While the risk of fires in informal settlements has received attention in the literature, as has the longer-term community response to the resulting destruction, there is limited knowledge of how communities in informal settlements respond during fire disasters. This paper examines the role of community actors in fire response, using a case study of a group of informal settlements collectively called Mukuru Fuata Nyayo in Nairobi, Kenya. In earlier years, residents simply stayed put and watched properties get destroyed, and then waited for landlords to rebuild the houses. There is an emerging change in community fire response in these settlements, from a hands-off to a more hands-on approach in fire response. The paper examines the factors contributing to the change and draws conclusions about the strategies needed to build resilience in community fire response in informal settlements. The longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) and related ecosystem is an icon of the southeastern United States (US). Once covering an estimated 37 million ha from Texas to Florida to Virginia, the near-extirpation of, and subsequent restoration efforts for, the species has been well-documented over the past ca. 100 years. Although longleaf pine is one of the longest-lived tree species in the southeastern US—with documented ages of over 400 years—its use has not been reviewed in the field of dendrochronology. In this paper, we review the utility of longleaf pine tree-ring data within the applications of four primary, topical research areas: climatology and paleoclimate reconstruction, fire history, ecology, and archeology/cultural studies. Further, we highlight knowledge gaps in these topical areas, for which we introduce the Longleaf Tree-Ring Network (LTRN). The overarching purpose of the LTRN is to coalesce partners and data to expand the scientific use of longleaf pine tree-ring data across the southeastern US. As a first example of LTRN analytics, we show that the development of seasonwood chronologies (earlywood width, latewood width, and total width) enhances the utility of longleaf pine tree-ring data, indicating the value of these seasonwood metrics for future studies. We find that at 21 sites distributed across the species' range, latewood width chronologies outperform both their earlywood and total width counterparts in mean correlation coefficient (RBAR = 0.55, 0.46, 0.52, respectively). Strategic plans for increasing the utility of longleaf pine dendrochronology in the southeastern US include [1] saving remnant material (e.g., stumps, logs, and building construction timbers) from decay, extraction, and fire consumption to help extend tree-ring records, and [2] developing new chronologies in LTRN spatial gaps to facilitate broad-scale analyses of longleaf pine ecosystems within the context of the topical groups presented. Cabo Verde remained uninhabited until 1460 CE, when European sailors founded a settlement in Santiago, and soon after in Fogo island. The degree to which different island ecosystems in Cabo Verde have been transformed by humans remains uncertain because of a scarcity of historical information and archaeological evidence. Disentangling these processes from natural ones is complicated in islands with a history of volcanic impacts and other natural hazards. In this paper, we apply microfossil (pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs and phytoliths) and sedimentological analyses (granulometry, X-ray diffraction, loss on ignition and tephrostratigraphy) to a 2-m sediment sequence deposited in a scoria cone from 4100 cal year BP (calibrated years before 1950 CE) to the present. The organic-rich basal sediments indicate that between 4100 and 2600 cal year BP the pre-settlement landscape of Fogo was an open grassland, where fire was infrequent and/or small-scale. An increase in volcanic glass deposition after 2600 cal year BP, peaking ca. 1200 cal year BP, suggests that there was a progressive activation of Fogo's volcanic activity, contemporaneous with increased fire frequency and erosion pulses, but with little impact on local grassland vegetation. While dating uncertainty is high, the first evidence of intensive local land use by early settlers was in the form of cultivation of Zea mays, abundant spores of coprophilous fungi (i.e. Sporormiella), and peaks in charcoal concentrations between 800 and 400 cal year BP. This was followed by large increases in pollen from pigeon pea (Cajanus), a diverse array of exotic trees (Cupressus, Grevillea), and invasive shrubs (Lantana). The introduction of these taxa is part of recent human effort to 'tame' this steep, dry and hazardous island by reducing erosion and providing firewood. On 18 November 1996, a fire on Heavy Goods Vehicle shuttle No. ‘7539’, travelling from France to England, forced the train to stop at about 19 km from the French entrance. This paper presents the results of an analysis of the accident. The analysis covers the incident train’s journey from the French terminal until it stopped in-tunnel only. The approach has been to use a tunnel fire safety management system model as a ‘template’ for comparison with the ‘system’ at the time of the tunnel fire. Some findings have been highlighted. This paper describes how the residents of Accra’s largest informal settlement, Old Fadama, responded to a disastrous fire on 21 May 2012. Although they received no official support for reconstruction, they organized to rebuild using permanent materials, which reduced fire risks and also demonstrated to city authorities their capacities. This paper discusses the characterization and modeling of thermoplastic and thermosetting matrix composites under load in fire. Small-scale tests were found to provide a cost-effective means of characterizing load-bearing behavior of composites in fire and a useful framework for materials development. This paper demonstrates the modeling of thermal and decomposition behavior during the test and the extension of this modeling to include mechanical response and failure behavior. The work necessitated measurement of strength and stiffness over a wide temperature range, with interesting results up to the point of resin decomposition. The approach was applied to three 12 mm thick glass reinforced systems: vinyl ester, polyester, and polypropylene. The laminates were subjected to a one-sided 50 kW·m−2 heat flux, using a propane burner. Thermal behavior was modeled using a simplified version of the Henderson equation to predict the evolution of temperature and residual resin content through the thickness. Shared fire-survival and fi re-persistence traits are found in taxonomically unrelated plant species that commonly grow in fi re-prone ecosystems. Such traits include resprouting, after fi re has killed the above-ground biomass, and postfire seed release after the death of individual plants. Classification of such traits has led to a change in focus from research on the impact of fi re as a disturbance factor on individual species, towards research into plant functional types associated with fi re. This has led to a better understanding of the timing and geographic evolution of such traits as either fi re-adapted or as a selective response to other disturbance factors. The identification of fi re-survival and fi re-persistence traits in fi re-prone ecosystems is the first focus of this paper. It is followed by a discussion of recent research which offers a critical reappraisal of patch mosaic burning as a means to increase landscape heterogeneity and biodiversity, including the role played by plant functional types in determining diversity. The fi re-prone ecosystems of mediterranean type shrublands and heathlands, savannas and grasslands, and boreal and other coniferous forests are the main geographic focus of the paper. FIERAsystem is a computer model for evaluating fire protection systems in industrial buildings. The model has been developed as a tool to assist fire protection engineers, building officials, fire service personnel and researchers in performing fire safety engineering calculations, and can be used to conduct hazard and risk analyses, as well as to evaluate whether a selected design satisfies established fire safety objectives. While the model is primarily designed for use in warehouses and aircraft hangars, it can be modified for application to other industrial buildings. This paper describes the framework for FIERAsystem, along with its capabilities and flexibility. Individual models used to perform calculations are discussed, particularly those that calculate fire development and life hazard. A hazard analysis of an aircraft hangar is then described in detail, as an example of the types of calculations this model can perform. Fire protection of building structural systems traditionally has relied on