ticks is focused on integrated tick control programmes, including vaccination treatment with acaricides and completely blocking pathogen transmission. Our previous studies showed that R. microplus VDAC (BmVDAC) expression is modulated by Babesia bigemina infection. VDAC is a mitochondrial protein with multiple functions in addition to its primary role as a central component of the apoptotic machinery. In this paper, we evaluated BmVDAC as an anti-tick vaccine and its capacity to block the infection of Babesia bigemina in ticks. Our results demonstrate that rBmVDAC is immunogenic and that antibodies specifically recognize the native protein from midguts of R. microplus. Immunization with rBmVDAC afforded an 82% efficacy against R. microplus infestation in the group of vaccinated cattle compared with the control group. In contrast, rBmVDAC showed a lower efficacy of 34% against tick infestation in cattle vaccinated with rBmVDAC, infested with R. microplus and infected with B. bigemina. The main effect on ticks fed in vaccinated and infected cattle was a 34% reduction in egg fertility (DF) compared to ticks fed on the control group. There was no reduction in the B. bigemina parasite levels of ticks fed on rBmVDAC-vaccinated cattle. Lactose is a sugar uniquely found in mammals' milk and it is the major milk solid in bovines. Lactose yield (LY, kg/d) is responsible for milk volume, whereas lactose percentage (LP) is thought to be more related to epithelial integrity and thus to udder health. There is a paucity of studies that have investigated lactose at the genomic level in dairy cows. This paper aimed to improve our knowledge on LP and LY, providing new insights into the significant genomic regions affecting these traits. A genome-wide association study for LP and LY was carried out in Fleckvieh cattle by using bulls' deregressed estimated breeding values of first lactation as pseudo-phenotypes. Heritabilities of first-lactation test-day LP and LY estimated using linear animal models were 0.38 and 0.25, respectively. A total of 2,854 bulls genotyped with a 54K SNP chip were available for the genome-wide association study; a linear mixed model approach was adopted for the analysis. The significant SNP of LP were scattered across the whole genome, with signals on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 7, 12, 16, 18, 19, 20, 28, and 29; the top 4 significant SNP explained 4.90% of the LP genetic variance. The signals were mostly in regions or genes with involvement in molecular intra- or extracellular transport; for example, CDH5 , RASGEF1C , ABCA6 , and SLC35F3. A significant region within chromosome 20 was previously shown to affect mastitis or somatic cell score in cattle. As regards LY, the significant SNP were concentrated in fewer regions (chromosomes 6 and 14), related to mastitis/somatic cell score, immune response, and transport mechanisms. The 5 most significant SNP for LY explained 8.45% of genetic variance and more than one-quarter of this value has to be attributed to the variant within ADGRB1. Significant peaks in target regions remained even after adjustment for the 2 most significant variants previously detected on BTA6 and BTA14. The present study is a prelude for deeper investigations into the biological role of lactose for milk secretion and volume determination, stressing the connection with genes regulating intra- or extracellular trafficking and immune and inflammatory responses in dairy cows. Also, these results improve the knowledge on the relationship between lactose and udder health; they support the idea that LP and its derived traits are potential candidates as indicators of udder health in breeding programs aimed to enhance cows' resistance to mastitis. Amaranthus spp. is a nephrotoxic plant with unknown toxic principle, affecting production animals worldwide, mainly in South America. The aim of this paper is to describe 5 spontaneous outbreaks of A. hybridus intoxication in beef cattle, where 7 autopsies were performed. Main gross findings were pale diffuse and enlarged kidneys. Microscopically, kidneys were characterized by severe tubular acute to subacute nephrosis, with dilatated tubules showing different degrees of epithelial degeneration and necrosis, and containing intraluminal eosinophilic hyaline casts. Intratubular birefringent crystals, compatible with oxalate, were observed under polarized light in kidneys from 3 autopsies. Positive von Kossa and red alizarin S staining confirmed the intratubular crystals as calcium deposits. This intoxication occurs mainly in stubble paddocks during summer and early autumn. The data from the present study suggests that oxalates were related to nephrotoxicity due to Amaranthus consumption. In this paper we present the results of archaeological research at the Late Stone Age site of Diallowali, located along the