The latest versions of the Ross-Li model include kernels that represent isotropic reflection of the surface, describe backward reflection of soil and vegetation systems, characterize strong forward reflection of snow, and adequately consider the hotspot effect (i.e., RossThick-LiSparseReciprocalChen-Snow, RTLSRCS), theoretically able to effectively characterize BRDF/Albedo/NBAR features for various land surface types. However, a systematic evaluation of the RTLSRCS model is still lacking for various land cover types. In this paper, we conducted a thorough assessment of the RTLSRCS and RossThick-LiSparseReciprocalChen (RTLSRC) models in characterizing BRDF/Albedo/NBAR characteristics by using the global POLDER BRDF database. The primary highlights of this paper include the following: (1) Both models demonstrate high accuracy in characterizing the BRDF characteristics across 16 IGBP types. However, the accuracy of the RTLSRC model is notably reduced for land cover types with high reflectance and strong forward reflection characteristics, such as Snow and Ice (SI), Deciduous Needleleaf Forests (DNF), and Barren or Sparsely Vegetated (BSV). In contrast, the RTLSRCS model shows a significant improvement in accuracy for these land cover types. (2) These two models exhibit highly consistent albedo inversion across various land cover types (R2 > 0.9), particularly in black-sky and blue-sky albedo, except for SI. However, significant differences in white-sky albedo inversion persist between these two models for Evergreen Needleleaf Forests (ENF), Evergreen Broadleaf Forests (EBF), Urban Areas (UA), and SI (p < 0.05). (3) The NBAR values inverted by these two models are nearly identical across the other 15 land cover types. However, the consistency of NBAR results is relatively poor for SI. The RTLSRC model tends to overestimate compared to the RTLSRCS model, with a noticeable bias of approximately 0.024. Solar geoengineering (SG) solutions have many advantages compared to the difficulty of carbon dioxide removal (CDR): SG produces fast results, is shown here to have much higher efficiency than CDR, is not related to fossil fuel legislation, reduces the GHG effect including water vapor, and is something we all can participate in by brightening the Earth with cool roofs and roads. SG requirements detailed previously to mitigate global warming (GW) have been concerning primarily because of overwhelming goals and climate circulation issues. In this paper, annual solar geoengineering (ASG) equations and estimated requirements for yearly solar radiation modification (SRM) of areas are provided along with the advantages of annual solar geoengineering (ASG) to mitigate yearly global warming temperature increases. The ASG albedo area modification requirements found here are generally 50 to potentially more than 150 times less compared to the challenge of full SG GW albedo mitigation, reducing circulation concerns and increasing feasibility. These reductions are applied to L1 space sunshading, Earth brightening, and stratosphere aerosol injection (SAI) SRM annual area requirements. However, SAI coverage compared to other methods will have higher yearly increasing maintenance costs in the annual approach. Results also show that because ASG Earth albedo brightening area requirements are much smaller than those needed for full mitigation, there are concerns that worldwide negative SG would interfere with making positive advances for several reasons. Featured Application: Face-recognition for monocular systems (e.g., phones and buildings). This paper presents a novel material spectroscopy approach to facial presentation–attack–defense (PAD). Best-in-class PAD methods typically detect artifacts in the 3D space. This paper proposes similar features can be achieved in a monocular, single-frame approach by using controlled light. A mathematical model is produced to show how live faces and their spoof counterparts have unique reflectance patterns due to geometry and albedo. A rigorous dataset is collected to evaluate this proposal: 30 diverse adults and their spoofs (paper-mask, display-replay, spandex-mask and COVID mask) under varied pose, position, and lighting for 80,000 unique frames. A panel of 13 texture classifiers are then benchmarked to verify the hypothesis. The experimental results are excellent. The material spectroscopy process enables a conventional MobileNetV3 network to achieve 0.8% average-classification-error rate, outperforming the selected state-of-the-art algorithms. The sea ice albedo can amplify global climate change and affect the surface energy in the Arctic. In this paper, the data from Visible and Infra-Red Radiometer (VIRR) onboard Fengyun-3C satellite are applied to derive the Arctic sea ice albedo. Two radiative transfer models, namely, 6S and FluxNet, are used to simulate the reflectance and albedo in the shortwave band. Clear sky sea ice albedo in the Arctic region (60°~90°N) from 2016 to 2019 is derived through the physical process, including data preprocessing, narrowband to broadband conversion, anisotropy correction, and atmospheric correction. The results are compared with aircraft measurements and AVHRR Polar Pathfinder-Extended (APP-x) albedo product and OLCI MPF product. The bias and standard deviation of the difference between VIRR albedo and aircraft measurements are −0.040 and 0.071, respectively. Compared with APP-x product and OLCI MPF product, a good consistency of albedo is shown. And analyzed together with melt pond fraction, an obvious negative relationship can be seen. After processing the 4-year data, an obvious annual trend can be observed. Due to the influence of snow on the ice surface, the average surface albedo of the Arctic in March and April can reach more than 0.8. Starting in May, with the ice and snow melting and melt ponds forming, the albedo drops rapidly to 0.5–0.6. Into August, the melt ponds begin to freeze and the surface albedo increases. Urban surfaces play a crucial role in shaping the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect by absorbing and retaining significant solar radiation. This paper explores the potential of high-resolution satellite imagery as an alternative method for characterizing urban surfaces to support UHI mitigation strategies in urban redevelopment plans. We utilized Landsat images spanning the past 40 years to analyze trends in Land Surface Temperature (LST). Additionally, WorldView-3 (WV3) imagery was acquired for surface characterization, and the results were compared with ground truth measurements using the ASD FieldSpec 4 spectroradiometer. Our findings revealed a strong correlation between satellite-derived surface reflectance and ground truth measurements across various urban surfaces, with Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values ranging from 0.01 to 0.14. Optimal characterization was observed for surfaces such as bituminous membranes and parking with cobblestones (RMSE < 0.03), although higher RMSE values were noted for tiled roofs, likely due to aging effects. Regarding surface albedo, the differences between satellite-derived data and ground measurements consistently remained below 12% for all surfaces, with the lowest values observed in high heat-absorbing surfaces like bituminous membranes. Despite challenges on certain surfaces, our study highlights the reliability of satellite-derived data for urban surface characterization, thus providing valuable support for UHI mitigation efforts. Improving the operating income of farmers and herdsmen is an important starting point for achieving common prosperity. As a common form of learning and an important source of skills training, informal learning has a certain impact on the economy and income level of farmers and herdsmen. This paper takes 439 herdsmen in three cities of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as the research object and tries to explore the comprehensive influence, subdivision difference, and mechanism of informal learning on the operating income of herdsmen on the theoretical and empirical levels. The results show that the impact of informal learning on the operating income of herdsmen is "inverted U-shaped", and there is an informal learning balance point of 2.9776 h, which maximizes the effect of informal learning on the increased operating income of herdsmen. After using the instrumental variable method to deal with endogeneity and conducting robustness tests through winsorizing, quantile regression, and substitution variables, the research conclusions were still valid. Heterogeneity analysis found that informal learning has a significant impact on the increase in operating income of herdsmen in the low human capital group, reflecting the role of "sending charcoal in the snow". However, it