component qualification testing, with acceptance criteria based on component survival during a "standard" fire for a prescribed rating period. These test procedures do not address the impact of the fire on a structural system. With advances in fire science and the advent of advanced structural analysis, the routine use of the computer as a design tool and limit states design, it is becoming possible to consider realistic fire scenarios and effects explicitly as part of the structural design process. In this modern engineering design approach, load requirements for considering structural actions due to fire in combination with other loads are essential, but have yet to be implemented in standards and codes in the United States. This paper provides a probabilistic basis for appropriate combinations of loads to facilitate fire-resistant structural design and recommends specific load combinations for this purpose. The probabilistic basis is essential for measuring compliance with performance objectives, for comparing alternatives, and for making the role of uncertainty in the decision process transparent. Fire has a long history in Australia and is a key driver of vegetation dynamics in the tropical savanna ecosystems that cover one quarter of the country. Fire reconstructions are required to understand ecosystem dynamics over the long term but these data are lacking for the extensive savannas of northern Australia. This paper presents a multiproxy palaeofire record for Marura sinkhole in eastern Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. The record is constructed by combining optical methods (counts and morphology of macroscopic and microscopic charcoal particles) and chemical methods (quantification of abundance and stable isotope composition of pyrogenic carbon by hydrogen pyrolysis). This novel combination of measurements enables the generation of a record of relative fire intensity to investigate the interplay between natural and anthropogenic influences. The Marura palaeofire record comprises three main phases: 4600–2800 cal BP, 2800–900 cal BP and 900 cal BP to present. Highest fire incidence occurs at ~4600–4000 cal BP, coinciding with regional records of high effective precipitation, and all fire proxies decline from that time to the present. 2800–900 cal BP is characterised by variable fire intensities and aligns with archaeological evidence of occupation at nearby Blue Mud Bay. All fire proxies decline significantly after 900 cal BP. The combination of charcoal and pyrogenic carbon measures is a promising proxy for relative fire intensity in sedimentary records and a useful tool for investigating potential anthropogenic fire regimes. Mesic tree species such as Fagus grandifolia and Tsuga canadensis experienced multiple abundance declines in eastern North America during the last 8000 years, but the causes remain unclear. This paper presents a new sub-centennial record of Holocene vegetation, fire and sedimentological changes at Spicer Lake, IN, to test hypotheses about the role of fire and hydrological variations on shifts in vegetation composition. Four pollen zones are reported: Abies–Picea forests (15–11.8 ka BP), Pinus-dominated mixed forest (11.8–10.6 ka BP), transitional mixed forest (10.6–6.8 ka BP), and deciduous forest characterized by the expansion and high variability of F. grandifolia (after 6.8 ka BP). Macroscopic charcoal indicates five to seven fires between 6.1 and 4.4 ka BP and no fires between 4.4 and 2 ka BP, despite several large declines in F. grandifolia, and more fires after 1.8 ka BP likely linked to declining F. grandifolia abundances after 1.1 ka BP. Six peaks in mineralogenic sediments are suggestive of hydroclimate variability, but do not consistently correspond to shifts in F. grandifolia abundances. A Bayesian change-point analysis of 15 regional F. grandifolia pollen records identifies peak probabilities of events at 4.8 and 1.1 ka BP, similar in timing to variations in T. canadensis at other sites. Hence, fire can be ruled out as a driver of the mid-Holocene declines of F. grandifolia, but more work is needed to confidently establish the regional timing of F. grandifolia declines and to link them to past droughts and T. canadensis declines in eastern North America. When is the baseline for Anthropocene? The first indications of human impact on earth closely relate to early human behavior and use of resources. First agricultural societies modified the landscape with the aim of generating their own resources to satisfy the needs of an increasing population. This new system was the result of years of learning and continuous interaction with landscape. Hunter-gatherer societies had shown a vast knowledge of their surrounding environment, which allowed them to exploit and optimize the available resources. But, had these societies the capacity to modify the landscape in such a way that can be traced up until today? How far back in time can we go to find the first evidence of human impact on earth? In this paper, we will try to analyze early human behavior and the possible impact of their activities on the landscape. We will use the paleoanthropological site of Olduvai Gorge (northern Tanzania) as a case study to suggest that the baseline for Anthropocene, taking the term as human impact on earth through cognitive-behavioral strategies, can be moved back to the time when early hominins visited Olduvai. Olduvai Gorge is perfectly suited for this study since the latest scientific research and publications have yielded a detailed knowledge of the vegetation, the landscape, and of the wildlife that lived in the area. Macroscopic charcoal analysis of lake sediment stratigraphies is a widely used approach to reconstruct past biomass burning patterns of ecosystems. The development of fire records often relies on a single quantification method of charcoal in a sediment subsample; however, recent studies have shown that additional paleoecological information can be obtained by classifying charcoal morphologies. The morphologies and diagnostic features of charcoal yields information about fuel sources, fire type, and charcoal taphonomy, and can aid in calibrating sediment records to known historical fires. This additional information enhances paleoecological inferences by providing more paleoenvironmental information than studies of total charcoal as the only metric. Here we present a classification of 27 macroscopic charcoal morphologies observed in Holocene sediments of lakes located in the mixed-conifer forests of southeastern British Columbia, Canada. This classification system builds on other morphological classifications that have been previously utilized, but is more inclusive of the morphological variability observed and is flexible to modification for use when applied to other study settings. The morphological classification presented here was developed following the observation of >100,000 macroscopic charcoal fragments >150 µm. This paper focuses on the observed morphological classes, their identification, potential fuel sources, and the morphotype assemblage stratigraphy from one site as an example. The charcoal assemblages varied throughout the mid-to-late Holocene contemporaneously with known regional scale hydroclimatic changes in British Columbia. Major changes in fire frequency were also concomitant with morphotype assemblage changes. Future work focusing on linking fuel types with charcoal morphotypes, post-fire observations of charcoal taphonomy, and the analysis of multiple attribute charcoal data sets from a variety of ecosystems will improve our understanding of biomass burning and long-term fire ecology. Fire is a force that links everyday human activities to some of the most powerful energetic movements of the Earth. Drawing together the energy-centred social theory of Georges Bataille, the fire-centred environmental history of Stephen Pyne, and the work of a number of ‘pyrotechnology’ scholars, the paper proposes that the generalized study of combustion is a key to contextualizing human energetic practices within a broader ‘economy’ of terrestrial and cosmic energy flows. We examine the relatively recent turn towards fossil-fuelled ‘internal combustion’ in the light of a much longer human history of ‘broadcast’ burning of vegetation and of artisanal pyrotechnologies – the use of heat to transform diverse materials. A combustion-centred analysis, it is argued, brings human collective life into closer contact with the geochemical and geologic conditions of earthly existence, while also pointing to the significance of explorative, experimental and even playful dispositions towards energy and matter. Macroscopic charcoal records from wetland sediment cores are used to reconstruct long-term records of fire frequency. A central premise for the use of this tool is that macroscopic