western edge of the Middle Senegal Valley, northern Senegal. As the occupation spans the period between 3100-2400 years BP, it is contemporary with few other West African sites, and therefore represents a unique – and uniquely detailed – archive. Excavations conducted between 2014–2017 revealed deeply stratified and dense deposits, yielding more than 5,000 kg of pottery and 169 kg of faunal material – the largest faunal assemblage of any site in West Africa. Thus, the present study focuses on the zooarchaeological data and their implications for shifting environmental conditions, subsistence practices, and social institutions at the site. The faunal assemblage reflects the exploitation of a remarkable diversity of wild animals, including a range of bovids, suids, carnivores, rodents, hippopotami, birds, and various aquatic resources – representing local conditions at the end of the African Humid Period. Interestingly, the consistent presence of domestic livestock, as well as Bos taurus figurines and ceramic 'arm-bands' throughout the occupation support a connection to Saharan agro-pastoral communities possibly escaping the Late Holocene aridification. Therefore, the keeping of low numbers of Bos taurus and Ovis/Capra , while maintaining a high reliance on hunting, fishing, and gathering wild plants, likely functioned as a risk-buffering strategy to manage against environmentally unpredictable periods. After several years of implementation, the original Welfare Quality scoring model for dairy cows appears to be highly sensitive to the number and cleanliness of drinkers and not enough to the prevalence of diseases, and as a consequence may not fit the opinion of some animal welfare experts. The present paper aims to improve the Welfare Quality calculations for the criteria 'Absence of prolonged thirst' and 'Absence of disease' in dairy cows, so that the results are more sensitive to input data and better fit experts' opinion. First, we modified the calculation of 'Absence of prolonged thirst' by linearising the calculation for drinkers' availability to avoid threshold effects. Second, we modified the calculation of 'Absence of disease' by applying a Choquet integral on the three lowest spline-based scores for each health disorder to limit compensation between health disorders. Third, we performed a global sensitivity analysis of the original and the alternative scoring models. Fourth, we compared the results obtained with the original and the alternative models with eight experts' opinions on two subsets composed of 44 and 60 farms, respectively, inspected using the Welfare Quality protocol and on which experts gave their opinion on the overall level of animal welfare. Results show that the alternative model significantly reduced the 'threshold effects' related to the number of drinkers and the compensation between health disorders. On the first subset, the alternative model fits the experts' opinion slightly better than the original model (P = 0.061). On the second subset, the models performed equally. In conclusion, the proposed refinements for calculating scores are validated since they significantly reduced 'threshold effects' and the influence of measures related to drinkers. It also reduced the compensation between health disorders by considering only the three lowest scores and thus increasing the influence of measures related to health disorders, and slightly improve at overall score level the accordance with experts' opinion. Bovine parasitic sadness, comprised of the diseases babesiosis and anaplasmosis, has a large impact on cattle farming in several countries, as it compromises animal productivity. Using systematic review (SR)-meta-analysis (MA) methodology, our objective was to summarize and to investigate study characteristics associated with prevalence of Babesia spp. and Anaplasma marginale infection in Latin American cattle herds. Five electronic databases were used. The inclusion criteria were studies that assessed the prevalence of Babesia spp. and A. marginale in cattle in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia, and Mexico. The reported prevalences were converted to logistic scale and summarized using random effects MA. The heterogeneity was assessed, separately, for papers from Brazil and from the remaining countries. A total of 28 papers were included in this MA with a high heterogeneity (I2 > 95%). The prevalences of A. marginale, Babesia spp., and their co-infections, in Latin America, were 48.9% (95% CI: 30.3–67.8%), 39.8% (95% CI: 24.6–57.2%), and 26.1% (95% CI: 9.1–55.8%), respectively. The prevalence of A. marginale was higher due to the high prevalence of this agent in Mexico (67.1%). In Brazil, the prevalence was 36.6% for A. marginale , 62.6% for Babesia spp., and 8.2% for their co-infections. The North region of Brazil was reported with the highest