has no significant effect on the increase in operating income of herdsmen in the high human capital group, and the effect of "icing on the cake" is not obvious. In view of this result, government departments should speed up the planning of Internet infrastructure construction in pastoral areas, and accurately push the knowledge and skills needs of herdsmen to help increase the operating income of herdsmen. Ultraviolet radiation (UV) has strong chemical and biological effects on human health and ecosystems, and it plays an important role in the atmospheric environment by affecting photochemical processes, etc. Clouds and aerosols are the main factors affecting UV radiation and analyzing the quantitative impact of them on UV radiation is of great significance. Using the observation data of UV radiation in Beijing from 2005 to 2020, as well as the data of aerosol optical depth (AOD), single scattering albedo (SSA), and other related parameters, this paper simulated the surface UV radiation in two scenarios of cloudless without aerosol and cloudless with aerosol based on the TUV (Tropospheric Ultraviolet-Visible model), and quantitatively evaluated the attenuation of UV radiation by aerosol and cloud in the Beijing area. The results show that UV radiation is more sensitive to changes in AOD. Fixing the SSA value to 0.9, when the AOD increases from 0.2 to 1.0, the UV radiation decreases from 21.16 W/m2 to 12.64 W/m2 at 12:00; when AOD is maintained at 0.64, the SSA increases from 0.7 to 0.95, and the UV radiation increases from 14.55 W/m2 to 19.91 W/m2. The average annual attenuation rates of ultraviolet radiation by aerosols and clouds from 2005 to 2020 are 30.64% and 40.22%, respectively; the monthly averaged attenuation rates are 30.48% and 42.04%, respectively; and the daily averaged attenuation rates are 31.02% and 50.45%, respectively. Radiative transfer is a nonlinear process. Despite this, most current methods to evaluate radiative feedback, such as the kernel method, rely on linear assumptions. Neural network (NN) models can emulate nonlinear radiative transfer due to their structure and activation functions. This study aims to test whether NNs can be used to evaluate shortwave radiative feedbacks and to assess their performance. This study focuses on the shortwave radiative feedback driven by surface albedo. An NN model is first trained using idealized cases, simulating truth values from a radiative transfer model via the partial radiative perturbation method. Two heuristic cases are analyzed: univariate feedback, perturbing the albedo; and bivariate feedback, perturbing the albedo and cloud cover concurrently. These test the NN's ability to capture nonlinearity in the albedo–flux and albedo–cloud–flux relationships. We identify the minimal NN structure and predictor variables for accurate predictions. Then, an NN model is trained with realistic radiation flux and atmospheric variable data and is tested with respect to its predictions at different order levels: zero-order for the flux itself, first-order for radiative sensitivity (kernels), and second-order for kernel differences. Precise mapping and continuous monitoring of fine-scale surface albedo are indispensable for assessing and optimizing renewable energy sources. Understanding the variations in surface reflectivity is crucial in capturing the full potential of renewable technologies, as it directly impacts the efficiency of harnessing solar energy for sustainable power generation. Satellite remote sensing stands out as the sole practical approach for estimating surface albedo at both regional and global scales. Although there are different methods to calculate albedo from satellite data, most satellite products result in low spatial resolution for large heterogeneous areas, such as urban and peri-urban areas. This paper evaluates and compares several methodologies to calculate surface albedo from Landsat 8 imagery. As a result, a new methodology for estimating surface albedo for heterogeneous areas has been proposed. The new methodology has been compared with direct and indirect albedo measurements, improving the original methodologies of Baldinelli and Silva with respect to the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABOVE) albedo images by reducing the RMSE by 85% and 52%, respectively. Accurate thermal infrared (TIR) fast-forward models are critical for weather forecasting via numerical weather prediction (NWP) satellite radiance assimilation and operational environmental data record (EDR) retrieval algorithms. The thermodynamic and compositional data about the surface and lower troposphere are derived from semi-transparent TIR window bands (i.e., surface-sensitive channels) that can span into the far-infrared (FIR) region under dry polar conditions. To model the satellite observed radiance within these bands, an accurate a priori emissivity is necessary for the surface in question, usually provided in the form of a physical or empirical model. To address the needs of hyperspectral TIR satellite radiance assimilation, this paper discusses the research, development, and preliminary validation of a physically based snow/ice emissivity model designed for practical implementation within operational fast-forward models such as the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM). To accommodate the range of snow grain sizes, a hybrid modeling approach is adopted, combining a layer scattering model based on the Mie theory (viz., the Wiscombe–Warren 1980 snow albedo model, its complete derivation provided in the Appendices) with a specular facet model. The Mie-scattering model is valid for the smallest snow grain sizes typical of fresh snow and frost, whereas the specular facet model is better suited for the larger sizes and welded snow surfaces typical of aged snow. Comparisons of the model against the previously published spectral emissivity measurements show reasonable agreement across zenith observing angles and snow grain sizes, and preliminary observing system experiments (OSEs) have revealed notable improvements in snow/ice surface window channel calculations versus hyperspectral TIR satellite observations within the NOAA NWP radiance assimilation system. The extensive existence of high-brightness ice and snow underlying surfaces in polar regions presents notable complexities for cloud detection in remote sensing imagery. To elevate the accuracy of cloud detection in polar regions, a novel polar cloud detection algorithm is proposed in this paper. Employing the MOD09 surface reflectance product, we compiled a database of monthly composite surface reflectance in the shortwave infrared bands specific to polar regions. Through the forward simulation of the correlation between the apparent reflectance and surface reflectance across diverse conditions using the 6S (Second Simulation of the Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum) radiative transfer model, we established a dynamic cloud detection model for the shortwave infrared channels. In contrast to a machine learning algorithm and the widely used MOD35 cloud product, the algorithm introduced in this study demonstrates enhanced congruence with the authentic cloud distribution within cloud products. It precisely distinguishes between the cloudy and clear-sky pixels, achieving rates surpassing 90% for both, while maintaining an error rate and a missing rate each under 10%. The algorithm yields positive results for cloud detection in polar regions, effectively distinguishing between ice, snow, and clouds. Snow cover on the Tibetan Plateau has a shallow depth, plaque distribution, and repeated ablation. The applicability of the snow parameterization scheme in the current land surface process model on the TP needs to be further tested using observational data. In this paper, using the land surface process model CLM4.5 and ten fresh snow density parameterization schemes characterized by temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity, three discontinuous snow processes in Maqu, Madoi, and Yakou and two continuous snow processes in Madoi and Yakou were simulated. By comparing the simulated snow depth with the observed, it was found that this model can clearly describe repeated snow accumulation and ablation processes for the discontinuous snow cover process. The KW scheme, compared with the original Anderson scheme, performed the best regarding snow depth simulation. However, all schemes overestimated the melting rate of snow, and were not able to simulate continuous snow accumulation. The simulation effect of the Schmucki scheme on radiation and energy flux under discontinuous snow cover was significantly improved compared with other scheme. None of schemes performed perfectly, so future studies that focus on the