charcoal (>125 μm) represents local fires involving local vegetation. Several records reveal that there may often be exceptions to these guidelines. Previous studies have shown that particles larger than 1 cm long can travel at least 20 km from the location of a fire. We present observations of unprecedented long-distance transport of large (⩽5 cm long) charcoal particles at least 50 km from a fire west of Sydney, Australia. Factors that contribute to long-distance transport of large charcoal particles are fire intensity, upper level wind speed and landscape topography. The fires west of Sydney were large and intense, upper level (~10 km) winds exceeded 90 km h-1, and the topography east of the fire was flat or undulating. Smoke plumes from intense fires like this can reach an altitude of at least 15 km. Charcoal morphology also contributed to long-distance transport in this case. Eucalyptus trees can produce large quantities of aerodynamically efficient particles; from paper thin, smooth, decorticating bark and large sclerophyllous leaves. The presence of large macroscopic charcoal particles in wetland sediments does not automatically indicate local fires and could result from distant, large, intense fires. Large, intense fires can occur in Australia, the grasslands of Kazakhstan, Namibia, the Sahel and Patagonia. High intensity fires also occur in the forested areas of the western United States and Boreal North America. Fires in these regions could result in long-distance transport of large macroscopic charcoal particles under the right circumstances. Local charcoal flux studies are therefore critical for the interpretation of macroscopic charcoal records. Originally associated to arid regions, vulnerability to land degradation (LD) has rapidly spread in temperate areas, such as the Mediterranean basin. In this region LD increased in the last years due to worsening climate conditions, land-cover changes, soil erosion and anthropogenic pressures. Increasing land vulnerability is mutually linked with an increasing risk of disturbance propagation: the spatio-temporal distribution of areas with different degrees of LD determines different dynamic patterns of the disturbance; in turn, LD is strongly affected by the disturbance occurrence regime, which alters the status quality of a given territory. These considerations invite a comparison between vulnerability to LD and fire occurrence, since historically, in the Mediterranean areas, fire represents one of the main disturbance sources, which is mostly human-induced and with a strong seasonality pattern. Under certain conditions, LD may create conducive conditions for fire to thrive that in turn if repeated may alter the quality status of a landscape, setting the interested area into a LD-fire feedback dynamic. The aim of this paper is to analyse the relationship between fire incidence and LD and their potential feedbacks in Sardinia during two reference periods, 1990 and 2000. Results indicated that in areas already affected by high LD vulnerability there is a sort of LD-fire spiralling connection that can be seen as a ‘mutual early-warning system’ with strong implications on fire prevention strategies and landscape quality status monitoring. Cliff-top dunes are a locally important geomorphic features of sedimentary coasts. They are traditionally interpreted as being sourced by (or with) sand derived from the beach below the cliff. This paper presents the results of a stratigraphic and geochronological study of Carlo Sand Blow, a coastal blowout that has developed on top of a high sandy cliff in the Cooloola Sand Mass, south-east Queensland. We use a combination of sedimentological, pedological and geophysical techniques along with optically stimulated luminescence dating to determine the depositional history and evolution of the blowout. We demonstrate that the blowout is dominantly nourished by sand eroded from its floor rather than the adjacent beach. The original dune surface dates to the first half of the last glacial period (c. 40–70 ka) and this dune was deflated in the late-Holocene. Dune activity is directly associated with cliff undercutting because of coastal retreat in the late-Holocene, but coastal erosion on its own is not capable of maintaining aeolian activity. Blowout activity occurred between 2.6 and 2.3 ka and again at 0.3 ka with aeolian sand burying palaeosols. Both soil surfaces contained charcoal and tree stumps in growth position and our study suggests that fire is the immediate trigger for blowout reactivation. It is likely that these fires were anthropogenic in origin, because the site is somewhat protected from natural fire and the ages coincide with intensification of human use of coastal sites in the area. We welcome the comments by Bjorn Robroek et al. (The Holocene 19 (2009) 1093-1094, this issue) on our paper (McClymont et al., The Holocene 18 (2008) 991-1002) and the opportunity to discuss further the complexities that surround the disappearance of Sphagnum imbricatum from Butterburn Flow (our study), and the implications for understanding the disappearance of this species in northwest Europe. We also wish to clarify our site of study; we presented data only from Butterburn Flow, northern England. Although we note that the disappearance of S. imbricatum here is part of a wider European decline in the late Holocene, we did not present data from Wales or Ireland as suggested in the opening paragraph of Robroek's comment. We also noted that the replacement of S. imbricatum by S. magellanicum occurred over c. 44 years, but proposed that it may have been longer owing to evidence for reduced peat accumulation across the transition. The mixed semi-evergreen forests in lowland central equatorial Africa can contain many elements of secondary vegetation. This raises the question of what factors have determined the current forest composition in this region. Is this forest in the process of succession after natural climatic variation and/or anthropogenic disturbances in the past, or is it a stable forest type? This paper presents a multiproxy palaeoecological analysis of a sedimentary sequence taken from a small sedimentary basin located in logged semi-evergreen lowland forest in northern Congo-Brazzaville which addresses these questions. Analyses undertaken included fossil pollen, geochemical and microscopic charcoal. Geochemical results were interpreted as a proxy for rainfall, and showed that northern Congo has experienced changes in rainfall during the past 2580 years, while microscopic charcoal concentrations indicated increased burning from approximately 1240 cal. yr BP to the present. Analysis of the fossil pollen assemblages showed that although light-demanding taxa were a major constituent of this forest throughout the sequence, shade-tolerant taxa were more abundant in the forest prior to 1345 cal. yr BP. Increases in aridity and/or droughts after 1345 cal. yr BP, and an increase in fire after 1240 cal. yr BP resulted in a semievergreen forest with abundant pioneers that persisted with minor changes in composition during the last 900 years, even during a period of increased rainfall from 400 to 100 cal. yr BP. This paper interprets macroscopic charcoal (>250 μm), humification and loss-on-ignition over the last ∼14 200 cal. BP from Goochs Swamp, located to the west of Sydney in the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. This study aimed to investigate relationships between humans, climate and fire through time, primarily by comparison of these palaeoenvironmental indices with archaeological evidence from the region. Climatic forcing can explain all periods of change in the history of fire at Goochs Swamp: fire activity was variable during the Lateglacial-Holocene transition, low during the relatively stable climate of the early Holocene, and high but variable after the onset of modern El Niño from the mid Holocene. Although the dominant control on fire in this environment during the Holocene appears to be climate, fluctuations in the late Holocene may reflect anthropogenic fire or human responses to climate change. The archaeological record of the Blue Mountains and other parts of the Sydney Basin illustrates that Aboriginal people altered subsistence, resource and land-use patterns in the late Holocene. We propose that these cultural measures were adopted to overcome new risks as the frequency of ENSO events increased, and the natural fire regime and resource reliability changed. These strategies perhaps included a more systematic use of fire. The most parsimonious interpretation of the evidence for changes in fire activity at Goochs Swamp in the light of nearby archaeological evidence is that Aboriginal people used fire within a changing climatic framework. Skin pain and burns at an elevated skin layer temperature due to incident heat