Native Americans residing in remote reservation communities find strength in connection to place, culture, language, and sovereignty; they also face challenges as their communities struggle with historical and contemporary traumas that have resulted in poverty, high crime and suicide rates and drug misuse. The psychological well-being of Head Start teachers who teach and support the needs of Native American children, is overlooked. Qualitative interviews (n = 18) and focus groups (n = 9) were conducted with Head Start teachers, supervisors, parents, and ancillary staff to identify risk and protective factors at each level of the socioecological model (individual, relationships, community, society). Using content analysis and F4 analyse software two coders identified recurring themes. Individually teachers are resilient, focused more on the children's well-being than their own. Family was both significant support and stressor. Community struggles with drug and alcohol misuse and homelessness were the most frequent stressors. Workplace support included their supervisors and the mentorship they provided each other. Spirituality in the form traditional cultural practices, prayer and Christen faith were important sources of support and well-being. This paper provides insight into the stress and coping mechanisms of reservation-based Head Start teachers, identifying ways to protect and promote their health and well-being. The impact of culture on non-kin cooperation has been singled out as critical for economic activity. However, causal evidence of culture's influence on cooperation remains scant. In this paper we provide such evidence, focusing on two key components of culture: preferences and beliefs. Adopting the view that culture is one aspect of an individual's multi-faceted self-concept (identity) we conduct a Prisoner's Dilemma experiment with first- and second-generation Chinese immigrants at a large US public university. In a two-by-two design, we exogenously vary: i) the salience of participants' American or Chinese cultural identities; and ii) the capacity for culture to affect beliefs by randomly providing previous-session cooperation-rate information. • Studying Filipino interpretations of the paranormal expands the scope of parapsychology, adding more nuance and humanity. • There is a lack of local interest in investigating the paranormal, and foreign researchers often ignore cultural subtleties. • The scientist's approach must be culturally-appropriate, and the data must always be placed in its proper context. The many well-documented cases of paranormal phenomena in the Philippines may be interpreted as manifestations of the intuitive and deeply empathic interpersonal dynamics of Filipinos and the seemingly transpersonal nature of their individual psyches. This paper investigates how China's long tradition of wetland rice farming affects contemporary cooperative behavior. We exploit a discontinuity in rice farming generated by a natural geographic boundary in China and find a significant positive impact on cooperative behavior today. An increase in the percentage of farmland devoted to rice farming significantly increases the frequency of mutual help in terms of borrowing and lending money, caring for each other's family members, and helping each other with job seeking and house construction. This paper investigates the effects of cultural origin on entrepreneurship. Using Swedish registry data on second-generation immigrants and risk appetite measures from the Global Preference Survey (GPS), we investigate whether risk preferences in parents' home countries affect entrepreneurship. We find that children of immigrants from more risk-loving cultures are more likely to start up a business, although of poorer quality. We also find that entrepreneurs with parents from cultures with higher risk appetite earn a lower personal income. Method: We use a qualitative study with a constructivist phenomenological approach consisting of 55 in-depth interviews with a diverse range of participants, including business owners, line managers and supervisors, OHS advisors, workers, and union representatives in Western Australia. A workplace vignette was used to elicit cultural norms derived from the participants' attitudes and beliefs, which were analyzed using NVivo software to conduct a thematic analysis to classify the interview text into specific concepts and phrases. Results: Findings confirm the three themes identified from our literature review and provide useful insights into the challenges faced by the participants in the implementation of safety policies. • Presents a case study of cultural policy in Taipei as a 'not so global' city. • Emphasises the importance of regional geographies of power and sub-state actors in shaping cultural strategy in Taipei. • Conceptualises Songshan creative park as a spatial para -diplomatic modality conveying national values and identity. Through a case study of Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, Xinyi District, Taipei (Taiwan), this paper contributes to debates in creative city building by emphasising the importance of regional power-dynamics in shaping such spaces; and conceptualising the resulting entities as para -diplomatic modalities. The paper is based on a synthesis of policy documentation and academic accounts; and qualitative interviews and ethnographic data collected between 2016 and 2024. The main argument of the paper is that the logics that underpin the development of creative cities should not be solely understood through the language of neoliberal globalization as has so often been the case elsewhere. Rather we provide an explanation that contextualises Taiwan's economic liberalisation, democratic ideals and cultural policy as emerging out of an absence of sovereign recognition, with particular reference to mainland China. We draw particular attention to the spatialisation of particular national values and identity in the development and operation of Songshan as a symbolic cultural space. In doing so we show how the park acts as a para -diplomatic modality managed by sub-state actors to spatialise and communicate values referring to cosmopolitanism, paternalism, and internationalism. • Childcare policy responses towards Covid-19 differed in European welfare states. • Policy responses cause informalization of childcare to different degrees. • Informalization of childcare is mainly connected with social risks for women. • Cultural and institutional differences help to understand varying policy responses. The closure of extra-familial childcare facilities by European governments in 2020 was an important part of interventions against the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. One consequence was that childcare was provided by parents at home, mainly by women. As a result, women mainly experienced financial and employment risks related to this "informalization" of childcare. The childcare policies of European welfare states differ in the extent to which they include measures to reduce the social risks related to informalization. Against this backdrop, this paper asks: How should one understand cross-national differences in childcare policies during the pandemic? We are also particularly interested in the effects of childcare policies on the social risks connected with the informalization of childcare and what these mean for the gendered division of paid work