simulations of snow depth, radiation flux, and energy flux under continuous snow cover for accurate and wide applications are recommended. Snow parameters have traditionally been retrieved using discontinuous, multi-band sensors; however, continuous hyperspectral sensors are now being developed as an alternative. In this paper, we investigate the performance of various sensor configurations using machine learning neural networks trained on a simulated dataset. Our results show improvements in the accuracy of retrievals of snow grain size and impurity concentration for continuous hyperspectral channel configurations. Surface albedo plays a controlling role in the surface energy budget, and albedo-induced radiative forcing has a significant impact on climate and environmental change (e.g., global warming, snow and ice melt, soil and vegetation degradation, and urban heat islands (UHIs)). Several existing review papers have summarized the algorithms and products of surface albedo as well as climate feedback at certain surfaces, while an overall understanding of various land types remains insufficient, especially with increasing studies on albedo management methods regarding mitigating global warming in recent years. In this paper, we present a comprehensive literature review on the variance pattern of surface albedo, the subsequent climate impact, and albedo management strategies. The results show that using the more specific term "surface albedo" is recommended instead of "albedo" to avoid confusion with similar terms (e.g., planetary albedo), and spatiotemporal changes in surface albedo can indicate subtle changes in the energy budget, land cover, and even the specific surface structure. In addition, the close relationships between surface albedo change and climate feedback emphasize the important role of albedo in climate simulation and forecasting, and many albedo management strategies (e.g., the use of retroreflective materials (RRMs)) have been demonstrated to be effective for climate mitigation by offsetting CO2 emissions. In future work, climate effects and management strategies regarding surface albedo at a multitude of spatiotemporal resolutions need to be systematically evaluated to promote its application in climate mitigation, where a life cycle assessment (LCA) method considering both climate benefits and side effects (e.g., thermal comfort) should be followed. This paper investigates the quality of global cloud fraction and cloud-top height products provided by the third edition of the CM SAF cLoud, Albedo and surface RAdiation dataset from the AVHRR data (CLARA-A3) climate data record (CDR) produced by the EUMETSAT Climate Monitoring Satellite Application Facility (CM SAF). Compared with with CALIPSO–CALIOP cloud lidar data and six other cloud CDRs, including the predecessor CLARA-A2, CLARA-A3 has improved cloud detection, especially over ocean surfaces, and improved geographical variation and cloud detection efficiency. In addition, CLARA-A3 exhibits remarkable improvements in the accuracy of its global cloud-top height measurements. For example, in tropical regions, previous underestimations for high-level clouds are reduced by more than 2 km. By taking advantage of more realistic descriptions of global cloudiness, this study attempted to estimate trends in the observable fraction of low-level clouds, acknowledging their importance in producing a net climate cooling effect. The results were generally inconclusive in the tropics, mainly due to the interference of El Nino modes during the period under study. However, the analysis found small negative trends over oceanic surfaces outside the core tropical region. Further studies are needed to verify the significance of these results. The paper presents the first retrievals of clean snow properties using spaceborne hyperspectral observations via the Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP). The location close to the Concordia station at the Dome C Plateau (Antarctica) was selected. At this location, the atmospheric effects (except molecular light scattering and absorption) are weak, and the simplified atmospheric correction scheme could be applied. The ice grain size, snow specific surface area, and snow spectral and broadband albedos were retrieved using single-view EnMAP measurements. In addition, we propose a technique to retrieve trace gas concentrations (e.g., water vapor and ozone) from EnMAP observations over the snow surfaces. The snow temperature above the ice sheet is one of the basic characteristic parameters of the ice sheet, which plays an important role in the study of the global climate. Because infrared and microwaves with different frequencies have different penetration depths in snow, it is possible to retrieve the snow temperature profiles by combining microwave and infrared brightness temperatures. This paper proposes a conjoint inversion algorithm to retrieve snow temperature profiles by combining multi-frequency microwave brightness temperature (BT) with infrared BT, in which different weight functions of microwave BT at different frequencies are adopted, and the atmosphere influence has also been corrected. The snow temperature profile data are retrieved based on AMSR2 microwave BT data and MODIS infrared BT data in 2017 and 2018, which are evaluated by comparing with the measured snow temperature at Dome-C station. The results confirm that the inverted snow temperature profiles are consistent with the field observation data from the Dome-C station. Multi-frequency microwave brightness temperature can be used to invert the snow temperature profiles; however, the inverted snow surface temperature is more accurate by combining the infrared BT with the microwave BT in the conjoint inversion algorithm. The validation of the potential energy yield of bifacial PV systems of various configurations at low latitudes under West African climatic conditions is critical for evaluating performance and for promoting market expansion of the technology since validation has mostly occurred in high-latitude regions. In this paper, the potential energy yield from an inclined south-facing bifacial PV module and a vertically mounted east–west bifacial PV module are compared to an inclined south-facing monofacial PV module using an analytical model, field-measured data, and simulations. For measured/modelled and PVsyst/modelled monofacial systems, the model predicts RMSE values of 1.49 and 9.02, respectively. An inclined bifacial PV system has RMSEs of 1.88 and 7.97 for measured/modelled and PVsyst/modelled, respectively, and a vertically installed system has RMSEs of 10.03 for measured/modelled and 3.76 for PVsyst/modelled. Monthly energy yield is predicted by the model, with deviations from measured data ranging from 0.08% to 1.41% for monofacial systems, from 0.05% to 4.06% for inclined bifacial systems, and from 4.63% to 9.61% for vertical bifacial systems. The average bifacial gains from the modelled, measured, and simulated data of an inclined south-facing stand-alone bifacial PV system over an inclined south-facing stand-alone monofacial system are 9.05%, 10.15%, and 5.65%. Finally, at 0.25 albedo, the inclined monofacial PV system outperforms and yields more energy than the vertically installed bifacial PV system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes an integrated panoramic sun sensor (IPSS) for the small spherical satellite Q-SAT that has been working in orbit since 2020. IPSS is essentially a set of temperature-compensated photoelectric cells distributed on the spherical surface of Q-SAT. Compared with traditional sun sensors, IPSS has full spherical coverage of 4 π so that the sun vector from any direction can be inversed. The mechatronic design and mathematical model of the proposed IPSS are presented. In-depth error analyses in terms of albedo effect, sampling error, parameter deviation, etc. are carried out. IPSS can provide a sun vector inversion accuracy of 1.5 ∘ where albedo disturbance does not dominate. Simulation results show that the measurement of IPSS together with a COTS magnetometer can support the three-axis attitude determination of satellites in various orbits and can adapt to the seasonal variations of subpolar points. Ground experimental results and on-orbit data have also verified the feasibility and performance of IPSS. Land use/cover change (LUCC) can change the energy balance of the earth's surface by altering its biophysical properties (surface albedo), and it also has an important impact on the ecological climate. In this paper, using surface energy balance algorithms, the differences in energy balance and the resulting ecoclimatic effects under different land use changes in the Yangtze River basin from 2000 to 2020 were analyzed. The results showed