flux could be used to evaluate thermal hazards for some enclosed fire environments and mathematical expressions were proposed in literature for fire safety evaluations. In this work, a mathematical model for determining the skin layer temperature due to incident radiant heat flux is examined with experimental verification. Heat balance on the skin layer due to the heat flux and conductive heat transfer through it is considered. Specifically, the skin layer temperature at the head portion of an artificial thermal manikin was measured at certain incident radiant heat flux and compared with that calculated from the mathematical model. The results showed that the predictions were slightly higher than the measured values and the mathematical model would be useful in hazard assessment for some fire environments involving exposure of humans to a thermal radiation. Practical application: This paper presents the temperature measurement at a depth of 0.1 mm under the skin of an artificial thermal manikin's head portion exposed to a vertical heated surface of 699 K in two orientations: facing and sideways to the surface. The result could be a useful source of information for the verification of any classical radiation model application to fire safety designs regarding heat exposure of the head portion of a person to heated surfaces. A mathematical model for determining the skin layer temperature due to incident radiant heat flux was examined. The study showed that the calculations reasonably estimated the skin layer temperature and thus would be useful in hazard assessment for some fire environments and building designs involving exposure of human objects to thermal radiation. Typical examples used in the study, where an evacuee would not experience any skin pain during evacuation, were: an escape corridor with a hot smoke layer in the upper part, and certain evacuation routes close to the hot surfaces. This paper reports on changes to the mechanical properties of woven glass laminates with polyester, vinyl ester and phenolic resins during fire exposure. Two sets of experiments were carried out. First, unstressed laminates were exposed to a constant one-sided heat flux (50 kWm-2) for various times, and the residual post-fire strength at room temperature was reported. In a second series of experiments, laminates were tested under load. The times corresponding to a given loss of properties were 2-3 times shorter than in the previous case. It was found in both cases that modes of loading involving compressive stress were more adversely affected by fire exposure than those involving tension. A simple 'two-layer' model is proposed, in which the laminate is assumed to comprise (i) an unaffected layer with virgin properties and (ii) a heat-affected layer with zero properties. For residual properties after fire, the 'effective' thickness of undamaged laminate was calculated using this model and compared with measured values. A thermal model was employed to predict the temperature and the residual resin profile through the laminate versus time. Comparing the model predictions with the measured values of effective laminate thickness enabled simple criteria to be developed for determining the position of the 'boundary' between heat-affected and undamaged material. For post-fire integrity of unloaded laminates, this boundary corresponds to a Residual Resin Content (RRC) of 80%, a criterion that applies to all the resin types tested. For polyester laminate under load in fire, the boundary in compressive loading (buckling failure) appears to correspond to the point where the resin reaches 170°C. In tensile loading, significant strength is retained, because of the residual strength of the glass reinforcement. The model was used to produce predictions for 'generic' composite laminates in fire. This paper examines the mid- to late-Holocene (c. 6850-1160 cal. yr BP) environmental history of Sierra de Gádor in southern Spain. The local vegetation dynamics are reconstructed through the palaeoecological record obtained from a lacustrine deposit situated at 1530 m. Various hypotheses are considered to explain the vegetation dynamics apparent in the palaeoecological evidence, including climatic change, fire occurrence and human activity. Although the vegetation in this region is sensitive to climatic change, threshold events driven by ecological factors are also apparent. Climatic events include a thermo-mesophytic optimum with abundance of deciduous trees and maximum lake water level found from c. 6850 to 5500 cal. yr BP. In contrast, changes in the frequency of major fire episodes appear to have shaped interspecific relationships and vegetation change, especially from c. 4200 cal. yr BP onwards. Biotic properties of the ecosystem such as the inertia of established tree populations, interconnected with competition adjustments, appear also to have played a role. Over the last two millennia, overgrazing, combined with natural and/or human-set fires, appears to have pushed mountain forests over a threshold leading to the spread of grassland, thorny scrub, junipers and nitrophilous communities. The modeling of fire and smoke spread is an evolving field. As knowledge is acquired and resources become available, models are enhanced to make their predictions more accurate and/or their computations faster. This paper will discuss the Consolidated Fire and Smoke Transport (CFAST) zone fire model, developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and a recent addition to that model, referred to as the Corridor Flow Submodel. The goal of this new submodel is to more accurately predict the flow of smoke down a corridor which has an impact on fire protection issues such as detection and escape time. Prior to the addition of this new submodel, CFAST assumed that smoke traveled instantly from one side of a compartment to another. Development of the submodel will be discussed and then the enhanced CFAST, Version 4.0.1 (executable dated 3/8/00), will be used to model a real-scale experiment conducted onboard the ex-USS SHADWELL, the Navy's R&D Damage Control platform. This paper begins to identify the relative roles of climate change, people and fire as factors in the late-Pleistocene and Holocene evolution of one of the most diverse terrestrial ecosystems in southern Australia. Our research illustrates that pollen from mediterranean-type heathlands can be recognized from sediments taken from small basins in semi-arid ecosystems. The use of pollen and carbonized particle analyses from sediment cores, in conjunction with ecological research on plant-fire relationships, establishes a role for palaeoecological techniques in the interpretation of long-term processes in semi-arid heathlands in Australia. Radiocarbon dates indicate that the treeless structure at our study site in the Little Desert of western Victoria has existed since at least the early Holocene. Pollen evidence indicates an increase in plant diversity, especially in Proteaceae and fire ephemerals, and a decrease in fire-sensitive taxa (e.g., Callitris spp., Allocasuarina muelleriana type) over the last 4000 years. Sedimentary charcoal is a widely used tool for reconstructing past fire histories. These fossil charcoals are normally quantified as the number or area of particles present in a sediment sample, but it is not known how well either measure is correlated with their volume. Areal measurements are often treated as the true measure of quantity, which may introduce bias to fire histories. The relationship of measured area to volume is a function of shape, and if this relationship can be understood, areal measurements may be adjusted to better reflect volume. We show that particle elongation may be particularly important when making such adjustments. We also establish a high degree of correlation between volume and area in a mid-Holocene mesocharcoal assemblage, which indicates that the bias may be small in similar cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Peat deposits from wetlands in the Upper Zambezi Valley provide an important long-term window on ecosystem dynamics in the Kalahari basin during the late Holocene. We use fossil pollen and macro-charcoal extracted from peat cores contained in three wetland sites to examine the response of vegetation to regional climate change. We find that during the last 6 ka, internal ecosystem dynamics are more important than climate, as observed by independent records, in determining vegetation assemblage change. Fire was found to be a persistent and important component of this savanna landscape for the duration of the ecological record, but biomass burning has increased markedly over the last 1000 years. The vegetation of the Upper Zambezi Valley appears to have a larger grassland component in the last few hundred years suggesting a more open landscape