and care. Differences in childcare policies during the pandemic are commonly explained in terms of the path dependence of such policies. Using the theoretical approach of "care arrangement," this article introduces a broader theoretical framework that considers the role of cultural and institutional factors for understanding the cross-national differences in childcare policies during the pandemic. We introduce the findings of a comparative empirical study of childcare policies in three European welfare states—Denmark, Germany and England—that represent different types of care arrangements. This paper uses policy and media documents, quantitative data on childcare and women's employment, cultural ideas and secondary analysis of empirical studies. We find that governments did not per se respond to the pandemic based on institutional path dependence regarding childcare policies, while the integration of culture into the theoretical framework allows for a more comprehensive understanding. This paper aims to identify how cognitive and emotional self-regulation (SR) processes in infants from 0 to 36 months are defined within the Latin American academic context. A systematic review based on the PRISMA methodology was implemented to review the conceptual and operational definition of SR, the type of study, the country of origin of the authors, and the reference to the adequacy of the research to the specific cultural context of Latin America. Twenty-two papers that met the selection criteria were selected. The study identified four types of conceptual definitions for SR, each associated with different constructs or sets of constructs: executive functions, temperament, the integration of executive functions and temperament, and physiological homeostasis. These definitions were based on mainstream approaches to SR rather than being specific to the Latin American region. The study also found compatibility between the sample and some observed trends. On one hand, there was an underrepresentation of the Latin American population in high-impact publications on the subject. However, from 2010 to the present, there is evidence of growth in publications on SR in the analyzed sample. On the other hand, the sample also indicates a disparate representation of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in existing publications. Finally, concerning the adaptation to the cultural context of the research, a small number of studies addressed this variable in a specific and significant way. • This paper explores the association between income and stated views on minimum living standards. • Data from a large nationally representative survey reveal the rich deem fewer items to be essential. • At baseline, the bottom of the income distribution reports 10% more items as essential than the top. • Area-level inequality amplifies the negative income gradient; rich are equally uncaring for kids. • Views are stable, formed primarily in childhood, and have strong effects on views during adulthood. This paper explores the association between income and stated views on minimum living standards; that is, views on items and activities that no one in today's society should have to go without. Using data from a large nationally representative survey, we find the rich deem fewer items to be essential. In our baseline model, people at the bottom of the income distribution report 10% more items as essential than do people at the top of the income distribution. The negative relationship between income and recommended minimum living standards is robust to conditioning on a large covariate set, and remains evident when we use alternative measures of economic status, such as wealth and neighborhood advantage. We find that area-level income inequality amplifies the negative income gradient, and that the rich are no more considerate towards children than they are towards adults. We also find that changes in people's views across time are relatively small, and unrelated to major economic life events. An explanation for this stability is that views are formed primarily in childhood. This paper is the introduction to a cluster of articles on Cultural Biopolitics in Russia. After providing an overview of biopolitical theory and its recent applications to the study of Russian history and politics, the author introduces the notion of "cultural biopolitics" as a theoretical bridge between biopolitical theory and cultural studies. Culture is conceived as a realm of "soft" power in which biopolitical rationalities are reinforced or challanged. Given its many historical entanglements with power, Russian culture in particular provides a rich field of inquiry for scholars of modern biopolitics. The introduction concludes with short summaries of each of the articles in the cluster, which are divided into two categories: "Biopolitics of Writing" and "Biopolitical Performance". The MESOC Toolkit is a free and open-access online service used to aid the measurement of the societal value and impact of culture, currently under development as part of the MESOC (Measuring the Social Dimension of Culture) project. The goal of establishing transition variables that serve as impact measurement indicators is aided by an online document repository system of thematic publications (i.e., a collection of documents on the societal value and impact of cultural policies). It allows the users to input, manage, and search extensive document data based on the relevant criteria. The paper at hand paper describes the rationale behind the online document repository of the MESOC Toolkit, its implementation, and main functionalities. Furthermore, it offers an empirical evaluation of the benefits that such a system offers over non-automated procedures of document search and analysis. The results of the evaluation give way to the conclusion that there are time-saving and quality benefits for the users of the repository: efficiency in dealing with a large number of documents and quality in searching the documents using multiple criteria. In recent years, there has been renewed interest in diversifying the understanding and discussion about the causes of depression to move beyond biomedical determinism—a view that biomedical factors are the ultimate cause of an individual's depression. There is increasing emphasis on diversity in how people seek to articulate the causes of depression to incorporate non-biomedical dimensions. Furthermore, the biomedical understanding of depression has been increasingly questioned due especially to emerging limitations in pharmacotherapy. These shifts encourage social analyses that explore what narratives as to the causes of depression are constructed and presented with relative plausibility in different contexts and why and how. By analysing published memoirs of individuals diagnosed with depression in Japan, this study aims to provide fresh insights into narratives around the causes of depression. It illustrates how memoirs portray depression and its perceived causes in characteristic ways in a nation that adopts Western diagnostic systems, biomedical therapeutics and other relevant technologies. I will show that 'burnout' is the dominant theme in the Japanese data, diverging from the predominantly biomedical narrative in Western societies. This burnout narrative depicts depression as the somewhat unfortunate but unsurprising result of overwork arising from individual active adaptations