Deep neural networks (DNNs) are increasingly important in the medical diagnosis of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. However, research has shown that DNNs are highly vulnerable to adversarial examples, which can be created by carefully crafted perturbations. This vulnerability can lead to potential medical accidents. This poses new challenges for the application of DNNs in the medical diagnosis of ECG signals. This paper proposes a novel network Channel Activation Suppression with Lipschitz Constraints Net (CASLCNet), which employs the Channel-wise Activation Suppressing (CAS) strategy to dynamically adjust the contribution of different channels to the class prediction and uses the 1-Lipschitz's ℓ∞ distance network as a robust classifier to reduce the impact of adversarial perturbations on the model itself in order to increase the adversarial robustness of the model. The experimental results demonstrate that CASLCNet achieves A C C r o b u s t scores of 91.03% and 83.01% when subjected to PGD attacks on the MIT-BIH and CPSC2018 datasets, respectively, which proves that the proposed method in this paper enhances the model's adversarial robustness while maintaining a high accuracy rate. Background and objectives: This review aims to delve into the role of artificial intelligence in medicine. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by superficial mucosal inflammation, rectal bleeding, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. By identifying the challenges inherent in UC diagnosis, we seek to highlight the potential impact of artificial intelligence on enhancing both diagnosis and treatment methodologies for this condition. Method: A targeted, non-systematic review of literature relating to ulcerative colitis was undertaken. The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched to categorize a well-rounded understanding of the field of artificial intelligence and its developing role in the diagnosis and treatment of ulcerative colitis. Articles that were thought to be relevant were included. This paper only included articles published in English. Results: Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer algorithms capable of learning, problem solving and decision-making. Throughout our review, we highlighted the role and importance of artificial intelligence in modern medicine, emphasizing its role in diagnosis through AI-assisted endoscopies and histology analysis and its enhancements in the treatment of ulcerative colitis. Despite these advances, AI is still hindered due to its current lack of adaptability to real-world scenarios and its difficulty in widespread data availability, which hinders the growth of AI-led data analysis. Conclusions: When considering the potential of artificial intelligence, its ability to enhance patient care from a diagnostic and therapeutic perspective shows signs of promise. For the true utilization of artificial intelligence, some roadblocks must be addressed. The datasets available to AI may not truly reflect the real-world, which would prevent its impact in all clinical scenarios when dealing with a spectrum of patients with different backgrounds and presenting factors. Considering this, the shift in medical diagnostics and therapeutics is coinciding with evolving technology. With a continuous advancement in artificial intelligence programming and a perpetual surge in patient datasets, these networks can be further enhanced and supplemented with a greater cohort, enabling better outcomes and prediction models for the future of modern medicine. For over a century, induction furnaces have been used in the core of foundries for metal melting and heating. They provide high melting/heating rates with optimal efficiency. The occurrence of faults not only imposes safety risks but also reduces productivity due to unscheduled shutdowns. The problem of diagnosing faults in induction furnaces has not yet been studied, and this work is the first to propose a data-driven framework for diagnosing faults in this application. This paper presents a deep neural network framework for diagnosing electrical faults by measuring real-time electrical parameters at the supply side. Experimental and sensory measurements are collected from multiple energy analyzer devices installed in the foundry. Next, a semi-supervised learning approach, known as the local outlier factor, has been used to discriminate normal and faulty samples from each other and label the data samples. Then, a deep neural network is trained with the collected labeled samples. The performance of the developed model is compared with several state-of-the-art techniques in terms of various performance metrics. The results demonstrate the superior performance of the selected deep neural network model over other classifiers, with an average F-measure of 0.9187. Due to the black box nature of the constructed neural network, the model predictions are interpreted by Shapley additive explanations and local interpretable model-agnostic explanations. The interpretability analysis reveals that classified faults are closely linked to variations in odd voltage/current harmonics of order 3, 11, 13, and 17, highlighting the critical impact of these parameters on the model's prediction. Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is a serious medical condition that necessitates a prompt and exhaustive medical diagnosis. This paper presents a multi-label ICH classification issue with six different types of hemorrhages, namely epidural (EPD), intraparenchymal (ITP), intraventricular (ITV), subarachnoid (SBC), subdural (SBD), and Some. A patient may experience numerous hemorrhages at the same time in some situations. A CT scan of a patient's skull is used to detect and classify the type of ICH hemorrhage(s) present. First, our model determines whether there is a hemorrhage or not; if there is a hemorrhage, the model attempts to identify the type of hemorrhage(s). In this paper, we present a hybrid deep learning approach that combines convolutional neural network (CNN) and Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) approaches (Conv-LSTM). In addition, to propose viable solutions for the problem, we used a Systematic Windowing technique with a Conv-LSTM. To ensure the efficacy of the proposed model, experiments are conducted on the RSNA dataset. The suggested model provides higher sensitivity (93.87%), specificity (96.45%), precision (95.21%), and accuracy (95.14%). Medical images play an important role in medical diagnosis and treatment. Oncologists analyze images to determine the different characteristics of deadly diseases, plan the therapy, and observe the evolution of the disease. The objective of this paper is to propose a method for the detection of brain tumors. Brain tumors are identified from Magnetic Resonance (MR) images by performing suitable segmentation procedures. The latest technical literature concerning radiographic images of the brain shows that deep learning methods can be implemented to extract specific features of brain tumors, aiding clinical diagnosis. For this reason, most data scientists and AI researchers work on Machine Learning methods for designing automatic screening procedures. Indeed, an automated method would result in quicker segmentation findings, providing a robust output with respect to possible differences in data sources, mostly due to different procedures in data recording and storing, resulting in a more consistent identification of brain tumors. To improve the performance of the segmentation procedure, new architectures are proposed and tested in this paper. We propose deep neural networks for the detection of brain tumors, trained on the MRI scans of patients' brains. The proposed architectures are based on convolutional neural networks and inception modules for brain tumor segmentation. A comparison of these proposed architectures with the baseline reference ones