today than at any other time in the last 6000 years. We set out to test the ability to detect vegetation change from organic soil nutrient (carbon and nitrogen) composition in the fire-determined forest/non-forest mosaic of western Tasmania, Australia. We find no relationship between organic soil nitrogen and carbon content, despite widely varying local vegetation and fire regimes. Pollen evidence supports the role of fire in driving an initial vegetation state change from forest to non-forest, while carbon and nitrogen analysis of the peat section suggest that factors other than peat nutrient (carbon and nitrogen) content are responsible for the observed meta-stability of non-forest at the site for 7000 years. We find that we cannot validate the use of organic soil nitrogen and carbon content for inferring vegetation type and question the degree of post-European vegetation change inferred from this method. Several regions of the world have recently experienced climate-induced changes in forest composition, highlighting the need to understand the causes, likelihood, and dynamics of abrupt vegetation change. Although few historical examples of climate-induced forest change exist from recent centuries, particularly in humid regions like the northeastern United States, paleoecological records are rich with examples. For example, pollen records from portions of the northeastern United States indicate that eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) and American beech (Fagus grandifolia) abruptly declined in abundance between 500 and 600 yr BP. Concomitant increases in pine (Pinus spp.) and oak (Quercus spp.) occurred. Hypotheses to explain this change have included cooling during the ‘Little Ice Age’ (LIA), Native American activity, drought, and/or fires. To better understand spatiotemporal patterns of forest change and assess potential causes and dynamics, we synthesized regional pollen records and developed two high-resolution, coupled records of vegetation, fire, and drought from bogs in Maine. Results of our synthesis reveal >70% of regional pollen sites recorded shifts in forest composition during this time period. Bog records revealed that forest composition changed a few decades after the onset of drought and regional fires, consistent with increased recruitment of pine and oak during post-disturbance succession. Vegetation changes persisted until European settlement. Our data demonstrate that widespread, long-lasting forest changes were triggered by decadal-to-multidecadal drought and associated fires, highlighting the potential for abrupt, long-lasting forest changes in response to transient climate and disturbance events, particularly when such events occur against the backdrop of more gradual temperature change. Apparent changes in vegetation distribution, fire, and other disturbance regimes throughout western North America have prompted investigations of the relative importance of human activities and climate change as potential causal mechanisms. Assessing the effects of Euro-American settlement is difficult because climate changes occur on multi-decadal to centennial time scales and require longer time perspectives than historic observations can provide. Here, we report vegetation and environmental changes over the past ~13,000 years as recorded in a sediment record from Bison Lake, a subalpine lake on a high plateau in northwestern Colorado. Results are based on multiple independent proxies, which include pollen, charcoal, and elemental geochemistry, and are compared with previously reported interpretations of hydroclimatic changes from oxygen isotope ratios. The pollen data indicate a slowly changing vegetation sequence from sagebrush steppe during the late glacial to coniferous forest through the late Holocene. The most dramatic vegetation changes of the Holocene occurred during the ‘Medieval Climate Anomaly’ (MCA) and ‘Little Ice Age’ (LIA) with rapid replacement of conifer forest by grassland followed by an equally rapid return to conifer forest. Late Holocene vegetation responses are mirrored by changes in fire, lake biological productivity, and watershed erosion. These combined records indicate that subsequent disturbance related to Euro-American settlement, although perhaps significant, had acted upon a landscape that was already responding to MCA-LIA hydroclimatic change. Results document both rapid and long-term subalpine grassland ecosystem dynamics driven by agents of change that can be anticipated in the future and simulated by ecosystem models. In north-west Canada, Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine) has been migrating northwards and westwards for millennia. Its regeneration is currently enhanced by fire, which may act as a trigger for local population expansion. Using Holocene charcoal records from four small (<10 ha) lakes in southern Yukon, we investigated the relationship between long-term Pinus population dynamics and fire. Fossil stomata extracted from dated lake sediments indicate pine was present at low densities in southern Yukon forests by ~6000 cal. yr BP. At each site, the main population expansion (indicated by an increase in Pinus pollen from <5% to values as high as 60%) occurred 2000–>4000 years after the first local appearance of Pinus, suggesting a long period of stasis at low densities. Population increases – based on pollen accumulation rates (PARs) – occurred at different times at the four sites. Estimated expansion periods were ~2500–800 years, and population doubling times were ~150–600 years, similar to previous estimates. Estimated fire return intervals (FRIs) fluctuated over time. At all sites, the Pinus expansion began during a phase with a relatively short FRI, but only one difference between the mean FRIs before and during the Pinus rise was statistically distinguishable. Nor was the subsequent higher abundance of pine associated with shorter FRIs. It is unlikely that regional pine expansion is primarily linked to changes in climate or a climate-mediated fire regime, although expansion may have been triggered at individual sites during a period of high fire frequency. The long period of stasis at low population densities suggests intrinsic control of population growth; possibly Pinus expansion was initially constrained by lowered reproductive fitness (Allee effect) and/or interaction with local site-based factors. This work explores the transverse forced flow of precursor gases during hyperbaric pressure laser chemical vapor deposition (HP-LCVD). Axial and mass growth rates of carbon fibers are measured experimentally, and a numerical model is developed that provides fiber growth rates in both the mass-transport-limited (MTL) and kinetically limited (KL) regimes. It is found that the fiber’s transport-limited rate increases as the square root of the flow velocity, while simultaneously, the temperature drops with the inverse square root of the flow velocity. Growth is enhanced by forced flow so long as the reaction zone remains within the MTL regime; upon reaching a critical temperature and flow rate, however, fibers enter the KL regime, and the growth rate declines with rising flow rate. Molecular properties of the precursors employed and gas concentrations ultimately determine the range of the MTL and the locations of the critical temperature and flow rate. The growth rates of fibers can indeed be enhanced by transverse forced convection—to at least three times the zero-flow steady-state rate, provided an MTL regime exists. Complex three-dimensional structures may be grown from these fibers in a freeform manner, and the more rapidly such microstructures can be fabricated, the more practical HP-LCVD becomes for industrial use, including the fabrication of novel textiles. Continuous sediment, charcoal, and pollen records were developed from a ~7-m sediment core from Prater Canyon in Mesa Verde National Park (MEVE), Colorado, USA. Sediment input into the canyon is episodic and is linked to precipitation runoff and vegetation cover. Pollen recovered from the Prater Canyon sediment core reflect the vegetation changes within the MEVE region. During the period recorded, the vegetation of the region surrounding Prater Canyon transitioned from xeric adapted species in an open environment to a more mesic, Pinus edulis–Juniperus osteosperma (piñon–juniper) woodland over the last 1500 years. Two distinct changes in fire frequency occurred. Before 4080 cal. yr BP, fires occurred at a much more frequent rate (2.5–12 fires/200 years) than from 4060 cal. yr BP to present (0–2 fires/200 years). Most importantly, the variations occurring in the charcoal record for the past 2500 years coincide with both shifts in human occupation and climate fluctuations within the region, with burning increasing during Ancestral Puebloan occupation and moist but increasingly