that: (1) from 2000 to 2020, the energy uptake of surface net radiation ( R s ) in the Yangtze River basin showed a downward trend with increasing intensity of impact from human activities. This indicated that human activities could weaken the positive trend of R s uptake and increase the warming effect; (2) R s and latent heat flux (LHF) showed an upward trend, which was more obvious in natural and semi-natural regions and mixed pixel regions; (3) LHF − R s energy uptake showed a decreasing trend, indicating that the effect of R s on surface absorbed energy was greater than that of LHF, which was more significant in old urban areas and urban expansion areas. This research highlights the variation in the surface energy budgets of the five land use types with different levels of human activities. This will provide a theoretical reference for future land planning and management. The land surface albedo (LSA) represents the ability of the land surface to reflect solar radiation. It is one of the driving factors in the energy balance of land surface radiation and in land–air interactions. In this paper, we estimated the land surface albedo based on GF-1 WFV satellite data that have a high spatial and temporal resolution and cross-validated the albedo estimation results. The albedo estimations and validations were performed in the Ganzhou District, Zhangye City, China, and the Sindh Province, Pakistan. We used the direct estimation method which used a radiative transfer simulation to establish the relationship between the narrow band top of the atmosphere bidirectional reflectance and the land broadband albedo to estimate the albedo data. The results were validated with ground data, Landsat data, MODIS products, and GLASS products. The results show that the method can produce highly accurate albedo estimation results on different land cover types (RMSE: 0.026, R2: 0.835) and has a good consistency with the existing albedo products. The melting behavior of glaciers on and around the Tibetan Plateau is strongly influenced by their albedo. In this paper, we report continuous observations made on the Qiangtang (QT) No. 1 Glacier, located in the central Tibetan Plateau, during its 2013–2015 melting seasons. Surface snow on the QT No. 1 Glacier mainly had a dust content less than 600 ppm and a black carbon (BC) content less than 10 ppb. A strong negative correlation was observed between albedo and dust content up to a threshold concentration of 1000 ppm, although albedo remained constant when dust concentrations increased above this value. The radii of snow particles showed a log-normal distribution that had a mean value of ~500 μm, but maximum and minimum values of 2539 μm and 40 μm, respectively. Snow density showed a normal distribution with a total range of 193–555 kg/m3, although most snow had a density of 400 kg/m3. Snow, ice, and aerosol radiative (SNICAR) simulations showed that dust and BC in the surface snow of the QT No. 1 Glacier reduced the snow and ice albedo by 5.9% and 0.06%, respectively, during the ablation season in 2015; however, the simulated particle impact was greater than the albedo reduction measured from field data. We interpret that dust has played a significantly more important role in melting of the QT No. 1 Glacier than BC over the study period, which is mainly due to the scarcity of human activities in the region and the low concentration of BC being produced. In recent years, the conversion of saline-alkali land to rice fields has become the most dominant land use change feature in western Jilin, leading to significant surface greening. Saline–alkali land and paddy fields have distinct surface biophysical properties; however, there is a lack of systematic assessment of the moderating effect of planting rice on saline–alkali land on regional climate by changing surface properties. In this paper, multiscale data on the surface temperature of saline–alkali land and paddy fields were obtained using 1 km MODIS product, 30 m Landsat 8 satellite imagery and centimeter-scale UAV imagery in Da'an City, western Jilin as the study area, and the various characteristics of the surface temperature of saline-alkali land and paddy fields in different months of the year and at different times of the day were analyzed. Furthermore, the effect of rice cultivation in saline–alkali land on the local surface temperature was assessed using a space-for-time approach. The results based on satellite observations including both MODIS and Landsat showed that the surface temperature of saline–alkali land was significantly higher than that of paddy fields during the crop growing season, especially in July and August. The high temporal resolution MODIS LST data also indicated the paddy fields cool the daytime surface temperature, while warming the nighttime surface temperature, which was in contrast for saline–alkali land during the growing season. High-resolution UAV observations in July confirmed that the cooling effect of paddy fields was most significant at the middle of day. From the biophysical perspective, the reclamation of saline–alkali land into paddy fields leads to an increase in leaf area index, followed by a significant increase in evapotranspiration. Meanwhile, rice cultivation in saline–alkali land reduces surface albedo and increases surface net radiation. The trade-off relationship between the two determines the seasonal difference in the surface temperature response of saline–alkali land for rice cultivation. At the same time, the daily cycle of crop evapotranspiration and the thermal insulation effect of paddy fields at night are the main reasons for the intraday difference in surface temperature between saline–alkali land and paddy field. Based on the multiscale assessment of the impact of rice cultivation in saline-alkali land on surface temperature, this study provides a scientific basis for predicting future regional climate change and comprehensively understanding the ecological and environmental benefits of saline–alkali land development. Heat island effects raise the ambient air temperature in metropolitan areas by 4–5 degrees Celsius and can reach 10 degrees Celsius at their maximum. This phenomenon magnifies cities' energy difficulties while reducing comfort. Mitigation strategies have been developed and recommended to deal with the issue. Methods to increase albedo and the utilisation of vegetation appear to be the most promising, with a reasonably high heat island reduction capacity. This paper examines the heat mitigation techniques and their effectiveness under Sydney's climate conditions and compares strategies. We implement two perspectives, namely urban greening (green roofs, green pavements) and albedo (street, roof), and characterise urban surface structures, and Envi-met software is employed for our simulation method. Mitigation strategies show a cooling potential of 4.1 °C in temperature along this precinct during the heatwave period. Scenarios that increase high-albedo material on the road, pavements and rooftops and full mitigation show the maximum cooling potential. The mitigation strategies have higher predicted cooling potential on the peak ambient temperature, up to 1.18 °C, while having no or little impact on minimum ambient temperature. The outdoor thermal comfort based on PMV indices varies between a minimum of −0.33 in scenario seven in large layout areas to 3. Recent studies have demonstrated that wideband microwave radiometers provide significant potential for profiling important subsurface polar firn characteristics necessary to understand the dynamics of the cryosphere and predict future changes in ice and snow coverage. Different frequencies within the wide spectra of radiometers result in different electromagnetic propagation losses and thus reveal characteristics at different depths in ice and snow. This paper, expanding on those investigations, explores the utilization of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) constellation as a single wideband (6.93 GHz–91.655 GHz) spaceborne radiometer, covering the entire microwave spectrum from C-band to W-band, to profile subsurface properties of the Antarctic firn. Results of the initial analyses over Concordia and Vostok Stations in Antarctica indicate that GPM brightness temperature measurements provide critical information regarding the subsurface temperatures and physical properties of the firn from the surface down to several meters of depth. Considering the high spatiotemporal coverage of polar-orbiting spaceborne radiometers, these results are promising for future continent-level thermal and physical characterization of the Antarctic firn. Narrowband-to-broadband conversion is a critical procedure for mapping land-surface broadband albedo using multi-spectral