prevalence for A. marginale (71.9%), while for Babesia spp., the prevalence was considerably divergent between regions, with the highest values also observed in the North region (97.4%), and the lowest in the South region (9.5%). For studies of Babesia spp. in cattle in Latin America, the heterogeneity was mainly explained by the diagnostic method (98.0%), and country (54.8%). When looking at Brazil alone, a similar pattern was observed, but with lower values (i.e., diagnostic method, 31.5%; region, 25.3%; and climate, 12,4%). The evaluated regions presented different levels of prevalence infections, with most of them being classified as high degree of enzootic instability, which can predispose to the occurrence of outbreaks. This paper proposes a cattle face recognition model based on a two-branch convolutional neural network (TB-CNN). The collected two cattle face images from different angles are input to the convolutional neural network of different channels for feature extraction, the features of the two channels are feature fused, and the global average pooling layer is combined with the classifier to identify the individual cattle. The squeeze-and-excitation block (SE) is embedded in the feature extraction network in the network model to improve the network feature extraction capability. The global average pooling layer is used to replace the fully connected layer, which improves the network classification capability and reduces the number of network parameters. The experimental results show that the recognition rate of the cattle face recognition model based on the TB-CNN is 99.85% on the Simmental beef cattle face image dataset, 99.81% on the Holstein cow face image dataset, and 99.71% on the beef cattle and cow mixed dataset. Therefore, a lightweight neural network is designed in this paper that can be deployed in embedded systems that requires a small amount of weight representations and low-cost operators. The lightweight neural network designed in this paper contains six convolutional layers, which the convolution with a step size of two is used to achieve pooling, the Batch Normalization algorithm is used to normalize the neural network input, the dropout layer is used after the activation function Relu, and global average pooling is used to replace the fully connected layer after the sixth convolutional layer. The final parameter is 0.17 M, the model size is 2.01 MB, and the MFLOPs is 9.17. We have collected 10,239 cattle face images (103 subjects) from actual cattle farms to construct a dataset. The experimental results show that the accuracy of our proposed model is 98.37%, the macro average is 98%, and the Grad-CAM algorithm is used to verify the adequacy of features extracted by this network and avoid extracting noise features. The model we proposed is transplanted to the Raspberry Pi after training on the PC to test the running time, the model we proposed achieves a minimum detection time of 300 ms per picture. Our experiment results show that the lightweight neural network we proposed can achieve high recognition accuracy for cattle face recognition and significantly reduce the computational cost. Abstract: Neospora caninum is regarded as one of the most important infectious causes of abortions in cattle worldwide, yet the global economic impact of the infection has not been established. A systematic review of the economic impact of N. caninum infections/abortions was conducted, searching PubMed with the terms ‘cattle’ and ‘Neospora’. This yielded 769 publications and the abstracts were screened for economically relevant information (e.g. abortion prevalence and risk, serological prevalence). Further analysis was restricted to countries with at least five relevant publications. In total, 99 studies (12.9%) from 10 countries contained data from the beef industry (25 papers (25.3%)) and 72 papers (72.8%) from the dairy industry (with the remaining two papers (2.0%) describing general abortion statistics). The total annual cost of N. caninum infections/abortions was estimated to range from a median US $1.1 million in the New Zealand beef industry to an estimated median total of US $546.3 million impact per annum in the US dairy population. The estimate for the total median N. caninum-related losses exceeded US $1.298 billion per annum, ranging as high as US $2.380 billion. Nearly two-thirds of the losses were incurred by the dairy industry (US $842.9 million). Annual losses on individual dairy farms were estimated to reach a median of US $1,600.00, while on beef farms these costs amounted to just US $150.00. Pregnant cows and heifers were estimated to incur, on average, a loss due to N. caninum of less than US $20.00 for dairy and less than US $5.00 for beef. These loss estimates, however, rose to ∼US $110.00 and US $40.00, respectively, for N. caninum-infected pregnant dairy and beef