shows very interesting results. MI-Unet showed a performance increase in comparison to baseline Unet architecture by 7.5 % in dice score, 23.91 % insensitivity, and 7.09 % in specificity. Depth-wise separable MI-Unet showed a performance increase by 10.83 % in dice score, 2.97 % in sensitivity, and 12.72 % in specificity as compared to the baseline Unet architecture. Hybrid Unet architecture achieved performance improvement of 9.71 % in dice score, 3.56 % in sensitivity, and 12.6 % in specificity. Featured Application: Investigation into whether and how much AI-based heat-maps can assist radiologists when making diagnoses based on medical images. In modern medicine, medical imaging technologies such as computed tomography (CT), X-ray, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, etc., have been proven to provide useful diagnostic information by displaying areas of a lesion or tumor not visible to the human eye, and may also help provide additional recessive information by using modern data analysis methods. These methods, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, are based on deep learning architectures, and have shown remarkable results in recent studies. However, the lack of explanatory ability of connection-based, instead of algorithm-based, deep learning technologies is one of the main reasons for the delay in the acceptance of these technologies in the mainstream medical field. One of the recent methods that may offer the explanatory ability for the CNN classes of deep learning neural networks is the gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) method, which produces heat-maps that may offer explanations of the classification results. There are already many studies in the literature that compare the objective metrics of Grad-CAM-generated heat-maps against other methods. However, the subjective evaluation of AI-based classification/prediction results using medical images by qualified personnel could potentially contribute more to the acceptance of AI than objective metrics. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether and how the Grad-CAM heat-maps can help physicians and radiologists in making diagnoses by presenting the results from AI-based classifications as well as their associated Grad-CAM-generated heat-maps to a qualified radiologist. For many parasitic diseases, the microscopic examination of clinical samples such as urine and stool still serves as the diagnostic reference standard, primarily because microscopes are accessible and cost-effective. However, conventional microscopy is laborious, requires highly skilled personnel, and is highly subjective. Requirements for skilled operators, coupled with the cost and maintenance needs of the microscopes, which is hardly done in endemic countries, presents grossly limited access to the diagnosis of parasitic diseases in resource-limited settings. The urgent requirement for the management of tropical diseases such as schistosomiasis, which is now focused on elimination, has underscored the critical need for the creation of access to easy-to-use diagnosis for case detection, community mapping, and surveillance. In this paper, we present a low-cost automated digital microscope—the Schistoscope—which is capable of automatic focusing and scanning regions of interest in prepared microscope slides, and automatic detection of Schistosoma haematobium eggs in captured images. The device was developed using widely accessible distributed manufacturing methods and off-the-shelf components to enable local manufacturability and ease of maintenance. For proof of principle, we created a Schistosoma haematobium egg dataset of over 5000 images captured from spiked and clinical urine samples from field settings and demonstrated the automatic detection of Schistosoma haematobium eggs using a trained deep neural network model. The experiments and results presented in this paper collectively illustrate the robustness, stability, and optical performance of the device, making it suitable for use in the monitoring and evaluation of schistosomiasis control programs in endemic settings. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) ability to learn, correct errors, and transform a large amount of raw data into beneficial medical decisions for treatment and care has increased in popularity for enhanced patient safety and quality of care. Therefore, this paper reviews the critical role of ANNs in providing valuable insights for patients' healthcare decisions and efficient disease diagnosis. We study different types of ANNs in the existing literature that advance ANNs' adaptation for complex applications. Specifically, we investigate ANNs' advances for predicting viral, cancer, skin, and COVID-19 diseases. Furthermore, we propose a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model called ConXNet, based on chest radiography images, to improve the detection accuracy of COVID-19 disease. ConXNet is trained and tested using a chest radiography image dataset obtained from Kaggle, achieving more than 97% accuracy and 98% precision, which is better than other existing state-of-the-art models, such as DeTraC, U-Net, COVID MTNet, and COVID-Net, having 93.1%, 94.10%, 84.76%, and 90% accuracy and 94%, 95%, 85%, and 92% precision, respectively. The results show that the ConXNet model performed significantly well for a relatively large dataset compared with the aforementioned models. Moreover, the ConXNet model reduces the time complexity by using dropout layers and batch normalization techniques. Finally, we highlight future research directions and challenges, such as the complexity of the algorithms, insufficient available data, privacy and security, and integration of biosensing with ANNs. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a serious movement disorder that may eventually progress to mild cognitive dysfunction (MCI) and dementia. According to the Parkinson's foundation, one million Americans were diagnosed with PD and almost 10 million individuals suffer from the disease worldwide. An early and precise clinical diagnosis of PD will ensure an early initiation of effective therapeutic treatments, which will potentially slow down the progression of the disease and improve the quality of life for patients and their caregivers. Machine and deep learning are promising technologies that may assist and support clinicians in providing an objective and reliable diagnosis of the disease based upon significant and unique features identified from relevant medical data. In this paper, the author provides a comprehensive review of the artificial intelligence techniques that were recently proposed during the period from 2016 to 2022 for the screening and staging of PD as well as the identification of the biomarkers of the disease based on Electroencephalography (EEG), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), speech tests, handwriting exams, and sensory data. In addition, the author highlights the current and future trends for PD diagnosis based machine and deep learning and discusses the limitations, challenges, potential future solutions, and recommendations for a reliable application of machine and deep learning for PD detection and screening. Malaria is predominant in many subtropical nations with little health-monitoring infrastructure. To forecast malaria and condense the disease's impact on the population, time series prediction models are necessary. The conventional technique of detecting malaria disease is for certified technicians to examine blood smears visually for parasite-infected RBC (red blood cells) underneath a microscope. This procedure is ineffective, and the diagnosis depends on the individual performing the test and his/her experience. Automatic image identification systems based on machine learning have previously been used to diagnose malaria blood smears. However, so far, the practical performance has been insufficient. In