narrowband remote-sensing observations. Due to the significant difference in optical characteristics between soil and vegetation, NTB conversion is influenced by the variation in vegetation coverage on different surface types. To reduce this influence, this paper applies an approach that couples NTB coefficient with the NDVI. Multi-staged NDVI dependent NTB coefficient look-up tables (LUT) for Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Polarization and Directionality of Earth's Reflectance (POLDER) and Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) were calculated using 6000 spectra samples collected from two typical spectral databases. Sensitivity analysis shows that NTB conversion is affected more by the NDVI for sensors with fewer band numbers, such as POLDER and AVHRR. Analysis of the validation results based on simulations, in situ measurements and global albedo products indicates that by using the multi-staged NDVI dependent NTB method, the conversion accuracies of these two sensors could be improved by 2%-13% on different NDVI classes compared with the general method. This improvement could be as high as 15%, on average, and 35% on dense vegetative surface compared with the global broadband albedo product of POLDER. This paper shows that it is necessary to consider surface reflectance characteristics associated with the NDVI on albedo-NTB conversion for remote sensors with fewer than five bands. Land surface albedo directly determines the distribution of radiant energy between the surface and the atmosphere, and it is a key parameter affecting the energy balance on the land surface. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics of land surface albedo and associated influencing factors in the Qilian Mountains (QM) have been rarely reported. By using the long-time series data products of MODIS shortwave albedo, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and snow cover with a spatial resolution of 0.05° from 2001 to 2020, this paper analyzes the temporal and spatial variations of land surface albedo in the QM over the past 20 years and its influencing factors. The analysis results show that the multi-year average surface albedo in the QM has obvious differences in spatial distribution: it increases with the altitude, and it is high in the west (at the west of 98° E) and low in the east. Meanwhile, the surface albedo has different distribution characteristics in different seasons: the spatial distribution of surface albedo is similar in spring and autumn; the areas with a high surface albedo in summer are significantly fewer than those in other seasons. Besides, in the past 20 years, the annual average surface albedo has shown a weak growth trend in the QM, with a change rate of 5 × 10−3/10a, and the minimum and maximum values were reached in 2001 and 2019, respectively. In addition, the annual variation of the surface albedo in the QM showed a "U" shape, with the largest variation in January and the smallest variation in August. The annual variation of surface albedo is significantly positively correlated with snow cover (r = 0.96) and significantly negatively correlated with NDVI (r = −0.91). Moreover, the interannual variation of the surface albedo in the QM is closely related to land surface cover and is greatly affected by snow cover. Spatially, the annual variation of surface albedo in most areas of the QM is dominated by the change of snow cover, and the increase of surface albedo in the middle area is consistent with the increase of snow cover, while the decrease of albedo in the edge area is related to the improvement of vegetation cover. The results of this study provide a scientific basis for studying the climate and environmental changes caused by changes in the surface of the QM and making ecological environment restoration strategies. Leaf reflectance and transmittance spectra are urgently needed in interpretation of remote sensing data and modeling energy budgets of vegetation. The measurement methods should be fast to operate and preferably portable to enable quick collection of spectral databases and in situ measurements. At the same time, the collected spectra must be comparable across measurement campaigns. We compared three different methods for acquiring leaf reflectance and transmittance spectra. These were a single integrating sphere (ASD RTS-3ZC), a small double integrating sphere (Ocean Optics SpectroClip-TR), and a leaf clip (PP Systems UNI501 Mini Leaf Clip). With all methods, an ASD FieldSpec 4 spectrometer was used to measure white paper and tree leaves. Single and double integrating spheres showed comparable within-method variability in the measurements. Variability with leaf clip was slightly higher. The systematic difference in mean reflectance spectra between single and double integrating spheres was only minor (average relative difference of 1%), whereas a large difference (14%) was observed in transmittance. Reflectance measured with leaf clip was on average 14% higher compared to single integrating sphere. The differences between methods influenced also spectral vegetation indices calculated from the spectra, particularly those that were designed to track small changes in spectra. Measurements with double integrating sphere were four, and with leaf clip six times as fast as with single integrating sphere, if slightly reduced signal level (integration time reduced from optimum) was allowed for the double integrating sphere. Thus, these methods are fast alternatives to a conventional single integrating sphere. However, because the differences between methods depended on the measured target and wavelength, care must be taken when comparing the leaf spectra acquired with different methods. The so-called urban heat islands (UHI) is a thermal phenomenon characterized by higher air temperatures in the urban area than in rural surroundings. Vernacular passive strategies such as courtyards are proved to be useful to generate specific microclimates, especially in the warmer regions of the Earth. Courtyards increase the porosity of the cities, understanding porosity as building voids. Accordingly, their study will be fundamental in reducing the UHI effect by generating urban cooling microislands. This paper aims to analyze two passive strategies capable of modifying the thermal effect of radiation inside the courtyard of two school buildings: albedo and vegetation. In this regard, two case studies were assessed, both of them located in the city of Seville. Results show that the temperature in these spaces can vary up to 7 °C depending on the albedo, which confirms the importance of detecting an optimal albedo factor. In addition, data showed a significant increase in the thermal delta (TD), courtyard versus outdoor temperature, after the installation of a vegetal facade. Accordingly, both strategies will be fundamental in locations affected by climate change, especially considering that they are not only effective cooling strategies but also relatively easy to implement in the building's refurbishment process. To evaluate and improve the quality of land surface albedo products, validation with ground measurements of albedo is crucial over the spatially and temporally heterogeneous land surface. One of the essential steps for satellite albedo product validation is coarse scale observation technique development with long time ground-based measurements. In this paper, the optimal nodes were selected from the wireless sensor network (WSN) to perform observation at large scale and in longer time series for validation of albedo products. The relative difference is used to analyze the spatiotemporal representativeness of each node. The random combination method is used to assess the number of required sites (NRS) and then to identify the most representative combination (MRC). On this basis, an upscaling transform function with different weights for each node in the MRC, which are calculated with the ordinary least squares (OLS) linear regression method, is used to upscale WSN node albedo from point scale to the field scale. This method is illustrated by selecting the optimal nodes and upscaling surface albedo from point observation to the field scale in the Heihe River basin, China. Primary findings are: (a) The method of reducing the number of observations without significant loss of information about surface albedo at field scale is feasible and effective; (b) When only few sensors are available, the most representative locations in time and space should be the first priority; when a number of sensors are available in the heterogeneous land surface, it is preferable to install them in different land surface, rather than the most representative locations; (c) The most representative combination (MRC) combined with the