Since 2002, China has launched four Haiyang-1 (HY-1) satellites equipped with the Chinese Ocean Color and Temperature Scanner (COCTS), which can observe the sea surface temperature (SST). The planned new generation ocean color observation satellites also carry a sensor for observing the SST represented by the payload in this paper. We analyze the spectral brightness temperature (BT) difference between the payload and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard Terra for the thermal infrared channels (11 and 12 µm) based on atmospheric radiative transfer simulation. The bias and standard deviation (SD) of spectral BT difference for the 11 µm channel are −0.12 K and 0.15 K, respectively, and those for the 12 µm channel are −0.10 K and 0.03 K, respectively. When the total column water vapor (TCWV) decreases from the oceans near the equator to high-latitude oceans, the spectral BT difference of the 11 µm channel varies from a positive deviation to a negative deviation, and that of the 12 µm channel basically remains stable. By correcting the MODIS BT observation using the spectral BT differences, we produce the simulated BT data for the thermal infrared channels of the payload, and then validate it using the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) carried on METOP-B. The validation results show that the bias of BT difference between the payload and IASI is −0.22 K for the 11 µm channel, while it is −0.05 K for the 12 µm channel. The SD of both channels is 0.13 K. In this study, we provide the simulated BT dataset for the 11 and 12 µm channels of a payload for the retrieval of SST. Drought poses a serious threat to agricultural production and food security in the context of global climate change. Few studies have explored the response mechanism and lag time of agricultural drought to meteorological drought from the perspective of cultivated land types. This paper analyzes the spatiotemporal evolution patterns and hysteresis relationship of meteorological and agricultural droughts in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China. Here, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) vegetation index products and surface temperature products were selected to calculate the Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI) from 2010 to 2015. Furthermore, we obtained the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) for the same period. Based on these indices, we analyzed the correlation and the hysteresis relationship between agricultural and meteorological drought in rainfed and irrigated arable land. The results showed that, (1) compared with SPEI, the high spatial resolution PDSI data were deemed more suitable for the subsequent accurate and scientific analysis of the relationship between meteorological and agricultural droughts. (2) When meteorological drought occurs, irrigated arable land is the first to experience agricultural drought, and then alleviates when the drought is most severe in rainfed arable land, indicating that irrigated arable land is more sensitive to drought events when exposed to the same degree of drought risk. However, rainfed arable land is actually more susceptible to agricultural drought due to the intervention of irrigation measures. (3) According to the cross-wavelet transform analysis, agricultural droughts significantly lag behind meteorological droughts by about 33 days during the development process of drought events. (4) The spatial distribution of the correlation coefficient between the PDSI and TVDI shows that the area with negative correlations of rainfed croplands and the area with positive correlations of irrigated croplands account for 77.55% and 68.04% of cropland areas, respectively. This study clarifies and distinguishes the details of the meteorological-to-agricultural drought relationship in rainfed and irrigated arable land, noting that an accurate lag time can provide useful guidance for drought monitoring management and irrigation project planning in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, the main goal of the Special Issue on "Remote sensing for water resources and environmental management" was to solicit papers from a diverse range of scientists around the world on the use of cutting-edge remote sensing technologies to assess and monitor freshwater quality, quantity, availability, and management to ensure water security. Special consideration was given to scientific manuscripts that covered, but were not limited to, the development of geospatial techniques and remote sensing applications for detecting, quantifying, and monitoring freshwater water resources, identifying potential threats to water resources and agriculture, as well as other themes related to water resources and environmental management at various spatial scales. The Special Issue attracted over thirteen peer-reviewed scientific articles, with the majority of manuscripts originating from China. Most of the studies made use of satellite datasets, ranging from coarse spatial resolution data, such as the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE Follow-On (GRACE-FO), to medium spatial resolution data, such as the Landsat series, ERA5, Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Application Land version 2 reanalysis product (MERRA2), CLSM and NOAH ET, and MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer). Google Earth Engine (GEE) data, together with big data processing techniques, such as the remote sensing-based energy balance model (ALEXI/DisALEXI approach) and the STARFM data fusion technique, were used for analyzing geospatial datasets. Overall, this Special Issue demonstrated significant knowledge gaps in various big data image processing techniques and improved computing processes in assessing and monitoring water resources and the environment at various spatial and temporal scales. Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) is one of the most important parameters of aerosol and a key physical quantity to characterize atmospheric turbidity and air pollution. Accurate retrieval of AOD is of great significance for air quality assessment. However, the spatial resolution of the currently widely used Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) AOD products is too low to meet the application research of atmospheric environment at the regional scale. In 2013, China launched the Gaofen-1 (GF-1) satellite, which provides a new idea for AOD retrieval. In this paper, we apply the synergetic use of TERRA and AQUA satellite MODIS data to calculate the high-resolution AOD over Beijing based on the Synergetic Retrieval of Aerosol Properties algorithm (SRAP) and discussed scale conversion problems between AODs with different resolutions. To obtain the 100 m MODIS data, we use GF-1 wide-field-of-view data to downscale 1 km MODIS data based on mutual information method. The retrieved AOD has a spatial resolution of 100 m and can cover many land surface types. Preliminary validation was carried out with the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) ground observation data. The correlation coefficient is about 0.88, and the root-mean-square error is about 0.15. Due to the high resolution of retrieved results, more detailed features can be provided in the spatial distribution. With the economic growth and increasing urbanization in the last three decades, the air quality over China has continuously degraded, which poses a great threat to human health. The concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) directly affects the mortality of people living in the polluted areas where air quality is poor. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, one of the well organized urban regions in northern China, has suffered with poor air quality and atmospheric pollution due to recent growth of the industrial sector and vehicle emissions. In the present study, we used the back propagation neural network model approach to estimate the spatial distribution of PM2.5 concentration in the BTH region for the period January 2014-December 2016, combining the satellite-derived aerosol optical depth (S-DAOD) and meteorological data. The results were validated using the ground PM2.5 data. The general method including all PM2.5 training data and 10-fold cross-method have been used for validation for PM2.5 estimation (R2 = 0.68, RMSE = 20.99 for general validation; R2 = 0.54, RMSE = 24.13 for cross-method validation). The study provides a new approach to monitoring the distribution of PM2.5 concentration. Lake level variation is an important hydrological indicator of water balance, biodiversity and climate change in drainage basins. This paper illustrates the use of moderate-resolution imaging spectroadiometer (MODIS) data to characterize complex water level variation in Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China. MODIS data were used in conjunction with in situ topographic data, otherwise known as the land-water contact method, to investigate the potential of this hybrid water level spatiotemporal variability measurement technique. An error analysis was conducted to assess the derived water level relative to gauge data. Validation results demonstrated that the land-water contact method can satisfactorily capture spatial patterns and seasonal variations in water level fluctuations. The correlation coefficient ranged from 0.684 to 0.835, the root-mean-square-error from 0.79 m-1.09 m, and the mean absolute bias error from 0.65 m to 0.86 m for five main gauge stations surrounding the lake. Additionally, seasonal and interannual variations in the lake's water level were revealed in the MODIS-based results. These results indicate that the land-water contact method has the potential to be applied in mapping water level changes in Poyang Lake. This study not only provides a foundation for basic hydrological and ecological studies, but is also valuable for the conservation and management of water resources over gauge-sparse regions in Poyang Lake. Stable night-time light data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Line-scan System (OLS) provide a unique proxy for anthropogenic development. This paper presents a regional urban extent extraction method using a one-class classifier and combinations of DMSP/OLS stable night-time light (NTL) data, MODIS normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data, and land surface temperature (LST) data. We first analyzed how well MODIS NDVI and LST data quantify the properties of urban areas. Considering that urban area is the only class of interest, we applied the one-class support vector machine (OCSVM) to classify different combinations of the three datasets. We evaluated the effectiveness of the proposed method and compared with the locally optimized threshold method in regional urban extent mapping in China. The experimental results demonstrate that DMSP/OLS NTL data, MODIS NDVI and LST data provide different but complementary information sources to quantify the urban extent at a regional scale. The results also indicate that the OCSVM classification of the combination of all three datasets generally outperformed the locally optimized threshold method. Dongting Lake, the second largest freshwater lake in China, is well known for its rapid seasonal fluctuations in inundation extents in the middle reach of the Yangtze River, and it is also the lake most affected by the Three Gorges Project. Significant inter-annual and seasonal variations in flood inundations were observed from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) time-series imagery between 2000 and 2012 in the Dongting Lake. Results demonstrated that temporal changes in inundation extents derived from MODIS data were accordant with variations in annual and monthly precipitation and runoff data. Spatial and temporal dynamics of some related parameters of flood regime were analyzed as well, which included flood inundation probability, duration and start/end date of the annual largest flood. Large areas with high flood inundation probability were identified in 2000 and 2002, but relatively small regions with great flood inundation probability occurred in 2001, 2006, and 2011. Long flood durations were observed in 2000, 2002, 2008, 2010, and 2012, whereas short flood durations occurred in 2001, 2006, and 2011. Correlation analysis techniques were applied to explore spatial-temporal relationships between parameters associated with flood regime and wetland landscape patterns from 2000 to 2012. In addition, this paper presented comprehensive discussions on development of related parameters of flood regime and their influences on wetland landscape pattern after impoundment of the Three Gorges Reservoir, changes in wetland landscape patterns after the flood period, and the role of flooding in wetland evolution and vegetation succession. These results can provide scientific guidance and baseline data for wetland management and long-term monitoring of wetland ecological environment in the Dongting Lake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large areas of the Tibetan plateau are only covered by a sparse network of ground snow sampling stations, while the snow cover is highly heterogeneously distributed due to wind, topography etc. Nevertheless, the snow accumulation and spatial patterns play an important role in the hydrological cycle. It releases moisture during the dry spring period before the onset of the monsoon season. Widely used MODIS snow cover products have been available globally since 2002. The understanding of the temporal and spatial distribution of snow cover in a given region calls for a comprehensive data representation method. In this paper a method to visualize both spatial and temporal aspects of snow cover distribution from MODIS 8-day composite data is presented. It is based on RGB display of the snow cover data which is grouped according to season. The RGB syntheses of snow cover distribution (RSD) were generated for the Nam Co Basin in the central part of the Tibetan Plateau during the years of 2002-2009. An alternating pattern of monsoon and autumn snow cover was identified in the western part of the basin which corresponds to the biennial character of the variations of the Indian monsoon. Monsoon snow cover was found in RSD images for the years 2002, 2004 and 2008 whereas in years 2003 and 2009 the autumn snow cover is dominant. The eastern part of the basin does not follow this general pattern since it is affected by the so called ?lake effect?, which is a snow fall induced by the passing of dry and cold westerlies over the lake surface during the winter months. The years 2002, 2006 and 2007 were identified as years with a particularly strong lake effect from the RSD images. Areas with permanent snow cover and areas that were snow free were both found to be relatively stable. Comparison of the lake effect at Nam Co with nearby Siling Co, where the lake effect is smaller or absent, suggests that the presence of an effective barrier on the opposite side of the lake is a prerequisite for the occurrence of the strong lake effect. Open burning is often used to remove crop residue during the harvest season. Despite a series of regulations by the Chinese government, the open burning of crop residue still frequently occurs in China, and the monitoring and forecasting crop fires have become a topic of active research. In this paper, crop fires in Northeastern China were forecasted using an artificial neural network (ANN) based on moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite fire data from 2013–2020. Both natural factors (meteorological, soil moisture content, harvest date) and anthropogenic factors were considered. The model's forecasting accuracy under natural factors reached 77.01% during 2013–2017. When considering the influence of anthropogenic management and control policies, such as the straw open burning prohibition areas in