this paper, we have made a performance analysis of deep learning algorithms in the diagnosis of malaria disease. We have used Neural Network models like CNN, MobileNetV2, and ResNet50 to perform this analysis. The dataset was extracted from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) website and consisted of 27,558 photos, including 13,780 parasitized cell images and 13,778 uninfected cell images. In conclusion, the MobileNetV2 model outperformed by achieving an accuracy rate of 97.06% for better disease detection. Degenerative nerve diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases have always been a global issue of concern. Approximately 1/6th of the world's population suffers from these disorders, yet there are no definitive solutions to cure these diseases after the symptoms set in. The best way to treat these disorders is to detect them at an earlier stage. Many of these diseases are genetic; this enables machine learning algorithms to give inferences based on the patient's medical records and history. Machine learning algorithms such as deep neural networks are also critical for the early identification of degenerative nerve diseases. The significant applications of machine learning and deep learning in early diagnosis and establishing potential therapies for degenerative nerve diseases have motivated us to work on this review paper. Through this review, we covered various machine learning and deep learning algorithms and their application in the diagnosis of degenerative nerve diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Furthermore, we also included the recent advancements in each of these models, which improved their capabilities for classifying degenerative nerve diseases. The limitations of each of these methods are also discussed. In the conclusion, we mention open research challenges and various alternative technologies, such as virtual reality and Big data analytics, which can be useful for the diagnosis of degenerative nerve diseases. Featured Application: Medical diagnosis and computer-aided diagnosis systems. Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among women. Accurate diagnosis at an early stage can reduce the mortality associated with this disease. Governments and health organizations stress the importance of early detection of breast cancer as it is related to an increase in the number of available treatment options and increased survival. Early detection gives patients the best chance of receiving effective treatment. Different types of images and imaging modalities are used in the detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. One of the imaging types is "infrared thermal" breast imaging, where a screening instrument is used to measure the temperature distribution of breast tissue. Although it has not been used often, compared to mammograms, it showed promising results when used for early detection. It also has many advantages as it is non-invasive, safe, painless, and inexpensive. The literature has indicated that the use of thermal images with deep neural networks improves the accuracy of early diagnosis of breast malformation. Therefore, in this paper, we aim to investigate to what extent convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with attention mechanisms (AMs) can provide satisfactory detection results in thermal breast cancer images. We present a model for breast cancer detection based on deep neural networks with AMs using thermal images from the Database for Research Mastology with Infrared Image (DMR-IR). The model will be evaluated in terms of accuracy, sensitivity and specificity, and will be compared against state-of-the-art breast cancer detection methods. The AMs with the CNN model achieved encouraging test accuracy rates of 99.46%, 99.37%, and 99.30% on the breast thermal dataset. The test accuracy of CNNs without AMs was 92.32%, whereas CNNs with AMs achieved an improvement in accuracy of 7%. Featured Application: The proposed approach can be applied to any of the Convolutional Neural Networks-based architecture to explain, evaluate and validate the model's decisions. Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a common complication associated with diabetes, causing irreversible vision loss. Early detection of DR can be very helpful for clinical treatment. Ophthalmologists' manual approach to DR diagnoses is expensive and time-consuming; thus, automatic detection of DR is becoming vital, especially with the increasing number of diabetes patients worldwide. Deep learning methods for analyzing medical images have recently become prevalent, achieving state-of-the-art results. Consequently, the need for interpretable deep learning has increased. Although it was demonstrated that the representation depth is beneficial for classification accuracy for DR diagnoses, model explainability is rarely analyzed. In this paper, we evaluated three state-of-the-art deep learning models to accelerate DR detection using the fundus images dataset. We have also proposed a novel explainability metric to leverage domain-based knowledge and validate the reasoning of a deep learning model's decisions. We conducted two experiments to classify fundus images into normal and abnormal cases and to categorize the images according to the DR severity. The results show the superiority of the VGG-16 model in terms of accuracy, precision, and recall for both binary and DR five-stage classification. Although the achieved accuracy of all evaluated models demonstrates their capability to capture some lesion patterns in the relevant DR cases, the evaluation of the models in terms of their explainability using the Grad-CAM-based color visualization approach shows that the models are not necessarily able to detect DR related lesions to make the classification decision. Pulmonary diseases are life-threatening diseases commonly observed worldwide, and timely diagnosis of these diseases is essential. Meanwhile, increased use of Convolution Neural Networks has promoted the advancement of computer-assisted clinical recommendation systems for diagnosing diseases using chest radiographs. The texture and shape of the tissues in the diagnostic images are essential aspects of prognosis. Therefore, in the latest studies, the vast set of images with a larger resolution is paired with deep learning techniques to enhance the performance of the disease diagnosis in chest radiographs. Moreover, pulmonary diseases have irregular and different sizes; therefore, several studies sought to add new components to existing deep learning techniques for acquiring multi-scale imaging features from diagnostic chest X-rays. However, most of the attempts do not consider the computation overhead and lose the spatial details in an effort to capture the larger receptive field for obtaining the discriminative features from high-resolution chest X-rays. In this paper, we propose an explainable and lightweight Multi-Scale Chest X-ray Network (MS-CheXNet) to predict abnormal diseases from the diagnostic chest X-rays. The MS-CheXNet consists of four following main subnetworks: (1) Multi-Scale Dilation Layer (MSDL), which includes multiple and stacked dilation convolution channels that consider the larger receptive field and captures the variable sizes of pulmonary diseases by obtaining more discriminative spatial features from the input chest X-rays; (2) Depthwise Separable Convolution Neural Network (DS-CNN) is used to learn imaging features by adjusting lesser parameters compared to the conventional CNN, making the overall network lightweight and computationally inexpensive, making it suitable for mobile vision tasks; (3) a fully connected Deep Neural Network module is used for predicting abnormalities from the chest X-rays; and (4) Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) technique is employed to check the decision models' transparency and understand their ability to arrive at a