to structural features of the Japanese work culture. I argue that reasons, rather than causes, articulate the making of the burnout narrative by revealing the interplay between the structural and individual and ultimately enrich the understanding of depression. The paper concludes with a call for exploring the shifting relationship between illness and normalcy that the burnout narrative implies. This paper centers last-mile distribution networks of cable television as a prism to analyze the political-economic, socio-spatial, and subjective transformations brought about by neoliberal reforms in India. I provide an on-ground perspective of enterprise culture and entrepreneurial citizenship based on an ethnography of Mumbai-based last-mile distributors of cable television also called cablewallahs. In the wake of their disempowerment in the television distribution value-chain, cablewallahs represent themselves as entrepreneurs at the core of India's digital economy. I combine insights from enterprise culture scholarship, television studies and anthropologies of masculinity, to shed light on this enactment in the paper. I demonstrate that cablewallahs configure their citizenship as 'entrepreneurial' by aspiring to middle-class valorised notions of respectability and civic duty and sustaining their last-mile networks through intimate knowledge of clientele, networks of male conviviality and vernacular solidarities. I argue that in Mumbai, entrepreneurial citizenship emerges as a useful gendered subjective disposition for navigating socio-economic marginalization and subjective-material changes in neighbourhood identity brought about by neoliberalization. There is a growing literature on the cultural capacities influencing communities' adaptation to environmental and social change, including the temporal frameworks they draw on for timely action. This paper focuses on seasonal cultures, and how they enable communities on the Coromandel Peninsula to interpret and adapt practical timings to disrupted patterns of seasonal rhythms. The paper develops and applies a conceptual framework of seasonal cultures as perceived rhythmic patterns practiced by communities as cultural repertoires for action, emphasising the ways cultures evolve as patterns are contested and change. This concept steered critical, mixed-method ethnographic study with communities on the peninsula over two years. The research found that Coromandel communities' cultures make seasonal change visible as long-term shifts and asynchrony between rhythmic patterns, which they linked to climatic change, environmental degradation, colonisation and globalisation, and shifting relations between society and the environment. As seasonal patterns fail to hold, communities deploy a combination of strategies for re-configuring seasonal rhythms through their practices: (i) maintaining established, institutionalised schemas of activity while coping with seasonal variability; (ii) season-proofing activities from environmental rhythms; or (iii) re-learning and recalibrating cultures to mutable configurations of rhythms in a highly modified environment. The bone industry of the Late Neolithic/Early Eneolithic Vinča culture was rich and diverse; different osseous raw materials (diverse skeletal elements) were used for the production of everyday items, weapons and ornaments. The selection of raw materials was usually strict – certain skeletal elements were consistently used for specific artefact types, often depending on their physical properties. The manufacturing techniques display a certain level of standardisation, in particular, the most common tool type, medium-sized pointed tools (awls), was generally produced by using the same manufacturing techniques and resulting in more or less standardised products. In this paper, an overview will be provided of manufacturing techniques used for the production of pointed tools from several Vinča culture sites: Vitkovo, Pločnik and Vinča – Belo Brdo, reconstruction of the chaîne opératoire , the morphological features of the subtypes and variants, and their overall cultural and economic importance will be discussed. The impacts of a CEO's social connections to a firm have received much attention. However, less is known on between-CEOs differences in building connections. This paper is a step towards filling this gap by investigating whether CEOs social connections are influenced by China's local alcohol drinking culture. We use the sample of Chinese listed companies to test our hypotheses. We find that CEOs whose firms are located in regions with strong alcohol drinking culture have more social connections, both inside and outside the firms. We further find that the drinking culture only significantly affects the social connections of male CEOs, but not female CEOs. These findings remain robust after accounting for endogeneity by instrumental variable approach and matched sample analysis. Mobile learning (m-learning) is gaining its importance in recent years. For libraries, it is inevitable to adapt to this trend and provide various information services and support for m-learning. This paper studies the m-learning usage of Library and Information Science (LIS) students, who will be the new blood for the library in future. In this paper, we invited 267 subjects from Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan to participate in our online survey. We found that LIS students from these regions do adopt communication tools and social media for m-learning. However, they less frequently use their smartphones for academic reading. Plus, they rely more on search engines for fulfilling their information needs instead of library resources. We also found that the lack of a mobile version of the library website constitutes a significant barrier in m-learning, but the lack of mobile apps is relatively acceptable by the respondents. The result of this study shows that there are no big differences in m-learning usage among the three regions, except that LIS students from Hong Kong are accessing the learning management platforms via their smartphones more frequently compared to students from Japan and Taiwan. This systematic review summarises the available evidence about how migrant women perceive and manage their menopausal and postmenopausal health and their experiences with healthcare services; and healthcare providers' views about delivering menopause-related healthcare to migrant women. Medline, PsychInfo, Embase and Cinahl were searched for peer-reviewed papers published in English. Thirty-one papers were identified reporting on 25 studies. Twenty-three studies reported on investigations examining migrant women's perceptions about menopause, their self-care strategies and their experiences with menopause-related healthcare. Only two papers reported on healthcare providers' views about providing menopause-related healthcare to migrant women. Most studies with migrant women found that their experiences of menopause and self-care strategies were culturally informed; that migrant women are unlikely to seek out menopause-related healthcare or to initiate conversations about menopause with their healthcare providers; and that most of those who seek menopause-related healthcare are disappointed with the care they receive. Studies assessing menopause-related knowledge found that many migrant women have limited knowledge about menopause and postmenopausal health, and