cows. This estimate of global losses due to N. caninum, with the identification of clear target markets (countries, as well as cattle industries), should provide an incentive to develop treatment options and/or vaccines. The aim of this study was to collate and review the peer and non-peer reviewed English language literature on the treatment and prevention of foot lameness in cattle published since January 2000. The study aimed to identify deficits in knowledge and areas of disparity between what is recommended in the field by veterinarians, foot trimmers and advisors and what has been substantiated experimentally. Peer reviewed literature containing original work was gathered by searching three databases. Papers were categorised and reviewed if they contained material on treatment or prevention. Non-peer reviewed clinical materials were collated from a range of sources. The materials were reviewed and categorised based on whether they recommended a range of possible treatment and prevention strategies. The peer reviewed data base contained 591 papers, of which 286 contained information on treatment or prevention. The vast majority of papers (258) concerned prevention; only a small number covered treatment (31) and of these only three contained information on the treatment of sole ulcers or white line disease. The number of intervention studies and trials was low; most papers on prevention were observational. Generally, lesion specific outcomes were not described making the findings of these papers difficult to use clinically. The non-peer reviewed material contained 46 sources; they varied significantly in regard to the treatments they advocated with some texts directly contradicting each other. Some aspects of prevention recommended in these sources seemed poorly supported by findings from the research literature. Well designed intervention studies are required to address these deficits. Abstract: This paper is conceptually grounded in feminist–posthumanist intersectionality, offering an empirical case study that is geographic in scope, balances discursive and material elements, focuses on gender–species relations, and details dynamics of othering and privileging. It is empirically situated in a case study featuring women and chickens, men and cattle in the southern African nation of Botswana. It considers their symbolic associations with certain social realms, their spatial placements into and within particular locales, and the resulting context-specific dynamics that occur and shape their daily lives and interrelations with one another. Such socio-spatial practices are the means through which men, women, chickens and cattle become privileged and/or othered within dominant gender–species hierarchical arrangements. The paper also explores emerging urban and commercial agriculture spaces in contemporary Botswana, which empower women and chickens through increased access to land and productive activities, and increased visibility, status and value. The objective of this paper is to review the existing literature regarding the advantages and disadvantages that different weaning practices have on the stress responses and productivity of water buffalo in different breeding systems. On farms where water buffalo are bred for milk production, early weaning favors the amount of milk produced, reduces breeding costs and improves the reproductive rate. However, this early separation may be associated with the restriction of colostrum and essential nutrients for water buffalo calves, which cannot be replaced by the use of milk replacers made for cattle. Consequently, colostrum restriction can lead to an increase in disease susceptibility, high mortality rates and compromises future performance. In addition, mothers show a more temperamental behavior, making milk ejection difficult due to the anatomical characteristics of the udder in this species. On the other hand, a continuous suckling system may be more beneficial to weight, immune status, and welfare of calves but may cause economic losses due to delayed postpartum estrus. The results in terms of susceptibility to stress are contradictory; some authors conclude that separation between mother and calves does not generate stress, as long as weaning is carried out within the first hours or days after birth (3–6 days old) after colostrum intake, compared to weaning at 45 and 90 days. However, these calves have greater difficulty in learning to eat on their own and show an increase in abnormal behaviors. The most commonly utilized form of weaning is abrupt. Behavioral and physiological indicators suggest that abrupt weaning is stressful for both the mother and the offspring. The protocols for performing gradual weaning seem to offer advantages in reducing stress in buffalo compared to abrupt weaning. On buffalo farms, calf management is one of the critical