decision by visualizing the discriminative image regions and localizing the chest diseases. The proposed work is compared with existing disease prediction models on chest X-rays and state-of-the-art deep learning strategies to assess the effectiveness of the proposed model. The proposed model is tested with a publicly available Open-I Dataset and data collected from a private hospital. COVID-19 is a transferable disease inherited from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. A total of 594 million people have been infected, and 6.4 million human beings have died due to COVID-19. The fastest way to diagnose the disease is by radiography. Deep learning has been the most popular technique for image classification during the last decade. This paper aims to examine the contributions of machine learning for the detection of COVID-19 using Deep Learning and explores the overall application of convolutional neural networks of some famous state-of-the-art deep learning pre-trained models. In this research, our objective is to explore the various image classification strategies for CXIs and the application of deep learning models for optimization and feature selection. The study presented in this article shows that the accuracy of deep learning models when detecting COVID-19 on the basis of chest X-ray images ranges from 93 percent to above 99 percent. Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the tissues surrounding the tooth that results in loss of periodontal attachment detected as clinical attachment loss (CAL). The mildest form of periodontal disease is gingivitis, which is a necessary condition for periodontitis development. We can distinguish also some modifying factors which have an influence on the rate of development of periodontitis from which the most important are smoking and poorly controlled diabetes. According to the new classification from 2017, we can identify four stages of periodontitis and three grades of periodontitis. Grades tell us about the periodontitis progression risk and may be helpful in treatment planning and motivating the patients. Artificial neural networks (ANN) are widely used in medicine and in dentistry as an additional tool to support clinicians in their work. In this paper, ANN was used to assess grades of periodontitis in the group of patients. Gender, age, nicotinism approximal plaque index (API), bleeding on probing (BoP), clinical attachment loss (CAL), and pocket depth (PD) were taken into consideration. There were no statistically significant differences in the clinical periodontal assessment in relation to the neural network assessment. Based on the definition of the sensitivity and specificity in medicine we obtained 85.7% and 80.0% as a correctly diagnosed and excluded disease, respectively. The quality of the neural network, defined as the percentage of correctly classified patients according to the grade of periodontitis was 84.2% for the training set. The percentage of incorrectly classified patients according to the grade of periodontitis was 15.8%. Structural anomaly diagnosis, such as damage identification, is a continuously interesting issue. Artificial neural networks have an excellent ability to model complex structure dynamics. In this paper, an artificial neural network model is used to describe the relationship between structural responses and anomalies such as stiffness reduction due to damages. Random acceleration and displacement responses as generally measured data are used as the input to the artificial neural network, and the output of the artificial neural network is the anomaly severity. The artificial neural network model is set up by training and then validated using random vibration responses with different structural anomalies. The structural anomaly diagnosis method based on the artificial neural network model using random acceleration and displacement responses is applied to a five-story building structure under random base excitations (seismic loading). Anomalies in the structure are denoted by stiffness reduction. Structural anomaly diagnosis using random acceleration responses is compared with that using random displacement responses. The numerical results show the effects of different random vibration responses used on the accuracy of predicting stiffness reduction. The actual incomplete measurements include intensive noise, finite sampling time length, and limited measurement points. Background: Machine learning (ML) is a key component of artificial intelligence (AI). The terms machine learning, artificial intelligence, and deep learning are erroneously used interchangeably as they appear as monolithic nebulous entities. This technology offers immense possibilities and opportunities to advance diagnostics in the field of medicine and dentistry. This necessitates a deep understanding of AI and its essential components, such as machine learning (ML), artificial neural networks (ANN), and deep learning (DP). Aim: This review aims to enlighten clinicians regarding AI and its applications in the diagnosis of oral diseases, along with the prospects and challenges involved. Review results: AI has been used in the diagnosis of various oral diseases, such as dental caries, maxillary sinus diseases, periodontal diseases, salivary gland diseases, TMJ disorders, and oral cancer through clinical data and diagnostic images. Larger data sets would enable AI to predict the occurrence of precancerous conditions. They can aid in population-wide surveillance and decide on referrals to specialists. AI can efficiently detect microfeatures beyond the human eye and augment its predictive power in critical diagnosis. Conclusion: Although studies have recognized the benefit of AI, the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning has not been integrated into routine dentistry. AI is still in the research phase. The coming decade will see immense changes in diagnosis and healthcare built on the back of this research. Initially, a bibliometric analysis of the publication is carried out using data from the Scopus and Web of Science (WOS) databases. The bibliometric study of 1216 publications was undertaken to determine the most prolific authors, nations, organizations, and most cited articles. The review then summarizes the most recent trends and approaches in machine-learning-based disease diagnosis (MLBDD), considering the following factors: algorithm, disease types, data type, application, and evaluation metrics. The idea of Ubiquitous Power Internet of Things (UPIoTs) accelerates the development of intelligent monitoring and diagnostic technologies. In this paper, a diagnostic method suitable for power equipment in an interference environment was proposed based on the deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN): MobileNet-V2 and Digital Image Processing (DIP) methods to conduct fault identification process: including fault type classification and fault localization. A data visualization theory was put forward in this paper, which was applied in frequency response (FR) curves of transformer to obtain dataset. After the image augmentation process, the dataset was input into the deep CNN: MobileNet-V2 for training procedures. Then a spatial-probabilistic mapping relationship was established based on traditional Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) fault diagnostic method. Each image in the dataset was compared with the fingerprint values to get traditional diagnosing results. Next, the anti-interference abilities of the proposed CNN-DIP method were compared with that of the traditional one while the magnitude of the interference gradually increased. Finally, the fault tolerance of the proposed method was verified by further analyzing the deviations between the wrong diagnosing results with the corresponding actual labels. Experimental results showed that the proposed deep visual identification (CNN-DIP) method has a higher diagnosing accuracy, a stronger anti-interference ability and a better fault tolerance. Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common type of dementia, is a progressive disease beginning with mild memory loss, possibly leading to loss of the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to environments. It can seriously affect a person's ability to carry out daily activities. Therefore, early diagnosis of AD is conducive to better treatment and avoiding further deterioration of the disease. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become the main tool for humans to study brain tissues. It can clearly reflect the internal structure of a brain and plays an important role in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. MRI data is widely used for disease diagnosis. In this paper, based on MRI data, a method combining a 3D convolutional neural network and ensemble learning is proposed to improve the diagnosis accuracy. Then, a data denoising module is proposed to reduce boundary noise. The experimental results on ADNI dataset demonstrate that the model proposed in this paper improves the training speed of the neural network and achieves 95.2% accuracy in AD vs. NC (normal control) task and 77.8% accuracy in sMCI (stable mild cognitive impairment) vs. pMCI (progressive mild cognitive impairment) task in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. The use of a deep neural network scheme is proposed to help clinicians solve a difficult diagnosis problem in neurology. The proposed multilayer architecture includes a feature engineering step (from time-frequency transformation), a double compressing stage trained by unsupervised learning, and a classification stage trained by supervised learning. After fine-tuning, the deep network is able to discriminate well the class of patients from controls with around 90% sensitivity and specificity. This deep model gives better classification performance than some other standard discriminative learning algorithms. As in clinical problems there is a need for explaining decisions, an effort has been carried out to qualitatively justify the classification results. Background: Cutaneous melanoma remains an increasing global public health burden, particularly in fair-skinned populations. Advancing technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), may provide an additional tool for clinicians to help detect malignancies with a more accurate success rate. This systematic review aimed to report the performance metrics of commercially available convolutional neural networks (CNNs) tasked with detecting MM. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed using CINAHL, Medline, Scopus, ScienceDirect and Web of Science databases. Results: A total of 16 articles reporting MM were included in this review. The combined number of melanomas detected was 1160, and non-melanoma lesions were 33,010. The performance of market-approved technology and clinician performance for classifying melanoma was highly heterogeneous, with sensitivity ranging from 16.4 to 100.0%, specificity between 40.0 and 98.3% and accuracy between 44.0 and 92.0%. Less heterogeneity was observed when clinicians worked in unison with AI, with sensitivity ranging between 83.3 and 100.0%, specificity between 83.7 and 87.3%, and accuracy between 86.4 and 86.9%. Conclusion: Instead of focusing on the performance of AI versus clinicians for classifying melanoma, more consistent performance has been obtained when clinicians' work is supported by AI, facilitating management decisions and improving health outcomes. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a prevalent sleep disorder, is intimately associated with various other diseases, particularly cardiovascular conditions. The conventional diagnostic method, nocturnal polysomnography (PSG), despite its widespread use, faces challenges due to its high cost and prolonged duration. Recent developments in electrocardiogram-based diagnostic techniques have opened new avenues for addressing these challenges, although they often require a deep understanding of feature engineering. In this study, we introduce an innovative method for OSA classification that combines a composite deep convolutional neural network model with a multimodal strategy for automatic feature extraction. This approach involves transforming the original dataset into scalogram images that reflect heart rate variability attributes and Gramian angular field matrix images that reveal temporal characteristics, aiming to enhance the diversity and richness of data features. The model comprises automatic feature extraction and feature enhancement components and has been trained and validated on the PhysioNet Apnea-ECG database. The experimental results demonstrate the model's exceptional performance in diagnosing OSA, achieving an accuracy of 96.37%, a sensitivity of 94.67%, a specificity of 97.44%, and an AUC of 0.96. The diagnosis of severe COVID-19 lung infection is important because it carries a higher risk for the patient and requires prompt treatment with oxygen therapy and hospitalization while those with less severe lung infection often stay on observation. Also, severe infections are more likely to have long-standing residual changes in their lungs and may need follow-up imaging. We have developed deep learning neural network models for classifying severe vs. non-severe lung infections in COVID-19 patients on chest radiographs (CXR). A deep learning U-Net model was developed to segment the lungs. Inception-v1 and Inception-v4 models were trained for the classification of severe vs. non-severe COVID-19 infection. Four CXR datasets from multi-country and multi-institutional sources were used to develop and evaluate the models. The combined dataset consisted of 5748 cases and 6193 CXR images with physicians' severity ratings as reference standard. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to evaluate model performance. We studied the reproducibility of classification performance using the different combinations of training and validation data sets. We also evaluated the generalizability of the trained deep learning models using both independent internal and external test sets. The Inception-v1 based models achieved AUC ranging between 0.81 ± 0.02 and 0.84 ± 0.0, while the Inception-v4 models achieved AUC in the range of 0.85 ± 0.06 and 0.89 ± 0.01, on the independent test sets, respectively. One of the most powerful techniques to diagnose cardiovascular diseases is to analyze the electrocardiogram (ECG). To increase diagnostic sensitivity, the ECG might need to be acquired using an ambulatory system, as symptoms may occur during a patient's daily life. In this paper, we propose using an ambulatory ECG (aECG) recording device with a low number of leads and then estimating the views that would have been obtained with a standard ECG location, reconstructing the complete Standard 12-Lead System, the most widely used system for diagnosis by cardiologists. Four approaches have been explored, including Linear Regression with ECG segmentation and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). The best reconstruction algorithm is based on ANN, which reconstructs the actual ECG signal with high precision, as the results bring a high accuracy (RMS Error < 13 μ V and CC > 99.7%) for the set of patients analyzed in this paper. Recently, deep learning models have been used in the field of image-based skin-lesion diagnosis and have demonstrated diagnostic efficiency on par with that of dermatologists. This study proposes a Computer-Aided Diagnostic (CAD) system to diagnose subjects with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The CAD system identifies morphological anomalies within the brain regions of ASD subjects. Cortical features are scored according to their contribution in diagnosing a subject to be ASD or typically developed (TD) based on a trained machine-learning (ML) model. This approach opens the hope for developing a new CAD system for early personalized diagnosis of ASD. We propose a framework to extract the cerebral cortex from structural MRI as well as identifying the altered areas in the cerebral cortex. This framework consists of the following five main steps: (i) extraction of cerebral cortex from structural MRI; (ii) cortical parcellation to a standard atlas; (iii) identifying ASD associated cortical markers; (iv) adjusting feature values according to sex and age; (v) building tailored neuro-atlases to identify ASD; and (vi) artificial neural networks (NN) are trained to classify ASD. The classification of electrocardiograms (ECG) plays an important role in the clinical diagnosis of heart disease. This paper proposes an effective system development and implementation for ECG classification based on faster regions with a convolutional neural network (Faster R-CNN) algorithm. The original one-dimensional ECG signals contain the preprocessed patient ECG signals and some ECG recordings from the MIT-BIH database in this experiment. Each ECG beat of one-dimensional ECG signals was transformed into a two-dimensional image for experimental training sets and test sets. As a result, we classified the ECG beats into five categories with an average accuracy of 99.21%. In addition, we did a comparative experiment using the one versus rest support vector machine (OVR SVM) algorithm, and the classification accuracy of the proposed Faster R-CNN was shown to be 2.59% higher. Heart disease is a significant public health problem, and early detection is crucial for effective treatment and management. Conventional and noninvasive techniques are cumbersome, time-consuming, inconvenient, expensive, and unsuitable for frequent measurement or diagnosis. With the advance of artificial intelligence (AI), new invasive techniques emerging in research are detecting heart conditions using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL). Machine learning models have been used with the publicly available dataset from the internet about heart health; in contrast, deep learning techniques have recently been applied to analyze electrocardiograms (ECG) or similar vital data to detect heart diseases. Significant limitations of these datasets are their small size regarding the number of patients and features and the fact that many are imbalanced datasets. Furthermore, the trained models must be more reliable and accurate in medical settings. This study proposes a hybrid one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN), which uses a large dataset accumulated from online survey data and selected features using feature selection algorithms. The 1D CNN proved to show better accuracy compared to contemporary machine learning algorithms and artificial neural networks. The non-coronary heart disease (no-CHD) and CHD validation data showed an accuracy of 80.1% and 76.9%, respectively. The model was compared with an artificial neural network, random forest, AdaBoost, and a support vector machine. Overall, 1D CNN proved to show better performance in terms of accuracy, false negative rates, and false positive rates. The early diagnosis of sepsis reduces the risk of the patient's death. Gradient-based algorithms are applied to the neural network models used in the estimation of sepsis in the literature. However, these algorithms become stuck at the local minimum in solution space. In recent years, swarm intelligence and an evolutionary approach have shown proper results. In this study, a novel hybrid metaheuristic algorithm was proposed for optimization with regard to the weights of the deep neural network and applied for the early diagnosis of sepsis. The proposed algorithm aims to reach the global minimum with a local search strategy capable of exploring and exploiting particles in Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and using the mental search operator of the Human Mental Search algorithm (HMS). The benchmark functions utilized to compare the performance of HMS, PSO, and HMS-PSO revealed that the proposed approach is more reliable, durable, and adjustable than other applied algorithms. HMS-PSO is integrated with a deep neural network (HMS-PSO-DNN). The study focused on predicting sepsis with HMS-PSO-DNN, utilizing a dataset of 640 patients aged 18 to 60. The HMS-PSO-DNN model gave a better mean squared error (MSE) result than other algorithms in terms of accuracy, robustness, and performance. This paper presents the use of artificial neural networks in diagnosing the technical condition of drive systems operating under variable conditions. The effects of temperature and load variations on the values of diagnostic parameters were considered. An experiment was conducted on a testing rig where a variable load was introduced corresponding to the load of the main gearbox of the bucket wheel excavator. The signals of vibration acceleration on the gearbox body, rotational speed, and current consumption of the drive motor for different values of oil temperature were measured. Synchronous analysis was performed, and the values of order amplitudes and the corresponding values of current, speed, and temperature were determined. Such datasets were the learning vectors for a set of artificial deep learning neural networks. A new approach proposed in this paper is to train the network using a learning set consisting only of data from the efficient system. The responses of the trained neural networks to new data from the undamaged system were performed against the response to data recorded for three damage states: misalignment, unbalance, and simultaneous misalignment and unbalance. As a result, a diagnostic parameter as a normalized measure of the deviation of the network results was developed for the faulted system from the result for the undamaged condition. The maintenance paradigm has evolved over the last few years and companies that want to remain competitive in the market need to provide condition-based maintenance (CBM). The diagnosis and prognosis of the health status of equipment, predictive maintenance (PdM), are fundamental strategies to perform informed maintenance, increasing the company's profit. This article aims to present a diagnosis and prognosis methodology using a hidden Markov model (HMM) classifier to recognise the equipment status in real time and a deep neural network (DNN), specifically a gated recurrent unit (GRU), to determine this same status in a future of one week. The data collected by the sensors go through several phases, starting by cleaning them. After that, temporal windows are created in order to generate statistical features of the time domain to better understand the equipment's behaviour. These features go through a normalisation to produce inputs for a feature extraction process, via a principal component analysis (PCA). After the dimensional reduction and obtaining new features with more information, a clustering is performed by the K-means algorithm, in order to group similar data. These clusters enter the HMM classifier as observable states. After training using the Baum–Welch algorithm, the Viterbi algorithm is used to find the best path of hidden states that represent the diagnosis of the equipment, containing three states: state 1—"State of Good Operation"; state 2—"Warning State"; state 3—"Failure State". Once the equipment diagnosis is complete, the GRU model is used to predict the future, both of the observable states as well as the hidden states coming out from the HMM. In recent years, various deep neural networks with different learning paradigms have been widely employed in various applications, including medical diagnosis, image analysis, self-driving vehicles and others. The activation functions employed in deep neural networks have a huge impact on the training model and the reliability of the model. The Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) has