that family and friends are their most common sources of information about menopause. Although healthcare providers were aware that migrant women use traditional remedies to manage their menopausal health and are likely to source menopause-related information from within their communities, they were reluctant to actively promote menopause-related health information due to consultation time constraints and lack of confidence in culturally competent communication. More research with healthcare providers is needed to improve understanding about barriers and facilitators to provide comprehensive menopause-related care to migrant women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper provides an overview of the results obtained from recent (2016–2017) archaeological investigations the Early Bronze age site of Karnut, located in the Shirak province, of northwestern Armenia. The main focus will be on the newly discovered Kura-Araxes burials and dwellings. A preliminary attempt will be made to address issues regarding the dating of the newly discovered materials, as well as to provide a first comparison with the results yielded by former excavations. New elements concerning burial practices at the site will then be discussed in the context of established frameworks of burial rituals as known from formerly investigated burial sites of the Kura-Araxes culture. Ultimately, the issues discussed in this paper highlight important future directions in the research on funerary practices in the Early Bronze Age South Caucasus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present research paper focuses on four key aspects of organizational culture in the United Arab Emirates (UAE): employee attitude, performance, behavior, and productivity. Every organization has a unique culture, which shapes the employees' perspectives to a large extent. The greater the consistency of the approach, the greater the likelihood of that organization achieving success. The main purpose of this study was to examine the influence of corporate culture on the behavior of heterogeneous groups of employees. The UAE, as an emerging economy, has various ethnicities and nationalities in its workforce, each having its own distinctive national customs, languages, religions, histories, and work patterns. This paper examines two cases in the remittances and foreign exchange industry in the UAE as being characteristic of finance companies, comprising employees who originated from many nations working together regardless of their socio-cultural background. Based on a questionnaire, the literature, and a hypothesized model, this paper investigates the relationship of UAE's heterogeneous work culture on employees' perspectives. In an innovative way, the result of this study reveals and supports our hypotheses that organizational culture has a high impact on the work performance, attitudes, and behaviors of the employees belonging to two selected companies, regardless heterogeneous nationalities and cultures. An increased focus on compassion was one of the recommendations in the Francis Report following an inquiry into failures of care at the Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust in 2010. Responses to the Francis report did not take up the question of what compassion meant and how its recommendations might be meaningfully implemented in radiography practice. As part of two wider doctoral research studies, the findings presented in this paper reveal patients and carers perspectives of how compassionate care is experienced, based on an exploration of their experiences, views and attitudes in order to better understand its meaning and application in radiographic practice. A constructivist approach was taken with appropriate ethical approval. Using a combination of interviews, focus groups, co-production workshops and online discussion forums the authors explored the experiences and opinions of patients and carers about compassion in radiotherapy and diagnostic imaging. Data were transcribed and analysed thematically. The thematically mapped findings are presented under four sub-themes: The values of caring vs the 'business' values of the NHS, Person-centred care, Characteristics of the radiographer and Compassion in the radiographer–patient interaction. Looking at compassion through a patient's lens has highlighted how person-centred care consists of components not attributable to radiographers alone. The personal values of a radiographer must not only align with those of the profession they seek to join, but the value placed on compassion must also be reflected in the environment in which they practice. Alignment signifies patients are part of a compassionate culture. Equal emphasis should be placed on both technical and caring practices in order to stop the profession being perceived as target-driven, rather than one which ensures patients are at the heart of practice. Pediatric palliative care teams seek to collaboratively promote the quality of life for children with serious medical illness in the context of the values expressed by the patient and family. Especially for infants with high medical fragility, shared decision making can be a complex task that often requires flexibility to respond to the clinical circumstances at hand, as well as contextualization within the family culture. In this paper, we present the case of an infant with a severe congenital brain malformation who was born in an American hospital to a Rohingya-speaking, Burmese family whose care preferences seemed to oscillate between comfort-focused and life-prolonging without clear acknowledgement of the consequences of shifting between treatment plans. Discussion of this case helps to illustrate the cultural factors, ethical challenges, and systems-level issues that can arise for medical teams in seeking to promote patient-centered care that respects family values while also honoring the principle of nonmaleficience. Sky Lake is a visionary environmental design that uses the natural geological cavities and excavated landscapes (from mining and large-scale 3D printing) on the Moon to provide enhanced living conditions for long-term Lunar inhabitants including scientists, construction workers, tourists, and leisure industry staff. Utilizing the ability of water to protect from radiation Sky Lake creates a layer of water above craters, quarries, and caves. The purpose of these large climatized spaces is to allow larger-scale terraforming experimentation including diverse biological environments that have controllable microclimates. Sky Lake will provide wider freedom of movement, the ability to work in sunlight, and even the possibility to create rain. This paper presents the Sky Lake concept and design. It explores the basic architectural and engineering viability for construction considering current and future technologies, including technological ideas that are being researched and worked on now for use in space in the next 50–150 years. The design incorporates ideas for sealing the regolith, a complete water cycle, and access from the Lunar surface. It explores the main criteria for locations bearing in mind the Moon's natural resources and optimal daylight hours. It discusses how Sky Lake can impact and accelerate the development of the new Moon society. Survey results indicate increasing safety culture scores at each level of the Safety ladder, while the accident risk decreases. The safety culture level was 12 points higher at Level 4, than in the Reference sample, and the accident risk at Level 4 was half the risk of Level 2. We conclude by suggesting the concrete management practices related to each level. Migration or resettlement to western nations frequently alters breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices. Infant feeding practices in traditional societies (originally from non-white countries) are ingrained within customary beliefs and practices. To understand maternal infant feeding experiences pre- and post-resettlement for the benefit of policy and healthcare practice. This meta-synthesis of qualitative studies on infant feeding experiences of migrant and refugee women in Australia adopted the Noblit and Hare aproach. CINAHL, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, Social Sciences, SCOPUS and PubMed databases from 1980 to 2018 were searched. Fourteen papers of the 218 retrieved met the inclusion criteria. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) tool was used to assess the quality of papers and data were synthesised through reciprocal translation. One overarching theme emerged: "Fitting-in" to nurture a healthy child in a new homeland. This theme composed of two major themes: beliefs about breast milk and breastfeeding; and beliefs about complementary feeding. In Australia, manufactured foods such as infant formula were often associated with modernism. Western hospital policies were seen as a deterrent to lactation, while familial disconnections and unfamiliarity with healthcare and societal norms undermined maternal infant feeding confidence. New to the scope of migratory infant feeding literature, this synthesis uncovers how migrants and refugees negotiated the western hierarchical structures differently due to issues of power differences. The 'Fitting-in' notion is best described through the socio-ecological model and maternal capital possessions. Sometimes an analysis of findings may not meet initial expectations. This outcome emerged after a six-month period of immersion in the life of a Chinese World Heritage Site. Both authors are familiar with the site – the first from living in the village and the second from visiting the village on many occasions for more than a decade. The paper describes a process of reflection and suggests this is rarely considered in the tourism academic literature. It indicates the outcomes of that process of reflection in coming to a much more Chinese centred cultural model of place meanings. Several clinical papers have provided clinical recommendations for how to provide cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for obsessive-compulsive symptoms among Orthodox Jewish individuals. However, no published studies have described culturally adapted CBT for anxiety or depression in this population or quantified the effectiveness of such approaches. We evaluated the effectiveness of CBT for symptoms of generalized anxiety and depression in a sample of Orthodox Jews (n = 65) and a comparison sample (n = 42) presenting to the Center for Anxiety, a private outpatient clinic with three offices in the New York area (www.centerforanxiety.org). A chart review revealed that all patients received CBT-based interventions with appropriate religious-cultural adaptations of treatment, which we present in two case studies. We observed statistically and clinically significant treatment gains from pretreatment to midtreatment (anxiety: t = 8.56, p <.001; depression: t = 8.01, p <.001), and again from midtreatment through termination (anxiety: t = 3.68, p <.001; depression: t = 3.62, p <.001). No significant differences in anxiety or depression were observed between Orthodox Jewish patients and controls at any time point or for treatment effects (anxiety: Wilks' Lambda =.950, F = 2.65, p =.076, η p 2 =.050; depression: Wilks' Lambda =.99, F = 2.00, p =.49, η p 2 =.014). Safety culture is, however, a fairly new regulatory concept, and it seems that knowledge is lacking on pros and cons and expected outcomes of strategies that regulatory authorities can use to improve safety culture. The aims of our study are therefore to: (1) Map descriptions of regulatory efforts to influence safety culture in companies; (2) Identify strategies employed by regulatory authorities to influence safety culture; (3) Describe (regulators' and companies') experiences with, and results of the strategies; (4) Discuss pros and cons of the strategies (possibilities and challenges). The paper also provides a more general discussion of whether it is possible to regulate safety culture, and subsequently what it means to regulate safety culture. The paper is based on experiences from three sectors that have introduced safety culture in their regulatory repertory: (1) The Norwegian petroleum industry, (2) North American rail, and (3) The nuclear industry. The experiences are studied in a systematic literature review reported according to PRISMA guidelines. Our discussion indicates that to include safety culture in the regulatory repertory may involve a range of different strategies, e.g. auditing safety culture, introducing new rules, providing information, providing assistance with self-measurements etc. The study identifies and discusses 5 rule-based and 6 advisory-based strategies that regulators may utilize when attempting to influence organizational safety culture. This paper builds on the recent increased interest in interpersonal relations and evaluative judgements, especially in relation to intercultural interaction. It explores three key questions: (1) what or who is evaluated; (2) what warrants underpin the evaluations; and (3) the role of culture, if any, in the evaluation process. It draws on work on norms and the moral order/moral foundations in pragmatics, moral psychology and cross-cultural psychology to help identify the key issues of debate. It then analyses some authentic intercultural business interaction data, along with follow-up comments from the participants, to gain insights into these questions. This short note outlines some of the rewards and frustrations that have arisen during my 40 years as a consultant in education – mainly, but not entirely, in higher education. It is a personal picture, with no pretence to be an academic paper. It is illustrated by references based on my own experience rather than references to the work of others. The note considers consultancy projects in two parts: first, the set up stage before the work really begins, and then the analysis stage. A primary problem in the set up stage is to determine with true clarity who is actually the 'client' for the work and who is the 'decision maker' about it. This is often no easy task and the answer is rarely simple – especially for projects that are commissioned and paid for by one party, but with the claimed intention being that they are for the benefit of another. During the work, conflicts of objectives can appear that were not apparent at the start, sometimes between the parties, sometimes within them. Difficulties can also arise from being a 'foreign' consultant, in terms of needing to understand – and to take into account, the local culture and ways of doing things – not least, interpretations of corruption. Sometimes an attempt is made to 'import' a solution developed for one country into another, which in my view is a disgrace. A very rewarding 'result' for any consultancy work is for the 'client' to think that the answer developed is 'obvious'. The note also reflects on the frequent uselessness of so-called 'hard data'. The paper concludes by drawing on the 40 years to say a few brief words about the world of higher education and the importance of leadership both by and within universities. This is followed by four examples of issues in education more generally which, in my view, have not yet been satisfactorily resolved. Depression in older people living in residential aged care is a serious and highly prevalent health issue, with loneliness and social isolation being major contributors. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the harm visiting restrictions have on the mental wellbeing of older people in residential aged care. However, there is a need to systematically review the relationship between family visits and depression in this population. This literature review seeks to explore the association between family visits and depression among those living in residential aged care. An integrative review was conducted in March 2022, based on a search of seven databases from inception to 2022. Papers were included if the studies were situated in a residential aged care facility and explored the impact of in-person family visits on depression of residents. Those that examined impact of family visits on community-dwelling older people and papers examining virtual family visits were excluded. The quality of the included papers was assessed using appropriate critical appraisal tools. Guided by the aim of this study, the included papers were narratively synthesised and presented thematically (PROSPERO ID CRD42022325895). Ten papers, published between 1991 and 2022, were included in the final synthesis. Multiple categorisations of frequency of visits and different scales were used to assess depression. Depression among residents in aged care facilities varied from 20 % to 58.7 % with 40 % of studies showing a positive association between the frequency of family visits and lower rate of depression. Three themes influencing the association between family visits and depression in residential aged care were identified. These were: (i) intersection of culture, filial values, and depression; (ii) resident-related factors including whether admission was voluntary and presence of functional impairment; and (iii) non-resident-related factors such as social activities for residents and staff involvement. Family visits ameliorated loneliness and depression among residents in aged care however, other factors such as culture, comorbidities and functional impairment, opportunities for socialisation and the social involvement of facility staff also influenced depression. Whilst the low number of studies reviewed limited comparison and generalisation of results, the review highlighted the broader and crucial role of healthcare staff in facilitating socialisation and promoting mental wellbeing of residents especially those who are not visited by families. Circular Economy (CE) builds on the Industrial Ecology (IE) framework by taking a comprehensive approach to reducing waste, pollution, and pressure on natural resources within the broader multi-stakeholder production-consumption loop. Despite the potential benefits of CE, previous research has identified technical, organizational, and institutional challenges that hinder its widespread adoption. In this paper, we investigate how the cultural dimension of CE (e.g., stakeholders, socioeconomic interactions, values, and institutions), as opposed to its technical dimension (e.g., industrial symbiosis, reduce, reuse and repair), were addressed in previous literature, and show how applying Dewey's pragmatist philosophy to CE can facilitate its adoption beyond idealistic aspirations. To do so, we conducted a content analysis of 69 studies focusing on the definition and implementation of CE from technical and cultural perspectives. The findings show that environmental and efficiency motivations alone are insufficient for the successful large-scale implementation of CE. The cultural dimension of CE, encompassing the stakeholders involved in the production-consumption loop, their social and spatial relations, as well as the institutions and policies that govern their economic activities, is also essential to consider for effective CE implementation as it can be impacted by and impact CE. Focusing on empathic behavior of Iranians, Americans, and Biculturals, this paper investigated how living as a bicultural in a culturally different environment affects situational empathy and intergroup empathy bias. Findings show participants' cultural background and group identity significantly impacted their empathic responsiveness in favor of people with collectivist cultural norms. Further, people raised in a socio-centric/collectivist society reported higher empathy for in-group members compared to those raised in an ego-centric/individualist society. Regardless of nationality, affective empathy was reported higher than cognitive empathy. The same trend was found for individualist cultural norms, especially for biculturals, suggesting there is a global trend of individualism. Implications are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents two studies which address an underdeveloped area within acculturation research: majority members' perceptions of cultural change. Specifically, drawing on the theory of cultural inertia, we explored how majority members react to perceptions of recent majority culture and minority cultures change. A path model was hypothesised whereby British and English majority members' perceptions that their British (Study 1, N = 266) and English (Study 2, N = 292) cultures are changing due to the presence of minority cultures was positively associated with symbolic threat, and through this with greater prejudice towards minorities living in the UK/England. However, participants' perceptions that minority cultures are changing due to influence from the majority culture were negatively associated with symbolic threat, and through this with less prejudice towards minorities. These findings were supported across different operationalizations of prejudice (i.e., social distance and positive/negative affect) and even when controlling for another recently introduced concept of meta-perceptions – that is, majority members' perceptions of whether minority members prefer majority members to maintain their culture and/or adopt to the minority cultures. Background: Integrating research with clinical practice is essential for evidence-based practice and continuous improvement in health care. Little is known about the research capacity and culture of the Australian hospital pharmacy workforce, particularly in rural areas and for pharmacy assistants/technicians.Objective: This paper aims to characterise the research capacity and culture of a state-wide public-hospital pharmacy service at organisation, team and individual levels, and to explore variables which influence research confidence and success.Method: An online, anonymous, cross-sectional survey using the validated Research Capacity in Context tool was emailed to all pharmacists, pharmacy assistants/technicians and non-clinical staff employed by a statewide pharmacy service in South Australia. Respondent characteristics and organisation, team and individual scores of research skill/success were summarised using descriptive statistics. T-tests compared results for pharmacists and pharmacy assistants/technicians and metropolitan-based and non-metropolitan-based staff. Regression analyses explored predictors of pharmacists individual research skill/success scores.Results: A response rate of 43.4% (n = 278/641, 19 sites) was obtained. Respondents were primarily pharmacists (68%) and pharmacy assistants/technicians (28%); 91% were practicing in a metropolitan setting. 