dry conditions, and declines in both at the end of the ‘Medieval Climate Anomaly’ (MCA). The record from Prater Canyon demonstrates the importance of the Ancestral Puebloans in landscape modification during their occupation from ad1 to 1300. We compared fire episodes over the past 150 years reconstructed using charcoal particles retrieved from well-dated sediment deposits from two small lakes in the eastern Canadian boreal forest, with dendrochronological reconstructions of fire events from the corresponding watersheds. Fire scars and age structure of living trees highlighted three fire events (ad 1890, 1941, and 1989). To explore the ability to detect these fire events based on sedimentary charcoal records, we explored the influence of two user-determined parameters of a widely used peak-detection algorithm (the CharAnalysis software): (1) the temporal resolution used to interpolate charcoal series and (2) the width of the smoothing window used to model background noise. The signal-to-noise index (SNI) is often used to evaluate the ability to detect peaks in sedimentary charcoal records, which can be related to fire events. SNI values >3 identify records appropriate for peak detection. Selecting standard settings in paleoecological studies (median temporal resolution of the entire sequence and 500- to 1000-year window width) yielded higher global SNI values but failed to detect most recent fire events. Instead, selecting a shorter reference period (the past ~150 years) to determine the temporal resolution to interpolate the charcoal series and a narrower smoothing window (100 years) best matched the tree-ring data despite lower SNI values (often <3.0). However, Holocene fire history differed markedly when reconstructed using different smoothing window widths (100–150 years vs >300 years). Consequently, we suggest using the smallest window width yielding a SNI >3. Practitioners must not necessarily focus on obtaining the highest possible SNI, usually related to wide smoothing windows. We also suggest that fire history reconstructions should focus on core sections presenting fairly constant sedimentation rates. Long-term environmental changes in some areas of Central Europe are still poorly documented due to the lack of archives suitable for well-established paleoecological approaches. However, paleorecords of such areas would provide important insights into the Holocene vegetation history of Central Europe. To contribute to fill this gap, we conducted soil charcoal analyses to investigate fire and forest history for the eastern Harz Mountains (Germany). Soil from 15 sequences at three investigation sites was analyzed, and charcoal assemblages were extracted. The taxonomic analysis shows Holocene woodland composition changes, from post-glacial pioneer woodland, dominated by pine, to broad-leaf closed forests, dominated by oak, and succeeded by beech. The temporal distribution of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS)-14C datings of single charcoal pieces indicates that fire events occurred regionally synchronous, mainly in the late-Pleistocene/early-Holocene and late-Holocene periods. The radiocarbon dating is supported by the description of the sampled soil sequences, which permits the identification of late-Pleistocene/early-Holocene in situ formed soil horizons, as well as evidences late-Holocene erosion-sedimentation processes. Climate seems to have triggered late-Pleistocene/early-Holocene fire events. In contrast, the increase of fires, at both local and regional scales, during the late Holocene in low flammable broad-leaf forests is interpreted as related to human activities. Finally, it is highlighted that the species spectrum of the extracted charcoal assemblages and the radiocarbon ages obtained fits regional and over-regional data, also concerning the soil charcoal concentrations that appear to be included in regional and global ranges of soil charcoal pools. We present a quantitative reconstruction of local forest history at two sites, Stavsåkra (hemiboreal zone) and Storasjö (southern boreal zone), in southern Sweden (province of Småland) to evaluate possible causes of contrasting Holocene fire histories in mid- and late Holocene. The Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) is applied to evaluate between-site differences in the relative abundance of deciduous trees and Pinus (pine) and landscape/woodland openness during the Holocene. The LRA estimates of local vegetation abundance are compared with other proxies of local vegetation, that is, plant and beetle remains. The LRA results suggest that Pinus was a major tree taxon in the woodlands of Storasjö during mid- and late Holocene, while Tilia (linden) and Betula (birch) were dominant at Stavsåkra. The contrasting fire histories are shown to be strongly related to between-site differences in tree composition during mid-Holocene, 4000–2000 bc in particular. The archaeological/historical and beetle data indicate contrasting land uses from c. 1000 bc (late Bronze Age/early Iron Age), grazing in open Calluna heaths at Stavsåkra and woodland grazing at Storasjö. Between-site differences in fire history during late Holocene were likely due to different land-use practices. Between-site differences in tree composition in mid-Holocene are best explained by local climatic and geological/geomorphological differences between the hemiboreal and southern boreal zones of Småland, which might also be the primary cause of between-site differences in land-use histories during late Holocene. Maintenance of biodiversity at the landscape scale in the study area requires that existing old pine woodlands and Calluna heath are managed with fire and cattle grazing. Climate, land use and fire are strong determinants of plant diversity, potentially resulting in local extinctions, including rare endemic and economically valuable species. While climate and land use are decisive for vegetation composition and thus the species pool, fire disturbance can lead to landscape fragmentation, affecting the provisioning of important ecosystem services such as timber and raw natural resources. We use multi-proxy palaeoecological data with high taxonomic and temporal resolution across an environmental gradient to assess the long-term impact of major climate shifts, land use and fire disturbance on past vegetation openness and plant diversity (evenness and richness). Evenness of taxa is inferred by calculating the probability of interspecific encounter (PIE) of pollen and spores and species richness by palynological richness (PRI). To account for evenness distortions of PRI, we developed a new palaeodiversity measure, which is evenness-detrended palynological richness (DE-PRI). Reconstructed species richness increases from north to south regardless of time, mirroring the biodiversity increase across the gradient from temperate deciduous to subtropical evergreen vegetation. Climatic changes after the end of the last ice age contributed to biodiversity dynamics, usually by promoting species richness and evenness in response to warming. The data reveal that the promotion of diverse open-land ecosystems increased when human disturbance became determinant, while forests became less diverse. Our results imply that the today’s biodiversity has been shaped by anthropogenic forcing over the millennia. Future management strategies aiming at a successful conservation of biodiversity should therefore consider the millennia-lasting role of anthropogenic fire and human activities. Lake sediments from Lauenensee (1381 m a.s.l.), a small lake in the Bernese Alps, were analysed to reconstruct the vegetation and fire history. The chronology is based on 11 calibrated radiocarbon dates on terrestrial plant macrofossils suggesting a basal age of 14,200 cal. BP. Pollen and macrofossil data imply that treeline never reached the lake catchment during the Bølling–Allerød interstadial. Treeline north of the Alps was depressed by c. 300 altitudinal meters, if compared with southern locations. We attribute this difference to colder temperatures and to unbuffered cold air excursions from the ice masses in northern Europe. Afforestation started after the Younger Dryas at 11,600 cal. BP. Early-Holocene tree-Betula and Pinus sylvestris forests were replaced by Abies alba forests around 7500 cal. BP. Continuous high-resolution pollen and macrofossil series allow quantitative assessments of vegetation dynamics at 5900–5200 cal. BP (first expansion of Picea abies, decline of Abies alba) and 4100–2900 cal. BP (first collapse of Abies alba). The first signs of human activity became noticeable during the late Neolithic c. 5700–5200 cal. BP. Cross-correlation analysis shows that the expansion of Alnus viridis and the replacement of Abies alba by Picea abies after c. 5500 cal. BP was most likely a consequence of