Jilin Province, the accuracy of the forecast results for 2020 was reduced to 60%. Although the forecasting accuracy was lower than for natural factors, the relative error between the observed fire points and the back propagation neural network (BPNN) forecasting results was acceptable. In terms of influencing factors, air pressure, the change in soil moisture content in a 24 h period and the daily soil moisture content were significantly correlated with open burning. The results of this study improve our ability to forecast agricultural fires and provide a scientific framework for regional prevention and control of crop residue burning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent decades, the vegetation of the Sanjiangyuan region has undergone a series of changes under the influence of climate change, and ecological restoration projects have been implemented. In this paper, we analyze the spatiotemporal dynamics of vegetation in this region using the satellite-retrieved normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from the global inventory modeling and mapping studies (GIMMS) and moderate resolution imaging and spectroradiometer (MODIS) datasets during the past 34 years. Specifically, the characteristics of vegetation changes were analyzed according to the stage of implementation of different ecological engineering programs. The results are as follows. (1) The vegetation in 65.6% of the study area exhibited an upward trend, and in 53.0% of the area, it displayed a large increase, which was mainly distributed in the eastern part of the study area. (2) The vegetation NDVI increased to differing degrees during stages of ecological engineering. (3) The NDVI in the western part of the Sanjiangyuan region is mainly affected by temperature, while in the northeastern part, the NDVI is affected more by precipitation. In the southern part, however, vegetation growth is affected neither by temperature nor by precipitation. On the whole region, vegetation growing is more affected by temperature than by precipitation. (4) The impacts of human activities on vegetation change are both positive and negative. In recent years, ecological engineering projects have had a positive impact on vegetation growth. This study can help us to correctly understand the impact of climate change on vegetation growth, so as to provide a scientific basis for the evaluation of regional ecological engineering effectiveness and the formulation of ecological protection policies. Lakes have been identified as an important indicator of climate change and a finer lake area can better reflect the changes. In this paper, we propose an effective unsupervised deep gradient network (UDGN) to generate a higher resolution lake area from remote sensing images. By exploiting the power of deep learning, UDGN models the internal recurrence of information inside the single image and its corresponding gradient map to generate images with higher spatial resolution. The gradient map is derived from the input image to provide important geographical information. Since the training samples are only extracted from the input image, UDGN can adapt to different settings per image. Based on the superior adaptability of the UDGN model, two strategies are proposed for super-resolution (SR) mapping of lakes from multispectral remote sensing images. Finally, Landsat 8 and MODIS (moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer) images from two study areas on the Tibetan Plateau in China were used to evaluate the performance of UDGN. Compared with four unsupervised SR methods, UDGN obtained the best SR results as well as lake extraction results in terms of both quantitative and visual aspects. The experiments prove that our approach provides a promising way to break through the limitations of median-low resolution remote sensing images in lake change monitoring, and ultimately support finer lake applications. Horizontal visibility (HVIS) is a primary index used for assessing air quality. Although satellite images provide information regarding atmospheric aerosols, atmospheric visibility is not directly measured. In this paper, a deep learning approach is proposed to retrieve HVIS using moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol optical depth (AOD) data, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts reanalysis dataset, and ground-based visibility observations. The deep neural network model comprises a multi-layer unsupervised restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) and a layer for supervised learning. The dropout mechanism was used in the training process to overcome the errors caused by over-fitting. The results demonstrate that the correlation coefficient values between HVIS observations and retrievals during training, pre-validating, and evaluation were 0.74, 0.723, and 0.697, respectively. The retrieved HVIS in Eastern China exhibited a north-to-south increasing trend, increasing and decreasing in summer and winter, respectively. In conclusion, the proposed model presents an effective and more reliable method for HVIS retrieval. However, the small samples, low AOD, low albedo, high total column water, high longitude, and the low vertical wind component at 10 m likely cause HVIS bias. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