47% reported no research experience. Highest scores for research skill/success were observed at the organisational level (mean score 6.0/10) vs. team (mean score 5.6/10) and individual levels (mean score 5.1/10). Within each level specific items that scored poorly were identified. Individual research skills/success scores were higher in pharmacists vs. pharmacy assistants/technicians (mean score 5.2/10 vs. 4.2/10, p < 0.01), and were not different between staff in metropolitan vs. non-metropolitan settings (mean scores 5.2 vs. 5.0, p = 0.77). For pharmacists, undertaking undergraduate or internship research projects or postgraduate research training were associated with higher individual scores of research skills and success.Discussion/conclusion: This research extends understanding of hospital pharmacy research capacity and culture, describes research skills and success in hospital pharmacy technicians/assistants for the first time and highlights low-scoring areas; these could be targeted to improve research capacity and culture at an individual, team and organisational levels. Sponsoring culture is a long-term profit-generating investment that public policy makers can achieve by means of Pigouvian subsidy or tax schemes. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the three VAT reforms implemented between 2012 and 2018 (one tax raise reform and two tax cut reforms) in the cultural sector in Spain. We first provide visual evidence and empirical estimates of the tax shifting and the distribution of the VAT burden between consumers and producers. We then use a regression discontinuity design to assess the causal effects of these VAT reforms on performing acts and cinema consumption (both in the extensive and the intensive margin). Several interesting findings arise from our results. First, we find that producers only passed through 45% of the VAT cut to consumer prices. Second, the effect of the 2017 VAT reduction on performing arts slightly increased the number of households consuming these cultural services, whereas the 2018 tax cut on cinema had no significant effect in the number of moviegoers (extensive margin). Third, the cultural spending per household conditional on participation (intensive margin) increased after the two VAT rate reductions. Finally, we test for asymmetries in pass-through with respect to the 2012 tax raise and we find (i) no evidence of prices responding more strongly to increases than to decreases in VAT, (ii) a symmetric response of the number of households consuming these cultural services, and (iii) an asymmetric response of the average cultural spending conditional on participation. African refugee youth and young adults live at the intersections of many structural barriers, including xenophobia, racism, and misogyny. In this conceptual paper, we present considerations for education scholars who seek to conduct research with and about African refugee postsecondary students. We start with a discussion of the discourse of Othering and racial stigma against Black-African people in high income countries. Next, we discuss the need for intersectional analysis in research by focusing on how gendered racism positions African women refugees as particularly vulnerable in higher education institutions. Then, we proceed to a discussion of how cultural heritage presents us with a counternarrative to xenophobic discourse. At each point, we present a set of critical questions that serve as a conceptual springboard for researchers that are exploring more deeply the issues that affect refugee youth and their education. The factors that inhibit and promote professional interventions with young adults refer to social, formal-structural, and personal factors. Nevertheless, studies of these factors from social workers' perspective, and research of the inhibitors associated with the socio-cultural context of minority young adults, are few. The aim of the present study was to examine social workers' perceptions of the factors that inhibit and promote interventions in the socio-cultural and formal-structural context of at-risk young Arab-Palestinian women in Israel, who are at an intersection of marginal positions. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 21 social workers. The findings revealed two themes: 1) Social workers' perceptions of the challenges in two dimensions, a) socio-cultural factors which include family centrality in the young women's life, and b) formal-structural inhibitors. 2) Promoting factors which include professional values and the need for cooperation between organizations themselves and with recipients of the services The findings were reviewed according to the intersectional invisibility model, and were based on the concept of institutional discrimination, which showed that at-risk young Arab women experience an intersectional invisibility of their identities and, at the same time, the social workers experience a conflicting situation within the wider context of intersectional discrimination. In recent years local governments in many North American cities have engaged in "land value capture," which involves state actors exchanging greater density for condominium developers through rezoning as a way to build social housing and affordable rental units. This paper focuses on how these policies are framed and implemented by developers, planners and politicians in two large Canadian cities, Toronto and Vancouver, to address a long-standing but under-theorized question: what is the relationship between altruism and profitability for private development companies? Drawing on concepts from economic and cultural sociology, including Beckert's fictional expectations, Goffman's frame analysis, and Bourdieu's forms of capital, I challenge existing accounts of developers as either following the logic of profit maximization, or "giving back" through charitable acts. Instead, I argue that land value capture policies involve the process of "giving back to get ahead;" through acts of gift-giving developers enhance their symbolic capital, or reputational prestige, leading to new opportunities for profit-making. Thus I show how meaning and symbolism accompany the pursuit of monetary gains and mystify "giving back" as a strategy of accumulation for the private sector. The purpose of this paper is to identify what individual experiences contribute to the development of students' intercultural competence in study abroad contexts and how these experiences positively or negatively impact their intercultural development. Fifty-one students completed the IDI both before and after their year-long sojourn abroad. Upon their return, twenty-six students participated in focus group debriefing sessions in which they answered questions regarding their personal growth and intercultural development while abroad. Thirteen categories of experiences—ten related to intercultural gains and three intercultural regressions—were identified and further abstracted