human disturbance. Abies alba responded very sensitively to a combination of fire and grazing disturbance. An understanding of contemporary and likely future biodiversity requires knowledge of how past human societies have shaped diversity patterns. Here, we use long-term pollen data sets extending from lowlands to subalpine environment in the Carpathian region (Romania) with the aim of exploring the relationship between landscape openness, anthropogenic disturbance, elevation and vegetation richness over the Holocene. We found that landscape openness represents a significant driver of pollen richness: The more open sites from mid (440–750 m) and high elevations (1550–1850 m) showed on average greater diversity than more forested upland sites (1050–1360 m). For the first time, our results show pollen richness patterns along elevation gradients that remain constant over the Holocene. Although significant only over the last 3000 cal. yr BP, these elevational patterns become accentuated with stronger evidence of anthropogenic impact. We also found a strong link between diversity change and major land use strategies of prehistoric societies, demonstrating the potential of pollen richness to be used as a tool to depict the ecological impact of human disturbance on diversity. Most distinct episodes of enhanced floristic richness are evident during the Roman Period (2000 cal. yr BP), and over the last 500 cal. yr BP. Recent anthropogenic activity negatively impacted diversity in mountainous areas mainly through plantations; the lack of sites in agriculture landscapes however limits our inference for this type of setting. The maintenance of habitat diversity is key to maintaining high levels of diversity. While there is temporal consistency in the diversity pattern in records from similar climate and vegetation settings, comparison of diversity from different vegetation assemblages and levels landscapes openness should be interpreted cautiously. This study combined multiple aquatic and terrestrial proxies, including diatoms, pollen, grain size, and bulk-sediment chemistry to reconstruct the history of three lake sites located in the central Sand Hills of Nebraska, USA. Long-term changes in effective moisture are evident at all sites, with significant changes occurring at ~6000, ~4000, and ~ 2000 cal. yr BP. Both aquatic and terrestrial indicators suggest that effective moisture was low between 10,000 and ~6000 cal. yr BP, and that this time interval was the driest period of the Holocene. The dominance of benthic and tychoplanktic diatom taxa indicates relatively shallow lake-level, high sand influx indicates moderately high eolian activity, and the pollen assemblage suggests xeric grasslands with abundant mud flats. About 6000 cal. yr BP, all three sites experienced an increase in effective moisture. Lake-level rise is indicated by increases in planktic and tychoplanktic diatoms relative to benthic taxa, while greater abundance of grass pollen and charcoal, and decreased eolian flux indicate stabilized dunes with dense vegetation sufficient to fuel local fires. A significant hydrologic shift recorded at all sites occurred at ~4000 cal. yr BP. This event was characterized by substantial lake-level rise, yet decreased grass cover and fire frequency, and increased eolian activity. Water-table rise may have been caused by a combination of factors including: (1) formation of dune-dams that blocked old drainage channels, (2) reduced grass cover and hence reduced evapotranspiration, and (3) changes in the frequency and duration of drought. The most likely cause(s) of the differential response of the terrestrial and aquatic systems at this time is not clear, none-the-less the late Holocene was not nearly as dry as the interval prior to 6000 cal. yr BP. The last ~2000 yr were characterized by several short-term fluctuations in lake level, including an interval of drought between 950 and 750 cal. yr BP, coincident with increased eolian activity during the latter part of the Medieval Climatic Anomaly. Montane grasslands, or grassy balds, are enigmatic features of mountains worldwide. Their origins are often obscure. Pollen, phytolith and charcoal analysis of Dandabah Swamp in the Bunya Mountains in southeastern Queensland, Australia suggest that there, grassy balds comprise a relict vegetation maintained in the face of postglacial tree invasion by fire. The balds are not the product of edaphic phenomena or natural or anthropogenic cataclysms and will require intensive management efforts to be conserved in a world of increased woodiness, rising atmospheric CO2 and changing climate. Grassland and savanna are globally important ecosystems, both ecologically and economically. These grass-dominated systems are at risk from current and future climate change and increasing anthropogenic impact. Key questions for understanding the resilience and variability of grass-dominated ecosystems under current and future environmental conditions include: How have these systems responded to climate change and disturbance in the past? What are the principal driving agents responsible for their present-day composition and distribution? Do the palaeoecological data provide evidence for feedbacks between climate, fire and anthropogenic activities? In this study, the temporal dynamics of grassland, savanna and forest in the summer rainfall region of northern South Africa were reconstructed for the last ~6500 years. Palaeoecological techniques used include analyses of fossil pollen, charcoal and stable isotopes. Data from two sites located at the present-day grassland-savanna ecotone in Mpumalanga province of South Africa are reported. Results indicate that a mosaic of grassland, savanna and Podocarpus forest occupied the landscape throughout the late Holocene, with grassland and forest dominating higher altitudes, and savanna and forest lower altitudes. Podocarpus forest retreated and grass-dominated vegetation expanded its range around 1800 cal. yr BP at the lower altitude site (Lowveld) and 600 cal. yr BP at the higher altitude site (Highveld), representing a change from a stable state forest savanna/grassland mosaic to an increasingly grass-dominated system. Climatic stress, changes in fire regime and anthropogenic impact led to the vegetation transitions recorded, and resulted in changes in water and nutrient cycles. In an increasingly warm world, with fluctuating water availability and heightened anthropogenic use of natural resources, the future of grass-dominated ecosystems appears far from stable. An appropriate bioproxy is required to decipher Holocene tree biomass dynamics from the stand scale in relation to local processes such as disturbance or global climate change. Here we used plant litter collected in traps placed in subalpine forests, and data on the surrounding stands, to develop calibration equations for converting the observed macroremain accumulation rates to tree biomass (basal area) values. The needle accumulation rate (NAR) was modeled for Larix decidua and Pinus cembra. We then used the calibration equation developed from the trapped macroremains to reconstruct past tree biomass for sedimentary Holocene series from two subalpine lakes in the Alps. Our data show that NAR is significantly correlated with basal area. We found a clear overrepresentation of L. decidua NAR compared with its real basal area. This distortion potentially masks the occurrence of P. cembra, another important functional species of subalpine ecosystems, when macroremains are not calibrated. Without calibration, the use of NAR to describe past plant biomass always leads to an overestimation of L. decidua biomass and an underestimation of P. cembra biomass. Several shifts between the dominance of the two species, which were masked when using unadjusted NAR, were apparent and occurred at both sites. By comparing the reconstructed basal areas with fire frequencies, we found that P. cembra biomass accumulation preceded the increase of fire frequency and that fire frequencies superior to 0.0085 fire/yr could induce a long-term loss of resilience of cembra pine forest to the benefit of larch. This results to a slight dominance of Larix biomass from 2500 to 2000 cal. BP until the present day at the two sites. Our results provide increased understanding of tree biomass dynamics associated with specific vegetation phases, and shifts in dominant species, and highlight the needs to understand the causes of these shifts and identify how such processes are related to local environmental conditions. The initial establishment of Picea abies in Sweden and Norway on a landscape level, between 3000 and 1000 years ago, was often preceded by recurrent fire and thereafter the influence of fire decreased. However, in some swamp forests, the absence of fire over the last 3500 years has promoted the