recently emerged as the most popular and extensively utilized activation function. ReLU has some flaws, such as the fact that it is only active when the units are positive during back-propagation and zero otherwise. This causes neurons to die (dying ReLU) and a shift in bias. However, unlike ReLU activation functions, Swish activation functions do not remain stable or move in a single direction. This research proposes a new activation function named NIPUNA for deep neural networks. We test this activation by training on customized convolutional neural networks (CCNN). On benchmark datasets (Fashion MNIST images of clothes, MNIST dataset of handwritten digits), the contributions are examined and compared to various activation functions. Large-scale datasets, which have sufficient and identical quantities of data in each class, are the main factor in the success of deep-learning-based classification models for vision tasks. A shortage of sufficient data and interclass imbalanced data distribution, which often arise in the medical domain, cause modern deep neural networks to suffer greatly from imbalanced learning and overfitting. A diagnostic model of diabetic retinopathy (DR) that is trained from such a dataset using supervised learning is severely biased toward the majority class. To enhance the efficiency of imbalanced learning, the proposal of this study is to leverage retinal fundus images without human annotations by self-supervised or semi-supervised learning. The proposed approach to DR detection is to add an auxiliary procedure to the target task that identifies DR using supervised learning. The added process uses unlabeled data to pre-train the model that first learns features from data using self-supervised or semi-supervised learning, and then the pre-trained model is transferred with the learned parameter to the target model. This wrapper algorithm of learning from unlabeled data can help the model gain more information from samples in the minority class, thereby improving imbalanced learning to some extent. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that the model trained with the proposed method outperformed the one trained with only the supervised learning baseline utilizing the same data, with an accuracy improvement of 4~5%. To further examine the method proposed in this study, a comparison is conducted, and our results show that the proposed method also performs much better than some state-of-the-art methods. In the case of EyePaCS, for example, the proposed method outperforms the customized CNN model by 9%. Through experiments, we further find that the models trained with a smaller but balanced dataset are not worse than those trained with a larger but imbalanced dataset. In recent times, several machine learning models have been built to aid in the prediction of diverse diseases and to minimize diagnostic errors made by clinicians. However, since most medical datasets seem to be imbalanced, conventional machine learning algorithms tend to underperform when trained with such data, especially in the prediction of the minority class. To address this challenge and proffer a robust model for the prediction of diseases, this paper introduces an approach that comprises of feature learning and classification stages that integrate an enhanced sparse autoencoder (SAE) and Softmax regression, respectively. In the SAE network, sparsity is achieved by penalizing the weights of the network, unlike conventional SAEs that penalize the activations within the hidden layers. For the classification task, the Softmax classifier is further optimized to achieve excellent performance. Hence, the proposed approach has the advantage of effective feature learning and robust classification performance. When employed for the prediction of three diseases, the proposed method obtained test accuracies of 98%, 97%, and 91% for chronic kidney disease, cervical cancer, and heart disease, respectively, which shows superior performance compared to other machine learning algorithms. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common fundus disease that leads to irreversible blindness, which plagues the working-age population. Automatic medical imaging diagnosis provides a non-invasive method to assist ophthalmologists in timely screening of suspected DR cases, which prevents its further deterioration. However, the state-of-the-art deep-learning-based methods generally have a large amount of model parameters, which makes large-scale clinical deployment a time-consuming task. Moreover, the severity of DR is associated with lesions, and it is difficult for the model to focus on these regions. In this paper, we propose a novel deep-learning technique for grading DR with only image-level supervision. Specifically, we first customize the model with the help of self-knowledge distillation to achieve a trade-off between model performance and time complexity. Secondly, CAM-Attention is used to allow the network to focus on discriminative zone, e.g., microaneurysms, soft/hard exudates, etc.. Considering that directly attaching a classifier after the Side branch will disrupt the hierarchical nature of convolutional neural networks, a Mimicking Module is employed that allows the Side branch to actively mimic the main branch structure. Extensive experiments are conducted on two benchmark datasets, with an AUC of 0.965 and an accuracy of 92.9% for the Messidor dataset and 67.96% accuracy achieved for the challenging IDRID dataset, which demonstrates the superior performance of our proposed method. Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease has not only become a pandemic but also an overwhelming strain on the healthcare industry. The conventional diagnostic methods include Antigen Rapid Kits and Reverse Transcription–Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) tests. However, they entail several drawbacks such as low precision in diagnosis, increased time in obtaining test results, increased human–patient interaction, and high inaccuracy in the diagnosis of asymptomatic individuals, thus posing a significant challenge in today's medical practice in curbing an extremely infectious disease such as COVID-19. To overcome these shortcomings, a machine learning (ML) approach was proposed to aid clinicians in more accurate and precise infection diagnoses. A Convolutional Neural Network was built using a sample size of 1920 chest X-rays (CXR) of healthy individuals and COVID-19-infected patients. The developed CNN's performance was further cross-checked using the clinical results of the validation dataset comprising 300 CXRs. By converting the final output to binary, an intuitive classification of whether a specific CXR is of a healthy or a COVID-infected patient was accomplished. The statistical analysis of the CNN was: Accuracy: 95%; Precision: 96%; Specificity: 95%; Recall: 95%, and F1 score: 95%, thus, proving it to be a promising diagnostic tool in comparison to the other existing ML-based models. The datasets were obtained from Kaggle, GitHub, and European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research repositories. The prospects of the proposed CNN lie in its flexibility to be altered and extrapolated in diagnosing other lung infections, such as pneumonia and bacterial infections, with relevant training algorithms and inputs. Epilepsy is a common neurological condition. The effects of epilepsy are not restricted to seizures alone. They comprise a wide spectrum of problems that might impair and reduce quality of life. Even with medication, 30% of epilepsy patients still have recurring seizures. An epileptic seizure is caused by significant neuronal electrical activity, which affects brain activity. EEG shows these changes as high-amplitude spiky and sluggish waves. Recognizing seizures on an electroencephalogram (EEG) manually by a professional neurologist is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process, hence an efficient automated approach is necessary for the identification of epileptic seizure. One technique to increase the speed and accuracy with which a diagnosis of epileptic seizures could be made is by utilizing computer-aided diagnosis systems that are built on deep neural networks, or DNN. This study introduces a fusion of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and bi-directional long short-term memories (BiLSTMs) for automatic epileptic seizure identification via EEG signal processing in order to tackle the aforementioned informational challenges. An electroencephalogram's (EEG) raw data were first normalized after undergoing pre-processing. A RNN model was fed the normalized EEG sequence data and trained to accurately extract features from the data. Afterwards, the features were passed to the BiLSTM layers for processing so that further temporal information could be retrieved. In addition, the proposed RNN-BiLSTM model was tested in an experimental setting using the freely accessible UCI epileptic seizure dataset. Experimental findings of the suggested model have achieved avg values of 98.90%, 98.50%, 98. 