upscaling weight coefficients can give a robust estimate of the field mean surface albedo. These efforts based on ground albedo observations promote the chance to use point information for validation of coarse scale albedo products. Moreover, a preliminary validation of the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) albedo product was performed as the tentative application for upscaling predictions. In the convolutional retinex approach to image lightness processing, an image is filtered by a centre/surround operator that is designed to mitigate the effects of shading (illumination gradients), which in turn compresses the dynamic range. Typically, the parameters that define the shape and extent of the filter are tuned to provide visually pleasing results, and a mapping function such as a logarithm is included for further image enhancement. In contrast, a statistical approach to convolutional retinex has recently been introduced, which is based upon known or estimated autocorrelation statistics of the image albedo and shading components. By introducing models for the autocorrelation matrices and solving a linear regression, the optimal filter is obtained in closed form. Unlike existing methods, the aim is simply to objectively mitigate shading, and so image enhancement components such as a logarithmic mapping function are not included. Here, the full mathematical details of the method are provided, along with implementation details. Significantly, it is shown that the shapes of the autocorrelation matrices directly impact the shape of the optimal filter. This study investigates the performance of isotropic and anisotropic diffuse models to estimate the total solar energy received on flat-plate collectors fixed on dual-axis trackers. These estimations are applied at twelve sites selected in both hemispheres with different terrain and environmental conditions. The diffuse (or transposition) models used in this study are the isotropic Liu-Jordan (L&J), Koronakis (KOR), Badescu (BAD), and Tian (TIA), and the anisotropic Hay (HAY), Reindl (REI), Klucher (KLU), Skartveit and Olseth (S&O), and Steven and Unsworth (S&U). These models were chosen because of their simplicity in the calculations and minimum number of input values. The results show that a single transposition model is not efficient for all sites; therefore, the most appropriate models are selected for each site under all, clear, intermediate, and overcast conditions in skies. On the other hand, an increase in the ground albedo in the vicinity of the solar installation can increase the annual inclined solar availability on a two-axis tracker by at least 9% on average. Further, a linear dependence of the annual inclined solar energy on the variation of the ground albedo was found. Japanese mandarins are becoming increasingly popular due to their pleasant aroma. The volatiles in four varieties of Japanese mandarins (Iyokan, Ponkan, Shiranui, and Unshiu mikan) were extracted by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and solvent extraction, then analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Principal component analysis (PCA) of the GC-MS data demonstrated distinct segregation of all four Japanese mandarin varieties. Esters, such as neryl acetate, distinguished Iyokan. Methylthymol uniquely characterised Ponkan, valencene was exclusive to Shiranui, and acids like hexanoic acid and heptanoic acid differentiated Unshiu mikan from the other three varieties. Aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) revealed 131 key odourants across four Japanese mandarins, including myrcene (peppery, terpenic), perillyl alcohol (green, spicy, floral), trans-nerolidol (sweet, floral), and trans-farnesol (woody, floral, green). Finally, sensory evaluation was conducted on the four Japanese mandarin peel extracts to describe the distinct aroma profile of each variety of Japanese mandarin: Iyokan had higher floral and juicy notes, Ponkan showed higher sulphury notes, Shiranui was perceived to have more albedo notes, and Unshiu mikan exhibited higher peely, green, and woody notes. Structured lighting techniques have increasingly been employed in underwater imaging, where scattering effects cannot be ignored. This paper presents an approach to underwater image recovery using structured light as a scanning mode. The method tackles both the forward scattering and back scattering problems. By integrating each of the sequentially striping illuminated frame images, we generate a synthesized image that can be modeled on the convolution of the surface albedo and the illumination function. Thus, image acquisition is issued as a problem of image recovery by deconvolution. The convolutional model has the advantage of integrating the forward scattering light into a recovered image so as to eliminate image blur. Notably, the removal of the back scattered light from each frame image can be easily realized by a virtual aperture to limit the field of view; the same principle as of the synchronous scanning systems in underwater imaging. Topography affects the fraction of direct and diffuse radiation received on a pixel and changes the sun–target–sensor geometry, resulting in variations in the observed radiance. Retrieval of surface–atmosphere properties from top of atmosphere radiance may need to account for topographic effects. This study investigates how such effects can be taken into account for top of atmosphere radiance modeling. In this paper, a system for top of atmosphere radiance modeling over heterogeneous non-Lambertian rugged terrain through radiative transfer modeling is presented. The paper proposes an extension of "the four-stream radiative transfer theory" (Verhoef and Bach 2003, 2007 and 2012) mainly aimed at representing topography-induced contributions to the top of atmosphere radiance modeling. A detailed account for BRDF effects, adjacency effects and topography effects on the radiance modeling is given, in which sky-view factor and non-Lambertian reflected radiance from adjacent slopes are modeled precisely. The paper also provides a new formulation to derive the atmospheric coefficients from MODTRAN with only two model runs, to make it more computationally efficient and also avoiding the use of zero surface albedo as used in the four-stream radiative transfer theory. The modeling begins with four surface reflectance factors calculated by the Soil–Leaf–Canopy radiative transfer model SLC at the top of canopy and propagates them through the effects of the atmosphere, which is explained by six atmospheric coefficients, derived from MODTRAN radiative transfer code. The top of the atmosphere radiance is then convolved with the sensor characteristics to generate sensor-like radiance. Using a composite dataset, it has been shown that neglecting sky view factor and/or terrain reflected radiance can cause uncertainty in the forward TOA radiance modeling up to 5 (mW/m2•sr•nm). It has also been shown that this level of uncertainty can be translated into an over/underestimation of more than 0.5 in LAI (or 0.07 in fCover) in variable retrieval. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents the development of the power, propulsion, and thermal systems for a 3U CubeSat orbiting Earth at a radius of 600 km measuring the radiation imbalance using the RAVAN (Radiometer Assessment using Vertically Aligned NanoTubes) payload developed by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). The propulsion system was selected as a Mars-Space PPTCUP-Pulsed Plasma Thruster for CubeSat Propulsion, micro-pulsed plasma thruster with satisfactory capability to provide enough impulse to overcome the generated force due to drag to maintain an altitude of 600 km and bring the CubeSat down to a graveyard orbit of 513 km. Thermal analysis for hot case found that the integration of a black high-emissivity paint and MLI was required to prevent excessive heating within the structure. Furthermore, the power system analysis successfully defined electrical consumption scenarios for the CubeSat's 600 km orbit. The analysis concluded that a singular 7W solar panel mounted on a sun-facing side of the CubeSat using a sun sensor could satisfactorily power the electrical system throughout the hot phase and charge the craft's battery enough to ensure constant electrical operation during the cold phase, even with the additional integration of an active thermal heater. However, when the inevitable end-of-life degradation of the solar cell was factored into the analysis, an approximate power deficit of 2 kJ was found. The Earth Radiation Budget at the top of the atmosphere quantifies how the Earth gains energy from the Sun and loses energy to space. It is of fundamental importance for climate and climate change. In this paper, the