points of breeding, therefore, more studies are required to improve current breeding systems and promote the welfare of water buffalo calves. Accumulating evidence suggests that human infections caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are increasing worldwide, indicating that NTM disease is no longer uncommon in many countries. As a result of an increasing emphasis on the importance of differential identification of NTM species, several molecular tools have recently been introduced in clinical and experimental settings. These advances have led to a much better understanding of the diversity of NTM species with regard to clinical aspects and the potential factors responsible for drug resistance that influence the different outcomes of NTM disease. In this paper, we review currently available molecular diagnostics for identification and differentiation of NTM species by summarizing data from recently applied methods, including commercially available assays, and their relevant strengths and weaknesses. We also highlight drug resistance-associated genes in clinically important NTM species. Paratuberculosis (PTB) is a well-documented chronic and sometimes fatal infection that affects the small intestine of ruminants both in captive and free-ranging living conditions. Although the infection has been detected on small ruminant farms worldwide, epidemiological and risk factor information regarding Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) infection on semi-extensive sheep and goat farms is generally still scarce, particularly in the Mediterranean area and in Italy. This paper reports the epidemiological findings and risk factors of the infection on semi-extensive sheep and goat farms in Apulia. It particularly focuses on the involvement of biological, structural and management factors, as well as the farmers' socioeconomic data as predisposing causes of PTB, and investigates their possible connection with the survivability of the infection. The true seroprevalence values of MAP on semi-extensive Apulian sheep and goat farms are reported and the risk factors causing the spread of infection analyzed. Data were collected through a two-year survey over the whole regional area, involving 419 farms, 16,903 sheep and 9369 goats. The epidemiological results showed a true seroprevalence of 66.2% for flocks and of 9.7% at the animal level. Analysis of the risk factors showed that the spread of infection occurs via several concomitant biological, managerial, and farmer-related factors. The survey highlighted the need for urgent and suitable control plans providing guidelines to help Apulian farmers and their veterinarians contain and eliminate the disease, prevent biological risks for animal and humans as well as negative economic effects on the regional livestock sector. Highlights • BAEP had discriminative ability to detect changes in hearing thresholds. • The auditory parameters in early calves were similar those described in adult cows. • BAEP is a qualitative and quantitative method minimally-invasive to evaluate hearing. Abstract Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) are useful to diagnose neurologic and genetic disorders in cattle but normal parameters and its application to detect changes in hearing are not demonstrated. The aims of this study were to develop a protocol for obtaining BAEP in Holstein calves and to establish the normal parameters of peak latencies, interpeak latencies (IPL) and waveforms of BAEP in this species. Ten male Holstein calves, aged 2.5 months and weighting 90.7 ± 4.0 kg were used. All animals were previously sedated with 0.08 mg/kg xylazine hydrochloride administered intramuscularly. The BAEP analysis was recorded using the IHS SmartEP-ASSR program connected with electrode needles placed on the standardized locations of the animal's head. Monoaurally presented broadband click stimuli (0.1 ms) were used for BAEP stimulation, with contralateral masking of 30 dB SPL. Stimuli were presented at a rate of 35.5 pulses per second (PPS) and evoked responses were collected and averaged 450–1500 times for each sound intensity. Earphones were inserted into the ear canal to present the acoustic stimulus and to attenuate environmental noise. Peak latencies, IPL, waveforms and auditory thresholds were recorded and analyzed in the right ear and were like those described in previous papers in adult male bulls. Auditory thresholds obtained in all animals were 33 ± 1.5 dB SPL. Peak latencies were 1.4 ± 0.07 ms (Peak I), 2.4 ± 0.10 ms (Peak II), 3.3 ± 0.10 ms (Peak III), 4.4 ± 0.19 ms (Peak IV) and 5.6 ± 0.28 ms (Peak V). IPL were 1.9 ± 0.12 ms (IPL I-III), 4.1 ± 0.29 ms (IPL I-V), 2.2 ± 0.19 ms (IPL II-V) and 2.2 ± 0.19 ms (IPL III-V). Brainstem auditory evoked potentials are a minimally-invasive method to evaluate level of audition in Holstein calves.