20%, and 98.60%, respectively, for accuracy, sensitivity, precision, and specificity. To further verify the new model's efficacy, it is compared to other models, such as the RNN-LSTM and the RNN-GRU learning models, and is shown to have improved the same metrics by 1.8%, 1.69%, 1.95%, and 2.2% on using 5-fold. A technique of thermographic fault diagnosis of the shaft of a BLDC (Brushless Direct Current Electric) motor is presented in this article. The technique works for the shivering of the thermal imaging camera in the range of 0–1.5 [m/s2]. An electric shaver was used as the source of the BLDC motor. The following states of the BLDC motor were analyzed: Healthy BLDC motor (HB), BLDC motor with one faulty shaft (1FSB), BLDC motor with two faulty shafts (2FSB), and BLDC motor with three faulty shafts (3FSB). A new method of feature extraction named PNID (power of normalized image difference) was presented. Deep neural networks were used for the analysis of thermal images of the faulty shaft of the BLDC motor: GoogLeNet, ResNet50, and EfficientNet-b0. The results of the proposed technique were very good. PNID, GoogLeNet, ResNet50, and EfficientNet-b0 have an efficiency of recognition equal to 100% for four classes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Medical image fusion techniques can fuse medical images from different morphologies to make the medical diagnosis more reliable and accurate, which play an increasingly important role in many clinical applications. To obtain a fused image with high visual quality and clear structure details, this paper proposes a convolutional neural network (CNN) based medical image fusion algorithm. The proposed algorithm uses the trained Siamese convolutional network to fuse the pixel activity information of source images to realize the generation of weight map. Meanwhile, a contrast pyramid is implemented to decompose the source image. According to different spatial frequency bands and a weighted fusion operator, source images are integrated. The results of comparative experiments show that the proposed fusion algorithm can effectively preserve the detailed structure information of source images and achieve good human visual effects. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world. It is also associated with a high mortality index. Diabetic foot is one of its main complications, and it comprises the development of plantar ulcers that could result in an amputation. Several works report that thermography is useful to detect changes in the plantar temperature, which could give rise to a higher risk of ulceration. However, the plantar temperature distribution does not follow a particular pattern in diabetic patients, thereby making it difficult to measure the changes. Thus, there is an interest in improving the success of the analysis and classification methods that help to detect abnormal changes in the plantar temperature. All this leads to the use of computer-aided systems, such as those involved in artificial intelligence (AI), which operate with highly complex data structures. This paper compares machine learning-based techniques with Deep Learning (DL) structures. We tested common structures in the mode of transfer learning, including AlexNet and GoogleNet. Moreover, we designed a new DL-structure, which is trained from scratch and is able to reach higher values in terms of accuracy and other quality measures. The main goal of this work is to analyze the use of AI and DL for the classification of diabetic foot thermograms, highlighting their advantages and limitations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first proposal of DL networks applied to the classification of diabetic foot thermograms. The experiments are conducted over thermograms of DM and control groups. After that, a multi-level classification is performed based on a previously reported thermal change index. Intracranial hemorrhaging is considered a type of disease that affects the brain and is very dangerous, with high-mortality cases if there is no rapid diagnosis and prompt treatment. CT images are one of the most important methods of diagnosing intracranial hemorrhages. CT images contain huge amounts of information, requiring a lot of experience and taking a long time for proper analysis and diagnosis. Thus, artificial intelligence techniques provide an automatic mechanism for evaluating CT images to make a diagnosis with high accuracy and help radiologists make their diagnostic decisions. In this study, CT images for rapid detection of intracranial hemorrhages are diagnosed by three proposed systems with various methodologies and materials, where each system contains more than one network. The first system is proposed by three pretrained deep learning models, which are GoogLeNet, ResNet-50 and AlexNet. The second proposed system using a hybrid technology consists of two parts: the first part is the GoogLeNet, ResNet-50 and AlexNet models for extracting feature maps, while the second part is the SVM algorithm for classifying feature maps. The third proposed system uses artificial neural networks (ANNs) based on the features of the GoogLeNet, ResNet-50 and AlexNet models, whose dimensions are reduced by a principal component analysis (PCA) algorithm, and then the low-dimensional features are combined with the features of the GLCM and LBP algorithms. All the proposed systems achieved promising results in the diagnosis of CT images for the rapid detection of intracranial hemorrhages. The ANN network based on fusion of the deep feature of AlexNet with the features of GLCM and LBP reached an accuracy of 99.3%, precision of 99.36%, sensitivity of 99.5%, specificity of 99.57% and AUC of 99.84%. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor impairment, as well as tremors, stiffness, and rigidity. Besides the typical motor symptomatology, some Parkinsonians experience non-motor symptoms such as hyposmia, constipation, urinary dysfunction, orthostatic hypotension, memory loss, depression, pain, and sleep disturbances. The correct diagnosis of PD cannot be easy since there is no standard objective approach to it. After the incorporation of machine learning (ML) algorithms in medical diagnoses, the accuracy of disease predictions has improved. In this work, we have used three deep-learning-type cascaded neural network models based on the audial voice features of PD patients, called Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), Multilayer Perception (MLP), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), to estimate the accuracy of PD diagnosis. A performance comparison between the three models was performed on a sample of the subjects' voice biomarkers. Experimental outcomes suggested that the LSTM model outperforms others with 99% accuracy.