into three broad themes (cognitive, behavioral, and affective). These findings partially confirm existing frameworks describing intercultural competence but add more nuance and complexity. Through the exploration of both the positive and negative learning outcomes by focusing on students' experiences at the individual level during study abroad, this study answers key questions of why study abroad experiences can lead to positive changes in intercultural competence for some students but negative ones for others. • Audiences of low-brow literature are strongly differentiated along categorical lines. • Gender and age, not religion or ethnicity, differentiate low-brow tastes. • High-brow tastes tend to be less gender-specific, than low-brow. • High-brow tastes tend to be less cohort-specific, than low-brow. • Age correlates negatively with the brow-level of the preferred literature. In his paper establishing the foundations of omnivorousness theory, Richard Peterson suggested that the system of tastes is organised as a pyramid "with one elite taste at the top and more and more alternative forms at about the same level as one moves down the pyramid toward its base", with tastes at the bottom "mark[ing] the status boundaries between taste groups defined by age, gender, race, region, religion, lifestyle" (1992, p.254). Whereas high-status individuals are likely to consume a few genres at all levels of the taste pyramid, low-status ones tend to patronise only one genre situated at the bottom. One of the predictions following from this model concerning the omnivorounsness of privileged groups has been tested in numerous studies, but the thesis of low-brow tastes having stronger structural embeddedness has been researched much less extensively. If Peterson is correct, we should find that the consumption of high-brow objects strongly correlates with status characteristics such as education where the consumption of low- and middle-brow does not; by the same token, the consumption of low-brow objects would correlate with gender, age, ethnicity, or other groupings where the consumption of high-brow objects does not. In this paper, we use a dataset from a St Petersburg public library system to analyse 1 300 000 book choices of over 100 000 readers to find out whether these predictions hold. We find that there is indeed a strong negative correlation between the attractiveness of authors for predominantly educated readers and the gender and age specificity of their audience. We discuss three possible theoretical explanations of this finding which can be discerned from the literature: (1) "group" and (2) "grid" interpretations, using the terms from Mary Douglas's cultural theory, and (3) the opposition between relaxational and self-cultivating usages of culture. • Assessing human rights engagement as a series of events rather than long-term trends. • Paying attention to events allows conceptualization of multiple types of state performances when it comes to human rights. • Arab Spring changed voting patterns of most repressive states serving on the Human Rights Council. • A few repressive states (China, Cuba, Russia) did not shift their voting patterns. Sociological research on human rights analyzes the degree to which states engage with international human rights commitments over time. Yet we have a limited understanding of how specific events shape the long-term trajectory of human rights norms. This paper explores the effect of the Arab Spring on voting in the UN Human Rights Council. Using multiple growth curve models, I find that the emergence of the Arab Spring changed the voting patterns of most non-free states, but only temporarily, and that this holds even when controlling for protest events facing a given country. In contrast, a small set of non-free states did not change their votes during the Arab Spring. Drawing on research from cultural sociology, this paper explains these divergent voting patterns as heterogenous performances in the face of an event causing deep uncertainty such as the Arab Spring. The paper concludes that commitments to human rights norms must account for how events puncture broader trends, and that engagement with the human rights regime – and perhaps other performances of state legitimacy — requires an understanding of the multiple audiences, events, and policy possibilities to which states are attuned in international forums. This paper discusses the ancient anthropological linkage of water and wine with sacred rituals after these substances have been the focus of nonlocal perturbation. The paper reports the changes produced can be both physical, as well as a subjective aesthetic reaction arising when individuals have a sensorial interaction with such treated substances. In making this argument the paper presents and discusses research done by others, as well as the author including reporting the results of a 12 part series of experiments in which groups of seven people tasted wine from one 750 ml bottle that had been decanted into two identical 375 ml carafes. The histories of the carafes were the same except that one, before the tasting, had been the focus of intentioned awareness by meditators, while the other was a control. Twelve sessions were conducted, 11 resulted in a majority preferring the treated wine, and one resulted in a tie. Using an exact binomial test, the p-value is (0.5)11=12048=0.00049. Therefore, with 95% confidence we can say that the probability that a majority would prefer the treated wine is at least 0.76. Abstract This paper examines early career strategies and understandings of success among artists in the two emerging art scenes of Russia and India. It argues that differences in these understandings and strategies are shaped by the institutional composition of the artistic fields in the two countries. The paper is based on in-depth interviews with early career professional artists conducted in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, New Delhi, and Mumbai. It argues that the Bourdieusian disavowal of economic interests is no universal organizing principle of cultural fields but should instead be seen as highly contextual. In particular, it is less prominent in art scenes where few noncommercial contemporary art institutions exist. Thus, in India, where art dealers are the most powerful gatekeepers, artists' career strategies are informed by market logic. Meanwhile, early career professional artists in the Russian art scene do not see the market as a potential driver of their careers. The development of agriculture and improving farmers' welfare help focus the attention of researchers towards the adoption of individual and combined technology choices which focus on socio-economic and plot features. This paper used current data (2019) from rice farmers in Northern Ghana to extend multinomial endogenous treatment effect model which control selection bias to culture and religion. The research examined predictors of improved rice developed domestically, foreign improved rice varieties and the joint of the two kinds, and how each alternative impact the welfare of farmers (rice yield, per capita income, consumption expenditure and total assets). Our empirical findings show that the adoption of any alternative makes farmers better-off relative to non-adoption. Also, adopters in Guan and Christian faith have higher gains relative to their counter-part cultural and religious units.