current state-of-the-art of the satellite measurements of the Earth Radiation Budget is reviewed. Combining all available measurements, the most likely value of the Total Solar Irradiance at a solar minimum is 1362 W/m², the most likely Earth albedo is 29.8%, and the most likely annual mean Outgoing Longwave Radiation is 238 W/m². We highlight the link between long-term changes of the Outgoing Longwave Radiation, the strengthening of El Nino in the period 1985-1997 and the strengthening of La Nina in the period 2000-2009. Aerosol microphysical properties, including aerosol particle size distribution, complex refractive index and concentration properties, are key parameters evaluating the impact of aerosols on climate, meteorology, and human health. High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) is an efficient tool for probing the vertical optical properties of aerosol particles, including the aerosol backscatter coefficient (β) and extinction coefficient (α), at multiple wavelengths. To swiftly process vast data volumes, address the ill-posedness of retrieval problems, and suit simpler lidar systems, this study proposes an algorithm (modified algorithm) for retrieving microphysical property profiles from the HSRL optical data targeting fine-mode aerosols, building upon a previous algorithm (basic algorithm). The modified algorithm is based on a look-up table (LUT) approach, combined with the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) and random forest (RF) algorithms, and it optimizes the decision tree generation strategy, incorporating a self-posed scheme. In numerical simulation tests for different lidar configurations, the modified algorithm reduced retrieval errors by 41%, 30%, and 32% compared to the basic algorithm for 3β + 2α, 3β + 1α, and 2β + 1α, respectively, with a remarkable improvement of stability. In two observation scenes of a field campaign, the median relative errors of the effective radius for 3β + 2α were 6% and −3%, and the median absolute errors of single-scattering albedo were 0.012 and 0.005. This method represents a further step toward the use of the LUT approach, with the potential to provide effective and efficient aerosol microphysical retrieval for simpler lidar systems, which could advance our understanding of aerosols' climatic, meteorological, and health impacts. A new algorithm is proposed to estimate the cooling amplitude over North China induced by each Ural blocking event. Taking full account of potential transient temperature rises during the cooling process and the lag time of cooling relative to the blocking, this algorithm provides more detailed analysis which should not be possible by using former methods. The amplitude of the Ural blocking-related cooling events is found to have a broad distribution. Further, although most Ural blocking events lead to severe cold surges over North China, the number of Ural blocking events that do not induce significant cooling over North China cannot be ignored. The possible reasons for the wide range in cooling amplitude are explored in terms of the lifetimes and geographical centers of the blocking highs, the circulation patterns preceding the onset of the cooling events, and the snowfall associated with cooling events. Larger amplitude cooling events occur in Ural blocking highs that have longer lifetimes and northwestward displacements of their geographical centers. The northward displacement of a Ural blocking center favors the advection of extremely cold air from the Arctic regions, which accumulates in West Siberia and subsequently gives rise to the most severe cold surges over North China. The lack of activities of cold surges before the blocking-related cooling events not only amplifies the cooling amplitude directly, but also increases the occurrence probabilities of snowfalls through its modulation on the local specific humidity. Assessing the regional mass balance of European glaciers presents significant challenges due to limited measurements. While various albedo methods have been explored for individual glaciers, a comprehensive analysis of aggregated albedo methods is lacking. Addressing this gap, in our study, we examined five MODIS aggregated albedos (raw average, minimum average, average minimum, interpolated average, and cumulative) versus the annual mass balance for 12 Austrian and Norwegian glaciers from 2001 to 2020 to establish connections between them. We find that the raw average albedo is strongly correlated with the annual mass balance of Austrian glaciers (r = 0.91), while the interpolated average albedo is significantly correlated with the annual mass balance of Norwegian glaciers (r = 0.90). Moreover, we observe that high-elevation glaciers experience fewer cloud cover days, allowing the raw average albedo to reliably estimate the annual mass balance, whereas low-elevation glaciers are often obscured by clouds, potentially masking the true minimum albedo. Additionally, traditional indicators, such as the equilibrium-line altitude and accumulation area ratio, exhibit significant correlations with the annual mass balance of Norwegian and Austrian glaciers (r = 0.90 and 0.87, respectively), yet albedo demonstrates higher robustness. Accurate and continuous estimation of surface albedo is vital for assessing and understanding land–surface–atmosphere interactions. We developed a method for estimating instantaneous all-sky at-surface shortwave upwelling radiance and albedo over the Tibetan Plateau. The method accounts for the complex interplay of topography and atmospheric interactions and aims to mitigate the occurrence of data gaps. Employing an RTLSR-kernel-driven model, we retrieved surface shortwave albedo with a 1 km resolution, incorporating direct, isotropic diffuse; circumsolar diffuse; and surrounding terrain irradiance into the all-sky solar surface irradiance. The at-surface upwelling radiance and surface shortwave albedo estimates were in satisfactory agreement with ground observations at four stations in the Tibetan Plateau, with RMSE values of 56.5 W/m2 and 0.0422, 67.6 W/m2 and 0.0545, 98.6 W/m2 and 0.0992, and 78.0 98.6 W/m2 and 0.639. This comparison indicated an improved accuracy of at-surface upwelling radiance and surface albedo and significantly reduced data gaps. Valid observations increased substantially in comparison to the MCD43A2 data product, with the new method achieving an increase ranging from 40% to 200% at the four stations. Our study demonstrates that by integrating terrain, cloud properties, and radiative transfer modeling, the accuracy and completeness of retrieved surface albedo and radiance in complex terrains can be effectively improved. In this work, satellite data from the Clouds and Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instruments are analyzed to determine how the global absorbed sunlight and global entropy production rates have changed from 2002 to 2023. The data is used to test hypotheses derived from the Maximum Power Principle (MPP) and Maximum Entropy Production Principle (MEP) about the evolution of Earth's surface and atmosphere. The results indicate that both the rate of absorbed sunlight and global entropy production have increased over the last 20 years, which is consistent with the predictions of both hypotheses. Snow albedo feedback is one of the most crucial feedback processes that control equilibrium climate sensitivity, which is a central parameter for better prediction of future climate change. However, persistent large discrepancies and uncertainties are found in snow albedo feedback estimations. Remotely sensed snow cover products, atmospheric reanalysis data and radiative kernel data are used in this study to quantify snow albedo radiative forcing and its feedback on both hemispheric and global scales during 2003-2016. The strongest snow albedo radiative forcing is located north of 30°N, apart from Antarctica. In general, it has large monthly variation and peaks in spring. Snow albedo feedback is estimated to be 0.18 ± 0.08 W⋅m-2⋅°C-1 and 0.04 ± 0.02 W⋅m-2⋅°C-1 on hemispheric and global scales, respectively. Compared to previous studies, this paper focuses specifically on quantifying snow albedo feedback and demonstrates three improvements: (1) used high spatial and temporal resolution satellite-based snow cover data to determine the areas of snow albedo radiative forcing and feedback; (2) provided detailed information for model parameterization by using the results from (1), together with accurate description of snow cover change and constrained snow albedo and snow-free albedo data; and (3) effectively reduced the uncertainty of snow albedo feedback and increased its confidence level through the block bootstrap test. Our results of snow albedo feedback agreed well with other partially observation-based studies and indicate that the 25 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) models might have overestimated the snow albedo feedback, largely due to the overestimation of surface albedo change between snow-covered and snow-free surface in these models. Land degradation monitoring is of vital importance to provide scientific information for promoting sustainable land utilization. This paper presents an expert knowledge and BP-ANN-based approach to detect and monitor land degradation in an effort to overcome the deficiencies of image classification and vegetation index-based approaches. The proposed approach consists of three generic steps: (1) extraction of knowledge on the relationship between land degradation degree and predisposing factors, which are NDVI and albedo, from domain experts; (2) establishment of a land degradation detecting model based on the BP-ANN algorithm; and (3) land degradation dynamic analysis. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on the development of land degradation in the Ordos Plateau of China in 1990, 2000 and 2010. The results indicate that the proposed approach is reliable for monitoring land degradation, with an overall accuracy of 91.2%. From 1990-2010, a reverse trend of land degradation is observed in Ordos Plateau. Regions with relatively high land degradation dynamic were mostly located in the northeast of Ordos Plateau. Additionally, most of the regions have transferred from a hot spot of land degradation to a less changed area. It is suggested that land utilization optimization plays a key role for effective land degradation control. However, it should be highlighted that the goals of such strategies should aim at the main negative factors causing land degradation, and the land use type and its quantity must meet the demand of population and be reconciled with natural conditions. Cloud and aerosol polarization imaging detector (CAPI) is one of the important payloads on the China Carbon Dioxide Observation Satellite (TANSAT), which can realize multispectral polarization detection and accurate on-orbit calibration. The main function of the instrument is to identify the interference of clouds and aerosols in the atmospheric detection path and to improve the retrieval accuracy of greenhouse gases. Therefore, it is of great significance to accurately identify the clouds in remote sensing images. However, in order to meet the requirement of lightweight design, CAPI is only equipped with channels in the near-ultraviolet to near-infrared bands. It is difficult to achieve effective cloud recognition using traditional visible light to thermal infrared band spectral threshold cloud detection algorithms. In order to solve the above problem, this paper innovatively proposes a cloud detection method based on different threshold tests from near ultraviolet to near infrared (NNDT). This algorithm first introduces the 0.38 μm band and the ratio of 0.38 μm band to 1.64 μm band, to realize the separation of cloud pixels and clear sky pixels, which can take advantage of the obvious difference in radiation characteristics between clouds and ground objects in the near-ultraviolet band and the advantages of the band ratio in identifying clouds on the snow surface. The experimental results show that the cloud recognition hit rate (PODcloud) reaches 0.94 (ocean), 0.98 (vegetation), 0.99 (desert), and 0.86 (polar), which therefore achieve the application standard of CAPI data cloud detection The research shows that the NNDT algorithm replaces the demand for thermal infrared bands for cloud detection, gets rid of the dependence on the minimum surface reflectance database that is embodied in traditional cloud recognition algorithms, and lays the foundation for aerosol and CO2 parameter inversion. As indicated in Figure 1b, in general, the Northern Hemisphere (NH) has a higher variation of ST ( ST) than the Southern Hemisphere (SH) [[4]]. This paper investigates the changes of 20-year (2000-2019) mean surface temperature (ST), wind speed (WS), and albedo (AL) data from the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) over the globe with respect to those in 1961-1990. Figure 1h compares the changes of ST, WS, and AL from 1961-1990 to 2000-2009 in the NH and SH. Both ST and AL increased in 86% of the NH and 9% of SH regions. Anthropogenic climate change is increasing the occurrence of wildfires, especially in northern high latitudes, leading to a shift in land surface climate. This study aims to determine the predominant climatic effects of fires in boreal forests to assess their impact on vegetation composition, surface albedo, and snow dynamics. The influence of fire-induced changes on Earth's radiative forcing is investigated, while considering variations in burn severity and postfire vegetation structure. Six burn sites are explored in central Alaska's boreal region, alongside six control sites, by utilizing Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived albedo, Leaf Area Index (LAI), snowmelt timing data, AmeriFlux radiation, National Land Cover Database (NLCD) land cover, and Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity (MTBS) data. Key findings reveal significant postfire shifts in land cover at each site, mainly from high- to low-stature vegetation. A continuous increase in postfire surface albedo and negative surface shortwave forcing was noted even after 12 years postfire, particularly during the spring and at high-severity burn areas. Results indicate that the cooling effect from increased albedo during the snow season may surpass the warming effects of earlier snowmelt. Novel view synthesis using neural radiance fields (NeRFs) for remote sensing images is important for various applications. Traditional methods often use implicit representations for modeling, which have slow rendering speeds and cannot directly obtain the structure of the 3D scene. Some studies have introduced explicit representations, such as point clouds and voxels, but this kind of method often produces holes when processing large-scale scenes from remote sensing images. In addition, NeRFs with explicit 3D expression are more susceptible to transient phenomena (shadows and dynamic objects) and even plane holes. In order to address these issues, we propose an improved method for synthesizing new views of remote sensing images based on Point-NeRF. Our main idea focuses on two aspects: filling in the spatial structure and reconstructing ray-marching rendering using shadow information. First, we introduce hole detection, conducting inverse projection to acquire candidate points that are adjusted during training to fill the holes. We also design incremental weights to reduce the probability of pruning the plane points. We introduce a geometrically consistent shadow model based on a point cloud to divide the radiance into albedo and irradiance, allowing the model to predict the albedo of each point, rather than directly predicting the radiance. Intuitively, our proposed method uses a sparse point cloud generated with traditional methods for initialization and then builds the dense radiance field. We evaluate our method on the LEVIR_NVS data set, demonstrating its superior performance compared to state-of-the-art methods. The assessment of solar resources involves the utilization of physical or satellite models for the determination of solar radiation on the Earth's surface. However, a critical aspect of model validation necessitates comparisons against ground-truth measurements obtained from surface radiometers. Given the inherent challenges associated with establishing and maintaining solar radiation measurement networks—characterized by their expense, logistical complexities, limited station availability and the imperative consideration of climatic criteria for siting—countries endowed with substantial climatic diversity face difficulties in station placement. In this investigation, the measurements of annual solar irradiation, from meteorological stations of the National Weather Service in Mexico, were compared in different regions clustered by similarities in altitude, TL Linke, albedo and cloudiness index derived from satellite images; the main objective is to find the best ratio of annual solar irradiation in a set of clusters. Employing machine learning algorithms, this research endeavors to identify the most suitable model for predicting the ratio of annual solar irradiation and to determine the optimal number of clusters. The findings underscore the efficacy of the L-method as a robust technique for regionalization. Notably, the cloudiness index emerges as a pivotal feature, with the Random Forest algorithm yielding superior performance with a R2 score of 0.94, clustering Mexico into 17 regions.