continuous presence of deciduous trees, i.e. Picea has not established although it has been present regionally for over 3000 years. Our objective was to study long-term vegetation development and fire history in a Picea swamp forest located close (c. 600 m) to a deciduous swamp forest with a documented fire-free history in northernmost Sweden. The study included analyses of charred particles, pollen and ignition residues. Principal component analysis was applied to identify major changes in the pollen spectra. Our results showed that the current Picea swamp forest has developed from a deciduous fen and that fires affected the fen between 6700 and 2300 cal. yr BP. Picea abies established on the fen around 2200 cal. yr BP, following the last local on-site fire. The main factors responsible for the local vegetation development have been: fire (6700 to 2300 cal. yr BP); autogenous processes and climate (2300 to 1000 cal. yr BP); autogenous processes or anthropogenic impact (1000 to 300 cal. yr BP); anthropogenic impact through selective cutting and grazing (300 to 100 cal. yr BP); and autogenous processes and grazing (100 cal. yr BP to present). We conclude that fire facilitated the initial Picea abies establishment. The determination of past successional stages, as well as the factors triggering succession, is crucial for the understanding of forest dynamics and the design of current and future management and conservation strategies. Shifts between successional stages can take decades or even centuries to occur because of tree longevity; therefore palaeoecological studies are important tools for their study. The present research involved the palaeoreconstruction of a transitional forest dominated by Pinus-Carpinus-Quercus in west-central Mexico over the last ~1230 years. The proxies employed include fossil pollen, microscopic fossil charcoal, magnetic susceptibility and organic matter content evaluated by multivariate techniques. The findings reveal that an initial cloud forest stage developed from 1230 to 1050 cal. yr BP. This stage was then interrupted for ~400 years (1050–690 cal. yr BP) when a regional climate change event decreased the number of cloud forest taxa and increased herbaceous taxa including Asteraceae, Poaceae, Plantago and Zea. The cloud forest stage recovered at 690 cal. yr BP and the community has persisted to the present time, yet this stage is dominated by human-induced taxa such as Pinus and Acacia. Whilst the dynamics of individual taxa were related to forest fires and soil erosion, changes between community types were related to an interval of regional climate change (greater aridity) that occurred between 1050 and 690 cal. yr BP. Results from this study indicate that, in order to preserve the cloud forest stage, human disturbances such as logging and agriculture should be excluded; a conservation strategy established in the transitional forest in recent years. The establishment of fire resistance of the fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bar-reinforced concrete (RC) is a prerequisite to the widespread applications of these bars. The use of FRP bars in residential and commercial buildings could result in their increased applications. This article presents an experimental study on the performance of carbon FRP (CFRP) and hybrid (steel—CFRP) RC beams at elevated temperatures. The beams were tested in a floor furnace and carried a load of 40% of ambient load capacity. Temperature rise in the compression concrete was found insignificant and its mechanical properties were nearly unaffected. All the tested beams failed in flexure which was also the intended failure mode at ambient temperature. The slip of CFRP bars was a major contributing factor to the beam failure. Influence of temperature rise was not found on the bar slip. A hybrid bar-reinforced beam showed better strength and stiffness characteristics in comparison with the steel- or FRP-reinforced beams. Neotropical biomass burning reconstructions synthesized from soil and sedimentary charcoal records indicate a period of reduced biomass burning sustained for several centuries after ~500 cal. yr BP. Proxy records of solar irradiance, El Niño events, temperature, and precipitation document regionally variable climate-related trends that do not account for the uniform reduction in burning across the Neotropics. Decreased human ignition resulting from pandemic-induced mortality offers an alternative, geographically comprehensive explanation. In addition, natural (solar-volcanic) factors can explain only ~1.3 ppm out of the rapid 6–10 ppm CO2 decrease between ad 1525 and the early 1600s. Reforestation following land abandonment due to population collapse has the potential to account for the rest of this CO2 decline, and variations in the 13C/12C of atmospheric CO2 and CH4 are consistent with both a major reduction in Neotropical landscape management by fire and massive reforestation. A mid- to late-Holocene synthesis of fire activity from the Mediterranean basin explores the linkages among fire, climate variability and seasonality through several climatic and ecological transitions. Regional fire histories were created from 36 radiocarbon-dated sedimentary charcoal records, available from the Global Charcoal Database. During the mid-Holocene ‘Thermal Maximum’ around 7500—4500 cal. BP, charcoal records from the northern Mediterranean suggest an increase in fire while records from the southern Mediterranean indicate a decrease associated with wetter-than-present summers. A North—South partition between 40° and 43°N latitude is apparent in the central and western Mediterranean. Relatively abrupt changes in fire activity are observed c. 5500—5000 cal. BP. Records of Holocene fire activity appear sensitive to both orbitally forced climate changes and shorter-lived excursions which may be related to North Atlantic cold events, possibly modulated by an NAO-like climate mechanism. In cases where human—fire interactions have been documented, the regional coherency between fire occurrence and climate forcing suggests a dominant fire—climate relationship during the early—mid Holocene. The human influence on regional fire activity became increasingly important after c. 4000—3000 cal. BP. Results also suggest that: (1) teleconnections between the Mediterranean area and other climatic regions, in particular the North Atlantic and the low latitudes monsoon areas, influenced past fire activity; (2) gradual forcing, such as changes in orbital parameters, may have triggered abrupt shifts in fire activity; (3) regional fire reconstructions contradict former notions of a gradual (mid- to late-Holocene) aridification of the entire region due to climate and/or human activities and the importance of shorter-term events; (4) Mediterranean fire activity appears hightly sensitive to climate dynamics and thus could be considerably impacted by future climate changes. The analysis of a 10 000 calendar year (cal. ka) pollen record on the west coast of Tasmania has revealed a suite of changes that can be related to sea level, fire and people. Fire-promoted moorland has occupied the site for the entire period and challenges the long-held assumption that rainforest dominated the landscape of western Tasmania through the early to mid Holocene. Changes in wetland taxa and the occurrence of benthic marine diatoms indicate a Holocene sea-level high-stand between 6.3 and 5.8 cal. ka. A significant and sustained rise in charcoal concentration occurs after 6 cal. ka, reflecting the combined effects of anthropogenic burning and hydrological changes that were probably modulated by regional climatic forcing. Macroscopic charcoal, pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs were isolated from a colluvial soil located on a small hill in Campo Lameiro (NW Spain) in order to elucidate the vegetation history of the area and its relation to fire and human activities. The presence of macroscopic charcoal throughout the 2.10 m thick soil (42 samples) is evidence of frequent fires during the last c. 6300 years. The charcoal record was dominated by Quercus (probably Q. robur), Ericaceae (probably Arbutus unedo and Erica arborea) and Fabaceae (mainly Genista type). Abrupt changes in the charcoal assemblage are less explicit in the pollen sequence, probably as a result of pollen inflow from the downhill surroundings of the study site. Combined results indicated that the original oak woodland was gradually replaced by pyrophytic shrubs (Ericaceae and Fabaceae) as a result of fire recurrence. Non-pollen palynomorphs strongly suggested that vegetation was deliberately ignited by past human societies to facilitate grazing. No evidence of local agricultural practices was found. Episodes of accelerated shrubland expansion occurred c. 6000-5500 cal. BP, c. 4000-3500 cal. BP and c. 1700 cal.
